KBS in talks to extend Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
by javabeans
(Did I just hear a chorus of “Noooooooooo”s when you all read that headline? Followed by gnashing of teeth and angry mouse-clicking?)
Cheerful, youth-driven romance sageuk Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is dramaland’s latest breakout hit, and it’s a show that delights me every episode so I’m thrilled to see it getting a lot of love. So it surprises me not one bit to hear that KBS, its broadcaster, is eager to capitalize on that and extend the series by 2 episodes, although the production seems a lot more wary about proceeding than the station.
What’s rather amusing is the confused jumble of news that spilled out today regarding the potential extension, with KBS kicking things off by announcing that it had been confirmed. The drama’s producers were swift to deny those reports, and released a statement saying that while the good reception gave rise to some extension talk, there have been no concrete or official talks about it amongst the cast, writer, or producers. The show stated that it was not a decision to be made lightly and promised to do their best on the rest of the series, bolstered by the love being sent their way by viewers and fans.
So that’s where we stand currently: Extension talks in the works, but nothing confirmed.
I half-expected an extension to be part of the plan when I saw that Moonlight Drawn By Clouds was slated to be an 18-episode series; we’ve had dramas at that length before, but it does seem like the perfect way to build in the possibility of an extension without committing to one. And then when the show blew up in its second week, jumping from its 8.3% premiere to 16%, and then jumping to 19.3% in its third week, it seemed likelier than ever.
Despite my blanket wariness of extensions, Moonlight is still fairly early into its run, having only aired six episodes, so this is one of the better-case scenarios: At least there’s plenty of time to work in an extension without (knock on wood) dragging the story down with sudden last-minute filler plots and extra scenes. I admit that at this early, giddy, excitement-filled stage, I’m amenable to the idea of seeing more of these adorable kiddos and their fantastic chemistry and hilarious facial expressions. By the time week 10 rolls around, though, I may just wish they’d bowed out earlier, riding a high. But that’s always the trick, isn’t it? Creating an addicting drama isn’t nearly as hard as knowing when to go out strong, it seems.

They better not to do this!!! I know I'd love to see more of Yeong and Ra On, but I don't think it's a good decision since I've never seen or heard that episodes extension gave a more better storyline to any drama. Seriously, KBS SHOULD STOP messing with their shows!
I think a couple of episodes showing BTS and interview will be more better than extension.

I would sacrifice that one extra week not seeing Bogum/Yoo-Jung be cute so the story and plot would hold up. Sorry to say, but most of the popular dramas that had extensions suffered with the pacing and just looked off (looking at you OHYA). Plus everyone else gets overworked so quality is compromised. I don't want this to happen to my puppies!

It's cause we've been scarred by these "extensions" so much, we physically reject them. ?

Just hope KBS has some sense and uses the two ep extension for two BTS episodes. They could also do one BTS ep and one post show cast special similar to the one School 2013 did and also like what tvN's Taxi did for the Misaeng cast. Hopefully the cast will be available. I'd honestly much rather see unreleased BTS and a cast special than a good drama becoming bloated. And please God no recap episodes passing themselves off as a special eps.

Guys do you remember the times when we wished Moonlight wouldn't fail too much because of Moon lovers?

Yes! haha! I was expecting Moon Lovers to start with around 10% and go higher. I wanted just decent numbers for Bogummy. The ratings so far of MDBC are insane! Starting off with a decent number, doubling in the second week and 3x more than Moon Lovers by the third week... totally unexpected.

I think 18 episodes for this drama is enough, especially because we know that the skinship will be very minimal (because of the actress's age). I wouldn't want this show to start dragging.
On another note, and reading about this show's rise in ratings, so is it safe to say that "Uncontrollably Fond" and "Scarlet Heart" are the flops of the year 2016?

I won't go around calling Scarlet Heart a flop just yet. It's still early and Moonlight is clearly a very strong competitor. Ratings aside, it's still fairly well received.
Uncontrallably Fond, on the hand, is such a mess, and can officially be written off as the biggest flop of the year. Preproduction my arse.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo is actually pretty good, although I have to admit that Moonlight is better. I think it's just unfortunate that they're in the same time slot and competing for ratings.

come on... it just 5 episode of ML, saved the flop observation for later,
someone will reply about youku streaming number and the amount of comment to counter the flop argument.
then we will bring back the lackluster opening week into discussion, just let it finished 1st before judge.
It already heated enough in the ML page,
for UF, if we go by the hype as the next DOTS, you can call it flop but as general drama, it's okay... not bad.

I agree that it is too early to say how both dramas will be until the end. MDBC is doing extremely well, but we are only in 6th episode. ML, on the other hand, has very dismal numbers, but it's a 24-episode drama, so let's wait and see if it will rise.

I know it's early but I don't see what the pre-produced Scarlet Heart can do at this point to get the rating in their favor.
Internet popularity does not equal domestic success which is based on tv ratings in Korea.

I agree with @The Other Kiara on this. The general Korean public didn't even give it a chance in their debut week because of all the prejudice, and I don't think that will change it anytime soon. But I don't consider it like the biggest flop of 2016 though, the ratings are disappointing but the show is proving to garner a solid fan following, it may not be the best but it certainly is not the worst.

Personally i dont thk either of them were a flop.
I didnt watch UF but i chked and the ratings avg btwn 8 and 9 %. Thats technically not so bad- but the ouch came from KBS overpromoting it and calling it the next DOTS. So that kind of backfire.
ML is still in early stages and the ratings are really low. The antis took me by surprise. And its hard to hazard whats going in the minds of Korean household. But ML is doin very well on internet views, averaging 1 million per episode and also alot of international fans. So i wouldnt call that a flop either. Time will tell if domestically the ratings can improve once theres more focus on Lee Joong Ki's Wang So ascending the throne.

I love PBG but even the PD seems not too thrilled about this idea. I'm willing to have less PBG if it means a better ending, cause how a show ends is very crucial to me, as I need good closure.
I hope those fat cats at KBS knows this is not the smartest move! Do a bts, special episode or something. Just don't drag the plot!!

I'm liking the current pace. So, unless they can extend without making stupid additions to the plot or character development, I'm OK with an extension. Otherwise, let's just leave things as is.

I'm really glad that the production is hesitant about it. But I do want them to make a decision soon because if there is going to be an extension, better to add it now than later.
I think this is why I sometimes want the kdramas to be pre-produced. Extensions usually ruin the pacing of the drama for me.

Obviously that is the only acceptable answer as we all see how our beloved dramas getting dragged by extension. The results are all bloody and not pretty. And we are already approaching the angsty part of the drama. Watching the 2 leads being miserable for 2 extra hours, nah~ As much as I want to see more of our 4 leads, I rather have a separate epilogue episodes or after the show interview (??) like school 2013.

Augh, no. It'd be one thing if we spent longer on the cute or expanded some secondary story lines, but extensions seem to have three basic settings: Angst Doldrums; Surprise! Tragic Illness; and Meddling Outside Forces (ft. Noble Idiocy). And I get why it happens, tbh. It must be practically impossible to rejigger hours of plot and characterization, usually during liveshoot, and manage more than inoffensive padding at best. Which is why NETWORKS SHOULD STOP DOING THIS.
This is my crack show right now, but if the extension goes through, I may just stop watching until it's finished airing and reassess then. I have been to this particular rodeo too many times.

I feel like no matter how good the drama is, extending the episodes won't make it better...they should keep everything like how it was, so the drama can keep track of its storyline.

With the way the plot is developing, I think 18 episodes feel like there'll be some dragging already. I honestly love the cast, but I skip most of the evil-plan meeting of Yoonsung's grandfather. And the princess's loveline. I truly hope there'll be no extension.

Suddenly I am remembering when I heard that a drama I was enjoying was going to get an extension, I was soooo happy. That is no longer the case. However, in this case there is enough time, but I would actually prefer some vignettes to some of the great supporting characters or a behind the scenes episode.

You know what is funny? When I saw MDBC is 18 episodes, I was like "If their rating is bad, they will get cut to 16 episodes." When I heard their rating had a big jump, I was like, "Please don't extend it to 20 episodes. Let alone 2 episodes specials of BTS and other stuff."
But KBS did that! Again... If UF was successful, I guess we would get the BTS, making process, etc.

wow KBS greedy much? They can potentially harmed a great drama that's moving nicely in pace thus far. So either they drag it out or they inject a needless angst to fill in 2 additional episodes?? Even the best of production mostly suffers from extension. Personally i though the extension did more harm than good to the story and pace in AOHY who was in the same place- good ratings and lots of fans.

Keep it at the original episode number please. The dramas will have more impact that way. Just add BTS extensions like the one they did for DOTS.

Frankly, usually extensions aren't all that bad. This drama I think could do fine with an extension and suffer very little. If there are any fillers, make them super sappy and romantic and I won't mind.

For me they should extend the episodes for Moonlight. As long they don't put too much angst at the ending.
