Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Happy weekend! Team Dramabeans here, checking in with our updates on the good, the bad, and the WTF of this past week. Does anyone else need a hug or a stiff drink to wash it down? Maybe the Chuseok holiday meant time away from dramas for some of you, or maybe you just watched more dramas with your family, like me. Hey, I had to inherit it from somewhere. Tell us what you’ve been watching, and what shiny new shows have caught your eye around the bend! –girlfriday

Fantastic: I am so loving the Ji-soo and Park Shi-yeon relationship that I am super bummed that it may not get a chance to develop. Of course his health is more important than a drama; it’s just an extra crying shame because it’s poised to be so adorable, and if she doesn’t get to explore the relationship with the adoring admirer, I don’t know how her story of growth and healing will get to play out. At the least the leading couple’s romance is cute and funny, and I can’t wait for them to get past their misunderstandings. I can’t decide if I want Joo Sang-wook to learn how to act, though, or to be an epic foot-actor through and through.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I didn’t mind (that much) this director’s inexplicable love of extreme close-ups in his previous dramas, but it’s so distracting here that it actually angers me. That said, the ONE time I found it stunningly effective was when So insisted Su look him straight in the scarred eye, which did make my heart skip a beat. And while I find the story flow okay within individual episodes, I sure wish there were more flow over the series as a whole. It feels like we’re catching scattered episodes in the time-traveler lady’s life, not one thrilling story about the overall experience.

Drinking Solo: This week the show really won me over, and made me warm to every character more, especially Ha Suk-jin and Gong Myung. The student trio of fools gives the comedy a quirky, eccentric vibe, and I’m liking how this show focuses less on the eating and drinking than the Let’s Eat franchise and just uses it as a recurring motif, rather than super-long interruptions of food porn.

W–Two Worlds: When I’d asked for a happy ending to the drama, I should have been more specific about happy including satisfying. My high opinion of the show in its first half was based on the anticipation of getting (hopefully cool, mind-blowing) answers, but once we didn’t get them, my opinion of the earlier parts retroactively gets lowered. My main problem with the show is that it was so full of tricks designed to fool me in the present in order to pay off a future twist that I stopped trusting where the writer was taking me. I knew I was being toyed with, so I stopped buying into the world and accepting the rules, because I knew they would just be invalidated by newer ones. All that said, as a whole I still think W is a pretty damn cool show. And now that it’s over, maybe people (ahem, Korean media) can stop using the word “context” without context.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: *contented sigh* I’m just going to live here in my Moonlight bubble happy place and pretend the rest of the week didn’t happen.

Cinderella and the Four Knights: Is there any way to send Sohn Na-eun’s character to fashion school on a different continent? She’s putting a damper on my cotton candy fluff, and this show is not one to hold up well under any dampening, of any kind whatsoever.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I always reach for this show right away, but at the end of every hour, I’m dissatisfied. I don’t know why I keep going back expecting a different result. It’s like the definition of futile; and yet, there I am each time, in the hopes that Lee Jun-ki will get something important to do.

Jealousy Incarnate: Well, finally. This show certainly takes its time getting anywhere, but the slow unraveling of Jo Jung-seok’s true feelings was worth the wait. Now that we’re here in mixed-up-feelings romanceland, you’ve got me.

Drinking Solo: Oh no, I actually like Park Ha-sun with both brothers! I can actually feel myself getting on the wrong ship, but I can’t seem to stop myself. Noona romances will be the death of me.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Having dropped W and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, the only show I’ve been keeping up with is Moon Lovers. This week, episode 6 felt oddly out of place and sorely lacking in Lee Jun-ki. Episode 7 was much better with lots of cute moments and more screentime for Jun-ki and all the other princes. Generally speaking, the show is quite pretty (characters and all), but sometimes I’ll come across some puzzling edits, jarring cuts, and nonsensical compositions. For instance, when IU was reluctantly watering the shrubs, there was an extra long beat before Lee Jun-ki emerged and groaned about getting wet. And before his head popped up, the entire shot was distractingly out of focus. I’m aware as to why it was out of focus (the focus had to be wracked on Jun-ki), but the shot was framed so poorly and took me out of the scene. I hope the show finds its groove soon, but if it doesn’t, well, at least there’s top-grade eye candy.

tineybeanie

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Solid, happy fluffy drama. I enjoy every minute Kwak Do-yeon and Park Bo-gum come onscreen. Surprisingly, I actually like the second lead female character, which is always a win.

Our Gap-soon: About to give this one up. Nooo! The cast had so much potential. It’s Lee Wan’s first project since forever, and the So-rim couple reunion. So I’m super bummed that the plot is so muddled.

W—Two Worlds: Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve begun to see the actor playing Yeon-joo’s father everywhere. I thought had never seen him in anything before W. But after a chill k-movie marathon weekend, I just realized he’s been in some of my favorite recent Korean films, in all types of genres from The Face Reader to Train to Busan.

Fantastic: Joo Sang-wook does jealousy nearly as well as Jo Jung-seok does. It’s so cute that I wanna squee, but Park Shi-yeon and Ji-soo’s scenes were the ones that really captured my interest in last week’s episodes. He’s perhaps my all-time favorite noona-romancer, with Park Seo-joon coming in as a close second. So it was that much harder to hear about the news of his illness.

chocolatte

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: This drama went from fluffy cute to genuinely moving within a span of several episodes, and I am completely smitten by it all. Park Bo-gum continues to be magic in every episode (he smiles, and I’m blinded temporarily) but I find the rest of the cast to have just as much heart, and I’m fully invested in what happens to each of them.

W—Two Worlds: It’s not often that I watch a show solely to see what happens next, without being emotionally invested in the characters, especially the main couple. But that’s what happened for me with W — and with the last few episodes being no match for the ridiculously thrilling first few, I walked away from show thinking, “huh,” and that was it. I’ve always been a fan of Lee Jong-seok’s and still am after his performance here, but I hope that I’m able to connect more to the characters in his next project in dramaland, whenever that may be.

Jealousy Incarnate: I’m behind on this week’s episodes, but I’m enjoying the quirky humor and the chemistry between our three leads. Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok are as sparkling as ever (albeit in very different ways), and after a slow start, Go Kyung-pyo is really coming into his own in this role. I do find the show to be plodding at times, but the unexpected laughs and genuine character moments more than make up for it.

Marriage, Not Dating: I’ve been meaning to pick this up for a while now, and I finally got around to finishing a decent chunk of it these past few weeks. The second leads don’t do anything for me, but the main couple is pretty much everything I ever want in a romantic comedy. So far, I’m sold.

SailorJumun

Fantastic: I didn’t think Ji-soo could possibly get any cuter, but he certainly proved me wrong as the lovable, bumbling attorney Sang-wook. His endearing (albeit somewhat naïve) positivity is downright contagious; it’s no wonder Sul couldn’t stop laughing at the guy. I’ll admit that I’m sad the noona-dongsaeng loveline might get shelved due to recent news, but I’d much rather have a happy, healthy Ji-soo than a character in a show. I’m wishing you a full recovery, Oppa.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Is cutie Crown Prince out to get me? Why is he continually trying to kill me with every episode? You should take it easy with the teary-eyed smiles, Yeong – I want to live to see the rest of the show.

W—Two Worlds: Oy… Where the hell do I start? This might be the most complicated relationship I’ve had with a drama since Doctor Stranger (the denial I had with the downfall of that show was so strong, you don’t even know). I think we can all agree W wins as the superior by a landslide, but I feel like the disappointment with the second half of W hurts just as much, if not worse. Because, UGH, the first half was perfect. I almost wish it could’ve ended with episode 7, but I wouldn’t go as far to say I didn’t enjoy the drama as a whole. I still think the whole concept was remarkably innovative and genius on writer Song Jae-jung’s part, and the way she played with the meta was so freaking cool to watch. Plus, I was always invested in our story with Yeon-joo and Kang Chul, even with the tangled mess of rules. Since I loved the couple so much, I’m (sort of) willing to let go of all our unanswered questions. I’m content with the bittersweet ending and in knowing that after all they’ve been through, they can now live out their lives together, no longer held back by any rules. And meanwhile, I’ll be here. Welcoming the post-W depression.

Laica

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Much squeeing was heard around these parts this week, and this viewer was no exception. Not only are the music, the visuals, and the acting all executed so well that I feel my heart fluttering like a teenager’s again, I love how this show makes an old trope new. Let’s face it, we’ve seen the crossdressing romance done, and done well, before. But this drama mines all the angst and the tension, and gives us the swoony satisfaction that we crave, while still managing to give us a new dynamic between hero and heroine. I love the way the sageuk setting both raises some stakes and makes others irrelevant, while the youth of the main characters gives us that heightened emotional feeling that is underscored even more by the nature of life in the inner palace. Like Ra-on and Yeong seem to only see each other, I can only see the two of them. Second leads? What second leads?

Jealousy Incarnate: Seo Sook-hyang is one of my favorite drama writers, and in her usual style, this show dropped us in the middle of a story full of characters living rich, interesting lives, and is now letting us organically get to know them. I love the three main characters so much, but especially Na-ri and Hwa-shin. Their hilarious antics have me in stitches almost all episode long, except when they suddenly have these incredibly vulnerable moments that make the bottom suddenly drop out of my heart. I love the way this drama portrays the absurdity that often accompanies tragedy, and the way laughter and pain are so often two sides of the same coin. That’s a way more accurate portrayal of how one deals with the hard things in life than the usual wailing and chest-beating. (Also, best use of “Wrongful Encounter” in a drama ever.) My only complaint is, I want Na-ri to end up with both guys in alternate universes. Or at least for this Epic Bromance to last forever. The foreshadowing fairy be damned.

Gosh, what can I say about Moonlight that hasn't been mentioned here? ..... It's truly a delight.

Just started watching Jealousy Incarnate because Gong Hyo-jin can never be missed. ...... I've only watched two eps and so far, so good.

I also just started W. While it appears innovative, which is exciting, I'm kind of unsure about it. We'll see.

Happy drama-viewing everyone!

Too many oppas, too little time!

I'm patiently waiting for Scarlet Heart, I find my self rewatching some episodes in a week, i love the intensity and get curious on how the romance between So&Soo would bloom. Not really mind the so-called weird editing and choice of music, I oddly enjoy every aspect of the drama. I guess it's different strokes for different folks. My heart aches for So this week, but LJK & Haneul are totally mesmerizing in every way possible.

Can not make my self to watch Moonlight, I love Bogummie, but I'd have save it for later.

Loving the quirky Jealousy Incarnate, Gong Hyo Jin is love. She gives the friendly neighbor eonni kinda vibe, so relatable and honest. JJS already had me since Lee Sun Shin days, so basically i adore both leads.

Ahh..monday seems to be aeons away :((

@ tinybeanie I totally had the same reaction. I thought that I never saw Kim Eui Song before when in reality, I watched several of the films that he starred in.

I was especially shocked to find out that he played the executive in Train to Busan. The way I found was that I saw a picture of the Train to Busan cast thanking the audience after Train to Busan hit a major milestone and lo and behold, there was a man who looked exactly like Oh Sung Moo. I was confused and went to check the cast list of Train to Busan and found out they were the same person! :O

I am in love with Moonlight drawn.....it must be Kim Yoo-jung's bright as sunshine vibe or Park Bo-gum's oscillating character from vulnerable to strength and back or it could be clothes. I am not sure, but here I am waiting like a lovesick puppy.

And Moonlovers, all the beautiful people seem to have congregated in this ONE drama. I wish it had a better story continuity.

Oh dear. I've been so busy and, once again, could not comment much at all this week. I only kept up with Moonlight & Moon Lovers and finished up W. I'm also enjoying Jealousy Incarnate, FantastiC, and Drinking Solo, but am behind on this week's episodes. I'll probably catch up after this if I don't just end up watching scenes from Moonlight. Again and again and again.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds- I can't get over what a surprise this drama is for me. I mean, of all the dramas airing, I probably kept my expectations the lowest for this one, if only because youth sageuks are so hard to pull off with finesse. But, here I am, giggling like an idiot because of how much I adore it.

Part of the reason why I had no time to comment? Because, even after I was done with work, I just wanted to go watch this again from the first episode to make sure I really loved it as much as I thought I did. And I after I did that, I skim-watched it all over again just for our OTP.

The instrumentals in this show are gorgeous, by the way, and set the mood so perfectly in every scene. And Park Bo-gum's Lee Yeong continues to just be awesome in ways that have me trying to figure out the last time I've fallen this hard for a male lead. That tearful smile at the end of episode 8 completely unravelled me. I've pretty much rearranged my schedule next week just so that I'll have time to comment on the recaps next week.

Moon Lovers- I'm honestly just sitting back and enjoying this one without over-analyzing it. And that makes it a pretty satisfying watch, even though I'm really not exactly sure what story it's trying to tell over the course of it's 16 episodes. The end of episode 7 has me pumped for what happens next with Jun-ki and IU. I'm content with being invested in the journeys of these characters, even if the drama is faltering on the whole.

W- I honestly don't know what to say about this one. I was really moved my Dad's sacrifice at the end, even though I saw it coming a few weeks back. And, on the whole, I think I was more satisfied with the resolution than most, but something about this drama just didn't come together at the end. Such a shame, considering how well-defined it seemed at the beginning. I still really appreciate it for the fascination it inspired at it's height and credit the writer for doing a lot of amazing things with the material, even if she ultimately lost a bit of control on her narrative.

Chocolatte, I just finished Marriage, Not Dating this past weekend! I still can't get over how awesome the show was. The second leads were just ugh but the main couple is what sold me on the show! They were just magic. And I felt completely at home with Ki-tae. He was me in male form.

I really want to watch it again now. lol

MnD is one of those dramas that I just keep coming back to. Literally, whenever I'm down. That's my go-to show. I'll probably never get over how much I adore Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo together in every single episode of this gem of a drama. My hilarious, unforgettable scene-makers :)

MND (and its OST) is a favorite revisit for me as well. I've come to feel that the most important third character is Ki Tae's Mom, the second and third leads are pretty irrelevant. But our couples relationship/s with his Mom are everything.

I may or may not have binged on a LOT of episodes this weekend... it gets so good! I'm at the point where I want to see what the end game is for Gi-tae and Jang-mi, but I also don't want it to end, period. Can't believe I missed out on this show when it was first airing.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo - despite the flaws (directing, editing, storyline flow, etc.) - it has my heart solely because of Lee Jun-Ki, Kang Ha-Neul, and IU.

Drinking Solo - glad I kept watching and didn't drop it. Looking forward to the next episodes.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds - on paper and execution wise its perfect but something happened to my excitement for it around episode 5. I enjoy watching MDBC but I have to force myself to watch an episode.

W–Two Worlds - most definitely I was ready for an ending that lived up to the excitement of the beginning episodes. Didn't happen but I'm satisfied with the ending. Afterall, it could have been worse and joined the club of all the other dramas with WTF endings. It's enough of those already!

Jealousy Incarnate - another case of enjoying it when I watch it but I have to force/remind myself to watch an episode.

Fantastic - stuck with it hoping for a payoff. Still warming up to it.

UF - next ep 9. I'm loving the angst. I think I'll finish to see the performances and situations leading up to the spoiler.
Im Joo Hwan & Kim Woo Bin are bring it though.

W2W - completed. Idk what to say about this drama. I loved it so much.

TF38 – done. It was awesome. SIG is coming back to my screen soon!

C&4K - on ep 9. I don't know if I care about a ship anymore. Just let Bodyguard and Seo Woo/Ja Young be happy.

JI - next ep 6.
LiM - on ep 7, squeal.
Full House - next ep 2.
FantastiC - next ep 4.

Drinking Solo - next ep 5, it really isn't about drinking
The youth trio is the best! I can't believe Gong Myung did the "deedoodee". I ship Ki Bum & pretty girl, Ha Na & Jin Sang
But seriously Gong Myung needs to be a 2nd lead stat. He's my fav member of 5urprise at the moment.
The OST at the end is pretty. I'm sad ep 4 didn't end with a "reason I drink solo"

I found W's overall series to be enjoyable to watch, but was equally frustrated with the lack of answers in the final episodes. There was just so much potential to be eeked out from what the writer hinted at that I think for once the series might have benefited from an extension, at the very least, perhaps an online webtoon version that touches on more of the make up and mystery of both universes?

I have within the last few months gotten my thirteen year old daughter and sixteen year old niece into watching K-Drama's.. My son is still too young to appreciate subtitled programming, but I sometimes get hints of his interest when a particularly good swashbuckling saguek scene comes up on my screen. My daughter however enjoys a lot of the genres I do, and so she's gotten into W as well, but I've .. uhm, well, I'll say I pre-watched the episodes before she was able to, and in my defense, all to smooth out the edges and inevitable questions that come up when we can't explain the 'rules' of the game. It's been enjoyable otherwise.

I had high hopes for Moon Lovers, and I still think from a production stand point it has all stars.. but the editing and continuous close ups have really eaten up a lot of focus from the actual story line. For instance, one minute we're looking at Soo bandage the 10th prince's fingers for no particular reason, the next we see So topple a basin with paper ships and begins to talk -- but WHAT did he say? What was the conclusion of that scene? What did we take away from it? Was the teacher impressed or did he disregard So's interpretation? What was the point of the scene of bandaging 10th princes fingers? What relevance can I take from these kinds of scenes other than an inferred meaning which can differ from one viewer to the next? It made no sense! I'd like to personally put the PD into a time out until stops making the scenes stutter so horribly and learns how to properly string the story along so as to not completely undermine the obvious amount of work put into these scenes.

i only skimmed the first 2 episodes of moon lovers, but i've been hearing so much negative stuff about it that i'm curious to check it out for myself. i'd probably still be skimming it already if it weren't for IU, whom i've grown to actively dislike. poor lee jun-ki. he's not a brilliant actor, but he certainly doesn't deserve a drama as bad as people are making this one out to be.

W's ending was disappointing. a happy ending, but a lot of loose threads and questions, and no proper wrap-up for anyone else. (so-hee, do-yoon, su-bong, etc.)

another lull in dramas for me. i'm liking jealousy incarnate a bit better, though i keep finding the tone a bit unusual/odd. there are scenes sometimes where i can't tell if it's meant to come across hilarious or serious. it feels a bit different from most dramas, that's for sure.

cinderella and the four knights- still my guilty pleasure, though i hope we wade out of this angst territory quickly. the show is at its best when it's being cute and light.

but mostly, i've been focusing on older dramas. it started with rewatching save the last dance for me (still not done), and somehow i ended up song hye-kyo's wiki page. turns out there were a few dramas i'd never known she'd done before. i started watching the sunlight pours down, a 2004 16-episoder she did after all in, but before full house. i thought i knew every single drama SHK had done since autumn fairytale, but there were a couple sprinkled in there that i'd never known. i've been watching her since i was a kid when she was on soonpoong clinic (amazing, legendary sitcom—even the original high kick doesn't hold a candle to it), so i'll always tune into anything she does.

that said, when are we going to get a really good sitcom in dramaland?! i'm really hankering for one. sometimes i end up watching old youtube episodes of soonpoong clinic, three guys and three girls, high kick #1, and kimchi cheese smile (love this one) and i really love the format. it's often cheesy, but when done well, there's nothing like it. you get more attached to the characters and you get to witness their growth. the endings hurt more too. i'm still trying to find the ending for soonpoong clinic—never saw it, though i read about the ending.

in a very nostalgic mood lately.

The last four episodes of Jealousy Incarnate have been so much fun. I actually almost dropped this drama after two episodes in because I couldn't stand the female characters. Pyo Nari included. After four episodes, can I say that I love Pyo Nari now and she's seriously my favorite Gong Hyo Jin character ever? Sooooo charming and funny. So many swoon-worthy moments in episode 8. If I could change one thing in this drama right now, I would like to please show less of that teenaged girl. I detest the childish way her mouth moves when she talks. Gosh, her acting is so cringe!

Moon Lovers
Our Gap Soon
Fantastic
Cinderella and Four Knights
W
Second First Time Love
Drinking Solo

I don't know if I will continue with them all, but this is my list for now. I thought things would slow down when I finished Live O2O, Uncontrollably Fond, and Bring It On Ghost, but it always seems there is another to take its place.

So many dramas to watch!

I'm not used to watching so many sageuks (even fusion ones), so I get a bit confused from time to time between the secondary characters in Moonlight, Moon Lovers and Flower in Prison! Or maybe it's due to the W effect of multiple dramaverses colliding and reshaping themselves, in conjunction with the tidal effect of Moon Days ... all in all, my present reality is a little fuzzy and sleep-deprived!

W: Two Worlds: Special Episode 17 did a summary of the main story points, some behind the scenes of cast & crew, and of course, some NG scenes. Loved seeing how the special effects were done and how the manhwa team made LJS into a RL cartoon hero. The filming conditions looked like Running Man, Real Men and Law of the Jungle rolled into one.

My thoughts after watching the Special: I need a compilation of Han Hyo Joo dancing videos, but other than that, I can now let go of W and thank the show for one of the sweetest K-drama couples created (meaning YJ & KC 1.0), for truly creating magic, and a whole new genre we've never seen before!

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds: if PBG gets to be happy, I'm happy! Yay for the return of bromance! I'm excited for Hong Sang Nom/Ra On's secret identity plot - the ace card has been under their noses all along! In many ways, this is even better than finding out that you're a hidden princess or something.

Scarlet Heart: still watching, still liking. For once, I have no problems shipping both ships - I mentioned elsewhere that I see it playing out more like Tolstoy's War and Peace, in that the characters naturally grow and change over a period of time, and it's not a case of one or the other. Still glad that So seems to be awakening to his feelings first, though!

C4K: on the verge of dropping. Did HM have a lobotomy? Dunno what Housekeeper Ahjumma's tactics are for giving HW a boost, but I'm not sure I like them. Need Secretary Lee & HW moments back.

Drinking Solo: definitely growing on me. It's becoming my non-sageuk pick-me-up, along with Jealousy Incarnate. Look forward to the hijinks between the two brother and No Geu Rae.

Jealousy Incarnate: my current favourite. I'm pretty sure no explanation's needed!

Fantastic: the petty bickering and posturing is hugely entertaining (the 2 guys trying to out-text each other), but I'm looking forward to them coming clean about her illness, and how they deal with it. Love it when the Three Musketeer Unnies are together! Was really looking forward to Ji Soo's noona romance, but health comes first!! I hope they give him a complete rest before his next project. Puppy, fighting!!
