Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 9

Just when you thought the prince couldn’t get any swoonier, there he goes, being more swoony. And who can resist all his heartfelt expressions of care and his unwillingness to let an impossible situation defeat him? Which is a character trait that’ll surely come in handy, what with all the vipers and backstabbers littering the palace. Lucky for him, he’s managed to outsmart them pretty successfully… for now.

EPISODE 9: “The moment the heart’s latch is opened”

Yeong makes his full confession to Ra-on, giving her one of the eternity bracelets and calling her the woman he loves. Stunned, she asks, “You… knew?”

He confirms it, and she asks if he’d known back in the garden, when he kissed her. He nods. Ra-on asks, hurt, “Knowing it all, were you mocking me?” His face falls; that wasn’t what he’d meant at all.

Byung-yeon has just discovered her true identity as well, having heard from her adoptive father that the rebel leader’s lost daughter Ra-on is the Hong Sam-nom who is now at the palace. He rushes back to the palace, full of purpose.

Yeong apologizes, adding, “But I have never thought of you lightly. At first I was shocked, and then I was joyful. And after that, I could not speak.” He smiles down at her, continuing, “When I sat comfortably in a palanquin, you walked, and when I walked, you had to carry an umbrella. While I sat on silk and you sat on a dirt-stained seat, how could I say that I treasured you as a woman?”

Ra-on takes a step backward, face averted, and says that it was all part of her duty as a eunuch. Yeong takes her hand, saying, “But that is not is something a man should do to his beloved.”

At that, she looks up, and he clasps her hand in both of his. He vows to treat her as the most precious lady in the world: “I’ll block the wind, and cover you from the sun, and cherish you. May I do that?”

Overcome with emotion, she cries as he wipes the tears gently from her face. And as they stand there looking at each other ardently, around the corner, Byung-yeon stares in shock, then quietly slips away.

But Ra-on moves slightly away from Yeong’s touch, and his face takes on a look of worry. She looks him in the eye and replies, “Yes, I am a woman. But I have never lived as a woman.”

He tells her she can start now. But she shakes her head, telling him, “In a place I should not be, I did something I must not do. I’m sorry. I will not cause any more harm for you—”

He cuts her off, saying he doesn’t blame her: “I blame myself, for not recognizing you sooner.” But Ra-on doesn’t let him say more, and excuses herself to return to her duties.

She steps outside and stares at the bracelet, thinking of his declaration to treasure her as a woman, while Yeong remains standing inside, replaying her refusal. They turn longingly back in the direction of the other.

Now that he’s the first to discover the rebel’s lost daughter, Byung-yeon is wrought with conflict over what to do with that information. He takes out his frustrations on the training field, mulling over his two allegiances: the prince, who wants to find the daughter before the prime minister’s faction does, and his rebel leader, who needs the daughter as a figurehead who would galvanize their scattered ranks.

And now that he’s befriended Ra-on, Byung-yeon thinks of her too, and how she’d declared him her hyung. It feels like a no-win situation, and he comes to no conclusion.

That night, Ra-on can’t sleep and catches Byung-yeon’s eye as he sits in his spot above. She asks if something is worrying him, and he replies that he has a question for her. He asks what Ra-on did before becoming a eunuch, and she tells him she was part of a traveling performance troupe. He asks what she did before that, and she says she lived with her mother. She heard her father died when she was very young, and never knew his name.

“It must have been difficult for you,” he notes. He asks if she still likes the palace. She thinks for a long moment.

The next day, Ra-on requests to be reassigned, and the queen’s Eunuch Sung passive-aggressively crows that he knew she wouldn’t last. He adds that the prince was headed for trouble the moment he took on the regency and brings up the recent assembly that none of the ministers attended. In light of that, Eunuch Jang warns Ra-on that every little thing could reflect badly on the prince.

Yeong has canceled the regularly scheduled civil service examination after finding its results rigged to favor the Kim clan, but this brings the scholars to court, begging the king to reconsider. They argue that this is the only opportunity for applicants from far-off regions to travel to the capital and take the exam, and Prime Minister Kim pressures the king with that argument.

Yeong replies, “If you open the road, you must also open the gate at the end of the road.” He points out that applicants can’t be given a chance when the winners have already been predetermined.

Back at his palace, Yeong notes that Ra-on isn’t around. Eunuch Jang thinks it’s because the prince was mean to her, and that’s why she she’s taken on other tasks outside.

Ra-on is currently delivering writing supplies to young (mute) Princess Yeongeun, who is playing hide and seek with her companions. Ra-on offers to wait while she plays her game, and sits by herself on the lawn.

Princess Yeongeun hides successfully from her playmates, but her face freezes in fear when she spies Prime Minister Kim walking across the courtyard. She ducks into a storeroom, only to have a court lady lock the door, imprisoning her inside.

Yeong finds Ra-on sitting alone and asks if she’s running away from him. He asks why, and she replies that she has committed a crime in deceiving everyone with her identity, and doesn’t think she can face him.

“Don’t you know?” he asks. “I’m hoping that you, not as a eunuch, but as yourself, will take one step closer to me.”

Ra-on returns, “Do you not know, either? I have flouted palace law in impersonating a man—other than as a eunuch, how could I stay at your side?”

That’s when the princess’s companions run by looking for the princess, a little frantic at her prolonged absence. A search party is convened to scour the palace grounds, and Ra-on spies a lone brush dropped on the ground. She looks around and tries the nearby door, and hears the sounds of sniffling inside.

Inside the storeroom, Princess Yeongeun looks up in hope as the doors start to open… but it’s Prime Minister Kim’s ominous face that appears in the doorway. She gasps in fright and falls over unconscious.

But it’s really Ra-on standing there—the princess had imagined it in her fear—and she rushes to the girl’s side. She’s taken back to her mother, Royal Consort Park, and Yeong sits by her bedside as she sleeps fitfully.

He recalls how bright and bubbly she used to be, while her mother sighs that her inability to speak must be frustrating for her. She thanks him for teaching her to read and write, allowing her to be as happy as she has been.

Yeong thinks back three years, to when Yeongeun had been a scared, withdrawn little girl. He had told her he would write down the name of her favorite season, and she had watched closely as he traced the lines in her palm.

Now Yeong asks Consort Park if the princess is still unable to recall anything about “that day.” Her mother confirms it, supposing that the illness was too much for her body, and that after suffering fever for several days, it had been erased from her memory.

Yoon-sung is stopped from going to the palace by his uncle, Minister Kim, who argues that the politicians are mid-plan to tame the prince. His grandfather, the prime minister, calls him aside to ask if he’s feeling sorry for his childhood friend. Yoon-sung replies that he believes the prince was right in his decision to cancel the examination.

The prime minister says that only doing the right thing doesn’t help the people prosper. But Yoon-sung informs his grandfather that he cannot agree with their side—what does strengthening their clan’s power have to do with the people’s happiness?

Prime Minister Kim warns that politics is not about making friends with the people; those with power rule over and lead the people. Yoon-sung asks if the plan to marry him to Ha-yeon is another way of maintaining their power, and his grandfather readily confirms it.

Yoon-sung asks him to find another way, because he objects to that kind of marriage. If he is to marry, he wants it to be with a woman he can talk to and share his feelings with. He’s quietly emphatic, and the prime minister looks distinctly displeased.

Ra-on sits with Ha-yeon on one of her visits to the palace, and Ha-yeon admits that she has another reason for coming by, other than seeing the princess and borrowing books. She confides that the man she has feelings for is the crown prince, and Ra-on can’t speak for a moment. She does her best to cover up her reaction, and Ha-yeon says ruefully that she’s tiring of finding excuses to talk to him, especially when he’s so curt.

She accidentally knocks her books off the table, and both ladies reach down at the same time, which gives Ha-yeon a glimpse of the pink eternity bracelet Ra-on wears. She recognizes it but doesn’t make the connection, and just explains that it means that even if the couple wearing the bracelets are separated, they are destined to reunite.

Ra-on hadn’t known that, and Ha-yeon laughs that if Ra-on received a gift without being told the meaning, her gift-giver must be as hopeless as Ha-yeon. Ra-on smiles and thinks again of Yeong’s declaration.

That night she thinks back to being a young child, dressed as a boy as she longingly watched neighborhood girls playing games. Her mother had pulled her away quickly, and Ra-on had asked how long she had to live this way. Her mother had asked her to wait just a bit longer, but Ra-on had asked angrily if she was to be kept in the dark till she died.

Yeong meets with Teacher Dasan in town, noting that rumors of the government’s turmoil are running rampant. Teacher Dasan mentions another rumor that all the scholars in the nation now start and end their days by cursing the crown prince. Ha, is he needling him on purpose?

But Yeong says that the fight has already begun, and intends to continue with his plan to hold a special examination in place of the standard one. Teacher Dasan leaves him with a bit of wisdom from his own grandfather: that a marital spat that is fought with the intention of winning leads to the ruin of the household.

Yeong asks what he’s getting at, and Teacher Dasan notes that the prince naturally began fighting with the intention of setting right wrongs, but suggests that he may have lost sight of that: Is he fighting to win, or is he fighting for change? Yeong doesn’t have a ready answer for that, and it makes him think.

After her accidental shut-in, Ra-on finds Princess Yeongeun huddled in a corner of her room. Ra-on suggests communicating with hand gestures and starts to demonstrate a thumbs-up, but pauses when she sees that the little girl is near tears.

So Ra-on corrects herself and says that it’s fine for the princess not to make any response and shares, “There are many things I’m hiding.”

The girl looks up curiously at that, and Ra-on says, “I don’t know what it is about, but I think I understand a little how you’re feeling. Because I am still trapped too. I’m hiding against my will, and, thinking that someone may open the door and find me out, I shake in fear. When do you think will we be able to open the door with our own hands and walk out?”

Yeong informs Prime Minister that he intends to carry out the civil service examination according to the original plan. He explains that his intentions were always to ensure that the best talents were chosen, not to shake up the government.

Prime Minister Kim looks wary, but says that if Yeong will make the wise decision to return everything to normal, the politicians will all return to court and assist the prince. Yeong assures him that he will abide by their principles, according to their wishes, but he looks so confident that I have to think he’s got something up his sleeve.

And so, the civil service examination is administered. The essay question is hung on a scroll: “Whose nation is Joseon?” Some test-takers look smug and pull out cheat sheets, while others—like the princess’s penpal lover, Young Master Jung—look appalled but can’t do anything about the cheating.

And then, Yeong’s arrival is announced. Everyone jumps to their feet and Eunuch Jang presents a new exam scroll, to the shock of everybody present. The new question asks about “an opposition for opposition’s sake” and how they would persuade someone in that scenario.

Yeong announces that there is no predetermined answer: “Simply persuade with your own thoughts.” He encourages them to put forth fresh new ideas for the future of Joseon.

That night in the library, Ra-on looks at her eternity bracelet, and is surprised with the prince arrives to find her here. He notes that she’s avoiding him well, only going to places where he won’t be. And because she knows him so well, if she hides, there’s nothing he can do.

She says that there are so many eyes and ears on the prince that if she’s with him, she would be unable to be comfortable for even a minute.

“But what about me, without you?” Yeong asks. “Do you think I would be comfortable?” Ra-on says that as a eunuch, she felt her usefulness. But not now, when she worries constantly that she would bring harm to him, and it scares her from being able to take that step toward him.

It looks like he’s about to step toward her, but she tenses and he pauses. She looks away, then places her bracelet down on the table.

“I know it is shameless of me,” she says, “but if you will allow me to leave the palace, I will not forget that kindness and will live well.”

Stung, Yeong’s face hardens, and he asks if that’s what she truly wants. She says yes.

He says insistently, “There are hundreds, thousands of things I can do for you, that I want to do for you. Is that the only you want from me? You would hide and run away and not see me—is that the first and last thing you would ask of me?”

She blinks back tears, and replies, “It is.” Angry and hurting, he says he understands. He dismisses her, and takes the bracelet she left behind.

Little Princess Yeongeun musters her pint-sized courage, then enters a room and approaches an armoire with trepidation. She opens it, and looks inside.

A flashback takes us back three years; she’d been able to speak then, and had hidden here during a game. Hearing sounds approaching, Yeongeun keeps quiet as a court lady runs into the room and tries to keep pursuers out.

Prime Minister Kim and two of his henchmen corner her here, and he demands to know what she had been trying to tell the prince, growing angry when she stands up to him despite her obvious fear. The court lady challenges him to kill her and cover up the truth, and he complies without even batting an eyelash: His man stabs her in the gut, just feet in front of the princess’s hiding spot.

Yeoungeun sees the woman fall, who vows with her dying breath to never leave this place and to reveal the truth of the queen’s wrongful death. Princess Youngeun tries her best to remain quiet, but something catches the prime minister’s attention, and he looks curiously in her direction, approaching the armoire and sloooowly creaking open the door.

But then, the princess’s companions come running by, and the men quietly leave the room. It leaves her undiscovered, but also terribly traumatized.

So now, Princess Yeongeun faces the empty armoire bravely, holding back her tears. It must have been quite upsetting, because a short while later, Yeong hears something about her condition and heads out immediately in concern.

Ra-on is with the princess and asks why she’d gone to that place, because she had disappeared suddenly to go there. Yeongeun looks conflicted, clearly wanting to say something but unable to speak the words. Ra-on tells her she doesn’t have to reply, but the princess reaches for her writing materials and writes down her thoughts for Ra-on.

The princess reminds Ra-on of her words about opening their own doors and walking out on their own. Ra-on smiles down at her, and from the doorway, Yeong watches the exchange.

Afterward as they leave, Ra-on trails behind Yeong as he leads them away. He stops to tell her that he regretted letting on that he knew of her secret.

If he’d known she would run away at the first sign of the truth, “I would not have deliberated over whether you were a eunuch or a woman, but over how to keep you with me just a little longer. That I could not more deeply understand you—I am sorry.”

She can only bid him goodbye, and she starts to walk away. Yeong grabs her arm to stop her, and entreats, “But even despite all that, can you not endure it? Not anywhere else, but here. At my side.”

Aw, Young Master Jung passed the civil service exam. He arrives at the palace in court dress, having been granted a government position, and is amazed and nervous at his future here. His manservant cautions him to out himself to the princess, but at least she doesn’t know what he looks like.

That’s handy, since she happens by just then, arriving at the palace newly slim from her temple stay. The first thing she does after exiting her palanquin is trip on her own skirt, and she sprawls in the dirt.

Young Master Jung hurries to offer a hand, and for a second she looks a bit moony-eyed before she recalls herself and continues on. His servant thinks she looks awfully familiar, but Young Master Jung sniffs that her sharp, skinny features lack affection, and that women should be plump like his beloved princess. HEH.

Yeong meets with Prime Minister Kim about the results of the examination, noting that even with the change, seven Kims were able to pass properly. He says that he will be sure to uphold the politicians’ principles in rewarding talent based on true merit—heh, he’s sly, using their own words as his rationale for enforcing what he wants. The prime minister can hardly argue the point.

The anxious king is relieved to hear that the government is back to normal operations, and that the politicians are back at work. Imagine that. It reinforces for the king why he’s been such a failed leader, and he asks his eunuch, “Do you know the reason I have become such an incapable king? I do not have people, people who are mine.” He adds that there is not one person who is truly his in the entire palace—everyone belongs to the prime minister.

It also makes him resolve, “I cannot let the crown prince become like me. No, I must make them—people who are wholly the prince’s.” The king tells his head eunuch to prepare for the prince’s marriage.

That evening, Princess Yeongeun drags Ra-on along by the hand, smiling impishly, then stops at a particular spot and runs off. Ra-on turns to see Yeong in the pavilion, meeting with a group of politicians, just as he turns to see her standing there.

Ra-on bows politely and starts to leave, but Yeong steps toward her, holding a hand out to her. Then he clasps the hands together, as though sending a message.

In a flashback, we see that Princess Yeongeun had told (er, written notes for) her brother of the hand messages that Ra-on had taught her. He’d been pleased at the thought that with those messages, she could communicate without carrying around her notebook, and had asked her to teach him the gestures.

So now, he stands there with a group of ministers watching curiously, and motions with his hands. She reads the words as he motions them: “I… like… you. No—love you.”

His voice takes over the narration: “So please…” He clasps his hands together entreatingly.

In flashback, the princess asks Ra-on for the gesture meaning “don’t leave.” Ra-on thinks a moment, then comes up with the motion, which Yeong performs now: a hand outstretched, brought close, then clasped with the other, and eyes closed as in prayer.

“Don’t leave, and stay by my side,” Yeong asks. He looks down at Ra-on with a smile, and she looks back at him with tear-filled eyes.

Then Eunuch Jang asks curiously what the gesture means, and Yeong improvises with a waving motion, “It means to stay far away.” Haha.

Later that night, Ra-on regards her hanbok and cosmetics and recalls the question she’d asked the princess: “When will we be able to open the door with our own hands and walk out?”

She flashes back to that encounter with her mother, when she’d asked if how long she would have to live as a boy. Her mother had grabbed her sternly and said, “Until you can protect yourself. When you’ve grown old enough that you are not daunted by me being gone. Then, live as a girl.”

Ra-on thinks of the prince’s request to endure the pain to stay with him. She thinks, “Mom, I’m fine now, aren’t I? In the ten years without you, I’ve been brave and grown on my own, so I can protect myself.”

The next day, as Yeong reads by himself in the garden, a figure approaches, dressed in hanbok. As Ra-on stands there before him, he looks up and takes in the sight with surprise and amazement.

Getting to his feet, Yeong steps closer and asks, “What would you like me to call you?”

“I am Hong Ra-on,” she says, giving him her name for the first time. “Hong. Ra. On,” he tries.

Then he smiles, and calls to her, “Ra-on-ah.”

COMMENTS

Gah, is this show great with the episode endings or what? I thought we’d hit the peak last week with those heartfelt confessions that somehow were swoony without being embarrassing or cheesy, but then we had this hour of heartache capped off with another poignant revelation. One of the things I like best about this show is its ability to walk that line between sappy and sincere, dramatic and corny. It’s partially due to great delivery, but the moments are given their impact by the subtle handling of the tone, edits, music, and overall cohesion. I wish all romances were given such fine-tuning of emotional calibration, so that you feel every pause and flicker in the eyes; it makes me react with the character in the moment, and it’s not as common an effect in dramaland as I wish were the case.

Princess Yeongeun’s storyline was a sweet way to act as a bridge between the characters; I like that we were teased of her situation and trauma well beforehand so that her place in today’s story feels a bit more organic than a Plot of the Day device. It also makes sense that she would become a potentially crucial key in Yeong’s standoff against the prime minister, because right now the old crony isn’t even aware he’s got a massive loose end, and I’m always bloodthirsty for ways that Yeong can one-up him.

The civil service examination itself seemed rather simple as a problem, because if he could just stroll into the proceedings and change the answer, was it really necessary to do a whole replacement exam that would serve the same purpose? But it was a minor point, and I like that the solution was simple, because it drives home Teacher Dasan’s point about Yeong losing his focus and getting waylaid by other intentions. Really, he proved that it was the simplest solution that netted him what he wanted, plus he got to evade that political war he’d nearly instigated with literally every single minister in the court. (Speaking of that lone duck point, I’m getting nervous for the whole marriage subplot that’s surely coming our way, because historically speaking, let’s just say that it doesn’t entail the crown prince marrying anyone named Hong. But I suppose we’ll have to cross that unpleasant bridge when we get there.)

I particularly liked the sign language as the thing to finally convince Ra-on, because there’s something so sweet and visceral about that kind of communication. It’s also a lovely way to tie in Princess Yeongeun as a sort of messenger and bridge between them, both in the literal sense (that she delivered Ra-on to that spot) and the figurative one, where they both found themselves worrying about her in the same way, and then comforting her in the same way by finding language outside of the one she’d lost. In that way, both Ra-on and the princess were able to step outside of their locked doors by finding ways to speak their hearts that didn’t involve standard words, which weren’t working. And Park Bo-gum just gave his sign language such a perfectly beseeching feeling, which really made the moment land.

Most of all, I’m beyond relieved that Ra-on is finally onboard this romance, because even though I found her reasoning credible and never thought she was out of line or being stupid or even nobly idiotic, I did wish for her to find a way out of her closet of fear and indecision, so to speak. I have no idea where their relationship could feasibly go from here, even if she’s able to reclaim her life as a woman, but that’s part of the curiosity propelling me into the next step of our story; I liked how they’ve dealt with the eunuch plotline, both comically and seriously, but I’m ready for us to move on to whatever’s next. Especially if that involves more cuddles and smiles. I mean, come on, it’s been forever since we’ve seen her smile freely, isn’t it? And now she’s got a billion and one reasons to keep it up.

I am not a fan of sageuk politics, but strangely I look forward to it in this drama. I think it gives a good balance. As much as I love OTP and their scenes, their story is tightly woven with the nasty politics. I want to see how that will unravel because it forms part of the backbone of the growth of Yeong as a future king and I am all for seeing him grow and mature and make small steps for the betterment of Joseon. Moreover, the politics is central to the inevitable conflict that will beset Yeong-On.

Well, I wouldn't go that far, because historically speaking Lee Yeong was never crowned king except posthumously. But I found an interesting fact, in history record, Yeong's mother is Queen Sunwon from Andong Kim clan, and she is the king only queen consort, but in this drama the king has 2 queen consorts and Yeong's mother is from Yoon clan instead, so it's interesting to see they modified something to adjust the story to depict the minister's power hunger.

Exactly. I am also looking forward to see where they will go with this because from what I know about the original material, they strayed from the historical events. I do hope Yeong gets to be crowned King though. hehe because I want to see him be that great King and I wanna see PBG in that red robe. hihi

It's balancing out the cheesiness for me. I can only take so much then if feels like a modern teen romance.

I cried during the entire sign language scene. Yeong looked so earnest and honest that I can imagine how he steamrolled any reservations left in Ra On's heart.

I've no words as of this moment. My heart is full.

The sign language scene was so heart felt. No words required.

PBG and KYJ - what a dream team. The way CP adores Ra-on with his eyes, words and action - which she so well deserves.

The Little Princess is also Park Shinyang's adorable daughter in My Lawyer Mr. Jo. She's really good. There'll surely be a spot for her at the KBS Drama Awards.

I couldn't have said it better. I am so glad you agree that you don't blame or feel her unjustified in withdrawing from the Park bo gum, I felt her pain and fear every bit while watching, and like you, was so glad she decided to be brave and be happy and make her prince happy. And Park bo gum shi may have just killed me....his expressions and sweetness were too much this time around...*slowlydripsbackintopuddleofmush*

I think I'm really in the minority here but... I wasn't completely sold by Ra-on's turnaround with the sign language.

I mean, I kinda get what JB meant about non-verbal expressions, and I wanna be on board that but... I just felt it wasn't as impactful as the prince's other two attempts (with the bracelet, and when he apologised for outing her secret). If anything, I think it would have worked better for me, if we pushed back Ra-on's talk with Ha-yeon towards the end, and she was so touched by his sincerity that she changed her mind.

Speaking of HY, I guess I don't completely dislike her (but I'm worried about her "using" the princess and being so flighty on their frenemy relationship) and I hope in this particular case, that PM Kim might be able to keep her for YS. I'm sure given sufficient time, and less meddling, YS might grow to appreciate her too hehe. Guy really needs a happy ending of his own.

The pace this episode seemed a bit slow, much less light-hearted, but it gave good character development for our supporting cast, so I'm okay. I'm pretty happy that Master Jung is now a scholar, and that remark about him loving the plump princess is cutesy swoony. I so wish she would learn about him soon, and get over the misunderstanding that the letters were for her maid! I really like the bumbling princess, and I'm happy that someone loves her as she is, no dieting needed!

And I'm glad to finally get the background on the young princess. Please just stay safe, and live happier, okay?

After one too many shows where good guys get obsessed with what they are trying to achieve (particularly directed at all the the stupid, mis-guided Taoists from Mirror of the Witch) that they lose sight of what's important, it's such a relief that the Yeong's "advisor" is able to put him on the right track.

Can we also save Kim hyung, please? His emotional turmoil was heart-wrenching (but such fabulous swordsmanship!) and I'm sick worried about ep 10 after looking at the preview.

I think rather than the sign language itself, it's probably the many attempts Yeong did that melted her resolve, plus Princess Yeong-eun was asking her as well when will they open the door of their hearts and face their fear? I think all of those were enough to convince Ra-on to finally open up her heart and accept her fear.

I love that sign language scene too, but like you, I did not see it as the only one that finally made her open up. It's all the other confessions of Yeong combined AND I think her talk with Princess Yeongeun had a huge impact on her. They were both in the same sort of situation. This is why I absolutely love how everything in this episode came together with the theme of opening up and speaking what is in your heart and mind.

Yes it was incremental which is really believable in the scenario.

I mean, I *kind of* get the incremental bits, but I felt a bit cheated because somehow I felt the sign language wasn't as moving/powerful as Yeong's previous attempts...

But good point from @maryxiah and @Celine about Ra-on's words coming to Princess Yeong-eun coming back to her!

The sign language didn't land for me the same way either. I got hung up on two things:

- you're standing on a literal bridge taking to your political opponents and you're going to move a step to the side to sign your love. Like, time and place? What are you trying to show? Your love transcends politics? It's the bridge to the opposition? The prince is the middle of the bridge between the factions and he'll leave it for you? Or, he can bridge only with you?

- it felt too slowed down. His three/four hand movements took like 5 minutes... The speed came off as awkward for me because it lasted too long.

I do think, though, that rather than the sign language convincing Hong, it was the little princess that did. The prince's persistence, and sweetness, definitely helped, but I think Hong needed the inspiration of the princess to get there.

Plus, for how pretty the show normally is, the setting didn't seem as lovely. /Petty.

I didn't mind the setting, plus it's not like he ditched the court assembly to get to Ra-on or anything, he simply turned his attention to her, for like what, 10 minutes? And to quote Yeong, "You can do anything, if you're the Crown Prince."

Yeah watching it again and it did seemed long because of the flashbacks and all, but it was actually really short. It was done in a bit of slow-mo to heighten the emotion.

This episode is rather slow for me but managed to show what I want,
I really impress with the child actors this episode, both of them play their part well and they became catalyst for the adult counterpart,
they become another mirror so Sam Nom can see about himself and provide Lee Young with another nature of sincerity,
I will never guess that the kindness teaching by Lee Young when he teaches the little princess actually used for showing his sincerity later,
The romantic part plays really well,
I don't know how they actually played that Ra-On feels betrayed and confused about her identity,
confessing doesn't help much because there are 2 people in the relationship,

This episode shows us how Ra-On accepted herself to change,
Ra-On realised that reality is hard to accept and all of this is too much,
then she chooses to open up about herself to him, presented her desired nature for the 1st time,
complete with the not so tidy hair detail (no one helps her) and said her name (props to Kim Yoo Jong)
What Lee Young wants is too fast for her, she didn't have time to react and this episode give her enough time to realised her own self and choose her way,
------then the preview breaks my heart

I watched this in very sleepy mode and migraine but I still manage to feel the angst when they just don't know what to do,
The story for the palace stake is little bit higher with the little prince's witness (that's really shocking) , the dad's movement and the teacher,
also, god-Byung yeon that is torn apart by the information, Lee young doesn't know Ra-On is the girl he is looking for and God Byung-Yeon probably thought LY had fooled him,
and ra-on knew nothing, he conflicted and awkward alone,

then I love the hand sign, it simple, personal and sincere, it'll be a lie to not touched by that much of sincerity,
I hope next day no separation happen (I kinda smell it in the air . . . .)

Basically CPI is a measured way to tell how a show has impact with the society, particularly in social media. The Contents Power Index rankings attempt to rank television programs based on the overall buzz that the shows create, factoring in things like internet search popularity and number of articles written about the show on news sites.

Actually I rarely hooked on a drama. And to be honest, Im not that invested/spazzed in this drama either and/or any current drama thats airing but i still keep looking out for updates and any info related to the plot.

Before the acting, i feel the writing hit me the most. Ra on dialog to her mother turned me into a mess and i havent watched the subbed episode yet. Of course if the actress was bad, the emotion wont be delivered properly so Im glad KYJ not only sold me the scene but also made me teared up.

The episode lacks action but how the writer tied Ra On and the little princess is a brilliant touch and as someone who is aspiring writer /heh this is some sort of revelation for me on how a cliche story can still be fresh. Maybe its the web novel where the amazing came from but its difficult to find a coherent spoiler since its a paid one although Id be happy to pay if the process isnt a headache since the website is korean.

And add top notch acting as cherry on top, enjoying this drama is truly a blessing.

I might sound greedy but I feel the current rating is too low for this drama. MDTC deserves 30% or even higher.

now you mention it, I know why the story feels outdated or even cliche,

It because the source material indeed comes from the past, from the era when this story starts to appear,

but the execution gives the nuance to this drama,
tbh I would like to read the novel about the sign confession,
if this was a book, I will still smile uncontrollably on this episode chapter,

In dramaland wherein it is not easy to reach double digit and a lot of dramas struggle to do so, hitting 20% is a serious achievement already. Shows that are between 10-15% are already considered big hit and successful (e.g. W which averaged in 11%). Moonlight is the 4th drama to reach 20% this year for dramas on weekdays. That's amazing. Hitting 30% is of course even better. I do wish for this drama to continue to do well, but as long as it stays in double digit, it's already successful. I can already see the benefits on the leads (e.g. there is a continued influx of CF deals for PBG). I wouldn't be surprised if PBG and KYJ works on a CF together. I hope they do. :)

This moment was so touching! It felt like RO was letting go of any hope of reuniting with her mother, her protector, and realising that she was alone, and thus alone held the agency to shape her identity from that moment onwards.

It reminded me of RO waiting for her mum on the bridge at the harvest festival as a man (probably every year?). As though, by remaining in her disguise and never changing, her mum would recognise her someday at that place they were separated.

The king is the one character I think fails in this drama. He's self-absorbed, weak, whiny, easily manipulated, dumb, cowardly and yet. . . we're supposed to believe the original queen, park Royal consort, and the crown prince all admire and love him? It doesn't compute.

Maybe he was once worthy of that estimation, but there is no evidence of it and it seems implausible. There are so many ways he sucks, even just sticking to his children and his whiny know-it-all pity parties, but I'm mostly frustrated because his poor characterization really stands out compared to the other characters. A few episodes ago he ignored the one promise he made his son, he seems to ignore his mute daughter, he knows the prime minister is dangerous, but listens to him and the Kim wife, he knows he's weak and yet thinks he can save his son with a marriage... He's like an evil deus ex machina.

Poor poor characterization in an otherwise well done show. Compare him to the prime minister, he is showing to be a more effective, and insidious, villian.

Also, though I continue to love this show and can't wait for MOAR, I look forward to getting back a. sassy Hong, b. quippy or kind Yoon-Sung, and c. hair god Byung-yeon. And more bromance.

(Aside, I thought Jinyoung was rather alien/odd looking at first, but now he seems uniquely beautiful. I'm a bit worried it's the Korean version of the Cumberbatch effect.)

I forgot which episode it was but it was revealed that the King was once like Yeong. He was full of determination and confidence in doing what is right. However, he became weak as the Kim clan populated the royal court.

He admits to being a coward and incompetent king now. He is not to be blamed wholly, I think. He does not want to make rumblings with his actions in order to keep Yeong safe. I personally don't think that is his only option, but that's how he sees it. I want him to team up with his son and gather people on their side.

I know they told us this, what I was trying to relay was that I don't find it believable. I can't imagine this man was ever like Yeong.

All his people and supporters have been executed or exiled by the prime minister and his minions.
He is being mocked in his own court because he has no one on his side to back him up.

He was only 11yrs old when he became king. By the time he was old enough to carry out reforms to help his people, he found himself powerless against the prime minister and his followers.

Just kind of put yourself in his shoes. What can you possibly do with no one on your side to say.... "yay that's a good idea your majesty, let's open up the federal reserves and feed the hungry people".
Minister Kim on the other side said.."no way, if we feed them they will keep coming back for more. How about we hike the taxes and suppress them".

Who do you think supported the king? No one and so the taxes on the common people went up because prime minister Kim had most of the ministers support.

That triggers the Hong Gyeong-nae rebellion led by Ra-on's father.

I think the king suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. The queen & her power hungry dad are taking advantage of his situation instead of trying to seek the cure for the king's condition.

Yes. That too. Thank you for pointing that out. I do wonder if the King knows the exact truth and the details of that riot and the death of the queen. In the previous episodes, he asked Yeong to never ask about the queen, so I think he does know a bit.

I get that we're supposed to see that, but I still don't buy the characterization of on the one hand having an understanding the Kim's are up to no go, and crying into their arms when he's overwhelmed.

The king wasn't always this wimpy. He was traumatized by the riot. And it's been said by his opponents time and time again that he was once idealistic like Yeong but in the end gave up. That's what Yeong's political opponents hope will happen to him as well.

I think the king was purposely written to be weak, because that's how they'd be able to contrast him and the crown prince and why the crown prince has to step up as regent instead, because we have a very incapable king at our hand. And with this, we get to set up more conflicts for the crown prince and his lover.

This King Sunjo is much more realistic and done right than Mirror's king. It's not even worth comparing.

Kim Seung Soo is a veteran sageuk actor who has his fair share of playing royal characters.
He is doing exactly what he should be doing and more. Listen to the sound of his voice and speech, his expression and body language, his eyes etc.
He loves his people but he can't do anything for them. The only thing left that he can do is to be a father and protect his son.

His character is what makes this drama feels a little bit like a sageuk to me because he takes me away from all the overused modern clichés.

I do sympathize with him. He could have been a great visionary and reform minded king like his father Yi-san. It's too bad that he was so young when he ascended the throne. His wife's family took advantage of it and amassed their power before he could take over government affairs.

If this were like any other drama I'd want our OTP to make a run for it and just be cute like that last scene until they're old and gray.

But I really want Yeong to be crowned King and watch him be an awesome one too. I've loved watching him go through problems and then have those lightbulb moments that go oh so perfectly with his sneaky smile.
I've loved watching him learn new things about himself and lessons in general. I want him to learn about what happened to his mom, and not become cold or heartless or blinded by rage when he finds out, but be stronger instead. Stronger than his father ever was and ever will be. And that doesn't even cover the impending obstacles he and Ra On will be facing once her identity's out. Because I also want to see what and how Ra On will make of it. Are we gonna see that spunk back from before she became the eunuch? Are we gonna see a new side of her when she finds out what happened to her mom and who her dad really was? Not that I'm not loving all the heart she showed this episode. Our heroine is so full of pure heart that she is just so contagious.
I love these two individually and I love them together. That's my favorite kind of OTP.

And I want more bromance. Even with that small bit of YS confronting his grandfather about the exams, I cheered cause I can file that under Bromance<3
BY as usual stole my heart unexpectedly when he was empathetic towards Ra On talking about her childhood. What a precious thing, ninja skills and all.

Even more than the romance, I really just wanna watch all these kids become better as they grow. I agree with the comment about how great it would be if we could have Yeong RaOn, YS and BY establish a bond as a group of friends, maybe team up later on. I would love that.

This show knows what it wants to be and what it wants to accomplish and it executes that perfectly. My heart is just singing.

Just. Hit me with everything, show.

Yeong's journey of learning, be it related to his duties or his heart, is just wonderful to watch. He's made mistakes which he owned and took responsibility for. I just love that he is a man of both words and actions.

Yeong is taking small steps toward becoming a good and strong king (if this drama will go that far). I look forward to see more people on his side in the royal court. I give props to Yeong for doing his royal duties, while managing his love life on the sidelines. LOL He's quite the multi-tasker, isn't he?

If they do a drama together, ovaries all over the world will explode, and people will turn deaf from all the squees.

It would be epic because I'd root for the bromance over everything else.

And second lead syndrome would be real. All too real.

I'd also hate it because it would ruin me for all future dramas (very hard to top this pairing!)

But yeah. I'd die happy if it came true. Even if all they did was sit down together at a table and recite Hangul.

SJK and PBG have a CF together too. Of course a drama together would be even better. hehe! Blossom Entertainment is so lucky to have both stars.

0

My heart literally shook hard when Yeong said Ra-on-ah.. I so wished my name was Ra-On in that moment! Should I go off to the Civil Court (or wherever it is done) today to change my name? Do they even recognize that name in India?

The CP is killing me with the way he loves and then shows that love! He might just be the most awesome romantic lead ever! He never forces her, but simply keeps professing his love in multiple ways. That sign- confession really killed me, and it really is the PBG magic working too well. His eyes say it all- in every scene.

I missed the other 2 male leads in this episode. Just scene each is not enough. But then I got a lot more PBG, so I can't complain.

Also can they please close their doors whenever they meet!? My heart can't take the fear. I always worry that someone would be observing them- Kim Hyung actually saw them together and heard their conversation. Now I just fear that Ha Yeon or someone would see Ra-On in that garden with Yeong.

Waiting patiently for the next episode.

Yeah I felt like kdrama like to glorify their male lead aura, it's okay but please don't be so invading,
don't be so off the chart boasting how awesome it is to finally melt "the beast's heart" like it's an achievement that female lead needs to do,

ofc it's swoon worthy to attract the unattainable but most often the female lead never feels it's wrong to be a property, there are people who like to backup from the back but all of that need consent, need talking and not one-way decision,

that line would work great with funny banter and the "euuh" but joking by the female response after they settled that they have the relationship,

it reminds of Scarlet Heart when the 4th prince force his way because the female lead looked like giving him "the signal" and after she refused and retaliate, (they have the action and talked about that etc),
he realised that he shouldn't win a woman like that and back down,

I am in so deep with this one. I'm just at that point where I adore everything, I FEEL everything. Even with the slow, more thoughtful pace this hour, my heart became more engaged with each minute.

I love that our leads respond to each other's facial expressions, not just the words they say. It's part of what makes me feel so much along with them. After Ra-on told him her name, you could see her nerves and uncertainty over appearing as a girl before him cloud her expression. I love that I could see Yeong taking note of all this, and that moment of dawning understanding before he came out with just the right thing to say: her name, intimately. Ahhh, just perfect.

I'm actually really excited to see where this step from Ra-on will lead so I hope they wait on the royal wedding angst until next week or, at the earliest, the very end of next episode. I want a chance to see if claiming her identity as a woman will change her behavior. And, now that she's onboard the romance, I'm really excited to see how she'll respond to Yeong's swoony advances now that she has nothing holding her back. She does give love advice, after all. I'd love to see her find some of that confidence she so-admired in Ha-yeon and be more vocal about her feelings for him. Ahhh, I can't wait.

There's something very moving about RO being able to stand before LY stripped of the weight of her disguise and misgivings after dancing around the conflict of her identity for so long. It's so sweet that RO's starting to accept the femininity she's been repressing. What else can a girl do before the earnest stare of Bogummy oppa, tho?

I'm probably one of the few looking forward to the wedding from a narrative standpoint. The characters need a good shake up. Their dynamics have been stagnant these past few eps and I'm starting to feel it.

- LY & RO are in their push-pull bubble with some political tangent of the day.
- YS is floating around in the bg not opposing LY but not exactly taking any compelling action against his gramps.
- HY's still helplessly pining after oppa. I.e. she's us.

Drama, throw what you've got at me. Bring on the shitestorm of conflict and angst. Give me a well-earned happy ending.

everyone already at their place and even scholar jang come to the palace,

what I appreciate the most about this drama is how they deliver story clearly and make the ending worth every ep, the ending is not the cliffhanger to build what is the response but what they gonna do when we know they have much more trouble,

I feel like they will make this hard since I read the writer said ep 10 is the turn phase and I am glad they have the confession moment and settled the couple before anything,
too many drama like to make the longing phase inside other plot and make them just didn't confess because whatever reason that somehow can't be talked,

the story telling is good that no one asked what happen in the story or what the character means, it clear and they showed what they mean,

it's like everyone got a good layer to show that they aren't just behaved for the sake of angst all the time,

I was in a lot of danger today watching this episode in the office as my eyes welled with tears. I had to hurriedly fan them away with my hands or my colleagues would think I'm nuts or emo! Speaking of hands ...

The sign language confession was so touching. When CP reached out his hand then brought it back into clasped hands with an overlaying scene of Ra-On doing the same was beautifully directed. It reminded me of the scene when Ra-On did the rain dance. There, she and CP also reached out their hands towards each other in the fields but while then, their hands missed each other symbolically, this time, I felt like symbolically their hands touched and found each other.

Little Ra-on killed it with her emotions asking mom until when will she keep being a boy and when will she know the reason for doing so. When she went "Until I die?" I cried.

Reality is ... There are follow up after any confession... Just the word itself "confession" so honest right... And Park Bo Gum, I now declare as the epitome of confession. Monument should be build. Boys or Men should learn a lesson or two from him... I don't believe people could act sincerity but actually when you tell a story about love so impossible, it can be acted.
As a Crown Princehe could give her the world right... But he give her to choose... And dealt with her answers...

Ra-on's reactions to Yeong's confession was understandable but I kept thinking how can you say that when he is looking at you with those eyes, his eyes, OMG! Everytime his eyes are filled, mine are too, he carries the emotions so so well that you can't help but feel for him, my heart ached for him when he grabbed her hand and asked her if it was hard to endure even when she's by his side, he looked desperate, pleading!

I don't know what would happen now, she dressed like a girl for him but she can't live like a girl next to him, and the marriage that Yeong has no idea about yet, oh the angst!

For now I'll just keep enjoying all the swoony moments, I'll keep re-watching them till I find myself ready for what's next!

Thanks JB for the recap.

"he looked desperate, pleading!"

And longing for her. It was heartbreaking to watch, but it was necessary, especially for Ra-on. I'm glad she did not immediately accept him. We got to see her go through her emotions and conflicts and Yeong understood her more.

That sign language confession was so beautiful, I cried. I love the fact that it was a sign Raon had thought of and was used by Yeong to show his sincerity and love.

That "I like you - no, LOVE you," part made me cry and then that "Don’t leave, and stay by my side." had me bawling. It was so beautifully done, the editing, the music, and Park Bo Gum's acting.

I suddenly remembered why I love Discovery of Romance so much. I love the subtle and silent moments in that drama that is accompanied by lovely music and sometimes, silence. They have the same PD, and I see it in this drama as well. Though a bit more beautifully done here.

and that "Raon-ah." My heart fluttered.

Love the little girl actresses (young Ra-On and the little princess)!

Can we skip the arranged marriage of our CP? I'm not looking forward to it , even if it's clear from all the hints (in the show) that our OTP will eventually be together. I just don't wanna go through that angst.

Um, I actually found this episode a little slow, maybe I just got used to having fight scenes and stuff... asking over and over and just mulling in indecision... But what amazed me was the sincerity with which both leads do their whatever scenes, be it talking to or guarding over the little princess, Bogummy put it all in. It is not just the romantic scenes. also in his confrontation with premier Kim. he treats every scene, every word, every glance with the same sense of responsibility and devotion as the "highlighted" scenes. it is like "taking it lightly" is not in his vocabulary.
and Kim Yoo Jung... I wonder if she lives as her character? she feels so absorbed it seems like she never steps out of her role even out of shot from cameras.

so disappointed in the character of Ha Yeon. She hasn´t had much to do, stays in the background. I hope they won´t make her one-dimensional in the second half of the show either... if at least she was more active...

the chubby-to-skinny princess is endearing and hilarious whatever form she takes. Can she have her own spin-off, please? although it would be better if she was more tied into the plot right here. she deserves more than being just a weird and cute side character.

Ha Yeon would have been awesome from a political stand but the focus is on the romance so the chance of her being the mean girl is pretty high.

I think for iTunes store, they only come out as a whole album when the drama is finished. I tried looking for OST Part 1 or Soyou (one of the artist's names) and it's not there yet.

As an example, W's whole album OST was released last Sept 14. So maybe once MDBC ends. :)

Thanks for the recap, JB!

Swooning right along with everyone here. I like that Yeong isn't afraid of expressing his feelings anymore now that he's already taken the first step. He made sure to tell RO clearly what he means and how he feels. And when RO resisted his pursuit because she feared for the consequences for him and did not want to cause him any harm, he still persisted. I loved the hand signs scene--learning to speak that language from the little princess in order to communicate his heart to RO was beautiful. The end scene was perfect as well when he finally saw her as a lady without any hiding. The love in his eyes is just overflowing... What I love about Bogummy is his expressive eyes and faces in conveying various emotions. Yoojungie is awesome as well and I love them together so much.

I liked the BY scene when he was debating between the prince, his group, and RO... The sword training to release his emotions was badass.

It's good to see YS having his own thoughts and being bold enough to tell his grandpa to his face.

Yeong allowing the exams to happen and then switching the topic was brilliant! Love our smart CP!! ^^

So funny the guy who likes the princess passed the exam!! I wonder when he will recognize her. Heehee... I guess her weight loss regime is working.

I'm surprised HY didn't make the connection with the bracelet. I suppose she must think there are multiple sets for sale? But still, RO was wearing the pink one. If a lady had tried to confess to him, shouldn't the logic be that she would wear the blue one since she's a he to most people? Anyway, her personality is still likable for now. I'm not sure what would happen if she knows RO is actually a girl and the one who already has Yeong's heart...

I just want OTP to keep their couple bracelet for now. Do. not. wear. in. public. LOL of course that will not happen.

I can't quite figure out Hayeon just yet. For now, she's nice and sweet, but she is determined to get what she wants. I wonder how she'll change when she finds out. She may be in the position of becoming a crown princess, but like the queen in TMTETS, she'll have to endure the fact that she will never be loved by the crown princess.

"Yeong doesn’t have a ready answer for that, and it makes him think." Actually Yeong smiled at the end which shows he grasped the message and suggests that he had thought of a solution. The scene following this evinces this. This episode is beautifully acted and PBG really made every scene count. KYJ did a great job showing her dilemma and concerns. Although the hand signal scene is romantic, I couldn't help cringing a bit as I think the others would be stupid not to sense what was going on. Servants especially in the palace tend to be observant as they live in fear of their master. Moreover, CP was saying if the servants were also taught the hand signals, then they could understand the Little Princess without having her to write her thoughts out, which would mean they would figure out what was going on. Sorry, I can't help the realist in me speaking even as the rest of me is melting into puddles.

Dasan is a pen name for the historical figure Jeong Yak-yong. He was an adviser and confidant of the late King Jeongjo ( Yeong's grandfather).

I'm pretty sure Hong Ra-on is the rebel leader Hong Gyeong-nae's daughter.

'I’m getting nervous for the whole marriage subplot that’s surely coming our way, because historically speaking, let’s just say that it doesn’t entail the crown prince marrying anyone named Hong.'

As of recently I have been reading the Memoires of Lady Hyegyong. The Lady's family name was Hong as well. And sometimes I find the similarities between the dramas (Secret Door) and this one quite striking. Not just because the actress is the same but regarding the 'trouble' the prince is always getting into, the political scheming, the complicated father son relationship in the beginning, the interim stuff and all those things... anyone else? No?

As has been mentioned by a few other reviewers, the plot of this drama is not unique so yes, it has many similar elements to other dramas. What it excels in is the excution, pacing, cinematography and acting.

0

Required fields are marked *

The complicated relationship between Sado and his father Yeongjo was true though even without Lady Hyegyong account from her own point of view.
(It's much better portrayed in "Eight Days" than "Secret Door").

King Sunjo was basically forced out by the Kims so Yeong can be in the position of power. His mother was from the Kim clan and his grandfather was the head of the Andong Kim clan.
Yeong wouldn't have anyone opposing him. He had all the support from his mother's powerful family so the writers changed the history and make the Kims his political enemies so it'll be more interesting.

I don't think they would have thrown that at us without hinting at something.

I have no full knowledge of the web novel and I decided not to go looking for information so I can freely enjoy the drama with referencing back to the original.

But I've been thinking how will that comment about Yoonsung factor in with our story as well. I think it is important but like what @Kiara said, it does not make sense for him to be king because he's not of royal blood. The factions can choose who they want to put as the King but they have always been of the royal family. So that comment in the earlier episode is really interesting. And since this drama takes liberty just like the novel, maybe they will go that route. I dunno... hihi

I have no knowledge of the web novel as well, not that I'm able to read it anyway. But the writer has been taking liberty changing the history in some parts, I wonder if they'd do the same to Yeong's future.

0

@Celine and maryxiah

I think we are getting on to something here. Maybe the face-reader was trying to say that their fate would switched in the end. Yoon-sung would take Yeong's place and die a young age and Yeong would be the one to live a long life. Neither one of them became king so I don't think it has something to do with the throne.

*fate will switch*

If i see Prime minister Kim opens the door like that looking at me with those eyes., i would also definitely faint and never regain consciousness. He is so scary sometimes.

I miss the chubby cheek Princess. Why does she have to take those *cotton balls inside her cheek* to make her face look slim. She was damn adorable in having a plump face.

I was hoping Ra On to wear that beautiful Hanbok that Yoon Sung gave to Ra-on, the one that CP saw Ra On when he discovered that he was a girl. Anyways, finally she accepted him.

Loved the hand signlas for saying 'i LOve You'. That was so sweet and deep. It really did made me teary.
I wish those hand signals will continue.

If CP finds out that Hong guy's daughter is Ra-on, who lead the rebel group, then it is seriously going to create a rift between CP and Ra-On.
