Dramabeans Podcast #34

New podcast! Today things are a bit shorter than they’ve been in recent editions, partly because we didn’t wait as long to let dramas pile up on our plate, and partly because we had some technical difficulties that we didn’t catch until we finished recording, which led to us having to cut a bit of discussion out. We’d originally included Fantastic and Drinking Solo in the podcast, but sadly it was not to be — though we’ll be sure to talk about them next time!

So here’s what we’ve got today…

Podcast #34

Running time: 49:18

Topics and dramas discussed:

  • W: What we thought of the ending, the world, the writing, and the drama as a whole
  • Cinderella and the Four Knights: The tone, the cast, what we find cute and enjoyable and what we find lacking (10:00)
  • Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: What’s good about it, what’s bad, the problematic directing, and what we dearly wish were better (19:12)
  • Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Why this show makes us happy and what works for it (32:48)
  • Jealousy Incarnate: They cute relationships, the petty jealousies, and the sitcom feel (41:30)

I really enjoyed this podcast, and was happy to see it so soon after the last. Thanks for that ladies :).

I appreciated the comment about W opening the doors for more "interesting" drama concepts. In the end, W was so disappointing for me, but yes, what a ride and what a concept! I think many Kdramas have interesting concepts, there are a lot of fantasy and sci-fi concepts that I am drawn to, but I suppose there are so many more of the barely tweaked, played-out stories because those have been successful.

Yes on the silliness but sweetness of Cinderella. I'm so glad she couldn't tell the difference between alcohol and milk because that yielded my favorite scene in the entire series.

I am a little sad about the grand, sweeping, and generally agreed upon criticism of MLSHR. Another example of all our differences being what makes the world go round. A month ago I was watching 5 dramas. By this week I narrowed it down to this one. It's the one I wish were on every night! I agree much of the pop music seems very ill-placed. My fav example of this was in the first ep when 4th prince comes menacingly galloping in on a horse and grabs Hae Soo while what sounds like Korean Back Street Boys are playing. But other than that, the costumes, the characters, and especially the story, I love it all! I don't mind the close ups, and I somehow didn't even notice them until they were pointed out! The crazy thing is I actually just stopped Moon Lovers because it hasn't kept me intrigued. Of course Park Bo Gum and the other fellows are amazing (I actually think Jin Young is the prettiest fellow in there!), but I don't love Kim You Jung's acting. I noticed too and thought the way she spoke with a lower voice was great, but I felt otherwise she was lacking, a bit flat and simple, and I got tired of her. How did none of the characters in MLSHR make me feel that way?! I mean I see and have read that everyone agrees that a lot of that acting is bad, but I'm just watching happily. My happy viewer bubble has a hole now since I follow the comments and critiques, but I will somehow manage to keep it floating and enjoy the show for myself. Because why not!

I did wonder about "the look," though, too, haha!! I interpreted as there was no "look" and it was just So being overly self-conscious, sensitive, and attuned to Su's every move. Silly me, I should have blamed the acting. But it worked for me to interpret it that way!
