Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 14
by HeadsNo2
There’s loads of development when it comes to our two lovebirds this hour, even if it comes wrapped in bittersweet packaging. It’s great to have two people who know how to be honest with each other, though there’s the inevitable trial and error as they face issues that can’t be easily ignored. And while Su may have found more of a place in a world that’s growing less and less new to her by the year, that same world always seems to want her dead. Good times in Goryeo.
EPISODE 14 RECAP
It’s the year 945, the second year of King Hyejong’s (formerly Crown Prince Mu’s) reign, and two years after the events of the last episode. Su is now sanggung, the highest attainable rank for a court lady, and rules over Damiwon like Court Lady Oh once did.
She’s also turned much more serious according to her rank, and writes down notes about the king’s somewhat ailing health in Hangul, which wasn’t an invention of that time. Chae-ryung, now a court lady as well, cheerily gives Su a pouch she can use on her injured knee. It’s Su’s birthday after all, though Su says the best gift is having Chae-ryung in Damiwon with her.
Chae-ryung said she was only freed from her servitude to Wook’s household on Su’s behalf, which causes Su to lose the small smile she had.
Thirteenth prince Baek-ah gives Su scented oil from Bulgaria, much to So’s ire. He apparently brought nothing back for Su from whatever journey they were on, which he claims is how it should be—the gift of his return should be enough for a court lady.
Later that night, Su hears the sound of a very ill dog howling, but it turns out to be So. Hah, he claims he made sure to not make the sound too realistic so she wouldn’t be fooled. Sure. He tries again in front of her, causing Su to fight the smile threatening to break out from his antics.
He takes her to an outdoor spot where they can best see the stars, and the two bicker over how much they each know about astronomy. After Su tells him the sad story of the Cassiopeia constellation, he tells her about how long ago, he’d seen his younger brother Jung in his mother’s lap and wished desperately for him to just disappear.
His mother had seen the look on his face and hid Jung, causing So to muse, “Perhaps she already knew that I would become a person who would kill my own brother.” Su tells him that it’s normal to think that of one’s younger siblings, and describes how she used to wish for her own sibling to disappear.
So smiles, “Are you trying to make me give up on you, or do you want me to only have eyes for you?” He describes how all his problems seem to go away whenever he sees her, so he can’t very well live without her now. “If you’re not going to come to me, don’t leave me with hope. It’s torture.”
He leans in for a kiss, but Su quickly puts a hand to his lips to stop him. Didn’t he say he would get her permission first? So chances a smile as he asks for her permission now, but he’s denied. He’s also denied from stealing a kiss, which Su preempts before he even has a chance. Aw.
So says that the king will marry her off to an old man at this rate, but Su’s not worried, since the king holds her in high regard. Foiled, So lies back to look at the stars before asking her to spend her upcoming day off with him. He has something he’ll tell her then.
Wook claims to speak for the ailing King Hyejong as he calls for a restructuring of the military at the next assembly, but So calls him out for using the king’s illness in order to become regent. Despite Wook being a high-ranking official now, So warns him against making up orders from the king, since he’ll start to make people angry.
His half-brother laughs, claiming to be impressed by how So’s handling politics now. So says he only got into politics to be able to go against Wook, since he still suspects him. Wook says he’ll heed the warning, but adds that he went a little further than he would have because it was something he couldn’t get done as “just” a high-ranking official.
King Hyejong’s health is failing him, and Chae-ryung acts suspiciously as she’s left in charge of adding herbs to the king’s bath. Ninth prince Won waits for her outside the bath, and makes a not-so-cryptic comment about having more mercury delivered for the palace’s mirrors. Whatever the scheme is, Chae-ryung seems to be in on it with him.
The king complains of his unease and inability to sleep to Wook, who looks on dispassionately as the king wraps himself in a blanket. Wook coldly advises the king to abdicate the throne to him, promising to help the king live in comfort if he does so.
Hyejong stars behaving even more erratically the next day as he sends his very young daughter off to be married. She can’t even have reached puberty at the age she’s at, and cries for her father not to send her away—and to the Khitan, no less.
In the king’s warped mind, he believes the marriage will provide a useful alliance for him in the future, so he won’t hear his daughter’s pleas. So does, however, since her cries remind him of himself when he was that age, and how he’d cried for his mother when she’d tied him to the top of the palace gates and… had archers use him for flaming arrow target practice? What the hell, lady?
So tries to step in on the little girl’s behalf, but the king has gone stark raving mad. That’s when he turns to So and asks if he’ll marry the princess and protect him. Oh no.
As promised, Su waits for So on her day off, adorned in silk clothes and the hairpin he once gifted her. So notices the hairpin immediately, and carefully masks his inner turmoil as he puts on a smile for her. But when Su reminds him that he said he had something to say to her, So plays dumb and says he can’t remember what it was.
He pokes fun at her for having high expectations for what he was going to say, and Su does her best to hide her disappointment. Since So feels bad, he promises to make it up to her, which includes a boat ride out on the water. Noticing her tight grip on the boat’s edges, he tips the boat to and fro as a joke, unaware of just how much Su fears falling into the water.
She asks him if this is his boat, and he claims he brought it to the palace when he was younger. She scoffs a bit at him saying the boat is his favorite thing in the palace since she never sees him in it, to which he replies, “Because I like it too much.” Afraid that he’d come to like it too much and not want to leave the palace because of it, he didn’t use the boat on purpose. I’m guessing this is less about the boat and more about a metaphor for their relationship.
Su looks thoughtful for a moment before she says, “I was thinking about what it must be like to turn away from something you like. I also thought that it’s a relief you don’t have to do that anymore.” The meaning behind her words has So feeling guilty, and he apologizes for “forgetting” what he wanted to say to her.
We find out later that So has made the decision to marry the king’s young daughter in order to help protect his older brother. That way, he’ll make his evil mother and the Shinju clan believe he’s next in line for the throne, which will enable him to deflect some of the attacks aimed at the king.
Astronomer Choi praises him for his political calculations on this one, even though So’s not happy about the decision. “Am I back to being a dog on a leash to protect my brother?” he asks. “Is this my destiny? I am sick and tired of having to turn my back on the things I like.”
When he asks how he can free himself from such a situation, Astronomer Choi seems to jokingly imply that he could revolt. But in the end, he can only thank So for helping to protect the king in his hour of need.
The king, back to being sane for the moment, knows that Wook is only reading him appeals for the fourth prince to leave the palace because Wook wants to clear his own path to the throne. Wook claims that he only said what he said out of loyalty, but the king knows better than to buy it—he does plan on sharing his burden with one of his brothers, but it’s clear it won’t be Wook.
It’s So who comes to visit, which is when the king declares that So will be marrying his daughter. But since she’s too young to have children, he’s agreed that So can make her his second wife only. The king tells Wook that he plans on giving the throne to So, who is not only his brother, but also his son-in-law.
Wook pretends to accept this information with a congenial smile, but he can’t resist the pointed barb at So: “I hope there aren’t any girls crying over losing such a good man for a husband.” Oooh.
Su fashions modern face masks for both fourteenth prince Jung and tenth prince Eun’s wife, but afterward, Eun takes issue with how much Jung compliments his wife on her skin. She leaves in a huff after he compares her to Su (again), and Su chastises him for acting that way toward a wife who everyone knows he likes. It’s been three years and he still treats her like she has cooties?
Thanks to Eun’s big mouth, Su finds out about So’s impending marriage and spends the evening brooding. So knows she’s heard the second he sees her face, but he doesn’t attempt to shift the blame. She can hate him all she wants.
He reminds her that he promised to take her out of the palace and set her free, but now, he won’t be able to keep to his word. “Are you not even going to give me an excuse?” Su asks dejectedly. So knows that he can’t give her a reason for breaking her trust, so he’s not going to try. All Su can do is half-heartedly congratulate him, even as tears fall from her eyes.
Baek-ah delivers a letter from So to Su, claiming that this is So’s excuse. The poem reads, “Walking until the water’s edge, I sit and watch as clouds rise up and appear.” It’s from “Villa on Zhongnan Mountain” by Chinese poet Wang Wei, and Su sighs that she didn’t know he could write so well, adding that there’s a lot she doesn’t know about him.
Su tries to parse out the poem excerpt as she remembers what So said about wanting her to experience the same freedom he did when he was an ambassador, and how being king would mean nothing to him if he didn’t have her. The latter part of the voiceover continues as So keeps vigil at his sick brother’s bedside.
She attempts to trace over his characters with her own, mimicking his handwriting as best she can. She repeats the poem over and over with tears in her eyes as So gets married in another part of the palace.
Jung pays a visit to his mother in a nearby temple, only to find her with a bearded and somewhat bedraggled third prince Yo. Of course he’s alive. No one’s ever died from falling off a cliff in sageuk.
The white-haired Queen Sinmyeongsunseong is overjoyed at her son’s re-emergence, though he’s had to stay in hiding because of his current status as a traitor. Jung tells his older brother that he’ll ask the king to pardon and reinstate Yo, but even Yo knows how foolish an idea that is when he’s known for trying to steal the throne.
Yo already knows about the wedding to take place between So and the king’s daughter, which has raised suspicions that the king plans to abdicate to So. Jung admits that he’s against So taking the throne, but he won’t become a traitor to stop him. That’s when Yo claims that it isn’t treason if you win. (Isn’t it?)
Still, Jung says that he’ll stand by the king, despite Yo telling him that the king has gone mad. Does he want to leave Goryeo in the hands of a mad king, or any person a mad king leaves in power?
That night, Jung sneaks into the palace despite the king closing it off to any and all outsiders. So sees this and gives chase with a contingent of guards, eventually ending up at Su’s quarters. They’ve somehow deduced that this is the only room Jung could be in, but Su firmly forbids them from entering, using her high rank as the reason they cannot enter.
When So decides to ignore her order and search the room himself, Su threatens to use her hairpin to pierce her own throat with if he takes one step further. Claiming that she can’t suffer the disgrace of having him enter her room (as she’s unmarried), she’d rather die.
She further adds that if So wants to gain entry, he’ll have to bring an order from the king to do so. So asks if she’s sure that no one’s in her room, and she flatly answers that she’s sure, and scratches her neck with the hairpin for added effect.
So and his men are forced to leave, and Su collapses once she gets back into her room. Jung is hiding there after all, and worries over her scratch—was she really going to stab herself with her hairpin? Su says that she didn’t have much of a choice, since she wants to avoid any conflict between the princes.
Jung asks her which side she’d take if the princes were ever to fight each other, prompting Su to answer that she’d have no reason to take anyone’s side. He reminds her that they can’t go back to the days where they were all friends, and that she’ll have to choose a side soon.
“Even so,” Su replies, “I don’t think I will be able to take anyone’s side, because I do not wish for anyone to get hurt. I’m going to make sure that happens.” Jung can’t help but smile at her when she eventually falls asleep, and even tucks her in just to be adorable.
So confronts Su the next day, and forcefully drags her out of Damiwon to ask her if Jung was in her room. Despite her claiming that didn’t happen, So knows better, and demands an explanation. Su asks him to do some explaining to her then, and he can start with his marriage.
He tells her that he had to save the king’s daughter from becoming a hostage to the Khitan, and marrying her was the only option he had. Su gets teary-eyed as she tells him that he should’ve just said that from the beginning, but says he couldn’t because he didn’t know what he could say to her.
He knows she hates the idea of multiple wives, and all his attempts to avoid that happening have now amounted to nothing. What could he have said to her? At least Su is honest in response, as she admits that Jung was in her room last night, though for reasons she claims are innocuous.
So wants her to make a promise not to lie again, but Su asks what she should do if there’s something neither of them want to admit. In that case, So says, she should just admit she doesn’t want to say whatever it is, because he hates liars the most. In return, he promises not to lie to her either.
“Are you not angry anymore?” he ventures carefully, and Su shakes her head. She asks if he regrets getting married (we only saw a glimpse of the ceremony earlier), and he shakes his head as he replies that he doesn’t. He did what he had to do to protect the king, and the princess was sent away to a temple, just as the king promised.
So still proves that he’s still clueless when it comes to Su’s feelings when he asks if the man she claimed to love before was actually Jung. Hah. She dispels that thought but fails to tell him who it was, and he doesn’t press the issue either.
She confronts him over what he “forgot” to tell her in the boat, knowing that he didn’t actually forget. In answer, he closes the distance between them as he says, “I love you.” Su smiles and closes the distance even further by leaning up to kiss him. “Next time, don’t forget it.”
So smiles, grabs her around the waist, and pulls her in. Holding her face, he leans in for a real kiss, which she finally accepts and reciprocates. Huzzah!
While Baek-ah just so happens to be thinking about Woo-hee, she magically appears before him. “Is this a dream?” he wonders, as Woo-hee admits that she’s thought of him during the time they’ve been apart. He pulls her into an embrace, happy to have her back.
Won arranges a meeting between Wook and Yo, who comes into the palace in disguise. Yo reveals that Wook was the one who ordered Won to use mercury in Damiwon, which is presumably why the king is currently ill, and commends his half-brother for being so coldhearted.
Cut to: Yo bringing an army to the gates of the palace to begin his revolt. (I know.) Jung prepares to go out to face his brother in order to protect the king, but his mother tells him to kill her first—she can’t bear to see her sons fighting against each other. Unless Jung wants to kill his own mother, he can’t leave.
From within the palace, Su and Chae-ryung have a non-reaction to hearing the sound of screaming outside. The king steps out of his bath coughing blood, and Chae-ryung hightails it out of there before Yo’s soldiers can arrive to drag Su away from the ailing king.
King Hyejong recognizes Yo when he struts into the room and begs for his life, but Yo coldly pries his hand away. Yo almost seems to pity his brother, but then he pushes him into the bath.
The king flounders as he drowns in what can only be three feet of water, but Yo just watches dispassionately. Su loses her ability to stand once the king goes still, floating face down in the water. He’s dead.
So and Astronomer Choi arrive too late to save him, but the sight of the king floating in the water fills So with murderous rage. He cuts through the remaining soldiers to reach the bath as Astronomer Choi goes into the water to retrieve the king. He cries for him to open his eyes again as the realization of his death hits him, causing everyone else to stop fighting.
Yo is quick to claim that he didn’t come here in full battle regalia to kill the king—he was already dying from the poison Su was putting in his bath. Su’s eyes widen at this, but Won throws her to the ground as he claims that mercury was discovered in the bathwater, and only she was allowed to administer to the king’s baths.
Yo gives So a choice: He can stay loyal to the dead king and die with Su, or join him and save her life. But he’ll keep Su’s crime of regicide in his back pocket should he ever need it, which seems to be his way of keeping So in check.
So strikes at Yo, and the two lock blades as So demands that he let Su go. Yo has Won hold a sword against Su’s neck as he tells So, “Wolves tend to devote themselves to one female until death. And you are the same as a beast. Choose. Is it Hae Su, or the dead king?”
COMMENTS
How is this even a viable choice So has to make? There are few things more annoying than villains providing an ultimatum by using the heroine as bait, but this whole situation is really something else. Considering that Yo’s been branded a traitor for storming the palace with an army to kill the man who was his father, how did he think this was going to work out? He doesn’t honestly think that he can storm the palace again and mystically claim that someone else committed regicide, can he?
The sad thing is, I think he does think that, and he’ll likely get away with it for no other reason than it being in the script. There’s no reason for the mercury plot to have existed at all if the king was going to die of drowning anyway—at that point, Yo could’ve just held him under those three inches of water until he stopped breathing. I can understand that the point was (maybe) to make Su seem culpable, but it’s not as though nobody saw Yo and his army come into the palace. It’d be different if Yo was just paying a friendly visit to his brother, but after being branded a traitor, who would honestly believe that Su was the one who would kill the king, as opposed to the guy who came back from the dead after trying to kill the last king?
Time skips are a given in sageuk when ground needs to be covered, but this is the second time Moon Lovers has been unable to use a time skip effectively—we get the illusion that time has passed, but nothing changes. We resumed exactly where we were before with the character relationships, leaving us to wonder if Su spent two years denying So’s advances, and why that only changed in the span of this single episode. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that nothing major happened offscreen (aside from Su getting a frankly insane promotion), but it only served to create a disconnect between what we thought we knew about these characters and what was actually happening before us.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, since I found Su and So’s honesty with each other to be quite refreshing, even if the circumstances surrounding their honest conversation were bizarre. We completely rushed through So’s marriage to a child, and though we understood his reasoning behind it, it’s hard to see what impact that had on the story when the king passed so quickly afterward. Also, was no one even remotely concerned about the king going absolutely mad? Was So not even a little suspicious that something horrible was going on behind the scenes to make his previously normal-seeming brother into a lunatic?
I guess we just have to take it on faith that everyone thought this progression of events was normal for the king, which would be easier to buy if we were dealing only with people from this time period. But Su, who could recognize illnesses with one glance and prescribe the perfect ye olde herbs to remedy them, has less of an excuse for standing idly by while the king’s condition went south. She knew he had eczema, which everyone else assumed was a life-threatening condition, but she’d know better than anybody that his skin condition wouldn’t cause madness. Or maybe she wouldn’t, and I’m giving her too much credit. Just throw us a bone, Su—we want to like you, but you’ve got to help us out a little.

Beanies...
I'm really scared. I'm really scared to watch So/Su's ship go burning down in tragic flames.
And I'm also scared that I might lack motivation and reason for living once this drama finishes. Kind of like the drama itself: lacking coherent reason and motivation in its characters.
;)
I've tried to fill the hole that is Wed-Sun with other LJG movies/dramas, but I don't think any compare to his work here. I think Wang So's character fits in so well with his talents and his passionate nature as an artist. I think WS gave LJG the breadth and depth he needs to express himself fully.

Honestly PG I'll be glad when this one's over because I've been overly obsessed with it and that's not a good thing. The last time this happened to me was Game of Thrones and I spent a year posting on that forum before coming to my senses! But I think, for you, it is LJG that is the draw, not solely the story like it is for me?
Anyway here's a hug for you, scaredy-cat: endings mean new beginnings! And we can always start a ML withdrawal support group on one of the open threads!

Hmmmm....what draws me to this drama, exactly? Honestly, I think it is a mixture of sageuk and LJG.
I grew up watching Chinese "sageuk", The Legend of the Condor Heroes being my favorite (from the 1980s). So, I have a certain BIG soft spot for all historical dramas.
Plus, ML:SHR, because it based off of BBJX, which is an excellent, and rich story, makes it compelling (even with all of the editing problems).
But, I would be a liar if I said LJG had nothing to do with it. He's just so charismatic, I can't take my eyes off of him, even when I tell myself I should. #thestruggleisreal
But, it can't be all him because I tried watching AATM, SWWTN, Iljimae and The King and the Clown...and I found most of them fairly unwatchable except The King and the Clown. That movie had such a great story and script; Gong Gil's character, like Wang So's, is really rich, compelling, multi-layered, and unpredictable...captivating!
What is it about ML:SHR's story that you find most captivating?
.....and where did Zoe go?! I've been trying to find posts from her to read!

Me too!! Huang Rong will always be my favourite Jin Yong female lead, though she did become a little iffy when she got much older in The Return of the Condor Heroes. She's smart, sassy, and though she's a little prickly, she also loves Guo Jing so much she'd do everything for him. Literally none of Jin Yong's other female leads has lived up to her. I haven't found another female character as awesome as Huang Rong is for a looong time, even in K-Dramaland.

Oh my gosh, I LOVED Huang Rong SO MUCH! Like, I wanted to BE her, she was so amazing! Ah, good memories.
@Barbrey - yes, can we please have a withdrawal symptoms support group for ML:SHR when it finally ends? *CRY*

PG, I don't want to get your hopes up but there is still a thread of hope for a happier ending.... Ji Mong said to So he didn't expect Yo would become King since he was only suppose to be a traitor, so a variable has changed...in time travel terms a variable changing can have a big ripple effect...the real question is what caused the change to allow Yo to become a King instead of stay true to his destiny of being a traitor only...and if one variable has already changed could others as well?.

@Maui - you have to admit with the pace of the episodes, they can't really go into Wang So's reign very much. Let's see...
Episode 16: Yo's reign of terror, So decides to become king
Episode 17: So must battle Yo
Episode 18: Yo maybe dies of illness, and then final showdown between So and Wook?
Episode 19: So becomes king, WS/HS disintegrate
Episode 20: HS dies and returns to 21st Century Korea, maybe being reunited with Wang So in reincarnated form?

@PG you're right about that....in the original c-version they don't spend a lot of time during 4th Prince's reign either...however, I got more than enough from the scenes they shared....much like I felt I saw what a reign under Mo would be like....it boils down to quality not quantity I think. No one can live forever...but maybe its about making the most of the time they have and for me having each character exit with dignity seems more important. Even Prince Mo mentions in the following episode that he wanted to spend time or at least be with those he cared about until the end, even if the end was short. I think he got his wish in Baekha's arms....I still think there's a sliver of hope for their happy ending, after all Soo exsists in both worlds her death is really a mere passage....

I vote for Arang ahead of Joseon Gunman! Better female lead, MUCH better chemistry (seriously Lee Jun-ki/Shin Mina is my favourite pairing ever involving oppa)
I mean, he's great in both and will make you cry but at least in Arang he's not the only one holding up the entire drama.

I feel you.
I literally have no life on Monday night-Tuesday-Wednesday because I'm too obsessed with this drama. I'd stream SBS (with my slow internet), read the live recap and comments on Soompi, then wait for the RAW to come out, watch it, lurk on Soompi again while trying to analyze the eps, and I keep doing it till morning. I would watch the engsub of both SBS and int version, read recap and comments on DB, and spend the whole day just like that. Thursday-Sunday I would lurk in DB and IG to see LJG's post and BTS.
I should be preparing for my upcoming job next month LOL I'm glad there are only 6 eps left because this addiction is not healthy, but I also don't know how to fill the holes once this drama ends. I think I'd spend a whole week binge watching the whole eps.
I won't even start watching LJG's other dramas; I may find no turning back then TT

Seriously my sleep cycles from Monday nights to Wednesday mornings are completely screwed because I watch the raw and then end up too excited to sleep while I wait for the subs and recap. And don't even ask what happened during premiere week, when we had TWO episodes on the first night and another the next.
I'm such a fool for this drama even though I hate it sometimes. What is this sorcery, seriously no other drama has done such a number on me.
And I literally can't see myself watching anything that's airing after it's done. I mean, how do you even, after you've been gutted and had your heart torn out?

After the drama is over, I am just hoping they release a 24-episode version that includes a very coherent and concise editing of the whole story.
This could have been such a hit (aside from the fact that LJK is slaying his role as always kyaaa) but I think the zoomed in approach by the directors cant be salvaged

The zoomed in approach bothers me the least of all the other things, so I'd love a 24 episode version with all scenes included for logical progression, all continuity problems resolved, good editing, pertinent voice overs where needed to bridge transitions, the stupid songs removed but the good score retained. Not much we can do about one or two of the actors, but they're bearable for the most part, the rest are solid and a few are great.

This is in the next episode, but a good example of how weird the cuts are for the show. There's a flashback to Jimong, CP, and Wang So as little kids, hanging out. We NEVER got the impression that CP and Jimong were life long friends (we got the hint that Jimong regarded CP highly). If this flashback had came BEFORE CP's death, then Jimong's crying would be so much more impactful. It's basic storytelling, you set things up to and THEN PAY THEM OFF! ugh, this isn't a writing issues, it's definitely a weird out of order editing issue.

I sort of felt that way when they were trying to introduce Wang So and Baek Ah's friendship. In episode 6 we see a scene where WS defends BA from WY's taunts. And then WS and BA become battle buddies (of a sort).
But, WS's hairstyle resembles his "wild" days before actually being allowed to stay in the palace (so, episodes 1-4). By episode 5, he had already transformed into a "prince". So, it looks like that scene was originally meant to be in episodes 3 or 4 somewhere. They removed it, but then realized they hadn't established the friendship that would be key in episodes 6-7...so they put it back in. Bad continuity. I have no eye of continuity, and even I saw it.

Oh yeah, absolutely agree. Why cut the scenes that lead to greater emotional impact and better understanding.
I want to know the name of the editor or editing company for this show. To avoid them in the future, and somebody should be complaining or firing them.

A thought:
WS comes to 21st century, watches scarlet heart Ryeo ..
Gets to know exact tropes of treason and who did what.. example, YH's attempt to poision Mu basically handcuffed Wook into becoming what he did.. etc etc..
Eclipse: He goes back to the time when he first entered the palace.. AND destroys the traitors upfrot.

I'm just sitting here thinking (worrying maybe?) that they're just gonna blow over the whole "Hae Su came from the future" thing for the rest of the show like it doesn't matter OR WORSE- that bs where she goes back and they Rooftop Prince us all.

If Su, or rather Ha Jin, returned to the future what would happen to her goryeo self? Is real Su dead? Would the real Su return and confuse all those around her with her personality change and memory loss?
Either way Wang So will be fucked.
If Su simply dies, then I hope that at the end of Gwangjong's reign when So dies he gets to eclipsey time travel and find his girl. I DESERVE A HAPPY ENDING AND SO DO THEY. Ugh he's such a soft soul I just want him to have a loving life....

I think we're supposed to take it that real Su is dead. Her body does die, according to Chae Ryung, and then she starts breathing again, presumably because Ha Jin has entered the body. So there's no Original Su floating around in the ether waiting for New Su to vacate her body.

I kinda think they are going to Rooftop Prince us (where he goes back but his reincarnated self meets up with the female lead? - I think that's what it was, right?). Su will go back to her 25 year old body in modern Korea, her body in Goryeo will die, Wang So will finish out his reign, spend a thousand years for his sins not meeting up with her, and then finally emerges to pull her out of the water in Korea. Or something like that. It really depends on how well they do it as to how well I'll accept it.

Yeah, but if they stick to the original, I understand that it is supposed to be a predestination paradox, or a causal loop. Su can't change her own past (the history of Goryeo) no matter how she tries, and in fact contributes to causing it to proceed exactly how it is laid out in history. So if the past can't be changed, then Wang So is going to go on to become Gwangjong and rule for 26 years ,long after Su has died, which I'm presuming will be when her body turns 25, her age in modern Korea - nine years older than 16 year old Hae Su's.
If she can change the past, then that's a whole different story but we've seen no indication she can.
That means that the closest to a happy ending we can get is if Wang So reincarnates but doesn't retain his memory of her though she retains hers of him.
The only way around that that I can see is if Wang So himself is caught up in the same predestination paradox. In other words, he's from the future himself, he just doesn't remember it because he entered the body of a small child rather than a teenager. So when he returns, he has all the memories of his long reign, including Su. Something like that. Very unlikely!

I have to say that this episode made me understand the low ratings in Korea. I so love this cast, I'm devoted to watching, the acting is superb, but either the script or editing have left such holes - when this episode started I really thought maybe I'd missed an episode, or slept through part of 13, which had shown something major in So and Soo relationship. They just suddenly seemed to have jumped from one level to another - she had been rejecting him all along - suddenly she is hurt that he might marry someone? And wouldn't her modern day attitude bring her to challenge him about his possible marriage to a child? The ease of their conversation, the seeming commitment seemed to come out of nowhere. His knowledge she's opposed to multiple marriages, (which we knew, but it had not Been part of a discussion with him, previously, I think).I agree that Yo storming the palace just to drown the king was ludicrous, though perhaps he thought he'd need to fight others. I'm not an expert on this. I'll keep watching, but this episode is testing me.

I think we can all agree that the two year jump didn't do much for the drama except give Hae Soo a solid promotion, give Yo a bedraggled look, give the new King poison, and give Wook the evil guyliner (which by the way looks great on the guy).
That wolf call out is so reminiscent of Scholar Who Walks the Night I thought I was watching that all over again. I mean that lone animal who trespassed an unmarried lady's quarter???
I have always loved seeing So in his carefree personality around Soo. I mean he's always serious and looks like he'll bite whenever he's around other characters. I love that the difference and shift between the edgy and relaxed interpretation of Lee Junki is so defined; and I feel like the intention is for the viewers to fall in love with the 'him' behind the atrocity looming in their empire. And this is exactly how Soo fell in love with him despite the violent Gwangjong she has seen.
I'm still crossing my fingers that he is not the bloody king this drama is foreshadowing.

Nothing will make me stop watching this drama to the end - though perhaps my other comment only pointed out the negative. Yes, so many obvious flaws, but you really fall in love with the characters, and get to see all sides - good, bad, and have to go past real feelings and decide to keep giving them a chance. I do wish the story telling had been handled better as the story and cast deserved so much better, and are giving their all! I am loyal and in love! As someone else said, I will suspend my disbelief and just follow rooting for the characters!

Heh, I disagree. I LOVE the instrumental music direction, which is nearly 80% of the show. The KPOP songs have to be worked in for the business proposition of the show. Yeah, it sucks, but I'm not gonna blame the dude for being forced to do his job by adding songs. You can BET that when the music is licensed to the drama, there's a caveat where a song has to be used an X amt of times. Don't hate him/her too much b/c when he/she does really well!

@Barbrey - that's because they don't.
SBS wouldn't be removing the kpop songs from their edit in multiple instances, if they actually had a contract dictating that it stayed in.

Yep. Music licensing is a weird beast too. Sometimes in America, the song licensed during the primetime run will not be licensed for a DVD or streaming release. So that's why Dawson's Creek (a teen show that REALLY popularized using pop songs as the soundtrack) doesn't have the same background music on Netflix that it did during it's air run.
I'm hoping if there's a DVD release, that all the pop songs get stripped out in favor of instrumental.

Oh, I'm aware of music licensing issues on tv shows - but every instance of those, from what I've seen, has been when pre-existing songs are used in shows that then license the music. (the closest example in Korea I guess would be the period-specific music used in the Answer Me series, they'd need specific permissions/licensing for that). And in such cases, the question isn't about mandated use, it's about the permission to use.
But I've never heard of mandated use in the case of OSTs specifically recorded for a particular drama and paid for by its production. It makes no sense for the artists or their companies to be able to dictate use after that, and that's never been the way it works in industries where recording OSTs for specific films/dramas is common.
I honestly believe the Scarlet Heart situation isn't be the work of anything other than an exceptionally lazy and incompetent music director who didn't bother to check whether they fit the drama they were featured in, and then SBS realising how bad it was and ordering the production to fix the music for the domestic market (since the international edit can't be fixed because of pre-production, footage and music is all locked in there).
pogo
October 11, 2016 at 3:18 PM
The instrumentals are lovely and really should have been used more, the kpop stuff is mostly shite and ruins/detracts from the mood of a scene so much, it's not even funny.
I don't buy the forced inclusion of the song X amounts of times by PPL contracts either, considering SBS has actually removed the kpop stuff from the OST multiple times in their edits. They wouldn't be able to do that if the inclusion was mandated.

Yeah if you really wanna drill down into how licensing can work, different markets will have different edicts on what is included as the final product. And whether we like it or not, the SBS product and the International product are 2 different things, and most likely sold differently.

October 11, 2016 at 4:24 PM
yeah but that's because the international version was sold as a pre-production, and can't be tampered with following censorship approval (which is how the unfortunate OSTs got to stay in). Not because the music companies hold any power over them.
SBS has more flexibility to alter their domestic series, especially after they realised how badly it f-cked up. (I honestly don't know how the first episode went on air at all, it really looked like no one from the network gave even a preliminary once-over to the most expensive drama on their budget)

Short comings of the editing and writing aside, Wang So is the sweetest adorkable hero ever. Yeah he sounded nothing like a wolf lol. His face when Baek Ah busted out Su's bday present was epic. So and Su really do interact like a couple married for a few years. They even resolve thier fights that way. And the kiss was everything it should have been. Thank the drama gods for that at least.
The contrast they made between So and Wook floored me. When So broke his "promise" to Su, he was even more upset then she was! And, in his eyes, there was no explanation to justify breaking his word to his woman. Swoon! That's a drama dream man right there. I know it's impossible but can we please get a SoSu wedding? Pretty please???? And if we can't get a happy ending can we have a Scarlet Heart 2 in modern times with the same cast? Not like the very odd Scarlet Heart 2 for the Chinese version where the show got rewritten 10 eps in -an honest to goodness reincarnated souls find each other again sequel. I think Kang Ha Neul is even better at playing a bad guy than a good guy (I wonder if he enjoys playing a baddie more, since it's so different from who he is). I found his cold eyes and heavy-lidded almost drowsy stare in this episode very chilling and malevolent. I hate that Wook masterminded the poisoning of Mu -- who was a very sympathetic character and was always really a kind hyung to Wook. The actor who plays Mu did an excellent job this ep showing Mu's decline into illness and madness, I felt so badly for Mu.
IU's acting is better when she's portraying serious, more mature and world-weary Soo.
I really missed Yeonhwa in this episode (I didn't see the SBS version).
It's hard to believe there's only 6 episodes left, I feel like the show just got into gear after episode 11 and there seems to be so much left still to cover.

Ahhh I am very sad I am always late to the party these days. Curse you real life and adult responsibilities, why can't I stay on vacation and devote excessive hours to MLSHR forever??
Having skimmed the many many comments (I love you guys!) I think I'm in the decided minority that loved the episode, and a lot of it has to do with the massive amount of relationship progression between WS and HS. There were moments of serious side eye and sighing, which I will get into later, but I have accepted those as part and parcel of the MLSHR experience at this point.
After all the angsting and questionable situations show has put these two through (-I hate it when I cannot fully enjoy a couple's first kisses guilt free) Su finally turned the tables on So and sneak attack kissed HIM for a change AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT OKAY, I am shamelessly thirsty for skinship between these two, and so easy to please. Honestly, I don't even need anything THAT serious, if show would give me multiple scenes of them just chilling by that lake and being their usual besties and now besties-with-benefits selves (I cry, I have waited so long!) I would be happy. I realize that wouldn't do much to advance the plot but did I mention I am easy to please??
I loved the BA-HS-WS birthday tea scene bahahaha the sass between WS and HS was strong in that one, and my darling, precious BA was in fine trolling form as he let HS know of hyung's (futile) efforts to find her a gift (-anyone else imagine WS terrorizing various shopkeepers and stalls looking for the perfect gift for HS and deciding nothing was good enough much to his frustration and their panic?) and made fun of WS for not being able to get it done while HIS own gift was so appreciated? And then his indulgent, knowing look as WS and HS had their usual prickly discourse-BA is the captain of the So-Su ship and no one can tell me otherwise. It does seem that So wasn't consistently in the palace though, to address Heads point that WS and HS relationship still seemed more or less at the same spot. It makes sense that one of WS's tasks would be ambassador still, so I'm going to go with that. It would be nice if the show could have given us a throwaway line about it though.
I literally LOLed at WS calling HS out by howling. Seriously, WS it's a good thing your rep as the scariest prince out there is iron clad at this point because if the populace knew what an adorable romantic you were, you would be fielding a ton more marriage offers. As it is that stargazing present was gold. WS is as thirsty as I am for kisses it seems, and now that HS isn't in panic attack mode, or freshly tortured (via vision or physical means) she's quick to deflect said sneak attack kisses. On a more serious note, I swooned approximately 10922 times at all WS's confessions in that scene and may or may not have been screaming at Su to "go to him" because her hearteyez for him were pretty much impossible to miss. And the...

...cinematography in that scene was stunning, like something out of a fairytale.
With that said, the lake scene was equally breathtaking. Say whatever else about the show, but it's filming locations for outdoor shots are always on point and always leave me with the impression that the director does have mad skills in framing shots or at least, fairly regular strokes of brilliance, because I couldn't look away. IU and LJK and the costuming dept. had a lot to do with it too, because the coordinating shades of blue costumes? Stop it you guys, I am dead, they looked so beautiful together. I even liked WS's flicked out bangs, I was giggling at the thought of him doing his hair esp. fancy for their date. Also quick side bar, did anyone else catch that the original plan was for them to go to the prayer tower?? And if that was supposed to be the original site of WS's love confession, WHAT ELSE GOES ON AT PRAYER TOWERS? Why was HS so affected to hear their destination? Back to the lake though...she wore his hairpin and you could have knocked him over with a feather when he saw that, because after all the times she rejected him, he can't even react the way he wants to, because he has just agreed to a marriage. I found that conversation on the water bittersweet, but liked that it somewhat turned the tables and that Su was the one waiting for So this time. I know it got resolved pretty quickly, but I think his having to wait 3 years for her to come to him kinda is balanced out by the fact that he had to get married by the time she did. No smooth waters for this ship, clearly-and this is me going lalalala to the inevitable tragedy around the corner here.
Rounding out the highlights of WS and HS interactions, their confrontation scene where they hashed it out about Jung and the wedding was cathartic and I was thanking the drama gods that the misunderstanding wasn't dragged out. They've agreed to be honest with each other, but with an out of giving each other permission to not talk about things they don't want to? Seems reasonable but we all know that's going to come back and kick their ass. With that said, can open communication and quickly resolving conflict become WS and HS's thing please? There are so many other things stacked up against this couple, being straightforward and not vague as WS wants, can only help them.
Also that mutual kiss was everything. Her smile at the confession. That awed expression on his face when she finally initiated a kiss? His signature waist grab move. The way he stroked her hair and then her cheek? How she couldn't look away from him? And then that slooow soul destroying way he leaned in before they finally kissed and how she finally, FINALLY embraced him back???? The only part I was not pleased about was that they zoomed out and made it harder to see the details of them making out. Apologies for the excessive detail here but...IT WAS 14 EPISODES IN THE MAKING DAMN IT, AND FOR THIS YOU DON'T HAVE A...

My take away from this episode:
- Hae Su is still an underdeveloped character. Come on, I wanna know more of her inner thoughts, of her life before being transported to Goryeo. I feel detached from her. But I still enjoy seeing her with So.
- Won is a very interesting character. You feel like he's just a filler but he's really well thought out, he's clever and cunning and, of course, smarmy, but he's working all the fronts possible, opening all the roads that could bring him the most personal gain. Really, a weasel, as someone earlier aptly called him.
- The most unnecessary relationship is Beak-ah and What's-Her-Face. It just doesn't make sense to me. How did they meet again? What's the deal with it? Why???
And I'm still hooked. Like, this show is my crack! I'm really enjoying it, even though there are times I have to roll my eyes.

Sigh....Hae Su is always going to be the other women. The married Wook romance line always bothered me and i was really hoping that they would apply the creative license to history here and avoid the niece marrying plot but here we go again. The marriage might be on paper but its a marriage still( even if Soo doesn't consider it as one) and to a child at that.
I'm actually surprised that Hae Su accepted it so gracefully. Has she realized and accepted now that polygamy is the way of the world during ancient times?!? I'm so much less excited for our OTP now. :(
