Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 8
by HeadsNo2
Now it feels like we’ve finally dispensed with the setup to get to the actual meat of the character interactions, which is a definite plus in my book. Even if everything in this hour revolves around a newly introduced (and swiftly resolved) problem, it at least gives our heroine more opportunities to form new alliances, or to strengthen the ones she already has. One thing’s for sure—her makeup brings all the boys to the yard.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Continuing straight from where we left off last week, So demands that Su look at his scarred face properly. He tells her how he hates that look she gave him, and adds that he doesn’t ever want to see it from her again.
Confused, Su asks him what look he’s talking about. Growing angrier, So claims that it’s a look of pity, and he doesn’t need her, of all people, to feel sorry for him. As he slowly loosens his grip on her wrist, he leaves her with a warning: “Stay out of my sight. Next time… I don’t know what I’ll do to you.”
Su is left to lean against the same column for support after he leaves, looking more than a little dazed and concerned by their encounter.
That night, So is back to wearing his mask as he lies under the stars in Astronomer Choi’s tower. Thirteenth prince Baek-ah finds his older brother in much more agreeable spirits as he apologizes for not putting a stop to the unmasking earlier. For the record, he also adds that errant tenth prince Eun regrets what he did.
So mentions that Baek-ah didn’t look at him when he unmasked himself, and Baek-ah replies that he was worried it would upset So if he did. So sighs that feelings are so fickle—he can be mad at one person for looking, and one person for not looking. Yeah, tell us about it.
At least Baek-ah stands up for Su, who he says was just manipulated by the much-eyeliner’d third prince Yo. So cuts him off, not wanting to hear any more about Su.
Along with Court Lady Oh, Su attends to the king’s morning routine, which includes a light smattering of cosmetics. He backhandedly reminds Su of her place when it comes to the princes, who she admits she hasn’t seen much of lately, before Court Lady Oh coifs the king’s hair into a topknot.
Queen Sinmyeongsunseong intervenes in this process, demanding that the court lady allow her to do the tending. She’s offended by the simple wooden pin Court Lady Oh was to use to secure the topknot, until King Taejo informs the queen that he’s dressing simply to reflect the drought their nation is suffering.
In keeping with that theme, all the princes enjoy the personalized tea Su serves them—well, all except for So, who admonishes her for serving tea when there’s such a drought going on.
Su takes Baek-ah aside afterward to make sure he didn’t make a mistake in telling her all of So’s favorite things to eat and drink. It’s funny when Baek-ah comments that he had to give her everyone’s favorites so it would be less obvious that she was catering specifically to So, which is why it upsets her that So rejected her offer.
She’s frustrated that So seems to only be angry with her, which even Baek-ah confirms—he forgave Eun right away, so why is he still so sore at Su? Baek-ah has a suspicion, but Su tries to bow out before the other court ladies see them.
Unfortunately, Baek-ah intentionally doesn’t let her go, which only makes things look worse. Su is punished by the other girls and by Court Lady Oh, who warns her to stay away from the princes and out of trouble.
Soon-deok, Grand General park’s daughter, finally works up the courage to face tenth prince Eun directly. Her stuttering problem prevents her from getting her thoughts out properly, and Eun is doubly unhelpful, his only concern being that the drought has left him with nothing to do.
But she has a solution to his boredom, and takes him to a spot where she’s set a trap. Eun is too impatient to wait, but Soon-deok pulls him down when she sees a bird approach the trap. The fact that she gets to hold Eun’s hand, however inadvertently, makes her break out into a wide grin.
They wait for the right opportunity to spring the trap, and Eun couldn’t be more excited that they’ll get to eat it… at least until Soon-deok breaks the bird’s neck. Disgusted, he calls her a murderer and leaves, and poor, clueless Soon-deok is left to wonder if he was upset because he wanted to eat the bird alive. Hah.
Her father watches the display and tsks from a distance, eventually sitting down with his daughter to cook the bite-sized bird. It’s adorable how he tries to attack Eun’s lack of manliness to make his daughter feel better: “What kind of man can’t even catch a bird?” Soon-deok: “I can catch them.” Grand General Park: “Then… how can he protect his wife and children!” Soon-deok: “I can protect us.”
It’s both funny and sad that Soon-deok has accounted for all these possibilities in her mind, though we’re not let in on the whole story between her and Eun. It seems like her father knows that she’s leaning toward Eun, and has given up on dissuading her.
Eighth prince Wook heads over to Damiwon, presumably to see Su, but he finds the doors barred with a note that since the palace will be holding a ritual to bring rain, all outside access will be blocked. Later that night, Su finds a note near her bedside, and is just barely able to make out the Hanja characters to realize that Wook wants to meet her in the secret entrance to the baths.
She grins from ear to ear when she finds him there, and he admits that Chae-ryung told him of the location when he expressed his frustration at being unable to see Su. Aw.
Sitting in the dark cave, Wook remarks on how easy it would be for her to use the tunnel to escape the palace. Su knows this well, but tells him how So told her that there would be no way for her to truly escape the king. Since Damiwon suits her well, she says she’d rather wait until she can leave the palace with the king’s blessing.
“Until then… could you… not forget me?” she asks hesitantly. By way of reply, Wook tells her that if the upcoming rain ritual produces rain, the king will be apt to grant favors accordingly. He’ll request that the king free her from her service, which causes Su’s face to light up from within at the thought of being able to return to his house.
Wook smiles broadly as he says that when she does return, he’ll buy everything she’ll need to make soap, and fill the house with all her favorite supplies. Su jokes that Princess Yeonhwa would hate that, but adds quietly, “I desperately hope it will rain. It has to.” Wook agrees.
She closes her eyes as she rests her head on his shoulder, and Wook can only smile as he holds her hand and leans in closer.
Su helps treat Crown Prince Mu’s condition before he heads off to quell a rebellion caused by the ongoing drought. The crown prince, appreciative of her help and discretion, says that he’s left her a necklace back at Damiwon.
So pops in to tell the crown prince that everything’s ready, looking visibly unhappy to find Su there as well. Once the two are left alone, So seems suspicious of the basket of supplies she’s carrying out of the tent, and sees her being apprehended by Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s court ladies outside.
Su is brought before the queen and third prince Yo, and is asked to account for her absence. Yo calls her out for being with the crown prince and demands to know what she was up to. The basket she carried is used as evidence against her, and the herbs inside cause the queen to ask Su if the crown prince is ill.
When Su claims to know nothing, the queen grabs her by the hair. So sees this but doesn’t interfere—thankfully, Court Lady Oh does, with a working alibi for Su’s whereabouts.
Though Queen Sinmyeongsunseong questions Court Lady Oh’s claim that she sent Su to tend to the king, the court lady is sharp, and asks if the queen would have preferred that she tend to him herself. After a stare-down, the queen leaves.
So approaches his mother afterward, though as usual, she’s less than thrilled to see him. He’s not as concerned about her demeanor toward him as he is about the way she treats others—most notably Court Lady Oh and Su. No matter how much contempt she has, he cautions her, she should also maintain her dignity. Now the queen can’t help but wonder if this is all because of Su.
Court Lady Oh looks to be having some stomach trouble again, and is in no mood for Su’s gratitude. She turns around and slaps the girl across the face for going against her orders to stay away from the crown prince. Court Lady Oh says she regrets ever taking her in.
This finally seems to break Su, who asks what she’s done so wrong in treating the crown prince. Why shouldn’t she, if she knows how? When Court Lady Oh says she knows nothing of the palace, Su agrees, but then asks why Oh hasn’t bothered to teach her. Why, out of all the other court ladies, does Oh treat her so hatefully?
With a hand over her stomach and sweat on her brow, Court Lady Oh finally says that she gets so upset with Su because she reminds her of herself when she was younger—she’s too trustful and too good. “A girl like you could easily die here,” she says. She adds that she’s worried… but before she can say more, she doubles over in pain.
She wakes in her bed with Su tending to her, though her attempts to be gruff enough to make the girl leave don’t work—now that Su knows she was just being hard on her because she cared about her, she’s not scared of her anymore. Court Lady Oh’s demeanor changes, and soon both she and Su are smiling at each other over the terrible porridge Su made.
King Taejo performs the rain ritual to plead for the heavens to end the drought by kneeling repeatedly in supplication. It’s a strain on his knees and his stamina, so Astronomer Choi suggests that one of the princes take over for him.
In order to make the selection fair, all the princes put their names in a pot to be drawn at random. Yo scares the rest of his brothers by claiming that the people will call for their blood should the ritual fail to bring rain, at least until So aptly points out that the ritual isn’t held to make it rain, it’s held until there’s rain.
“A person cannot move the heavens. We just have to make it look as though they can,” So adds. Lo and behold, his name is chosen by the king to take over the ritual, and So has no choice but to accept.
He doesn’t get to just bow at the temple like his father did—he has to first walk through the capital as part of the ceremony, which subjects him to the ridicule of the people for being more monster than man. Believing that a masked prince won’t help their cause any, they throw stones at him, and sling what might very well be feces on him. (It also looks like mud, but they’re in a drought, so.)
So still does his best to go through with the ritual, offering no verbal complaint. By the time he actually makes it to the palace covered in muck, Queen Sinmyeongsunseong actually smiles to see him so, as does Yo.
Poor So looks frightened from the ordeal, only to shake with anger when he sees even Su looking at first away from him, then right at him. Defeated, he drops the ceremonial jug and runs away.
Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, pleased with this recent turn of events, has something even worse up her sleeve—she and Yo have conspired to have the crown prince attacked by thieves on his way back to the palace. Yo comments on how he had been the one who hoped to be in charge of the rain ritual, yet So was chosen instead.
The queen believes that it was King Taejo and Astronomer Choi who conspired to make sure So was chosen, having no belief that it was by some divine chance. Even so, she still sees this as an opportunity for Yo to gain more of a foothold to the throne, though we’re not told exactly how.
Su goes looking for So, who she finds napping in a boat (the boat’s stuck in mud due to the drought). She almost falls over, but either Su was faking sleep or his reflexes are so quick that he’s able to pull her to safety.
Of course, that means pulling her down with him, and the two share a moment as they find themselves in such close proximity. Su finally scrambles up to tell him that it’s time for him to come out of hiding now. He shouldn’t take what happened too hard, she adds—the people are just desperate and angry.
So snaps that he doesn’t want her pity, then asks if she knows why she was born. She admits that she’s thought about it, but there’s no answer. She can only determine how she’ll live, and she doesn’t want to live a life controlled by others. “No one in this world has an easy life,” she adds sagely.
He at least pays attention while she talks, but pretends as though he’s above it as he resumes fake-napping. At her advice that he return to the rain ritual and forget what happened, he calls her out for pretending to know everything about the world when she’s still so young.
That night, Su thinks over So’s question about why she thinks she was born and, unable to sleep, she attempts to concoct her own BB cream and succeeds.
It’s the day of the rain ritual, and Crown Prince Mu has yet to show up. Worried that something must have happened to him, Astronomer Choi volunteers to go find the crown prince himself. But since that would mean leaving So to appease the people on his own, So declines.
Astronomer Choi gets on his case about being too obsessed with the scar on his face, and advises him to get over it if he hopes to be able to help the crown prince and resolve his mommy issues. That’s when So realizes that Choi made it so that his name was picked.
The astronomer doesn’t deny it, but adds that he just wanted to help him build his confidence. So sees it as a lowly appointment in and of itself, thinking that Astronomer Choi just needed a slave to perform the ritual until it rained.
“If it rains because of that slave,” the astronomer says, throwing So’s words back at him, “then that slave will become a king!” Ah, so now the plan comes out—he’d only wanted to help So’s standing with his own family and the people, in order to make sure So stood in solidarity with the crown prince. But, he adds, he can only set the table. It’s up to So to take charge of his own destiny.
Resolved, So grabs a new set of ceremonial robes to perform the ritual, only to be stopped by Su, who claims to have found a way to rid him of his mask. Sitting him down before her table of makeup, she takes off his mask. They both look into each other’s eyes for a long, charged moment, until Su brushes his bangs aside to reveal the full extent of the scar.
He grows nervous when she reaches up to touch it, tracing her finger down the long, crooked line. Suddenly, he grabs her by the wrist and asks if she’s not afraid of his face. “Do you feel sorry for me?” She answers back that she can’t feel sorry for someone who’s always threatening her—and besides, the man behind the scar matters more.
She only finds it unfair that he’s had to suffer all his life because of a scar no bigger than the palm of her hand, causing him to search her face as he asks if he can really trust her. Su says that because she’s been betrayed so much in her own life, she will make it so that he can trust her by not changing who she is. If he trusts her, she adds, she won’t betray that trust.
“As long as it’s you… I can put myself in your hands,” So says quietly. “Do as you wish. I am now yours.” (He uses the same language as he did when he said she was “his” earlier on, only now, it’s reversed.)
Su sets to her work in covering his scar as we cut to the king and family waiting for the ritual to resume. The ministers suggest that the king appoint Yo to head the ritual since the crown prince has yet to show.
Feeling sure of himself, Yo tells Astonomer Choi that he should stop expecting the crown prince—he won’t be showing up anytime soon. Subtlety, Yo. Heard of it?
We find Su applying makeup to So’s scar, and once it’s done, she holds up a reflective surface for him to see for himself. He then grabs her by the shoulders when she rises and turns her to face him in all his unscarred beauty.
“Do you remember? I told you that you were mine,” So says. “Then and now, and the moment you touched my face… I decided that you would be mine. So prepare your heart from this point forward. I… will never let you go.”
He leans in as if to kiss her, causing Su to go still with shock. Seeming to sense her reluctance, So doesn’t push things further, and gently loosens his grasp on her shoulders. He leaves, and Su’s hand goes to her wrist, where Wook’s bracelet still rests.
Before Yo can make it to the ceremonial palanquin, So stops him, though he’s back to wearing his mask. He claims that only he and the crown prince have the right to be in the palanquin, and in his anger, Yo punches the mask off his face.
But when So rises from picking it up, Yo can’t believe his eyes. So takes his place in the palanquin and departs, ending up in the same place as before on his march to the palace. The people are ready to start throwing stones again, until they notice that his scar is gone.
Thinking it some sort of divine sign, the people all begin to bow to So as he walks among them, all of them praying for rain. Astronomer Choi looks pleased as he walks behind the prince, but Yo, looking from afar, looks positively murderous.
The royal family is surprised to see So walk back into the palace with the people supporting him rather than throwing stones, which makes the evil queen very, very angry. That, and she expected the son she actually loves to head the ritual.
All the princes react with restrained surprise to see So’s unblemished face, but it’s Wook who seems to figure out how such a thing could’ve happened. He looks over to Su, who’s only got eyes for So. Is that… is that jealousy? Please say yes.
Queen Sinmyeongsunseong is at a loss when she sees So’s face, but is unable to say anything as So heads up the steps toward the ceremonial altar. He turns to look at all gathered, his eyes resting specifically on Su. He smiles, she smiles back…
But suddenly the scene in front of her changes. She sees the unmarred So in a king’s garb atop the steps, his smile gone. Just as quickly, the scene returns to normal, but Su is still shaken.
Then, what starts as a few droplets turns into a torrential downpour. There’s surprise and jubilation among the royal family, though Queen Sinmyeongsunseong couldn’t look any more unhappy with all these developments if she tried.
Astronomer Choi just smiles, his plan having worked. Su, however, looks more frightened now than ever as So turns back to look at her. She can’t help from wondering if So will become King Gwangjong, the fourth king of Goryeo.
So turns back toward the altar and smiles a dangerous smile, as the rain washes the makeup away to reveal his scar once more.
COMMENTS
That last shot was great, not just because it gave us a frightening glimpse into that side of So we know to be lurking there, but because it’s an actual appropriate use of the close-up. I’ve been deliberately not commenting on PD Kim Kyu-tae’s work in this drama, preferring to wait to see the whole of it before weighing in, though it’s no secret that I’ve found his style and approach problematic over the years. And while he chronically overuses close-ups to the point where they lose their meaning, sometimes, the style yields positive results. In this case, getting close-ups of So’s face sans scar worked very well—getting endless close-ups of Su staring, not so much. But I’ll take what I can get, even if it means relying on luck and an actor’s ability to make some of the more questionable shot choices mean something.
Seeing So look so calculated near the end raises some concerns, the least of which being: How well do we actually know him? Like Astronomer Choi noted, he’s completely capable of killing people, yet completely powerless when it comes to his scar and his own insecurity. I wonder if, by helping to disguise the deformity that’s held So back all this time, Su’s actually created the monster she seems to think King Gwangjong is. That seems to be the reason she suddenly saw a flash of the future (or imagined it), of So as king with a scarless face. Which also brings up a whole host of questions about how Su is or isn’t impacting history with her presence in the past. It’s not an issue the show seemed to want to touch with a ten foot pole until now, and even then, I don’t know if they were making the direct correlation that Su just opened the door for So to become King Gwangjong. Or maybe they were, who knows.
I wish So had gotten more of a moment with the mirror before he turned all his attention to Su, if only because it would’ve been nice to see more of a meaningful reaction from him after he saw the one thing that’s held him back his entire life just disappear before his eyes. It seems like such a missed opportunity to not showcase the range of emotions we can only imagine he had at seeing himself as normal. But at least we got a glimpse of it in his thankfulness toward Su, despite there being more to their moment than just gratitude.
But one did get the feeling that all So’s ever wanted is someone he could trust and depend on, and maybe even love—it’s difficult to separate his need to be accepted and wanted by his mother with the solace he’s now found in Su. All that acceptance he could never get from Mommy Dearest, he suddenly has from Su. All that compassion he wanted, he now has. So it’s not so out of line to believe that all he needed from Su was her permission to trust her in order to fall for her completely, enough to where he’d declare himself to be hers. Granted, he also declared her to be his, but at least this time was an even trade, an “I am yours, and you are mine,” sort of scenario. It would’ve been nice to get Su’s input on this, but there’s plenty of time.
At least she grasped enough of the situation with So to think of Wook’s bracelet, which symbolizes the promise she made with him. What’s extra interesting about them is how the show even reinforced their relationship this episode—while it was left to Wook to tell her to wait for him last episode, it was Su who more or less asked the same of him this round. I’ve come to love those two together so much that I’m worried about all the conflict that last sequence of scenes promised (in the best way possible), with Wook looking at Su, and Su looking at So. Don’t break his smolder, Moon Lovers. Pretty please?

Can I ask/suggest something?
Is there any way at all the comments to be set (arranged / setting ) according to "latest comment" to appear first?
so that the first comment, is not the first that we see, and thus people will stop fighting for it.
The fight to be the "first commenter" is unnerving.
Tch.

How dare those stupid people to just throw anything on the 4th Prince when he is still a prince in spite of that mask. Good thing, IU is from the time of BB creams. I wonder if it's waterproof tho, haha! well, it started to rain, 'am guessing not.
But for what it's worth, it was so satisfying to see their stunned faces. "Yes, Bitches, 'tis me - prettier than thou!"

Try to watch the raw version in one of the drama websites. The raw version gets uploaded 2-3 hours after the episode airs in Korea.

200% agreed! It is so refreshing that we see respect from the male lead in how he's treating her instead of the "I'm going to force you and jerk you around physically" scenes that are common. He tried to make a move, realized she wasn't comfortable, AND HE BACKED OFF. I think that made the scene (and their relationship) several times better for me.

Dramafever has the official licensed International version so you really cannot blame them. I'd be pissed if I was Dramafever and would ask for the SBS version. With that in mind, WTF whoever edited this! They had plenty of time to get this right since it's the preproduced version without last minute edits. The story continuity really sucks. I was wondering what the point was of having So see Mom & Yo go after Su. The abrupt shift from Su doing So's makeup to him going to the palanquin was jarring.

Now that Lee Jun Ki's mask is off, I actually care about this show.
I have such a headache chasing down the right version, raw, Chinese sub, Eng sub. KD watching has never been this stressful!
First, myasiantv had a version in which the subs were like 2 mins behind the scenes they were meant for; then they uploaded a new vid that was the shortened version w/o the critical scenes!
Haven't checked it out on dramayou yet.

They cut out the best scenes; they cover up their biggest asset, i.e LJK's eye and face. You get the feeling that they are either totally incompetent or they've been bought off by the competition to make sure this show fails in the ratings.

From what I've read, it appears that they (SBS) haven't cut anything. After circulating the episodes as the final version to sites like DF, they've actually re-edited the episodes which has resulted in the final episodes being different in quite a few ways. The background music is different at times, lending a different vibe for certain scenes altogether. And of course, addition of these scenes, though I can't fathom why that scene from yesterday's episode had not made it to the original episode anyway.

I watched it on Dramafever just now and that scene was included. Don't know how but I'm glad it's there. Why have they been editing so many important scenes out?! I wonder how many hours of unedited footage they have and how much of it we're actually seeing. Wish they would just release everything, even if 20 eps turn into 40 eps, I'm willing to watch.

I went to look after reading your comment, and So says, "I am yours" but I didn't see her hold up the mirror. I didn't see the "almost" kiss. I only saw her putting concealer on his face and them having a conversation. The scene paramount shared (on twitter) at comment #2.1.1.1.2 is still not on DramaFever.

There's more than just the missing almost kiss scene.
I've just watched the two versions of the make up scene - domestic and international - and the domestic version (i.e. Korean version) includes more dialogue between So and Su and totally flows better. You can see the moment when So closes his eyes and puts his faith in Su.
And from there, the transition to the almost kiss scene builds up more naturally.
What a waste. And so frustrating for us international viewers

I confess that till now i was quite confused when i started reading here about the missing scenes because i had no idea and i was so confused as if i watch the "complete" version without any missing scenes as everyone was talking about what is missing and not but i see it's for those who see the Dramafever version...till now i always download the korean version posted after some hours on sites,so i guess i see the SBS released version uploaded by fans...Even so,that is a very lousy job and even more confusing for the viewer in terms of plot and how the story works, also how can they cut LJK scenes, even more one such as that...And more than sure, many who went into this story was for him

One of the most important moments in this drama and I had to read it instead of seeing it!! “Do you remember? I told you that you were mine,” So says. “Then and now, and the moment you touched my face… I decided that you would be mine. So prepare your heart from this point forward. I… will never let you go.”
Getting more and more confused as to the reasoning behind the editing of the international version. Again, needless Baekhyun scenes (Do the editors think only EXO fans watch this? before anyone gets upset I'm an EXO fan but this is too much).. capturing a bird to kill or not kill... to cook, but to not eat..useless to storyline... So seeing his scarless face for the first time, declaring himself Su's, the trust and potential future relationship is cut. What the %$#&!! Also, the scene of So standing up to his mother, cut!
Seriously running out of patience. I love this drama, but getting to despise the editors. Someone give me a good explanation as to why we are being fed a less comprehensive storyline? It has a feeling of sabotage....is this all so people will stop watching and NBC Universal won't do well and invest again? I can't think of a logical reason as to why those scenes were excluded. Bummed out.. bubble bursting..

I think the international version is the intended version but the korean viewers weren't satisfied with it so they started re-editing the drama, but they already sold the unedited version to the international websites.
The problem is we the international viewers are more interested on the SBS version more than the unedited one which is being uploaded to dramafever with subtitles. Now we are stuck with a bunch of very important yet unsubtitled scenes.

Hmm.. I wonder..
Since there will be simulcast with oversease territories:
After post production (where editing etc are done), this (director's cut, basically) will be submitted to the distributor.
Everything will be handed to the international distributor.
(There might be re edits here, taking into consideration local censor boards, etc)
Distributor will sell/hand to international companies. (???)
SBS is listed as the distributor for MLSHR (but how reliable is wikipedia). However, for the SBS Kdramas broadcasted locally in my country: in the end credits- for distribution, SBS is listed as distributor, then followed by the acquisition department staff of the local broadcasting station, local station dubbing staff, local station promo staff, etc.
Our local broadcasting station I mentioned above also sells their dramas overseas. And I have read in the official YouTube uploads of clips from their shows some comments from say, Africa-based fans why when their drama aired on Africa there one arc is missing, or if there are 2 seasons, only one season is aired. We can argue though that maybe the station in Africa only has purchased the rights for 1 season only.
But in the case of SHR, based on the comments, almost episodes distributed and aired over at Dramafever and One Asia (or Youku and Dramafever) are the same. So the sold/ distributed material is the same. Even the first 3 episodes on the pilot week on SBS is the same. (Until the "re-edit")
But supposing all materials are with SBS since they are presumably the distributor, they really can "re-edit" what they will air, independent of what was sold on the other broadcast companies.
What if the final cut or edit/ director's cut is the real, coherent version of the series? (Who knows whether that the 1-3 Director's Cut episodes aired on the pilot week's Saturday are the real final cuts? How easily "re-edited", readily available they are when the reception was bad on the pilot week...)
What if things only got weird when that cut was subject/examined/ re-edited for International Distribution?
Well, whatever happened there inside the cutting room...
Can SBS please just release the best version there is...
What shall we call it?
Uncut version?

Seriously, one has to ask why was that scene even cut in the first place. At first, I thought the conspiracy theorists were being too much. But now it's clear that many scenes were shot, but cut in post-editing. WHY? Did they think Lee Jun Ki was no longer a big enough star, so they decided to boost the screen time of people they thought would appeal to international viewers?
I was sympathetic in the beginning, and was okay with even the early missteps, but I just can't fathom, why the almost kiss scene would be cut. Not because of Lee Jun Ki, but more for Su's reaction afterwards. Her grabbing the bracelet from Wook, to stop herself, to remind herself about Wook, shows that she realized that there was something there with So. It was the first time, that Su acknowledged more than friendship, more that pity, more than help for So. And what did the editors do? They removed the scene, so we could have more filler scenes of sparrow hunting.
Why does 10th Prince still have these many scenes at this point in the drama (*fans, please note this is not EXO bashing*), in the original that had almost 40 episodes to flesh things out, his arc was already done before the 8th episode, but here we are, almost at the half way point, and we see that the next episode will be dealing with his marriage issues as well. Perhaps, it is not outright sabotage, more like politicking, and its effect on ruining what could have been a good drama. I mean we still have a missing princess, who still has to make an appearance, and surprise, surprise she is also an idol, from a popular group.
The writer did an excellent job of translating the story to a Korean time period, they actually shot the scenes. But the editors went back afterwards to cut scenes, move early scenes to later episodes, create nonsensical scene changes, bone headed music matching, etc. But, let's not forget that the director, given a larger budget than most, with bigger sets and varied location shots than most Korean Sageuks; my gosh they even had more than one horse in a scene! LOL. And what does the director do? He turns what should have been an epic showcase, into close up, face shots, neglecting all the details put in by the set and costume designers to showcase historical Korea. *Slow Clap* WELL DONE, Director (sarcasm)
I am irritated, because this drama could have been GREAT. I am not a fan of the other airing sageuk, its cuteness doesn't appeal to me, though I can understand those who enjoy it. I just can't seem to get into it, though I was a fan of the similar youth oriented, Sungkyunkwan Scandal. If Moon Lovers wasn't shooting itself in the foot and self-sabotaging, I wonder in what direction it could have gone. But then, the team behind it, forgot to actually promote to the Korean audience. Mistaking international acclaim and attention, for home-grown support. So maybe, even if everything was perfect, the drama would still have failed in...

I agree wholeheartedly. Feeling so bummed out.. why cant they make it 20 eps still but maybe with longer hours.. they are doing so many extra editing for the version aired in Korea, why not prolong it more? So the "newer" version can include both the scenes in the international version and the new-edited version. That way, at least i would feel that I'm not missing much, and i just need to see the newer version (SBS) and wait for anyone kind enough to do the engsub.

And the other question is: what else did I miss? In a way, I feel cheated by Scarlet heart. I can't help but start to think they tried to portray So to be more villainous and ruthless during post production since they left out so many significant scenes that proved the opposite as we've seen in the SBS version. It's as if they wanted/manipulated the viewers to root for Wook although now we know it wasn't the writer's intention.
Because while watching the episode without this scene and then seeing the preview I was totally like no WTH, why So, why?! But with this scene included it changes one's perception. Oh boy this seriously gives me CIIT flashbacks.

This scene proves that IU just isn't that great an actress. I admit, she does all her crying scenes splendidly. She sobs. She bawls. She weeps. She does all kinds of tear-shedding. But when it comes to the more nuanced moments, in which a blend of micro-expressions signifies layers and layers of feeling--shock, awkwardness, attraction, hesitation, curiosity, and longing--she can't pull it off. He grabs her. She looks stunned. He pulls away. In her face, there is zero gradation of feeling. I'm sorely disappointed in her. This could've been such an iconic scene but she ruined it with her inexperience.

CC cream, created in the 21st century, perfected in Goryeo.
CC cream: covers scars, blemishes, evens out skin tone, creates a flawless look, inhibits jealousy, spoils vengeful plots, instantly turns a crowd into crazy fan mode, make jaws drop, conjures rain and leave everyone including the king of Goryeo, speechless.

LJK is just killing it in the scene where he performed the rain ceremony but was stoned/had mud thrown at him and entered the courtyard where all eyes (royals, nobles etc) were turned on his mud-spattered form? Such vulnerability portrayed by him – I really felt for him.
Also how dare those people throw stones/mud at him? He’s a prince after all – the king’s son.
But I thought his walk through the crowds sprinkling water around was funny though. He looked so solemn and pompous, his arm stretched out – green palm in hand. Something about it really made me laugh.

Explain this to me.
WHY are people so turned off by the scars?? I don't get the big deal AT ALL.
He's supposed to be a soldier, soldiers go to war, sometimes they get scars. And for a soldier prince to be reviled for something so (IMHO) minor is super weird.

Goryeo days weren't as accepting of people with deformities or scars...especially if you're royalty. It wasn't his choice to be a soldier, it was because of that scar that he got sent off and the family that raised him weren't really qualified as model parents. He was treated unjustly and indifferently because of the scar he bears.

Zi
September 19, 2016 at 9:04 PM
Not sure about Goryeo in particular... but in my country, back in the era of royalties, scars/deformities were treated the same. And that's for a few reasons.
Generally, marks/deformities on the bodies may be indication of contagious disease. Even if it's a scar from an injury, it could become infected and later become contagious skin conditions (Remember, there's no antibiotics). And that might result in disease outbreaks... so people generally shunned those with visible deformities.
And as for the royalties, their hold on the people is predicated on the fact that they have the "right" to rule... which generally means they are "favoured" by the heavens, or in my culture, of good Karma. So they are held to a standard of perfection; birth defects/deformities/bad scars are generally seen as indication that they are not favoured to rule.
I know many things might seem silly to us modern people, but in the past, without medical knowledge that we have now, people had to made due with their own understanding of how the world/our bodies work. And there's logic behind their actions, no matter how illogical it seems to be to us.
I hope this kinda answers your question.

This is just a drama not real history. Goryeo was built from the sweat and blood of war heroes who fought for many years before the entire Korean peninsula was united.
In reality they had scars.
Goryeo's history was written thousands of years later from 2nd, 3rd hand sources during the reign of King Sejong (Joseon era).
I think this writer making a big deal out of it more than it was back then.

Since that Goryeo CC cream has that many extraordinary uses as listed out by @Yoyo, maybe Su should go and have it patented and give it a new name. We already have BB cream, CC cream and DD cream, probably it can be called :
GG cream - Goryeo Ggorgeous cream
MM cream - Moon Magic cream
SS cream - So-Su Super cream or more appropriately, So-Su Sealant cream, as this special concocted cream helped seal the fate of Su-So when So said : "Then and now, and the moment you touched my face (ahem, to apply that SS cream)… , I decided that you would be mine". lol.

Loving all your jokes about the cc cream :D I was supposed to sleep but couldn't due to uncontrollable laughing over the witty wordplay, but just wondering though, how does a cosmetics salesperson like Hae Soon know how to conjure cc cream out of base ingredients? I would assume that her job would only just entail selling cosmetics and ensuring her application of makeup skills would be excellent... Forgive my ignorance...
While on the topic of makeup, I also propose names for the other types of makeup!
For 3rd's eyeliner, it'll be Egotistically Evil Eyeliner, but on Lee Joon Ki, it'll be Electrifying Edgy Eyeliner :D

I've been watching this one just because I needed something fun and ridiculous at the beginning of the week. Then this episode happened and I'm having to fan myself down. I do like LJK, but didn't consider myself a serious fan. I may have to join the fangirl (fan ahjumma) party! He is making Wang So absolutely fascinating.
(By the way, Terry Pratchett fans, did anyone else suddenly see him as a young Vetinari?)

He is too emotional in general to be Vetinari - only in that scene where he explained the rain ritual he somewhat came closer.

September 19, 2016 at 9:41 PM
Yeah, oppa is not quite a Vetinari. That's not quite his style, not yet.
On the other hand, I could see him in a more playful, cheeky mode as Moist von Lipwig - except for the part where Moist is completely unmemorable to look at. That would knock LJK out of the running for that role almost instantly.

Totally different universe, but I got more Fire Lord Ozai feels from him. Obviously there is the Zuko connection there which I get too. What with the scar and the angst (so much angst! But I do love it) and the parent issues and the flashes of cute dorkiness. But then at the end of the rain ritual with the calculating smile and the visions of him as poised, cruel ruler, all I saw was Ozai. Maybe that will be something explored in future episodes; whether So will go down the Ozai path or the Zuko path. Yeah, historically he's more like Ozai, what with the purges and all, but I'm sure dramaland can explain that away to make him more like Zuko if they want to.
And! Sorry for turning this into an Airbender essay when it was based on a Pratchett thread, but I am writing by the seat of my pants here and the connections are just coming to me as I type. Haha. But Yeonhwa also comes across to me as a more caged Azula. We all know Yeonhwa would be out there burning villages and attacking sky bison if she had the opportunity, but is unfortunately restricted by her gender and position. And (sorry to make it squicky here) but in a couple of ATLA episodes I definitely got some incestuous vibes from Azula. I'm pretty sure they weren't intentional, but that's how the scenes played out. And Yeonhwa hasn't exactly hidden the fact that she's keen to marry in the family.
Anyway. That's pretty much all I've got for now. Flameo.

I read this comment this morning, and I was all, "No way, Jose." Then, as it's been stewing around in my brain all day, I suddenly realized I will NEVER be able to read about Vetinari without picturing LJK. So, basically, my love for Terry Pratchett and Kdramas have collided in that one perfect eye-liner'd moment of menacing LJK.
There are worse things to happen, and this ensures I will never forget this drama or that moment, so thanks for that comment!

This episode was awesome.
I kept on replaying the last ten minutes of this episodes because I'm loving the Wang So winning moments. It's just a bonus that Lee Jun Ki looked ethereal on white and that mask-free face is just so beautiful. I assume that from ep9 onwards he won't be wearing that masked anymore.
Concealer saves the day even in Goryeo Era. Lol.
Choi Ji Mong's nonchalance towards So's scar's disappearance solidify my hunch that he's a time traveller. Like "Oh, you used concealer? Then let's go and start the rain ceremony. Now." I was actually expecting that one of these days Ha Jin's things that she left by the lake will make a surprise appearance in JM's astronomy tower. Haha.
Obviously, So fell for Su first but once i saw the preview. My heart breaks for him because it looks like Su is scared of him now. And asking the king to have Su is not gonna help either.

September 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM
Yep, the part where Choi Ji Mong didn't bat an eyelid was strange. I doubt such awesome concealer had been invented in the Goryeo era such that he wouldn't be surprised at So's lack-of-a-scar.
I hope they explain his relationship with So and Su properly though, and his motivations. Such as, was he originally from a Goryeo era and time-travelled into the future to somehow bring Su back into the past to help So? How did he even have magical time-travelling powers in the first place? Why did he have to bring Su of all people - is she actually a reincarnation of Haesoo? Did Choi Ji Mong plot to drown Haesoo so that Su's spirit could materialise in her body?
If all these are not explained I'm not going to be a happy dramabean when it all ends.

Yes, Astronomer Ji Mong definitely knows more than he's letting on!
After all, he's the one who got Su into Damiwon by saying how good she was with cosmetics and such, then made sure that Wang So would be picked to lead the rain ritual. I think (hope) the Gwanjong flash-forward is a fakeout, since I don't think Ji Mong would be helping So if he suspected So would start killing off brothers to get the thone. But I do like the tantalising glimpse of So's dark side here!

They stuck the 'baby boy' OST in a scene for #10, which can be easily fast-forwarded so it's like it never happened at all!
Also I loved the instrumental OST that was playing when Su takes off the mask and touches So's scar. It's got a tension to it that's perfect for the scene, I wish they had kept that throughout her makeup application too instead of having the vocal instrumental.

Hi Del! Count me in on the "Impatiently waiting" club. So frustrating that the first half of the whole series is focusing on the Su/Wook relationship(even though it's charming), I want to see more So/Su. I had never seen any of LJK's work, and was curious to why everyone was going so crazy over him. I SEE NOW! Mesmerizing! He drew me in to him and his character in the first episode. Wow! Hooked now!
Btw, did anyone else's heart flutter when he told Su "Do whatever you want, I'm yours" - at least that's how I heard it ;)

"Btw, did anyone else’s heart flutter when he told Su “Do whatever you want, I’m yours” – at least that’s how I heard it ?"
I watched the episode RAW and was mesmerized by the makeup scene so didn't spend too much time worrying about what he was saying to her but when I finally saw a subbed version on that scene...my heart not only fluttered but went straight into cardiac arrest...when he leaned in, that was awesome but then he let her go AND THAT WAS EVEN MORE AWESOME.
His smile when he drew back though...like..he KNEW he had affected her (of course she was affected she's not blind or dead Wang So!) and then when he staggered away...unf. Like..gimme more of that please!
I saw some click bait floating around that SHR isn't doing well because there's no chemistry between Jun Ki and IU...all I have to say is that whoever wrote that might want to rewatch all their scenes.

Hi Nicjumma! Glad that you are joining the club. I have been his fangirl for a long time but I must say Moon Lovers is his project which I am most excited about post MS, because this is the first time he did Goryeo saeguk and that mane of glory.... don't even get me started gushing.
I had butterflies in my stomach when he said that. And LJK's voice, I don't know why he sounds like speaking in a lower register than he usually does but gosh, so sexy and I am not complaining.
And that is why I am amazed at how Haesu could be so steely when he literally gave her the permission to do "anything" with him now that he was all hers? LOL.

Believe it or not, Su is starting to fall for So without her realizing it. The way she let go of her breath once So released her (after he tried to kiss her but didn't), she clutched her wrist/bracelet. It seemed like she was holding her breath b/c her heart was racing, and the bracelet gave her a reminder that her "heart" already belongs to somebody else.
I liked how Wook already picked up on the relationship between So and Su already.

@pogo..I hear you. I love that the show has set up So and Soo as besties of a sort. It's one of the reasons I ship them so hard and the thought that Soo will be too freaked out and go back to fearing Wang So hurts me. And on So's side this is probably going to be rejection on a whole different level right? I mean he Just got to trust her and he's declared his intentions and now she's going to treat him like an evil overlord? I'm anxious about how the show is going to handle this...please do it well!

"he’s declared his intentions and now she’s going to treat him like an evil overlord?"
This would hurt me a lot. And So too, obviously. But I can see how this could easily happen. And it's just a big messy time travel paradox which I love/hate so much. With Su he could be happy and not be murderous etc. But if she rejects him then it could push him down the path of evil. Wah. She rejects him because she thinks he's the evil king but it then it causes him to become the evil king. It's that kind of time travel tragedy that gets me riiiight in the feels.

@pogo Completely agree about fearing that So will come on too strong before Su is ready. Part of the charm of that intense, romantic scene when So declares his intentions is that he didn't force himself on her, and he wasn't hurt that she *wasn't ready*, and backed off. That was so sweet. But, episode 9's preview [SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]
@IvoryLight & darcyM I think you both hit the nail on the head. I think Su is one path, one way for So to be redeemed and a good king. But, there's a dark way, and I think it is with Yeon Hwa.
LJK even said in an interview that So doesn't just love Su, he becomes obsessed with her. I predict they will build the So/Su romance until it hits a pivotal point: when So chooses wrongly in some way - and this forces Su to reject him. And then he will chose Yeon Hwa as queen, and it goes downhill from there, because it drama looks like #tragedy

September 20, 2016 at 5:18 AM
omg, it looks like this drama is following the original quite closely indeed. @PineappleGongzhu, based on what jun-ki said in that interview you mentioned, though there was no Queen Yeon Hwa in the original, my guess would be, after he becomes king, the high-handed way he is going to banish all his brothers and leave them to die, particularly, the 8th and the 14th prince, would be that pivotal point that breaks the So-Su relationship.
Actually, Su might be attracted to So's obsessiveness and possessiveness, she was swept away by his overbearing brute force, and it gave her butterflies, very unlike Wook, who was too gentlemanly and hesitant at the crucial moments, and eventually, causing his ship to sink.
pogo
September 20, 2016 at 1:43 AM
@IvoryLight - I think it's going to be a battle between So's obsessive personality and the level of trust they've built when they were lowkey buddies. I'd thought they would fall in love more gradually, but So realising he wants her and acting on that by telling her, changes things quite a bit.
@PineappleGongzhu - exactly, in some ways the hottest part of that scene was that he respected her reluctance and stepped away. But I think the ending scene definitely makes it clear that the idea of So liking her is less scary to her than the idea that he may be Gwangjong. Which is a recipe for mistrust and disaster.
Required fields are marked *
IvoryLight
September 20, 2016 at 2:35 AM
@darcyM yeah, exactly. By rejecting him initially, Su could have set him down that dark path she so fears he'll go down. However, I don't lay all of that at her feet. No matter how difficult his circumstances, So DOES still have his own agency. I prefer a character to *choose* to follow the right path because they want to, and not just because they want to appease the one they love, although that in itself is a choice too. I'm just hoping So and Su will be able to maintain their sense of self and not have their every decision colored by thoughts of someone else.
@PineappleGongzhu argh, tell me about it. Why do I always pick dramas that are designed me bring me maximum pain? I'm anxious about how they're going to develop this now. It's really hard to stan a couple when one is legitimately scared, and the other is obsessive. Not a healthy turn to a relationship that started out so well- I'm referring to their friendship of course and not the numerous death threats he's given her...We should start a counter or something.
Episode 8: # of Episodes since the last time Wang So threatened Hae Su: 0 days
@Pogo The thing is in the post-concealer scene when she was frozen, I didn't read her reaction as fear so much as it was her being overwhelmed. He definitely didn't pull any punshed with the "I'm yours, you're mine, brace yourself, I'm not letting you go" speech (-which, lets be real here, who WOULDN'T be overwhelmed. I'm still fanning myself and upon rewatch I actually booed when he leaned back because you're such a tease, So-ya I see what you did there!) but in the ritual scene, she was watching him so very carefully, and when they made eye contact, she was all smiles for him. There was no discomfort or fear at all there but yes, if there was, it's definitely overshadowed by how scared she is of Gwangjong..which again makes me sad.
I sort of wish they didn't have her definitively identify So as the scary King so soon though..I feel like it would have made for a better plot point if she kept questioning herself about it, especially since YES she knows he's killed people, but so has Wook, and she's had just as many instances of So being a stand up guy as him being crazy/scary dude so you know...give him a chance before you declare him the Evil Emperor?
IvoryLight
September 20, 2016 at 2:37 AM
Eurgh with the typos!
He definitely didn’t pull any *punches with the “I’m yours, you’re mine, brace yourself, I’m not letting you go” speech-
pogo
September 20, 2016 at 3:21 AM
@IvoryLight - I guess I didn't word that right, but you put it better. To all appearances, So liking Su is not a dreadful or scary prospect to her - like you said, she recovers enough to be supportive at the ceremony, and doesn't seem freaked out by So's post-makeup declaration.
What does freak her out is the thought that he could be Gwangjong. And that makes me sad too, that what pushes her away from So might not be something he actually did (of course, combined with his newly presenting himself as a romantic interest - if he comes on too strong with her, the idea of Gwangjong is likely to scare her off where she wouldn't have been scared off earlier).

I loved your part of agency.
infact in this show, we have never had HS "reform" WS. He does things on his own. He rebuilds those stone prayer monuments, saves her from forced marriage, decides to go to the rain ritual again despite being humiliated etc etc ...

Also, that 'you're mine' declaration - looks like So wants to take himself out of the friendzone and make it crystal clear to Su that he sees her as a woman.
Which on one hand is making me swoon (and he actually did stop when he realised Su wasn't going to reciprocate), but on the other makes me miss their friendship. Now that Su had that vision of him as Gwangjong, that's shot, especially since she looked terrified - that doesn't bode well for them as friends.

- Baek-ah and Su's friendship, they're so natural and adorable together it is awesome. Even if his trolling got her in trouble. And I love that he's trying to help Su find out his brother's taste in tea.

Yes, thank you for mentioning Court Lady Oh. Because she is being (understandably) overlooked today haha. Evil Queen With The Long Name has hated her from the start ever since she was mentioned in a conversation with Nice Queen. And today the scene with Evil Queen, Oh, and King, EQ was definitely jealous. And Oh used that jealousy to stop EQ interrogating Su. Words to the effect of "Would you rather I had tended to the King?" That, coupled with Oh's speech to Su about them being similar and her trying to protect Su by forbidding her from having contact with the Princes and the definite chemistry between Oh and the King as she did his hair makes me think Oh was involved with the king at some stage. Or maybe a brother of his or something like that? They definitely have a history and the show is trying to set her up as a parallel to/mentor for Su. So I'm interested to see what develops. But not at the expense of So/Su screen time like today (seriously, why would you cut THAT moment from your final edit? Grrr). Maybe just less of 10th Prince please? And more interesting stuff like Lady Oh. And LJK's face.

"the scar really isn’t that big a deal to Su (duh)" indeed for a moment I was waiting for her to lick her finger and smudge it against So face as mothers do with theirs kids when they have dirty faces
Su: see? gone...no biggy... now you can play with the other...
So: ...

After watching the raw version, I watched the eng subbed version and was disappointed to see they cut out the conversation soo and so had after she covered his scar...
And i wonder why alot of the sound effects and bg music was noticeably different?
I'm just glad I found this recap so I know what so said to soo in that scene, TYSM!!!
Ps. Isn't anyone subbing the actual non edited version of the show? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

The sound effects are different probably because the editing team take in consideration how much backlash the drama for using unsuitable music, like all those eng lyric bits, modern music in scenes that should have been instrumental, etc

Actually, the actual non-edited scene is the one that we watch with eng subbed. the su-soo scene is the scene added by sbs which mean they re-edited it to make the drama better after receiving a lot of backlash. The subbed episodes are the episodes that sbs had sold to the international earlier before the airings of the drama so we, the international, need to watch this original and the edited sbs episodes will only come in raw and we can only hope for kind souls to sub it

Oh yes, things are certainly moving fast in this episode. Hope the ratings will go up too which this drama rightfully deserves.
I've been wondering why does the evil queen hate So so much when she's his mother? Is it guilt because she's the one who caused his scar? Or is it King Taejo is not the biological father n she doesn't want to be reminded of her indiscretion?

It's a good news but not to dampen your spirit, ratings for Moonlight and Monster also went up last night. The good news is, the scene where Su had a vision that Wang So is Gwangjong pretty much set the trending in Naver and elsewhere. Now that the drama has moving up a notch in the storyline and LJK is pretty much dominating the screentime, I hope the rating will continue to increase and hope they keep the episode to be this good and even better as the show progress.

Firstly, how in the world is the 10th prince older than 13th and 14th princes? It feels weird when they call him hyungnim. The guy is just like a child! I was practically rolling my eyes when he called the Warrior Princess a murderer and stomped off. Like seriously, he wanted to eat the bird some minutes before.
I knew Su's makeup skills will come in handy, but I didn't know it would be this soon. Lee Jun Ki *swoon* I think I just became a fan.
I'm still on the 8th Prince's ship, and sadly I'm going down with that ship.

I'm guessing the 10th prince liked the idea of eating the bird, but forgot that it meant actually killing said bird, especially in front of him and so quickly/coldly. Not that it excuses his behaviour. He definitely acts like a child.
I'm glad to find a fellow soul who's decided to sink with 8th's ship too - I'm definitely going down with this ship, no matter what happens. Not that that stops me from admiring Lee Jun Ki :'D I'll probably join that ship when the 8th prince's one sinks :p

It's a strange relationship, but I can understand why the 10th prince its older.
The naming and rank is different in Asian society. My husband was the 10th in the family. When my last son was born, my husband's older brother's grandson was about 7. The grandson had to call him uncle.
The other princes don't have much to do in this drama except for the 10th prince. He's a clueless dork...

u cant compare that way.. those princes are on the same generation (they had the same father)
for ur case, thats a late second gen and early third gen (which is pretty common now, since not everyone marries at certain age or give birth at certain age.. its not surprising to have nephew calling a uncle that still in the stomach or younger.. especially if ur family is pretty huge and extended few gen..)
for the drama case, they say 10th is meant to be a bit slower (that context).. or maybe he is just too well protected in his greenhouse like a flower and did not had to "grow up as fast" as his other brother (like wook, he had to kill ppl at 11 iirc, to protect his mother and sister from enemy)

The last 10 minutes, especially the scene where Wang So standing at the altar, looking back at Su and smiled and suddenly she had a vision of him as Gwangjong....my my.... that scene was EPIC and sent the chills to my bones.
I mean, how is that possible for LJK to do all these in a flip of scene? One second you see the earnest grateful smile of wounded puppy Wang So and then cut to LJK in the king's garb, looking all regal, formidable and fearsome and LJK did this with just his eyes and facial expression? Oh my gosh.... man, give this guy the Best Actor Award, please.
I feel that the scene when Wang So stood at the altar is the moment Wang So decided that he could make everything possible. Granted with rain, he knows now that he can even move heaven and not even his scar can stop him. When Wang So ascended the altar, it suddenly gives me the vibes that this is no longer the Wang So who longed for acceptance, instead this is the ambitious Wang So with a hidden agenda of his own. Aside from the great editing and great writing of this scene, I believe this is all LJK's works and he amazed me.
Now that Su knows that Wang So is Gwangjong, I think she will distant herself away from him and her warning to Wook to not cross So will be the catalyst to set everything into motion. By trying to alter history, she in fact pave the path towards that history.
I am at loss of words and this drama is getting more and more interesting now LJK has taken center stage. Give the man all the screentime and he sure will deliver. I am all on board and I love this drama even more.

The recap mentioned.....
"So turns back toward the altar and smiles a dangerous smile, as the rain washes the makeup away to reveal his scar once more."
So, I don't think it's waterproofed cause the makeup was washed away and his scar eventually revealed.
I love the scene even more especially after reading the recap. There's a subtle meaning behind. He may look perfect, all the deformed covered up but underneath those layers, there's a scarred soul, a monster waiting to be unleashed.

So good to read the re-cap because the international version did not have the scene where So look into the mirror and the nearly kiss scene, which is a shame because that kinda set everything in motion for So's feelings/confession and the relationship tension.
This episode is soo good!
But it leave me questioning whether So has always been the King's piece in his game of throne, because it seemed like king and Ji Mong has planned at lot of things for So, and king probably want So as CP right-hand mand, do all the dirty work but Ji Mong is aiming for something more, probably getting So to be king.
Soon-deok is so cute with her father <3 such a waste that she marry 10th prince, but then again, she probably feel the motherly need of protecting him
Finally, things are kinda set into motion for the grand battle, but Wook doesn't seem to be too interested in take the throne, unless he want to be king to free Su or his jealousy will brew and explode. For now, all I see is that the CP might die from Yo assassination, Yo and So will face head on, Baek-ah on So side plus the general, Won is still a mysterious, suspicious variable, wook might rise and try to gain his own power
and Su will continue to So personal make-up stylist loolz

idk their stand or reasoning. maybe pimple is common, everyone can get it.. but i guess olden days quality are better too (fresh air fresh water healthy food.. no pollutants.. unlike now.. like how haesoo was commenting how nice the haesoo skin is.. of course u can also say shes 25 and now going to a 16 yo body.. thus the difference)
no offense: probably like how some ppl always had a different glance to anyone different/special than them, they just cant accept easily.. even now is like that, olden days is definitely worse.. (eg, olympic and paralympic.. can see the contrast there; pretty obvious..)
some ppl are just blind to the fact.. or are afraid of something that they dont know of..

In the last few ep of SWWTN, LJK pulled off two contrasting sides of his character, the good and the evil, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde style, the evil Sun Yeol gave me goosebumps. The flashing image of him as ruthless king is a prelude to what is to come, given his superb acting skills, he can be utterly evil to the core, it gives me the shudders, as I really don't want to hate him!

I swear half his acting in this role happens with just his face - that look when he realised Su was touching his scar? OOF.
There are so many scenes in this drama where Lee Jun-ki's gaze has something like ten emotions in just one look. And the close-ups are perfectly placed to exploit that.

KHN is brilliant but not yet the same level as LJK. He is younger though, he will eventually morphed into a great actor as LJK.
And that is why, when I read comments somewhere that KHN is better than LJK during the earlier episodes, I could not agree as KHN was given massive screentime to shine. And look at how it is once LJK taking center stage, everyone seem to submerge into the background.

Part of it is acting, part of it is ..... charisma? X-factor? Just something intangible.
We had a movie once with 2 equally good upcoming actors, both doing well critically and popularity wise. But in the movie, one of them essentially ate the other up. Or more accurately he left everyone in the dust. Screen presence.
Thats the same i feel with LJK. He is a fabulous actor but the camera just loves him. So when he is onscreen, you don;t want to look at someone else.

I can stare at LJG endlessly..whether he is just sleeping, eating, doing nothing...I can just stare and be deliriously happy. That's how one can get through The Scholar Who Walks the Night.
Ahhhhh...he was so intense in ep 8!!! I usually *roll my eyes* when the lead makes "You are mine" type of speech. But this is LJG saying it...in that deep, soulful voice...
Anyway just keep the close ups on LJG, long shot for the rest - the ratings will do just fine.

So, now that his mask has been removed, likely we will get double digit ratings now that LJK's glorious full face is on display? I am praying so!

Quickly commenting before i rush off to college
- I loved, loved, loved the last 10 minutes of the show. The look on WS's face when people are kneeling to him, his smirk, his evil eyeliner flashback(fwd) that HS had ! Amazzzzzzing!
- Someone cast LJK as a psychopath. Please. He would rock it
- Unless Wook becomes evil, i don't care about him anymore. He is freaking boring!
- What did WS say to Queen Evil after she abused HS? That scene was missing in the subs. Anyone knows
- Here is the longer subbed scene from the makeup scene which SBS aired. Thanks to the original uploaders

Bottomline :
Everything is 10X better when you give screen time to LJK
Catch you later beanies. Got to go!

You are so right! Everything is 10X better with more LJK.
I loved the moment after the makeup scene where Soo grabs her wrist and the realisation that she's shaken by So (who wouldn't be?). I'm ready for her to let Wook go (like right now).

I liked the way she reaches for the bracelet on her wrist, like she needs to touch it to be reminded of Wook after the momentary lapse when she was suddenly aware of So as a man.

Thanks HeadsNo2 for the recap! I enjoy reading your thoughts very much!
Am I the only one who doesn't seem to get the entire episode? I am watching on Dramafever and they totally cut the mirror scene/"Prepare your heart - I'll never let you go" conversation between Su and So. Bah humbug!
On a more general philisophical note, I was struck by the contrast in the reactions of the people to ugly So vs pretty So. I thought how sad it was that people "back then" valued a person's looks so much that they would throw rocks and mud/poop at someone they deemed ugly. But remove that blemish, and suddenly they are bowing down because that same exact person is now considered worthy. I even shook my head in dismay at how shallow people like that were - looking only at outward appearances.
And then it hit me how I am the same way. I watch dramas and then come on DB to gush over how gorgeous this actor/actress is and get excited to see which pretty faces will be in the next drama. It is the human condition to value external beauty, whether we mean to or not, and oftentimes we choose it over internal beauty. Because I don't really know the character of any of the actors/actresses I prefer - so most of my judgments are based off of my impressions from their looks.
As one who is not beautiful on the outside, I try, more often than not, to hide my flaws behind a mask or (Goryeon) BB cream. But inevitably, that mask will come off. Hopefully when that happens, folks around me see a positive vision from my internal character, not a menacing one like Su saw at the end.

For all its other flaws, Scarlet Heart has established very well that having scars or physical flaws is a big no-no in Goryeo society, and not just for So - the Crown Prince has to hide that he suffers from an ailment of the skin, Su was allowed out of her marriage to Taejo by scarring herself, we were told in the very first week that So can only move around the city with the scar because he's a royal, even the man who threatened Jung had become an outcast because he lost an arm. What looks like just an old, faded scratch to us is a life-ruiner for So.
And like you said, it's not all left in the past. Niife wounds to the face aren't common, but say, someone with, say, cystic acne in 2016 is still likely to get told it's their fault in some way or that it makes them ugly, or at least made to feel that way.

It was a big deal for royalty. It somehow is an indicator that they are not worthy to be in the position that they are in. In Mirror of the Witch (Joseon era), the king had a strange illness where his skin had thorn-like growth. Only the royal doctor knew of it, and he was sworn into secrecy. The king was afraid that if someone knew he had an illness, the nobles will force him to abdicate the throne and place someone else there. I think in ancient times, the king was seen as representative of heaven/gods; so, if he is healthy and virtuous, the land and people will be prosperous too.

I know right? I hope in the course of their love story, Eun IQ somehow manages to increase by about 50 points. But Soon deok is so adorable. I'm torn, I want more Soon deok but less Eun. How do we solve that problem.

I think Soon-deok's dad can actually make a better man out of Eun. Train him outside the palace, teach him a harder life, etc. But I just dislike Eun at this point that I feel kinda pissed that he's gonna end up with such a precious girl. >____<

Oy, thank the Heavens!!!! No pun intended, since this episode was all about the Heavens and rain kekekeekke THIS is the episode I've been waiting for, where the remainder of the story/plot is set into motion *does happy dance*
FINALLY!!! This episode finally kicked everything up a notch: more of our Su/So Couple, more struggle (internal and external) of our main three-way love-line and of our beloved characters, and an inkling of the upcoming power struggle to come is being given to us viewers ~~
Time and time again, we see (and hear) So declare that he "doesn't want to see Su appear in front of him again", yet, every time, he is always drawn back to her, as if she's a So magnet *squee* But by doing that, it shows so much of the things that So lacked in his life that Su is able to bring and give to him, which is why So is attracted to her-- his attraction to her isn't simply physical, it is also emotional and psychological.
** SPOILER**
At this point in the story, there has already been a(n) (unmentioned) time skip (the original BBJX: China never really explicitly mentioned or notified viewers of it's time skips, either) and Su actually has been here for a while now, so I'm not so bothered anymore when the show decides to randomly let us know about things that happened off-screen, like the relationships and closeness that Su has developed with each of the princes; Therefore, I'm also not even scratching my head at the Wook/Su moments of romance and wondering how they got so close so (seemingly) fast anymore XD
/ END SPOILER**
Just like Heads, all this time, I've refrained from commenting on the directing style/editing--not so much writing-- of the Show thus far, even if are daunting moments where I am overwhelmed by all the close-up shots we are getting, but I felt that the style wasn't so hard to deal with in this episode and matched quite well with how the unfolding of the plot took place, as this episode was very much about character development and many of those close-up shots helped to portray many of the emotions of the characters.... And, c'mon, homegirl here isn't about to complain when we are getting so many glorious close-up shots that is the glory of Lee Jun Ki oppa <3
For the first time, I'm anticipating what the next episode will be brought to us viewers, so bring it on, Episode 9, come right at me ~!!!

Forgot to add:
I'm so glad that Wook started to feel some sort of emotion/threat/pangs of jealousy over Su and is starting to get an idea that there is a possibility that she won't end up with him... Hopefully it'll be indication for him to up his game, in regards to his feelings for Su, and to do and say the things he was not able to do and say to Lady Hae...

The time skip kind of worked in this one because of the drought. We know from the boat in the lake for example that time has passed because the water is low so the drought has come out of nowhere. I like that kind of detail, though I must admit I wouldn't mind a little bit more info on exactly how long Hae Soo has been in Goryeo.
And yes, the more close ups of LJK the better. I think because he's so fabulous at letting the emotions flit across his face that I'm just wrapt every time I see him. Ugh. That almost kiss though.

I want to say that it's been 8-10 years now that Hae Su has been in Goryeo, but I could be wrong... I'm saying this just because, at the beginning when Hae Su first arrived in Goryeo, she was guesstimated to be around 15-17 years old. In last week's episode, during the scene when the two queens were discussing the King's upcoming new marriage, Queen SMS said she heard that the bride, a.k.a. Hae Su, was about 29 years old
Again, I could be wrong, this is just my opinion =)

That makeup scene though! Did you hear how heavily she was breathing when he left? LOL Say what you will, I still think she has already fallen because she could have told looked away or try to at least fight him off if she didn't want to kiss him. And then, we see her hardently looking at him during the ceremony then smiling before her premonition came into play. I mean she just got a pretty bold confession out of him while she supposedely like someone else, and she smiles at him??? But yeah, i'm supposed to believe she only has her heart on Wook. She already there, but she still doesn't know it since she still has option A when she didn't know that option B was available. I really have no beef with Wook other than he just doesn't have any characterization besides second lead so my interest in him is barely above 0. If I define her relationship with both guys especially after this episode, one is sweet and the other is fire/spicy.
I just didn't like the DF preview when she screams when he hugs her like really??? What happened to your big speech about him being good despite his appearance? You don't scream when he tells her he killed people stating that he must had a valid reason but you scream because of something she's not even 100% sure. By now, she should know that those brothers are not really picture perfect either so what doesn't she think he might have good reasons to kill some of them too? It almost seems to me she might try to use it as a justification to not deal with her feelings for him to run away from him.

Aaand the battle for the throne has finally started.
But I still don't quite get the flurry over Gwangjong and how he killed his brothers to get on top. From what understand from online sources, it seems like he got the throne after Yo, who got it after the Crown Prince, which makes it according to birth order, no?
Am I missing out on something?

I think Goryeo was dominated by influential families before rather than royalty. So to lessen the power of these families, he emancipated the slaves and created a civil exam so that anyone can serve the government. As we all know, the more powerful a clan is the more they can manipulate the system.
But to further stabilize his reign. He created fear. And whoever oppose him will be executed. So he ended up executing 2 Princes (i don't know who).

It seems like the throne was passed down according to birth order after Taejo died. It's kind of similar to the old Goguryeo.
Wang-so ruled for a long time so the throne was passed down to his eldest son after his death.

I was replaying that deleted scene so much! Joon ki's intensity!! And alsom Joon ki, thank you for recognizing that a girl is reluctant to be kissed, rather than just go for it without even a semblance of permission from her. <3
If the raw version of the re edited can be found in dramayou, where can we find the subbed version of it? Why make everything so confusing :(

There's been speculation that Soo is somehow hallucinating/seeing visions when she's imagining historical scenarios. I don't believe that's the case, I think it's the visual representation of her thoughts.
In this case, So, who'd she'd previously not even considered in that scene when she was looking at all the Princes wondering who'd become the 4th King, is suddenly in contention for the throne by her hand (because she has removed evidence of his imperfection).
I don't think Soo is actually 'seeing' that I think it's how we understand her realisations.

I don't agree that it's a hallucination because she had a premonition of Gwangjong in episode 6 and was clueless of which prince and now seeing Wang So up at the altar with all those glory, it's pretty suitable that the vision came at that juncture.

For me I don't see any of those as 'visions' or premonitions, I think they are her thoughts while she is remembering things that she knows from history and trying to place people that she now knows in real life in those places. I think that's why we don't see the face of the person during the 'premonition' because she herself doesn't know, so it's a placeholder. She knows something happens, her brain is busy trying to remember the things that she's buried in her memory and her 'visions' are her way of making sense of the resurfacing thoughts.
