Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 7

Working in the palace may have its downfalls, but when it has perks, it has perks. Su gets to know the princes a little bit better, and the princes get to know her and her bubbly attitude even more than before. She makes an impression on everyone she meets, that’s for sure—but with the hearts of at least two men (and counting), these relatively uncomplicated days might soon seem like a faraway dream.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Su tries out her new court lady digs to face Court Lady Oh (who I’d mistaken as a concubine—in reality, she’s sanggung, the highest attainable rank for a court lady, charged with managing the palace), who asks Su about her knowledge of herbs.

She’s more than happy to tell her superior about how much she knows about both herbs and cosmetics, but when the court lady asks her whether she can read and write, Su shrinks considerably as she murmurs, “No.”

Outside, she finds So waiting, and is chipper as ever as she tells him about her new appointment and how great she’ll be at it—did he know she was good with makeup? She also acknowledges that the whole affair with the king must’ve been shocking for him, but wasn’t it great that she didn’t have to marry him?

Suddenly, So grabs her bandaged wrist. “You could have died,” he finally says. “If the cut were any deeper, you would have.” Su’s smile disappears as she somberly says that she didn’t die, but that’s not good enough for So, who tears into her about scarring herself and the ramifications of becoming a court lady, since she might never be able to leave the palace now. If that’s the case, he asks, why didn’t she just marry the king?

“I don’t know!” she answers in her defense. She tells him that she just couldn’t go through with it, and knew that only she could save herself. Tears well up in her eyes as she tells him this, but So just answers by calling her a fool. Then, his soft underbelly shows as he adds, “Don’t think about doing that again. I won’t ever forgive you.”

So gives her a pessimistic tour of one of the palace lakes, explaining the rigors of palace life and how everyone within its walls is alone. Relentlessly optimistic, Su says she’ll be fine since she’s not alone, and indicates the prince standing next to her as proof.

She’s confident that no matter what happens, she’ll be able to endure, and even So is inclined to believe it just based on her positive attitude. Though he doesn’t resist quipping that palace life certainly won’t be boring with her around now, he can’t help but smile once he’s turned away from her.

Princess Yeonhwa has a candlelight chat with her brother Wook, telling him that she’s looking into another match for him. Wook says one arranged marriage was enough, but Yeonhwa feels deeply about this issue—if he doesn’t marry advantageously, then they may as well let Queen Sinmyeongsunseong drive their family out of the palace.

It seems like she’s alluding to the queen’s dark past since Wook says he’s forgotten it, and he advises Yeonhwa to do the same. But she keeps going, insisting that since third prince Yo entered into a political marriage, he must have eyes on the throne. If the evil queen drives Crown Prince Mu out, then her and her brother’s future is obvious: “We die, or we get cast out.”

Wook switches topics slightly, and asks if Yeonhwa still likes So. She replies that she would like anyone who can help her, whether that be So or anyone else. “Whether it’s an arranged marriage or I’m sold off, I will not enter into a marriage that does not help you,” she adds, making it clear that her endgame is to see Wook crowned as king.

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Mu mulls over his own future as Astronomer Choi treats him for his illness. That same illness caused him to miss another morning assembly with the king, causing the crown prince to worry that he might be dethroned.

Astronomer Choi does his best to cheer the crown prince up, assuring him that he was born under the star of an emperor—he wouldn’t con the nation about something so huge, so all the crown prince needs to do is focus on his illness.

We’re introduced to Grand General PARK SOO-KYUNG (Sung Dong-il) and his daughter, PARK SOON-DEOK, who wears men’s armor and who seems, for all intents and purposes, to be a warrior. Her relationship with her father is adorable, as she refuses to give him the skin of a bear she presumably killed, claiming that it’s for someone else.

They’ve arrived at the palace, and Grand General Park goes straight to see King Taejo. From their discussion, it sounds as if fourth prince So was once in General Park’s care, and he’s the one who taught the prince martial arts. It’s clear that he thinks highly of So, enough to suggest that were it not for the scar on his face, he’d make a fine crown prince.

After the general and Astronomer Choi have a thoroughly ajusshi-like verbal sparring session, we find all the princes having a bit of fun. Split into teams of four, they each hoist their champion onto their shoulders (for Yo’s team, it’s fourteenth prince Jung, and for Crown Prince Mu’s, it’s tenth prince Eun) to do “battle” with the other team’s champion.

Yo eyes So on the other team specifically as he says that he won’t lose today, and both teams rush each other in an attempt to knock the other’s champion off balance. There’s laughs and smiles all around.

Next we see the princes at their studies, but before we have time to figure out what’s going on, we cut to So (in his team outfit from earlier, strange) and Grand General Park doing some catching up. Though So insists that he’s been occupying his brain during his time at the palace, the grand general cavalierly mentions all those men So killed before setting them on fire.

“They all deserved to die,” So states, but it’s clear that the general isn’t so convinced. Despite the fact that he taught So how to kill, he clarifies that he only did so in order for So to have the power to protect someone else, and he didn’t intend for him to use those powers for murder.

So still insists that what he did was just because it helped the royal family (and thus the nation), leading the general to ask what’s keeping him in the palace. He doesn’t get a straight answer out of So, and seems to know that all the answers So gives him aren’t all that truthful.

He knows that only one prince will remain in the palace, and that’s the prince who will sit on the throne. Again he asks what So’s real reason for staying in the palace is, but So gives him a silent look rather than an answer.

Court Lady Oh and Su go to check in on Queen Sinjeong, who’s been suffering from chronic headaches lately. Su is as bubbly as ever as she tells the queen that she’s happy in her new appointment, and offers to make her more soap if she liked the last batch.

But before she can step in to adjust the queen’s makeup, Court Lady Oh sends her out, since she’s still too new to attend to a queen. Once they’re alone, Queen Sinjeong admits her genuine concern for the court lady, who she knows suffers from chronic stomach pain. She wants to arrange for her to see the royal doctor, but Court Lady Oh politely demurs.

Su ends up drawn to the sounds of a man screaming, and it turns out to be Crown Prince Mu. Shirtless, his torso and arms are covered with angry red sores, and he screams that it feels like insects are crawling over his body. Su seems to recognize the symptoms of eczema, and rushes to stop the prince from applying cold water to his skin, which would only make it worse.

The crown prince angrily grabs her by her clothes for her interference, but is calmed somewhat when Su asks if his condition gets worse after eating certain foods, or after sweating. Now that he’s listening, Su advises him to only take baths in hot water, and looks through the available herbs to make a concoction she can apply topically to soothe his symptoms.

Court Lady Oh sees this and throws a fit, which includes throwing Su to the ground. She punishes Su by having her hold up heavy medical texts while kneeling, though she’s the slightest bit interested in how Su knew to use peppermint for itching. Su explains that she knows how to treat it because her mother suffered from the same illness, but Court Lady Oh warns her never to speak of the crown prince’s illness to anyone. She seems to be coming from a caring place, at least.

Su is sent to water the plants in the garden, unaware that she’s thrown water onto a napping Prince So. He hears her grumbling about how she doesn’t like her job, and when she mentions running away, he makes himself known: “Run away? Where do you think you can hide from the king of Goryeo?”

She blusters that she didn’t actually mean it, and So seems to know this. He hears her out as she complains that she has so much talent that’s just being overlooked here, and catches her slip about being right about how to treat the crown prince.

He warns her to be careful about what she says, since another slip might land her in a much worse place than Damiwon Palace. She gives him tips about how the crown prince can manage his illness, and he puts to bed her groundless worry that Court Lady Oh went too far with her—with the crown prince’s life on the line, Court Lady Oh actually let her off easy.

Then, with a smile, he adds that based on what he’s seen with her watering skills, she’s not so much overflowing with talent as she is lacking talent. He proceeds to give her some tips on naming plants in order to help them grow, and seems to be coming up with tree names on the fly to try and cheer her up.

So then tells her about a tree he named when he was in Shinju, though he also tells her of how he burned it down on a cold night to ward off wolves. But then he abruptly switches to a much lighter tone as he pokes Su in the head and tells her not to think about running—she should commit to the choice she’s made and work hard.

She does as he instructed and throws herself into her work, however exhausting. She’s still a bit clumsy, and Wook steals moments of her time before Court Lady Oh can notice. Awwwww. Just seeing him seems to re-energize Su.

Su makes some sort of poultice for tenth prince Eun’s fingers, though we don’t know why. He’s annoyed at having to leave it, until Su informs him that if that herb is left on until the first snow falls, then the wearer’s first love will come to them. He looks at Su and smiles, thinking that he’ll finally have some luck then.

Wook comes upon Su trying to practice reading and writing, and corrects her mistakes. This is the first he’s heard about her not being able to read, so when he asks her how she was able to read his poem, she tells him that Lady Hae read it for her. His face falls at that, as he says to himself that he owes his late wife.

He watches her continue to try writing and laughs, eventually covering her hand with his own so he can help her write properly. She’s too busy staring at his close proximity to notice what he’s doing with the paper, and he draws even closer to her as they start their next character: his name, Wook. “It means the rising sun,” he adds, and she smiles.

The smile leaves him when he notices the scar on her wrist, now old, and he ties a bracelet onto her wrist to cover it. The red thread is to protect her from misfortune, and the jade symbolizes a happy relationship. “Please promise me… that you will never take it off,” he says.

Su looks up at him and nods, breaking out into a small smile. Wook assures her that he’ll return her to where she belongs, and tells her to wait for him. Then, he leans forward and kisses her on the forehead, causing her to really smile. D’aww.

She studies the character that stands for his name that night, and thinks on the meaning behind it. She also studies her new bracelet, and mulls over how she’s happy to wait, because she likes Wook. “If I’m with him… I think I would be okay being Hae Su, and not Go Ha-jin.”

Baek-ah gets caught drawing pictures of the common people by a common girl, who calls him out for looking down on them and mocking their suffering. But she’s not so common after all, since she wears an expensive trinket, and the men attending her call her “Princess.” She must be in hiding.

It’s tenth prince Eun’s birthday, and the princes all gather for a ceremonial dinner and round of drinks. Wook spends his time not-so-subtly looking to spot Su from the crowd of attending court ladies, while Eun’s brothers (under Crown Prince Mu’s direction) switch out the alcohol Eun’s drinking for something that’s probably much stronger.

Princess Yeonhwa organized the event, and makes it known that she’ll be married off soon to a powerful family far outside the palace. Yo is not happy, and Eun doesn’t know any better, since he gets wasted in no time at all.

Yo drags Yeonhwa out to tell her to just come to him rather than be married off (yes, he means it exactly the way you wish he wasn’t), since he knows that she wants to make her brother, Wook, the king. But if that happened, she’d still only be a princess—if she married him, she’d be queen.

For as mean as Yeonhwa can be, she aptly fires back that she wouldn’t be Yo’s first wife, so this whole queen talk doesn’t really hold much water. Would he give up his other wives for her? “I don’t give up what’s mine just to get a girl,” Yo growls, before pulling her in against her will. Then, he leans in to kiss her…

But thankfully So sees and interrupts before he can. Yo leaves in a huff, and So tells Yeonhwa to take Yo off her balancing scales (implying that she’s weighing all her options), because she won’t get what she wants from Yo. She counters that if he doesn’t want her to marry Yo, he should offer her something better: “Do you not want to step onto my scale?” Every time she comes onto him I feel like hitting her with a rolled-up newspaper.

After being given leave by Court Lady Oh to throw her own party for Eun, Su sets up decorations, replete with her own chibi drawings of the prince, she finds Eun drunkenly stumbling back to his quarters. He’s so drunk he sees three of her, and she just shakes her head.

Thirteenth prince Baek-ah and fourteenth prince Jung also leave the party, only to come face to face with a bear… or rather, the general’s daughter, Soon-deok, wearing her bear pelt. Baek-ah recognizes her immediately, and she just brushes past them with a surly look on her face, intent on getting to her target.

Eun is over the moon when Su shows him the party spread she’s prepared for him, and is more than happy to wear the silly birthday hat she’s made for him. Su thanks him for being the first friend she made in Goryeo, and tells him she has an even more special gift: She sings “Happy Birthday” for him, while adding some flourishes of her own. Wait, is that… the robot? Is she doing the robot?

So sees the display and laughs, much to Princess Yeonhwa’s ire. The other princes soon come upon them, with Crown Prince Mu revealing that he was in on the plot to let Court Lady Oh let Su take the day. It’s hilarious how all the princes get after ninth prince Won for comparing Su to a gisaeng, even though he meant it in the good way. (Gisaeng were known for their singing and dancing, which wasn’t a very common practice for noble ladies.)

But the boys all want her to sing for them too, even though Eun would rather keep her all to himself. Su obliges, and they all fall silent as she launches into a simple, yet thoroughly modern song. So and Wook seem most entranced by her, but it seems safe to say that all the boys have now fallen under her spell.

So seems especially moved, and once he becomes aware of it, he awkwardly leaves. A morose-looking Soon-deok watches from beneath her bear suit—is she looking at Eun? I can’t tell.

Jealous over Su’s little display, Princess Yeonhwa tries to send her off when the boys aren’t looking. Su doesn’t take kindly to the princess reminding her of her place, but luckily, Crown Prince Mu intervenes. It was he who gave Su permission to throw the party, because Eun enjoys spending time with her. That was the present he thought to give to his little brother.

Princess Yeonhwa acts nice as she takes her leave, but not before shooting Su a terrible glare. The crown prince and Su get to share a friendly moment, with him thanking her for helping him, and Su promising to help him in the future if he ever needs it.

Eun gets his presents next, and while some are toys (which he loves), Jung gifts him a book, which he’s much less happy about. Wook and Su smile at each other as Eun opens his gifts, but then they all get a shock when Soon-deok, still dressed as a bear, lays a paw on Eun’s shoulder.

It takes a moment for Eun to recognize her as Grand General Park’s daughter, and she stutters that the pelt is for him as she hands it over. She stutters enough for it to seem like a problem, and Eun breaks her poor heart by not liking her gift. (From the sound of it, she used to gift him bear pelts when they were younger, which he didn’t even like back then.)

So takes some time to himself, but he can’t stop from thinking about Su. Baek-ah tries to bring him back to the festivities, and resorts to pulling him back when So doesn’t want to go.

Inside, Yo seems to deliberately ask Eun what gift So gave him, only for Eun to reply that it was enough that So even came. Yo claims that there’s a special present only So could give before whispering something to Eun, only for him to reply that So wouldn’t give him something like that. I wonder what game Yo’s playing.

Eun runs over to Su to ask if she knows anything about the gift, and if she can help him get it. That’s when Baek-ah drags So back into the party, and he can’t help but smile a little when he catches Su smiling at him.

Yo puts So on the spot for not getting a gift, so So offers to get his younger brother anything he wants in return. Eun makes him promise, and once he does, Eun innocently asks: “Show me your face without the mask!” So that’s what Yo suggested. What a douche.

Crown Prince Mu admonishes Eun for asking for such a gift, and Eun ends up implicating Su in the plot, because he can’t seem to take a hint. So relents and carefully unties his mask in front of everyone.

Revealing his whole face, his scarred face, causes Princess Yeonhwa’s hand to go to her mouth in shock. So locks eyes with Su before he finally can’t take anymore and leaves. Yo laughs, and Yeonhwa demands that Eun apologize to his older brother. Crown Prince Mu admonishes the lot of them, but mostly Yo, for exploiting people’s weak spots far too often.

Yo scoffs at the crown prince’s words, and wonders aloud if he must’ve taken it personally when he said Mu’s in-laws were too lowly, and that he had a lot of nerve to remain as crown prince. Yikes.

Su chases after So, who ends up taking out his frustration on her. She tries to get him to stay so that he can hear Eun’s apology or else he’ll rip all the brothers apart, but So uses the hand she lays on his own to push her up against a column.

“Look at me. Look at me properly!” he commands, face to face with her now. “That look… that look in your eyes… I hate it so much that it makes me crazy.”

Su can only stare at him with that look, and he stares right back.

COMMENTS

Way to go, Eun. You’re young, but you’re not so young that you wouldn’t understand social cues, or the difference between right and wrong. It would’ve made more sense if he was still drunk, but he seemed to sober up rather quickly between the first round of festivities and the third—why’d he have to go and do that? And just when So was trying to be an accommodating older brother, too.

It feels like So gets kicked every time he’s even remotely happy, which is more of a reason for him to turn his back against the world than if he were to get kicked every time he was down. Every moment of happiness has to be earned, and it always comes at a cost, so it figures that So would be extra wary of opening up to others and becoming vulnerable. And though Yo might disagree, what So did in unmasking himself took more guts than it would’ve taken to just keep his mask on. He made a promise, and he had his pride to consider. Now, all bets are off.

This now seems like a minor issue when there’s such systemic editing problems going on, but I do wish the production had been a bit braver with So’s scar. Though the show established how unwanted any bodily flaws are among royalty, enough to justify why So would be ashamed of even light scarring on his face, it’s not enough to even distract from how pretty he is. I totally realize that’s hardly a valid complaint, but it would’ve been truly tragic if the scar was more than just a couple scratches, enough for So to feel like he had to hide that ugliness from the world. Right now, we have to kind of put ourselves in the time period to understand just how big of a deal that scar is—of course, it wouldn’t be pretty in any time period. Maybe it’s just that Lee Jun-ki sells it too well, so on this side of the screen I’m just left to think that the scar isn’t as distracting as it seems meant to be. Again, hardly a complaint, I know.

I like that this episode more or less established So’s crush on Su, and for once, warranted an actual flashback montage of their moments together. We needed to be reminded that they did have these meaningful moments, and it would make sense that So didn’t think much of them until his new feelings came to light. Now, he remembers every moment because it means something, which means trouble is bound to brew for the too-cute Wook and Su couple. (That calligraphy scene? Stick a fork in me, I was done.)

It’s a bit harder to reconcile the vulnerable So we’ve kinda sorta come to know with the cold-hearted, brutal prince that he can be, and nothing brought that more into focus than So’s conversation with Grand General Park. Though we barely got to see General Park, it became clear that his moral compass operates much differently than So’s—and that So, even when reminded of this, would choose to stand by his horrific actions without even a shred of remorse. It didn’t seem like false bravado as much as So being fully convinced that what he did was just and good, which is actually more frightening than if he was just putting up a front. Don’t let the dark side have you, So!

On the other hand, it was refreshing to see Su having more interaction with the princes, which helped to justify their attentiveness toward her. While it’s still strange to think of the levelheaded crown prince temporarily losing his mind, it served to help him see that Su only ever means well, effectively netting her another strong ally. Plus, that birthday party was adorable, and even more so because the crown prince sanctioned it. Regardless, Eun’s going to have to work to make up for what he just pulled, birthday or no. Good luck.

Did anyone else wonder if the two teams for the game they were playing will be the two teams fighting each other soon? Wook, Yo, Won and Eun against Mu, So, Baek Ah and Jung?

you mean Wook, Yo, Won, Jung vs So, Mu, Baek Ah, Eun?

I think that will be the setting, we already have Mu and Baek Ah on So's side, about Eun, that child, I'm not sure but he'll marry the general's daughter soon so maybe

I hope not... I can't imagine Wook and Yo on the same side, but you know, we never know with this drama.

[chinese drama spoiler]
In the ori, the allies were 4th and 13th, and camp 8th prince, consisting of 8th, 9th, 10th, 14th.

This must be after Crown Prince and 3rd (Yo) dies?

Then yeah, I can see that division. Baek Ah doesn't follow Wook like the rest of the brothers, probably because he had that jealousy problem about Lady Hae, and he and So would be a more natural fit cause he also doesn't appear to be crushing on Su.

The rest of them would be closer having grown up together and seeing Wook as their elder brother not the stranger So with his scarred face.

There is something off about this drama, I couldn't single it out, but I wish it was more mature... probably the writing? But damn, how this show pulls me in, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Also, LJK's existence is enough to satisfy my thirsty soul to no end.

Same here... Something is off with the writing and the directing, probably it lacks some coherence, cohesiveness and maturity, but the 4th prince has some sort of hypnotic effect on me, his stare makes me dizzy and his expressions hide so many layers and meanings that I cannot stop thinking about it. I'm also liking our eroine way more, compared to the beginning...

When So reveals his face to the rest, everyone, except for evil #3, was actually looking away, which he perceives as out of disgust. Only Su was looking at him right in the eye, and that means a lot to him. For someone who is considered to be a disfigured monster, having direct eye contact shows that Su is not turned away by his 'flawed' face (cos it's lee joon ki, 'nuff said) and actually sees him for the person he is. Remember what he said to Bitchy Princess in the earlier ep that he wants someone who can see the real him and value him despite the scars. So it really scares him a lot, because maybe this is the first time that someone actually fearlessly looked right at him and he does not know how to deal with it.... But come on, it's lee joon ki! Who wouldn't want to stare at him and the scars do not detract from his charm at all :D

Anyway, wanted to swoon at the new twist of 'kabedon' using a smooth wrist grab! lolllll even though I know it's not out of romantic intent, it's more like he's trying to scare her away by forcing eye contact in such close proximity....

SH is watchable mainly because of LJK and KHN. LJK is such a wonderful actor. IU is doing alright even though she is not a seasoned actress.

As a fan of the C-version and the novel - SH is a mess at the moment. The hip hop music, messy hair styles and editing just don't cut it for me.

In fact I think the actor playing 3rd prince is doing a good job portraying the villain. At least he has a purpose in the show! 10 and 14 are like wall flowers. Quite unnecessary.

I hope the plot and love story will progress from ep 8. The scar looks pretty ok actually...So is still a beautiful man.

that prince is out of chances, he's gonna get his butt kicked, if not by anyone else, then by me. he's too stupid to live... too easily manipulated.

poor so... but he's so brave to do it anyway. his brother(s) should all apologize, but i guess it won't happen, because they're way too proud and stupid. serves them right if so kills them all eventually, (okay not really.)

the scar IS a big deal - a little scar stops soo being married to the king, doesn't it? so scarring in the royal family anyway is a big no-no. and i liked the "different classes" princes tale. it means that things that the crown prince might get away with wouldn't be forgiven of some other prince, right?... hmmm.

but, on the long run, now soo is scarred, does it mean she won't be able to marry so eventually?!!!!!!

“That look… that look in your eyes… I hate it so much that it makes me crazy.”

What look? Su has been sporting that wide-eyed look since her first day in Goryeo. Or did I miss a micro-expression too?

And Eun needs to learn more social cues. Everyone definitely felt the tension in that room EXCEPT him!

The last 5 minutes were so so good, there was so much pain and uncertainty in So's eyes in the last scene, I really felt it.

And I actually like Yeonwha's character in that she has dreams and ambitions and isn't just a plot device used when needed.

Too true. I might be squicky about her obvious yen for So (-did anyone catch her glancing at him during the party to gauge his reaction to her announcement that she was likely to be married off soon?) but the girl knows what she wants and looks like she's willing to go the distance to get it.

I don't mind 9th Prince Won, but I feel like they definitely could've gone without him for this show and just beefed up the other characters more. Personally, I really like Yeonhwa, and I REALLY wish I got to see that scene of her pushing another marriage to Wook, but the edit I saw did not include that scene. Even though the action itself is bad (for Soo and Wook obviously) I like how Yeonhwa really tries to help Wook. I hope her character isn't as cynical as Yo.

Are this missing numbers of princes confusing anyone else either? Where's 2, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12? I thought maybe Yeonhwa would fill one of those spots. And is it confirmed that the only 100% related brothers are Yo, So, and Jung, with all others being from separate mothers?

Also I know no spoilers but... gah that preview from 8! What is happening!?

I think number 2 might've possibly been Yo, So and Jung's older brother who died, as mentioned by Queen (name too long) in the first episode? and the other non-numbered princes might've either died, or their mother's clan lost so much influence that they were sent to live outside the palace like So was, and hence would become a non-contender for the throne.

But I think the numbering was more so because they were following the numbers from the original Chinese drama. In which some of the princes who weren't around were either dead or exiled.

Historically, no.2 was Yo, So, and Jung's elder brother Wang Tae--the show kills him off early and it seems like there are not many historical records on him either. The numbers of the princes we see in the show have all been changed too (except for Yo and So): historically Jung was 5, Wook was 7, Baek Ah was 8, Won was 15, and Eun was either 11 or 20.

Yo, So, and Jung share the same mother (Queen Sinmyeongsunseong), while the others all have different mothers: Mu's mother was Queen Janghwa of the Oh clan, Wook's mother was Queen Sinjeong of the Hwangbo clan, Baek Ah's mother was Queen Sinseong of the Kim clan (she was also a Silla princess), Won's mother was Lady Dongyangwon of the Yu clan, and Eun's mother was either Lady Sogwangjuwon of the Wang clan or Queen Jeongdeok of the Yoo clan.

I'm just taking this from Wiki so yeah :)

Are we not gonna talk about the So-Su garden scene where So was wearing an orange-ish robe and Su was wearing the Damiwon court lady uniform? Isn't that what they were wearing where they kiss in the long trailer?

So's robes here are a peachy-coral shade, while in the trailer, they were burnt orange. Soo, on the other hand, was wearing white there, not her Damiwon uniform.
And it's a little too soon for them to share a kiss, don't you think? ;) I personally wouldn't mind more build-up to their slow-burning romance.

WOW what an episode !!
I am hoping for a satisfactory happy ending, i mean its not REALLY important we are shown the actual historical facts....school good enough for that. I am really hoping the writers put their twist to the story and STOP with the two different edited versions already !! ><
Also i just finished watching ep7 and finally So and Su are shown together....seems like the beginning of a romance. \^o^/
I'll be very disappointed if this series ended being a tragic one.....after the let down from Uncontrollably fond....i need this to cheer me up.
So far this series is on its way to becoming one of my fav series of 2016....dont screw it up please please !!

Can’t wait to find out what happens to Su and her princes? Scarlet Butts is here to make your days until next week easier….

SCARLET BUTTS

So: If I tell you a secret, will you swear to tell no one, not a soul about it?

Wook: By the hooded eyelids of my languorous eyes, the beaked slant of my noble nose, the dazzling gleam of my alabaster teeth, and the strong chiselled squareness of my jaw, I swear to you that I will never breathe a word to any soul, living or dead.

So: Go on talking like this, you’re going to get locked up somewhere sooner or later, prince or not…do you know the real reason why I survived the wolves the night I was thrown into their den?

Wook: Pray tell.

So: It was because I spoke the language of the wolves.
Wook: Upon my soul! What were the words of the wolves?

So: The wolves said, “Woo wooo wooo woooo wooooo woo."

Wook: I know not what those words mean, for I have yet to master the language of the wolves.

So: The wolves said, “Human with strange scary mask, you are hot. You are way too hot to die.” And they let me live.

Wook: You have shared your secret with me. I am deeply honoured. I will share mine with you as well, but my secret is, how shall I put it, more delicate…

So: Please go on.

Wook: Two nights ago, I was at my desk. As always, I was feeling pensive and melancholic, then all of a sudden I felt heat rising from my pants.

So: You are hot like me. It is natural you should feel heat rising from your pants –

Wook: Wait, there is more – I looked down, and to my horror, I saw smoke billowing from my pants! My pants had caught fire from a fallen candle!

So: By the stars! What did you do?

Wook: Fortunately, there was a wooden bucket placed next to my desk, which was filled with water, left there by a forgetful maid; I lowered my lower abdomen hastily into the bucket – it is a good thing I have narrow hips - making sure my buttocks were completely submerged in the water. The flames were doused in no time, but alas, my buttocks were scorched, and had turned an angry hue of scarlet. One cheek is still painful, but the other is no longer scarlet – thank the gods – and turns pinker by the day.

- continued

So: What a remarkable coincidence! For I, too, have a scarlet buttock!

Wook: What? How?

So : I hunted down a horde of tongueless assassins and torched their temple hideout till it burnt to the ground. Unfortunately, a flying ember latched onto my breeches and scorched my right buttock quite badly. It turned a bright scarlet and caused me a few sleepless nights. You may have noticed I have not been riding my horse lately – a crust is forming, and it is still very fragile, so for now, I am forced to hunt assassins on foot.

Wook: Would you like some salve? I have an excellent healing salve –

So: I have my own solution. When my buttock aches, I look for the thickest pile of snow I can find, and sit in it. The pain ebbs very quickly.

Wook: You and I are more alike than we thought.

So: Here is my hand of friendship. And one more thing –
Wook: Yes?

So: When you look at me in the way you are looking at me now, it makes me feel strange all over….

Wook: I apologise -

So: - and there is this strange fog that wraps around you like a cloud when you flutter your eyelids and move your lips and hell, now you’re smiling at me – !

Wook: Brother, you are not alone on that score for I, too, find it hard to tear my eyes away from my own reflection. But we are friends now – do take off your mask and let me rub my healing salve onto your scar –

So: No.

Wook: My salving skills are second to none; my fingers will transport you to the realm of bliss as they skim feathery-light like a whisper upon your skin -

So: - come any closer and I’m drawing my sword…!!!

~ End ~

Perhaps it's a reflection of my age but the more I see Uk and Soo together, the less enamoured I am of their relationship. I adore KHN and he has the smile to break a thousand hearts and sell toothpaste but there's something off in this relationship. It feels like they're living in some... I dunno... teenage fantasy, for want of a better expression... cocooning themselves from the harsh realities of being in the situation that they're in. I have to wonder if he's thought through the ramifications of them having a relationship. Yes, yes... secret hugs behind panels is all very cute but is it fair on Soo? He is powerless and as egregiously ambitious as his sister is, she's right about that. He is overflowing with good intentions but delivers little.

It also troubles me that after the incident of the slashing of the wrist all he could think of was how he was afraid he could lose her. Maybe it's just me overthinking it but the way his response was framed gave me food for thought.

Contrast that with So's remonstrance... "You could have died! If the cut had been a little deeper, you would have died" Ever the realist, he says to her, "Did you think about what it would be like to live with a scar?" He drove home the consequences of her actions and pushed it to its logical conclusion.

I loved that confrontation in that there was something grounded, raw and honest about it. It is as if he was saying, "It was dumb luck kiddo. There's no happy ending in this. This is not a place of happily ever and happy endings. Didn't you want to live?"

To me Soo and So strikes at the heart of Soo and Uk. It negates the sentimentality of the latter. I imagine that when they come together it won't be boy meets girl. It will be Dark Knight meets modern girl.

Bring it on!

Wow, that is a really cool point about So and Wook's contrasting responses to Su's scar - and those responses are telling.

I was absolutely feeling Su and Wook right along with the potential of So and Su, but I agree that this episode really did make it clear they can't be together - he can steal moments of her time and teach her to write his name (a tremendously intimate gesture in its own right) but there's a sense of a door closing on their romance, even if they don't know it yet.

0

Required fields are marked *

Ahhh A+++ insight on So and Wook. I agree with everything you said about Wook cocooning himself and Su in a fluffy romance away from the cruelty of the world, because that's so true, even if their romance is compelling because of its doomed ending.

I think it's very telling that So and Wook have such different personalities despite having been outed of the palace before. Wook, no matter that he was cast out, is still ultimately sheltered enough by his family that he chooses to close an eye to the suffocating trap that the palace is. In contrast is So, who knows exactly what sort of ruthlessness lies beneath the grand facade of the palace, and he's not afraid to show the truth to the people that he considers important enough--like Su.

I also find super interesting how Wook seems to think it'll be easy to get Su out of the palace. So is not as optimistic, but I think his realism is definitely more valuable.

I love your analysis, Lilium!

Wook and Su had some super cute moments in this episode, but I was not 100% into it. Even if I didn't already ship So and Su, I still couldn't fully support Wook and Su because of Lady Hae. I thought Wook would have been more careful with his affection. I'd prefer it if they just maintained a friendship... But I don't know if that will be possible later on.

8th prince only thinks about himself, only talks about himself, has a pity party with himself. Su is just there to comfort him I guess. Have they even have had a legit conversation where he talks about her and not his feelings? I can't even think of one that was important enough to remember?

When Su told him she couldn't read or write, the first thing he shows her how to write is his name because be damned with her own name, that's not important here! He's too much.

I thought I was the only one who was thinking along those lines and that maybe I was reading him wrong. But there is definitely something of the narcissist in him. The handsome and charming demeanour has been a very effective cover for the dark undertones of his personality.

And I agree about the pity party in Ep. 6 and the name writing in Ep. 7. Especially the name writing incident which although seemed romantic and very intimate felt odd to me because I was also expecting him to teach her how to write her name not his.

I think Court Lady Oh might have been King Taejo's... lover?
and so she will see Su as a reflection of herself, that's why she becomes harsh but at the same time cares for her (that's how I feel from her actions towards Su)
anyway her character is very intriguing

0

Required fields are marked *

Court Lady Oh was a lover of Taejo's before he became King, it says in the description, and she is still, I believe his concubine as she is called Concubine Oh by one of the Queens. We also know that Mu's mother was from the Oh clan. It is possible that Court Lady Oh is Mu's mother or is related to Mu's mother, but was never of high enough status to be made a queen (though if Mu becomes King, she could be made a queen then - this did happen in those times). She certainly seems to care about him and is close to him. OTOH, she doesn't look old enough to be his mother. I dunno.

I really like your point here about her seeing Su as a reflection of herself. It might be why she seems somewhat understanding about her relationship with Wook, leaving them together to say goodbye that one time. Can't wait to hear her story.

I wondered if she was his mother, but I thought even if we didn't yet have a hint of it in the drama someone would have spoiled it on a forum somewhere.

I think it would be really interesting if true, but I don't really understand how Mu could be Crown Prince if his mother is not a Queen. Actually now that I think about it I think Yo said Mu married an Oh woman. So maybe the king made a match with the Oh's for his son because of his love for Concubine Oh?

Court Lady Oh is definitely not Crown Prince's mother because the way he speaks to her is kinda like "banmal" (informal speech). If you were to speak to your parents you'd speak with formal tone.

I always thought, at least from Su's perspective, it was less about the "ugliness" of the scar and more about HOW he got the scar. His OWN MOTHER, for crying out loud, did this to him and she has obviously brought up her other two sons to resent him. I think it's more of a constant reminder that he is rejected and unwanted even by his own blood. In addition to the feelings of rejection, I think he may almost feel ASHAMED that he is unloved by his mother. Like its a personal failing despite him never having done anything but try to make amends with her. So, the siblings reactions to seeing the scar is very superficial (that is, it is "ugly" among royalty) but for So it is more like putting himself on display, telling everyone (despite the fact except Crown Prince, no one seems to know how he got it) that he is rejected and undeserving of love from his mother. The mask provides a literal cover and a metaphorical cover for his hidden feelings of rejection and lonliness.

Come to think of it, not even all the princes know that his mother caused the scar - remember Jung saying it was a rumour he heard in the marketplace that the queen herself scarred So?

Obviously Mu knows since he was there and saved So, and I think we have enough hints that Yo knows too, but we don't see that awareness out of the princes who are after So in the birth order.

The Su-So ship is what makes SH so addictive for me like i can't wait for them to get together. But i am so disappointed in how messy the production is. The main couple are so good and I just want to see more of LJK, and I don't exactly hate Eun but my heart burns thinking how much wasted screen time there is because of him.

Also am I the only one who is sooo annoyed by the extremely close-up shots. I don't mind one or two but there are so many it annoys me so much. I wish we could get more long shots or atlas the camera isn't so close to the actors face when they're speaking.

It's worth taking note that the when Su made a mistake while serving tea to the third prince, he didn't react the way he did with the other maid in an earlier episode.

Secondly in the c-drama, rouxi knows the fate of the 8th and she parts with him because as she asks him to give up the desire for the throne. It will be interesting how she parts from the 8th since in the k-drama she does not know how things work out.

In the c-drama she was careful of the 4th coz she know he will be sitting in the throne and will get rid of his brothers but in the k drama she is vigilant of him because of genuine care and concern.

This episode hints that So realized that he is attracted to Su. I like it and as he reflects back he realized he does find her pretty ( the night when snow fell and Su said it's pretty , So was watching her and found "her" pretty.

The look in su's eyes? The look that So said he can't stand,What was it? I feel he can't stand how unaffected Su is by his appearance. She makes him feel normal and that gives him hope. It I. A way is forcing him to be better than he has been. The way he is is also a result of how the world treats him. That was re asserted when he took off his mask in front of his family!

Is anyone else really looking forward to finding out more about So now that we seem to be switching over in that direction? I mean, what was up with that weird adoption, fighting off wolves in caves, the "secret" martial training from the general via the King, etc. We know he can be cruel, thoughtless (who gallops a horse down a crowded street?), ruthless and I don't think he gives the commoners a passing thought. Is he ambitious? Is he conniving? How good is he at playing the palace games?

I'm just really looking forward to finding out a lot more about him.

I must say, LJG is in a class of his own.

KHN is also excellent as the love-struck WW, but I just can't fall for him. Too much stuttering, too much crying... too wimpy. This from a potential king? The only time I thought he was king material was when he was fighting off the bad guys when they were saving HS and WJ.

Lookwise, IU fits the target age better than LSS did in C-BBJX, but LSS portrayed Ruoxi (HS) with a lot more depth. It helps that in the C-version, viewers are always made aware of the passing of time. Here, everything is too fast. We had heavy winter like 2 seconds ago and then it is summery. Ish.

I get that these are 2 separate versions - each to be enjoyed on its own merits. And I agree LJG is waaayyyy more attractive than NW. Change the story, change the setting but I wish I can find the things that made my heart skip a beat like the C-version.

In the C-version, Ruoxi and 4th were a slow burn. Even until today, people kept guessing WHEN was the exact moment that LOVE happened between the two because when it happened it was so intense that Ruoxi survived being demoted and separated and waiting for 4th until their short-lived time together. If we can get that intensity, even if much later in the K-series, I would feel happy. I guess it hekped that C-4th is an unassuming prince. He wasn't portrayed as a strong skilled fighter like WS. He is unfavoured but not abandoned. He wasn't the most good looking of the bunch. And then he became emperor.

The C-8th is an elegant politician. Well liked by peers and politicians, very subtle in actions but thank God, not a wimpy one!

And I think the best part of C-BBJX is also human ties between siblings, father and sons and of course between Ruoxi and everyone. But here, K-4th is an outcast from very early on that his closeness with Baek Ah pales when compared with the bromance of C-4th and C-13th.

I wish IU can do with her eyes what LJG does with his eyes. IU tried, but she's not quite there yet. I don't quite feel happiness, helplessness, joy, disappointment etc, the way LSS's did. This is extremely telling because prior to C-BBJX, LSS is quite wooden.

Weird choice of OST too. Most of the time. C-BBJX did not have a lot of tracks but the 3 main titles fits all situations - happiness, sadness, concern.

There's still some 13 eps to go. Come on K-BBJX!! Please pull my heartstrings and pull 'em hard!!!

it seems like they loose the depth, juvenile? like teens drama, no perspective deep enough to get shown or conflict deep enought to get understand each episode, it just happen and solve without letting it having the root steem to have impact, it such a different road than the 1st episode.
This drama is the easy watch, good scenery, pretty people, no need to question much cause the show also don't explain much , just accept it as it is,
It make me loose interest gradually from the character, with better editing I expect a better plot but it maybe doesn't even a deep one from the start, it just as it show , but I hope they can fix some issue cause this ep is not as engaging as before even with the bad editing, idk what wrong but it feels a teens story and they all look like too old for this kind if plot

I think you're fine. Some will feel the chemistry and some won't. I like their scenes but ultimately, IU will love LJK, not KHN. Like Pineapplegongzhu (130.2) says that Wook is the fantasy she wishes to be true; and So is her reality, what is really true, their feelings are approaching the point that their love is not strong enough and Hae Soo will love another.

Required fields are marked *

I get so disturbed whenever Wook and Su come on the screen. I get that they are trying to sell the romance but it just doesn't buy me. Lady Hae is probably the main reason. When Soo escaped her marriage to the King, Wook came to visit her and said he prayed to his wife that he doesn't want to lost Soo and if Soo comes back to him, he will shower Soo with all the love he couldn't give to his wife. At that point of time, wtf are you serious. Your wife just died and that's what you are praying to her for, don't you even feel sorry. I mean Wook was crying so badly after the funeral that he said he loved his wife until she passed away. Then what's with Wook and Su, just couldn't feel the love and it doesn't feel right

Ahh, so endlessly fascinating! You can almost see the ending of their idyllic days and the stage being set for conflict. After a long time, there was a focus on all the princes together, which to me seems pretty portentous of an impending breakdown.

I think this episode connects extremely well with Hae Soo’s established persona. I love the narrative disjunct between the eternal optimist in her, that keeps convincing her that she is and will be okay, and the navigation that the palace and its people require. I found it interesting that So told her that the only way to survive the palace is to trust no one and that everyone is alone in it, and her response, which would be typical in a drama context- in that she tells him indirectly that she trusts him- is weighed down by the fact that she’s already revealed it as a liability earlier. Ordinarily, the optimist or the person who trusts others is the narrative’s moral compass, especially in a setting like the kingdom where everyone has an agenda. But Su in the very first scene of the drama had said that she wished she hadn’t trusted the people so close to her easily. That she kept believing that if she didn’t change, then the people around her, whom she loved and trusted, wouldn’t change either. And she was wrong. And that’s exactly what she’s doing all over again— if she doesn’t change, then nothing will. I love that this trait of hers is established as a fatal flaw so early on.

I also honestly like the fact that the drama isn’t entirely straightforward. It doesn’t only establish set ups and lead up to expected denouncements, but manages to slip in interactions that shift the tonality of the scene. And that priority is given to human emotion over political maneuvering in potential warfare. Wars aren’t entirely rational, there is no model of what a catalyst can be; a petty humiliation, years of oppression. Like, during the scar reveal with everyone turning their gazes away except Su. But when So walks away and Su follows him, it is for comfort, it is for compassion, maybe even sympathy— but it’s not only for that. I absolutely loved that part in the following scene where she says, “the moment you walk away, the tenth prince loses his chance to apologize. You will all grow apart.” Because she doesn’t know the exact history of the period, there’s always this underlying fear about who exactly Gwangjong is, what exactly is the trigger point for the battle for throne ascension. Her desperate attempt to trust, to believe that they can all be an unchanging constant, is undercut by this fear. History is constantly in her way- last episode she even considered Wook. And I appreciate that it’s not pronounced, but it’s there at the back of her mind. Her interactions aren’t shaped by that, but they’re colored by that. I am thoroughly enjoying this vacillation between what she wants to believe and what she knows, because it makes her own personality such an important aspect of the plot.

I really like your rumination on Su's inclination to swing between what she knows and what she wants to believe. It's clearly what's going to define a lot of her decisions and actions in the future, seeing as to how she constantly has the shadow of Gwangjong killing his brothers on her mind now. I think the creative decision to not let Su know who Gwangjong really is is a good one, in the sense that it's going to be an entirely different process from Ruoxi's journey in the original, but the end game is likely to be the same.

I am fascinated (morbidly lol) by the possibility that Su's presence is only to facilitate the movement of history on its proper track--that despite her attempts to overstretch herself and try to cover all of the brothers so that they don't turn into this nightmare version of Gwangjong that she's had a vision of, Gwangjong is still going to happen. He's still going to kill a bunch of people, despite her belief that she can help to keep these brothers together as brothers and prevent that sort of bloodshed. The fact that history is likely to be unchanged because of her beliefs makes for a compelling parallel against her original belief that if she doesn't change no one else will.

A one-woman battle against history--that's terrifying, to say the least.

Perhaps Wook and So represent exactly the disjunct that Su struggles with, which is what draws her to each of them.

Wook is the fantasy she wishes to be true; and So is her reality, what is really true.

There is nothing wrong with his scar, it just doesn't appear to be scary to me at all..

I think the problem with that scar is not just that he makes him "ugly", but that it reminds everybody of an episode the royal family cannot be proud of, a shameful, gratuitous act by the queen and the king. I also think that this is the ultimate reason why they sent him away is this: his "ugliness" reminds his parents how ugly they are and publicly show it.

i remember is was mentioned that anyone with a scar especially on face, might be barred from even entering the city.. (during the earlier ep when So came back and if not for the prince title, he wouldnt be able to enter town most likely with that scar-look)

if commonner take it that bad, i think it can only be worse in the palace

I think the editing of the drama is very strange at times, but I also feel that some things only seem rushed mostly because this drama packs a lot in a few scenes and doesn't delineate its scenes in slots-- a moment can be romantic and political and historical at the same time, and thus has to be seen as furthering three arcs, otherwise it would just appear disjointed. The drama recognizes, as political theorists would have it, that the personal is political. Su following So is not just romantic, it relates to her fear of who Gwangjong is and thus the incident that may act as catalyst for the political upheaval, Baek Ah's talk of freedom and status with Su, as told to So, doesn't just relate to his past love or saving Su from a forced marriage, but also to the direct reforms that Gwangjong will implement during his reign, including the civil services. Maybe that's why the discussion is so intense, because there's so many different threads of discussions to be had from the same scenes.

nobody talk about the small interaction between the general and so, but it was an important part: so acclimatization in the palace it's the end of his "innocence":
as he tries to justify his earlier murders on the battlefield - but if someone wants to kill you, you do not need to justify why you fought and killed for your life

That's true, I think we've earlier always seen him pushed to the edge, battling the wolves, battling people when he has to, but the mass murder of the monks was never entirely necessary, there was a hint of obsession to his actions, how far he was willing to go- not only to save his mother, but to prove to his mother that he's worthy. The significance of the scar is not the scar itself and how terrifying it looks or doesn't, but that the scar is a source of legend and how it psychologically affects him and those around him. Because he keeps it hidden, the stories only grow, as does his own fear of it in a way.

Ahhh forgot to add..in a rare moment of levity for Prince So, that scene where he was giving her suggestions on how to be a better garden care-taker had me snorting.

I'm not sure if it was the subs or if he DID actually suggest the names, but I lost it when he christened the tree that produced fruits that caused gas as "Fartie."

And then I cried again when he revealed that his best friend in Shinju was a tree and he had to burn it to survive the wolves. (That was the gist at least).

God damn it, always an emotional rollercoaster with this Prince.

All I could think of during this scene was Thomas Jefferson's "pet trees" at Monticello... but I'm pretty sure he kept to Latin taxonomy.

I knew mulberries can be a pain because my grandparents had one in their yard (handy hint: do not park a white car beneath one)... but I had no idea about their gastric ramifications. LOL.

I liked that scene because is showed a glimpse how So's personality could have been different without the trauma caused by the rejection of his family.

How sad it is that he considered a tree his best friend (and raised it probably for a year?) to then kill it himself?

Ultimately, he'll do the exact same thing with his brothers. This drama is in a way very cruel to its characters.

I am amused how some comments would utterly say 'bad editing' and thing like that. I wonder if these guys are film production students or professionals for them to be in a position to say those things.

Since this has been raised, how about "badly written"?

Now that we are watching different versions of the same episode:
SBS version has one or two scenes not included in the Youku/One Asia/ Dramafever version. Or vice versa.
And based from the comments, the lack of those scenes in one version took away what could have been the precursor to an important scene.
It means the scenes were on the script, they were filmed, but was cut out in the editing room.
So, depending on which version you watched, it has an impact on what story or events or character interactions etc are told/shown on your screen.

Also, the comments on "flow" of the show being better on an episode than the one before it or vice versa. This song or music is not on version A and give certain feelings/atmosphere/tone but same scene on version B has different song/music and evoke a different feeling.
Arranging footage or clips sequences and adding music= part of editing.

ep 6 was horrible (im not speaking in terms of professional).. just common ppl like u and me would have spotted it..

they had included scenes which should had been shown for earlier ep especially the bonding part between 4 and 13th.. (the clothes and timeline totally doesnt flow when it suddenly appear in ep6) and with that, it makes sense why the earlier ep 4/5 when hae-soo was punished by princess over the hairpin, the 4 and 13th appear together..

if we didnt see so many versions, we might not be able to find out those hidden scene or scene edited out (except for the actors or the production who does it themselves) or whether is it like that or not..

but if u watch both versions (though there might be more scenes not shown due to time..) the editing is simply adding more scene to enrich the plot and the other is shortening certain scene to accommodate to the time..

its really about planning i guess (and this case, poor planning is obvious, if not why would they bother to edit again when its pre-produced and international copy is already ready).. since they know what are suppose to be in the respective episode way before filming

I just rewatched ep1 and was struck that the real Hae Su's accident seemed completely ignored (until now)
and it was really mysterious
why she was there and why she was "drowing"?
like it was not normal for a "calm" girl like her (Lady Hae's words though) to sneek into a place like that
and the conversation between Su(Ha Jin) and Wook in the library seemed strange too, his questions just gave me the vibe that he was checking whether she really did lost her memory or not and when Su appeared to forget everything I sensed some sight of relief from him
it's just my two cents (+imagination) but what if real Su had heard/witnessed something not so good about Wook and that somehow directly/indirectly lead to her accident??? and then Wook just kept observing her to make sure she was not lying and helpleslly fell in love with the new Su...

we have seen how Su got the "vision" when she lost her conciousness I doubt she'd experience it again and see something about Wook (probably the dark side or some uncomfortable truths)
or she might actually find out in real life and feel totally heartbroken and betrayed - just as Ha Jin did in 21th century (then it must be something really terrible)
that could plausibly explain why she would fall for So later
but I don't know I might have come too far...
(but I'd be very glad if they make some dark twist with Wook character thou)

Ohhhhhhhhh very plausible! Now that you've mentioned it, nobody really ever asked why Su was in the bathhouse in the first place--not even Wook, who clearly saw her face. That's oddly suspicious, but if they do pick up this thread later on and you turn out to be right, that'd be so amazing :O

If Wook does turn out to be more calculative than his present McDreamy self (which, by the looks of his character profile, may be true), then that would be such great writing for him. We haven't really seen much of his ambition for the throne yet, mostly just Yeonhwa's, but he must have some. Now I'm wondering what really makes Wook tick...

Required fields are marked *

I often find Wook pretty calculative, not straightly so but some of the camera works did give me that feeling, or maybe I just heard too much about the original version and that affects how I see him. But in some scenes where the throne is mentioned (like the conversation between the princes and Ji Mong after practice in ep1 or 2) there's this tiny hard-to-read and kind of dark expression on his face that never leaves my mind. He's interested in power but doesn't want to show it... that's how I read him when watching though...
And Chaeryung!!! She seems suspicious too (she was at the bathhouse with real Su wasn't she? she must have known something too), especially when she said she couldn't read...

Your idea is certainly interesting. I had completely forgotten about the bath house accident. Hae Su's death is the most mysterious event in this drama (time-warping pools aside).

However, when modern Hae Su emerged from the bath house waters, 8th prince said "Hae... Su?" which may show that he did not know Hae Su was in the bat house.

Actually, the only person in the palace who knew Hae Su (as of ep 1) was 8th prince's mother. Queen Yoo only met Hae Su later as she said "you're the one who hit the 10th prince".

When Chae Ryung was fussing over Hae Su's memory loss, she asked Hae Su whether she was secretly meeting a guy and that the sudden amnesia was all a ploy.

So, I think this may have been what happened to poor Goryeo Hae Su. Hae Su and 8th prince have been secretly meeting. In ep 1, Hae Su received a letter to meet 8th prince in bath house. Turns out it was 8th prince's mother who summoned Hae Su only to drown her in the pool so that Hae Su would no longer secretly meet up with 8th prince. I say this as it was pointed out that 8th prince mother appears not to want Hae Su as a daughter-in-law (did not honour Lady Hae's wish and did not object to Hae Su marrying the King). Chae Ryung was waiting outside the bath house all this while and went in to check on Hae Su after she did not show up for 2 hours.

So does it make sense? Is it too far fetched?

Oh, I LOVE this theory! That way, I could jump off the Wook ship and get on the So ship. It would explain how Su could change her feelings so radically in such a short amount of time. It could give the lovely KHN something really dark to work with, instead of his pining, melancholy love-struck awesomeness. And it could explain why Su gets involved in the throne battle once he realizes his perfect brother is not a nice guy.

This theory seriously made my day. Awesome.

I really liked this episode. I think it contrasted the different dynamics between the main leads love triangle very nicely.

Wook is a nice guy, but he fails when it comes to making important decisions, as others have already pointed out. Sure he treats Hae Soo’s very well, but in all honestly I think there is something lacking in their relationship, it feels like he's treating her with silk gloves, which isn't bad at all but... How come so far I've seen Hae Soo having more meaningful conversations with So than with Wook? We just have to watch the garden scene, So actually gave her useful advice while Wook only gave her promises. I think that's my favorite thing about Wang So's personality, he MAKES things happen.

I also like the new characters we've been introduced to, the general is a very straightforward person (1000+ points for being on the Wang So team) even with the king, and his daughter is very cute. Eun being a cute idiot and all, I can't wait to see how they interact, she seems like a warrior, I hope she punches a little bit of common sense into our young 10th prince.

Now let's talk about the newly smitten Wang So <3. OMG I could FEEL when he realized he fell for her. Really when she sang, it was all over his face, and the ending scene, when he told her he hated the way she looked at him OMG, I don't have enough words to express how epic I think that scene was. I think Wang So is afraid of the possibility of affection he subconsciously feels from Hae Soo, and perhaps that's the reason why he 'hates it', I think he never expected for someone to actually like him the way he is, and that's why he is scared. He looked so hurt when Stupid Eun implied that Hae Soo plotted the 'take-off-your-mask' scheme with Wang Yo... Sigh, Wang So, fighting!

This is like my first time ever commenting on DB since I'm more comfortable to be a silent reader but I'm just too engrossed with this drama I need to talk about it.

I honestly loveeeee episode 7 for several reasons, mainly the better editing and we can see Hae Soo's relationship with almost all the princes. But I can't help to feel angry-- frustrated even with the whole deal of scenes being cut down. The least thing that the producers (or whoever in charge) could do is to air the same version both, in Korea and internationally. *heavy sigh*

This TV show is like a drug. LJK is cocaine in human form. They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said "No, no, no!"

I feel that Su’s romance with Wook is the stuff of fairytales and romance novels (who wouldn’t fall for that stuff?!), but it isn’t “real.” Whereas So/Su’s interactions are so natural, albeit quiet, it’s how real love sneaks up on you. They both love her in different ways. Wook tries to shield and protect her as best he can (while stealing moments with her), but So actually empowers her to live within the palace political structure. I love how Su hid her illiteracy from Wook, but vulnerably asked So “What kind of place is the palace?"

The palace would be considered the pinnacle of being on top, yet So astutely comments that everyone is alone there. When the General asks why So wants to be in Songak when he could easily rule Shinju now, even though So doesn’t answer him, my guess is that he wants to belong, he wants a family….yet that is the very thing, as a prince, he will never get. The General was correct, only the prince on the throne lives in Songak. I can just smell tragedy in the air.

I agree, I feel like 8th prince is quite selfish, he likes to keep Su to himself and control her. They also live in their own bubble, but it's not healthy. So/Su is more of an intense love, and he supports her in whatever decision she makes.
