Jang Hyuk up to chase a serial killer in OCN’s The Voice

You know, as soon as I saw that Jang Hyuk (Beautiful Mind) was up for OCN’s new crime thriller The Voice, I thought it would mean two very big changes for the drama—that it’d switch gears from being female-centric to male-centric, and that Bae Doo-na (Tunnel) would be out. I’m not at all upset about Jang Hyuk headlining a drama; I just don’t think anyone would cast him in a series where he wasn’t the main character. Sadly I was right about Bae Doo-na, because Jang Hyuk’s casting announcement came with the news that she’d quietly turned the project down.

The Voice is OCN’s next original series, about police officers who work at the 112 emergency call center and learn the true meaning of their jobs when they have to chase after a serial killer who begins to kill off their family members in gruesome ways. The series was originally described as a departure from OCN’s usual fare, with a focus on the female police officer at the center of the story. It remains to be seen whether the premise will change with Jang Hyuk’s casting, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. I’m sure Jang Hyuk will be great and perfect for a crime thriller, but I’ll feel let down if the female-centric drama we were promised gets swept under the rug.

Jang Hyuk is being courted to play a former star detective who gets demoted for using excessive force and transferred to a tiny precinct in a remote location. He suffers from tremendous guilt because he was unable to protect his family in an incident, leaving him devastated in the aftermath. It’s only after he joins the 112 emergency call center and faces off with a serial killer that the detective instincts he’d locked away are reawakened.

Directing is PD Kim Do-hyuk of the movie Shin Suk-ki Blues and the tvN body-swap drama I Love Lee Tae-ri, which are both comedies. I wonder how he’ll do with a dark crime thriller, especially one with a serial killer described as leaving behind ghastly crime scenes. Jang Hyuk is positively considering for now, and if he signs on, it’ll be his first-ever cable drama. Funny how a hardened detective with a weighty past seems like a cakewalk for Jang Hyuk. Guess he’s breaking into cable dramas on the right network then.

Casting continues for a new leading actress, and The Voice plans to air in 2017 on OCN.

I was looking forward to a female- centric thriller. I like Jang Hyuk and I hope he accepts the role but I am still a little disappointment that once again the males are taking over kdramaland. More good and important roles for actresses!!!!!!
But I hope they did not change the synopsis and both leads will be important to the story and both will have well developed characters.

I like it that they're making more and more female centric dramas of different genres. It's a positive change and I really hope women in dramas won't be just love interests anymore.

Yes I hope there are more female centric dramas and movies.

The audience is largest for male-centric dramas or with balanced male-female parts (like Titanic). The odds are so stacked for female-centric films and dramas that I applaud those whose work is unabashedly so.

Almost 80% of kdramas are female-centric in nature or female-centric in disguise. 2 episodes in and you come to know that Hero is driving force of the story. Females most important role in kdramas is do aegyo acts or create drama.

FRom title to trailers to Overly starnge and loud female characters. They are mostly use as Marketing. That's one of the reason Candy Girls annoy People.

Show's story is alright and since it is action based Jang Hyuk suits the Hero Position well.

Nobody is saying that Bae Doo-na has turned down the role because of Jang hyuk. Because they offered the role to Jang hyuk and Bae Doona is not in the cards anymore, everyone is thinking that they must changed their mind about a female centric drama. I still hope it is not the case.

Haha this actually sounds like the mother ship calling it's lost child back into it's folds. Jang Hyuk is perfect for an action/ thriller and OCN is the perfect channel for such shows. But, sigh, I was happy that they might try something female- centric for once. What I wouldn't have given for a kickass female lead. Shouldn't complain though, if this means I get to see Jang Hyuk in action so soon. (Can I start the vote for the female lead- Jang Nara- she was kickass enough in IRY and I want the jjang couple back on my screen)

lol yes that came to my mind also, another pairing of the Jangs and as you say Jang Nara was certainly kickass in IRY. She would almost if schedule allows her to of course, agree, not only acting again with Jang Hyuk but also a chance to show she can do more than com/rom in Korea. Despite the on going gag she a vampire, she is in her mid 30 and roles in com/rom are not going to last forever the closer she get to 40.

I'm not complaining to see Jang Hyuk back to dramaland, thriller with OCN at that. Just never do KBS drama again, oppa. ;)

However I hope there are more female centric drama in dramaland, we got some this year like Doctors (although i'm not really convinced this is actually female centric drama?), Flower In Prison, Woman With A Suitcase, Age of Youth, and Oh Hae Young (to name few, i cannot remember all). Hope to see female centric thriller because it could be different. The Village : Secret of Achiara last year had more potential if it is aired on cable, (I was convinced it was also female centric although sadly Moon Geun Young was underused).

Actually i'd like it if it were balanced- both male and female leads kick ass and awesome. Can't male and female leads be equally strong without one being obviously better/smarter/resourceful than the other?

I'm trying to think of a drama like that but nothing is coming to mind (maybe Suitcase will be?) Usually the female lead may start out strong and then kind of goes flat... so that is my wish for this drama- that it has equally awesome male and female leads, who can be good at different things and complement one another!

It will be great if both male and female leads equally kick ass and awesome. Usually what happened is sometimes they gave us strong female lead, but after the female lead fell in love with the hero, she becomes stupid. sigh Cindy & 4K is the best example. It always happen in romcom & romance melodrama.

Some of dramas that I love that both male and female leads are equally awesome from beginning until the end, to name very few - Empire of Gold, I Hear Your Voice, It's Okey It's Love

I agree! Instead of having a female-centric or male-centric, I prefer to have both. Maybe this show can take a leaf from The Good Wife - both female and male leads were equally strong, and nobody outshone one another. In that case, can they lure Jeon Do Yeon into dramaland again for The Voice?

The fault in on the production if this is true, because they still wanted Kim Rae Won. They should just casted the second male lead as main male lead so this drama can proceed with the original plan.

If I were Kim Rae Won as well, why should I be in a female centric drama and with the younger actress at that? ;) Of course I want to ask for alteration here and there. Other than that, I don't think the fault is on Kim Rae Won. He requested for changes but the bigger responsibility was on the writer and PD to adjust the script.

Lol I don't think jang hyuk's offer has anything to do with bae doona turning it down. Firstly she's more in hollywood now, and after doing projects like so many thrillers in that genre where it seems like she has already seen some success I thought it's a given that she won't be much interested in doing such a role in kdrama. Also yes for JH! I would be really happy if he does the role and can forget the bitter experiences that he had to suffer from Beautiful Mind. The story sure sounds interesting and I hope there would still be the bad ass female character in cards.

I actually think Jang Hyuk would have no issues taking the back seat if it does still pan out as a female-centric drama - in fact, it'd be fun to see him in a more beta male role.

He did many sageuk, so probably that's why you saw him in similar role. Not similar role, but same genre but different story.Of course he has his own style of acting, but every actor has their own style.

No he's not. Lee Dae Gil's character is tons of different when compared to Lee Gun or Lee Young-Oh. Even when comparing his characters on film his acting is not even the same. He may be over-the-top in acting sometimes but all his characters are different from each other.

I haven't seen him in anything except Thank You. His acting was very "actorly' compared to the naturalistic tone of the drama (a style I personally prefer) and yet he kind of fitted in if that makes any sense.

From what little I have seen I think he is called on to be Jang Hyuk in his roles because his style is quite distinctive and he brings a certain energy. Not everyone's cup of tea - some may prefer actors who disappear into a role - but I guess there is no one type of acting.

But I was finally going to see Bae Doo Na. Can't it still be the two? Previous reports made it seem like a male & female pair with the girl as the main character and minor, if any, romance happens.

Female main character who isn't boring please! Imo last one was Doctors, semi DotS but the best to date was Jang Nara in I Remember You. For a villain turn main character: Lee El would be a great choice! Liar Game & Wild Romance was lit.
