Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 10

Our heroine now has two suitors with two completely different approaches vying for her affections, and with restrictions aplenty, hers doesn’t seem the most enviable position to be in. Despite everyone having something to say in the matter, ultimately the choice is up to Su, even if that means she’ll have to find a way to make her voice heard if she hopes to change her present, much less the future.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

After his “You are mine” speech, So goes in for the kiss, and Su struggles weakly against him. Then, she goes still as a tear runs down her cheek. Only then does So pull away, his eyes intent on her face, her shaking hands.

He stumbles backward, regret over his actions seeping in. Su continues to cry silently until So grabs her by the wrist and pulls her after him. Next thing we see is fourteenth prince Jung spotting the two leaving the palace on horseback.

Jung reports what he saw to Wook, who’s in disbelief that Su would have left the palace in the first place—and with So, for that matter. He loses his temper at the fact that she, a court lady, left the palace, though Jung says that So wouldn’t have been concerned about breaking that most sacred of rules. If anyone’s going to pay, it’ll be Su.

That’s what Jung is worried about the most, and he won’t accept Wook’s order for him to just stay in the palace. He wants to help Wook look for Su, since he knows what would happen to her if she gets caught. Wook apologizes for still thinking of Jung as a child, and accepts his offer to help.

We find the two escapees looking out at the sunrise on horseback, and their conversation can only be heard in voiceover as Su notes that neither of them will be safe now. “Then should we run away?” So’s voice replies. “If you want to, I will.”

On their feet now, So explains that he had been wanting to bring her here. She looks up at him as he offers a small smile in return, but her gaze returns to the rolling waves. He asks her if she still wants him to leave the palace, claiming that he’s never brought misfortune or used his sword without caring for the costs.

Only now does Su try to convince herself that the visions she saw of So as King Gwangjong must have been a hallucination, and even if they weren’t, she should still try to stop him. When she speaks, she gives him platitudes about living life with a smile (and without spilling blood) no matter where he ends up living.

So says she needs to just say the word and he’ll run away with her, but Su insists that as a court lady, she can’t leave the palace. But the real reason is much more complicated: “I have feelings for another.” So: “Baek-ah?” Hah. Okay, he really is clueless.

When she says it isn’t, So says it’s fine as long as it’s not Baek-ah. Because he’d have to kill whoever it is she does have feelings for, and he likes Baek-ah. “You already belonged to me the day Yeonhwa was beating you and I called you mine,” he adds. “You saw me for who I was. There was no need for explanations or excuses.”

As far as her being afraid of him, he says he doesn’t believe it. “You are the only one on my side. Therefore, I am not sorry for anything. Not for kissing you, or for bringing you out here.” He adds that he won’t be sorry even if he makes threats against her for having feelings for another man, and hands her a hairpin.

Su shakes her head as she looks down at the gift, insisting that she’d only meant to help him, and that she never intended for him to have feelings for her. “Try running away from me then,” he says with a smile. Putting the hairpin in her hands, he tells her she can throw it away if she so chooses.

Wook and Jung see them on the road and promptly dismount, with Su worrying that her absence from the palace has already been noted. Wook looks positively livid as So makes it so that Jung can’t escort Su off the horse. He’ll be the one to return her to the palace.

At least Wook has enough sense to tell him that people will start to talk if they return to the palace together, but So counters that the king already gave Su to him. “Gave her to you?” Wook repeats the words, clearly not liking the taste of them in his mouth.

But then Su inexplicably says that she’ll go back to the palace with So, leaving Wook and Jung with no other options. I wonder if it’s because So would have to take the responsibility of removing her from the palace rather than the two other princes, but it’s hard to be sure.

Wook makes So promise that nothing will happen to Su on his watch before he lets them set off. “This is the last time I’ll send her away like this,” Wook tells Jung, a dangerous look in his eyes.

So brings Su back to a waiting Court Lady Oh, and immediately takes the blame for removing Su from the palace. Once he leaves, Court Lady Oh blames Su’s small act of kindness as the reason why So’s feelings have gotten out of control, and the only advice she has is for Su to wait for So’s feelings to subside.

Third prince Yo imparts some tips on archery to Wook, who keeps missing the mark. Yo claims that he always imagines a person as the target, and in this case, he’s clearly imagining So as he hits the target time and again. While Wook claims to take the higher road, he keeps missing, and Yo tsks at what he perceives as weakness.

Yo knows that the king is sending him away from the palace to die, but he’s resolved that he’ll come back safe and sound. He plants the seed of doubt in Wook’s mind as to who he should be targeting in the meantime—and Wook, seemingly filled with new resolve, draws his bow and fires. It’s a bullseye.

Su and Wook meet again in the not-so-secret cave beneath the baths, where she tries to explain that she only chose to return with So to be sure that Wook wouldn’t get in trouble. “I am not angry,” Wook assures her. “I am just disappointed.” Oof, that’s always worse.

Wook claims that he was always too busy worrying about the consequences of taking her out of Damiwon, yet while he was agonizing, So took the action that he couldn’t. Now, he says that he’ll request the king’s permission to marry her.

Her eyes widen at this, and Wook explains that he almost lost her to the king—he won’t make the mistake of losing her again. Su was the one who brought joy and laughter back into his life, and because of that, he’s willing to leave the palace to live the rest of his days with her, and give her all the love he never gave Lady Hae.

“Therefore, Su… will you be my wife?” Su’s instantly flooded with conflicting thoughts, as she tells herself that he won’t ever change, nor will he ever hurt her. (Is she using So as a point of comparison?) She would be happy with him. But if Gwangjong were to kill him…

Wook doesn’t get to hear any of this inner monologue, so he’s left to wonder if she no longer wants to be with him. Su says that isn’t so, prompting Wook to ask for an answer: “Will you marry me?”

Before she can answer, Court Lady Oh intervenes to take the two to task for their secret meeting. If word were to get out, Su would be killed, and Wook would be stripped of his rank and punished. Why do I get the feeling that she’s pro-So?

Once they’re alone, Court Lady Oh asks Su to leave the palace with her while she recuperates from her illness. In reality, she’s known about Su and Wook, and wants to remove Su from what she sees as a dangerous situation.

Su disagrees, saying that Wook asked her to marry him, and she wants to say yes. Court Lady Oh’s disapproval couldn’t be any more clear as she mentions that it simply wouldn’t work with So in play—the two brothers would be at each other’s throats, and she’d be in danger.

Again, Su disagrees. She trusts Wook, and knows he’s not the type to change. At this, Court Lady Oh loses her cool as she says that the palace has a way of changing people, and it’s a place where promises mean nothing. Only now does she tell her that the man she once gave her heart to is now the king of Goryeo, and though they were once lovers, the throne was more important to him.

And she, wanting to stay by his side, resolved to live as his court lady. But tears form in her eyes as she tells Su that while she once addressed the king as her lover, now she’s in charge of bathing the women who will actually be his lovers.

Regardless, Su says that she knows she can trust Wook—as long as he has no ambition for the throne, they can be happy. Court Lady Oh can only sigh, having failed to convince her.

After a night spent brooding over the hairpin So gave her, Su finds So waiting outside her quarters. He’s done a less than admirable job covering his scar, so Su invites him inside in order to help. In voiceover, she says that she’s not afraid of him, nor does she hate him. She just worries about him.

As she applies the makeup over his scar, Su tries explaining that there are different types of affection. Naturally, someone feels affection for another who helps them through a difficult time, but they’d be more inclined to call that person a friend. What she worries about, she claims, is that So might be confusing friendly affection for love.

So takes her hand as he tells her that he doesn’t differentiate between friendship and love—it’s all the same to him. He knows that she’s trying to push him away, but her tactics won’t work on him. As he says this, he grabs her around the waist, pulls her close, and begins to lean in for a kiss…

But Su quickly covers her mouth with her hand. Amused, he tells her not to worry, since he won’t try kissing her without her permission again. Thank goodness for small favors.

Jung finds Su on the palace grounds and explains that he was worried about Su when she went off with So, but she says they only went to see the sunrise. It was fun, even.

She tells him to try thinking of things from his brother’s perspective, since he was never able to receive their mother’s love. Jung just says that his mother and Yo have changed since So came into the palace, and sighs wistfully for the uncomplicated nature of the past. The days that Su spent her days smiling at Wook were their happiest, he claims, and Su agrees.

Wook meets with his mother and Princess Yeonhwa to announce his plans to request the king’s permission to marry Su. He doesn’t want the throne and wishes to live with Su in the Northern city of Hwangju. He may as well have slapped Yeonhwa in the face with the way she reacts, with her spitting that he’d just be leaving her and their mother without protection.

Surprisingly, Queen Sinjeong intervenes to give Wook her permission to follow his heart, though she warns him to be prepared. Once he leaves, Yeonhwa tears into her mother for not stopping him, even though the queen reasons that she’s tired of vying for the throne, and knows that Wook must be too.

Without Wook’s protection as king, Yeonhwa says, they’ll just be pushed out of the palace, or worse. That’s when Yeonhwa declares that she no longer intends to just live as the sister of a king—she’ll become the wife of one, and rule over him.

Queen Sinjeong is powerless to stop her as she goes straight to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong with a “story” to share. We don’t get to hear what it is, but this alliance is probably the last thing anyone needed.

Baek-ah’s heard a new dancer has arrived at the gibang, and goes to see the new girl for himself… only to recognize Woo-hee, the sword dancer from the forest. She grows suspicious when she recognizes him, though he claims he just comes to the gibang to play accompaniment for the gisaeng there.

She’s content to just shoo him away, but Baek-ah says that they should share names now that they’ve met three times. She claims her name is Bok-soon, but her attempt at secrecy is foiled when one of the other gisaeng immediately calls out, “Woo-hee-ya!” Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong and ninth prince Won meet with minister Park Young-gyu in order to ask his advice on how to separate the king from So. Minister Park says that they’ll have to make the king believe that So is Crown Prince Mu’s enemy, so all the queen needs to do is act like she supports So—he’ll handle the rest.

Won then claims he stole one of the crown prince’s secret documents and gave it to So, that way the crown prince will think So stole it. The queen believes all their preparations are going swimmingly.

Baek-ah pays a visit to So to ask him if it’s true that he took Su out of the palace—and if so, he wants to know what his half-brother is thinking. Since Su is a court lady, there could be severe ramifications for her if she’s caught, and Baek-ah doesn’t want So making things any harder on her.

So says that wasn’t his intention, and confesses that he’s not all that good at relating with others. But he has no intention of making things difficult for her, and when he says that, Baek-ah realizes that his feelings for Su are real. So claps a hand on Baek-ah’s shoulder as he says that he and Su are the only people he truly cares about.

They’re interrupted by Astronomer Choi bearing bad news for Crown Prince Mu—his mother’s family has been accused of embezzling tax money, so the ministers are calling for him to be deposed. The ministers instead want So to be installed as the new crown prince, since he’s been the nation’s hero after the rain ritual.

Ninth prince Won plays his part in the plot by claiming that all of this happened because he told So about the dealings of Mu’s unscrupulous uncle, making it seem as though So was the one who made that letter public. He acts completely innocent, leaving Crown Prince Mu to suspect So.

Seeking to nip this problem in the bud, King Taejo informs So that he’ll be sent back to Shinju. Despite the king knowing that Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s machinations are the reason that So’s name has been put in for the crown prince position, the only viable solution the king can think of is to send So away.

Princess Yeonhwa, in disguise, orders a court lady to deliver a vial of what’s probably poison to a very specific court lady. (Su, perhaps?) Though Yeonhwa warns the woman not to speak a word of this to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, it seems the court lady does just that.

So bursts into his mother’s room then to demand answers, though his mother only demurs, claiming that she was just trying to help him get the throne. Isn’t that what he said he wanted?

He tells her to stop pretending like she does anything for his sake, but his mother just smiles at him as she tells him that the crown prince will die from drinking poisoned tea on the ninth day of the ninth month—she’s already delivered the poison, so he can’t stop it now.

So begs to differ, but his mother practically laughs. Even if he tells someone that she delivered the poison, she’ll just claim she did it to make her son king.

“Try to stop it if you can,” she challenges. “But you’ll only be tightening the noose around your own neck.” She manages to stop him when she mentions how the king is trying to drive him out, but if the crown prince dies from poison, So will take his place. One measly court lady will die, and he’ll have everything he wants.

Understandably, So is wary of trusting her, though not wary enough. She bats her eyes at him and claims that she fully supports him and trusts him not to kill his brothers. Dramatic music tells us he’s considering her proposition. No, So! Don’t trust that witch!

Minister Park Young-gyu is called to the gibang to meet with Woo-hee, who pressures him about a rebellion. As the last princess of Baekje (one of the Three Kingdoms, which King Taejo unified into Goryeo), she wants to kill the king, and she threatens to tell the people of Baekje of his treachery should he fail to help her.

He reveals that he’s her uncle by marriage, and all but dares her to make him bend to her will. What power does she have? Woo-hee threatens him with her silver dagger, but when they spot Baek-ah nearby, she acts like a gisaeng fighting off a suitor trying to have his way with her. Her uncle plays along and stalks off.

Baek-ah seems to recognize the minister, but before he can connect the dots, he rushes over to ask Woo-hee if she’s okay. Bitterly, she says that if he was going to see what was happening and not rush in to save her, then he should’ve stuck with that choice. He says it didn’t look like she needed his help and dangles the norigae ornament she dropped in front of her, teasing that it doesn’t seem like she wants it back.

After Wook pays a visit to his late wife’s grave to ask her to watch over him and Su, he joins the royal family in an afternoon of games and general merriment (which so happens to take place on the ninth day of the ninth month). So focuses intently on the crown prince every time he seems about to drink.

The family plays a drinking game based around who can recite stanzas from a famous poem by Zhong Hui, and they motion to the next person who must drink and recite the next part of the poem. But when it’s Jung’s turn, he can’t remember it. Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong notices that Crown Prince Mu is reluctant to take a drink, which opens an opportunity for the poisoned tea to be delivered instead. The one part of the plan So wasn’t let in on, though, was that Su was to be the doomed court lady delivering the poisoned tea.

Tenth prince Eun and his new wife Soon-deok are late to the party, and end up running into Su as she’s on her way to deliver the tea. Eun’s a bit icy to Su, claiming that he doesn’t want to see her face if he can avoid it. After he storms off, Soon-deok asks Su why she didn’t just take her offer to become Eun’s second wife.

Su admires Soon-deok’s consideration for her husband, and bids her to take care of her husband. Soon-deok gets a little offended at Su’s specific advice, claiming that Eun is her responsibility now.

The tea Su brings to the crown prince is first tested for poison by a silver spoon, but before it arrives, So loses his nerve and prepares to tell the crown prince everything. But once he sees Su and realizes the predicament she’s in, he goes silent.

When he speaks again, he covers smoothly by saying that he’d like for his brother to pour three drinks for him. Princess Yeonhwa looks nervous as the clueless Su takes the tea to So, who then drops the cup. He claims he was just being clumsy, so Su is asked to pour him another, this time in a fresh (and hopefully poison-free) cup.

So drinks the first cup without incident, though he begins to falter before he can drink the second. He covers again, continuing his toast to the prince as he downs the second cup. As Su pours him a third, So sends a look to his decidedly unapologetic mother as he thinks, “It wasn’t the cup, but the tea you poisoned.”

She practically shrugs, leaving So to bear his pain in silence as he takes the third cup from Su and realizes that he’s drinking poison she poured for him. His hand shakes as he takes it, but his toast doesn’t falter. He looks at Su as he brings the cup to his lips, while Princess Yeonhwa looks ready to jump out of her seat.

Because of So’s toasts, the crown prince requests that the king not send him away to Shinju as planned. Su, still clueless, goes to prepare more tea, while So looks after her longingly and tries to control his shaking.

So excuses himself gracefully, but the world around him begins to blur as he starts walking away. All he can do is try to control the symptoms long enough to get out of sight, even as blood trickles from his clenched lips.

COMMENTS

Now that’s a noble sacrifice. I admit to being pretty disappointed in So for going along with his mother’s plan on any level, because he should know better by now than to trust her. And for a while there, it seemed like he really did know better, so the only reason I can think of for him to have let himself be fooled was that he truly does desire the throne.

What confuses me is how openly awful Queen Sinmyeongsunseong gets to be without any repercussions whatsoever. I’m honestly surprised that there’s a soul in the palace who isn’t aware of her machinations, which she may as well be announcing from the top of the palace roof, for all the subtlety involved. And yet, even with her explanations, her true motivations aren’t clear—specifically, with what she hoped to accomplish by letting So know about the poisoning. It was clear to us that she was manipulating him yet again, but to what end? I wouldn’t buy that she counted on So drinking the poison himself, but then again, I don’t buy a whole lot when it comes to her.

It’s at least worth noting that So might’ve stopped the poisoning himself by implicating his mother, though he had no choice but to switch tactics when Su arrived. He’s not entirely free of guilt since he tacitly agreed to the poisoning at first, but seeing the way he literally poisoned himself to save the woman he now loves helped erase any lingering feelings of doubt. The fact that he realized the irony in drinking the poison she poured him was doubly sad, because his sacrifice was twofold—and neither party he was saving had any idea that they were even being saved.

Maybe it’s just me being morbid at heart, but So’s sacrifice on Su’s behalf seemed a much more romantic gesture than his unapologetic steamrolling over her feelings from the start of the episode. Even though I do get the steamrolling to a degree, and understand that he’s just not adept at expressing his feelings. He wants so badly to have Su all to himself that he’s missing the essential aspects of actually wooing her, and thinks that if he can possess her, then the only person who’s ever shown him any real affection will stay by his side and continue to support him.

He has a certain amount of self-awareness to know that he’s not the best at being social, but that self-awareness only gets him so far. Although it was funny how clueless he was when Su told him that she liked someone else—enough to think that it was Baek-ah—it’s not so funny when he follows that question up with a threat to kill whoever it is that she likes. And, as he added, to deliberately not be sorry about saying that.

Su’s reactions would be in keeping with a woman who was actually from that time period, but this episode more than ever had me wondering where all of Su’s modern sensibilities went. Even if we take into account that she’s been living in Goryeo for a while and has grown accustomed to life there, her being a time traveler had absolutely zero impact on her actions this episode. It’s not even that I’d like her being from the future to play a bigger role, but it’d be helpful if she spoke up for herself once in a while. Telling So that she liked someone else was a step in the right direction, but then saying nothing to his threats to kill said person felt like we took three steps back. If she’s not afraid of him anymore, what’s preventing her from speaking in her own defense? Or from speaking much at all? I feel like we actually still know just as much about Su as we did starting out, which isn’t that much at all. Here’s hoping that our modern girl will find her voice sooner rather than later.

When Concubine Oh asked Su to leave the palace on a trip, I was so hoping that Su would say yes! Let's both get out of here, avoid this whole mess and confrontation and just spend quality time together....and then Su starts defending Wook and how they'll ride off into the sunset together......and my heart quite frankly just sank.....please wake up Su, the only way to protect everyone is a trip outside the palace... Someone asked what the point of Su being in the past is, and the way I see it she is the Catalyst for everything.....take Su out and so much of this stuff fizzles......if she doesnt serve the tea, she isnt framed, 4th Prince probably doesnt drink the tea, Wook and So arent trying to kill each other, there is no forced kisses and the sister doesnt desperately turn dark, etc,etc...a long vacation away from everyone would do Su a ton of good and maybe help her regain that modern perspective on things.....I feel cheated that I wont get to see that.....

Yeah, Su is the catalyst for everything, yes, it probably will be a good thing for her to take a vacation outside of the palace, or maybe she should simply said yes to Wook, and the two should leave the palace to live happily after. But everything will just end at ep 10 with no further story to tell. Exactly, because she is the origin of trouble, she is the center of the drama, no trouble, no drama, that is why she is the lead character. :)

I wonder, what makes her so adamant on staying in the palace? I get it, she trusted Wook's word, but is that it? If I were her, I would've followed Court Lady Oh to the countryside, and then later meet with Wook there and spend time with him outside the palace, far from other people's eyes.

Am I the only one who think the archery scene is funny? I mean, the bullseye is so big, no wonder Yo could hit his target all the time. And Wook must have been one hell of a lousy archer.

For me Soo did So as she remembered the threat So has declared by the beach, that he will kill whoever she has feelings for. And I might be wrong, but So seems to cringe at that moment and might realize later why she did so (which is to protect Wook)

That threat lacked conviction. I laughed, he was just being an ass and scaring her shitless for no reason. Not cool though.

I think it would have lacked conviction coming from someone who didn't have So's history. But at least it's clear why Su would believe it, considering she's seen him come home after killing, she believes he's destined to be the ruthless Gwangjong, and he'd just forcibly kissed her.

"i'm going to kill anyone not baek-ah if you like them" is the goryeo version of "girl, you better not cheat on me or imma break some heads".

so far wang so has no particular reason to dislike wook, but i can see wook working to earn so's hate. he was a bystander who smiled at so for a lot of interactions, and even took his part a time or two. now he's a storm cloud because his girl is wooed by his brother AND maybe because his brother is not the black sheep of the family anymore. maybe he was the indifferent brother because so was never in the cards to become king. now he can see the possibility, he's not prepared to let so come before him. i think soo is just a pretext to have a reason to act against so.

if so kills/breaks wook's legs, therefore, the evidence would point to jealousy, but it would actually be a battle for the throne, imho.

Just when it looked impossible and the drama may just settled between 5%-6%, there comes LJK who brought his tender and makes drama watching 1000x better. His fellow actors need to be schooled by him on how to achieve acting perfection. His acting is so phenomenal.

For this entire episode, I can't help but feel for So. I understand his reason for possessiveness. First of all, never once in his life did he ever felt love from ANYONE, and now that he is able to have it, why would he not be? My heart was torn into pieces when he kept smiling at Soo as he gives the hair pin and pouring his heart out to her, knowing that she likes another man. Of course telling her that he'll kill the man that she loves isn't exactly romantic, but despite that, I just want to go in there and hug him and give him all the love he deserves. We're already halfway into the series and still no development in SooSo's romance from Soo's part. Can I just say how angry I was when she said she was considering Wook's proposal? It's completely stupid of her to be able to fully trust him considering what she went through with her ex-boyfriend. He is a prince, he can't just simply leave his position and not get punished for it, I really hate how she thinks she is able to solve all of her problems by marrying Wook. And Wook, oh my god, this show promised us WANG SO AND HAE SOO, not Wang Wook and Hae Soo, they're not showing ANY flaws from him that will make him and Soo fall apart, and from the preview, it looks like he is there helping after all:/ His discreet anger was only triggered only because of Hae Soo and his newfound hatred for So. Now that his pursuit of the throne is out the window, what will he become now that will cause Soo to fall out of love with him? At this point making Soo fall DEEP DEEP in love with Wang Soo seems incredibly unrealistic and i'm not sure if I'll be able to enjoy it now. Call me a devil, but I found some sort of satisfaction when I saw Soo get punished after being accused of trying to kill the CP. The hatred building inside me just completely deteriorated and I felt bad that I even felt like that, but I can't help it when I just haven't been really able to stand her from the previous episodes. If only I could Blues Clues in there and help So through everything. I really hate it that it caused So to sacrifice and kill himself to be able to gain Soo affection, but what am I going to do? I guess i'll just have to deal with it

I think WookSoo ship is slowly dissolving. The drama itself kind of showed the foreshadowing part of it. With how Soo said to Lady Oh "he won't change as he doesn't want the throne" or something along the line, and him saying not wanting the throne to his mom and sis. But I think with how the next episode going to go, with Soo almost dying and all, and So perhaps helping her. We may see the transition in Wook from not wanting the throne, to wanting the throne, not for the sake of it but for Soo. Because time and time again we see how he wasn't able to do anything fast enough and was always one up by So in terms of action. And from the previous episodes he did take Soo's warning about Wang So quite seriously, so if So ended up wanting to go for the throne, Wook will probably battle him just based on Soo's premonition (similar to how it went in the C-version).

Although it can also be that Wook ended up wanting the throne because he finally realized that without it he will always be controlled and pressured by everything around him, external things that most of the time he thought was the reason he wasn't able to act fast enough to save Soo.
Either way I think the progression would show how Wook wants the throne and it may be a turn off for So, since she thought he wouldn't do that and she can assumes that it will change him.

With regards to SoSoo, I think it will all depends on Tuesday episode. I mean, we see that Wook is trying to help and gather evidence (as shown in the preview), but it was So who stood under the rain with her, thus she saw So not Wook and that may be the catalyst in her changing direction.

wook reacts, not acts. he likes to take his own sweet time to do anything. if he wants to help soo, he has to be faster, and he. is. not. fast. he'll fail.

so on the other hand is a do-first, think-later type. exhibit 1: the tea drinking scene. there could be more ways to get rid of the tea without implicating a foul reason for it - like brushing against the table and taking down the whole mess, lol, so that no one gets punished for anything but so, for being clumsy. but he's caught out there with thinking how his mother is preparing to sacrifice soo in order to get the CP, and maybe taking a chance to check if she really wouldn't react to him making that sacrifice.

so is the one i expect will do anything to save soo, even if it looks bad for him to do it. after all, he covered for her and took the poison to save her, didn't he? one could argue he was in it with her and only because it's her who served the poison did he interfere.

it's a golden opportunity for the queen to exile him and blacken his reputation even more. it all depends on how she takes it. if there's an ounce of motherly instinct in her, she'll let it slide. but i don't think she knows how to be a mom.

At this point, I feel like the main failing of the show isn't in the editing or the multiple versions, but in So's characterizations. All we know about her is that she is a makeup person and got cheated on in our era. We know nothing else about her. She has no context. Therefore, her actions seem random and unclear because we don't know where she's coming from. Contrast that with Su, who even when cruel or violent, has such a clear context that I can understand where he's coming from, even if I don't agree. I like IU, and I think she's done great, but even a much stronger actress couldn't do a whole lot with this character because this character isn't developed. She has no internal logic. She does what the story needs her to do, but without clear reason. In the beginning, I understood why she feel for Wook because he was kind and, let's face it, who wouldn't fall for Kang Hanuel if he looked at you like that. But now? Why does she still love him? It's not clear. Now it's just her reacting.

Without a clear sense of character, of why she does what she does, Su can't really grow, change, or even make sense. This show has been able to display a multilayered characterization for each of the princes--when it started, I had no idea how I would keep them straight in my mind, but it's easy now because even Won, the least clearly defined character, has enough characterization for me to see where he's coming from. It's a real shame that Su isn't given even that much. Imagine how amazing this could be if she was a fully developed character, with logical reactions (not logical in a Spock way, but logical given her background and context). I hope that comes up because, right now, I am not feeling her in the least.

I completely agree with you. I don't think it's the failure of the actress but failure to make the character of Soo understandable.

It feels like she hasn't learnt anything, hasn't grasped how little control she has over her life (and I mean that in the sense that she could be killed for the tiniest of infractions if she angered the wrong powerful person). Instead of being afraid of So, I want to see her (and therefore us) understand the political implications of her marrying Wook and why it is difficult. They leave out the important stuff, while giving us fluff but I can't believe in it because I know there are ramifications (and it's much more interesting if they tell us why and why not!).

I'm with you there - Su has basically been made to behave however the plot wants, rather than in a way that's consistent with internal character logic. Like her freaking out over So potentially being Gwangjong last episode- it makes zero sense that she'd be like that after a mere hallucination while being perfectly ok and in no way put off by seeing him in a violent rage after killing 30 people.

It's not IU's fault, since I doubt even Seo Hyun-jin could have saved such a messily written character. It's just a shame because this performance is going to be used to write her off as an actress when she's done much better in the past.

To be fair, she hasn't actually seen him killing anyone yet, with her own eyes. The assassin in the forest was killed by Wook.

She freaked out after the vision of So slaughtering Eun and his wife, laughing manically while he did it.

idk but the fact that it needs so much explanation and handwaving to justify Su's inconsistent reactions, points to poor writing for her character and in this case it's actively hobbling the actress.

agree with you Jannie. It's a different thing to hear that So assassinated 30 people (not to mention that they were traitors in Su mind, so So gets the justification). And from watching your friends getting slaughtered.

And from watching your friends getting slaughtered.

that should be, from imagining your friends getting slaughtered.

it's been established her history knowledge is shaky, since she knows about gwangjong but isn't even sure which one of taejo's sons is he. the only way her strong reaction to seeing so in that vision killing brothers can be justified is if she actually cares a lot about him, so her heart is breaking for him turning into darth vader.

but she adamantly repeated she likes wook and is just friends with so, therefore she shouldn't be flying off at that vision. for her, it should be like a slasher movie. instead she yells at the maybe-future-fratricide and calls him names, telling him to go away. not really smart.

if i were so, i'd think her intoxicated with something.

0

@shelly
your logic is flawless, except that one thing you missed from the calculation: that hae soo not only cares a lot about wang so as her friend, she cares a lot abot wang eun too. it would only be a slasher movie for you, if you see that a friend of you would kill another friend of you?

0

@taro: yet again, she doesn't actually SEE so killing eun, but imagining it. and that while she's not 100% certain so will become gwangjong.

yes it's a slasher movie based on nothing. i have no sympathy for her. why not imagine wook slaying eun and his wife? or jung? or the crown prince?

it doesn't make any sense for her to cast so as a villain and then act on her own imagination. no sense whatsoever.

0

Kang-Chul called, and he completely agrees with more context.

(I totally agree too. Shape up So!)

You've got a good point here. I seem to like her character a lot more than you. Compared to many other kdrama female characters, I love her! But we do not get a clear idea of her context because we have little history about her. We've delved into Wang So's past almost over much. She spent absolutely NO time missing anyone from the future aside from a few moments missing her mom. Did she have no friends besides her two betrayers? No family other than a mother she barely registers? I'm sort of glad they didn't prolong the doom and gloom of her re-location to the past, but we don't get too much of a sense of her

we get so much insight into her past that the her current actions are understandable - of course, only if we can accept that her job is not to be a typical kdrama heroine :)

Can we talk about the fact that So also referred to Baek Ah as his "person", as equally as So??? It just melted my heart, at least this ship is not ONE-SIDED. I can't wait to see Baek Ah royally stands by So's sides when all the princes are against him.

I don't think his response "Baek Ah?" when Soo said she already liked another person was just out of blue. It's just that Soo and Baek Ah are the only ones he cares about and wants to protect the most in this evil palace.

I'm kind of disappointed in Jung. He even couldn't get any sense when Soo asked him to understand that So didn't grow up with much love from his mother like he did. And when they whined over the "better past"... damn I was just so sad. As if they were blaming So for all the changes and all the bad was coming for them. I'm so done with these people.

my take is they initially bonded over being powerless spare princes (so had just returned from shinju and no one even wants him to remain home, baek-ah was never someone of consequence because of his family - his brothers don't hate him, but his praise so far was that he's loved by the ladies. definitely not competition for the throne).

the baek-ah saw so overcome his problems and stand up for himself - and soo, when asked, and became a little starry-eyed over his big brother. lol, i think baek-ah's love line with woo hee - aside from introducing the last princess of baekjee, someone also of no importance whatsoever in taejo's goryeo - is to not make it like baek-ah has a romantic crush on wang so (the vibes are there, even if it's a puppy crush/hero worship.)

i imagine them in real life, LJK and his hoobae, lol. if i were an actor and had the chance to learn something from LJK, i'd be dogging his every step.

You know as well acted as the tea drinking scene was...I was still livid at that whole scenario.
Why didn't So just look for a way to tip the whole teapot over after he broke the cup and before he even drank anything? Surely he could've made it look like an accident as well. It's just plain stupid to believe that only the cup was poisoned and not the tea itself. Argh.

I know I know otherwise we wouldn't have gotten So's sacrifice with cup two and three (which was noble but stupid as well because he's more or less committing suicide and Su's gonna be punished anyway coz well duh, she's poisoned a prince) and whatever drama that's going to follow in tomorrow's episode. Sigh, I just wanted a clever resolution for once.

Breaking the cup once is more than enough ... accidentally breaking the tea pot the second time, when you are about to toast to the crown prince, everyone would construe it as a snub to the king and the prince.

And how could he break the teapot? He was sitting way apart. Even later, she is serving him, the teapot is sitting cozily on the table .. He could break it but it would become obvious and suspicious ...

i actually thought they handed the scene very well and made it believable that he couldn't just smash things around without implicating his mother or HS

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think for him, while he kind of naively trusted what his mom said, it's also the fact that the tea (and any other food) served to the royal family is usually checked (as shown in the drama) and it's the norm there, so he must have think there's no way to do poisoned tea any other way without alerting the authority (not counting that the attendant who test the food for the royal family was also in on the plan)
By the time he realized that it was indeed possible to poison the Crown Prince other than through the tea cup, it was too late and he already drank the first cup of three.
If he was to stop or accidentally break the tea pot or something, it can be seen as a sign of disrespect to the CP, which can drive him further away from the King, CP and the palace.

I'm not at all surprised So went roughshod over Su's will at the start of the episode/threatened to kill her lover (though lol@him thinking it was Baek-ah, looks like he REALLY doesn't get the difference between friendship and love). He's quite capable of taking drastic action like that and nor thinking it's wrong, like killing the horse he rode in from Shinju on. BUT the one positive is that at least he did regret what he did, even if he says the opposite, and then follows that up later by declaring he won't kiss her without permission again. And in a weird way, it looks like they're back to being friends?

As for Su, I'm glad the episode had her be brutally frank with So about why she couldn't love him, or that she thought he was confusing friendship and goodwill for love. Not thrilled at her staying silent in the face of him issuing a death threat to the one she did love but I can see how that might be her not wanting to go into the issue more, or risk revealing Wook's identity. And I like that she tries to restore equilibrium to their relationship/the situation in general, whether it's by telling So they're just friends or by telling Jung to be nicer to his brother (yay for more of Ji-soo, now in less cutesy mode please). BUT for all of that, I don't get why she's so desperately naive about Wook being able to keep his promise to marry her, and refusing to leave the palace with Court Lady Oh.

The story tension is growing up. But until this episode, indecision Soo's heart to choose is still unanswered. But I believe that Soo will be more open her heart to the prince So.

The other also interesting is when a lady Oh told to Soo about the man she loved that turned out to be a king. Initially, he was just a merchant who then promised to marry her but it was forgotten because of the power and the throne. Lady Oh also had said that Soo bring great changes to Prince So. I hope it could be a consideration for Soo, to whom her heart will be moored.
However, Prince So is a normal guy who wants to be loved ....
And it's true that the story of each episode of the series is unpredictable. always makes curious ....

Does anyone know how old Su is? Am wondering because I'm not sure how a 21st century woman sometimes seems to be one of the not-so-smart characters on the show. I don't imagine palace intrigue to be too different from corporate politics (rough comparison). Oh, she has her talents, so I'm not calling her dumb by any means...but she's not particularly savvy. It's surprising cause she seemed sort of intuitive when she knew Wook's sister didn't like her at their first meeting...the character seems so uneven. She was really sassy in the beginning, even towards Wang So, but it's odd that she's less sassy now. Is this her new sense of maturity? If so, it bites.

If the sources I read are correct, Go Ha-jin is supposed to be 25 years old, while Hae Su is 16.

As for the intelligence of Hae Su, it's important to remember that she had minimal knowledge of the Goryeo era besides a few tidbits here and there before she time-travelled. After learning more about the differences between Goryeo and the modern time I guess she tried her best to fit in. Though I am let down that she didn't speak up...

Read somewhere that IU said the 12th episode (originally the 11th) will be full of goodies.

Watched the SBS version streaming and then continued with the international version so I hope I got the meaning of the scenes right.

Thoughts:
- At some point of this episode, I can't help but thinking this show is slowly evolving into imaginary biography of Gwangjong (lol). More than his likability as a possible suitor of Hae Soo, they always favor his character improvement more. It's weird, but from narrative pov I like what they did, how they pushed him into the king he will be. (Again, thanks to LJK for delivering it wonderfully).

- Soo, will you come back to your past self? Like Wang So, I think you have become too docile lately.

- Finally, Wookie! I hope to see a changed person so that KHN can show greater length of character without being so OOC in this show.

- The dramatic poison drinking scene, like everyone said. It was superb! I was like having these goosebumps all over my back when WS drank the tea cup by cup. Eyes, expressions, acting, duh!

WAITING FOR TONIGHT EPISODE..

Hi Headsno2 !

Thanks for the recap!

I don't think So agreed with the Queen's plan to poison the Crown Prince whatsoever . I think he actually was trying to stop the poisoning without giving away the culprit.

We've already seen in earlier episodes that when So makes a decision he actually acts on it (The killing of the monks), I don't think he would've hesitated if he had decided to plot alongside the Queen B*tch.

My opinion on this matter is reinforced by So himself when he explained to Su that contrary to the general opinion of almost everybody on the drama, he doesn't kills animals or people carelessly. As we witnessed in this episode (when he took Su away from the palace), So is a man of action, if he'd wanted the Crown Prince dead, then he himself would act on it.

That said, I love the bromance that's developed between Baek Ah and Wang So :), is kind of cute.

or maybe they used some poison that can't be easily traced. i hope it's why it doesn't kill so - maybe they used a less powerful thing, or a smaller dose, therefore he can recuperate faster and not be absent from the screen.

without wang so in it, the drama folds in itself. they're lucky LJK decided he'll do his all, no matter how bad the directing/editing/music/some of the cast/the plot turn out to be.

he's an actor, through and through. he has no self-consciousness in scenes, doesn't get thrown from them when the other actors don't respond at the same level, he's completely submerged in the character.

in "the king and the clown" he had the same level of submersion - i remember watching it and falling in love with his character. but then he had the great help of the more experienced actors in the movie - kam woo-sung and jun ji-young, and even kang sung-yeon - that movie was a whole experience.

when the cast acts together, they can do wonders even if the script isn't helping. but it's painful watching some of them coming and going from work instead of acting, and see someone like LJK pour his heart out onscreen, and noting the difference, wondering what could have been.

maybe LJK should make more movies, instead. movie actors are a whole different bunch...

Thanks for the recap Heads! I only have one question for this episode: why did it have to take so long for all this political intrigue to ACTUALLY happen???

If there was enough of this to begin with the story would have advanced so much better. I would go on about this, about how they could have possibly intertwined the plots on Mu's life with interspersing footage of So/Su/Wook but I'd like to talk about So more.

I was kind of hmmthatdoesnotsoundgoodinanywayatall when he said he wasn't going to apologise for the forced kiss and the it-might-cause-Su-her-life trip out of the palace. Then I sort of got it--this man has never been loved, and has never loved in his entire life. Please don't think I'm excusing his behaviour as okay (it's not, it's actually quite atrocious) but it's just extremely sad how no matter what he does, even when it's from the bottom of his heart, it always comes out so pathetic next to what the refined and cultured Wook can place in front of Su. It's the same with how we view So, I feel, that he should be the type of guy that we envision as the lead, kind of like Wook but cooler, but he can't. He just can't be that guy. He's not the main lead that we're expecting--he says it himself, even--he's the kind of man that's been raised on killing wolves and burning down his best friend tree, the kind that can't express his feelings because he doesn't know how to deal with them. It's so sad for So that his love for Su has become this burgeoning fear she wants not to deal with ever, and he can't quite see why either. I don't know how they can change that, not when she's already so busy trying to convince herself that she'll be happier with Wook and he can't see the way to a better method of loving.

Speaking of Wook, I found it amazing that he was so hyper-self-aware of how different he and So are, and not in a good way either. When he was telling Su that all he did was worry while So swooped her out of the palace--it was really good self-introspection. But true to Wook being Wook, his major plan is to plead for Su's hand and hope that somehow Taejo magically grants it. I don't get it, he's so intelligent and yet he can't bear to bring himself to formulate a plan that will surefire get Su out of the palace? Is it that hard to bring himself to Taejo's feet and promise not to get in Mu's way? That's the best method at the moment if anybody wants to curry favour with Taejo. The way Wook is trying to cut ties but not all ties with the palace is kind of getting on my nerves. Okay, he says he doesn't want to be king, so why doesn't he make it clear to Taejo that he won't be a threat? The fact that he keeps holding back makes me not have SLS anymore, despite him being very swoony a few episodes back.

Mu: this guy cannot catch a break. Everybody wants him dead, while only Taejo really wants him alive. I felt so sorry for him this episode, because literally everyone and their mums were plotting to poison him. It took 10 episodes for the show to finally do this, but at least we know that Won is conniving and evil and we should never trust him, ever. I hope Mu finds that out soon too. I really couldn't bear to blame him for being so cold to So, because he did trust So, I feel, more so than any of his other brothers. Even if he didn't completely believe that So wanted the throne, I'd allow Mu the space to feel disappointed. The only kind of support he has is Taejo, and Taejo is probably going off to the other side soon. Please love So more, he took three cups of poison for you!

Yeonhwa has more ambition and guts than Wook, but girl, this is why you'll never get So's love--because you totally helped to poison him. And tried to make Su the scapegoat that he scapegoated for, so like... yeah no pity for her. Won is slimy and smarmy and dude why are you trying to poison the brother who's so nice to you? Speaking of nice brothers, THANK YOU LORD for the wonderful bromance that is So/Baek Ah. Legit cried when So told him that only "Baek Ah and Su are my people". Yes, love each other more please. You two are the best.

Su... I don't really want to say anything about her, except that she keeps getting excellent advice (from Ji-mong last episode, Court Lady Oh this) and keeps ignoring everything. H-how? I understand that she needs to be this way because she's the one who puts every single point of history into place, but how can you listen to great advice and then think, no I want to do it my way? I really, really empathise with her wanting to keep everyone safe, especially the person she thinks she loves at the moment, but the fact that she has to reassure herself that she will be happy with Wook in Hwangju just already says it all, doesn't it? If you need to repeat a mantra to yourself, you don't believe in it. I need to see how the show cleans this mess up.

And omg the appearances of Park Yeong-gyu and Park Sul-hui!!!! Still holding out for Wang Gyu though.

+1 agree with your thoughts!

I want more of a bromance between Mu/So, but I understand that probably to Mu, So is somewhat tainted by his association to his mother (also the assassination of the monks protecting his mother would have exposed that connection). The CP has so little power that while I feel like he wants to have So on his side, he can't trust him completely.

I love the bromance. I really want a So/Jung bromance even though I know that never happened in the original. Jung is really frustrating me with his simple view of the things. Somehow it makes him a bit thick, he's so simplistic and innocent. It feels weird am I supposed to believe that for all the time before So arrived he never noticed his mother and brother plotting?

Soo is totally frustrating me, to the point that I just don't understand the character. Why doesn't she listen to Court Lady Oh? Why does she keep ignoring everything. I just want to shake her and yell 'wake up! You are in the nation's hotbed of politics, why do you think it's a simple thing to marry a prince. Why aren't you making any attempt to understand the underbelly of this place!'.

I really want a So/Jung bromance too, not least because Lee Jun-ki and Ji-soo killed it in that one scene where it was just the two of them. But it looks like Jung is closer to Wook at this point, which makes me nervous for future alliances.

Also I can believe Jung didn't notice much of his mother and brother's plotting before. His reaction to the "family dinner" murder plot feat. So indicates as much, since up to this point he's basically been treated as the baby of the family and just went on his merry way doing whatever he liked.

It's only natural that Jung is closer to Wook. He is the brother who has been around him. He seems level-headed, calm, and intelligent. So, on the other hand, is the black sheep of the family, and Jung hasn't had much exposure to him. I like that Jung is seeing how his mother and Yo truly are and how different So is from them. It would be awesome if he grows to like So and sides with him in the future.

I'm loving the So/BA bromance. At least one of the brothers is a real brother and friend to him.

0

I'm not saying that Jung being closer to Wook isn't easy to understand - it's completely natural, and of all the older brothers it makes sense that gentle, refined Wook is the one to whom Jung would turn (as you said, So is his full brother but he literally never knew him before since So was already in Shinju by the time he was born) .

But we do have the beginnings of Jung starting to see that So is treated really badly by his mother and brother, and I was hoping we'd see a greater rapport between So and Jung in the future as Jung grows out of his "mommy is right" mentality. That may not happen if Wook and So end up set against each other and Jung sides with the brother he's always known and regarded as best.

0

So true--I really feel for Mu, who's surrounded by people that all have the same blood as he does, but harbour ulterior motives when coming closer to him. He definitely feels for So, Mu, but you're right--the association with his no. 1 wannabe killer Queen SMSS is just too much for Mu not to have any sort of suspicion at all. Which is so sad, they could have been the best bromantic brothers!

Jung, like @pogo said, has been mollycoddled to the highest order, so given that he knows nothing of the evils of the world, I'd find it likely that he would have been blind to the machinations of Queen SMSS and Yo. I actually felt that his reaction to So quite organic--that he would blame So for ruining the fantasy of his perfect world. So is making him grow up, and while Jung does, the shell of his childhood world (all fun and games) is falling apart around him, and who would like that? It's good characterisation on Jung's part.

Though I wouldn't say the same for Su, yeaaaa. It's so weird how she's insistent on Wook not changing (based on what? He was so nice to Lady Hae then he met you) and fixated on her friends dying, while not understanding that if she doesn't listen to the advice of people well-versed in political intrigue, other people will die? Like, people WILL die. Is this her modern sensibility at play, that she thinks people will just end up in prison at the most? Ok she goes there next episode, so let's see how that rolls.

@kumoiwa- re: Jung- exactly! Literally everything we've seen from him indicates that he's a naive but essentially good-hearted boy who's been kept that way by (ironically enough) his mother's babying - which in its turn kept him from witnessing most of her scheming or being influenced by her and Yo's plots. And the other older brothers (Wook, Yo) pretty much dismiss him as a kid too. Which leaves him seeking adventure outside the palace, and that's pretty much the only outlet he has.

It also makes sense that he has conflicted feelings about So - on one hand, So's return upsets the known order of Jung's world, not least because he's been given the old So-is-bad-luck line, but on the other, seeing So in person does show Jung that Mommy Dearest was wrong and that there's more to his previously unknown 4th brother than he thought.

So, so true. I feel like Jung has the most growing up to do, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's painful for him to see his beloved mother's true colours, which is causing him to shaft the blame onto So atm, but hopefully it also opens his eyes to the reality of the the palace--pretty much everybody dies if the wrong person gets the throne.

So I hope he gets to make the right choice, that even if he doesn't get his bromance with So, he still manages to do what is right because it's within his moral compass to actually do it.

0

I love your interpretations of these characters! Makes a lot of sense now! I'm also so annoyed that Hae Soo is ignoring advice from Court Lady Oh and Ji Mong. If she did nothing, she wouldn't plant the doubt of So in Wook's heart. The brothers would not tear themselves apart.

I feel like she's trying to change history so much she made history click in place. Well I guess that's the point of the drama anyway, cus history can't be changed. In the Chinese drama, the exact same thing happenned and Rouxi (chinese version of hae soo) and she regretted it so much that she fell ill and had a miscarriage.

I'm a little eh at her constantly ignoring advice, but I also assume that all of this has to happen for history to run its proper course.

The central theme for the original BBJX was that history doesn't change for anyone, and that Ruoxi had propagated her own tragedy by wanting to reverse the fate of the 8th Prince. I do hope they keep this, because it's what is the most attractive about the premise I think.

I get that people generally tend to ignore advice and do things their own way, but given that more than one person has told her to let it go, I'd assume that Su would give more thought as to why Ji-mong and Court Lady Oh were telling her the same things.

These aren't just random strangers giving her advice either--Ji-mong is Taejo's most trusted subject, and Court Lady Oh is Taejo's lover. They know how palace intrigue works. Su has been a court lady for what, half a year? A year? And she's still convinced that she'll be able to marry Wook with no major problems. Given the precarious state she's in, with all the future visions and everything, it's logical to want and take good advice to heart, but like, I have no idea. Maybe it's just human, like you said, to want and figure stuff out for yourself.

They have so much materials to work with and they haven't even scratch the surface until now. This is such an intriguing piece of history and I wish they would've left it alone as background story for the royal family so maybe we'd understand them more or even care about them.

Wang Wu would have been more interesting with a little bit of background info. What qualifies him to sit on the throne beside being the oldest etc, etc...
He has no personality here and he is just the typical pitiful crown prince who is trying to stay alive.
If they make him full of himself then so be it. He was a war hero unlike his younger brothers.
If they make him the king's favorite then so be it, he was Taejo's pride and joy. Even if he is real jerk to his brothers, at least he is doing something. Maybe Hae-soo would teach him a thing or two from the future.
(I thought Kangxi's relationship with his sons was interesting. Where is our wise king? Jo Min Ki is just like his old character from SFD. He might as well just do a cameo here).

Ok I'm done whining.

"And omg the appearances of Park Yeong-gyu and Park Sul-hui!!!!"

- the look WS gives when the crown prince looks away when he is being exiled. he felt betrayed. he is so disappointed. don't you ever learn WS

- I'll say it again. i don't think the death threat was serious. he threatens everyone. all the bloody time. the only time he kills is when he doesn't threaten. So if he is threatening you, you are very very safe

- the way WS kept looking at HS when she was walking away in the last scene. thats the face he wanted to remember

- the bromance!!!

- Basically everything WS. I think its pretty obvious now that this is not HS's story like the original. And i don't think its by design, given the screen time. its basically LJK stealing everyone's scenes from under their noses

Thanks for the recap, Heads!

Ah!! This ep was sooooo good cuz of LJG!! My heart breaks for So every ep!! This guy just can't get a break!! He doesn't know how to express his feelings to the one he loves, so he just forces his affections on her. His mom hates him and would not hesitate to use him and dispose of him in a heartbeat. His dad is so fickle and just a different direction of the wind will cause him to send his son away. His brothers for the most part don't care for him and would sacrifice him without even blinking an eye... I just want So to get some love... It's sad that he can only trust in Su and BA, and I hope those two will never betray him in any way.

The poison scene!! OMG!! I have to keep replaying that since it was so sad and heart-wrenching with every cup of tea that So downed... Those emotion-filled glances to his mom and to Su... *beats chest* It was like being stabbed by a knife upon discovering that the tea was poisoned instead of the cup... And the irony that Su was handing him the cup... It shows how far he's willing to go to protect the one he loves while bearing all the pain himself... =((( I hope Su will find out somehow how much So has done for her and see his sincere heart. As for the mom, while it did seem like she was shocked at the beginning and might even be a bit regretful, once she saw that So had no intention of stopping, she was pretty much just enjoying the show. Gah... How can a mother be like this?!

Wook is doing nothing for me these days... The thing that bothers me is how passive he is. Even Jung is better than him in taking action!! Well, if Wook just sits there and do nothing every time, then don't complain when So is taking the initiative in everything, especially when it comes to Su. At least he's not afraid to make his feelings clear. I know Wook is gonna go up against So for Su's heart, but it seems like his hesitation and over-thinking will ultimately cost him. I have no doubt So will relentlessly pursue Su's heart and prove his sincerity and steadfastness no matter who or what is trying to stop him or hurt Su. And THAT activeness instead of passivity is what's gonna move Su.

So happy to see so much Jung in this ep, both cute and serious! XD

Anticipating the next ep!! I just wanna catch So as he tumbles down from the poison... =((( LJG, thanks for rocking this role with all your micro expressions of emotions!!

Agreed on Wook - he's maddeningly passive. I mean, if your dangerous, rumoured-insane brother kidnaps your lover, the proper course of action is not 'wait and see'!

otoh I was happy to see more of Jung too, especially in serious!mode. Whether he's kicking back against Wook dismissing him as a child (and I thought it was sweet that Wook apologised, since Jung clearly looks up to him) or that scene with Su where she tells him he got all the motherly love So never did. Like if we have to spend time with any Princes who aren't So and Wook, I don't mind if it's Jung and Baek-ah.

i can definitely see wook sitting there looking at soo and thinking "i'm gonna stay here for a bit and consider aaaaall the implications of loving you up and maybe having a child or two with you. don't wait up."

that's how slow to act he's been. maybe it should be good he thinks - a lot - before acting - but all chances of actually doing something when the time's ripe are passing him by. he should be made minister of planning or something, he'd do great.

lmao that wedding night scenario, you are so wrong for that but I'm dying of laughter anyway.

The saddest thing about Su and Wook's relationship imo, is that it's become a prime example of how poor writing can actually kill/cool off even inferno-level chemistry. Like they've been neutered into this chastely emotional couple and now I just get annoyed because it goes so hard against IU and Kang Ha-neul's strengths.

I'm thinking the writing is trying to make Wook change his mind about vying for the throne. He's gotta blame it on something... So, it's probably gonna be Su doesn't marry Wook, Su goes to So instead (maybe because of how he will likely protect her against the king and everyone else who wants her dead whilst Wook remains passive/hesitant/afraid), and he figured if he is king, he can steal Su back later, or worst yet, just order her to stay with him.

Yes! Loved both scenes, the way he didn't back down just cuz hyungnim told him to go back, and how he listened to Su's explanation. Yes!! More Jung-BA please!! Eun, Won, and Yo can take a snooze somewhere. Mu, I don't mind so much.

Lemme gather my thoughts or something...

Brother #3, we get it you're a bad dude. Why are you trying to recruit? And Wook of all people? Wook, please don't become evil you're my favorite! You gave me all the feels over a freaking flip book! A FLIP BOOK. Like, who does that??? Please Wookie! Hehe, wookie...
*imagines Kan Ha Neul in a Chewbacca costume* ... *uncontrollable fit of laughter*

I hope his next drama makes him the romantic lead, if only for the sake of my sanity.

And WTF with the unholiest of alliances between Queen Mommy DearestX1000 and sadistic little Princess Incest Pants???
I'm betting both know making Su an unknowing party in the poisoning would be a major blow to So as well as Wook

And of course that ending... Aw, ok I like you now So. I was mad after last week, but you made up for it. Now you just have to not die... Erm... Good luck with that...

I do agree with Heads that Su's (what was her other name?) modern-isms have taken a backseat-like back of a school bus backseat. Were they meant as just fish out of water comedy moments? If so, I think the drama is doing itself a disservice as well us, it's viewers. I want Su to be a more proactive and outspoken heroine again. It's why both princes fell for her, because she acted so out of the norm of Goreyo. Now, it feels like she's just falling in line with everyone else. I hope something shakes her out of that and soon. But with an imminent death sentence approaching, we'll just have to unfortunately, wait and see.

First, I really wish they just cut of Wang Eun all together because it really does nothing to the drama. It doesn't add on it and it wouldn't be a loss to cut it anyway. But I guess you have to put it because if they actually went with the novel (or C-version, I forgot), the only one that ended up living happily is Wang Eun. So yeah. Sucks, but hopefully our leads get happy ending they deserve especially Wang So.
I quite enjoyed 13th prince (Wang Jung) character progression. It's slow and gradual from a brat, to somewhat young adult trying to be mature but still lacking.
What I noticed from the C-version and this version is the different take on it, in which the C focused more with politics and power struggle with romance sprinkled in, while with K is the opposite, it's romance that h90as power struggle sprinkled in. Though I wish they do the romance part a bit better, especially for SoSoo, and BaekAh-WooHee. The later part I'm hoping to see more of since if the rebellion that WooHee was planning took place, she will play more vital role in the drama then we initially thought.
With HaeSoo, I'm not quite sure whether it's IU's fault since her skills are not up par yet, or just the script, but HaeSoo is a bit lacking. Though I kind of get why she's acting this way. We have to remember that before she time traveled she was actually cheated on by her boyfriend and best friend, so I guess while she already trusted So and the others, and getting comfortable in Goryeo, the visions kind of bring back paranoia that was caused because she was cheated on, that there's no one she can really trust. And this shows, like when Wook proposed to her, if she really did love him and trust him completely, even if she's afraid for his safety her first line of thought should be 'I love him, but I'm afraid for his safety, how to keep him safe?' that sort of thing, but here we actually see that she's trying to convince herself that she can trust him and she wouldn't be betrayed like she was before (with her boyfriend) and like she was going to be (with Wang So, at least according to her vision).
Of course, this could be just me over analyzing it.
But seriously, do the writers intentionally put small details for them to be subtle or is it just bad editing and they actually left out few details?

I have different opinion about So going with her mother s plan. I don't think he s on with the plan but just contemplating the consequences. If he had told the cp or king earlier, as said earlier, they will send him back to shinju without hesitation. At this point ws's worst fear is losing hs. During the ceremony, he decided to speak up cause in the end he cant let cp die anyway. But hs came in bringing the tea stopped him. I donno if imiss the part whether evil queen told him the poison is in the cup or tea, but he gambled and try both ways to test where is the poison. I will love to thjnk this way cause this even magnified the sacrifice he put for hs. Those things aside, i have not seen a poisoned murder scene as good as this. And his longing eyes bading farewell to hs is touching. I hope this scene between 2 versions is the same.

thank you for the recap.

i think evil queen plot this time aimed at mu and so. queen obviously dont care much about yeon hwa's story about wook and soo. she still consider wook a potential rival for yo. if wook goes away, one more rival she have to get rid off.

she secretly allows yeon hwa plan to poisoned mu and told so about it. if mu ended up poisoned, she wins, if so stopped it, so will be accused of plotting the poison himself, like she said, she even have signed documents to back it up. to her surprise, so drank the poison, she still wins. a thorn in her plan for her other sons to be king gone. no matter what she wins

i dont beleive so even for a second support the queen's plan. it's just he doesnt know how to stop the plan. so only have himself in the palace. he cant just go to the king and cp advising them of the poison without proof. he has every intention to stop cp to drink the poison, that's why he kept an eye on cp cup. he broke the cup on purpose, thinking he avoided the plan without anyone realising it was poisoned, only to realise somehow the poisoned tea passed the test and he drank it.

i dont know what hurt more for him, the poison or the fact his mother smiled knowing he drank the poison.

Is it too much to ask for if I just want So to be with Baek Ah? We're at the midway point and I don't see myself warming up to the idea of Su and So anytime soon.

I also think it's partly because the drama is moving a little too slowly for my taste. A lot of things have happened, but they all seem a little random and don't serve to move the plot in any particular direction. The most important thing that's happened in the past ten episodes is that we get to see LJK's other eye. I'm not sure how the plot is going to develop in order to give us the removal of Mu, the transfer of Su's feelings from Wook to So, the wedding of Yeonhwa and So (?), the death of the King/establishment of the new King, the fallout among the brothers, etc. etc. I might get whiplash if things start to move at a breakneck speed...

Also I came across a video made by a Chinese uploader, and it somehow makes me feel more feels for So and Eun than So and Su ever did....

(FYI the video starts at 5:21)

Just want to add, it was quite interesting to know how the Chinese viewed MLSHR in comparison to the popularity of their BBJX. Though that video was quite critical of MLSHR, the program host did give jun-ki a very fair assessment of his performance. He said that jun-ki's expressive eyes in the very first episode had him hooked onto the drama. He went on to described all the scenes jun-ki delivered great acting - his interaction with Su at the bathing place, when he first greeted his mom in the palace, when he killed the monks at the temple. The host concluded that jun-ki added style and class to drama when he appeared on the screen.

Kudos to LJK! Though the Chinese do not have high opinion of MLSHR, they give very positive endorsement to Jun-ki's superb acting skills! Daebak!!!!

the two princes have so much different style in loving Hae Soo.
Forbid me to say that Prince Wook is all talks no action. He talks very delicately, very reassuringly, and all he can do is promise. Not until that he sees Su with So that he decides to marry her. So is it a proposal based purely on love or just rivalry?
So, on the other hand, takes all the necessary actions need to help Su several times.
I don't know about you Hae Su, and I know girls like guys who can talk sweet, but you have to open your eyes.

Wang So is a great character, flaws and all. Whatever the faults in editing and pacing, the writers have done an incredible job fleshing out such a complex, complicated and lived-in character.

Would I want a guy in real life to steamroll over me like he does Su? No. But considering his life story, the Goryeo norms and context, and the brutality of court politics, his behavior makes total sense - his act-first-think-later, go-getting mindset, his hoarding and protectiveness of people like Su and Baek-Ah who have shown him kindness, and yes, even his unapologetic attitude towards the liberties he has demanded of Su.

This may be an unpopular opinion, and I understand why others may think differently, but I'm glad So declared he wouldn't apologize for kissing Su, dragging her out of the palace and uttering death threats against the man she loves. I prefer this version of Wang So versus a Wang So with modern day sensibilities.

And of course it helps that LJK is playing him to perfection. Hard to tell when the actor ends and the character begins.

I don't think Su lost her modern sensibilities. She did try to "educate" So that there is a difference between being someone's friend and lover. That is a modern concept, especially to So, who thinks of attention/affections from a girl as love. And she did tell So that he likes someone else. Su is not speaking her mind as much as she did before but that can be because she is aware of her "neighborhood" more than before. Also, she is a court lady now as opposed to being the prince's in-law. Lady Oh also has been training her on how to behave in the palace.

yeah i agree with you, but i would also like to see her modern free and fun self when she's alone with 4th prince :( she was a little playful when she walked by 13th prince (i think) which was cute :)

Actually, that is the 14th prince, Jung. The 13th prince is Baek ah.

I don't know if this was commented on but I was so sad with Jung's response. When Su gently rebuked him to be more understanding of his hyung, So, who had never received love. And he responded with, well you need to work at being loved to receive it. Says the youngest who never had to work at being loved and coddled by his mother.

Does he not understand a mother's love should be unconditional?

It just made the differences between Jung and Baek ah so glaring.

"It just made the differences between Jung and Baek ah so glaring."

That is in their relationship with So. Is it too much to ask Jung to be understanding of his brother So?!

It's amazing how Baek Ah understands So better when he is only a half-brother, yet So's own brothers dislike him/keep him at a distance. There is the saying, "Blood is thicker than water" but sometimes, it's not true. So's loyalty to the crown prince is also an example.

Things are getting darker in the story; so we may not see Su smiling a lot from now on :(

14th prince, Jung :)

I'd rather not they (the production team) try to romantacize So's lack of social skills, post kiss scene. I like that he's dark and does shady things, he's not supposed to be a textbook gentleman afterall (he's a really nice foil to Wook if anything), but the show should own up to So's moral grayness. Instead the show itself tries to candy coat and bypass that entire sticky dilema with romantic music and locale. I don't get that, there is a helluva discrepancy between the writing and the directing. The writing is trying to set up basically a huge character study of So and how he eventually transforms into his notorious future self, but the directing is kind of stuck behind rose-colored filters and the end product is a little confusing and jarring at times.
Dont get me wrong, i love this show and i would fight a thousand petty Yeon-hwa's in its defense but sometimes i'm not sure what they're thinking.
Also, why didnt they shoot a scene of Su panicking when she got her period in Goryeo? Or what she did without toothpaste and a toothbrush? Like Heads' says, Su seems to be losing her modern sensibilities-but small details like those would've been really solid. Its a shame what details are left out in the name of telling a story. I miss fiesty Su, bring her back! (Can i offer Eun, Yeon-hwa, won, and that sleazy minister in exchange? Its not like they're crucial to the story.)

now i get it! the 21st century sensibilities a.k.a. what to do if u have brush ur teeth, etc.... I was confused by everyone's complaints and now i understand. Its true that in most time travelling American movies (just love watching those), the funny parts are watching the modern girl/guy's shock at olden stuff/attitude as well as utensils.
But i don't recall these points elaborated in the C-version. Besides, like someone mentioned, Soo tries so hard to adapt. She said she was a fast learner.
Sorry, should have posted this as a new comment.

I don't think the recap mentioned this, and it's about Court Lady Oh. After Wook told his mother and Yeonhwa that he wanted to leave the palace with Soo, Yeonhwa got pissed at her mom and mentioned that she was blamed for a Court Lady's miscarriage whom the King dearly loved.

Does anyone think she was talking about Court Lady Oh? Was she impregnated by him 10 years ago? I would really want to know more about this because I think Court Lady Oh is foreshadowing Soo's life.

Maybe Soo will carry So's child and have a miscarriage! This happened in the Chinese drama too!

The scene after Su put the magic cream wherein Wang So try to kiss her & then Su immediately covered her mouth made me laugh.
I find it cute though.?

On Wang So, how many steps can he make that he think he can hide what Su intend to serve to the CP and what he actually drank was poisoned.
I think he wanted to endure & leave the place immediately before the poison kick in inside his system. He also want to protect Su especially that she doesnt know what crime she has done.

If Wang So dies, then Su will be punished to death, then can they be reincarnated in the future & be together?

But I want to watch more Wang So? I'll hold on to the thought that Wang So can survive death. But at that era, is there a thing called antidote?

The last scene was amazing but my favorite is any scene with our leads. Too bad they waste the ocean scene while Su still doesn't like So yet. I been thinking how So's feeling for Su has been very consistent to being friends and then having feelings for her. Yet all the while he talk and treat her the same.

I wish the drama would make her feelings consistent also that way when she does fall for him it's gradual. But so far, looks like she might fall for him out of pity..which Im prayING really hard is not the case. Please somebody tell me this isn't so in the other versions.

Oh my... at the end of every episode I'm just like "Oh my..."

First off, I feel that Su refused to go with Wook and Jung to return to the palace to try and cover who she "prefers" to be with so as to not put Wook in So's crosshairs.

I agree that Su's "modern-ness" isn't very apparent anymore. Like before when she would scold Eun and actually cause injury to his head. But maybe by this point of being in Goryeo, all of her past mistakes has put her "in her place" as every action she took in the past has led to unfavorable situations time and time again. Even when she is not super boisterous she is being put in these situations.

Also can someone help me understand why Prince Won is all of a sudden working with Queen Yoo? I mean Yeonhwa did say that the other families would try and push them out...but does that implicate Won's family? It felt like it was completely out of nowhere especially since we never saw ill intention from him before to any particular party.

I don't know if it was a difference in translations, but I thought what Yeonhwa meant by ascending (after Wook said he would marry Su and leave the palace) was that she would become something greater than a king, not necessarily just be a ruler over her brother. Like I guess I can understand her part in wanting to kill of the Crown Prince but I don't see how that helps her agenda at all. I actually don't fully understand her agenda at this point.

I think Won's key characteristic is that he's self-preserving and self-serving. Like it's been hinted a few times that his drive in his actions are basically anything that benefits him. So far the show has also portrayed him to be somewhat sleazy and not very high on the morale grounds, like how in the last episode, he told Eun he couldn't tell apart his first and second wife. So it's not completely out of character that he would side with the most powerful figure in the court, probably just to protect himself? But I kinda wish the execution was done better and they could've foreshadowed this more a couple of times. But then again he's like a supporting character so we can't really expect too much.

As to Yeon Hwa, I watched the YouKu version with Chinese subs, and what I got from it is that she wants to be the figure manipulating and controlling the king from behind, much like Queen SimyeongSomething.

I roll my eyes whenever I see Wook. I'm sorry but I just can't get over the fact that he is a disgusting pig who cheated on his wife and pretends like he "love" her. No matter how sweet he is to Hae Soo, I can't help but hate the couple. He cheated then have the nerve to get upset when Hae Soo is with So. Hypocrite. I just hate him. I don't understand Hae Soo either, Wook is as disgusting of a half man as her ex who cheated on her, yet she did the exact same thing to her "cousin". This shameless couple makes me cringe everytime I see them.

The Eun scene was sad...I felt sad, the joy that lit up his face when he saw Su, and then the light just went out, as he came back to reality. IU acted pretty well....the wide-eyed expression has given way to more depth - there was desperation and sadness in her eyes as she looked at Wook in the encounter at dawn.... her eyes nailed it, the hint of tears, as she held on grimly to the pretence that all was well....it made me sad. A solid episode.

With all the praises for LJK (not complaining cause I am his fangirl as well), I think we forgot to credit KHN. He is so good in this episode. The scene where caught So and Haesoo returning to the palace really showed his outstanding acting. The dark, dangerous side of him suddenly comes to the surface and you can tell it just from the look on his face.
Alas, I can't blame that LJK getting the lion share of the credits since he is so dominant what's with that acting prowess, everyone just fall back into shadows around him.

I still can't understand that scene where So took the poisonous tea from Soo's hand and he thought "I'm drinking the poison you've poured me." along with the hurtful expression.

At first I thought that he thought Soo was in the poisoning plot, but it didn't make sense.

Anybody can help me?

A commenter put a nice explanation on So drinking the poisoned tea in page 1 of the comments, you should check that out.
In regards to his line of thought, I think after he realised that he has to drink the tea no matter the consequences, he just found it ironic that he was trying to save Soo, but he's going to die "because" of her.
I don't think specifically he was blaming her, it's just the line of thought where he found the situation ironic.

The fact that he drank the tea she poured means that he may die and she’s going to be punished. He knows it. Maybe that’s why he’s looking like that – that he knows she’s going to be punished and there’s no way he can avert that, because the crown prince comes first, and he wishes he could spare her from whatever that is coming. And the fact that she’s innocent and clueless, and just a pawn, and he can’t do anything about it. And he was saying goodbye to her in his own way, memorising her face as he seals his fate of probable imminent death.

But if he suspects her, then it’s a different ball game – that face could mean hurt and betrayal; “You of all people, Su? I trusted you, I love you.”

Coming in the middle of the episode to say- OH MY GOD. How did I not realize till this moment, 10 episodes in in both, that Bang Ja Young in Jealousy Incarnate and Queen Yoo in Scarlet Heart are the same person?!? I nearly had a meltdown when Queen Yoo gave on of Ja Young's typical smiles.
