Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 14

The moon takes on added symbolism today, offering a sliver of hope to cling to in the midst of unease, reminding us that there are things to look forward to, and faith to keep alive. It’s a hope that comes at a welcome time, because things are about to get a whole lotta serious up in this joint. Is everyone bracing themselves?

EPISODE 14: “Foggy road”

With the palace on high alert for an eighteen-year-old female spy named Hong Ra-on, all exits are monitored closely and young women pulled aside for closer inspection. Dressed in men’s clothing, Ra-on nervously approaches the inspecting guard for her turn.

Just then, Yoon-sung announces himself and declares that Ra-on is with him. His status shields them from further inquiry, and they are let through the line.

After receiving the huge shock that the supposed rebel spy is named Hong Ra-on, Yeong goes to Ra-on’s quarters, but only finds her eunuch’s uniform and eternity bracelet left behind.

The next morning, he’s stone-faced as he is dressed by Eunuch Jang, mentally replaying an earlier conversation with Byung-yeon, who had reported that no trace of Ra-on had been found. At Yeong’s question over whether he’d had any inkling before her disappearance, Byung-yeon had answered no.

At court, Yeong takes the younger Minister Kim (the minister of taxation) to task for several systemic abuses of the military taxation system. (Registering the names of babies or dead people, for instance, has forced peasants to pay unfair extra taxes.) He demands that every bit of unfairly collected tax be repaid to the people, but at that, Minister Jo cautions that it would put a strain on the nation’s economy. The elder Minister Kim adds that collecting fewer taxes will thrust the government into a dangerous situation.

Yeong notes sharply that everyone’s quite concerned for the state of the government. Given the pressing dangers, he declares the need for strict measures, and announces that he will cut the salaries of the ranking officials in the Six Ministries and the military administration.

This causes grumbling from the ministers, who ask the prince to reconsider. He snaps that the peasants have been forced to pay unfair taxes due to the corruption of the government. He asks in disgust, “How can you aristocrats, who call yourselves the roots of this nation, whine over this much? And you think you have a right to take a salary from the country?”

He gets no talkback this time.

Eunuch Jang staggers into the eunuch department, where Do Ki and Sung-yeol sympathize with his tiredness, noting that the prince has been quite icy lately. Eunuch Jung sighs that his hurt feelings are fine, but he worries over the prince’s health, given how he’s staying up all night working.

They wonder what happened to Eunuch Hong, but nobody has a clue. Eunuch Jang sighs that he misses Ra-on.

Young Master Jung informs Yeong that investigating the dead assassins has revealed no ties to the rebel group Baekwoonhwe. Yeong suggests that they are merely lying low until the situation quiets, and Young Master Jung concedes that as a possibility. However, he has found one peculiarity: Gold originating from Minister Kim ended up in the hands of one of the assassin’s brothers.

They’re interrupted by a visit from an investigator of the royal tribunal, who explains that a suspect has been caught: She’s not quite twenty years old, and has a possible link to Baekwoonhwe. Yeong tenses.

He heads to the prison immediately, making his way cautiously past the cells, pausing at the sight of a woman’s profile. Ra-on? He approaches with trepidation, breath caught in his throat.

But it’s an unfamiliar woman, and as Yeong sees her face clearly, he relaxes and breathes.

Ra-on is safe for the moment, tucked away in a hut watching her mother embroider an egret flower. She recalls Head Eunuch Han having a handkerchief with the same flower on it, belonging to his old friend, whom she now knows was her father. She also recalls the flower’s meaning: Even in my dreams, I long for you.

Mom takes her hand and asks if she’s having a tough time of it, and Ra-on does her best to smile and say no. She asks how her parents met, and Mom reminisces on growing up in the same village where she had other suitors who gave her flowers and accessories. Ra-on’s father was different; he gave her barley and corn, or sometimes mountain greens. Mom says she figured she wouldn’t starve, and was the one to propose that they marry.

Ra-on sighs that her father lacked romance. Mom just says that he had a field to farm and food to eat and shelter to sleep in: “That was all that your father wanted.”

Head Eunuch Han confirms with Byung-yeon that Ra-on disappeared before he was able to collect her. The eunuch finds the timing suspect, but Byung-yeon says she probably went into hiding in response to the heightened security. Eunuch Han catches on to the discrepancy, because Byung-yeon had previously said that she knew nothing of her connection to the rebellion or Baekwoonhwe. Ack!

Byung-yeon covers up the slip by saying that Ra-on didn’t know it then. The eunuch reminds him that even if Ra-on discovered the truth about herself, the safest place for her would be with the rebels in Baekwoonhwe.

Yeong calls for Yoon-sung, who starts by asking how Yeong is doing. Yeong asks, “Are you worrying about me? The woman you love enough to declare war [against me] has disappeared. Why are you not curious about it?” He points out that Yoon-sung could ask whether Ra-on left any messages, or said where she was going.

Yoon-sung replies that even if he knew anything, they aren’t in a position to share information. Thus he is merely refraining from asking, he says.

Yeong looks a little bitter as he says, “Not me. Even if it is useless, I want to ask. If you know anything, whatever it is.”

Yoon-sung apologizes for being unable to help him. Yeong understands that to mean that Yoon-sung wouldn’t tell him whether he knew anything or not, and Yooon-sung confirms it.

Yeong leaves wearing a dark expression, and walks right past Ha-yeon, who bows in greeting. He only stops when she calls out to him, and she says wistfully that she’s envious—it would be nice if she could walk past him and not notice, and even better if she could see him and pretend she didn’t.

She notes his downcast expression, and he points out the same for her, wondering why she’d look sad when she’d said they were only making a deal. Ha-yeon hastens to explain that even so, it’s a deal that may last her whole life, so there’s no harm in trying to be friendly.

“So what I mean to say,” she tells him, “is to not walk so weakly. And do not look as though you have lost everything in the world. The person you love will likely have said this, if she saw your face now.”

That night, Yeong looks up at the full moon, while from her hideout, Ra-on stares up at the same thing. She thinks back to a time when she’d sat with Yeong at the palace, looking up at the night sky together.

Ra-on comments, “Ah, so that’s what the moon looks like from the palace.” He scoffs that the moon is the same, not seeing any difference.

Ra-on explains that when she was young and traveling with her performance troupe, she’d thought that the moon looked different in every region—full in one area, crescent-shaped in another. He asks if she’d moved that often, and she says yes.

Laughing at her childhood foible, she asks if Yeong has ever entertained totally wrong ideas, to which he says no and clucks his tongue over how she could have thought something so dumb. Ra-on makes a face at him, and he pulls her toward him and assures her it was a joke.

Yeong explains that this is the first time he’s sharing this: “I was even more foolish than you. When I was a child, I thought this palace was the whole world. The highest, most valuable, narrowest well in Joseon—that is the palace I grew up in.”

Ra-on teases that she’s better off, because the water she played in may have been lowly and unimportant, but it was big.

Yeong takes her hand and asks, “Ra-on-ah. Whether we’re seeing it from the palace or from Banchon, is not the moon just the moon? I’m the prince, and whoever you are—wherever and whenever, if only our hearts are the same, that is enough. Like that moon.”

He pats his shoulder, and Ra-on rests her head on it.

Now in the present, the memory brings tears to Ra-on’s eyes.

The queen goes into labor, and aw yeah, it is time to get down to business. The king paces anxiously, noting that it’s a month premature. The royal doctors and nurses are not alerted right away, and by the time they arrive to attend to the queen, they’re turned away by her court ladies, who inform them that the queen has already given birth and does not need their care.

The child is born, and as feared, it’s a girl. The queen refuses to look at her baby’s face and orders her taken away, while the hidden court lady’s baby boy is swapped in her place. For what it’s worth, the queen does look torn up about it—just not, you know, torn up enough to not do the evil thing.

The Kims crow to themselves about the birth of a prince, and Dumb and Dumber get ahead of themselves envisioning installing the baby as the new crown prince. Prime Minister Kim warns them to watch their mouths since they’re essentially threatening the current crown prince with that talk. But Minister Dumb is happy to have a reason to rejoice; he’d been worried about Minister Jo’s daughter being married to the crown prince and bolstering the opposition’s position. Now, all they need is to take care of Yeong and their power is secure again.

Prime Minister Kim cautions them not to be hasty, but they look pretty smug.

The baby princess is given to Eunuch Sung, who smuggles her outside in a wheelbarrow and hands her off to another underling. When the baby starts to cry, they frantically try to muffle the noise, and the other man hurries away with her.

Annnnd around the corner, Yoon-sung watches the whole exchange. Muahaha.

Now it’s Princess Myeongeun’s turn to go skulking around the palace looking for her sweetheart, and she times her walk to bring her into Young Master Jung’s path. She keeps up an air of hauteur to his face, but smiles giddily to herself when he calls out to her. She invites him to accompany her on her walk, and he happily follows.

Sitting in a pavilion together, Myeongeun says that she liked Young Master Jung’s rudeness, which she found refreshing, and suggests that they speak familiarly when alone. “Deok-ho-ya,” she tries out.

But he says he can’t do the same, which makes her smile fade. Then he stretches out an arm around her shoulders like the most comfortable player in the world and says, “Because I don’t know your name.” She tells him her name, and he pulls her close as he tests it out.

Myeongeun closes her eyes, and Young Master Jung puckers up and goes in for the kiss… only to have the princess slap him at the last second. She exclaims nervously that it’s too fast, and he stammers an apology.

The king informs Yeong of the new prince’s birth, and understands that in his position, the news cannot be wholly welcome. Yeong replies that the prince is his brother and assures his father not to worry.

When Minister Kim drops by the queen’s palace, he comments to Eunuch Sung about how Yeong must be feeling upset in light of the birth. Eunuch Sung adds that he must feel especially sad because his close eunuch recently disappeared.

That’s news to the minister, and Eunuch Sung fills him in on how Eunuch Hong disappeared the day the palace was searched for the spy. The eunuch shakes his head over Ra-on’s troublemaking ways, and how (s)he even had woman’s clothing found in his (her) things; it almost caused trouble with the queen until the prince intervened.

Minister Kim files this away, finding it all very interesting. So when he crosses paths with Yeong later, he makes it a point to express his sympathy for Yeong’s troubles, and how it must feel to lose a valued eunuch.

But he won’t get the better of Yeong today, who comments on an interesting fact he’s discovered, too: that in the course of investigating the recently captured assassin, he found that Minister Kim’s own gold had made its way to the assassin’s family.

Minister Kim gets a little nervous, and Yeong demands to know what reason he would have to pay such a large sum to an assassin who attacked the crown prince.

Dumb and Dumber sweat as they discuss this complication, only now aware of the numbers engraved on each piece of gold that point to them. Now they need to come up with an explanation for the money exchange in a way that doesn’t implicate them for treason.

Nervously, Minister Dumb pre-emptively apologizes to the prime minister when he enters, but the prime minister cuts him off with the simple warning not to start anything if he’s going to end up sorry about it. If only they ever listened.

Yoon-sung drops by Ra-on’s hideaway, and the two sit underneath the stars looking up at the full moon. Yoon-sung pulls out a pair of binoculars and offers it to her, to see the moon up close.

Ra-on takes the binoculars and looks up at the moon, which reminds her of Yeong’s words about the moon being the same wherever you look at it—and that regardless of who they are, all they need to have is a constant heart.

The memory makes her emotional, and Yoon-sung moves away the binoculars to see her tearful expression. She recovers her composure, and Yoon-sung says that she must miss somebody far away. Ra-on says no, that she was just staring because it was so strange to see the moon appear so large.

That night, a mysterious man wearing a black bamboo hat is let in to see the prime minister. Hmm.

Trust that it takes the prime minister to put the pieces together and deduce that the runaway Eunuch Hong is the very same lost daughter they’ve been searching for. Minister Dumb now remembers Yeong’s ashen face when he’d heard the spy’s name, though he supposes that Ra-on is long gone and out of reach by now. The prime minister, on the other hand, merely says that if she’s run away, they’ll have to catch her.

Yeong warns the prime minister that Minister Dumb will have to answer for his gold. In response, the prime minister says that the gold was reward for information—that the hidden spy, Hong Ra-on, was involved in the attack on the prince.

Caught by surprise, Yeong asks what proof he has, and the prime minister replies that the girl is proof enough. “Do not worry,” the prime minister says. “Even if I have to cut off that girl’s arms and legs, I will bring her before you.”

At Yeong’s silence, he asks, “Can it be that you already knew?”

Yeong works late into the night, mind preoccupied with doubts and worries. He thinks of the assassin’s claims that a spy inside the palace helped them, and pictures Ra-on being part of the plot all along. He shakes off the thought, telling himself it’s impossible, but lacks conviction.

The bride selection is held, and Ha-yeon is among the finalists brought before the king and queen for interviews. Asked what kind of princess she would be, Ha-yeon replies, “I will love, and love, and love some more.” She explains that her heart of love will enable patience and sacrifice as well, and hilariously, the queen nearly rolls her eyes at the earnest answer.

But the king approves, and before we know it, Ha-yeon is brought to the palace to be trained for her position leading up to the wedding.

Ra-on’s mother collects clothing to wash and assures Ra-on that it’s good to earn money while there’s work to be had. Then she hesitantly broaches the topic of the princess selection, gently letting Ra-on know that the bride has been chosen and the wedding is on the horizon.

Ra-on struggles to contain her reaction, then hurries off with an excuse while holding back tears.

Yeong reads in his private garden, and looks up at someone’s approach. He imagines it’s Ra-on there, looking as she did that first time she came to him in woman’s clothing, and jumps to his feet anxiously… and then deflates to realize it’s Ha-yeon.

Ha-yeon tells him of her selection, which he’s already been informed of, and promises to do her best to help him. His face stony, he tells her, “It’s only a deal. There is no need for that.”

She’s disappointed by the response but says that him taking the throne will be good for her family. Yeong says that he will do his best in his duty and in upholding the deal, but asks for a promise: “Do not enter this place again.”

He leaves abruptly, and Ha-yeon is crushed.

Yoon-sung finds Ra-on looking heartbroken, but she turns him away, saying that it’s too painful for her to see him, because it makes her want to ask after Yeong: “I must forget, I must not know, but I keep wanting to know. Whether he’s eating, whether he sleeps well, whether he’s healthy. You are so good to me that I hate myself for wanting to ask you these things. So please do not come.”

Yoon-sung tells her that it’s okay, that he thinks mean things to himself, and holds onto the thought that when all this is over, she might come to him. He encourages her to cry, telling her he won’t expect anything of her or mistake the situation.

At that, Ra-on breaks down into the sobs she’s been repressing all this while. She chokes out, “I meant not to cry… my heart hurts so much.” Yoon-sung reaches out a hand to console her, but ends up keeping it to himself.

As Yeong sits at his desk, he takes out Ra-on’s eternity bracelet, thinking back to the promise he asked of her—to not let go of him, even in the toughest of times. He also remembers her last day, when she’d kissed him in his sleep.

He sets down her bracelet and starts to remove his own, but he breaks down in tears before he can manage it.

Ra-on receives a visit from a messenger carrying a letter from Head Eunuch Han, which she takes with some trepidation. It says that he hadn’t told her everything about her father, and requests a meeting.

That night, Ra-on waits in an appointed spot. But when she turns at the sound of an arrival, her face freezes. Uh-oh. It’s not who she’s expecting.

At the same time, the prime minister explains to Minister Dumb that although he knows where Ra-on is, his goal isn’t to merely capture her, but to use her in a bigger game. Namely, to bring down the crown prince: “If it becomes known that the prince secretly communicated with the traitor’s daughter outside of the palace, what do you suppose will happen?”

We return to Ra-on—and it’s Yeong standing there before her, looking thunderous. Yesss. Or no? Yessss.

What they don’t know is that a small army has made its way to their meeting point, presumably directed by the prime minister. Oh no. This looks bad. This looks very, very bad.

The soldiers gather outside their building, and start to charge in…

Inside, Yeong regards Ra-on with the coldest eyes and vows firmly, “I will never forgive you.” Stricken, Ra-on can only stare as he advances toward her, his face grim with determination…

But he just swoops in and envelops her in an embrace.

Ra-on’s eyes overflow with tears as Yeong holds her close, his hand still wearing his bracelet, and his face softens a bit.

Ra-on reaches her hand up tentatively, and grabs a handful of his clothing tightly. He registers that touch, and holds her even more tightly.

COMMENTS

Yay, he didn’t give up faith, but also, oh my god runnnnnnn! It’s a trap! This is all about to come down on your heads in a very bad way!

Because, barring a last-minute miracle (which I won’t give up on; it’s unlikely, but still something to console me through the week), it looks like these two have fallen prey to the prime minister’s machinations. Just as Ra-on’s flight cast her in a guilty light (in addition to the false testimony that nobody is in a position to contradict), being caught together here not only bodes ill for Ra-on, it casts doubt onto the prince, too. If he’s consorting with the enemy, then he needs to come up with a really convincing explanation in order to escape being painted as in cahoots with traitors. Of course it’s absurd for him to have planned his own assassination attempt, but I suppose nothing’s out of the realm of possibility if you ascribe a persuasive logic to it, however false. As we’ve seen in many a sageuk, all that’s needed is a clever twisting of the facts to fashion a narrative that’s far from true but highly credible: It’s never the truth itself that matters, but the appearance of it, and whoever is better at crafting that illusion ends up the winner.

I’m encouraged by past displays of Yeong’s quick wit and ability to outsmart his foes, but on this score I worry that he’s at a clear disadvantage. Even if they were able to clear Ra-on of being a spy for Baekwoonhwe, she’s still got multiple black marks against her that leave her in danger: She’s the daughter of a traitor, and as such would either face death or possibly slavehood; she impersonated a man and used a false identity; and she dishonored the eunuch status by infiltrating it fraudulently. Knowing how dire the situation is for Ra-on was part of why I found yesterday’s goodbye moving and necessary, because I was hard-pressed to come up with reasons for her to stay, despite hating that she had to leave.

And so, yesterday’s sadness felt poignant but still sweet, like a soft pang in the heart, while today felt like a sharper, colder type of pain. Yeong’s heartbreak signifies more than just a love that could not be; it came hand in hand with a breach of trust and a fear that the world may never be right again. *tears* I didn’t necessarily want him to be blind to doubt—his overwhelming love for Ra-on hasn’t always made him act in the smartest of ways—but it hurt to see him totally disillusioned, wrestling with the fear that Ra-on could have betrayed him. My heart dropped when he started to take off his bracelet and then broke down at the gesture.

It was a huge relief to see that he hadn’t, ultimately, given up his faith in Ra-on, as the show made it a point to show us the bracelet he was still wearing; he’s entitled to feel angry, but he can be hurt and love her at the same time. It’s why, despite feeling bad for Ha-yeon, I actually found it really satisfying when he kicked her out of his private garden, because it felt like he was fighting to protect that love. And speaking of Ha-yeon, it was a bit unexpected to have the selection come and go so quickly, but it wasn’t unwelcome; we already knew she would be the one, so no need to linger on foregone conclusions. Glossing it over also kept us emotionally in line with Yeong; he was dealing with his broken heart all episode, and I could feel how disengaged he was from the selection, which made it fitting to move past it swiftly.

I just really hope that our couple gets a chance to talk out some of their questions now, even if just for a moment, before the soldiers come charging in to accuse them of treasonous activities. I suppose they could also talk it out in long conversations in prison, but I’d much rather that a clever twist, or a helpful hand by one BFF or the other, will save the day and keep them safe for just a while longer.

The ending scene also reminded me how grateful I am to this show for never dragging things out for too long, because it felt like this was about as much angst and separation as I could handle before it would have dulled my enjoyment of the show. I can handle a drama that deepens its emotional line and heightens the melodrama, but I don’t want it to come at the expense of gratifying relationships and plot that I actually want to see unfold. That’s the thing a lot of dramas miss in their last third or quarter; the story may necessitate angst, but I’ve sat through so many dramas where that angst resulted in episodes that were just no fun to watch. If nothing else, I’m glad we could end on a note that was uplifting amidst the dread, to keep my hope alive for the rest of the week.

I did love the use of the moon as a motif to tie together our couple; it sort of took over where the bracelets left off and continued the same message: that the moon remains constant despite location and time and even its variations on shape, and as long as Ra-on and Yeong feel the same way, their love will remain constant. I like its symbolism better than the bracelets, which always had that contingency of being worn—at least, the initial superstition did, stating that the two people who wore them would be destined to meet again, which is why Ra-on’s return of the bracelet felt like such a blow. The moon, on the other hand? It just is.

Wow. T_T

Until that last scene, I was legitimately wondering how anyone in this show could possibly end up happy. (Besides Princess Myung-eun, that is. I'm actually really thankful that she thus far remains blissfully oblivious to the heartbreak all around her. She's just so sweet and innocent.) But as soon as Yeong hugged Ra-on and she hugged him back, it was just this flood of hope - like anything's possible.

But, yes, OMG run!!

Gosh show why are you trying to scare me? Haven't you put my heart through enough?

I knew the Prime Minister would try to set Yeong up. Which is why when persons complained last episode about Raon not telling Yeong who she was I disagreed. I am hoping against all hope that they escape though.

But this week was so heartbreaking though! I felt for the characters Yeong, Raon, HaYeon and even Yoonsung. But what really got me in the heart was Yeong's anger. It felt so real.

Yeong is feeling so hurt but he is not in a position where he can be sad without explaining. He has no one to talk about his feeling about Raon leavingand finding out her identity. So when he finally breaks down by himself it's just sadder.

Please hurry and get back together and try not to break HaYeon and Yoonsung's heart too much in the process.

Although it'd be great if Ra-on had chosen to confide in Yeong and told him the truth, I understand why she'd chosen to run away instead, it's consistent with her character. And like I commented in previous episode recap, this wouldn't be an easy topic to broach, even if they understand each other so well and have faith in each other, treason especially on her family's part isn't a light subject for her, I can imagine no words can come out of her mouth at all. I'm glad Yeong look past all of those, and simply look at Ra-on as the woman he loves.

So basically, for Yeong, to never forgive = hugs. And punishment= kisses. He had to go and make himself more wonderful, didn't he? Seeing them hug at the end isn't bringing me enough happiness to heal from all the pain this episode put me through though so I'm going to watch the blissful beginning over again, back when our puppies could have fun with each other without a care in the world. It really feels like they've been forced to grow up so fast since those days.

"So basically, for Yeong, to never forgive = hugs. And punishment= kisses."

LOL, tell me about it. If that is his idea of not forgiving and punishing, and if I were RO, I wouldn't mind being a masochist.

I also miss the early episodes when the CP, RO and Kim Hyung were so cute together and careless.

every time I see Yoon Sung and his little sigh after killing the letter messenger,
I can imagine another Saeguk drama with antihero male lead like Yoon Sung , when a good guy from outside released his deadly desire and make a path for the new kings, even if it mean he has to release his beastly desire that cost a lot of life and let go of his love

Oh yes! That would be really interesting! I totally would watch that kind of drama.
I'm not scared OF him though, just scared FOR him. I mean if the messenger guy discovered Ra-On's place because he followed YS, he could be in danger too. Plus, he knew about the baby-swap.

True, Grandfather Kim won't hesitate to off YS since he believes the Queen has given birth to a prince. There's a potential Crown Prince Kim in the palace now, torch-bearer for the clan. Isn't the Queen the PM's daughter?

I think the correct translation is " the daughter of a Gisaeng"
so he said that he is so powerful that can make the daughter of a Gisaeng become the queen,

she is probably his child outside the official wedding and that make the queen is not noble born/low class so she is expendable if she already finished her purposes, to have a prince out of official wedding

0

He does. If that messenger did follow YS then his life is really in danger. As long as the show does not kill anyone except the bad guys then I'm good.

And while they're at it, Eunuch Sung's face too. Talks too much and has a never-ending ax to grind with Ra On.

There was a tinge of sadness when she looked at her not real baby. At least that is how I read her face. I think she's grieving but she has a bigger plan and she is determined to achieve her goal and that is more powerful than her motherly emotions.

Nothing sad about her. She is just trying to keep her own ass besides the king as long as she can. Throwing away her own daughter so she could mother someone else's son is an act of selfishness and pure greed. She has the choice to stand by CP Yeong but no, she decides to have her 'own son' so she could get rid of him. A daughter is useless to her.

I guess you can say she is sad precisely because she has to do something so painful as throwing away her own child to secure her safety in the palace. That her father treats her more like a tool to further his position of power, rather than a daughter. That she is so insecure in her position that she would deceive her father and her husband and resort to living a lie.

To have your fate decided by something as uncontrollable as the gender of your unborn child is a terrible thing.

No excuses for her behaviour of course, but to be put in such a position where she has to make such a choice is what I feel is sad.

It's slow but it's not draggy. I've always viewed this as character-driven so even if there's barely anything happening plot-wise, the character interactions make up for it.

Yeah, I find that I've been fully invested in these characters and YeongOn especially very early on in the show. So as long as each episode won't have me feeling like I/the characters ended up in the same place I was/they were at the beginning of the episode or even coming from previous ones, then I know the episode accomplished something for me and the characters.
YeongOn's come a long long way from the beginning of the show, and each episode always makes me feel like it's important for me to see how the big changes/obstacles impact them and not simply tell me that it does in like one reaction frame before moving on to other things. I like that in this show it's all a process, and the characters get to breathe, change bit by bit and grow.

I personally love this kind of approach. It goes so well with how the show is shot, scored and directed.

Me too. It is slow but not draggy. No big action or event happening, but there are tons of small moments all around for each character. And I personally enjoy the developments in the characters themselves.

It probably feels that way because we focus more on the OTP separation today. But actually plot wise, things are moving along fairly quick. Kim clan found out about Ra-on, the crown princess has been chosen and now awaits marriage ceremony, and the Kim clan is on their way catching Yeong in compromising situation--being intimate with traitor's daughter.

Required fields are marked *

I think it always this slow, watching it from week 1 and it doesn't have fast pace for the main conflict,
the side story actually solved faster,
they like to dive in the moment,

what happen in this episode is them facing reality,
them gathering information and acted out of the information they got,
this drama pace is not that fast and their story coverage also not as deep as the political fight,
that's why the genre is youth - saeguk,
kinda hope this is the bloody saeguk cause I think they can but then Yoo Jung is too young for became the female lead imo

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

The pace actually picked up after a contemplative four episodes, with a lot of things happening to all major characters. The show has never been draggy, but it did zoom in to focus on developing our OTP's relationship for a while so the politics fell a bit behind.

But I feel that the challenges for our OTP have kept on coming since the last couple of episodes. So yeah, it's pretty fast-paced now.

I really like the person doing the episode editing, especially how they manage to end each week on a somewhat hopeful note, that helps to alleviate the heartache somewhat.

It feels like no matter what Ra On and Prince Yeong go through, they still end each episode together. And I like how a simple hug from Prince Yeong conveys so much- he has lived up to his word that no matter what the painful truth was going to be, he would stand strong in his love for Ra On.

Ra On doesn't understand the full significance of the hug though because she doesn't know he knows who her father is. Strangely it makes the hug even more special to me. He may have had doubtful thoughts, but his actions speak of what he believes in his heart- he trusts and loves her, and accepts her for who she is.

Now all they need to do is outsmart the Kims. Which given Dumb and Dumber, shouldn't be too difficult right? (I am also hoping like the earlier commenters have said that the last scene is meant to mislead the viewers *fingers crossed*)

And so many loose ends for the Kims-
Mute princess, the New Prince That Actually Isn't, failed assassination attempt by D&D, all the corruption that Prince Yeong keeps unearthing. Surely one of these is going to come back and bite them, right?? I'm hoping for at least 1 full episode of puppies and rainbows and lots of cheeky adorable gif worthy moments, so hopefully the Kims get sorted sooner rather than later.

Still out sightseeing so no gifs yet, hopefully in a couple of hours when I get back. Will update when I have them done.
Any requests since I haven't started doing them yet? ?

"Now all they need to do is outsmart the Kims. Which given Dumb and Dumber, shouldn’t be too difficult right?"

Only problem is the brain, Minister Kim, is the mastermind behind it now. That ought to be hard to overcome.

With 4 episodes ahead of us, I hope they explore well on the loose ends that needs to be tied up, because it's a shame that there are so much things that can crush our enemy, yet our good guys have no knowledge of them and are powerless to stop the impending doom. I wish Princess Yeong-eun speaks up already.

I always enjoy your recaps. They not only capture the detail of the show but add insights to the characters. This is the very first K-drama I have ever watched and I'm glad I picked the right one. MDBC has the right formula that got hooked from the get go. I actually think Park Bo Gum is too pretty and cutesy at times and prefer seeing him in his more austere persona (specially the fight scenes or when he's being cold) but that's just me. The casting is genius and Kim Yoo Jung destroyed me in episode 13. What a great young actress. However this tale ends, I can't regret ever getting into it. I've watched each episode at least three times. One to enjoy the story reading the subtitles, the second to enjoy the drama, and the third because it's just that good! And since discovering the recaps here on Dramabeans, I've just been as anxious waiting for the recap of the show as I am about the show itself, well nearly as anxious :) Great job, javabeans!

Thank you so much for this recap, JB!

I have a feeling that it was Yoon-sung who helped his friend and Ra-on to meet up. I do think that he loves Ra-on so much that he couldn't bare to see Ra-on miserably longing for Yeong. I do think that he did it mostly for Ra-on and maybe a tiny wee bit for his rival/ friend. I never once thought that Yoon-sung would be working with his grandfather as we saw time and again. We know that he'd defy his haraboji and would actually kill for Ra-on. Although I honestly thought he may have betrayed Yeong and Ra-on for a second there but that's really impossible and ridiculous as it's not in line with his character at all. But why would Yoon-sung's grandfather be sure that he knows Ra-on's whereabouts? Was Yoon-sung tailed by his henchmen? But I know Yoon-sung is cautious and would immediately know if he's being tailed. He is also very smart such as you know, putting two and two together like about that birth, "Annnnd around the corner, Yoon-sung watches the whole exchange. Muahaha." Muahahahaha! I second the motion! Lol! So I fervently believe that Yoon-sung has outsmarted his elders again. I believe (and so hoping) that he led the guards to the wrong house/ meeting place.

Thanks for explaining that moon thing. I mean I'm not that profound to look any deeper into it really but I had a fresh look into it after reading this recap.

I'm glad that Yeong still held onto that bracelet. I did like the scene when he was about to take it off but just couldn't then broke down into sad tears. I feel so sorry for him. Park Bo-gum's acting did me in. Although it was too sad that he thought that Ra-on may have betrayed him but I think he realised soon after that there really is zero chance for that as Ra-on was always with him and well, the feelings they've shared were genuine.

Regarding Byeong-yeon, I do worry for his safety. Suspicions are attacking him from all angles really. It's like he's actually on his own. He doesn't have full loyalty on the rebel group and on the crown prince either as he never divulged any information to him, well, except for the books. I reckon that act actually gave me relief that his loyalty is more on the Crown Prince's side, but can loyalty be rated? It's all or none, right? But I do believe that not telling the prince everything is also a form of protecting him. He only has good intentions yet he has been so conflicted so many times, poor thing.

Yes, I do hope that Yeong and Ra-on can talk and clear everything in the air. But with the wedding coming on, well, that's inevitable isn't it? I don't hate Ha-yeon but I don't like her marrying the prince. What can they do? It's another week of waiting, sigh...

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was dreading the royal marriage at first, but I guess I've come to term that it's something that must be done, because Ha-yeon's character has been identified as the crown princess from onset. Maybe that's why I wasn't feeling the chemistry between Ha-yeon and Yoon-sung, because I knew in my heart she has to be the crown princess. It's sad that Ra-on may not be Yeong's wife/queen, but it's not something uncommon at that time and era for the monarch to have many wives, Ra-on could be Yeong's concubine, though that seems rather impossible right now.

I believe it was Yoon-sung who helped them reunite too. After Ra-on's cryfest by the river, maybe Yoon-sung just couldn't watch her be hurt anymore? Plus, he really loves Yeong as a friend too. Anyone who sees those two (YeongOn) know they've both lost their world the moment they were separated.

I read my posted comment and well, discovered a blunder. I said that I never once thought that Yoon-sung would be working with his grandfather but contradicted myself when I actually thought about it for a second. I was just in denial, is all, wahahaha! Gawd. I still believe in bromances, I suppose.

And Ra-on, shocked and guilty but also full of love. KYJ did a stellar job showing us how overwhelmed Ra-on was at that moment, being embraced by the man she loved, the man she never thought she would ever see again, despite what she'd done to him.

I love how subtle her response was, and how that small gesture of clutching his clothes convinced him that their love was real. I can't with this two!

Sharing this interview with director Kim Sung Yoon. I'll outline some of the interesting things mentioned in the interview:

http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2016/10/05/0200000000AEN20161005005500315.html

1. PBG struggled with his portrayal at first and they even re-filmed the first two episodes when finally he got the groove of his character (I did not know that. Wow! Indeed an advantage of live-shooting).

2. No one else was cast as Yeong. "Only with Park Bo-gum could we get the investment and TV slot. But I was worried."

3. Apparently there is now a new genre of drama. Park Bogum genre LMAO

4. Because of KYJ's age they could not follow the material which had quite a number of hot scenes, but they still went for KYJ and she totally went above and beyond their expectation.

5. Director kept his expectation low (just like everyone else really) and did not dream of the ratings they are now getting.

Congratulations to the cast and crew.

Interesting.

1. I didn't even know they re-filmed the first two episodes, but to be honest, I wasn't quite impressed with them as well, I guess he finally got the hang of it and made one hell of Yeong.

2. Aww, this totally remind the case with Kill Me, Heal Me. No wanted the role especially after Hyun Bin rejected it, but Ji Sung turned it into a hit drama with excellent performance. Park Bo-gum is made for Moonlight.

3. Park Bo-gum genre. Enuff said.

4. That...is still something I feel regrettable at times, not that I'd want to switch out Yoo-jung for anyone because she was became Ra-on for me too, I guess it's just the age thing.

5. That's pretty much an understatement. I'm sure everyone was expecting the other drama to crush this, I was too. I'm just happy that their hard works paid off and they're receiving so much well-deserved love.

I'm glad that they had no one else in mind for the role of Yeong except for PBG. I'm pretty sure they were banking on his success and the success of Reply 1988 that is why the higher ups probably insisted on him. I get why the director was worried because it is really PBG's first role as a lead because Reply 1988 was basically an ensemble cast. With this one, he and KYJ had to carry the drama. I'm not saying the other characters are not important, but this drama is really about them both. It is the story of YeongOn so they really needed to do well and they absolutely did.

As much as I liked the other actresses whose names were linked to Moonlight, I think they'd look older and more mature than the role of Raon and would have looked older than PBG too. KYJ is really a perfect fit.

regarding number 2 and 5, there's the talk about the Reply's curse since the most popular Ryu Jun Yeol is not become the phenomenon in his latest drana (he did good and drama did good too jut not big).
and that's the Ryu Jun Yeol who did great so the curse must have some effect and even if PBG also from Reply, the ending make him like the low side (my observation see so many people doesn't agree with his character) and he get his 1st lead role for this one, so it doesn't usually worked good. Then he has many bad rumor after Reply 1988, it's a lot.
Combined all the things, it quite normal to worry about PBG.

Then the team looked like have a tight budget when they said that signing PBG is what make the the investment happen and at the time, PBG isn't Song Jong Ki or even had fanbase overseas, he just debut and just hit big also young, I don't think they ever expected that this drama can become the 1st in the timeslot,

Then we have KYJ who didn't really become the headline of the show ala KSH since KYJ didn't has any lead role before this drama and she is still so young while the casting get a big coverage as 1 of the romance with young female lead vs old male lead , the combining article between her, KYJ and KSR (no offense, just comparison)

on the other hand, it maybe luck or good strategies (either way doesn't make this drama less good) when CTH asked PBG came in 1N2D since the show is popular and he just so likable there . It's like in the week 2-3 so people who just want to catch the glimpse of the drama can like the drama right after it, even when he came - it doesn't specific for promoting his drama so it looked candid (it is candid), spontaneous and still the 1N2D people watched.

this drama also doesn't become mega popular ala DOTS, and I said it's a good thing, I do like popularity and acceptance but well they all just started their career as 1st lead that carry the show in this drama,
and it must be hurt to see people "mocked" their effort when it become hugely popular (it always happen to popular drama) because the criticism gonna be big when the rating is big

at last, thank god it is saeguk so the PPL giant hardly forced their way to the drama, no subway, no quinox, no mango cafe, no KIA, no blatant make up product (except the tiny one before it starts) and no Samsung, LG waterproof phone,

I beg to disagree about Ryu Junyeol being the most famous right after Reply ended. Yes, he was the revelation of the show but Hyeri and Bogum dominated all the CFs and press at the beginning of the year. Outside Junghwan he is a nugu, and at this point, he still is. It's just his very enthusiastic cult fandom that getting him all the buzz. He was lucky that he is with C-Jes because any lesser agency would not have gotten him a lead role opposite Hwang Jung-eum (also from C-Jes). If Junyeol can't carry a show with his peak popularity and a tested star as leading lady, it would be hard for him to get a lead again. So it's good that he is concentrating on bit/supporting parts on film for now.

"Park Bo-gum was cast as Lee Yeong from the start. There was no choice," Kim said. "Only with Park Bo-gum could we get the investment and TV slot. But I was worried."

The way I read that part of the article is that if they didn't cast PBG as Yeong then the show wouldn't have been possible at all. Investment and TV slot hinged on his casting, which is pretty interesting because KBS must really, really, really value him to be so forthright in their demands that PBG and only PBG be cast in whatever drama they'll pour money into. The director was worried because they needed to have PBG but PBG might not even be right for the role. But PBG's talent transcends genres. He's so good! I'm sure the director let go of his worries quickly enough.

And, to be honest, I adored the first two episodes. If I hadn't, then I doubt I'd be here. The first one established their characters for me, and the rest deepened them. That pit scene will remain my favourite, definitely.

Seeing how competitive these tv networks can be, it's no wonder why they'd be so desperate to secure Park Bo-gum, because SBS had Hye-ri in Entertainer, and MBC had Ryu Jun-yeol in Lucky Romance. I guess KBS wanna ride on the popularity of casts of Reply 1988 too.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yep. That's how I read that statement too. They call PBG as KBS's son and it is obvious they value him. They want no one else for the role but him. However, since he just shot to fame and still relatively new, I understand the worries of the PD.

I am now curious and I really want to see how PBG portrayed Yeong before they re-filmed episode 1 and 2. It's a wise decision because initial episodes are crucial in gaining the interest of viewers. I re-watched episode 1-2 last night and everything feels right about the characters. The first meeting of YeongOn will always be one of my favorites from the series.

some part is really out of prediction

"Park Bo-gum was cast as Lee Yeong from the start. There was no choice," Kim said. "Only with Park Bo-gum could we get the investment and TV slot. But I was worried."
===== so they literally said they are in tight budget?? even if PBG and KYJ is big now but they enter the game with just enough passing grade,

the casting of KYJ... the former child actress was the best fit for the job because her character had to have a petite figure and, more importantly, look younger than Park.
=====is this really the reason??

"Yoo-jung's doing so much better than expected," the director said. "I had no idea she'd do so well."
=====I don't want to sound like I had the silver line but it really feels like they cast her cause she is trusted, younger, affordable and available than what they had in their mind at 1st.

"I thought to myself I should just keep my expectations low, as the original web novel had been so popular," he said. "But seeing this kind of response, I'm wondering if it's ok like this, and if this is a story that deserves such a high viewership."
===== So he kinda implied that he wants and can give a better depth for the story if they really aimed for 20% hit mark, and feel that they didn't provide the grand story for the 20 % audience they had now,

well . . . I hope they still had the strength and focus to bring the best, they may didn't expected the success but it not just because of KYJ and PBG but also the whole team that worked in it so they deserved the praise and I hope this can bring more investment to their team cause they can deliver such a consistency

This is why domestic rating does matter
Its allow more budget, more freedom for production team and higher quality drama

I think everyone expected this drama to be lowkey, the plot is too cliche and simple, not much promotion. Even though the team didn't have much faith in it to pass 10%, I appreciated that they thrive to put out the best product that they could with utmost effort instead of doing just an average job. And they even re-shoot ep 1-2 with tight budget and time constrain.

I agree, the drama used a lot of familiar trope and not that shocking in their plot development, they just make the trope fresh by different approach (kinda like how an adaptation from a drama). I initially didn't mean to watch this drama, I mean I can always marathon it after it aired but I suddenly just watch 2 ep and constantly like it,

I don't want to offense anyone that read this but imo domestic rating means the most,
not making int-rating lower but imho, domestic rating is people who don't really care about the drama if it didn't entertain them in some way,
I am really sorry to said but Int-wise, Kdrama already has their viewer who will watch the pilot of support their fave actor anyway and those people (like us) most often only watch KDrama than any Korean show since we can get subs and we can chooses many,
while the korean viewer probably had better show in the time slot they can easily watched or just delayed it 3-4 hours after it aired. They also the one that responded faster with online feedback and in direct relation to the product showed in the drama.

This doesn't mean I agree with all of the domestic rating to quality but domestic rating still mean the most for making the resume and investment for people involved,

Yeah. both domestic and international feedback are important, but for the actors and people behind (writer, director, producer), domestic response holds more weight as it is influential in the next project and how much support they will get from investors and tv networks. It helps build the image of actors and determine their future works and other deals. I remember what W writer said about the importance of ratings to them and their future work. Ratings is not the sole criterion and it does not always determine quality, but the reality is it is very important. Kdramas are made for Koreans and not for international audience. They are the first and foremost target.

It's either the PD is really humble and downplaying everything or he's super insecure. I think it's the former though.

Thank you for sharing this interview! I really can't imagine the show without Bogum and Yoojung at the helm, I believe that they breathed and lived the Crown Prince and Ra-on so perfectly. It was interesting that he mentioned about the first two episodes being re-shot, because I wasn't totally sold on PBG as CP at first given that I'm a huge Bogum fan and was maybe still seeing him as Taek at that time too. But after that, there was no doubt in my mind he is Crown Prince. And given that Yoojung is only 17 and is able to have great chemistry with Bogum without being explicit, and no matter how fans may dislike it, I love that they are able show how in love and in sync they are. Which speaks volumes about their acting. So let's hope for an awesome ending for this heartfelt drama!

I've never been so addicted with a Kdrama since Save the Last Dance for Me of Jiung and Eugene. But this show does it for me again. I've been watching over and over again. It makes me giddy, I felt good during happy times of OTP and felt the pain when they are apart.

I just hope that there will be a happy ending for this drama.

More love for the Moonlight scene editor/producer because I just realized that every Tuesday episode, Ra On and Prince Yeong always end the episode together!
(Plus I had fun going down memory lane thinking about each episode)

Epi 2- Ra On being "saved" by Prince Yeong from being beheaded by Princess Myeongeun.
Epi 4- Ra On in her dancing Hanbok running away from Prince Yeong
Epi 6- Prince Yeong rescuing Ra On from the Chinese Embassador and riding away on horseback- "So stay by my side"
Epi 8- Prince Yeong confessing to Ra On- "From now on, I will treat you as the most beautiful woman in the world. May I do that?”
Epi 10- eunuch Han confronting Ra on for the first time and Prince Yeong appeared! "How do you know that name? Hong Ra On"
Epi 12- Ra On coming back to Prince Yeong after learning the truth from her mother.
And this episode 14- "I will never forgive you!" *hug*

Especially for episode 10 and 12 they could have very well ended with much more angst but they didn't. Like if Prince Yeong hadn't appeared at that instance when Eunuch Han confronted Ra On, or if they had just shown the whole scene between Ra On and her mom without showing her going back to Prince Yeong.

And at least I have hope that Ra On is with the Prince now so she is happier if not safer- after all the guy is awesome with a sword and a bow and arrow. Lol.

So I love the episode editor even more now. ❤️

Mhm...if they weren't so good with editing, we wouldn't have keep coming for more every week. Just imagine the pain we would've feel if they keep torturing us with bad cliffhanger, but instead we're presented with hope, enough to last us through the week, and then unravel all the knots in the following week.

Wow! Thank you for compiling this. We should thank them for being considerate of the audience and ending the even episodes this way so that the audience can be anxiety free for the rest of the week secure with the knowledge that no matter what, our OTP is together. If they are together, I think they can come out of any situation.

Love it! Very informative, I can imagine that Bogommy was too respectful & nervous of PM Kim to properly act in the beginning ha ha ha that part was very interesting

And the first two episodes they reshot turned out to be my fav episodes that just pulled me into absorption with the drama -- well done PD! Well done Bogummy. Well done Yoo Jung ah. Well done MDBC Team!

I think the part when Prime Minister Kim told that the younger minister Kim paid the assailant to get the information about Hong Ra On is a bit stupid, Because why would you even pay a criminal if you could just capture and torture him like what they already did and as if his that loyal to CP, Maybe the CP was too caught off guard to even reason it out with the Prime Minister not knowing that it is just a trap to read through him of how far those he know about Ra On's Identity.

You know what, you're a genius! I didn't even think of that! If they could torture the dead assailant for info, why couldn't they do the same with his family? I agree, Yeong was too caught up in his lost that he couldn't reason with anything, plus he's been pushing himself with work too, so he allowed himself to doubt Ra-on for a bit and snapped out of it in the end.

In all fairness, the PM made it sound as if they'd turned the assailant into mole against Baek. It actually sounded smart, if only the younger Minister Kim hadn't outed himself earlier as knowing nothing.

The excuse isn't flawless, but PM Kim primary purpose wasn't excusing Minister Dumb. He was fishing. Anyone looking at Yeong could easily tell he's in emotional distress. PM poked the wound and more or less got what he wanted.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

It was a poor excuse! They have no reason to reward or bribe the assailant's family because he was trying to kill the crown prince, that's treason and they deserved death penalty, giving worthy information could only get them pardoned from death sentence, certainly not golden bars. But I do agree that Minister Kim was fishing for Yeong's reaction to see if he already know about Ra-on, and Yeong being in his emotional condition wasn't in his right mind to counter them and definitely caught off guard.

0

But this is the same PM who managed to have the corrupt Minister Dumb reinstated out of sheer gall. The reasoning he gave last episode (that he worked hard when Yeong was injured and was therefore loyal and dutiful) was utter bullshit and everyone knew it.

Doesn't change the fact that said Minister was reinstated.

If Yeong were at his peak, he would have seen through this, but he was emotionally unstable and the PM could see this. That asshole had been emotionally manipulating the King for a long time now and he knew what he was doing.

0

imo Prime Minister stabbing the assailant cause he already gave out the sentences/confession he wants,
that the one that initiated CP assassination is Hong Ra On, there's no use to keep him alive for a long time cause he still on the death row for doing the attacks,
just that time, Lee young hasn't found out about the Dumb Minister involvement/money for the family,

now, after CP found out about the money they give to the assailant family used it to threaten the PM,
the PM implied that whatever he said about the dead assailant is no longer important cause the fact was his confession in front of many people including the guard that Hong Ra-on is the criminal.
They basically said to Lee Young that whatever the link he had to prove about the PM relation with the dead assailant will be stomped by the appearance of Hong Ra On.

No one knew Ra-on is alive, the dead assailant/DA give his confession about her well being and no one left to confirm the truth, so if Ra-on is found then DA testimony is right, therefore DA will have no relation to the PM since DA's boss in obviously Ra-On
that's my take on it,

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think Prime Minister knew that Yeong is aware of the Dumb Minister machination and basically said their link with assailant doesn't matter anymore if they can get Hong Ra On on the court.

Her existence will prove that the assailant give the right information and the assailant's family gonna get the reward anyway.
So by saying the family is rewarded means that Hong Ra On is exist and they'll capture her as the real assailant.
Therefore it's a threat that they'll bring Ra-On no matter what to prove that the minister had nothing to do with the assailant and also to see his reaction (since minister dumb told him about his strange behavior, will he doubts her or believe in her)

If we did not get that last hug scene I'd still be thinking that Yeong will spend the entire week buried in his work while treating everyone coldly. He'd wallow in sadness and confusion of whether Raon betrayed him or not. Not the thought I'd like to keep until episode 15, so thank goodness for that short but powerful scene in the end. The production team is kind to us viewers.

True, that scene was my saving grace. I was as heartbroken as Yeong during this episode. I'd take anxiety than anguish any day.

I agree, I was actually referring to when they both finally gave in to their emotions and cried their hearts out.

0

I think Ra-on felt alone too, at that time. Yoon-sung was there, but her posture suggested an emotional isolation. She didn't turn to him for comfort when he offered it. She hunched over and buried her head in her arms, basically shutting him out (however unintentionally it was). She was as every bit as lost in her heartache as Yeong was.

what a boring show ever. can't believe i got cheated because of the high rating. I guess i hate it when i can't feel any chemistry from the lead pairing. no sparkle nada. Also I never like any character that KYJ played.

This shows also remind me of the moon embrace the son where the crown prince is so handsome, perfect bla bla but it does not excite me at all. Why does the writer make PBG and KYJ's character had that kind of force interaction in the earlier eps. It just make them lost the natural chemistry that i try to find sigh

If you can't find chemistry between the leads, then I suggest you to just drop this show instead of try watch all the episode.

The music served the "wordless" expression of pain, longing, and love, whether required or unrequited, anger, fear, that powerfully and compellingly delivers the narrative leaving the viewers completely invested or reeled in the story.

If I've learned one thing from Moonlight, it is not to believe what you see at first glance. They've been very good with surprising us with the twists and turns. There have been a lot of unanswered questions raised throughout this episode, and the show is so so so good in leaving us hanging but then explaining everything logically in the next episode.

I refuse to believe that our Yeong and Ra On will be captured. Nope. He's too smart for that, and knowing that Minister Kim knows that Yeong already knew about Ra On, then he wouldn't just risk everything without plans and contingency plans for those plans. Do you hear me, show, I REFUSE!

Everything was just pitch perfect in this episode. AGAIN. That new scene with them staring at the moon, being darling and lovely and smitten, just made me want to see them like that again so much. Can you imagine them in the future, our Prince now this awesome King, and our Eunuch has become the loveliest Queen, and they'll still giggle and make faces and frolic like puppies? They have this bright energy about them when they're together, effervescent and full of joy that makes it such a pleasure to watch.

Do you hear me again, show? I WANT THAT.

You can actually feel how Yeong has thawed around Yoon-sung and then gotten colder towards Byung-yeon. I mean, I might be mistaken, but it's possible that his lack of appearance meant that Yeong doesn't want to see him because he suspects Byung-yeon of lying to him repeatedly. Hmmm.

I normally like watching the bride selection but realised early on that that would only be true if Ra On was in that position. Still, Ha-yeon is really just amazing too. Yeong is gentle with her most of the time, as he is

The Princess and Duk Ho! Oh my god, how cute are they???

I was chuffed to bits to see Yeong still so capable even with his secret heartbreak. He just channels all of his pain into making sure his people are treated fairly. Sometimes I wish he'd just fire all of the Ministers and hire good, young visionaries to help make Joseon a better country. I was incredibly heartened when he said to Ha Yeon, 'As I accepted this deal, I shall commit myself to my duties,' because it gives me hope that the show will end this the way I wish it will: Yeong on the throne and Ra On beside him. But I just don't know how they're going to end this aside from the obvious.

The crying scene. Oh man. Okay. See, I'm weird. When sad things happen, I don't cry. I just bottle it in until it feels like I'm going to drop from the weight in my chest. But when happy things happen, I bawl like a baby. Go figure. I was fully expecting Ra On to weep painfully and for Yeong to be more quiet about it because, you know, gender stereotypes, but damn if they didn't move me deeply anyway. They're just such incredible actors.

And the show just keeps delivering these fantastic parallels between them! Ra On, who's always lived in the vast world, was crying in a beautiful open space, by the LAKE if you hadn't noticed, and Yeong, who has grown up in the most revered place in Joseon, let loose his anguish in a beautifully polished but empty room. Maaaaaaaaan, it just drives home their conversation under the moonlight again. So, so, so good!

The Queen really does give me chills. I want to sympathise with her because she can't even look at the baby boy without disgust, presumably because she's forced to part with her real child, but choices, lady! You have them!

Only four episodes left. I don't know what I'll do to fill this gaping void Moonlight will leave after it ends but at the same time I'm so glad I found this show because it made me fall in love with Park Bo Gum. Has anyone noticed his skin's been breaking out lately? And the dark circles under his eyes. Foundation can only do so much. Probably from the sleepless nights and stress and dedication to do his best. SQUISH. I want him, and the cast, to take a well-deserved break after this.

I feel bad for the queen and the newborn princess, I hope she grows up well outside of palace, away from the ugliness inside the palace.

I noticed his skin was breaking out and the dark circle too! But I just can't bear to let them go. 2 weeks sounds too fast. >_<

I am sooooo late in joining in with all the discussions and with catching up on all the comments - 450 comments, good grief, mountain to climb!

Will trawl through this soon, but just wanted a space to vomit my thoughts out, even if they have already been voiced out in this place many times in earlier comments. Apologies to beanies to feel that they've already heard it all before... Anyway... here goes.

.
.
THIS EPISODE!!!

This episode honest-to-goodness hit me like a stone in the chest. Yesterday's episode was bittersweet and poignant, but this episode was a wrecker, certified wrecker. I felt as though I was thrown back into my high-school past where youthful first love was intense, all-consuming and absorbing, and then the big break-up hits and you're left reeling in bewilderment wondering where it all went wrong and how you were going to cope.

And because you were at school, you had to keep it all together and still try and get the grades because how can something as trivial as heart-break possibly be allowed to impact something as momentous as your future (because good grades determine your future!). Everyone from your family and friends worried about you but you still have to put up a facade that everything's ok so that you don't burden them...

I was right there with Ra On, every single moment of the way, and it was seriously awful. Just plain awful. I knew exactly what it was like to cope like that, and how it felt to be able to just let it out in despairing sobs when the heart hurt so damn bad...

I hate it. I hate it that this drama reminds me of things I once felt and endured in the past. I hate it that this drama has moved me in the way no other drama has before - yes, none of the previous youthful dramas has impacted me like this. I hate it for being just so damn good at what it is doing that it is dragging me into the whole story and making me drown all over again in emotions and feelings which I thought were lost in the mist of time. My heart hurts so much I even wished I did not start watching this drama.

I thought over why, why was I so affected, and yes, the acting was superb (Kim Yoo Jung, you are KILLING ME. KILLING ME!). But you know what, it was also the way the character coped that just brought that boulder crashing down. In a day where there was no cellphones, no internet, no karaoke, no clubs or bars, that was how you coped. Distraction techniques were so different back in the past compared to today. I'm probably dating myself by saying all this, but back in my days, the coping mechanisms were just so different to today's methods.

We don't drown ourselves in alcohol or with gorging on comfort food. We didn't have social media or discussion forums or the world-wide-web to go to for solace and re-calibration or for a sense of perspective. No self-help books or Agony Aunts.

Maybe that's why previous youth romances, while they touched my heart, never really moved me in such a raw and...

0

Required fields are marked *

... I ran out of characters...

I can't believe I am writing this here but honest-to-goodness, this youth sageuk has somehow connected with me in crazy unexpected ways, I am now reduced to blabbering like a madwoman. Sigh... I hate that it has made me like this. And I was coping fine actually, until THIS EPISODE!

Anyway, it was Ra On's heartbreak and they way she tried to cope and the way she broke down that really did it for me. Hit me like a ton of bricks. And so, I take my hat off to Kim Yoo Jung, to the director, to the writer, to the music editor, to the entire production crew, because, congratulations! You have won my deepest, greatest respect, ever.

Park Bo Gum, you were good, really really good. And I can completely understand and relate to the way Yeong coped in his own way. But Ra On and Kim Yoo Jung just KILLED ME.

I am so damn glad that the episode ended with them being together and embracing. Even if the guards break in and all hell breaks loose, it's still okay with me. Anything is okay with me as long as we do not go back to that kind of heart-breaking separation again. Please, no no no no.

I'd much rather they face adversity and hell together, than suffer being apart.

There! I've said my piece. Done!

"I’d much rather they face adversity and hell together, than suffer being apart."

This is what I would like, for once, to see in my kdrama lovebirds. It is rare. Don't they know it is better to have someone to lean on in times of problems rather than go through it alone and just be in depressed state all the time? Pinocchio OTP almost did this, but still went for the separation. The consolation was, OTP realized that they should just have been there for each other. Better late than never, I guess.

Yessss... people who love each other are better and stronger together than apart. If this drama can also show us the power of unity overcoming all odds, that would be soooo wonderful.

I have been putting off viewing the subbed version of Ep. 14. It was too hard to watch it again. I just feel for the puppies they are in pain. But production crew props for cliffhangers. They just kill all the time. Plus the music is on point. I want the whole OST in one go!

PD Kim Sung Yoon's comments from the Korean article about Kim Yoo Jung. For some reason the English version posted above does very little justice to the original Korean article and KYJ's contribution to the success and all the praise from the PD:

"If the Producer had worries regarding the casting of Park Bo Gum as the male lead, one could imagine his concern over the casting of Kim Yoo Jung. Not to mention, Kim Yoo Jung is only 17 of age, which meant they needed to give up all emotional or love scenes in the original novel that might create controversies. In spite of all the challenges, her experience accumulated through years of acting as a child actress prevailed. No one could have portrayed the girl-in-disguise, Ra On more adorably than Kim Yoo Jung in "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds". Kim PD praised, "Yoo Jung has truly exceeded all expectations. I have no idea she could perform so well."

[Parts on casting requirements of Ra On and the visual compatibility with PBG were edited out as the English article has already mentioned the key points]

Having selected an actress in her late 10s to be the female lead, they had to let go of some of the romantic scenes in the original novel. They even had to tread carefully when it comes to kiss scenes. Kim PD said, "Even without those scenes, PBG and KYJ had no trouble expressing their passionate love for each other." He is very satisfied of the end result.

"For our drama, compared to the role of Crown Prince, the role of Hong Ra On is more three-dimensional (or well-rounded). What I mean is that, if the female lead were to perform poorly (or sub-par), this series would be as good as over. But Yoo Jung portrayed the progression of her relationship with the Crown Prince very well as she developed deeper feelings in stages. The scene in which Hong Ra On was imprisoned, when she maintained a calm and serene demeanor during her meeting with the Crown Prince, she performed especially well. In the scene where they gaze into each other's eyes, she acted with her eyes and conveyed the emotions very well. After that, Bo Gum and Yoo Jung worked with each other seamlessly in the romantic scenes. I even told Yoo Jung, "I have completely underestimated you. You are absolutely amazing."

[He also addressed netizens' concerns on why they stand behind their decision to reveal Ra On's identity as a woman earlier than traditional girl-in-disguise dramas usually do.

Also addressed why Yoo Jung's women costumes looked underwhelming (translator's note: I think he is referring to the dress she wears to meet the prince or the lack of scenes of Ra On in women clothes in general) when compared to the male lead - turns out the main reason is they were so pressed for time in filming/producing that they did not have enough time to select the attires, as the selection for good/appropriate women costumes for sageuks are more complicated.)

Korean article: http://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=001&aid=0008728261

Kim Sung Yoon PD, “Yoojungie is doing beyond my expectations. I didn’t expect her to be this good. Because of Yoojung’s age, it’s true that there’s lot of worries back then. When I was reviewing some actors (during casting), I also saw some who are in early 20s. But the most important key is it can’t be someone who will give Noona-feels to Bogum. If we cast someone who is in her 20s, she will look a lot older compare to Bogum. Moreover in the original novel, Hong Ra On gives off small and tender vibes, it’s important to bring this kind of feel to life. ”
(thanks to MaknaeC for the translation on the 'Moonlight' soompi thread)

Very happy to see the praise from the PD. Kim Yoo Jung has done an incredible job with the role and I hope she gets more recognition for it. Don't get me wrong, I think PBG has done a phenomenal job as well and deserves all the praise he has received but this drama would not have worked so well without Yoo jung's excellent work too. It often saddens me how actresses doing stellar work are overlooked due to the popularity of the lead actors.

Thank you, ShyShy, for sharing all this information!

It is always so interesting and insightful to read about the behind-the-scenes goings-on. Having the PD provide some feedback is one of the best as he is such a key person in the whole production team, and if he is not clear on how he wants his drama to be, everything falls apart - good script, good actors and good crew notwithstanding.

Bogum is only 23 and he does look young for his age so I can understand the concern of having another 20-something year-old actress acting opposite him may make her seem more like his noona than a delicate little girl (per the webtoon).

Having said that, I am sure there were other teenage girls whom they could have casted opposite Bogum, but I am so very very very glad that Kim Yoo Jung was offered (and she accepted) the role.

I've always been a fan of hers since her child-acting days, and I know that she has great acting ability, especially in sageuk. I honestly do not think anybody could have done the role of Ra On as well as she has. She has just been too amazing, especially in these last 2 episodes. She just stole the show, for me.

I, too, hope that she can get more recognition and more acknowledgement of her work in this drama. Bogum deserves all the accolades he is getting, but not every actress could have matched him, emotion for emotion, heart for heart, the way KYJ did, I believe.

You can't just have one actor being really good and acting circles round his co-star (like some dramas I could name *ahem*), it makes the whole show so terribly imbalanced, and the chemistry would not have been as sparkly or as heart-stopping, as this one was.

So, huge huge kudos to Kim Yoo Jung. She and PBG really had a big task to carry the drama, and as far as I am concerned, they have delivered in spectacular fashion.

PS: Just another note. Am glad that the PD said something about KYJ not having enough scenes in female hanbok. I have been wondering about that because I remembered in another article, he said that she would be looking 'more feminine' at the later stages in the drama and even after ep14, we are still seeing her in men's clothes.

Am a bit gutted that the team did not have enough time to choose her clothes. But since the story flow makes allowances for it, I guess I can't complain too much. It's just such a shame that KYJ's ability to wear female hanbok and look so lovely in them, is not well utilised.

@Anh Yoojung looks absolutely luminous when she wears a hanbok. Re "Because I Miss You" LY version - I was so happy to read your post about the upcoming release. HCY's OST, right?

It's a shame that this show is so pressed for time, but the fact that they can pull off amazing show despite it shows extreme dedications on their parts, and thankfully most of the leads are youngins. I'd love to see Yoo-jung in female hanbok, but I wouldn't want them to stress about that and sacrifice far more important stuff like plot movement. I can't wait to see them kids fighting the big bad corrupt officials and save the day.

While I would very much like to see KYJ in absolutely beautiful and grandiose hanbok, I think the simple one fits the story more. She is no noble woman anyway. Also, we still don't know how she came to possess that lavander hanbok (and I don't think we'll get an answer). At the end is where I am hoping to see her wear something really really grand.

re: that lavender hanbok
Perhaps fairy gatmother left it for her like cinderella or something lolz

0

I'd like to believe she bought it for herself, in hope she could be free to wear it one day. Because, trust me, I love all that fairy godmother stuff and all, but I like a woman who takes action.

0

LMAO @Anh, now I can't stop imagining Fairy Gatmother singing and waving his sword around and pulling pretty hanboks out of nowhere.

0

@mary
it could have been hand sewn you know, our fairy gatmother has serious skill in that department :)

Thank you, ShyShy for the sharing the post.

I think Kim Yoo-jung, despite her age, is already an established actress, so everyone didn't make much fuss about her because sageuk is her expertise. Unlike Park Bo-gum who is new to the field and suddenly showing breakout performance. But we can all agree, we fully respect their phenomenal performances, and this drama is an excellent proof of their best teamwork done right. And I've watched in interview before, that director Kim Sung-yoon adores Yoo-jung the most on set, lol, I'm so happy she's getting lots of love even at workplace.

Thanks for sharing this @ShyShy

I agree. This drama would not have worked so well if only one of the leads was doing an excellent job. PBG is excellent on his own, but for this story to work on different levels, a strong female lead is needed and we have that in KYJ. I have seen dramas where only one of the leads shines and it does nothing good to the story. The imbalance is obvious and takes away a lot from the story and what it could have been. Here, PBG and KYJ complement each other with each of their different strengths in acting and experience.

I didn't get to read all the comments but I have a feeling the scene witnessed by little princess where CP's mom's court lady was killed will come into play. At the time, PM was asking her what she was trying to sneak to CP before he killed her. So what was she trying to get to CP? Maybe CP will find it in the next couple episodes if little princess mentions it? Hmmm?

phew. i though they're gonna leave me with unreasonable depressed feeling until next week, so thanks God for the last 10 seconds scene.

yes, i do think the episode move in very slow pace. but to be fair, it is break up episode. i guess they want us to embrace the sadness along with character. and i did feel hopeless during the whole show.

i just hope Raon can do more about their relationship. it feels like it is always CP who always step up and fight for it. it is sweet, but i still want Raon be, i don't know, more a fighter and rebel a little bit than be just goody goody heroine. i miss the old Raon.

also, i want they build more friends/brother sister relationship between Byung-yeon and Raon. it seems they did in the beginning of the shows, but kinda lost it along the end.

and poor yoon-sung. as 2nd male lead character, he's sure has not been given much chance to develop strong triangle love story (unlike the other show, wink2, where its 2nd lead kinda steal every possible big romance scenes :)). although, i like he contributes more in political plot. i always thought he will become somewhat strong contender to throw down CP throne. but i was wrong.

I love that the second leads don't have a chance with the main leads here. It gives the show room to focus on building the relationship between Yeong and Ra-on.

I don't think Ra-on was ever a rebel. Like in the first episode, I doubt she would have helped out the couple there had she known the woman was a widow and not the single daughter of a lord.

It's also kind of hard to defend a relationship that could likely you killed and your partner dethroned/exiled/killed as well. She had every reason to go last episode. I love that she became more affectionate, though.

Yeah, in this drama, the second leads did not stand a chance. There's no swaying between two guys for Raon here and the same goes for Yeong. The love triangle is not meant to be strong. From day one, it has always been YeongOn; hence, the story progressed in showing the development of their relationship.

I absolutely love that the second leads here are not defined by their place in the love polygon. They are not there as mere providers of conflict to the OTP. In fact, they provide little conflict because OTP is very strong. It is not to say that the second leads are not important. Yes they suffer from unrequited love, but they've reached a point (or at least we are getting there) where they went beyond wanting their love to be returned. Their roles have greater influence in the grand scheme of things. Yoonsung being a Kim and a former friend and Hayeon symbolizing political ally for the King. Hayeon and Yoonsung are slowly growing on their own and I look forward to their decisions and actions in the future.

Yoon-sung knows so many secrets, he'll probably be the key to the Kims' undoing if he chooses to stand by Yeong.

Ha-yeon can rally influence for Yeong in the court, although she's not as independent of the loveline as YS is.

This show is killing me, both leads are absolutely gorgeous with actings surpass beyond amazing. Would never imagine other actors to potray CP and RO the way PBG and KYJ do. This is the best show i have ever watched, all aspects are beautiful, the story line, the actors, the actings, the cinematography, the songs. I hope the show will win many awards...

I think CP does not a gentleman
He loves RO , that is ok
But it does not mean he should be mean to YH , the future Queen , she will have power and she can crush him easily
As CP he should be wise and tries to have more friends than enemy
Why he had to be mean to young Kim YS too
Why he always turn friend YS to potential enemy

I have seen this comment a lot in Soompi, and I feel it's unfair to both Yeong and Ha-yeon.

Yeong was in an emotionally (and mentally) bad place. He didn't treat Ha-yeon like dirt, but he was firm in maintaining their distance. He was curt, but I'd like to think he'd have apologized later, once he's in a better state of mind. He had always been polite (and rather cheeky) with her, but he just couldn't muster the energy to be nice to anyone now.

I felt sorry for Ha-yeon either. She was aware the Prince was hurting, but had no idea where to place her boundaries. She was naive to believe that her devotion would lead to appreciation (and perhaps eventually that will be the case) and then love (which he believed would never happen). I don't think she'll turn against him. He wasn't being fair to her, but I don't think she'll take this against him. Hopefully. She's been such a refreshing second lead so far.

What qualify as a gentleman?

For me, a gentleman should never play with a woman's feelings, which in this case, Yeong did not. He never gave Ha-yeon any hope of any sort, in fact, he told Ha-yeon before, "I can't give you any heart." I think it'd be more cruel if he gives her hope that he couldn't ever fulfill, and this royal marriage was forced on him.

From Ha-yeon point of view, his action might be mean but from a viewer point of view, it was not mean at all. All along, he had made it clear that he will be cold to her, that he loves someone else.

He doesn't verbally or physically abuse her. The library and the garden has always been his private place that no one can enter without permission (in earlier episode, RO was told off for lingering in the library) so it understandable that Hayeon was at fault for keep evading his private space even though there's a clear "no entry"

If hayeon does become queen, she will not crush yeong, because if yeong sink, her family sink as well. If she wants to crush him, he can dethrone her. The deal goes both way.

CP-YS is freniemy-ish, Yeong was wary of YS due to him being the sole heir to the Kim clan. And the Kims have too much power in court, they can even make everyone quit attending court if they want so of course, it's hard for yeong to not be distance from YS and put up his guard. Because who knows when he will be ambushed.

To be fair, I do think he was supposed to come off as a bit rude in that scene. He was courteous to Ha-yeon before, even as he continually rejected her. Ha-yeon intruded in his private place during a very bad time for him. I understand his instinctive anger even as I felt sorry for her because she was only trying her best to reach out to him.

Let me rephrase: he wasn't rude, but he was cold - colder than he had ever been to Ha-yeon before. I know he's in pain, and I understand why he'd acted as he did. She intruded in his private space, even though she meant well.

Neither Yeong nor Ha-yeon were at fault. That scene was really well acted. It's not wrong of him to set boundaries for her, but it's not wrong of her to try to make their marriage amicable.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, It was not rude at all. Yeong did tell Hayeon that she will be treated coldly and she still accepted it. Also, knowing how Yeong feels toward his impending wedding and to Hayeon, Hayeon should have known better than to seek him out and attempt to form some kind of bond or whatever it is. Yeong was crystal clear about how he feels toward another woman and how he sees Hayeon. I don't think it was completely wrong of Hayeon to want something out of their political relationship. She does have feelings for him, but she knows exactly what she's getting herself into which is a huge heartbreak, so I think it is best for her to just be supportive like what she promised and not hope for something more.

0

I think she was being supportive. She noticed he was down and told to him to bear up. She wasn't asking for affection but offering support.

However Yeong said she would be treated coldly, I still think he would've been more courteous to her had he been in a better emotional state. He still would've told her to stay out of the garden, but his show of displeasure would've been less.

0

supportive or affectionate .its all the same .chick wants to get laid .leave him he's totally spoken for .

0

I don't think CP was mean or rude to HY. As Anh says, HY intruded on CP's private space and deserved to be told off.

@Anh, sorry to keep asking - since Hwang Chi Yeol's OST appears to have been held back, would you know if it will be released at all during the drama? I'd prefer to know for sure rather than keep on hoping for the last four episodes of the drama. Many thanks.

I think it also says we'll hear it on episode 15? *shivers with excitement*

0

@Elle
From my understanding, the last sentence does not say that OST will be played in ep 15, but rather something like

MDBC air head to head with SBS Moonlover and has been staying number 1 in term of rating for mon-tues drama. Ep 15 will be broadcast on 10 of Oct at 10pm

But I do think they might play it in ep 15, considering that fact that they will release the OST at midnight

0

I hope it's a sweet ballad. If anything, at least it will guarantee sweet moments ahead for our OTP.

0

Yey! Also PBG's song will be played in Episode 15! Cannot wait!

0

Hi Anh thanks for your reply. I don't understand Korean at all - but it seems there's no mention of HCY's OST in that article. Never mind .. I'll just wait and see .. if his song doesn't get released, I'll just bear with it..several happy HCY events in October have happened already to compensate for this. HCY has a collaboration single with GFriend's Eunha "Fall, In Girl" scheduled for release on October 12, 00:00 KST, so I'll anticipate this :)
