Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 11

I was half afraid for this week to roll around for Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, because it felt like we’d been happy for so long that doom was just around the corner. But I’m pleased to report that as of today’s episode, my heart is still intact and beating just fine, if a little pinched at the poignant moments today brings us. The emotions are a bit more subdued in this episode, but not in a bad way; I love this kind of sweet, heartfelt storytelling where love is about so much more than pure romance.

EPISODE 11: “Promise”

Head Eunuch Han says that he has been looking for Ra-on for a long time, and Yeong arrives in time to hear this and ask how the eunuch knew her name.

There’s a long moment as everyone takes in this information. Then, Eunuch Han explains that he knew Ra-on as a child, although she doesn’t remember it now.

The men sit down for a private talk, and Eunuch Han explains that he owes a great debt to Ra-on’s mother. He had looked after her closely for a time, but lost contact after a sudden separation.

Both men tread carefully, wary of saying too much but feeling that they know what the other person knows. Yeong asks if Eunuch Han “already knows too.” Eunuch Han replies, “That [she] is unable to be a eunuch?” That’s confirmation enough.

Yeong says that the eunuch now has the opportunity to repay his debt, and requests that he take good care of Ra-on as the head of the eunuch department. Eunuch Han agrees to do so.

Ra-on tries to ask Eunuch Han about the meeting the minute he steps outside, but he advises her to hold her questions until he seeks her out separately. For now, she’s left to wonder.

Later that evening, Yeong tells Ra-on that he will reschedule their meeting with Teacher Dasan. She asks what kind of man he is, and Yeong replies that Teacher Dasan is a good person to learn things from, “except for one thing—his drinking habits.” Hearing that Teacher Dasan goes around talking to animals when drunk, Ra-on fondly recalls that her grandfather used to do similar things.

Yeong’s gaze softens as he calls Ra-on’s name softly, then leans in close, holding her stare. Then he playfully taps her with his brush, dotting her forehead with ink, and giggles to himself.

Ra-on doesn’t laugh, though, and his smile fades. Yeong replies more seriously, “It is my heart.” Ra-on asks what he means by that, and he replies that he “had his eye on her” a long time ago—a pun on the phrase that sounds like “paint a dot.” Yeong smiles, looking proud of his wordplay, and I’m pretty sure the camera cuts out just before Ra-on gives an eyeroll.

Now that Byung-yeon also knows that Head Eunuch Han is part of the rebel cause, he asks if he’d hidden his identity in order to punish those who betrayed them. Eunuch Han says that he’s never worried about Byung-yeon, because Byung-yeon knows too well who destroyed his family.

Eunuch Han adds that he has served three kings, and that the moment they ascended to the throne, what started out with small expectations ended in frustration and despair. “There is no more hope for a Joseon ruled by the Yi family,” he says.

Byung-yeon asks what their secret society will do to ensure a new hope for the future. Is it another uprising? Head Eunuch Han replies that an uprising is merely one means: “How can a riot give hope?” Well, I sure hope that means you have a better idea, Mr. Cryptic Smartypants.

Eunuch Han asks if Ra-on truly remembers nothing of the last rebellion ten years ago, and Byung-yeon confirms it.

Yeong visits the little grocer girl in her jail cell, watching her cry with a heavy heart. He recalls how she had spoken of the king with hope, as someone who would care for his people’s sufferings. Despite being burdened by her plight, however, he can’t do much to help her.

At court, the ministers propose a harsh interrogation of the girl to get some answers about her supposed rebel activities. When Yeong protests the cruel punishment, the ministers counter that her crime is grave enough to merit a death penalty. Yeong demands that proof be submitted of her alleged spying, but the minister replies that interrogation (read: torture) will provide that evidence.

Yeong declares angrily, “If it is true that a ten-year-old child has learned to be a spy before learning to read, then the people who deserve stern rebukes are myself and you all.” He orders the girl released, and this time, they concede.

The king’s meal taster discovers that the food she is about to eat turns the silver chopsticks dark—a sign of poison. This throws the court into an uproar, and officers search the palace top to bottom for clues, which turns up one man who’d been noted a suspicious entrant to the palace. And who should it be but the father of that grocer girl.

Still-lovesick Young Master Jung lurks around for a glimpse of Princess Myeongeun, ducking out of sight and trailing like a heartbroken puppy. The princess ignores her court lady’s urging to eat—she’s determined to maintain her newly trim figure—and heads out for a walk.

She pauses to look at herself in a mirror, and only then glimpses Young Master Jung in the background. She catches him following in her tracks and confronts him about it, and Young Master Jung is so nervous and incoherent that it just makes her assume the worst.

The princess takes him for a creeper and yells for help, then trips while backing away. Young Master Jung lurches forward to catch her, grabbing her closely to himself… before his knees then give out and he goes falling backward. Ha, romantic gesture fail.

Princess Myeongeun lands right on top of him, then slaps him in outrage. He asks if she’s okay, and she slaps him again. But he just asks yet again if she’s okay, and it confuses her into stopping the slaps; she leaves him with a warning not to lurk around anymore.

It’s only after she’s gone that he opens the box he’d been carrying, containing the princess’s favorite sweets.

The Ministers Kim inform Yeong (I’m sure with relish) that the culprit in the poisoning attempt must be the girl who was released on the prince’s orders. Both the father and daughter have suspiciously fled, and the ministers pressure Yeong to order them captured and executed.

All of the eunuchs’ quarters are searched, including Ra-on’s, and that turns up a woman’s hanbok. While proof of nothing on its own, it’s odd enough to raise suspicions.

The grocer father and daughter are caught in no time, and Prime Minister Kim uses this opportunity to pressure the king to hasten the prince’s marriage, arguing that it will stabilize restless public sentiment. The king is reluctant to force the issue, saying that Yeong has no desire to marry now, but the prime minister asks pointedly, “Has following the prince’s wishes ever resulted in proper results?” Would we even know, master of sabotage?

The prime minister states that he will begin the bride selection process, and assures the king that he will alleviate his troubles.

That evening, Yeong thinks back to the advice his mother once gave him, when he had asked what kind of king she wanted him to become. She had told him to be a king with keen sight who was not deaf, so that he would not ignore the plight of those in lowly positions.

Moreover, she had urged him to treat every one of his citizens as though they were his only one. She had taken Yeong’s hand and asked, “Will you promise your mother that you will become this kind of king?”

Now as he lays his head wearily on his arm, he asks Ra-on, “Is what our eyes see the truth? Whose words should be trusted? What happens if what I believed to be right is wrong? When everything is difficult, what should I do?”

Ra-on shares something her grandfather used to say: that a sad heart leads you to doubt everything. He repeats the words, then smiles at her: “Then, I need you.”

He asks her to ease his doubts with her joy. Ra-on beams warmly at him, resting her face on her hand, just inches away from him. They sit there for a minute, staring at each other lovingly.

She asks if that worked, and he replies yes, that it has filled him with joy (ra-on).

Prime Minister Kim meets with Ha-yeon’s father, Minister Jo, to revisit the issue of their children’s marriage. Minister Jo looks both relieved and apologetic to realize that the prime minister already knows that the king spoke to him secretly about marrying Ha-yeon to the prince. Then he looks distinctly queasy at the prime minister’s confidence that Ha-yeon will marry Yoon-sung as initially planned.

Prime Minister Kim declares that the bride selection will yield a princess from the Kim clan, and gives Minister Jo the choice to either take his hand, or to find his own power cut off.

Eunuch Sung takes the lady’s hanbok found in Ra-on’s things to the queen, who tries to figure out what it means. She can’t quite believe a eunuch could actually be a woman, but decides she will have to confirm her suspicions directly. Eunuch Sung suggests that the prince won’t like that, but the queen seems to relish the idea of his reaction.

The issue of the poison weighs on Ra-on’s mind, and she asks Do Ki for information, as he has learned a little about poisons. Ra-on finds it curious that the tainted food was fed to animals, and none of them died.

Do Ki tests the tainted silverware with specially prepared water, then demonstrates to Ra-on and Yeong how the dirt wipes off—something that doesn’t happen with poison. It’s unclear what caused the color to darken in the first place, but finding that out will be their next task.

Yeong heads out into the city to visit the healer, and as he walks into the yard, a woman walks out—wait, Ra-on’s mother is still alive? He looks curiously at her as she passes by, but Yeong can’t know what Ra-on’s mother looks like.

Ah, so Teacher Dasan is currently serving as neighborhood healer. Yeong asks him again to return to government service, and when Dasan points out that the palace already employs many qualified doctors, Yeong clarifies that he doesn’t mean in a medical capacity. He needs help saving a wrongly accused girl, and reminds Teacher Dasan of his words to never give up on a single citizen.

Ra-on is brought before the sneering queen, who shows her the hanbok discovered in her quarters. The queen declares that she will confirm her doubts with her own eyes and orders Ra-on stripped.

Ha-yeon comes upon Yeong in the courtyard, and asks if he’s out for some fresh air. He notes that she has become increasingly fearless, which she takes as an admonition. She apologizes for her rudeness, but Yeong clarifies that he meant she’s fearless for walking around alone at night.

Ha-yeon asks hesitantly if he disliked her at the outset because she was too forward about her feelings. Yeong replies that there’s a woman in his heart, and that it’s not her fault.

Ha-yeon’s heart sinks, and she asks what kind of woman it is. But before he can reply, Eunuch Jang comes running in and gasps out something about Ra-on and the queen’s palace. Yeong heads out immediately.

Thankfully, when Yeong arrives, Ra-on is still clothed and her secret intact. For now.

The queen kneels to look at Ra-on’s face closely, cooing how much of a shame it is to waste such a beautiful face on a man. At that, Yeong’s eyes sharpen and he orders the queen to take her hands off Ra-on.

The queen presents him with the hanbok found in Ra-on’s room. She explains that with all of the rumors and suspicions swirling around the prince lately, she thought to address them here, before witnesses, to clear them up once and for all. How thoughtful of her.

Without betraying any emotion, Yeong tells her to go ahead. The queen presses Ra-on to answer to why she has the hanbok, or to remove her clothing and prove herself. Ra-on struggles to find something to say, unable to defend herself.

Then Yeong orders Ra-on harshly to do as the queen commands—shocking everyone, including the queen herself. He next turns his scorn on the queen for going to such lengths over one eunuch, toying with everyone at court over rumors. “So let us reveal now who is right,” he states. “And if there is any mistake, I will demand that the utmost responsibility be taken.”

So now we’re playing chicken with his bluff, and while the queen looks a little unnerved at Yeong’s conviction, she orders Ra-on to obey. Not bothering to wait, she starts to claw at Ra-on’s robe with her own hands, and Yeong has to stand by and watch.

But then, a new visitor is announced: the king’s head eunuch. He tells the queen that it is no difficult task to strip one eunuch of his clothing, but requests that she confirm the situation in a manner that preserves the dignity of the eunuch position.

He reminds the queen that Ra-on passed the eunuch department’s examination, and that Eunuch Sung personally oversaw the re-examination. That puts Eunuch Sung on the spot (since we know he skipped out and let Eunuch Ma take over), and he has to agree.

Head Eunuch Han then makes the argument for her own modesty, saying that it would be less than decorous for the mother of the nation and a pregnant queen to look upon a bare-nekkid man. What would happen if the king were to hear about this?

Now Yeong plays devil’s advocate, asking Eunuch Han to leave them be, since both he and the queen are the type who cannot let doubts go unaddressed. He presses the queen to continue and put these suspicions to rest.

But now, the queen is beset with concerns for herself, and self-preservation wins out. She lets go of Ra-on and orders her taken away. Phew, safe for another day, although that was quite the risky gamble Yeong took. If the queen had been the least bit stupider or smarter, we’d have been screwed.

Later at Ra-on’s quarters, Yeong sits at her bedside while Ra-on sleeps. Byung-yeon arrives and asks if something happened. Yeong replies, “I am only trying to keep a precious person next to me. Why do regretful things keep happening?”

Byung-yeon doesn’t know what to say, but Yeong just says he’s thankful to his friend, which seems to throw Byung-yeon into another bout of guilt.

He calls Yoon-sung for a drink, which is unusual enough to make Yoon-sung wonder why. Byung-yeon replies that felt nostalgic, and also that he felt Yoon-sung would be in a similar mood.

Yoon-sung asks after Ra-on, having heard of the incident with the queen. Byung-yeon says she’s fine, “Because the prince is with [her].”

Yoon-sung says that when they were younger, he wanted to be the prince’s most reliable friend, but at some point he became an uncomfortable presence. “And for the first time,” Yoon-sung says, “I found a woman I wanted to keep at my side—”

“Don’t say it,” Byung-yeon interrupts. “Just keep it in your heart.”

But Yoon-sung overrides that warning, saying that he won’t keep things inside anymore: “This is the first time I’ve wanted something this much.”

The next day, Teacher Dasan makes his way to the palace, and pauses to ask a passing eunuch for directions. The second he sees Ra-on’s face, his eyes widen in recognition—and then, Ra-on’s eyes widen too. They circle each other warily, studying each other’s faces, and declare simultaneously, “Grandfather?” “Ra-on-ie?”

She hushes him before anyone can hear him call her by name, and tells him she goes by Sam-nom here. He’s naturally curious to know how she came to be a eunuch, but she tells him that’s a long story, and then they hug warmly. Teacher Dasan marvels at their reunion after so many years, and Ra-on recites his own words, that people who are destined to meet will meet somehow.

Teacher Dasan thinks back ten years, to when soldiers had shown up at his door looking for the rebel leader’s wife and daughter. He had managed to harbor them in his home safely then, at least for a time.

And then, Yeong shows up and asks curiously how these two know each other. Ha, always one step late to the party, aren’t you? They all stand there a moment, putting the pieces together, and Ra-on realizes, “Then… Grandfather is Dasan…?”

Yeong gapes. “Grandfather?”

Teacher Dasan is brought in to inspect the food served to the king, and he picks out one dish as the culprit: an herb whose sulfurous content turned the silver dark. He eats some to demonstrate that it’s safe, then wonders why all of the royal doctors kept their mouths shut—they should all have been aware of its properties. Why let the situation turn so dire?

From the look on his face, it seems Yeong has an idea why. And just in case we weren’t a hundred percent sure of the culprit, the Ministers Kim crow to themselves that the prince will probably be quaking in his boots, because no doctor would dare flout the prime minister’s orders and inform him of the truth. They figure that the prince should soon realize that nobody in the palace is on his side.

But they’re one step behind, because this discovery enables Yeong to release the grocer and his daughter from prison. He goes to see them, and the father immediately recognizes him as the prince and drops to his knees in gratitude. The girl recognizes him from the lantern festival and only now is told that Yeong is the prince.

Yeong apologizes for the trials she’s suffered, and she asks if her wish to see the king has come true. He says yes: “You have not forgotten what you wanted to ask the king, have you? Be sure to watch and see if I am making a good nation.”

Yeong and Ra-on walk Teacher Dasan out to the palace gate, and Yeong thanks him for his help and asks when he will give him his answer (about returning to service). Teacher Dasan deflects once more, saying merely that he’s an old man who couldn’t possibly be much help, and turns to go.

Ra-on stops him to ask if Teacher Dasan has heard from her mother. We know he must be aware she’s alive, but he merely replies that he’ll hope to deliver better news next time.

The king informs Yeong of his intention to proceed with the marriage, and Yeong protests once more, saying that he doesn’t wish to enter an unwanted marriage. His father understands that feeling, and says that he has not lived one day without fear or confusion since ascending to the throne at the age of ten.

He likens the feeling to walking against a rough current: “I had felt certain that I had taken ten steps, but found that I was only standing in the same spot, moving my legs in place. In order to go from the current to a safe place, must I not at least grab on to a tree branch?” He tells Yeong to marry Ha-yeon.

Ra-on straightens books in the library, thinking of Eunuch Jang’s words about how nice it would be for the prince to marry into a strong family and gain supporters. Yeong finds her there, whispering into her ear, and asks what thoughts have her so preoccupied.

Ra-on asks him to accompany her to her quarters, and he happily complies, walking with her to her building… then back to his, then back to hers again. He teases her about being loath to part ways, and she tells him these days, she is happiest when he calls her name.

Yeong replies that he’s happiest then, too—to call her name, and have her there in front of him. She tells him she won’t wish for anything more, but Yeong disagrees, saying that he will aspire for even more: “When you like someone, is it not natural to be greedy for more?”

Ra-on agrees with a smile, replying, “I am already your person, so do that.” However, she adds that she doesn’t want him doing dangerous things for her: “Just because I cannot be by your side as a woman, my love will not disappear. So…”

He cuts her off, catching her drift and wanting her to stop. Ra-on continues, “Please do not refuse your marriage anymore.”

It upsets him so much that he storms off, while Ra-on does her best to choke down her tears.

Yeong mulls over the conversation he had earlier with Teacher Dasan, where he had confided that Ra-on was the woman he had wanted to be with. Teacher Dasan had asked why he would go to such lengths over a mere eunuch. Yeong had replied that she was his beloved, who just happened to be in the guise of a eunuch.

Yeong had asked for his help overcoming their status difference and their crossed fates. But Teacher Dasan had told him, “The person she needs is not you.”

That thought makes his face grim, but he wears an even more determined one the next morning, when he drops in on Teacher Dasan with something important to discuss.

Later that day, Yeong sits with Ra-on and tells her about the lantern girl and how she’d said the king would know what a good nation would entail. Ra-on asks what kind of nation Yeong wants Joseon to be.

He thinks, and says, “I would like for children to live as children, and for women to be able to live happily as women.”

Yeong takes her hand in his, both of them still wearing their eternity bracelets, and says, “Until I make that kind of nation for you—can you wait? In the new Joseon that I make, you will be my first person.”

They smile sweetly at each other, but then his gaze grows long and he thinks back to his conversation with Teacher Dasan this morning. Teacher Dasan had asked what would happen if reuniting Ra-on with her mother would prove dangerous to Yeong. He’d pointed out, “If you covered it up and pretended not to know, you and Ra-on might be able to live happily.”

Now, Yeong tells Ra-on earnestly, “If, in a difficult moment, you must let something go… that must not be me. Can you promise me that?”

Ra-on promises readily. Yeong looks relieved, and says, “I think my wish has been fulfilled now.” She asks what wish that is.

“My wish asking for your wish to be fulfilled,” he replies.

Ra-on’s face turns serious as that sinks in, and Yeong adds, “I’ve found your mother.”

Yeong’s gaze shifts to something in the distance, and Ra-on turns around to see her mother standing there, smiling at her. They slowly walk toward each other, and Ra-on calls out to her mother.

Her mother says, “I’ve come too late, haven’t I?” and then envelops her in a hug as they sob in each other’s arms.

From a distance, Yeong watches with tears in his own eyes.

COMMENTS

This wasn’t an episode of grand romance or quotable confessions, but it had such quiet moments of intimate connection that I thought it was quite moving. In fact, the quieter it got, the more affecting I found the interactions, such as them sitting quietly together writing at a desk, or staring in each other’s eyes, or clasping hands sitting next to each other. It’s not that one style is better than another (i.e., grandiose versus small, dramatic versus prosaic), but that it feels that this relationship is maturing before our very eyes, and it feels appropriate to where they are: feelings confirmed, hearts on the same page, finding joy purely in each other’s presence.

It’s probably that element that made me think over the course of the episode that these two are so well-matched that it feels like their bond transcends romantic feelings; it’s not a romance that feels driven by chemistry, though they certainly have that too. But they provide such emotional support for each other that it feels like such a crying shame that they can’t marry and live normal, happy lives together—at least, not within the framework of their world and their positions. They make each other better people, and her influence on him reminds me of his mother’s influence—urging him to see things through the eyes of people less privileged, to consider everybody and not those in higher, louder, harder-to-ignore positions. I get the sense that Yeong is growing as a person through his love for Ra-on, and not in the sense that he only does good things to benefit her. Rather, it feels like his love for her is spurring him to see the world differently and find ways to improve it

I love that line at the end, when he wishes for a nation that allows children to be children, and women to be women—essentially, that doesn’t punish you for being born the way you were, that doesn’t take the deck that’s been stacked against you and then smother you with it. And it was a lovely way to draw the parallel with the lantern girl, who gets her wish at the same time that Ra-on gets hers. (I’d previously thought it odd that they should hide his prince status all this time, but it was worth the delayed gratification when the girl met him as the prince today and got to make her wish for a better country.)

How sweet is it that Yeong is the one who enables both, and it tickles my fancy for a couple reasons. One, it’s just plain touching that he had a hand in two very important wishes, but also, they tie into loftier ideals about making a better nation. Through them, he’s living out his mother’s wishes that he see every citizen as equally precious, and that nobody ought to be overlooked or neglected. He’s living by example, not just spouting ideals the way the politicians do, twisting them for their own benefit.

Most of all, I especially like that this takes a nebulous concept of wishing on a lantern (which is to say, a fantasy) and puts Yeong in the driver’s seat, once again making him the author of his own fate. Last week he refused to accept the sad fairy tale and declared that he would write his own happy ending, and today he enabled two wishes with his own actions. (The drama doesn’t tell us how he found Mom, and I suspect we’ll find out tomorrow exactly how, but I think it’s fair to guess that he saw her at Teacher Dasan’s and put some pieces together.)

It’s this idea that I’m clinging to as the royal wedding approaches—that Yeong will assert his will and find a way to change his fate. I’m not sure it’s possible to avoid a wedding altogether, but I’m still holding out a huge hope that the drama will find a way to give us a satisfying resolution anyway; as of right now I have no clue how that’ll happen, and if it doesn’t succeed it might just crush me, but I’ve trusted this drama with my heart this far and I’ve been okay, so I’ll just trust it a little longer. If nothing else, the drama has proven time and time again that Yeong can outwit his opponents even when backed in a corner, as he did with the queen—admittedly I was nervous that he overplayed his hand, but you could argue that his skill includes reading his opponents and making appropriate calculations based on their reactions. Just… don’t fail me now! You can’t! You won’t! I won’t let you.

FLY. HURTLE. ASCEND.

Fly to Jupiter and Mars!

This show is like paradise. To me, this show is to historical-fushion-rom-com what Signal is to mystery thrillers and what Misaeng and Age of Youth are to slice-of-life dramas.

Two articles in major Korean dailies refer to MDBC's success as a "surprise" or as "unexpected". Here is my response:

"Moonlight Drawn By the Clouds"

"This underdog David of a drama sent shockwaves to its Goliath foes...

It caught everyone by surprise...

It was the unexpected...

It beat all the odds...

With the slingshot of stellar acting, mindblowing chemistry, solid, cohesive script, brilliant directing, cinematography, and musical scoring...

The David-Goliath story repeats itself."

I love this drama too, and it's joy indeed.
But now I am really really concerned. The manwha author's interview taught me that Prince Hyomyeong actually had existed. Then wiki taught me bad news.

So what's next? How can the sow handle History?
I fear I will be robbed of all the joy the show brings to me very soon.

In ep 1 or 2 the face reader said, that the prince was destined to die early and that Yoon-Sung would make a great king... So having the historical facts in mind the ending is either already set in stone or they are going to fake his death so he can live on happily ever after with Ra On. But do we really believe the prince will turn his back on his duties?

I remember the face reader. But i thought it's was superstition. And mainly I thought the prince had never existed to begin with.
Why choose him writternim? Such a bizarre idea when there are so many unknown princes from multiple concubines in Goryo and Joseon.

And like you I don't believe he will quit being a prince so...

I am seriously thinking to pause the show until the end, not ready for tragedy.

To be frank, Prince Hyomyeong's story isn't necessarily a unique case.

"Such a bizarre idea when there are so many unknown princes from multiple concubines in Goryo and Joseon."

True, but many of them died young as well. A lot of times, for a kingdom that has multiple male children among royalty... You hear about who ascends the throne and nothing of the king's siblings. This could mean one of two things: the king or the court wiped out any potential competition or the princes lived in exile (if they survived childhood illnesses).

"The manwha author’s interview taught me that Prince Hyomyeong actually had existed. Then wiki taught me bad news. So what’s next? How can the show handle history?"

What we know: Crown Prince Hyomyeong died before he officially became king, leaving behind a small son with Queen Hayeon (Sinjeong).
What we don't know: how did he die?

My grasp on Korean isn't strong enough to translate any direct sources, but to die at such a young age without a cited reason implies political motivations of the Kim clan. His son Heonjeong ascended the throne at 8 and died at 21. The Andong Kims had total control by then.

Drama-wise, the show might address this by abdicating Yeong for Yoonsung (or find a way to fake Yeong's death), since it sort of fits how history went in that a distant relation took Heonjeong's place after his death (Yoonsung is Yeong's... step-cousin, iirc). *Sigh* so confusing. I honestly wouldn't be upset if the story didn't follow history in the overly strict sense cause it just raises more questions than answers (technically, it's already going against history, cause the real Yeong would already be married and his child born cause he's 19).

And history-wise, Yeong would belong to the Kim clan since his mother is supposed to be Queen Sunwon, the one and only Queen consort of King Sunjo. So in that sense, they swapped Yeong's mother as well. And Yoon-sung technically took Yeong's place as Ministry Kim's grandson. I read on baidu that rumor has it Yeong was trying to control Andong Kim clan's power by using the influence of his wife's Pungyang Jo clan, so the Andong Kim clan retaliated by poisoning him.

The tone of this episode is more subdued unlike the previous ones. We didn't get to see YeongOn be super cute and sweet like before. There's no action. I guess you can say that nothing big happened at first glance, but if you look into the story, things are moving along at a steady pace. It's just like what JB pointed out.

Why did we think that her mom was dead? Nice touch Show. Thankgoodness there's no Truck of Doom when Ra On met her mom.

I know we should talk about this episode, but I just can't get the preview for tonight's episode out of my head.

The music in this Show again is just PERFECT! Every beat just makes you feel so involved!

Basically, truck of doom's royal ancestor. If Truck of Doom held his reputation for so long, and appears in so many dramas, you just know that he had to be chaebol. Because ordinary people aren't stuff of korean dramas.

Truck of Doom is probably a troubled 13th generation chaebol, descended from other financially successful vehicles of doom, who suffers from ego issues from being involved in Every Makjang Drama Ever since saeguk times.

Oh and the occasional existential crisis during well-written dramas that get by without (gasp!) ever using that trope. ?

I did not expect her to make a reappearance too. We were not told if she died, but I may have subconsciously wrote her off because I didn't think her reappearance would help the story. It was a lovely bit of surprise. I, however, agree with Teacher Dasan that reuniting Mom and Ra-on will not help YeongOn. However, it is nice for Ra-on to finally have Mom by her side.

Required fields are marked *

I think it's a nice touch that Teacher Dasan didn't straightforwardly reveal about Ra-on's mother, because it shows that he was considering for Yeong's sake as well. Don't you just love it when the crown prince is showered with love by the people around him? It warms my heart to think they DO support him as the crown prince.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah because we learned in the latter part that Yeong already told Teacher Dasan that the woman he loves is Ra-on.

It's nice to see that there are people who support Yeong. However, I can't help but sometimes feel that he is alone in his battles even if Ra-on, Teacher Dasan, and Hoon are there. Maybe it is because the Kims are far too many and powerful and Yeong is still in the dark about the rebellion groups and how some have infiltrated the palace. Heck! His own very close friend is, strictly speaking, not on his side and I don't know up until when Kim Hyung can keep on being on his side. I can really feel the weight of what's to come for Yeong as a Crown Prince.

0

I was talking about how Teacher Dasan didn't reveal to Ra-on about her mother, meaning he did consider in his head how this would affect Yeong even if he didn't know then Ra-on was the girl he was talking about, though I think he did suspect it. Initially I felt that Yeong is alone in his battle as well, but now that I'm seeing how everyone reacts to Yeong, I'm thinking he has all the emotional support he needs, heck even Kim Hyung has his best interest at heart when he told Yoon-sung to keep his affection for Ra-on in his heart (meaning shut it).

0

I believe in Kim Hyung but that preview .... Huhuhu

Well, I assumed she died as well, because the show made no effort to mention about her other than Ra-on's been searching for her high and low.

Thanks Javabeans for the great recap. I love the snarky comments/nicknames you threw out. Mr Cryptic smarty pants and master of sabotage! Hehe.

But I need to ask- So does the Prince know Ra On's real identity, meaning who her dad is? Did Master Yoda, I mean Master Jung tell him? That's why Master Jung said who Ra On needs isn't Prince Yeong, meaning she needs her mother. Which is why there is so much angsty foreshadowing I guess?

But regardless I'm so happy Master Jung is on the Prince's and Ra On's side. And the continue to make the Prince so Darn Perfect. Urgh.

I don't know what Eunuch Han's game plan is- is he good or bad? Why is he manipulating Byung Yeon?! For that actually he should be classified as Pure Evil- Be gone you corrupter of Puppy Byung! Don't be swayed Byung Yeon- the Prince and Ra On need you!

Also, I admit to having done an embarrassing fist pump of relief and vindictive joy when Queen mother was outmaneuvered. ?

Anyway fortunately there were the cute moments in between to bring some relief between the more exciting scenes. And since we are heading into angst-ville I decided to gif those scenes.

Gifs coming up soon!

Eunuch Han just seems very disillusioned, not really a bad guy. If one has seen THREE kings come and go and they've all failed him despite his hopes, I don't wonder how he doesn't see how Yeong can be any different.

Yeong hasn't actually implemented anything big in court or the country's affairs and while WE know that he's VERY capable and shrewd, Eunuch Han just sees another soon-to-be-extinguished bright spark in the Crown Prince. I can't fault him, actually, when he's right next to the king everyday, watching the King snivel in fear and indecision.

I can't help but wonder if Yeong will ever bark at his father for going against his promise of being a reliable dad to him when he needs him. Because from what I've been seeing, King has been throwing Yeong under the bus since the next day he made that promise.

I agree. Him of all people saw how the Kings were. However, surely he also knows that the one sitting on the throne is not to be blamed for everything given that the royal court is filled with the Kim clan who only wanted to stay in power for as long as they can. If he wishes to remove an incompetent King, then do so. However, he should also root out the problem with the Kim's rule of the royal court. Then again, he said that Joseon will not prosper under the rule of the Lee family, so it makes me wonder who he has in mind to rule? He can't be on the side of the Kims. The Kims have long made the people suffer with their corruption. For now, I cannot read Eunuch Han just yet. His intentions may be noble, but I don't know about his means.

THIS. I think Eunuch Han doesn't have anything against Yeong, personally. It's just that the Lees have failed in ruling Joseon or have met a bad end, judging from the kings he'd served.

Sunjo, Yeong's dad, is shown here as a failure of a king (and he was pretty weak in real life as well). He'd started with good intentions but was beaten into submission by the Andong Kims.

Jeongjo, Sunjo's dad, was by most accounts a visionary king who died under suspicious circumstances (i.e., he was probably poisoned because he was only 48 and by all accounts in perfect health when he died). He's the king in Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Jeongjo's grandfather Yeongjo is generally considered a good king, but he's also that guy who ordered his son to climb into a rice chest on a hot summer day and stay there until he died. In Secret Door, he was portrayed as paranoid and bad-tempered. Eunuch Han was young then. I'd imagine witnessing something like that would leave a lasting impression.

Jeongjo (Yi-san) was one of the best king in Joseon for all those reasons and more.
His grandfather Yeongjo was a great king but his accomplishments seems to be overshadowed by Sado's death.
(It's recorded in the Annals that he left the palace (incognito) a lot to mingle with his people and find out what they need).

I wonder if the writer was thinking about him when she made Yeong a wandering prince. He is outside the palace a lot for a prince.

Yeah. He worries me somehow especially his comment on the 3 kings. If he really is, I pray that Kim-hyung and YS will be at the CP's side to fight against evil.

Eunuch Han was part of the rebellion that was led by Ra-on's father (10yrs ago). He said that Ra-on's father and him were good friends.
If Ra-on's father was a bad and evil guy then we can say the same for Eunuch Han.

Yeong hasn't make the connection yet that Hong Ra-on is the rebel leader Hong Gyeong-nae's daughter.

When I say evil, I guess I mean selfish and self serving like the Kims. Meaning Eunuch Han may be disillusioned, but he shouldn't do anything that will throw the whole country into anarchy/chaos in order to be not considered "evil".

For now I think he means well but I am worried he will overlook the fact that he could be helping Prince Yeong make a change and get rid of the Kims (or at least lessen their stronghold on power), in preference for "rebelling" just to shake things up because he doesnt like how useless the current King is.

0

I see your point. He may not be powerful but he has eyes in the palace and an army of rebels at his disposal.

I think I'd give him the benefit of the doubt because he supported the rebellion for the people and he knows very well how corrupted the government officials are.

I think Byung-yeon is conflicted right now. His father was executed for helping Ra-on's father and the rebels. He has every right to seek revenge but he sees goodness and hope in Yeong because he cares about the people.

Yeah he only fed them, but given the fact that these corrupt official would want to torture a little girl for treason, do you really expect any better of them? Im not surprised that they killed him for that alone.

0

Feeding them and giving them supplies means that he supports their cause. That's why he was executed.

0

Part of me was thinking, if Yeong had known Ra-on to be the rebel's daughter, he might delay Ra-on's reunion with her mother. But then he did ask Ra-on: “If, in a difficult moment, you must let something go… that must not be me. Can you promise me that?” That makes me think, could it be he knows?

I'm hoping that he knows, because it'd be cruel if he had reunited them, only to find out he had just made it more impossible for them to be together.

1

My thoughts too!!! If Teacher Dasan already said to Yeong that the reunion of Mom and Ra-on will not bring them happiness, Yeong may have asked for more information which led to Teacher Dasan helping him reunite Mom and Ra-on. I don't think Yeong found the mother all on his own. And those words about not letting go of him even in the most difficult situation, he probably knows about her past already...

Words cannot describe how in love I am with this drama in every aspect. I feel like when it's broken down the premise is simple but the quality of production, acting and everything all around from top to bottom just elevates it to a whole new level.

It's been a really long time since I've watched a drama I've loved so much because this drama has more heart and character in it than I've seen in quite a while. And honestly Yeong is the man we all need in our lives, someone who won't back down and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his dreams. There's just something about a character who's not willing to take no for an answer and just finds new ways to impress me that just captures my heart.

I think she already explained why she is partial to Yoonsung in her interview. She said that Yoonsung is such a pitiful, heart-wrenching character given that he's under his grandfather and he suffers from one-sided love. Therefore, she feels for him as a character.

0

Required fields are marked *

It's because he's the most pitiful character according to the original novel writer. Like his grandpa taught him how to smile properly not to show any other emotion kind of teaching him how to put on a show on his face. That's so sad.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Because she made him pitiful. He's probably the sacrificial lamb for Ra-on and Yeong to have a happy ending.

The fortune teller/ face reader or whatever he was in earlier episodes predicted that one would die early and the other would be a good king.
At the time, Yeong and Yoon-sung were switching clothes. Yoon-sung-sung was wearing the prince's clothes and Yeong was wearing Yoon-sung's.

I really think it means that Yoon-sung will be the one that will die young instead of Yeong. Kind of an interesting fate switch. I'd take that over switch at birth lol.

0

Required fields are marked *

It could mean that he would rule as regent with kingly authority or that he was honored and regarded as a king. He is also known as King Munjo in history.

0

I could accept it if he ruled as regent, but if he was to rule as king, it should have shown on the timeline, which didn't happen, even if they did honor him as King Munjo in history. But didn't they honor him as a king simply because his son ascended the throne? His son couldn't succeed as king without honoring his father as the king.

0

He would still ascend the throne because he was the only heir.
It took years for Yi-san to elevate his father's status to emperor. Yeong's son was very young when his father died. I think he had to go through the same process before his father was honored as king.

0

Whoa! Really??!! They were wearing each other's clothes? Omo! And all this time, I saw it as somehow historically accurate for Yeong... I have to watch it again! OMG! This is a revelation! Damn, should I be paying attention to details such as clothes too on top of paying attention to every single little movements of PBG's micro-expression?

Thank you for pointing out that detail.

Required fields are marked *

Is this true? Because god knows how many times I repeated that scene to make sure that they are who they are but I was pretty sure they we wearing exactly what the face reader mentioned. Or maybe the face reading happened before they switched clothes, we have no way of knowing the order of events based on the short flashback.

0

Thank you! I went back and re-watch it many times and you are right, I'm the one who made a mistake. I thought they switched headgear sorry guys.
No It's not possible for CP to give YS his throne.

I think I'm trying too hard to figure out a way for Yeong and Ra-on to have a happy ending lol.

I still think the record will say that Yeong died. That would be the only way for him to leave the palace and live with Ra-on.
Yoon-sung has the face of a king but that's it. He didn't say he will become a king or live a long life.

0

@kiara

oh Im sad again. haha.

But can I ask, since if I'm not wrong you are well versed on Saeguks (from the OT thread)- Is the Prince always supposed to dress different from YS and BY? As in I am just wondering if there was a reason why was Yoon Sung wearing the whole elaborate head gear? Or is it that the head gear and outfit is not very important, in that any one can wear it and it doesnt mean anything.
Because people can tell Prince Yeong is the Crown Prince from his attire now, (which is why he changes out when he is going about incognito) so I am wondering if that would be the case last time as well.

0

@michykdrama Well, I could be wrong but I think they wore the headpiece because they were students (I noticed the Sungkyunkwan students were wearing similar headpiece?). As for the design, I think it's a symbol of higher social status. I'd assume everyone in the palace would recognize the crown prince based on his face alone. But people on the streets wouldn't, so he could just have a change of clothes and go incognito.

0

Don't be sad girls. This show is too light hearted to end tragically.

I just hope they are not going to do those alternate endings or open ending. It doesn't need to be complicated.

They do have chemistry and they have the same love plight. I hope they find comfort and love with each other.

This is show which will launch a thousand, no a million, scratch that, a billion female crushes on PBG.

Seriously, where can you find a guy that looks like that, is adorable like that, and is swoony like that? And is smart too? His character has just the right amount of self doubt to be endearing and avoid being too arrogant, and that broken past that makes you want to care for him and mother him.

Every episode they add on something that makes him even more perfect to me!

And you know whenever characters are Too Perfect, they aren't meant to be in this world for too long because they get called back to heaven to be Angels.

I'm in complete denial though. *continues to smile idiotically at her gifs, ignoring the metaphorical truck of angst and doom I feel is coming*

He really is the "It Guy" these days. Thank goodness he has great talent to go with his good looks, so no one can say that he only got popular because he's such a handsome young man. I became his fan because of his talent first. Well... he was still an adorkable kid when I first saw him act and not the manly dude he is now, so that could be why I did not notice much the handsome face. hihi

Aww that's nice! Yeah the other series where I loved this kind of exchange was in City Hall, when they were sketching out her hopeful plans for the town together.

I don't know how you do it when you gif, but this was another episode big on his little expressions - I was screenshotting the minute changes as they came along eg when he was flopped on the writing table (squishyface!) and in the scene with the queen (pokerface!).

Then when he helped the little lantern girl up and his face was lit just like that by the sun, he looked so regal in that - yet moments after that princely regalia made him look sad and forlorn as he approached Ra-on from behind (sadface :()

And of course especially in the sunset scene right before he reunites her with her mom the little changes in his hopeful, wistful looks just kill me as he acts with full awareness that he might be setting in motion a chain of actions that may not be advantageous to him but all he asks for in return are a simple promise (I normally don't pay much attention to episode titles, but I LOVE how this series calls back to them in multiple layers) - his empathy when it comes to her mom (every time PBG pines for his mom) it just kills me. Dead.

Yeah and Yeong asked her to wait for him until he makes the new Joseon. That was a wonderful scene. It shows that whatever happens from here on out, their love for each other stands. At least they have that understanding. I just don't know how Ra-on's identity as the daughter of Hong Leader will factor in. I'd like to believe that it will not affect their love for each other.

Kind of didn't like how helpless she was in front of the queen, but I guess there was nothing she could do with her status. Though it feels too common that every time she's in trouble the CP will have to help her time and time again.

She recovered a bit quickly from the incident with the queen though, I feel that she seemed so fine after that but I guess I shouldn't be one to judge.

On a side note, as a eunuch she seems to be mostly carrying books and in the royal library looking for books that the CP never seems to read :') just thought it was funny

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

To be fair, it's been established early on that eunuchs are especially vulnerable to the whims of the royals. Eunuch Sung gets literally thrown out by Yeong and everyone takes at as normal. I can't see how Ra-on can save herself when she's directly in their line of fire.

I'm not surprised Ra-on was able to recover from her confrontation with the Queen. This is the same girl who was almost (a) thrown into a dung/piss-filled pit by gangsters and (b) killed by the princess. She survived on the streets with only a somewhat undependable surrogate dad for company. She's lived a hard life. She's resilient.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

There's nothing she could do to save herself. And it will always be Yeong who will save her because, aside from Yeong will always want to keep her safe, she is part of the eunuchs who serve Yeong. The King, Queen, Prince etc. each has their own set of eunuchs and court ladies. Yeong is like Ra-on's boss and so he will look out for his people.

Required fields are marked *

I miss the street smart Ra-on from the first 2 eps. She was hilarious and resourceful. She is more of a damsel in distress inside the palace walls.

I think those books are records of the prince's daily activities etc that she is writing down. The historiographers were expected to do the same for the king.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

But I actually love the fact that Ra-on was so conscious of her status as eunuch in the palace, everytime she tried being bright and resourceful, she ended up causing trouble and I think that's why she was restraining herself, in order not to cause more trouble for Yeong. And she can't help being a damsel in distress anyway, palace servants are pretty much disposable, she had to rely on Yeong. That's what bf are for.

Required fields are marked *

Yea I get it that it's necessary for them to be close in order for their relationship to develop and she is expected to behave in a certain manner but still.
I guess that's why I'm not a fan of palace romance. It's suffocating to be at the lowest rank. The constant need to be rescued by someone with higher authority can get old pretty fast.
Does that even make any sense?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I get where you're coming from. If this was modern age drama, we'd be rolling our eyes from the heroine lack of self-reliance. Though I do agree that Yeong has been constantly saving Ra-on from danger, I do think that in some ways Yeong relied on Ra-on as well, other than the emotional comfort of having her by his side, she has proven useful for him when she saved the dance for him, find ways to proof the food wasn't poison and etc. So it wasn't just one-sided.

I just find comfort in that she's the more level-headed one, despite being the more emotional one, she's more cautious of prying eyes than Yeong, because everytime they sneaked around together, they get so close of giving me heart attack.

0

I miss EP 1-2 Raon as well. However, being her old spunky self will only get her in deeper trouble in the palace when as a eunuch you are expected to just follow. I am actually excited to see her exit the palace some time soon. She will be less conscious of her actions and be less anxious for her safety, but then she'd be anxious for Yeong's.

I just love JB's comments on this episode. I can only wish that I have the same talent in writing my thoughts in such wonderful, clear words. She echoed my feelings about this episode.

"it feels that this relationship is maturing before our very eyes"

Indeed. As much as I enjoyed the banters and fluff that have been showered to us in the past episodes, this right here is the beginning of what will test the relationship and show how much YeongOn has matured. What decisions will they make for their love?

"these two are so well-matched that it feels like their bond transcends romantic feelings... They make each other better people... his love for her is spurring him to see the world differently and find ways to improve it"

Indeed one of the things I truly love about YeongOn is that they complement each other, they learn from each other, and they depend on each other. One may be a Prince and the other a girl disguised as a eunuch, but these two never felt imbalanced in their relationship. They're so in-tune with each other that I never felt that one is pulling the weight more than the other. Sure Ra-on gets in trouble, but given her guise and her place in the palace, it's bound to keep on happening. In her own little ways, Ra-on is helping and saving Yeong as well. Her words have spurred him to action to do what is right many a times. How can we not root for these two? /cries

Oh and YeongOn is now the official name of OTP. Korean media and even their own crew/staff call them YeongOn. <3

“... these two never felt imbalanced in their relationship.”

Truthfully, I did feel that the difference in status (eunuch-king, Joseon woman-man) did affect my perception of their relationship at first. While it was easy to squee over Yeong during the earlier episodes, I personally found it a little less natural to root for YeongOn as a couple, especially when Yeong took the active-wooing stance while Ra-on struggled for about an episode or so. A relationship is built on reciprocity, after all!

But ever since Ra-on came to terms with her identity as a woman in love with Yeong and allowed that to shine through her (KYJ really sold the look of a woman in love this episode!), I can say that they've really become well-matched.

???

Now, let the angst begin! HAHA

Did you see how assertive she has been after coming into terms with her feeling? I feel like she loosen up a lot around Yeong too. She was practically giddy at the sight of Yeong and wasn't afraid to show it. I like that Yeong was the one doing the wooing, I feel like it's a gentleman way to do it, but I also like the way Ra-on reciprocate his gesture, not overly cheesy, but warm and gentle and giddy, just the way we would when we have our first loves.

It's amazing to see how CP managed to one-up himself in every single episode. For every conflict that he is presented with, he grows to be more mature thanks to the wise words of wisdom he gets from his mother and teacher Dasan.

I almost forgot that this is the same CP whom we were introduced to earlier in the show but I am thankful that the writer still retains the goofy side of him.

THIS
"...it feels that this relationship is maturing before our very eyes, and it feels appropriate to where they are: feelings confirmed, hearts on the same page, finding joy purely in each other’s presence."

and THIS
"I get the sense that Yeong is growing as a person through his love for Ra-on, and not in the sense that he only does good things to benefit her. Rather, it feels like his love for her is spurring him to see the world differently and find ways to improve it"

For a show that claims to be a youthful romance, I beg to differ. This should be reworded as youthful but mature romance, one that transcends any other romantic pairings out there who claim to make mature decisions for the sake of others but never considered how the others really felt. Okay, I should probably stop here here before I spurt out more nonsense.

Thanks JB!

It's very rare for a drama to make me care so much for the characters. This drama is defintely one of the rare ones.

There are many instances whereby I would watch a drama with an intensely gripping plot and while I do enjoy it very much but for some odd reason I can never connect to the characters on an emotional level at all.

But this one.

It's a pretty simple story but it made me feel SO MUCH for the characters. Its the type of story that touches on emotions. And I really like that.

"There are many instances whereby I would watch a drama with an intensely gripping plot and while I do enjoy it very much but for some odd reason I can never connect to the characters on an emotional level at all."

Yep. I felt this too very recently in the insane plot of W. I stuck with the show for its plot, but I did not connect with the characters and I was not sold with the romance.

I guess this only shows the vast range of drama offerings out there that we can choose from. There are those we watch for the plot and others for the characters.

Yeong is such a dream boat! Seriously, I love the way he loves Ra On. He knows what he wants. He anticipates her words and emotions and acts accordingly. And the same goes for her. So I'm pretty sure she'll marry Crown Prince in the end - after another 6 episodes of puppy angst and turmoil….

Here again in the middle of the night, as it is simply impossible to sleep without responding to Moonlight Moonday.

Our Yeong is growing more and more confident each episode that it makes me scared of just how crushed he might get once he finds out what happened to his mom. I'm not ready to find out myself, and I'm definitely not ready to watch him break. So I hope, I really do hope we get to have or see more people help him without a personal agenda. Like I maybe even want to see Ha-Yeon be a friend Yeong can trust. Eehhhh okay, I dunno, we'll see eh?
'Cause it looks like the broship with Yoon-Sung isn't sailing anytime soon. ?

The feet shots! They kill me every single time, and this time I just couldn't take Ra-On keeping it all together and then break down like that. I'm so happy she gets to have her mom back after all. I cried buckets. Do you guys think Yeong has been made aware of what Hong Ra-On's role is in all this? Teacher might have told him when he let RO find and meet mom because:

“If, in a difficult moment, you must let something go… that must not be me. Can you promise me that?”

I'll try not to think about that for now.

I love how this show is evolving. Using a play on words/silence, reality that the characters are in, and imagery that make it very poignant to us who are watching... all from the outside looking in.

Concealment in different forms are beautifully presented and uncovered with each episode. First, it was superficial... clothing and name changes. Then, we see a deeper, darker side as we learn about duty, family, ambition, and even fate and how all of these weigh down a person hiding something.

We see a shrewd king in the CP which is why the king has been left flailing and always taunting his own incapacity as his main disability.

The gambit that the prince takes is spurred on by the love he has received from his mother, the advice of Teacher Dasan and his and Ra-on's feelings for each other.

I personally think that the CP's underlying motive of decapitating the Kim clan is still utmost and the only question now, with the power struggle is that who will draw first blood.

I think the CP has started with the release of the little lantern girl. I just hope Eunuch Han was able to see that.

It is but natural to wish our heroes (and heroine) come out unscathed but then ... to let them win this early would be just like pulling the plug on this riveting drama. So, I happily settle in to look forward to the next episode... and the next... and the next...

Cheers, beanies!

Me too! I like how this show employs parallelism in the story lines tied with the episode's theme. In addition, the use of imagery and play on words are nice touches too. It shows the attention to details. I almost forgot about the wishes tbh. I thought it served its purpose in the episode about wishes, but here it is again nicely tied to the story and character development.

Im sure the plan was for Master Jung to adopt Raon, but letting Raon reunite with her mother, that plan is trashed.
And when he asked her not to let go of him no matter what, I feel forboding future, maybe he has to marry Ha yeon, set the country straight, then come to raon? That ehy he asked he to wait no matter how long it takes and how hurtful it is to wait? To be the first person in his new Joseon

+1 My favourite kind of drama conflict is when two people reasonably cannot be together and unknowingly worsen those chances. The anticipation for how they will be written out of that impossibility and feeling catharsis from the wrap-up is always the best haha.

It's sad but heartwarming that LY tells RO to wait for him. They have so much faith in their love for one another. :) If RO does have to wait, I hope it's not for a long time, otherwise it would be too tragic if they reunite years down the track. Plus, I don't think this is that type of drama.

Me too. I think it fit the scene with that wonderful sky. I'm not a big fan of his bright colored clothes though. PBG manages to rock them still (and the hanbok designer raved about him in traditional clothes), but I prefer darker tones. My fave is the maroon one he wore when he rescued Ra-on from the Qing envoy.

YES! The Queen rocks being evil! I dread seeing her onscreen because she is that good at being evil. On the other hand, I love seeing her because she has a commanding presence, especially when she is being evil like in this episode. I was so anxious the whole time when she wanted to reveal Ra-on. That scene is one of my faves. I just love the mind games that went between her and Yeong. I do agree with JB that Yeong played it a bit too far this time and it could have ended badly, but he was very calculating.

I was on pins and needles whenever she's on screen /shivers/ especially since Ra-on is understandably helpless in front of her. I was worried that Yeong's expression will betray him. Thank goodness he was able to hold it in the entire time.

That showdown was one of the best moments of the show!! My heart was pounding like I'd just watched a mad action scene straight outta The K2!

The queen gives me chills. She was so pantingly eager to get her claws into Ra-On that I half expected her to sprout fangs and go all red-eyed. Since she's pretending that she's pregnant with a royal son when she's really carrying a baby girl, I pity the girl and the poor surrogate pregnant court lady who's going to come to no good end at the hands of the scheming queen!

Required fields are marked *

This show is not only good with the ending, it's good with the preview as well. I was so convinced on the last preview that Ra-on's identity will be uncovered and she'd face death sentence, I was raking my brain thinking how Yeong would've gotten her out of the situation. And I was apprehended thinking today's episode might end up in a tragic way.

When Yeong was confronting the queen, I was silently screaming, "Don't challenge her!" It was a battle of outwitting each other, and I was so relieved when eunuch Han came to the rescue. But that hasn't change my opinion him, today's episode just confirms that the rebels have no intention on forming alliance with Yeong, they wanted to dethrone the monarch, and I'm totally okay with that development. I love how this show always exceed my expectations yet moving along on the path that I wish it'd taken. I, for one, don't want Yeong to form an alliance with the rebels, it would be so out of character and such a big betrayal for Yeong's father. I get that the king's weak but based on their interactions thus far, I truly believe that Yeong loves his father and would seek out his best interest as well as ruling with his people's best interest in mind. And an alliance with the rebel wouldn't be much different with an alliance with the Kim clan, essentially he'd have to rely on their power, I wanted Yeong to rule the nation with his chosen people by his side, just like what he said to Ra-on: “Until I make that kind of nation for you—can you wait? In the new Joseon that I make, you will be my first person.”

I don't think there ever was a moment where I was not moved by whatever Yeong said, everything that comes out of his mouth seems so wise and mature for his age and it makes me want to believe in him and his happy ending. I was particularly moved when he told Ra-on:“When you like someone, is it not natural to be greedy for more?” Heck yeah, be totally greedy, be so greedy that everyone literally have to wish for your happiness, be so so so greedy that you DO get your happy ending. I'm so happy that we have a hero worth rooting for. Because he's not a pushover, know exactly what he wants and actually go for it.

I think if the knowledge of the history didn't ruin it for us, we'd probably be heading forward with a much carefree attitude, but I want to believe that it's a happy ending for our couple. I can't bear to see them apart. I do agree that more than the romance itself, these two complete each other and spur each other into maturity, beyond that, it's their trust in each other that makes it particularly moving. And I like the fact that Yeong finds mother's influence in Ra-on, and she's the best support there is for him, even just the look of her gives him Ra-on (joy).

Required fields are marked *

Ok, apparently I wrote too long and need a second paragraph.

And how sweet is that they dread so much being apart! Sending each other home back and forth! Dawwww. If I was Ra-on, I wouldn't want the crown prince to go home at all. Rawr. It's a shame Yoo-jung is a minor, because there are a few scenes where I wish they'd make kissy faces. The "I've got my dots on you" scene set the right mood just for that! Gah.

On a side note, I think Beige's "Because I Miss You" song came out kinda late, because the feels are totally gone and I wasn't as excited for it as I was in the beginning. But I do understand why they chose to release it now. Previously I thought this was a theme song for YeongOn, but now that I think about it, it's actually a theme song for their longing for their mothers. It was played during the dance scene where Yeong was reminiscing his mother, and today it's used on Ra-on union with her mother. Gah, so many poignant moments. This is why I love this show so much, they balance out everything so perfectly.

I love that scene when Yeong put the dot on Ra-on. The laugh that PBG let out after putting the dot on KYJ was real and evil! lol I kept on replaying and I swear it seems like PBG wanted to laugh some more. And when he said flat out poker face "it comes from my heart" I died of laughter.

While I think KYJ is perfect as Ra-on, I admit that I find it such a shame as well that we will not be getting some more in the scenes between YeongOn because she's only 18 yrs old (Korean age).

I loved that scene too, where crown prince said that this is not enough for him and he wants more. I think the biggest plus in their relationship is that they have no miscommunication. They both tell each other how they feel and what they want directly. It just goes to say how strong relationships can be if we have good communication.

that Ra On is the rebel leader's daughter. Right before reuniting her with her mum, Yeong asked Ra On to promise him that when faced with obstacle, she would not give up on him. I think that obstacle will be Ra On's mom and the Prince knows that their families' twisted fate will not make it easy for him and Ra On to be together. As teacher Dasan pointed out, if Ra On and her mum reunites, then it would make things more difficult for Yeong but Yeong's desire to make Ra On happy came before any selfish desire. He really loves her!

Dear Moonlovers,

I appreciate your opinion, I sincerely do. However on a thread that was purely positive and not putting down other dramas I see no need for that sort of negativity. Perhaps you could express your thoughts in a manner that would simply praise Moonlovers instead of putting down Moonlight.
And you aren't the only one, I've seen many people that have the same opinion as you do. But the problem is, an opinion is no longer simply an opinion when you begin to make other people feel as if their opinions aren't sufficient and that your opinion is the only one that matters. I'm not necessarily saying you're doing this, but it's something that I've come across and leads me to feel as if my joy of reading recaps has become spoiled. So please, for the sake of a kind and supportive atmosphere, be positive!

Though congratulations on the high ratings, it must be nice to love a drama that gets high ratings, I have yet to experience that. I thought that description itself was so random. I'm actually proud of us Moonlighters for being mature about it and not feeding more fuel to the fire. I personally love both Moon dramas so I don't get the hate but the comment did went a bit overboard. Hence that probably explains why Javabeans deleted it. No one likes their mood to be ruined right? :)

Yes, I do hope that everyone remains level headed and does not do anything silly like try and argue back or go over to the Moonlovers thread.

So if you don't read the recap, why comment and be so negative just because this drama is getting good ratings? I personally happen to like both dramas and am honestly kinda bummed, too, that Moonlovers isn't doing better in the ratings games. They're both different, even though they share the same genre of being sagueks, and they both have their pros and cons. We should all learn to enjoy the dramas that we like, and be happy for others' successes, not be so angry and annoyed. Everyone has their own opinions and likes and dislikes - we all can't like the same things. If we did, everything would be vanilla. Enjoy and appreciate them all! =))

tbh I didn't like PBG before I saw his acting, it's after IRY that I get how different and subtle he is as an actor I'll root, but I always liked KHN in everything, and I watch his variety show and he really deserves the praise if he is getting any,

so, as people who like to comment on Moonlight and seems like to criticise ML in another post, I actually really care about moonlight cause I loved BBJX and KHN, so I definitely not happy with the way ML is but they (the producer and crew ) need a wake-up call that a good drama needs to have balance or goodness in most if the things they presented than just grand view on actor or visual,
a product will get judge because of the product's quality for people not who endorse it or only the fans comment,

You can choose to pour your love in the other drama's comment section instead of coming here to ruin the mood! let's say park bo gum DID DRAW people to watch mdbc, don't you think moon lovers should have at least the EQUAL if not MORE power to attract people with that many stars it had? please go check those articles in early 2016 when they announced MDBC and ML, many of the netizens said that MDBC is doomed because it have to face ML with so many beautiful faces in it plus story that has already proven credible for the audience (bbjx)....

Goes to show how the cookie crumbles, eh? Star power alone does not make a successful product if the initial impression is a bad one. First impressions are lasting and hard to shake. Both of these dramas are fusion-sageuk/young-adult sageuk based on pre-existing works with popular actors and crew so no one can say that the ratings game is rigged...

I have no opinion on Moon Lovers, so... no comment. I don't watch it and reading recaps in hopes of gleaning interest simply hasn't given me that 'spark' or urge to tune in for the long run.

That said... Moonlight doesn't revolutionize anything (if anything, it's like Coffee Prince: the sageuk), but they took a premise we already knew and made it feel refreshing to watch with gripping characters, well done pacing, well done acting, gorgeous cinematography, and not failing to tie loose ends...

Who would have thought something as simple as a little girl selling lanterns would make its way back to being involved in a treasonous series of cases? Who would have thought Eunuch Sageuk Plastic Surgeon with the poison acupuncture would wind up being helpful, knowing how poison reacts? The child gets her wish to meet the king (or at least Crown Prince). Raon's mother is found... and as a bonus, Teacher Dasan - who always seemed to be iffy as far as his role beyond Yeong's confidante - is actually Raon's grandfather! No wonder she's so good at giving advice. It's a good work that knows how to integrate all characters into the fold so that they don't feel completely like one-offs without significance... That's hard to do.

I do watch Moon Lovers, but I'm not gonna draw comparison here.

Moonlight doesn't premise on revolutionary anyway, it's all the too familiar setup and setting, maybe Sungkyunkwan Scandal much? But I do appreciate that we're given meaty stuff despite being promised rom-com. I just can't stop singing praises how much this show wow me. The way they connect dots between one story to another, layering their emotions on top of another, slipping in the themes unnoticed, and nailing the imagery and all, I'm just speechless everytime I watch a new episode. Aside from the last scenes, I liked how:
-- Yeong was just being himself in front of Ra-On: all slumped over his desk like a guy after a long hard day at work,
-- how Yeong seems afraid of Ra-On after jokingly painting a dot on her front head: like if his girlfriend was going to nag at him...

I will espouse Teacher Dasan's winning strategy of "killing your enemies not with HATE but with HONEY".

I will offer the "HONEY" of a "POWERFUL, COMPELLING STORY".

I don't even venture to comment on the other drama because I have not watched it and I cannot judge something I have not watched carefully.

If one has watched MDBC episode by episode and comes out of the experience saying that she doesn't like it, then well and good. "Different Strokes for Different Folks."

But if one has not watched and makes these judgments based on others who also have not watched and are just sour-graping, then the assertions have no logical basis.

After carefully watching each episode I saw that although it has included the cliche trope of a cross-dressing eunuch...the principal plot is about the profound friendship and love between a Prince who struggles between a hapless King-Father who couldn't avenge the mysterious death of his Queen---the Prince's mother--- and institute improvements in Joseon, and the sinister politics that tend to paralyze every effort of the King to reform the nation AND a young woman thrown into a painful circumstance of having to disguise herself as a boy, then a young man---hence, the crossing eunuch sub-plot---because it turns out that she was the daughter of the rebel leader and that affiliation forced the mother to disguised her as a boy to save her life.

The sub-plot as far as the Prince is concerned involves outwitting and subverting the evil machinations of Premier Kim and his minions and protecting and consummating his love for Raon. As far as Raon is concerned, it's rediscovering her identity as a woman and living as such with dignity, and strongly holding fast to her love for Lee Young.

With a plot like this, who in her right mind would say that MDBC is a "fluff" or "plotless"?

Nice essay, you have here. :) The power is in the story-telling and delivery. And I can only hope that MDBC continues to do so until the end. I always have this feeling that things will take a wrong turn even at the very last moment of the final episode. 2. Master Jung wishes to see the Princess again. It came true because now he can see the Princess since he is in the Palace.
3. The little girl wishes came true today when she met Young and he told her to watch and see if he make make Joseon a bett nation.

This is awesome! The writer really doesn't waste a scene. And poor YS is always too late lol.

This is so lovely! Your comment needs to be read with heart eyes!

So, do we think Yeong will become king in the show then? Since the little girl's wish is to meet the King, not the Regent Prince... I sure hope so!

Despite shipping the OTP, my fave character in this drama is actually YS. Perhaps his situation has made me sympathizing with him. He loves RO, he wants to be best friends again with CP, and he wants to be close with KY ... but none would reciprocate his feeling. Too bad he was born in the wrong clan, because he's a good man born in a corrupt surrounding.

I don't know why, I just can't for the life of me feel for him. I mean it's a pity that he's vying for Ra-on affection, as well as Yeong and Kim Hyung, but to be honest, he didn't do anything to deserve Ra-on's affection (he did cover for her, but that's out of HIS affection for her, she never in any way gave him hope), as for Yeong and Kim Hyung, it's just his sad fate to be born into the Kim clan.

Fate? what fate? Being born a Kim? Having the PM as his grandfather? He should take a leaf outta Yeong's book... and not allow circumstances to determine his destiny.

For instance, at the civil exam, he could have done something. He did tell Yeong that he was going to, but he didn't.

He's no the Yoon Sung I liked in the earlier eps.

He certainly didn't stop trying to be their friends, but he can't help it if Yeong keep him at arm's length. I was bothered by the exam thing as well, he knew they were corrupt and cheating, but he didn't do anything to stop them until Yeong came along and changed the question.

I feel bad for him. Even if he tried multiple times to assert his loyalty for his friend in front of his corrupt family, Crown Prince and Kim Hyung still won't get close to him. He never dropped their friendship and still he's branded as part of Team Evil by his blood ties alone. :(

Enjoy! ❤

You know what, I want a sad ending for this one. But I'm sure KBS won't do that.

Well if they are staying true to the web novel then I'm highly positive there won't be a sad ending. I mean this drama was advertised as a fusion saeguk romcom. It's refreshing, fun and has a lot of heart....it would be out of place for it to have a sad ending. Even Bogummy said not to worry about the ending :)

" Even Bogummy said not to worry about the ending "

OMG Did he really??!! When? I need assurance of at least a happy ending. I don't mind hardships and all problems they want to throw at OTP, but give them a happy ending.

If they decide to go for sad ending, then they risk the hate of the entire Korean population. The viewers fell in love with YeongOn so much that they hate seeing them sad and apart. The writer should know better than to bring on the pitch forks locally and internationally. hihihi! I do agree that a sad ending is rather inconsistent to the overall feel of the show.

@Celine and maryxiah

I read it on an article/comment posted on Soompi (it had a link to the source). Now I went back and couldn't find it since the threads moved so fast and that comment is lost somewhere there. But yeah I remember reading it, unless my eyes (and memories) were wrong haha :)

in the promotions, kbs promoted this as a light-hearted drama. i doubt there would be a sad ending too

In any other drama with similar narrative circumstances, I'd think a sad ending would be appropriate too. But the light tone MDBC has set would make a sad ending inconsistent with the fluffiness and light angst on which the show's popularity has been established.

if the protagonist is 5 years older than what we have, I may thought they'll did it but with all the love and the tone, sad ending will be the opposite of the show premises
