Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 7

Working in the palace may have its downfalls, but when it has perks, it has perks. Su gets to know the princes a little bit better, and the princes get to know her and her bubbly attitude even more than before. She makes an impression on everyone she meets, that’s for sure—but with the hearts of at least two men (and counting), these relatively uncomplicated days might soon seem like a faraway dream.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Su tries out her new court lady digs to face Court Lady Oh (who I’d mistaken as a concubine—in reality, she’s sanggung, the highest attainable rank for a court lady, charged with managing the palace), who asks Su about her knowledge of herbs.

She’s more than happy to tell her superior about how much she knows about both herbs and cosmetics, but when the court lady asks her whether she can read and write, Su shrinks considerably as she murmurs, “No.”

Outside, she finds So waiting, and is chipper as ever as she tells him about her new appointment and how great she’ll be at it—did he know she was good with makeup? She also acknowledges that the whole affair with the king must’ve been shocking for him, but wasn’t it great that she didn’t have to marry him?

Suddenly, So grabs her bandaged wrist. “You could have died,” he finally says. “If the cut were any deeper, you would have.” Su’s smile disappears as she somberly says that she didn’t die, but that’s not good enough for So, who tears into her about scarring herself and the ramifications of becoming a court lady, since she might never be able to leave the palace now. If that’s the case, he asks, why didn’t she just marry the king?

“I don’t know!” she answers in her defense. She tells him that she just couldn’t go through with it, and knew that only she could save herself. Tears well up in her eyes as she tells him this, but So just answers by calling her a fool. Then, his soft underbelly shows as he adds, “Don’t think about doing that again. I won’t ever forgive you.”

So gives her a pessimistic tour of one of the palace lakes, explaining the rigors of palace life and how everyone within its walls is alone. Relentlessly optimistic, Su says she’ll be fine since she’s not alone, and indicates the prince standing next to her as proof.

She’s confident that no matter what happens, she’ll be able to endure, and even So is inclined to believe it just based on her positive attitude. Though he doesn’t resist quipping that palace life certainly won’t be boring with her around now, he can’t help but smile once he’s turned away from her.

Princess Yeonhwa has a candlelight chat with her brother Wook, telling him that she’s looking into another match for him. Wook says one arranged marriage was enough, but Yeonhwa feels deeply about this issue—if he doesn’t marry advantageously, then they may as well let Queen Sinmyeongsunseong drive their family out of the palace.

It seems like she’s alluding to the queen’s dark past since Wook says he’s forgotten it, and he advises Yeonhwa to do the same. But she keeps going, insisting that since third prince Yo entered into a political marriage, he must have eyes on the throne. If the evil queen drives Crown Prince Mu out, then her and her brother’s future is obvious: “We die, or we get cast out.”

Wook switches topics slightly, and asks if Yeonhwa still likes So. She replies that she would like anyone who can help her, whether that be So or anyone else. “Whether it’s an arranged marriage or I’m sold off, I will not enter into a marriage that does not help you,” she adds, making it clear that her endgame is to see Wook crowned as king.

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Mu mulls over his own future as Astronomer Choi treats him for his illness. That same illness caused him to miss another morning assembly with the king, causing the crown prince to worry that he might be dethroned.

Astronomer Choi does his best to cheer the crown prince up, assuring him that he was born under the star of an emperor—he wouldn’t con the nation about something so huge, so all the crown prince needs to do is focus on his illness.

We’re introduced to Grand General PARK SOO-KYUNG (Sung Dong-il) and his daughter, PARK SOON-DEOK, who wears men’s armor and who seems, for all intents and purposes, to be a warrior. Her relationship with her father is adorable, as she refuses to give him the skin of a bear she presumably killed, claiming that it’s for someone else.

They’ve arrived at the palace, and Grand General Park goes straight to see King Taejo. From their discussion, it sounds as if fourth prince So was once in General Park’s care, and he’s the one who taught the prince martial arts. It’s clear that he thinks highly of So, enough to suggest that were it not for the scar on his face, he’d make a fine crown prince.

After the general and Astronomer Choi have a thoroughly ajusshi-like verbal sparring session, we find all the princes having a bit of fun. Split into teams of four, they each hoist their champion onto their shoulders (for Yo’s team, it’s fourteenth prince Jung, and for Crown Prince Mu’s, it’s tenth prince Eun) to do “battle” with the other team’s champion.

Yo eyes So on the other team specifically as he says that he won’t lose today, and both teams rush each other in an attempt to knock the other’s champion off balance. There’s laughs and smiles all around.

Next we see the princes at their studies, but before we have time to figure out what’s going on, we cut to So (in his team outfit from earlier, strange) and Grand General Park doing some catching up. Though So insists that he’s been occupying his brain during his time at the palace, the grand general cavalierly mentions all those men So killed before setting them on fire.

“They all deserved to die,” So states, but it’s clear that the general isn’t so convinced. Despite the fact that he taught So how to kill, he clarifies that he only did so in order for So to have the power to protect someone else, and he didn’t intend for him to use those powers for murder.

So still insists that what he did was just because it helped the royal family (and thus the nation), leading the general to ask what’s keeping him in the palace. He doesn’t get a straight answer out of So, and seems to know that all the answers So gives him aren’t all that truthful.

He knows that only one prince will remain in the palace, and that’s the prince who will sit on the throne. Again he asks what So’s real reason for staying in the palace is, but So gives him a silent look rather than an answer.

Court Lady Oh and Su go to check in on Queen Sinjeong, who’s been suffering from chronic headaches lately. Su is as bubbly as ever as she tells the queen that she’s happy in her new appointment, and offers to make her more soap if she liked the last batch.

But before she can step in to adjust the queen’s makeup, Court Lady Oh sends her out, since she’s still too new to attend to a queen. Once they’re alone, Queen Sinjeong admits her genuine concern for the court lady, who she knows suffers from chronic stomach pain. She wants to arrange for her to see the royal doctor, but Court Lady Oh politely demurs.

Su ends up drawn to the sounds of a man screaming, and it turns out to be Crown Prince Mu. Shirtless, his torso and arms are covered with angry red sores, and he screams that it feels like insects are crawling over his body. Su seems to recognize the symptoms of eczema, and rushes to stop the prince from applying cold water to his skin, which would only make it worse.

The crown prince angrily grabs her by her clothes for her interference, but is calmed somewhat when Su asks if his condition gets worse after eating certain foods, or after sweating. Now that he’s listening, Su advises him to only take baths in hot water, and looks through the available herbs to make a concoction she can apply topically to soothe his symptoms.

Court Lady Oh sees this and throws a fit, which includes throwing Su to the ground. She punishes Su by having her hold up heavy medical texts while kneeling, though she’s the slightest bit interested in how Su knew to use peppermint for itching. Su explains that she knows how to treat it because her mother suffered from the same illness, but Court Lady Oh warns her never to speak of the crown prince’s illness to anyone. She seems to be coming from a caring place, at least.

Su is sent to water the plants in the garden, unaware that she’s thrown water onto a napping Prince So. He hears her grumbling about how she doesn’t like her job, and when she mentions running away, he makes himself known: “Run away? Where do you think you can hide from the king of Goryeo?”

She blusters that she didn’t actually mean it, and So seems to know this. He hears her out as she complains that she has so much talent that’s just being overlooked here, and catches her slip about being right about how to treat the crown prince.

He warns her to be careful about what she says, since another slip might land her in a much worse place than Damiwon Palace. She gives him tips about how the crown prince can manage his illness, and he puts to bed her groundless worry that Court Lady Oh went too far with her—with the crown prince’s life on the line, Court Lady Oh actually let her off easy.

Then, with a smile, he adds that based on what he’s seen with her watering skills, she’s not so much overflowing with talent as she is lacking talent. He proceeds to give her some tips on naming plants in order to help them grow, and seems to be coming up with tree names on the fly to try and cheer her up.

So then tells her about a tree he named when he was in Shinju, though he also tells her of how he burned it down on a cold night to ward off wolves. But then he abruptly switches to a much lighter tone as he pokes Su in the head and tells her not to think about running—she should commit to the choice she’s made and work hard.

She does as he instructed and throws herself into her work, however exhausting. She’s still a bit clumsy, and Wook steals moments of her time before Court Lady Oh can notice. Awwwww. Just seeing him seems to re-energize Su.

Su makes some sort of poultice for tenth prince Eun’s fingers, though we don’t know why. He’s annoyed at having to leave it, until Su informs him that if that herb is left on until the first snow falls, then the wearer’s first love will come to them. He looks at Su and smiles, thinking that he’ll finally have some luck then.

Wook comes upon Su trying to practice reading and writing, and corrects her mistakes. This is the first he’s heard about her not being able to read, so when he asks her how she was able to read his poem, she tells him that Lady Hae read it for her. His face falls at that, as he says to himself that he owes his late wife.

He watches her continue to try writing and laughs, eventually covering her hand with his own so he can help her write properly. She’s too busy staring at his close proximity to notice what he’s doing with the paper, and he draws even closer to her as they start their next character: his name, Wook. “It means the rising sun,” he adds, and she smiles.

The smile leaves him when he notices the scar on her wrist, now old, and he ties a bracelet onto her wrist to cover it. The red thread is to protect her from misfortune, and the jade symbolizes a happy relationship. “Please promise me… that you will never take it off,” he says.

Su looks up at him and nods, breaking out into a small smile. Wook assures her that he’ll return her to where she belongs, and tells her to wait for him. Then, he leans forward and kisses her on the forehead, causing her to really smile. D’aww.

She studies the character that stands for his name that night, and thinks on the meaning behind it. She also studies her new bracelet, and mulls over how she’s happy to wait, because she likes Wook. “If I’m with him… I think I would be okay being Hae Su, and not Go Ha-jin.”

Baek-ah gets caught drawing pictures of the common people by a common girl, who calls him out for looking down on them and mocking their suffering. But she’s not so common after all, since she wears an expensive trinket, and the men attending her call her “Princess.” She must be in hiding.

It’s tenth prince Eun’s birthday, and the princes all gather for a ceremonial dinner and round of drinks. Wook spends his time not-so-subtly looking to spot Su from the crowd of attending court ladies, while Eun’s brothers (under Crown Prince Mu’s direction) switch out the alcohol Eun’s drinking for something that’s probably much stronger.

Princess Yeonhwa organized the event, and makes it known that she’ll be married off soon to a powerful family far outside the palace. Yo is not happy, and Eun doesn’t know any better, since he gets wasted in no time at all.

Yo drags Yeonhwa out to tell her to just come to him rather than be married off (yes, he means it exactly the way you wish he wasn’t), since he knows that she wants to make her brother, Wook, the king. But if that happened, she’d still only be a princess—if she married him, she’d be queen.

For as mean as Yeonhwa can be, she aptly fires back that she wouldn’t be Yo’s first wife, so this whole queen talk doesn’t really hold much water. Would he give up his other wives for her? “I don’t give up what’s mine just to get a girl,” Yo growls, before pulling her in against her will. Then, he leans in to kiss her…

But thankfully So sees and interrupts before he can. Yo leaves in a huff, and So tells Yeonhwa to take Yo off her balancing scales (implying that she’s weighing all her options), because she won’t get what she wants from Yo. She counters that if he doesn’t want her to marry Yo, he should offer her something better: “Do you not want to step onto my scale?” Every time she comes onto him I feel like hitting her with a rolled-up newspaper.

After being given leave by Court Lady Oh to throw her own party for Eun, Su sets up decorations, replete with her own chibi drawings of the prince, she finds Eun drunkenly stumbling back to his quarters. He’s so drunk he sees three of her, and she just shakes her head.

Thirteenth prince Baek-ah and fourteenth prince Jung also leave the party, only to come face to face with a bear… or rather, the general’s daughter, Soon-deok, wearing her bear pelt. Baek-ah recognizes her immediately, and she just brushes past them with a surly look on her face, intent on getting to her target.

Eun is over the moon when Su shows him the party spread she’s prepared for him, and is more than happy to wear the silly birthday hat she’s made for him. Su thanks him for being the first friend she made in Goryeo, and tells him she has an even more special gift: She sings “Happy Birthday” for him, while adding some flourishes of her own. Wait, is that… the robot? Is she doing the robot?

So sees the display and laughs, much to Princess Yeonhwa’s ire. The other princes soon come upon them, with Crown Prince Mu revealing that he was in on the plot to let Court Lady Oh let Su take the day. It’s hilarious how all the princes get after ninth prince Won for comparing Su to a gisaeng, even though he meant it in the good way. (Gisaeng were known for their singing and dancing, which wasn’t a very common practice for noble ladies.)

But the boys all want her to sing for them too, even though Eun would rather keep her all to himself. Su obliges, and they all fall silent as she launches into a simple, yet thoroughly modern song. So and Wook seem most entranced by her, but it seems safe to say that all the boys have now fallen under her spell.

So seems especially moved, and once he becomes aware of it, he awkwardly leaves. A morose-looking Soon-deok watches from beneath her bear suit—is she looking at Eun? I can’t tell.

Jealous over Su’s little display, Princess Yeonhwa tries to send her off when the boys aren’t looking. Su doesn’t take kindly to the princess reminding her of her place, but luckily, Crown Prince Mu intervenes. It was he who gave Su permission to throw the party, because Eun enjoys spending time with her. That was the present he thought to give to his little brother.

Princess Yeonhwa acts nice as she takes her leave, but not before shooting Su a terrible glare. The crown prince and Su get to share a friendly moment, with him thanking her for helping him, and Su promising to help him in the future if he ever needs it.

Eun gets his presents next, and while some are toys (which he loves), Jung gifts him a book, which he’s much less happy about. Wook and Su smile at each other as Eun opens his gifts, but then they all get a shock when Soon-deok, still dressed as a bear, lays a paw on Eun’s shoulder.

It takes a moment for Eun to recognize her as Grand General Park’s daughter, and she stutters that the pelt is for him as she hands it over. She stutters enough for it to seem like a problem, and Eun breaks her poor heart by not liking her gift. (From the sound of it, she used to gift him bear pelts when they were younger, which he didn’t even like back then.)

So takes some time to himself, but he can’t stop from thinking about Su. Baek-ah tries to bring him back to the festivities, and resorts to pulling him back when So doesn’t want to go.

Inside, Yo seems to deliberately ask Eun what gift So gave him, only for Eun to reply that it was enough that So even came. Yo claims that there’s a special present only So could give before whispering something to Eun, only for him to reply that So wouldn’t give him something like that. I wonder what game Yo’s playing.

Eun runs over to Su to ask if she knows anything about the gift, and if she can help him get it. That’s when Baek-ah drags So back into the party, and he can’t help but smile a little when he catches Su smiling at him.

Yo puts So on the spot for not getting a gift, so So offers to get his younger brother anything he wants in return. Eun makes him promise, and once he does, Eun innocently asks: “Show me your face without the mask!” So that’s what Yo suggested. What a douche.

Crown Prince Mu admonishes Eun for asking for such a gift, and Eun ends up implicating Su in the plot, because he can’t seem to take a hint. So relents and carefully unties his mask in front of everyone.

Revealing his whole face, his scarred face, causes Princess Yeonhwa’s hand to go to her mouth in shock. So locks eyes with Su before he finally can’t take anymore and leaves. Yo laughs, and Yeonhwa demands that Eun apologize to his older brother. Crown Prince Mu admonishes the lot of them, but mostly Yo, for exploiting people’s weak spots far too often.

Yo scoffs at the crown prince’s words, and wonders aloud if he must’ve taken it personally when he said Mu’s in-laws were too lowly, and that he had a lot of nerve to remain as crown prince. Yikes.

Su chases after So, who ends up taking out his frustration on her. She tries to get him to stay so that he can hear Eun’s apology or else he’ll rip all the brothers apart, but So uses the hand she lays on his own to push her up against a column.

“Look at me. Look at me properly!” he commands, face to face with her now. “That look… that look in your eyes… I hate it so much that it makes me crazy.”

Su can only stare at him with that look, and he stares right back.

COMMENTS

Way to go, Eun. You’re young, but you’re not so young that you wouldn’t understand social cues, or the difference between right and wrong. It would’ve made more sense if he was still drunk, but he seemed to sober up rather quickly between the first round of festivities and the third—why’d he have to go and do that? And just when So was trying to be an accommodating older brother, too.

It feels like So gets kicked every time he’s even remotely happy, which is more of a reason for him to turn his back against the world than if he were to get kicked every time he was down. Every moment of happiness has to be earned, and it always comes at a cost, so it figures that So would be extra wary of opening up to others and becoming vulnerable. And though Yo might disagree, what So did in unmasking himself took more guts than it would’ve taken to just keep his mask on. He made a promise, and he had his pride to consider. Now, all bets are off.

This now seems like a minor issue when there’s such systemic editing problems going on, but I do wish the production had been a bit braver with So’s scar. Though the show established how unwanted any bodily flaws are among royalty, enough to justify why So would be ashamed of even light scarring on his face, it’s not enough to even distract from how pretty he is. I totally realize that’s hardly a valid complaint, but it would’ve been truly tragic if the scar was more than just a couple scratches, enough for So to feel like he had to hide that ugliness from the world. Right now, we have to kind of put ourselves in the time period to understand just how big of a deal that scar is—of course, it wouldn’t be pretty in any time period. Maybe it’s just that Lee Jun-ki sells it too well, so on this side of the screen I’m just left to think that the scar isn’t as distracting as it seems meant to be. Again, hardly a complaint, I know.

I like that this episode more or less established So’s crush on Su, and for once, warranted an actual flashback montage of their moments together. We needed to be reminded that they did have these meaningful moments, and it would make sense that So didn’t think much of them until his new feelings came to light. Now, he remembers every moment because it means something, which means trouble is bound to brew for the too-cute Wook and Su couple. (That calligraphy scene? Stick a fork in me, I was done.)

It’s a bit harder to reconcile the vulnerable So we’ve kinda sorta come to know with the cold-hearted, brutal prince that he can be, and nothing brought that more into focus than So’s conversation with Grand General Park. Though we barely got to see General Park, it became clear that his moral compass operates much differently than So’s—and that So, even when reminded of this, would choose to stand by his horrific actions without even a shred of remorse. It didn’t seem like false bravado as much as So being fully convinced that what he did was just and good, which is actually more frightening than if he was just putting up a front. Don’t let the dark side have you, So!

On the other hand, it was refreshing to see Su having more interaction with the princes, which helped to justify their attentiveness toward her. While it’s still strange to think of the levelheaded crown prince temporarily losing his mind, it served to help him see that Su only ever means well, effectively netting her another strong ally. Plus, that birthday party was adorable, and even more so because the crown prince sanctioned it. Regardless, Eun’s going to have to work to make up for what he just pulled, birthday or no. Good luck.

Does anyone get why his reaction is so extreme when Su has already seen his face uncovered? I feel like it should be less extreme since she already saw the scar before and she wasn't horrified.

I think it may be because his feelings have changed. Earlier he threatened her and she was kind of scared (by the threat I'd imagine, not the scar), and retreated, but this time she kept looking straight at him. Before he wouldn't have cared so much about how she felt seeing it than how he felt having it seen by anyone, but now he clearly does care about how she, in particular, sees him.

He was at the point where he was starting to realize that he cares more for Hae-soo than he thought he did (as shown by his thoughts when he was sitting alone by the lake throwing pebbles) and like Zoe says in the comments, he now cares about how she sees him and what she thinks about him.

When she first saw his face without the mask, she was a stranger to him - he couldn't care less whether she lived or died. However, now things are different for him. He cares.

Not just this, it's also the way she looks at him. When he unmasked himself, his siblings either looked at him like he was some sort of freakshow, looked away in revulsion and horror, or averted their gazes out of respect and a refusal to be party to his humiliation. Hae-soo is the only person who looked at him with compassion, empathy and saw past the scar, something the people closest to him never did, when they by all means should have.

He is visibly taken aback by what he sees in her eyes and what that sparks off. All his life (since he acquired the scar) he's been judged for it, and no one has been able to look at him despite the scar and still see him. And he's come to accept that perhaps no one will be able to, and he's developed a coping mechanism for it in the way he behaves and reacts to people.

He literally has no idea how to cope with her being able to just look at him and see him for who he really is, and hence his extreme reaction with his line about "hating the look in her eyes like crazy".

Beautifully said. After reading your comment I feel enlightened a bit. I also think that So hated the look in Soo's eyes because it proved that not everyone was as bad as he thought of and it caused a spark of hope in his heart. And he hated to be hopeful because everytime he got hopeful, he got kicked by reality. That's why he said he hated it like crazy because it made him hopeful and thus, vulnerable.

I'm rewatching and I had a thought. The little boy she goes to save in the beginning is called Eun Wol. I wonder if he's the reincarnation of Eun, who's being portrayed much like a little boy younger than his age, and is the first person she sees - also in the water - when she surfaces in Goryeo. I like thinking that if she goes back to the future, she'll meet not just the reincarnation of So but of all the princes.

Wow, that would be an awesome twist if all of them are in the present, especially as brothers.

You and other commentors are great at noticing similarities. Nothing even comes to my mind until someone mentions it. I think I'm looking at this as a saguek and forget 90% of the time that she is a person from the future. It makes me annoyed at myself coz I love investigation/mystery stories and can catch even the minute things but I'm missing a lot of connections here. Maybe I'm too wrapped up So/Su or it's all LJK?

Honestly, you're probably better off not reading too much into it. You should have seen how off-track I got with W! I tend to over-think and over-analyze when it comes to kdramas, thinking the writers are smarter than they really are. I have to remind myself this isn't Game of Thrones (I post a lot on the westeros.org forum).

Sometimes it pays off though. I've been following the Cheese in the Trap webtoon just to discover the real ending, and a lot of my hypothesizing about the hand and Inha's role, and how Jung can change, appears to be coming true now that the end is finally in sight.

So true! But often a waste of time. I persisted in thinking the writer for W, for instance, was writing sci-fi, and thus had a handle on the "many worlds" theory from quantum physics. Instead, while it had a lot to say about free will and the writing process, there was practically no sci-fi at all. Just fantasy. So I got way off track.

@Barbrey - I have a lot of episodes to catch up on for W. I did skim through the recaps here and found the story kinda confusing. After reading about your experience, I will just pay attention to the main details and discard the rest. Not as committed to that series as I'm to Scarlet Heart or LJK.

Good plan, Lin_K.

That's a nice theory since Ji Mong is also in both time period. Although it would seem pretty much like Splish Splash Love where everyone was reincarnated in the future.

I don't think being like Splish Splash should prevent them from using it again, as I've seen it before as well in other novels. I don't think it would be everyone myself, just the princes. Or maybe that's just what I hope! But let's see,

Ji Mong the astronomer reincarnates as a begger/tramp
10th Prince Eun reincarnates as a little drowning boy
Wang So reincarnates as the little boy's older brother who pulls her out of the water as the eclipse in the future ends.

The rest gather round as she comes to, and they all sail off on one of those boats into the sunset and have a barbecue. :)
LOL. Well, one can dream...of being Hae Soo!

It is okay for them to use that kind of ending troupe too. I just feel like that kind of ending so unsatisfying though. Unless we get an extended version of that and not just stop at the part which they meet and viola, viewers will just have to think they ended up together and lived happily ever after (like being endgame with the reincarnation is the totally the same as ending with the person they were totally in love with that's left in the past time period.)

(like being endgame with the reincarnation is the totally the same as ending with the person they were totally in love with that’s left in the past time period.)

This I agree with completely. Though I love the meeting-in-the-future/through-the-ages trope, I too would like it to be extended to see why it still works between these two characters. What bothers me re: this trope is the idea that just because the person has the same face, they're necessarily the same person. That's because people and their personalities are inevitably shaped by their environment and experiences, so if the person in the future hasn't had the exact same experiences as their past self, then how can they possibly be the same person? We've heard it about Su in fact, how different she's been since nearly drowning, "as if she's a different person"- which she is. If So's reincarnation did not have a scar and wasn't shunned for it, or sold as a hostage, or had that fraught relationship with his mother, then how can he possibly be So? I hope even if that is the ultimate ending, we get a longer sequence detailing the present, instead of having to accept it on faith that they're all still the same people and thus it is destined.

0

I agree with what you said about being with the reincarnation person. Unless the person remembers his/her past life then that's okay I guess.

0

I don't think I'd feel unsatisfied with it myself. It fits the historical context. The real Wang So spent the last third of his life as a devout Buddhist and almost ruined the economy building temples to Buddha. Some historians believe he was trying to repent and make up for the bloodshed in the earlier part of his reign. We've already had a few characters in the story tell him that it would take years to be forgiven.

So in our story we have the love of his life tell him that she's an incarnation of a woman from the future. She disappears or dies suddenly one day. I can see this being the impetus for his Buddhism devotion if he wants to see her again.

But it takes a thousand years of various reincarnations to rub out the stain for all those people he killed or had killed. So no he won't remember, no he won't be exactly the same person, but I pegged him as her soulmate (if such a thing exists) the moment he figured out the emoji.

Ha - but I am literally getting ahead of myself. We'll have to wait and see.

0

@Barbrey

Wow I just remembered the general telling Wang So that killing that many people will take thousands of years to rub off.

Maybe after 1000 years he'll be reincarnated and be reunited with Hae Soo in the modern world...

I really hope the ending isn't a sad and tragic one. Because once is already enough with the original series.

SPOILER FOR ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE

@Zoe - I will be okay as long as the reincarnation of So has memory of the past life in Goryeo with Hae Su. It was used in Arang and I loved it. They were born again as children, grew up in the same village, and fell in love again as adults; and they had memory of their past life all the time :)

0

@Lin_K

Actually in Arang the guy had no memory, but the girl did. Because the guy drank the "soup" that makes you forget your past life, but the girl didn't. But they grew up together and fell in love again. :)

0

@cherryarrow - that's exactly the scene I was thinking of but I couldn't remember how many years it was. That's one of the scenes that got me thinking this way.

@YP - SPOILER FOR ARANG

No, Eun Oh knew everything that happened in the past. In the last scenes, he is pretending that he doesn't remember to annoy Arang. That was my interpretation from his expressions.

0

@Lin_K

Really?? That's how you saw it?? Hmm interesting... I've never looked at that way. Well he did drink that soup makes people forget their past, Eun Oh didn't remember Arang when they were children too...

SPOILER FOR ROOFTOP PRINCE

Rooftop Prince traumatized me because the prince fell in love with the reincarnation of Bu Yong. When I saw the extent of poor Bu Yong's sacrifice, it broke my heart and I felt jealous of her reincarnation on her behalf.
Thinking of Bu Yong and her scar, she's kind of the female version of So - but being a female she sadly lived a far more restricted life.

@Barbery

I like the whole Buddhism thing too. I did a bit of research on Wang So after the drama aired and when I found out Wang So was a devout Buddhist in the later part of his life, and was responsible for the construction of many temples, I was totally hoping that the drama would end up incorporating it in the end, to show his love, devotion and longing for her.

0

I would be okay with a happy ending in the future troupe so long as they did a good job, and it didn't feel sloppily tacked on at the very end.

Go Hae Jin and Hae Su are played by the same actress, even though they tried to make the 21st century girl look different from the Goryeo lady. And as Wook pointed out, she is different. So, even if Wang So reincarnates, I would hope that it is his "soul" that gets placed into a modern day man (played by LJK, of course!), so Wang So would look like the modern-day version of himself. I wouldn't mind that at all. *SWOON*

0

omg, wow, what a great catch, I need to rewatch the episodes clearly. And you're right, I don't think it's a coincidence, because why choose that very name. I heard the original SH had a second season in modern times, though apparently it wasn't based on any novel and I don't know if it starred any of the original actors-- but I'd LOVE to see them all in a modern setting as well. But if So really has a reincarnated version, I'm fairly sure all the other princes will too.

I hope so! Let's face it, we are probably not going to get So and Su happily ever after in Goryeo, because of the historical record, and because from what I've seen on this thread, neither the book or the original drama end that way. (That doesnt mean it couldn't but it's very unlikely). To my way of thinking, that means a happy ending in the future if there is a happy ending at all.

If Hae Soo does change history (I know she doesn't in the original but let's assume she does here), then if/when she returns, things will be different.

We saw her boyfriend with her friend betraying her for instance. What if that story line is still there, but instead the bodies have changed. It's Lady Hae and Wook! Karma - this time these two really do find each other, Su's the one that's felt the pain, but who couldn't forgive them?

It also ties in feally well with Su doing Lady Hae's makeup, and doing her friend's as well. I kind of like this. I hope they're going here.

interesting... in the 6th episode when she fainted after cutting her hand, she had some visions of someone dead in the water. It is either the king or the crown prince I think... and maybe this event will represent the point where everything will go downhill and where she will start to face the biggest challenges by trying to save the princes lives just like when she went to save the little boy in the first episode when a challenge of ending up in the 10th century started... see the connection? I hope I somehow explained well what was on my mind or I might as well be over-thinking :P

Yes this show has too many flaws.
But then despite that, I am still going to watch this till the end. Not only because of LJK who's been doing great portraying So's character but i'd love to see how the story progress.

I am excited also to see the turnaround of events regarding Su's affection from Wook to our 4th prince So. I love how it all began from friendship then eventually escalate to love. Now that both Su and So are in the palace, looking forward to more of their scenes together.

Seriously, can somebody please put the ritual mask of the assassins to YeonHwa's face because it really suits her. such a mean girl. haha.

Hoping for better episodes in the weeks ahead. \^0^/

Lee Jun Ki himself is dope, lol. I've been a long time fan and every drama that I've seen him in (and finished) I would recommend. I hope new fans do watch his past projects too as they are really great dramas. LJK is a very talented actor. The ones I've seen that I highly recommend are:
My Girl (rewatched 3 times, still an old favourite)
Time Between Dog & Wolf (pretty dope)
Iljimae (epic)
Arang & The Magistrate (pretty awesome)
Two Weeks (full of suspense and thriller. As the title suggests, the drama spans 2 weeks so you can imagine how fast paced it is)

Gunman in Joseon is on my list to watch so can't recommend yet. I dropped Scholar WWTN very early on, so I don't recommend.

King and the Clown - 2005 - I've been a diehard fan of his ever since and never looked back. His first major role, but he was so perfect, and also the role that shot him to Hallyu stardom. Till this day his character Gong Gil still haunts me and I still watch it on some nights and proceed to cry myself to sleep afterwards.

Don't know whether I'd recommend it for new fans though. I told one of my friends to watched it since she recently discovered LJG through SHR, and she told me she can't unsee him as that character now. Although I feel that it's such a pivotal role in his career, I can't imagine someone claiming to be his diehard fan if they've never watched it?

I think the first time So likes Soo is when they sit together watching the stars and it start snowing.
So even went to Ji Mong's room and he said he can see stars from there, unlike his room. He remembered what Soo said about the stars.
Then in 7th ep, watching Soo singing, it was the first time he realized that he falls in love with Soo.

But I still can't figure out the line "I hate it like crazy" actually means. Maybe that eyes makes him more realized how much he falls for her and he hates it because he's not yet believe in love at that moment despite of his traumatic.

When he's watching Soo singing, after he got that feeling, he leaves the venue. And sit beside the lake, still thinking Soo and then try to deny his feeling.

This is my first time I watch LJK's drama and this is the first drama that drives me crazy. I can't help to watch it over and over again, and search everything related to this drama. Never have this feeling before.
To be honest, at first I watched this to see KHN, not LJK. But then I found that LJK's character is making me crazy, like I can feel all his sorrows and wanna take away his pain.

I have to admitted that LJK should win awards for his role. Some scenes that really hits me is when:
- So arrived to palace and come to his mother's rooms. It's like a son that missed his mother so much but then got rejected.
- So came to his mother's room after he killed the monks. Those tears...
- Soo saw him without mask while taking bath
- At the very moment he realized he falls in love with Soo
- So took off his mask in front of his brothers, sister and Soo
- So saying "I hate it like crazy" to Soo

LJK really makes So character alive and hypnotized us. At first I though I was crazy to have this feeling. But after reading all these comments, I realized I'm not the only one.

The feeling that I got when I watched and rematched this episode is that So feels abased because of his scar. He hates the look on people's faces whenever they see the scar on his face, as if they were seeing a hideous monster (i.e. the episode that he poured out his tortured treatment by the Kang clan to his beloved Mother about how the Kang mistress would come to her senses calling him a hideous monster and locking him up).
The look on Soo's face seems like that of surprise/fear but perhaps So does not wish to see that expression from someone that he likes, especially when she is looking at him.

Agreed with you. So start to Soo when they see stars together. Afterthat he always looking for Soo like in lady hae funeral and when her tea serving with othet court lady. I think he said that he hates the look in her eyes, becouse he realize that he fall for her, it makes him feel weak or fear of refusal

I don't know why but I only just noticed that Gwangjong is the Fourth King of Goryeo. There are two before him and after Taejo, but their ruling periods are extremely short (Hyejong- 2 years and Jeongjong- 4 years), as opposed to Gwangjong's 26 years of reign. Which is probably why Hae Soo only remembers Gwangjong since it's far too back a time in history and only prominent leaders would make a dent in the future school curriculum. But if the series does indeed span some 20 odd years then it's possible to see all three ascensions after Taejo. But I wonder who Hyejong and Jeongjong are supposed to be. Is one of them Crown Prince Mu? And I can't think of who else could possibly be a serious contender after him except perhaps either Yo or Wook?

I'm interested in seeing how they collapse the time on the show. I think a significant amount of time has gone by, more than it seems, because we get hints of things we haven't seen on screen. Like So mentions Su only brought him lunch "a few times" when I got the impression it had only been once, and it seems to be well-known that So and Su are friendly though we've really only seen a few scenes of them being friends.

Neither the king, Mu or Yo are dead yet and that time period spans at least 6 years before So takes the throne, and I'm assuming from what's been said on thread about the original that she will spend some time with So as king.

She was 25 in the other world; 16 in Goryeo. For symmetry, they might age her up to 25 before she goes back (if she goes back), so if the King dies soon, that would mean she stays nine years in Goryeo, three years into So's 25 year reign.

Much as I love the drama, I don't have faith in the editor, so I'm predicting a somewhat jarring effect in terms of time span.

Okay, I know we all love to hate Yeon Hwa, but I think we have to face the dire *HISTORICAL SPOILER* that she is eventually going to be Wang So’s wife. Needless to say, I’m quite distressed at this prospect. I have to wonder how this will all unfold. *END SPOILER*

And, although we’d rather not dwell on it, I don’t think Wang So is repulsed by her. In Episode 3, he allowed her to dress his wound, and was intensely observing her as she showed him this kindness. In Episode 4, he didn’t directly answer Yeon Hwa’s question about his feelings towards Su, but gently apologized for disrespecting her in front of everyone. He was willing to challenge Yo’s assumption in Episode 5 that So couldn’t get the king to give Yeon Hwa to him. I think what is most telling is in Episode 7, when Yeon Hwa blatantly asks him if he would want to be considered an option for her to marry, the camera cuts away before we hear his reply. Most mysterious. AND, they are both walking TOGETHER (presumably after this conversation) to the pavilion where Su is singing. When So laughs naturally at Su’s antics, he feels Yeon Hwa’s gaze, and quickly stifles his laughter. Her reaction isn’t something he would be worried about if he didn’t care about her at all.

I actually do think Yeon Hwa likes Wang So for whatever reason. Her attraction for him was rather obvious even in episodes 2-4. I’d be curious about their back story (as children). I don’t think she’s quite as ruthless as we may view her. She’s in a precarious position, it’s only natural she’s going to weigh which option gives her the most security (e.g. the conversation in episode 7 she has with Wook).

Wook basically says she always liked him so we have to think there is an attraction there.

I do think she's ruthless but I also think she is one of the most clear-eyed in the series, and her survival instincts are very good based on experience. The general himself says there will only be one king - the other princes will either need to be exiled or executed. It's an unfortunate fact of royal life in many countries that until a strict primogeniture was established, leftover princes had exactly this fate because they were always a threat to the reigning king. This would be particularly true at this time in Goryeo, where each prince is backed by a powerful family on the mother's side looking to gain the kingship for him or herself. (As an aside, in Turkey, they locked up the leftovers in a windowless castle where they rarely saw the light of day, and some emerged as imbeciles years later from deprivation, where factions still tried to use them to take over the throne).

Yeon Hwa is not just being greedy - picking the right prince to marry, or advancing her brother's claim to the throne is a matter of survival. Power is at risk, but so could her life and her brother's life be. She seems to have some idea of what's coming next, as does the general, and as does Ji Mong, who gets that sad look in his eyes often enough when people talk about the brothers' relationships.

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree with you, very lucidly written. I don't think she's being unreasonable given the risks involved. If anything, when Wook asked if she still liked so, and she said she would marry anyone who would help the family, you could tell she was pained to admit that even when she does like So, her marriage cannot be about love, but about strategy.

In a sense, I feel sorry for her. She is clear-eyed and frightfully realistic. But, there's something tragic about knowing your heart will never come first in any decision (ir at all). Such an odd juxtaposition from her brother, Wook.

I also see in Wiki
Yeon Hwa will be Queen: Daemok, half sibling

And maybe the SH writer makes Hae So character from this person

Princess Gyungwagung, daughter of HyeJong and Madam Dae, a royalty from Balhae

0

Required fields are marked *

Maybe. That concubine was actually Wang So's niece, the daughter of the Crown Prince Mu (whose name became Hyejong when he took the throne). But they've already changed a few things, like Wook's wife in the show is a Lady Hae, when in history his wife was a Lady Yoo, his half-sister and I think she was Wang So's full sister. So they might change this too.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

What you have pointed out about Wang So not repulsed by Yeon Hwa is true. He probably always expected to marry a half-sister and Yeon Hwa is one. Also, she is saying outright that she is interested in him. As of episode 6 (or even 7), there is no reason for him to say, "no" to her. But that will change when he falls in love with Hae Soo. If the story follows history, he may end up marrying Yeon Hwa either by being forced into it or out of duty but will remain in love with Hae Soo. I somehow want them to have Yeon Hwa marry Yo instead. If they are adding fictional elements, why not add this one also?

I found out who'do be the next king ??
Gwangjong (925 – 4 July 975), personal name Wang So, was the fourth king of Goryeo.[citation needed] He was known for squashing his political rivals and creating an atmosphere of fear within the political realm at the time.
The prince SO??

There"s two in between. Crown Prince Mu is next for two years, then Yo for 4, and THEN So for 25 years. She doesnt remember Mu and Yo as kings because they didn't leave a mark on history - just a record of being beleaguered by all the powerful families trying to influence or kill them off. Wang So is the one who stops all that by first playing it smart and then destroying the families, so that the fledgeling nation of Goryeo doesn't descend into anarchy and eventually becomes Korea. Wang So's the only famous one of the princes.

For myself, I'm convalescing with a broken leg, and have run out of already-aired dramas that intrigue me. I'm watching ML, MDBC, and JI - all of which I love - but they don't take up enough time! I'm out of novels, out of dramas, and bored so sorry if I'm overposting this last page.

I'd ask for some good recommendations but I've likely seen or tried almost all the modern ones. I don't like sageuks or melos unless they're fast-paced and intriguing (with some romance) like this one, so I'm really open to some suggestions if anyone knows of ones that don't drag. But I think I'm out of luck. Here are the ones I've seen that I liked: Hong Gil Dong, Shine or Go Crazy, Sungkyung Scandal, Gu Family Book, Three Musketeers. I also liked cdramas Prince of Lan Ling and Perfect Couple. If anyone can make recommendations based on these let me know! (FYI - I didn't like Princess' Man, Dong Yi, Moon Embracing the Sun, Empress Ki - all of which dragged for me though I know I'm in a minority, so has to be fast-paced).

Thanks so much! I must be the only person in dramaland, though, who doesn't like Ha Ji Won, Han Hye Joo or Shin Min Ha (and the female lead in Madame Antoine - can't remember her name). These are the only four Korean actresses I don't like and they're in everything! Ha Ji Won always seems blank to me, Shin Min Ah smug, and Han Hye Joo like a deer in the headlights or a fish gulping for air. I've started most of these dramas but got irritated with the female lead.

Ive never heard of Song of the Prince so am off to look it up! Thanks for all the recommendations to everyone up thread. I'm also going to look at Tree with Deep Roots and the Detective movies, and give Arang another try maybe. Shin Min Ah irritates me the least of these actresses.

They say it's like The X-Files meets Saguek. I've never watched The X-Files but I thought Joseon X-Files was so unique when I first saw it. Loved it so much. I'd rate it 10 out of 10. It's up there with Signal in terms of awesomeness. I think DB has recapped this drama.

Since you like cdramas, I'd recommend you check out Taiwanese dramas, if you're open to it. Taiwanese dramas have similar set ups / formats with Kdrama (hence the frequent remakes), so I think it's quite easy to ease into if you're a drama junkie. However, I don't recommend any of the recent ones, as the industry in general has pretty much gone down hill in the recent years, but I defo recommend many of their hit dramas when they were in their prime. My personal favourites are In Time With You (same female lead as Prince of Alan Ling) and Autumn Concerto (a melo but a classic).

I am also curious what changed drastically for Soo to go to So. Also, he is hugging her. Just consoling her? Or something else? Monday cannot come any faster!

What's with those still images that circulate on Instagram showing So-Soo moments (not mean to be spoiler here) that arent't on the last preview (SBS and int version) for episode 8? I read they are from Hongkong version preview. I'm so confused, how many version of preview do we have? Anybody knows?

Moon Lovers has 2 version of preview, SBS version and international (OneTV Asia, Youku, etc) version. Those still images come from Hongkong News, so there's no video for that.

Ritual for rain scene? Any idea what is it for? I think I read somewhere that it's kind of ritual to determine who will be the crown prince but the crown prince is alrd chosen eg. Moo. Or will something happen to Moo that they have to choose the new one? Hmm interesting.. Thanks for sharing..

This rain ritual seems like it is straight out of a novel or movie I've seen before but I just can't place it. A shamanistic practice - the one who brings the rain (life blood to the realm) is blessed and designated leader. I wish I could remember.

My main curiosity is however, who threw garbage at So's face? What's that about?

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm constructing a possible narrative around the rain ritual and the preview.

Wang So apparently has been debarred from the kingship because of his scar. However, in one ritual already, because he replaced the Crown Prince, he has been symbolically associated with the person in Goryeo who will chase away evil spirits from the realm.

Now we have the rain ritual. The person who brings rain successfully should be symbolically the person who will bring prosperity and success to the realm. All the princes want to be identified as such, and can even ask for gifts from the king if they win.

Wang So is possibly debarred from this ceremony because of his scar, and maybe when he goes to participate that's when he's pelted with garbage?

However, Hae Soo covers the scar with make-up and Wang So is allowed to participate, and indeed brings the rain against all expectations.

Suddenly, from an afterthought, he's a threat.

Hae Soo gets in big trouble for covering up the scar. She's intervened and allowed this upset to happen.

So now, symbolically, Wang So has been identified twice in ritual - the one who will chase away evil spirits (the conflicting noble families) and the one who brings prosperity and success to the fledgeling nation and the land. This is what in fact the historical Wang So will go on to do. And these are portents that the royals can't ignore, thereby making him a true focus of enmity.

Wow. I love your theory. Yes I think people throw things at him because eveybody knows he is not allowed to take part in such ceremony. Maybe after that, he gets fixed by Soo and now scarless, he does the ritual and succeeds. I wonder if Soo cries because Wook also blames her for helping So? I always feel Wook silently has his eye on the throne. Things are getting interesting now.

Required fields are marked *

They sure are! You bring up a good point about Wook. There were many societies that would disqualify a candidate from inheriting because of blemishes. They believed an outer blemish indicated a moral blemish and kings were supposed to represent perfect moral character. A culture that believes that way would invest far more meaning into a scar, which is why poor So is damned to malignment and people can justify it to themselves not on the basis of his appearance but on the basis of his morality. Wook is clearly very uncomfortable with scars of any kind, reflecting this mindset I expect. No idea how he'll react, but you're right he might be just as upset as the palace ladies with her.

0

@Barbrey come to think of it, what Soo does to So is basically the same as what Wook does to Soo; both of them tries to cover the scar. But the underlying reason is very different: Wook does that for the sake of his very own comfort, while Soo does that for So's comfort. She never minds the scar at all while Wook can't even look at it more than a second. I think you're right about Wook's mindset to the scar, he believes it's some sort of moral blemish. And now his girl helps to try to cover up that blemish and make it possible for such a morally-flawed person to step onto the crown. I think from this point onward he will start to realize how different he and Soo are and this may serve as the trigger for their breakup. I think it later becomes Wook motivation to prevent such a morally-flawed person to become a king, so he decides to step in for the throne battle. The realization about Su's mindset and this strong motivation may explain why he will eventually choose the throne over Soo.

I don't understand why they never include the pivotal parts of upcoming episode in their preview. For example, the unmasking scene was crucial but it wasn't on the preview. Then these still pictures of So-Soo moment should be one of the important scenes but they don't include that in preview too. SBS' preview still showed us Soo unmasking So while in int version they omitted that and we got shoved by another unnecessary Eun moment with the bear girl. Do they think all int fans care about is the idols? *sigh*
I think showing pivotal scenes in preview will attract viewers to watch the upcoming episode, like now I will definitely watch episode 8 given those still images of So-Soo. That should be one way to increase the viewers rating yet they waste it.

Up till ep 7, reading lots of comments, I think here are the plus n minuses of SH.
(+) LJK, he is the best cast and might be the biggest leverage
Amazing cinematography, very clear and beautiful close-ups, I think among lotsa saeguk I watched, SH is the best
(-) Too many casts, too many roles, too many side stories, no time at all. I think thats why the editing is quite bad, coz maybe at 1st the writing/script should be for longer eps? They need to make too many decisions I guess, about which scenes to trim and who gets more screen time. They just make bad decisions, if only they show what the viewers deemed important than the ratings might not be that low.

Aside from that, I wanna give big round applause for the writer, coz he (or she?) has this brilliant mind to be able to fit a historical fiction from China and redo it to fit in the setting of Korea. I cant stop thinking how the 4th prince got the throne in China and Korea. I guess 4 is the new lucky number :)

SH already made lots of changes compared with BBJX and the real history, so why not make some more by devising a way allowing Soo to reside in Goryeo?? Maybe by exchanging bodies with Yeon Hwa? So Yeon Hwa can do the timejump to the future and probably meet some good guy to marry. Too much living in dramaland makes me delusional I guess xD

And, some might dislike me for saying this, but i cant help the itch so I'll say it anyway. Till ep 5 I'm just fine bout KHN. But now I'm irritated, annoyed, I wanna scratch his face when I saw him onscreen on ep 6 n 7. Pretty face is not enough without backbone. He is swoon-worthy in maybe 2 or 3 eps. Dragging it too long, makes it like eating cake nonstop, sweetness overload that makes me wanna puke. That feeling. I wanna slap him, tell him to grow a backbone, to show some spirit. If he wants to be a contender of LJK, he has to portray a deeper character, not only showing a docile and proper and in overall, good-guy look. And just maybe, YeonHwa became hateful and jealous and cold and overly-calculating, she owed it to her brother, who can't do a proper job as a big brother to protect their family, so she is the one who had to grow a backbone, to be the sword and the shield of the family. She is quite pitiable, really, all situations considered.

Nah I say it all. Now I feel good and gonna catch some sleep.. cant wait for Monday :))

I think the writer has done a fabulous job too. That's where some of the frustration comes from, I think. Production and post-production were handed a first-rate script, and most of us are captivated by the story, but it keeps getting mucked up by some directing choices but mostly editing choices. That's why the gulf between potential and reality is so huge. I'm still greatly enjoying it though.

agree about KHN, he's a great actor but the character is kind of annoying. I'm really hoping that Wook has a darker side to him like many people are theorising because then he'll be more interesting to watch and KHN will be able to reach his full acting potential.

One more thing I noticed before. The clan Hae Soo belongs to calls themselves -twice, so I think we're supposed to notice - the Hae Ha Jin clan. This was a curious combination of names. Her name is (Go) Ha Jin in the modern age, Hae Soo in the medieval. It turns out that the Hae family was the founder of Goguryeo, the largest kingdom on the Korean peninsula predating Goryeo and from which Goryeo gets its own name (and eventually Korea itself). Many of these Haes changed their names to Go as the royal name.

So Go Ha Jin is basically the same name as Hae Ha Jin. And therefore our own Hae (Soo) Ha Jin might be a familial reincarnation back to the most ancient of kingdoms involved in making Korea one nation, and possibly the most royal of any of them. It puts the conflict of the princes for her love on an almost mythological basis - whoever wins her, wins the land?

Okay, in addition, Hae Mo Su marries a river goddess, Yuhwa, and their son Jumong founds Goguryeo. Hae Su is discovered by the river, in the baths it feeds.

Too bad more Koreans aren't watching this because it's playing with their foundation myths that they know and many would recognize, while international viewers like myself have to scrabble around with bits and pieces on the internet to understand the mythical and historical basis to the story they're telling.

Very good analysis Barbrey. This is why I love reading comments in DB, there is always new information anad analysis about this drama I've never thought about. I just realize that the clan's name is Hae Ha Jin when you mentioned it. The play with all the name similarities (little boy Eun Wol, Go Ha Jin) can't be merely coincidental. The script writer is awesome and like others say, I do hope they will release longer episodes in DVD. This drama has so much potential and deserves more love.

Yeah, but with Wang So not LJK! I do get the attraction to him in this drama, however, when I did not find him attractive at all in My Girl. I thought he looked too much like an anime character - an Asian elf - and his ears looked like prosthetics. I don't know why I'm finding him so swoon worthy in this drama but not in that one, and I think it's because the character he's playing intrigues me, and I'm a sucker for a vulnerable bad boy. Suddenly he's hot!

I am amazed he is actually very good as an Actor. His interpretatiom of each character is amazing.

In my opinion, i think the production & the casts actually did a great job compressing a novel into a 20 or 21 episodes.
If maybe they have 30 or 50 episodes more, they wont have a hard time choosing what to show & what to delete on the scenes.
But even though this is the case, the drama conveys what it needs to. That's the reason why beyond the flaws in directing as they say & cut scenes, im totally hooked up in the drama because beyond those flaws, i totaly enjoyed watching it subbed or unsubbed.?
even in movies from novels, they actually produced lots of sequels, like ep 1 to 4 inorder to complete the movie & you have to wait every year to watch the next part.
But here, i just need to wait several days & i can watch it to my hearts content.?

I would love love love to see 30+ or 50+ eps of LJK ;)
Like @Barbrey said, first-rate script and production, is it too much to hope that the team will feel that so many efforts are wasted over and cant go onscreen, so they will consider publishing DVDs for those cut scenes maybe after eps 20 is aired? *praying soo hard to dramagods*
So I can imagine how much better SH would be if those scenes are used as they should. The potential of SH becoming the best saeguk I've watched is huge that I dont want it to fail my expectation

I so agree! I can overlook what's happened up to now but worry bad choices will continue to mar the rest of it, when it definitely has the potential of being the best sageuk I've watched. It's operating on the mythical, historical, medieval and modern levels all at the same time - really a wonderful script that's keeping me guessing.

I find 50 ep drama too long but I agree it should be 30-32 eps. The 20 episodes seeem to be too short for the level of complexity this drama has.

I've not enjoyed saguek dramas except Moon Embracing the Sun and have not watched or finished anything since then until Moon Lovers. I have also avoided Lee Joon Gi's works because he mainly do saguek. I watched 'Faith', a sageuk drama but dropped it midday. I thought that drama was great but somehow it lacked something that made me dropped it. After watching Moon Lovers, I thought 'Faith' would have been a lot better if Lee Joon Gi was the lead.

Now I am officially a LJG fan. Amazingly how he can fully immersed into his character. He is indeed an excellent actor. Now, I don't have to worry what to watch.
1. Iljimae- currenlty enjoying. He is really good in it. What a badass fighter. After this, I have more to watch.
2. The King and the Clown (movie)
3. Time between Dog and Wolf
4. Hero (I've checked Ji Chang Wook is in it.)
5. Arang and the Magistrate
6. Two Weeks
7. Gunman in Joseon
8.Scholar Who Walks the Night

Take a look at the ost lyrics

DAVICHI - FORGETTING YOU

My dear, don’t forget
My unstoppable love

It’s okay even if it’s a little late
If it’s destiny
We will meet again

I.O.I - I LOVE YOU, I REMEMBER YOU

I love you
Words my heart tell you
Thank you
Words that my eyes tell you (eyes tell you)
I’ll always be standing here (standing here)
Remember (remember) Remember (remember)
Remember (I’ll remember)

CHEN, BAEKHYUN, XIUMIN (EXO) - FOR YOU

It’s a different place, a different time
But my love is right
Even by your scent that passes with the wind
I know it’s you

You can pass me by
Because you forgot about me
Until you remember
I will wait for you

In the same place, in the same time, we’re together
You can always come to me, back to your place

Base on the lyrics, I think it's possible if in the end, in present life, Ha jin wakes up from comma, the meet reincarnate of Wang So but he didn't remember her.
But don't know the end of Hae soo in Goryeo, cause in Chinese version, she died.

Nooo.. I will be sad if it happens. Coz if Soo dies then LJK will be brokenhearted. Give him a break, people, he needs it abundantly. Brokenhearted coz no love from Queen mother, father, brother and half-brothers. Pls dont give him another epic heartbreak. That is just so cruel. And not to mention, reincarnation doesnt mean the same person when no memories are retained. Yes it is still favorable compared to no pairing of So-Soo at all, but I do still hope for the ideal So-Soo ending in Goryeo.

Err.. it's posted before i finish my sentence. Lemme continue it here.
But some stories of time travel presents the option to stay in that time period, given some conditions to be met. The drama gotta be more creative, bcos at least from what i see in kdrama combining modern n historical setting, all the drama end up with the person going back to his/her original time period usually with no memories so we are only given the hope or probability that the characters will end up together but it's not onscreen and I have to imagine the process of them falling in love. Only in Arang they do retain the memories so the happily ever after can be continued right away.
I think most kdrama follow the idea of "he/she is my destiny, no matter the time and space we will fall in love and be together again". The only one not following this is My GF is a Gumiho, coz Miho is sumhow the reincarnation of that fire lady but Miho falls in love with different person, not the fire lady's love interest.

To save myself from heartbreak I should stop watching it now.. but my heart cant, its a waste not to stare at LJK profound acting ability onscreen.. *sigh*

Yes, yes, yes!!! I think so too \^0^/ It would be really nice to see them happilly together in the future. The songs allude to it \^0^/

On another note, I'm sad that the ratings for MLSHG are low but it further breaks my heart for the cast when other people rub it in and downplay how, in consolation, it is quite loved by the international audience. It's like kicking someone who's already down :'(

No matter how others see it, this show despite its imperfections connects with me. Not just because of LJK, I like the story and IU and KHN are doing well too. My mind can manage to fill the gaps ^_^

I think it has something to do with this drama time slot. Scarlet heart is aired on similar time slot with Moonlight drawn by clouds (Mon and tues) and we know the latter has started 1 episode earlier so it's reasonable that people tend to watch the latter on TV then maybe go online to watch SH, hence SH rating is low. The replay episode was aired on Wednesday so people could watch it on TV, hence the higher rating.

There is subtitle @evy. But in case it doesn't show, here's the transcript from the wonderful forumer at another site:

So: You...are you not at all affected by this hideous face? Are you acting like this out of pity?
Su: How can you pity someone who's always going on about killing and saving [people]? Whether you have a scar or not, no matter how people see you, the fact that you're a good person is more important to me. (So releases her wrist and she touches his face again) In the end, it's only a single hand-span. Having your whole long life be dark because of this one hand-span...doesn't that seem a bit unfair?
