Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 7

Working in the palace may have its downfalls, but when it has perks, it has perks. Su gets to know the princes a little bit better, and the princes get to know her and her bubbly attitude even more than before. She makes an impression on everyone she meets, that’s for sure—but with the hearts of at least two men (and counting), these relatively uncomplicated days might soon seem like a faraway dream.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Su tries out her new court lady digs to face Court Lady Oh (who I’d mistaken as a concubine—in reality, she’s sanggung, the highest attainable rank for a court lady, charged with managing the palace), who asks Su about her knowledge of herbs.

She’s more than happy to tell her superior about how much she knows about both herbs and cosmetics, but when the court lady asks her whether she can read and write, Su shrinks considerably as she murmurs, “No.”

Outside, she finds So waiting, and is chipper as ever as she tells him about her new appointment and how great she’ll be at it—did he know she was good with makeup? She also acknowledges that the whole affair with the king must’ve been shocking for him, but wasn’t it great that she didn’t have to marry him?

Suddenly, So grabs her bandaged wrist. “You could have died,” he finally says. “If the cut were any deeper, you would have.” Su’s smile disappears as she somberly says that she didn’t die, but that’s not good enough for So, who tears into her about scarring herself and the ramifications of becoming a court lady, since she might never be able to leave the palace now. If that’s the case, he asks, why didn’t she just marry the king?

“I don’t know!” she answers in her defense. She tells him that she just couldn’t go through with it, and knew that only she could save herself. Tears well up in her eyes as she tells him this, but So just answers by calling her a fool. Then, his soft underbelly shows as he adds, “Don’t think about doing that again. I won’t ever forgive you.”

So gives her a pessimistic tour of one of the palace lakes, explaining the rigors of palace life and how everyone within its walls is alone. Relentlessly optimistic, Su says she’ll be fine since she’s not alone, and indicates the prince standing next to her as proof.

She’s confident that no matter what happens, she’ll be able to endure, and even So is inclined to believe it just based on her positive attitude. Though he doesn’t resist quipping that palace life certainly won’t be boring with her around now, he can’t help but smile once he’s turned away from her.

Princess Yeonhwa has a candlelight chat with her brother Wook, telling him that she’s looking into another match for him. Wook says one arranged marriage was enough, but Yeonhwa feels deeply about this issue—if he doesn’t marry advantageously, then they may as well let Queen Sinmyeongsunseong drive their family out of the palace.

It seems like she’s alluding to the queen’s dark past since Wook says he’s forgotten it, and he advises Yeonhwa to do the same. But she keeps going, insisting that since third prince Yo entered into a political marriage, he must have eyes on the throne. If the evil queen drives Crown Prince Mu out, then her and her brother’s future is obvious: “We die, or we get cast out.”

Wook switches topics slightly, and asks if Yeonhwa still likes So. She replies that she would like anyone who can help her, whether that be So or anyone else. “Whether it’s an arranged marriage or I’m sold off, I will not enter into a marriage that does not help you,” she adds, making it clear that her endgame is to see Wook crowned as king.

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Mu mulls over his own future as Astronomer Choi treats him for his illness. That same illness caused him to miss another morning assembly with the king, causing the crown prince to worry that he might be dethroned.

Astronomer Choi does his best to cheer the crown prince up, assuring him that he was born under the star of an emperor—he wouldn’t con the nation about something so huge, so all the crown prince needs to do is focus on his illness.

We’re introduced to Grand General PARK SOO-KYUNG (Sung Dong-il) and his daughter, PARK SOON-DEOK, who wears men’s armor and who seems, for all intents and purposes, to be a warrior. Her relationship with her father is adorable, as she refuses to give him the skin of a bear she presumably killed, claiming that it’s for someone else.

They’ve arrived at the palace, and Grand General Park goes straight to see King Taejo. From their discussion, it sounds as if fourth prince So was once in General Park’s care, and he’s the one who taught the prince martial arts. It’s clear that he thinks highly of So, enough to suggest that were it not for the scar on his face, he’d make a fine crown prince.

After the general and Astronomer Choi have a thoroughly ajusshi-like verbal sparring session, we find all the princes having a bit of fun. Split into teams of four, they each hoist their champion onto their shoulders (for Yo’s team, it’s fourteenth prince Jung, and for Crown Prince Mu’s, it’s tenth prince Eun) to do “battle” with the other team’s champion.

Yo eyes So on the other team specifically as he says that he won’t lose today, and both teams rush each other in an attempt to knock the other’s champion off balance. There’s laughs and smiles all around.

Next we see the princes at their studies, but before we have time to figure out what’s going on, we cut to So (in his team outfit from earlier, strange) and Grand General Park doing some catching up. Though So insists that he’s been occupying his brain during his time at the palace, the grand general cavalierly mentions all those men So killed before setting them on fire.

“They all deserved to die,” So states, but it’s clear that the general isn’t so convinced. Despite the fact that he taught So how to kill, he clarifies that he only did so in order for So to have the power to protect someone else, and he didn’t intend for him to use those powers for murder.

So still insists that what he did was just because it helped the royal family (and thus the nation), leading the general to ask what’s keeping him in the palace. He doesn’t get a straight answer out of So, and seems to know that all the answers So gives him aren’t all that truthful.

He knows that only one prince will remain in the palace, and that’s the prince who will sit on the throne. Again he asks what So’s real reason for staying in the palace is, but So gives him a silent look rather than an answer.

Court Lady Oh and Su go to check in on Queen Sinjeong, who’s been suffering from chronic headaches lately. Su is as bubbly as ever as she tells the queen that she’s happy in her new appointment, and offers to make her more soap if she liked the last batch.

But before she can step in to adjust the queen’s makeup, Court Lady Oh sends her out, since she’s still too new to attend to a queen. Once they’re alone, Queen Sinjeong admits her genuine concern for the court lady, who she knows suffers from chronic stomach pain. She wants to arrange for her to see the royal doctor, but Court Lady Oh politely demurs.

Su ends up drawn to the sounds of a man screaming, and it turns out to be Crown Prince Mu. Shirtless, his torso and arms are covered with angry red sores, and he screams that it feels like insects are crawling over his body. Su seems to recognize the symptoms of eczema, and rushes to stop the prince from applying cold water to his skin, which would only make it worse.

The crown prince angrily grabs her by her clothes for her interference, but is calmed somewhat when Su asks if his condition gets worse after eating certain foods, or after sweating. Now that he’s listening, Su advises him to only take baths in hot water, and looks through the available herbs to make a concoction she can apply topically to soothe his symptoms.

Court Lady Oh sees this and throws a fit, which includes throwing Su to the ground. She punishes Su by having her hold up heavy medical texts while kneeling, though she’s the slightest bit interested in how Su knew to use peppermint for itching. Su explains that she knows how to treat it because her mother suffered from the same illness, but Court Lady Oh warns her never to speak of the crown prince’s illness to anyone. She seems to be coming from a caring place, at least.

Su is sent to water the plants in the garden, unaware that she’s thrown water onto a napping Prince So. He hears her grumbling about how she doesn’t like her job, and when she mentions running away, he makes himself known: “Run away? Where do you think you can hide from the king of Goryeo?”

She blusters that she didn’t actually mean it, and So seems to know this. He hears her out as she complains that she has so much talent that’s just being overlooked here, and catches her slip about being right about how to treat the crown prince.

He warns her to be careful about what she says, since another slip might land her in a much worse place than Damiwon Palace. She gives him tips about how the crown prince can manage his illness, and he puts to bed her groundless worry that Court Lady Oh went too far with her—with the crown prince’s life on the line, Court Lady Oh actually let her off easy.

Then, with a smile, he adds that based on what he’s seen with her watering skills, she’s not so much overflowing with talent as she is lacking talent. He proceeds to give her some tips on naming plants in order to help them grow, and seems to be coming up with tree names on the fly to try and cheer her up.

So then tells her about a tree he named when he was in Shinju, though he also tells her of how he burned it down on a cold night to ward off wolves. But then he abruptly switches to a much lighter tone as he pokes Su in the head and tells her not to think about running—she should commit to the choice she’s made and work hard.

She does as he instructed and throws herself into her work, however exhausting. She’s still a bit clumsy, and Wook steals moments of her time before Court Lady Oh can notice. Awwwww. Just seeing him seems to re-energize Su.

Su makes some sort of poultice for tenth prince Eun’s fingers, though we don’t know why. He’s annoyed at having to leave it, until Su informs him that if that herb is left on until the first snow falls, then the wearer’s first love will come to them. He looks at Su and smiles, thinking that he’ll finally have some luck then.

Wook comes upon Su trying to practice reading and writing, and corrects her mistakes. This is the first he’s heard about her not being able to read, so when he asks her how she was able to read his poem, she tells him that Lady Hae read it for her. His face falls at that, as he says to himself that he owes his late wife.

He watches her continue to try writing and laughs, eventually covering her hand with his own so he can help her write properly. She’s too busy staring at his close proximity to notice what he’s doing with the paper, and he draws even closer to her as they start their next character: his name, Wook. “It means the rising sun,” he adds, and she smiles.

The smile leaves him when he notices the scar on her wrist, now old, and he ties a bracelet onto her wrist to cover it. The red thread is to protect her from misfortune, and the jade symbolizes a happy relationship. “Please promise me… that you will never take it off,” he says.

Su looks up at him and nods, breaking out into a small smile. Wook assures her that he’ll return her to where she belongs, and tells her to wait for him. Then, he leans forward and kisses her on the forehead, causing her to really smile. D’aww.

She studies the character that stands for his name that night, and thinks on the meaning behind it. She also studies her new bracelet, and mulls over how she’s happy to wait, because she likes Wook. “If I’m with him… I think I would be okay being Hae Su, and not Go Ha-jin.”

Baek-ah gets caught drawing pictures of the common people by a common girl, who calls him out for looking down on them and mocking their suffering. But she’s not so common after all, since she wears an expensive trinket, and the men attending her call her “Princess.” She must be in hiding.

It’s tenth prince Eun’s birthday, and the princes all gather for a ceremonial dinner and round of drinks. Wook spends his time not-so-subtly looking to spot Su from the crowd of attending court ladies, while Eun’s brothers (under Crown Prince Mu’s direction) switch out the alcohol Eun’s drinking for something that’s probably much stronger.

Princess Yeonhwa organized the event, and makes it known that she’ll be married off soon to a powerful family far outside the palace. Yo is not happy, and Eun doesn’t know any better, since he gets wasted in no time at all.

Yo drags Yeonhwa out to tell her to just come to him rather than be married off (yes, he means it exactly the way you wish he wasn’t), since he knows that she wants to make her brother, Wook, the king. But if that happened, she’d still only be a princess—if she married him, she’d be queen.

For as mean as Yeonhwa can be, she aptly fires back that she wouldn’t be Yo’s first wife, so this whole queen talk doesn’t really hold much water. Would he give up his other wives for her? “I don’t give up what’s mine just to get a girl,” Yo growls, before pulling her in against her will. Then, he leans in to kiss her…

But thankfully So sees and interrupts before he can. Yo leaves in a huff, and So tells Yeonhwa to take Yo off her balancing scales (implying that she’s weighing all her options), because she won’t get what she wants from Yo. She counters that if he doesn’t want her to marry Yo, he should offer her something better: “Do you not want to step onto my scale?” Every time she comes onto him I feel like hitting her with a rolled-up newspaper.

After being given leave by Court Lady Oh to throw her own party for Eun, Su sets up decorations, replete with her own chibi drawings of the prince, she finds Eun drunkenly stumbling back to his quarters. He’s so drunk he sees three of her, and she just shakes her head.

Thirteenth prince Baek-ah and fourteenth prince Jung also leave the party, only to come face to face with a bear… or rather, the general’s daughter, Soon-deok, wearing her bear pelt. Baek-ah recognizes her immediately, and she just brushes past them with a surly look on her face, intent on getting to her target.

Eun is over the moon when Su shows him the party spread she’s prepared for him, and is more than happy to wear the silly birthday hat she’s made for him. Su thanks him for being the first friend she made in Goryeo, and tells him she has an even more special gift: She sings “Happy Birthday” for him, while adding some flourishes of her own. Wait, is that… the robot? Is she doing the robot?

So sees the display and laughs, much to Princess Yeonhwa’s ire. The other princes soon come upon them, with Crown Prince Mu revealing that he was in on the plot to let Court Lady Oh let Su take the day. It’s hilarious how all the princes get after ninth prince Won for comparing Su to a gisaeng, even though he meant it in the good way. (Gisaeng were known for their singing and dancing, which wasn’t a very common practice for noble ladies.)

But the boys all want her to sing for them too, even though Eun would rather keep her all to himself. Su obliges, and they all fall silent as she launches into a simple, yet thoroughly modern song. So and Wook seem most entranced by her, but it seems safe to say that all the boys have now fallen under her spell.

So seems especially moved, and once he becomes aware of it, he awkwardly leaves. A morose-looking Soon-deok watches from beneath her bear suit—is she looking at Eun? I can’t tell.

Jealous over Su’s little display, Princess Yeonhwa tries to send her off when the boys aren’t looking. Su doesn’t take kindly to the princess reminding her of her place, but luckily, Crown Prince Mu intervenes. It was he who gave Su permission to throw the party, because Eun enjoys spending time with her. That was the present he thought to give to his little brother.

Princess Yeonhwa acts nice as she takes her leave, but not before shooting Su a terrible glare. The crown prince and Su get to share a friendly moment, with him thanking her for helping him, and Su promising to help him in the future if he ever needs it.

Eun gets his presents next, and while some are toys (which he loves), Jung gifts him a book, which he’s much less happy about. Wook and Su smile at each other as Eun opens his gifts, but then they all get a shock when Soon-deok, still dressed as a bear, lays a paw on Eun’s shoulder.

It takes a moment for Eun to recognize her as Grand General Park’s daughter, and she stutters that the pelt is for him as she hands it over. She stutters enough for it to seem like a problem, and Eun breaks her poor heart by not liking her gift. (From the sound of it, she used to gift him bear pelts when they were younger, which he didn’t even like back then.)

So takes some time to himself, but he can’t stop from thinking about Su. Baek-ah tries to bring him back to the festivities, and resorts to pulling him back when So doesn’t want to go.

Inside, Yo seems to deliberately ask Eun what gift So gave him, only for Eun to reply that it was enough that So even came. Yo claims that there’s a special present only So could give before whispering something to Eun, only for him to reply that So wouldn’t give him something like that. I wonder what game Yo’s playing.

Eun runs over to Su to ask if she knows anything about the gift, and if she can help him get it. That’s when Baek-ah drags So back into the party, and he can’t help but smile a little when he catches Su smiling at him.

Yo puts So on the spot for not getting a gift, so So offers to get his younger brother anything he wants in return. Eun makes him promise, and once he does, Eun innocently asks: “Show me your face without the mask!” So that’s what Yo suggested. What a douche.

Crown Prince Mu admonishes Eun for asking for such a gift, and Eun ends up implicating Su in the plot, because he can’t seem to take a hint. So relents and carefully unties his mask in front of everyone.

Revealing his whole face, his scarred face, causes Princess Yeonhwa’s hand to go to her mouth in shock. So locks eyes with Su before he finally can’t take anymore and leaves. Yo laughs, and Yeonhwa demands that Eun apologize to his older brother. Crown Prince Mu admonishes the lot of them, but mostly Yo, for exploiting people’s weak spots far too often.

Yo scoffs at the crown prince’s words, and wonders aloud if he must’ve taken it personally when he said Mu’s in-laws were too lowly, and that he had a lot of nerve to remain as crown prince. Yikes.

Su chases after So, who ends up taking out his frustration on her. She tries to get him to stay so that he can hear Eun’s apology or else he’ll rip all the brothers apart, but So uses the hand she lays on his own to push her up against a column.

“Look at me. Look at me properly!” he commands, face to face with her now. “That look… that look in your eyes… I hate it so much that it makes me crazy.”

Su can only stare at him with that look, and he stares right back.

COMMENTS

Way to go, Eun. You’re young, but you’re not so young that you wouldn’t understand social cues, or the difference between right and wrong. It would’ve made more sense if he was still drunk, but he seemed to sober up rather quickly between the first round of festivities and the third—why’d he have to go and do that? And just when So was trying to be an accommodating older brother, too.

It feels like So gets kicked every time he’s even remotely happy, which is more of a reason for him to turn his back against the world than if he were to get kicked every time he was down. Every moment of happiness has to be earned, and it always comes at a cost, so it figures that So would be extra wary of opening up to others and becoming vulnerable. And though Yo might disagree, what So did in unmasking himself took more guts than it would’ve taken to just keep his mask on. He made a promise, and he had his pride to consider. Now, all bets are off.

This now seems like a minor issue when there’s such systemic editing problems going on, but I do wish the production had been a bit braver with So’s scar. Though the show established how unwanted any bodily flaws are among royalty, enough to justify why So would be ashamed of even light scarring on his face, it’s not enough to even distract from how pretty he is. I totally realize that’s hardly a valid complaint, but it would’ve been truly tragic if the scar was more than just a couple scratches, enough for So to feel like he had to hide that ugliness from the world. Right now, we have to kind of put ourselves in the time period to understand just how big of a deal that scar is—of course, it wouldn’t be pretty in any time period. Maybe it’s just that Lee Jun-ki sells it too well, so on this side of the screen I’m just left to think that the scar isn’t as distracting as it seems meant to be. Again, hardly a complaint, I know.

I like that this episode more or less established So’s crush on Su, and for once, warranted an actual flashback montage of their moments together. We needed to be reminded that they did have these meaningful moments, and it would make sense that So didn’t think much of them until his new feelings came to light. Now, he remembers every moment because it means something, which means trouble is bound to brew for the too-cute Wook and Su couple. (That calligraphy scene? Stick a fork in me, I was done.)

It’s a bit harder to reconcile the vulnerable So we’ve kinda sorta come to know with the cold-hearted, brutal prince that he can be, and nothing brought that more into focus than So’s conversation with Grand General Park. Though we barely got to see General Park, it became clear that his moral compass operates much differently than So’s—and that So, even when reminded of this, would choose to stand by his horrific actions without even a shred of remorse. It didn’t seem like false bravado as much as So being fully convinced that what he did was just and good, which is actually more frightening than if he was just putting up a front. Don’t let the dark side have you, So!

On the other hand, it was refreshing to see Su having more interaction with the princes, which helped to justify their attentiveness toward her. While it’s still strange to think of the levelheaded crown prince temporarily losing his mind, it served to help him see that Su only ever means well, effectively netting her another strong ally. Plus, that birthday party was adorable, and even more so because the crown prince sanctioned it. Regardless, Eun’s going to have to work to make up for what he just pulled, birthday or no. Good luck.

This episode was WAY WAY WAYYYYYY better than episode 6. Last episode felt like a totally different kind of drama, where everything was happening so damn fast . because whenever i blinked, another different scene would pop up and it feels so disconnected.

This episode had some nice moments between Hae Soo and Wang So, which i really and totally like, since i am SoxSoo shipper. ( Why does their names have to be So and Soo, because accidentally i could write Soo when i want to write about So in real. Script writer, may i have a word with you)

I loved some of their interactions.
1. Soo telling So that that there is no one who would protect her, but herself. That was so deep, and this sentence would definitely be relate-able to So, but in a heartbreaking way.

2. So trying to name the plants, like BEST plant, Fartie Plant. I was laughing so hard, when he was trying to make her feel a bit motivated and cheering her up. I wish that they showed Soo also naming some of the pants with modern language that So doesnt know.

3. Soo telling So, that she is not alone, because he is there beside her, was one of the highlights in today's episode. This actually would be true in near future, when their romance would blossom.

4. So telling Soo that her eyes drives him crazy. He dont want to show his scars and his ugliness to her, to not to anyone. yet without any reluctance she looks at him, not with fear, but with kindness, and warmth, which makes him crazy. She acknowledges him as a person, while his own people, try to demean him and any manner, relating him to an animal. That boy needs some pampering from his loved ones. Poor soul had been shattered and battered with physical and even emotional wounds. And that is why Soo definitely fits as his better half.

So is wise than any other prince, despite being away from palace and living almost all his life fighting with wolves without learning from books. He sure portrays himself as a smart cookie. He knows what to do things, when to do things, what to say in the moment. He is just perfect for the King's throne.

So is definitely smart and knows how to take care of himself and other issues as well. He seems like a person who goes all in to reach a goal, which can be good or bad depending on the situation.

Another week's wait is too long!! I'm so curious about the actual war between the princes, I wonder if it'll be like the Starks in GoT, everyone splitting up and fighting from distant places. Or breaking into factions with their own supporters and detractors. I'd love it if the drama went all in in that regard with double crossing, and triple crossing, and family pitted against family and occasionally choosing pragmatics. I'm really curious as to what role Ji Mong plays as well, he's the completely uncertain factor re: the original, I think.

I don't know if I want this drama to be that serious. I also hope none of the princes die, except for the Crown Prince which is inevitable to start the battle.

Hi, I'm just loving this drama. I haven't been addicted to a K drama since Boys Over Flowers and that was seven years ago. I feel old. lol

Anyway, I wanted to wait until the drama was over so I could just do a marathon on a weekend, but I caved in and know I have to wait patiently every Monday and Tuesday for new episodes. (Thanks a lot Tumblr!)

So, I watched the c version a couple of weeks ago so I could have a idea on what the show was going to be about and I liked it but the k version is more interesting.

I think IU is doing a great job and I don't understand the hate that is going around her. I believe people are jealous because she is acting with several cute guys. lol

Unlike the c version, I do not have a problem with her romance with the 8th prince. For me, in the c version he looked so sleazy, and I was ready to hate him in the k version but to my surprise I don't. I guess because he's not after the throne but that could all change in the upcoming weeks.

Yes, I am on board the WS/HS train and I just love them. Especially ep 7 when he gave her the flick on the forehead, I was squealing and dying at the same time. I'm so glad they decided to put that in! They are so comfortable around each other especially him. He teases her, gives her advice and tries to make her feel better. Then, he started to laugh when he saw her doing the robot dance and when he heard her singing and it suddenly hit him that he was falling in love with her. All those feels. The ending was very heartbreaking but next week we get to see her removing his mask!

Sorry for the long rant!

That acting when he realized he's fallen for her... Even without any line or voiceover. That was the moment it hit me how great LJK's acting is.
So what should I watch while waiting for monday? Arang or Iljimae?

You can also see his nose react shown how emotional he is when he removed the mask. Such a great acting.

Yeah I agree with you about the hate IU is getting. It's not fair when her performance is so awesome! Through her portrayal, I could genuinely feel how Hae Soo felt in each of her scenes. She made me cry and laugh so hard!! I guess haters will be haters for no reason except pure jealousy..

I read that the hate is due to her recent song. Apprently, the lyrics sexualize a young boy.

As cute as Wook/Soo is being made out to be, I officially jumped ship after the scene when Wook admitted that he loved Lady Hae all along. It says a lot about his character when he was all pining for Haesoo in front of Lady Hae as she's dying and then tells Haesoo that he loved her all along after she dies.
To top it off, he will make it up to Lady Hae by loving Haesoo in a way he never did for her??? If that isn't an all around heart breaker, i don't know what Wook is.

So/Soo I am officially onboard!

I felt quite skeeved out by him in those scenes you mentioned to be honest =/

I totally get a married man having eyes for another woman, especially one so closely related to his wife; in those times. So that didn't bother me as much as it did other viewers.

But i got really grossed out when he told her he loved her all along, but then goes and says he actually did love his wife but then says he will give Su all the affection he never his wife. I mean, what the hell? And I kinda feel quite ugh about her looking at him all starry-eyed.

He just doesn't strike me like the nice guy he appears to be. I just want less of their relationship and more of her and So.

Ahh, Jisoo (get well soon, maknae wangjanim) was so very cute in that scene which they didn't air in the version I saw, where he visits Su while Eun is with her. I'm very tired of this multiple versions thing and getting completely different stories. Please do better production team, what is this?

(Also, weird observation, but did anyone else get the feeling that they toned down IU's singing voice or told her to sing differently or something, because she was good, but she's actually amazing live. I recently heard her Sometimes I Want To Hug You Like Crazy live cover and it's excellent. Maybe because there's no real reason why Hae Soo should have IU's vocal chords.)

I think they toned it down, you're right. First and only time I ever saw IU act was in Dream High and even though I'm not interested in idols or actors, her voice was so amazing - even amongst a bunch of good voices - I googled her. World class voice, I could listen to her over and over again. She's not supposed to be a singer in the movie so I can see them asking her to make it sweet and simple, tone down those vocals, so the message as her character comes across instead of nonplussing and distracting everyone with her phenomenal pipes. Don't know if I agree - I'd have loved to hear her really sing in that scene.

I think so too! It's kind of difficult to gauge what exactly is different, but as far as I can figure out, she's singing in her 'normal voice' i.e. she's singing in her talking voice which is different from and lower than her usual singing voice, and she's not really trying to modulate. That reminds me of their live V-app, where Junki asked Baekhyun why he didn't take his shirt off in the drama, considering he'd gotten fit and famously taken it off recently in an EXO concert or something, and Baekhyun said it wouldn't make sense for the 10th prince to be that ripped. It's amazing that this production takes care of tiny details like that...and then go and mess up on the big things, heh.

I didn't know IU was a singer when I watched Dream High, so I was totally amazed when she sang. That duet with Kim Soo Hyun captivated me for so long (and made me crack!ship them-- that Producers loveline was such a blessing. Also, Cindy! I miss her so much, actual queen.) And I agree, I would have liked for them to allow her to sing in full force, or at least have her live fade into a recorded version, if they didn't want a full-blown live. She's really, ridiculously good. I tried looking for more music after today's episode, and I'm listening to My Old Story right now and even the music video is well-acted and emotionally on-point.

I can't believe this production cast one of the most acclaimed singers in Korea as a female lead and then not only leaves her off the OST, they cut her off while she's singing.

I mean, WHAT?!

ALSO, DID THEY RANDOMLY CUT OFF A HAE SOO VOICEOVER WHILE SHE'S SINGING? I thought at the time my subs were going too fast or something since they were showing up while there was no dialogue, but I just rewatched the birthday party scene and there's clearly supposed to be a voiceover telling them to always get along like this, and remember this moment even if they don't become king. What---?

But this is absolutely unbelievable, I just don't get how the editing can be so amateur when their budget is so high, what on earth did they spend it on! Editing choices (as bizarre and random as they might be) I can still justify to myself as some person's vision, but this is an actual mistake, I can't remember the last production I saw which did something like this. Ah, well, I too am getting used to these things, lol. It's amazing how addicted I am to everything about the drama, still. ^^

It just goes to show - film and video isn't shot, it's pieced together, as the saying goes. Everyone in crew knows the editing is by far the most important part of a production. You could have the best director and actors in the world all for naught. I suspect an amateur on this one. Even the continuity is waaay off. These are mistakes a complete newbie might make. For such an expensive production, it's beyond belief they didn't hire an experienced expert. If they did hire one, then that person might have been having a nervous breakdown or something, or been really really pressured to get this out quickly. But something is very wrong here.

what we said that the editing is like a veterinary horse (the origin is a figure in vet's schoolbooks illustrating a horse with symptoms of all the illnesses a horse can have.it's used in general now for everything that's full of problems.)
it's looking like a bad attempt to make a korean got: a weird mixture of western and korean style storytelling, characterisation etc.
(it's partially an nbc produced drama, so we see the clash of producers/editors)

Enjoying the recurring themes of this drama:

courtly civility vs savagery
While So is considered the 'animal' because he wasn't instructed by royal tutors and on royal etiquette, several of the royals (Yeon Hwa's whipping of Su & Chae-Ryung) act much more savage in their politiking than So. Yet, even with So's development as a royal, his ruthlessness is never out of mind for long (e.g. how he dealt with his tree, Pat Pat in Shinju, and Grand General Park's remark on the monks).

freedom/slavery
I like how this drama shows that even the king doesn't have complete freedom to do as he pleases since he too much keep up appearances and decorum even if plotting is necessary. Each position: king, queen, prince, princess, servant has their own version of 'slavery'.

love versus power
I feel this is where Su really shines and provides that foil to the royals. Her care and concern for people, just because they are people, must be so refreshing to everyone else who judges themselves and the worth of others by their connections, looks, abilities, and position. If anything, I think this is the fish-out-of-water part of her that causes the most friction, but is also her saving grace.

belonging versus loneliness
While the palace is the pinnacle of power, it's interesting how So says it is a lonely place, where trust is deadly, and therefore no one trusts one another. There's always an "inner" circle that people want to penetrate in terms of power and influence, but even as each inner circle becomes smaller, it doesn't make anyone less lonely.

It makes me so sad that So wants very badly to belong and to be accepted, but even without his scar, that will never happen since familial relations are different when vying for a throne is involved. It's going to be interesting to see how Su challenges this paradigm.

What a great analysis! I love how you delineated the themes which seem to recur throughout. I especially like how even the side-characters fit within this paradigm, like Yeon Hwa today made a clear choice between love and power in telling Wook that, even if she liked So, she would only support her brother's claim to the throne and give up everything else. And the boundaries of these dichomoties also often merge into each other because a lot of people in the drama give up love for power because they view power as a means to freedom, but powerful positions- as the king's reaction to his marriage showcased- are just as enslaving.

Wang So needs a rape whistle to blow for every time he interacts with Yeonhwa. It is weird but nothing in the entire drama is more squick inducing than her interest in So and that's with Wang Yo and his blatant eyeing her up and the King about to boink Hae-Su's (supposedly) non legal ass.

Their skin is just extremely flawless in the first place and to get that 'glow' I believe the in thing in Korea are cushion foundations expertly matched to your face skin tone that give you that nice, fresh 'dewy' look.

It's allll aboit letting the skins natural beauty come through with just a tiny bit of help although as you can imagine since the actor's complexions are almost perfect anyway I doubt they need much help.

I think shes only settling for wook. She though that to herself after he gave her the bracelet. She thought as long as shes with 8th prince it would be okay not to go back to her world/not be Ha Jin.

But theres more universal fate regarding her and 4th prince. She hasnt fallen for him yet but when she does it will be because she is truly in love. Wook cant protect her like our wolf prince does. And after all SooSo is OTP. This story is tragedy... shows how you cant force love. hence the rising n falling of the second lead ship is necessary to the story.

Hello beannies!
I hope you answer my questions...

First. Is Rouxi in the original also illiterate when she time traveled? Because Hae Soo faces that big of a problem for she can only understand the modern korean alphabet. I wonder if it was also featured in the original.

And another is have you heard about the special episode. It says in wikipedia that ep 7 part 2 special will be shown september 14.

im really looking for that Special ep

Yes, Ruoxi in the original was also partially "illiterate" when she time traveled, because she had trouble reading the traditional Chinese characters which are quite different from the modern simplified Chinese characters. There was a scene where she volunteered to read to her sister a letter from home, but couldn't make out quite a lot of the characters. The extremely cursive handwriting made it even harder.

**C-version Spoiler**

@Livi See, I remember this too. I thought it was interesting that Ruolan (Ruoxi's sister) was waiting for a eunuch to come and read the letter from their family. (Did Rualan not know how to read? Eh, this is neither here nor there). Ruoxi offers to read the letter only to realize she couldn't. There were parts of the letter she couldn't read. She states to herself later, that in the modern world she's and educated person but here she's half illiterate.

Then you see her reading a book of song poems, 8th & 10th prince come upon her. 10th prince asks if she knows all the letters in the book and she states that she remembers them but they don't remember her, so they are getting to know each other again. 8th prince asks how and she says by guessing.

As the years pass, we are shown Ruoxi has learned because there are many scenes where she is either writing missives or receiving them.

Yeah now I remember, throughout the times Ruoxi learned how to write and read properly.

Also Ruoxi started to copy 4th prince's handwriting to the point it's identical to 4th's calligraphy/handwriting because she loved him. I wonder if they'll show this in the K version? I hope they do!

OMG you're so right, she did have a calligraphy session with the 8th, wth!??!

Okok look on the bright side, Soo seems not interested in calligraphy writing yet. I'm hoping when she falls in love with the 4th she starts to practice calligraphy and copying his handwriting????

0

@cherryarrow

I hope you're right.

(C-Version Spoiler) All the times, she would practice her calligraphy all the while thinking about the 4th prince was like... foreplay?. It was a sensual thing. In any case, calligraphy was a link between 4th and Ruoxi.

@Dodgers

Every time there's a scene from the original that's also in the K version, I fangirl so hard. I hope So flicks Su's forehead more often haha.

But heck, the modern soundtracks are quite jarring. Why have beautiful period costumes and backdrop. Then drop in all that rapping and synthesized music? Is there something wrong with the editing team? The camera close ups are still horrendous.

I might have to stay away for a month just to do another marathon. The dire warnings of the upcoming battles have made me quesy. The BBJX version made me cry till I felt ill. And currently the sweet sweet Wook is killing me with his consideration and intelligence. I cannot bear the ending if it's like the other drama.

I also thought that this was LJK syndrome, but then I'd never been LJK fans before this drama. Don't get me bad, but I love seeing him as So more than as the real LJK. So's character is very interesting, very complex and multifaceted (thanks God we got LJK) that every word, expression and action is worth analyzing. I love reading comments on this site because they are thoughtful and some provide really good analyzing that I've never thought abt. I like the symbolism and tiny details that some have pointed, this drama has a lot more depth than the typical, more popular Korean dramas. The more I read comments here, the more addicted it seems and it's not healthy anymore. So's words to Soo at the last scene keep bugging me (omg IU why u're so hard to read) and every possible theory offered just doesn't fit well. This is my first LJK drama and have nothing to compare his acting in SH with another drama. I guess you are right, it has something to do with Wang So's character. The way he was fleshed out, his backstory, his vulnerability makes you want to pour your love for him more. I just want to hug him in the last scene and tell him that he's beautiful and would gladly accept him. Me and my delusional fantasies... But seriously, I have never really been compelled to get invested in a Kdrama character like this. I want to see all the remaining episodes in one go and see how the story unfolds and how it will end for Wang So. But alas, I need to watch 2 episodes at a time and bear this burning angst. And kudos to LJK. I cannot imagine any other playing Wang So and giving us such brilliant performance.

Hello all

Thanks for the recap. First time ever i'm so in love to a kdrama until made me read and write in DB forum.

Just know from this forum there also different edit of SH in internet, can some one give me the link with eng subtitle? I try to watch it in dramafever but it can not open in my country.

I realy like this episode. The lake schene where So give Soo pesimistic tour, amazing cinematographic .The drone angle, back sound, voice over So and Soo beatifully wrap.
I think Eun birthday schene too taking this episide time. I got what director want to delivered, but still too much.
And ofcourse the last schene. Prince Wang So i also hate the look in your eyes, becouse made me want to see you again and again.

Btw about the incest relationship. Im some kind of history bug. Hundred years ago many royal family not only in goryeo but also in other ancient country doing incest marital due many reason. From to kept the pure royal blood until to avoid throne problem. Also royals they dont hang out with commons.

I absolutely loved the lake scene and the music that they played over it. It's my fav OST track so far.

I have no idea why they spent literally 15 mins of drama on Eun's birthday (and on Eun). I don't know why he is getting so much of screen time amongst the minor princes. If anything, I rather see more of Baek-ah and Jung as their relationships with So and Soo are more important.

I'm also personally really cool with the incest stuff. It was everywhere in history, particularly with the royal families to maintain their bloodlines etc. Even European royals tended to marry half-cousins, and whatever relatives they could. So I'm actually pretty puzzled as to why some people have such a strong reaction to this bit of the plot.

I wish I have friends who are into Korean dramas so we can bond over and rave about them. Unfortunately, I don't. My close friends have outgrown watching K dramas after med school and I can't seem to influence my sisters (I have 2) into watching them. I'm in my late 30's so I don't know, my friends just have other interests I guess. But I'm thankful for Dramabeans and all the people leaving comments and giving their insights on K dramas. I found a community who shares my love for K dramas.

Reading comments here surely help me get through this painful waiting so please keep commenting.

I am thoroughly enjoying both Moonlovers and Moonlight. I found it interesting that both moon-dramas had a puppet show and the male lead flicking the female lead's forehead. Just something I randomly noticed. I can't remember many sagueks that had puppet shows from the top of my head. So to see it in both the moon-dramas was interesting. As if maybe the writers had spies in each other's camps, lol.

Moonlovers has made me a fan of Kang Ha Neul. I've always been a fan of Lee Jun Ki since his My Girl days and seen probably 80% of this dramas/movies. KHN, however, was never on my radar until Moonlovers. I remember him in Heirs, but he didn't really leave much of an impression on me, except that I thought he was pretty good looking. Looking at his past dramas, it seems he was in To The Beautiful You which I've seen, but can't recall him in it. He cameo'd in Two Weeks, which I have no recollection of either. I remember seeing him in the first couple of episodes of Misaeng. I haven't finished that drama yet, not because I don't like it, but because I came to know of it after all the buzz was over and I have a load of current things to watch that I haven't had time to finish it, but I will eventually. He is also in Missing Noir M which is on my list to watch. So I know who KHN is but never showed much interest in him. Have even seen him in Running Man a few times, but just thought of him as another celebrity. Then BAM, those first couple of episodes of Moonlovers with all those close up shots of his face/eyes/acting, HOLY MOLY! Cupid shot an arrow at my heart! I started youtubing some stuff about him. Rewatched all the RM episodes he was in, this time concentrating on him and have even started watching Youth Over Flowers in Iceland just for him. When I have time, I will also backtrack and watch his older dramas. I'm even watching Angel Eyes just for him (won't continue with it once his part is done though, lol).

I'm currently on the Wook/Su ship only because that's what is shown mostly, but I know that ship will sink. Before it sinks, I will hop onto the So/Su ship and sail away to safety. It's a good thing I'm a fan of Lee Jun Ki, lol.

Whoops. Didn't mean to type up an essay. I've been a long time reader of DB but this is only my third post >.<

Wow, I didn't watch moonlight, but it's funny to know that both drama have similarities. I only notice was the dancing part in moonlight, which way similar for C-version. I don't know if the dance of Haesoo in Bday party can be considered but the moment So look at her and reminisce the time that they were together. I can say it actually depicts that moment in C-version.

In the C-drama Rouxi organizes/choreographs a song & dance routine that another girl dances to. But when the 4th prince watches her he imagines Rouxi doing the dancing and the singing. That for me, was a scene where the 4th prince realizes the depth of his desire for Rouxi.

In this birthday, again Su is singing & dancing. He then realizes he desires her.

Moon Lovers and Moonlight do have a lot of fun similarities, haha. I remember that week when they both had pivotal moments where the male lead calls the female lead his "person." Wook tells So that nothing at his place belongs to So and they're all "his people" and then So tells Su that since she didn't like him saying she belonged to him, maybe he should call her "my person" instead. And that same week Lee Yeong refused to let Ra On go with Yoon Sung on their pre-planned outing, and told Yoon Sung that she was "my person."

And they both had arcs where the female lead was being forced into a sexual relationship of sorts/basically sold- Ra On with that Chinese envoy and Su with Taejo- and all the lead males (all 3 in Moonlight and 5 in Scarlet Heart) banded together trying to save them and created a lot of ruckus in the palace and amongst the people. And both female leads mostly only succumbed in the end because they were told that the boys would be punished for trying to help them. Although they ultimately had different conclusions (the Moonlight boys managed to save Ra On, but the Scarlet Heart boys couldn't save Su, and she ultimately saved herself.)

So I totally wouldn't be surprised at as if maybe the writers had spies in each other’s camps, lol. ;)

@Anh: Oh yes, you're right, I'd forgotten the bracelets while writing the comment, but I totally registered that while watching the episodes this week! I usually watch Moon Lovers the moment it's subbed and Moonlight the next day, so when I saw the bracelet scene in Moonlight, I remembered the one in Moon Lovers (both signifying pretty much the same thing, as re: an eternal bond), and thought of how it was yet another strange similarity in the same week for both shows, lol. And the bracelets are clearly symbols and foreshadowing for both of them and will come into play later.

And I don't think I will rewatch that drama just for KHN, so maybe I'll look for a TTBY KHN-cut only on youtube.

Hello friends!! I have a question to people from Korea-why this awesome drama has such low ratings?!! I can't figure out it at all. Yes there is some problem with editing but still the 15% rating this drama deserves I'm sure! It is like I'm too concern about the ratings-for me Moon lovers are perfect and already in my top 5 dramas must to see. But I feel so sorry for Junki and other actors of the show! Their performance is so captivating! And Junki -he is an Actor his acting is so amazing and breathtaking! Sorry for being to emotional but I just can't get it- why Korean people just ignor this drama?!!!

Because it's personal preferences, word-of-mouth and the editing, song choices etc indeed suckz.
As you can see, to you, it's perfect, but to many others, it has too many flaws for a pre-produced drama. Also, if it fails to capture audience's attention from first few episodes, you can't really blame the views for not continuing.
And I don't know if koreans have thing against foreign country sources or not, because ML is a remake of Chinese novel and drama that is already well established popularity. Maybe korean like to watch something that more korean originality.
and many can say, rating does not determine how good a drama is, but perhaps it indicates what the audience like at time being, like korean probably like light-hearted, rom-com drama at the moment (e.g. DOTS, doctors and moonlight) over something too complicated, dark that has not been presented too well to draw in attention.

Park Bo Gum is the current it boy in Korea. Kind of like Kim Soo Hyun in 2012 (Moon embracing the sun had really high ratings, despite a wooden actress, lack of chemistry between the leads, poor editing, etc.) He deserves the popularity, Koreans tend to like hot upcoming trendy actors.

i agree that Park Bo Gum popularity is rising in Korea, but his popularity alone cannot carry the whole drama rating, people tune in for moonlight more, because of the overall balance of the drama that is collective efforts from the production team and the actors, actresses.

There is a theory that one of the culprits is because the time slot Scarlet Heart (SH) aired is the same as Moonlight. We know Moonlight has started one episode earlier and it did a good job in captivating the viewers (rating is good from the start). So it's understandable that viewers tend to watch Moonlight on TV, then maybe go online to watch SH. The problem is this rating system only counts the percentage of people who watch that drama in that time slot on TV. Maybe many Korean watch SH too but online, so the rating is still low.
You know, SH is recently crowned the first place for Content Power Index (CPI), beating up Moonlight. It means that it is the most influential television show for the first week of Sept. CPI counts Internet news subscription rankings, direct search rankings i.e. interests & engagements, and social media buzz rankings i.e. SNS. That's why eventhough rating is just hearbreaking, I still have hope that it will eventually do well, domestically and internationally.

It's not strange when the pre-produced drama is probably going through editing again. So from now on, there will be at least 2 version for 1 episode, one version is the completed product that been sold to China, and the other one is episodes that been re-edit for airing in Korea.
So best advise is to watch both if you can to get a fully understanding, or watch the subbed ver on dramafever (that is China ver) and read re-cap (Korea ver) to get the best of both world.

Regarding Eun's birthday present from hell, I took Hae-Su's unwavering wide-eyed gaze to be her standing as a non-judgemental witness.

Whereas most of the others watched as So took off the mask and then broke eye contact after varying lengths of time (not counting Mu, who was present when So was maimed by Mom)... Hae-Su calmly looked him in the eye while registering only composure. She did not gasp, shudder, wince, close her eyes, or instantly look away.

I don't recall which of them broke eye contact first... but I'd be willing to bet it was So who blinked.

I see Hae-Su as acknowledging So's existence as a fellow human being experiencing intense distress by being seen bare-faced by his closest kin... after being conned into it.

As for So's reaction to Hae-Su's gaze, this reminds me of an experience many years ago when I had my colors analyzed, which at the time was a nifty new outgrowth of the "Dress for Success" movement. It was based on a book called "Color Me Beautiful," the premise being that dressing in colors that match or complement one's own natural warm or cool skin tones and hair and eye colors brings out a person's natural vibrancy. Conversely, wearing the wrong colors washes out the complexion and makes a person look dull and drab, no matter whether those colors are the latest fashion trend.

As part of the process, I got a makeover with the appropriate color palate. My face gradually emerged in the mirror in a way that shocked the heck out of me. I couldn't believe how good I looked, and at the same time felt exposed and very uncomfortable. I wanted to hide. (Yeah -- introvert bookworm here.) At the same time, I acutely realized that I'd been invisible my whole life up to that point, and that was sad -- even though I preferred to keep a low profile. *cue growing pains*

I can understand where So was coming from in this and the following scene. He'd been asked to reveal himself out of idle curiosity rather than deep caring and concern. After so many years of being shunned, the inauthentic attention was even more painful. But one pair of eyes was watching steadfastly and with utmost attention...

What a beautiful way to word it. It makes so much sense too. Someone like Baek Ah may have looked away, not out of fear or disgust, but because it was a violation and he knew it and he didn't want to be party to it (I thought it was a gorgeous detail that he turned away even before So took off his mask). But he still looked away, and for someone like So who was and is shamed and wounded because of the scar, just that inability to look at him would hurt, even when it was out of respect or concern. Thus Su still looking straight at him is such an important moment for them, even though she herself probably wouldn't have registered at the time how much it actually means to him.

@Zoe, @Lilium,

Thank you. ;-)

Someone like Baek Ah may have looked away, not out of fear or disgust, but because it was a violation and he knew it and he didn’t want to be party to it (I thought it was a gorgeous detail that he turned away even before So took off his mask). But he still looked away, and for someone like So who was and is shamed and wounded because of the scar, just that inability to look at him would hurt, even when it was out of respect or concern.

I was very touched when Baek-Ah averted his gaze, and agree as to his reason for doing so. For him, it was the most respectful thing he could do... in addition to having searched for So and fetched him with a very brotherly wrist-grab.

It occurs to me that Mu and Baek-Ah are the native Goryeons most empathetic to So, and they act in a manner apropos for their time. I've thought about how Baek-Ah could have possibly expressed emotional support for So without embarrassing him, and that would have been to stand close behind him with his hand on his shoulder... in effect saying, "I have your back." I know he does.

Hae-Su, as a 21st-century woman, treats So as a fellow human being... and that includes acknowledging his existence by looking him in the eye. That is not only possible for her, but second nature, coming as she does from a time when the equality of human beings and their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness has spread to many parts of the world.

I went back and rewatched the scenes aired by SBS. So did indeed break off eye contact with Hae-Su first, right before leaving. She went after him, followed by Wook, who is not in the following scene yet -- but I expect will be in the continuation in episode 8.

Eye contact can be a tricky thing in humans. In some cultures, it means one person is giving another their undivided attention, which is meant to be a good thing. In others, it is seen as a challenge, and something to be avoided. From what I've read, gorillas regard it the same way... so maybe it's a primate thing that goes way back.

I'm probably in the minority here, but it makes sense that Su wouldn't turn away from So upon his unmasking because she already know what he looks like.

While I'm in agreement with @Zoe that the blank look on Su's face at the end of the episode was a directing decision in order to be enigmatic, subject to So's interpretation, I would say that when he did unmask what I saw in her face was not necessarily sympathy, pity, but compassion.

I saw So's pain reflected in Su's eyes. To see one's own pain reflected in someone else's eyes can be really hurtful because it's an external view of one's internal turmoil.

But, I also agree that So's changed feelings for Su makes him more sensitive to how she views him, and I also agree (who said it?) that there's such vulnerability on So's part at the moment, he must feel naked in front of everyone's reactions.

One thing that's been niggling at me since the opening week is that the rhythm has felt off because the first three episodes were aired in one shot. I'd noticed in another show (MIRROR OF THE WITCH?) that the action unfolded in a kind of one-two punch each week... with a cliffhanger/major plot point resolved by the end of the week, and possibly the set-up for the next development introduced. Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong... but the balance, for me, is kind of off.

It's a burr under my saddle, but by no means is it a deal breaker... It's just more stressful to hang by my thumbs until Monday rolls around.

its about time the 10th prince get out of the storyline already and make way for better princes or at least increase LJK's screen time.

tbh, i found the birthday party for 10th pretty redundant because, it did not appear to me that hae-soo and eun was THAT close. and hae-soo have always been pretty nonchalant about eun....

it seemed like the writer just put in the scene because it existed in the C-BBJX. -__-

the 10th prince in C-BBJX was childish but not dumb enough to ask such tackless stuffs. -_-

mehhhhh, i rather they added more interactions between hae-sooxbaekah (AND WANGSO TOO). im interested in how their friendship will grow. and also baek-ah's relationship with whoopee (seohyun).

LJK slays in every single ep. look at those eyes after he took off the mask. all i wanted to do was to hug him ;_;. MEANWHILE HE WAS STILL FLAWLESS AND AMAZING EVEN WITH THAT "SCAR"

I disagree about the 10th prince. In the Chinese version**Spoiler** the 10th prince was childish BUT he was also a bumbling idiot. Remember, during his birthday party, the Crown Prince comes late and says he did so because he got the 10th prince a special gift. Which turns out to be a Jade piece the King received from Burma. The ramifications were that the CP was trying to show off and pretty much took/ stole this piece to give to 10th. All the other princes understood the ramifications. Basically, they will get in trouble because the CP took a tributary jade piece without the King's permission. The 13th prince said that the 10th prince wouldn't accept such a grand present... then the idiot insisted that he wanted the gift. In his words, "How could I decline a gift from the CP?" Finally, the 4th prince stepped in and said the CP was just joking around and showing them the gift... and it finally dawned on the CP too. So he said that was it and he would get 10th a horse instead.

My point is, in the C-BBJX, the 10th prince was that stupid and tactless to insist on his gift. What made the situation so egregious in SH was the fact that the 10th prince's insistence directly affect Wang So. Which of course, made me as a viewer want to kick 10th's a$$...

soo have never looked away when ever she looked at so's face. she didnt pitty his scar, or scared, or whatever. compared to the rest of his family reactions when so open his mask, 13th closes his eyes, yeon hwa was shocked, 3rd laugh at him, etc.

so just dont know how to react to soo's innocent stare, i think that's why he said he hates it.

as in soo and wook, it's only normal for soo to fall for wook here. trhwon into a different world, wook was kind, not too mentioned good looking etc, her protector naturaly she fall for him. while the other meaning so, threatens to kill her several times already, toss her from a horse, announce to everybody she belongs to him like she's a thing.

looking forward to the love triangle development.

It's kind of interesting how involved the women in this drama are in the game of thrones, despite being excluded from positions of hard power. In fact, till now, they're the only ones who've shown any real political ambition. Yo's thirst for the throne largely comes from his mother, and she's the one who either eggs him on or creates conditions for him to be able to appropriate power (and will definitely play a huge role in So's quest for the throne.) Yeon Hwa explicitly implied in this episode that she would give up love or attraction or whatever it is that she feels for So or anyone else to support Wook's claim to the throne and always outright states the political realities of what the throne means and why its important for their house and that Wook should be more prepared. Even Wook's mother seems to have been the one to encourage his marriage of political convenience to Lady Hae to get back into the graces of the palace. The hard political talk of ascension has as yet mostly been at the behest of the women or by the women.

On a different note, the more I think about it, the more Su's blank, undecipherable gaze in the last scene works for me (or maybe I'm just talking myself into liking everything about the drama hehe.) She's literally doing what So asked her to- just looking at him. Not, of course, with fear, revulsion or dislike, but also not with evasiveness, pity, sympathy, or curiosity. I'm not sure what people who've never seen IU act before think of her, but in all the projects that I've seen of hers previously, eye-emoting has always been one of IU's strongest points. Some of the scenes with the most impact in The Producers were when Cindy was wordless- the shoelace tying scene, the umbrella scene, the looking-through-the-window scene, the mike wiring scene, the 2N1D team waking her up scene- all of them memorable and all of them emoted without any dialogue. Which is why- unless she's gotten significantly worse since last year- I'd have to believe that a lot of these are directing choices. If we're not seeing any particular emotion, we're probably not supposed to see any particular emotion. So is either projecting the look that he feels she would have or hates this very look that he can't classify as easily as he can the others.

[Also, for anyone remotely interested in Queen Cindy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ1v3VNJDgQ%5D

I like your point a lot and it coincides with the history at the time - the women are not just Taejo's queens or concubines, they are powerful representatives of their various houses. The game of thrones would be very much in their purview. I don't think we should rule out Lady Oh in this either. Mu's mother, whether it's her or not, was of the Oh clan historically, and Lady Oh was likely of the same clan and seems to be close to Mu.

That gives us three factions that we know of all centered on a wife/concubine:
Lady Oh - Crown Prince Mu
Queen Sin - Yo, So, Jung
Queen Wook's mom - Wook (and Yeon Hwa)

It's going to be interesting watching their manipulations.

Re the look on Su's face, I agree (and said so up thread to rebut someone saying IU was not up to expressing an emotion - she's conveying all other emotions very well so why would this be different unless she is meant to have a more undecipherable look) that it was a directing choice. So's going to read what he's going to read into it.

I've just started a first re-watch of the series. Interesting that scenes that aggravated me at first aren't now. The bath scene didn't seem so cheesy though still awkward, Su and Wook's attraction doesn't make me as uneasy, the close-ups just seem a director's choice. While I still believe that Moonlight's head start was the main reason SH started fairly low at 8%, I do think its dip afterwards had more to do with 1) alienating the male audience with the bath scene - sageuks I'd think would usually have more male viewers than normal kdramas but that scene pretty much signalled that they were NOT the target audience;
2) alienating some of the female audience with unwarranted fan service that insulted intelligence in the bath scene - no one likes that much overt hormonal manipulation - it's the manipulation not the chests that are objectionable.
3) alienating many in the female audience with the potential adultery between Wook and Su - this was really off-putting for me, because Su had just been cheated on herself and Lady Hae loved her husband, not just because of a political marriage in the way. It was hard to keep respect for Su in those circumstances, and we do need to like our main character. Various qualifying circumstances come up to ease that unease as the series goes on but I know after episode 2 I was quite prepared to drop the series because I was having a hard time liking Su for this reason. I'm glad I kept going, of course, but I can see why others might have dropped it.

Editing problems start cropping up quite early, too, but I doubt that was enough to put people off. Anyway, on to a rewatch of episode 3!

Great analysis too Barbrey!
You are particularly right about the alienating effect of the bath scene in the first episode.
I did actually briefly dropped Moon Lovers right after I saw that blatant fan service bath scene.
(Lucky - for me - I gave Moon Lovers another chance hahaha because now I am hooked!)

I'm a newbeanie in the comment section but have been reading and follow for a long time now. I've been coming here for recaps and comments because it's a good read and people don't bash each other.

I felt the need to read everyone's comments on this drama because I am not very familiar with the history of Korea. This is my first sageuk and I am loving everything about it, from costume to political angst.

Welcome!! I am new poster too, but always lurked. To be honest, no other show had given me any inclination to post. (Though I love the thoughtful insights this place had given to other shows).

It is the power of Scarlet Heart: Ryeo that I am completely obsessed. I love this show so.

Welcome to you both! I rarely post much at all but for some reason this drama has gripped me. I'm rewatching right now, and even though I have a few reservations, I am in awe of how much enjoyment - tragic, humorous, tense - they pack into each episode. It really is a delight.

Me too! Long time lurker way back when Javabeans started blogging (lurking on and off) but now lurking much more regularly. I felt the need to post something too and it ended up just a tad longer than I thought.

I especially appreciate the information beanies share about Korean history.

I haven't gone back to rewatch Scarlet Heart as much as I want to, but I find Eun's lacking of social and emotional cues to be very convoluted. They needed a trigger for So to remove his mask in order for him to witness the difference in the way Hae-soo looks at him despite the scar on his face versus his the way his family does, and they chose to use his character in a very convoluted way.

Yes, Eun has been portrayed to be childish and not the most intelligent of the lot, but emotional cues isn't something he has been lacking. He picked up on Hae-soo's feelings after she overheard Lady Hae asking Wook to take a second wife, and he also realised that Hae-soo would be feeling devastated after her death and hence cheered her up with those puppets, which I thought was endearing.

And therefore, his insistence that So remove the mask in front of everyone for his birthday gift despite the objections his brothers raised seems to me like it's lazy writing. They needed something to happen in the most dramatic way possible and used a convoluted way to do it.

I thought it would have made more sense if they had done's Su song and dance part, then the part where his brothers get Eun drunk, and then Eun's lapse in judgement would have so much more tolerable and we would still get the unmask reveal.

Right? I would have been mad, but I could have understood. There was no reason for him to get drunk and then sober up in time for Hae-soo's celebration. Now it just seems like something that happened but wasn't necessary. (the whole scene where Eun's brothers got him drunk). It definitely makes more narrative sense to switch the scenes up a bit.

They had a similar scene in the original version where the 10th prince insisted on keeping the birthday present from the Chinese Crown Prince even though all the other princes, except for 9th prince, kept objecting & tried to convince him why he shouldn't.

I think Eun was a bit high with the all excitement, presents, drinking, singing & dancing, etc. & got too caught up in the moment, and was probably oblivious to the atmosphere. He did realise his blunder after So removed the mask.

i see the things different:
he don't pick up hae soo feelings after the scene between wook and lady hae: he only answered hae soo's question, from his viewpoint: he want a happy marriage lasting 1000 years - in the world of political marriages :) he don't want more wifes - more wifes are troublesome, and it's coming of his very very practical observation. hae soo called him innocent and he is innocent as a child. children can feel our emotions, but sometimes they can understand them and sometimes they completelly misjudged them. eun does not understand what's wrong, just react to it - he gives his toys etc.
his insistence remove the mask in front of everyone is important - he is the most innocent and harmless of all characters, but his act start the open confrontation between the brothers

I think Eun at that time noticed that Su is not her being usual "hyper"/ cheery self and is pre occupied (similar to Kids wanting to play or engage adults' attention but the adults seem to be not in the mood for it, and is simplified by kids as adults being Sad).

When they were talking about the marriage, he was only assuming that Su's questions are about Their (possible *at least he being hopeful from his end*) marriage.
Because to him, Su's "asking to see him every day/ you can come visit me every day" is Goryeo's version of getting to know each other/ courtship is leading to marriage. And then he just concluded from all of his assumptions that Su is "moving too fast".

So, he is really not the brightest in the bunch. He can read emotions of others, but its when his feelings are already clouding his judgment, he gets too excited, next thing.. Sadly it seems logic flies fast out of the window.

Yep, he is frustratingly too childish. Maybe, his mental age is 4. I dunno.

I agree! They could have set up the scar reveal scene better. Making Eun stupid for that sake seemed to be a lazy choice on the part of the writer(s) indeed. And it does not make sense. So even went as far as threating to kill Su in order to conceal his scar. I did not buy that he would just reveal his scar that easily just because his brother asks for it for fun.

Fun fact: Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the actress who played Hae Su (Rouxi) in the C-version of Scarlet Heart, Liu Shi Shi, and 4th Prince, Nicky Wu, tied the knot in real life!

I actually started watching BBJX a few years ago but can't remember why I dropped it quite early on and never picked it back up. Reading some comments on here, it sounds like BBJX had a sad ending, but the leads got married in real life 5 years later! =]

Interesting though, I watched Gong (The Palace / The Lock Heart Jade) which has the same plot as Scarlet Heart C-version; modern girl travels back in time and gets caught up in the princes' fight for the throne and has a love triangle with the 8th Prince and 4th Prince. But the romance is switched around here. She fell for 4th Prince first, and later fell in love with 8th Prince realising that he is her One True Love. I enjoyed Gong a lot more, finishing it. *shrugs* beats me why this one drew me in and not the other, lol.

Gong is the unofficial Cdrama adaptation of the novel BBJX.

It did not pay royalty or rights to the author of the novel (maybe the asking price is something they cannot afford or the project proposal/the drama they want to make is something not in line with how the author would want her story to look on TV???).

Forget the rights or "inspired by". They probably went straight ahead: just whipped up a script taking the skeleton of the novel, tweaked some stuff, they set up production, wrapped it up, and tried and was successful to have it on air before the time that the official adaptation, which is the C-BBJX drama, will be broadcasted. (Talk about stealing the thunder?)

Basically, it was a battle between the production company which eventually came out with Gong and the production company which was granted the right to make the C-BBJX, since the novel is so popular making it is a sought-after material for TV adaptation.

Both dramas were aired the same year, with the official C-BBJX broadcasted on the last third of the year.

This is what was said on the blogs about Gong and C-BBJX.

Thanks for the info! It's quite unfortunate I was unaware of all this when I had watched Gong back then. Otherwise I would have dropped Gong and tried picking up BBJX again to support the author of the novel.
