Baek Jin-hee courted to play lead in castaway drama Missing 9

And the Missing 9 casting saga continues. Because this drama has undergone so many changes (seriously, so many!), I guess it makes sense that even casting is still up in the air.

Missing 9 (formerly known as Picnic, formerly known as Gaia) went from being a tale about a group of idols stuck on an island in what sounded like Lost lite to a story about a washed-up k-pop star turned reporter (Jung Kyung-ho) and his stylist who have to fend for themselves after their plane crashes. The change in narrative occurred as a result of the scribe switcheroo when the Angry Mom writer was replaced with the more seasoned writer of Police Unit 38. EXO’s Chanyeol and Lee Sun-bin (Police Unit 38) have withstood all the project changes thus far and have confirmed supporting roles in Missing 9.

Actress Jung Yumi (Discovery of Romance, Train to Busan) received the offer to play Jung Kyung-ho’s stylist and love interest, but now it appears that she wasn’t the only one in the running for that role. She likely is no longer the frontrunner since another name has entered the mix; now Baek Jin-hee (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol) is reportedly considering the female lead role, the character named Ra Bong-hee.

If Baek Jin-hee confirms, this would be her first drama project in a year. My ears perked up when I heard Jung Yumi might be starring opposite Jung Kyung-ho — I love both Jungs! — but I guess we’ll only have one Jung this time around, which is better than none.

SM C&C-produced Missing 9 is being considered at MBC and is expected to air in early 2017.

Baek is lovely. BUT. BUT. The Jungs! Aight MBC, stop casting people and start shooting already before we lose more of the good ones.

This drama is a plane crash itself. I'd say Jung Kyung Ho, please miss this flight before it's too late.

I like Baek Jin-hee - she's one of those workhorse actresses that people don't really seem to buzz about here, but seeing her makes me think of jb and gf discussing actresses who can make you care about Candy characters in the last podcast, and BJH is one younger-gen actress who actually does manage to breathe a little life into those tropey old stock types like she did in Triangle.

The buzz sort of died down because of My Daughter is Geum Sa-wol. I quite liked BJH as an actress and I watched the drama for her. And well, it was so so so bad. I think the Geum Sa-wol outing may be one of the decisions she'll come to regret (perhaps already regretting). Female centric family drama v.s. a supporting role in SFD... Who knew that GSW would be such a trainwreck?

I ended up watched GSW for veterans. I cannot blame BJH totally on her decision, because who knows it will be a disaster, and the writer's prior project Jang Bori is Here was quite good. Oh Yeon Seo started to get more recognition and leading roles after the success of that drama. Quite unfortunate for BJH, because it is not the same case for her.

I just wondered where she is, so I hope she confirms this.

I steered clear of it but I heard about how messy it got, and it's a shame because BJH ends up taking the fall for her character turning out to be annoying.

I really wish she'd just taken SFD when she was offered too, Shin Se-kyung did well in that role but like I said, Baek Jin-hee just brings MORE.

The blame should totally be on the writer. I stuck to it because of BJH, even though her character was really frustrating. However, one can tell that BJH tried to give the character a little bit of life. Unfortunately, one can only do so much with what little she's given. International audience can call it a trainwreck; but at the end of the day, the ratings were pretty sturdy. It was 30+% (though one can't really solely attribute that to her). still, it's still not bad to have a #1 weekend drama on one's resume.

Song Ha Yoon did outshine Baek Jin Hee though. but what can BJH do when the scriptwriter gave the other role a better character!

Agreed. Much as I love Jung Yumi, I'd probably rather watch Baek Jin-hee here. This might end up being a disaster, but a chance to see Baek Jin-hee in a prime time drama with a great costar? Yes, please.

I agree with you. Her role in Empress Ki is still my all time favourite. Geez! She was awesome as Tanashiri. She was the villian, I couldn't help but fall for her character.

I really want to see her in a drama again. And the drama, My daughter Geum sa-wol NEVER HAPPENED.

She even said, she wants to be Tanashiri again. She probably needs to do villain one more time.

Yeah, she has the uncanny ability to make the potentially bland, interesting. I hope she's not wasted here.

I wouldn't mind. Baek Jin Hee is good with me, too.
I did skip her last drama since I've never read a good thing about it; so I hope she picks something good for her next project whether it be this or something else.

I do wonder what could have been if she opted to be in Six Flying Dragons, though. I'm sure her presence would have made the drama even more engaging. I like Shin Se Kyung a bunch despite her limitations but I remember being super excited when there was news Baek Jin Hee was considering that role.

The thing with SDF is though that the writers have said multiple times that they wanted Shin Se Kyung as their first choice and Baek Jin Hee was only considered during that time when SSK was still filming Girl Who Sees Smells and couldn't review the script. Their offer to BJH fizzled once SSK read the script and agreed to be onboard.

Feels like I've read that before.
Anyway, I've no problem with outcome that happened. I just wonder about Baek Jin Hee and what she could have done in the role.

Can they pick a different drama instead? Missing 9 feels like a potential bomb - not the good kind that turns out to be a blockbuster, but the bad, terrible kind that turns out to be a flop. I hope I'm wrong. For the sake of these talented actors, I hope I'm wrong.
