Lee Bo-young courted for tvN’s remake of Japanese drama Mother
by chickachunga
Ooh yes! Now this is one casting I can totally get behind. Surely, I’m not the only one who misses seeing Lee Bo-young (God’s Gift – 14 Days) in dramaland. Lee has been offered the titular role in tvN’s remake of the Japanese drama Mother, which tells the story of a woman who kidnaps a mistreated young girl and decides to become her mother. Well, I guess “mother” is more like it. Lee Bo-young has not made any confirmations at this time and is currently reviewing the script. She’s reportedly one of many A-list actresses that have been approached for this role.
The Korean remake of Mother will be written by Jung Seo-kyung, the scribe of film auteur Park Chan-wook’s films Thirst and this year’s much-buzzed-about erotic period piece The Handmaiden. This is Jung Seo-kyung’s first foray into writing dramas; the scripts of four episodes have already been completed, and now the preliminary stages of casting have begun.
tvN is no stranger to remakes with this year’s remake of CBS legal drama The Good Wife lauded as a major success (I concur!). They’re betting big and hoping for yet another hit with the upcoming remake of HBO series Entourage that will premiere on November 4. The last time tvN remade a Japanese drama was in 2014 with Liar Game, the sequel for which many fans are still pining for. The original Mother premiered in 2010 on Japanese broadcast network NTV and won numerous awards at the Tokyo Drama Awards that year.
Should Lee Bo-young confirm, she’ll go from playing a mother searching for her kidnapped daughter to playing a “mother” who kidnaps somebody else’s daughter. I can easily picture her rocking this role and would definitely tune in. She’s got fierceness in spades and is always a delight on screen. Her last drama came out in 2014 so I’m eagerly awaiting her return!
tvN’s Mother will premiere sometime in 2017.

oooh, this is exciting i loved her in God's Gift and she has always been an actress i liked alot. i need to go see the Japanese version now, the story feels like its going to be a lot more darker judging from the Japanese cover so i'm excited and i've seen both thirst and the handmaiden so i'm really excited to see if the writer can pull this off, drama are really different from movies in imo so its going to be interesting.

La Plume, it's originally a Japanese drama. But there is a Turkish version made.
I agree with u regarding Ji Sung choices of dramas, hopefully he will be in Defiant drama (the title was along those lines) rather than the other drama offered to him.

I remember hearing how good the Japanese version of this is, although I havent had the chance to check it out. I feel like LBY does justice to pretty much any role, so she'll be good with this too.

I don't think it sounds like Mother Gothel at all. You need to check out this beautiful but sad drama Mother. I loved it and cried rivers. She's not an antagonist just because she kidnaps the little girl, if you see, you'll know it (SPOILER! the litthe girl was abused by her mother, and later by her mother's boyfriend, so she saves the girl by kidnapping her and bring her a better life somewhere else, but of course, kidnapping doesn't come with a happy ending.) Check out this wonderful piece!

Aww, I just read the summary of the show, it sounds so sad! Now, I'm not so sure I want to watch it, I'm too afraid, I'll be bawling my eyes out.. I don't think my heart will take it, especially with the spoiler you gave me. ???
Sniff, I definitely can't compare this to Mother Gothel, but maybe a little like the teacher from Matilda, though Matilda was not being abused.
Aww, hope it is good. ~fingers crossed
Already sniffing..

Believe me when I say this, this drama (the original) is one of the most beautiful dramas ever made. The acting is superb and you feel like your skin is being ripped apart in every touching scene. I literally can't wait for the Korean version .-.

I really liked her in I Hear Your Voice. Alongside her prosecutor frenemy, they are the two reasons why I finished it (her lawyer friend was also great).
Though all, I wish Gong Hyo Jin could play a character like this. I would love to see her in a more dramatic role, thus breaking the sort of type-casting in romantic comedies or something. She is awesome and I love how different she is, it's impressive how she isn't a product of the industry even with these roles.
Han Chae Ah, Soo Ae (kind of hard since she is on about right now), Kim Min Jung (also impossible with Man To Man also happening around the same time) and Park Si Yeon (!!! I would love it too, really like her) would be all also great choices, alongside Lee Bo Young herself, of course.

Check out the trailer for Gong Hyo Jin''s new moving coming out called "Missing" I believe. Gong Hyo Jin plays a creepy babysitter/kidnapper.

Omg Mother (the original Japanese version) is so good and so sad! I hope they'll also find a good child actress to match LBY, because in the original, young Ashida Mana rocks the roll. It launched her career and landed her the lead role in the very popular Marumo no Okite, a rare occurrence for a child star. I hope (as usual), no overblown romance to deter the 'mother-daughter' combi and connection, and let's hope they'll do the original justice.

So true, the most remarkable thing from this show is ashida mana, the kid. I cried a lot when she ask whether she will fit in baby box. She is very very young in this drama with lot of rich expression.

This is the kind of drama where I'd like to see Yoo Jin & Anna dynamics play out.. not the ones we see in The K2.
And I'm glad Lee Bo Young will be back! Will it air at the same time as Defendant/Hong Gil Dong that courted Ji Sung?

I love the original so much (Sakamoto Yuji will always be my hero :XD) and can see LBY in the role, but also a bit worried since kdrama's record on drama adaptation has been quite dismal. I just hope they will make this one as memorable as the original. I wonder who will be cast for Ashida Mana's role? That for me is the real clincher.

at least it at tvn, i dont need to worried about the story to turn to romance type. Mother was a really memorable Jdrama. but the main highlight of Mother not the teacher but the kid. Ashida Mana really good in her role and one of the best child actress i ever seen. but since it is LBY, i believe that they will give more substance to the role of teacher, especially her relationship with her own mother and sister and also her turmoil with law when she discovered to kidnap the kid.

I LOVED Mother (and also Woman) but I'd hate to see a remake. I loved the series so much, I watched it probably 3x, and I never re-watch things. I have a lot of fears about a remake, because the pacing and mood of Hokkaido etc. are so imbued in the color of this drama.

I didn't like some of the recent Jdorama to Kdrama adaptations at all and Mother was such a great, absolutely fantastic dorama.
The cast, the writing, just everything.
Also Matsuyuki Yasuko is I think a much stronger actress then LBO, I would see her more as the biological mother part mainly because of her age. In the original Ono Machiko was great as the abusive mother.
There's no way they'll make it as dark and the ending (no spoilers) but it's not your typical sugary sweet ending that Kdramas like.
Plus Ashida Mana was spectacular in the role, it'll be hard to find a child actress like her.

kdramaland lacks scripts of any kind so they just pick good amount of stuff from japanese media. This year it has become much more apparent. What about all those writing competitions? Seriously, They lack talent so much that they need to copy most of their projects from a neighbour? Do something original.
I hate remakes because most of the time they destroy the charm of original show. Especially i don't have much trust in Kdramas to deal with mature and social issues.
They gonna Ruin the tears of all the viewers who have watched Mother.

If she is an A class actress, Mana Ashida (a child in japanese version) is a SSS class actress. Her acting, her role is veri superb.

I hope that this version will do honor to the original j-drama. It will be a very dauting task for the writer and the actors.
