Uncontrollably Fond: Episode 16

With time growing short and, it grows harder and harder for Joon-young to pretend that nothing is wrong. He’s determined to struggle alone, refusing to accept help, even though it’s making things more difficult than they need to be. But as much as he’d like to keep his secret as long as possible, the decision may soon be out of his hands.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

In a series of clips, we see—and hear—Joon-young talking to the cameras mounted in his house. He speaks as though to Eul, saying that he dreamed of her all week, and wonders if she would dream of him, too. Later he says that he doesn’t have a lot of time and asks Eul to stop playing hard to get.

Another time he talks to the camera in his living room, and tells Eul that he just got back from the doctor. Things have gotten worse, so he doesn’t have much time to spend with her. He admits that he’s scared he’ll die before he has a chance to tell her how much he loves her.

Now Eul watches the videos closely, picking out what Joon-young is saying by reading his lips. The last message stuns her, and when her coworkers complains that there’s no audio, she breathes, “I hear everything. I can hear him clearly.”

Meanwhile, Joon-young forces Jung-eun to speak to Ji-tae’s mother on the phone, and listens as she tells the woman that she’s giving up on Ji-tae. When he hears that, he turns back and kisses her.

On the other end of the line, Ji-tae tells his mother that he’s not here to give in to his mother — he’s here to declare war. He’ll follow her as far as she wants to take this. Her look of betrayal doesn’t sway him.

A while later, Jung-eun washes her face in Joon-young’s restroom, now having second thoughts and wanting to take back her words about giving up on Ji-tae. Instead, she approaches Joon-young and raises a hand to slap him, although he stops her. He tells her to take off her engagement ring the next time they kiss, because he’s not nice or strong enough to welcome a woman wearing another man’s ring.

Gook-young lets himself in and gapes to see Jung-eun there — he only knows her as the project leader of Joon-young’s movie. Joon-young tells Gook-young to drive Jung-eun home, ignoring his questions about whether something happened between them. Gook-young yells that if anything happened, that makes Joon-young nothing but a beast.

Eul takes a taxi to Joon-young’s house, and nervously tries to ring the doorbell. In the driveway Gook-young gets slapped for trying to take Jung-eun’s keys, but he promises that he’ll forget everything he saw and heard today, so she allows him to drive her.

Eul sees Jung-eun being chauffeured off the premises, and she hesitates. She remembers driving once with Joon-young, when he’d asked her if she hates seeing him that much. She’d said yes and told him to get lost, and he’d agreed to disappear from her sight forever, but only after three or four months.

As Eul cries outside his door, Joon-young gazes out the window and draws a little cartoon picture of Eul in a patch of his breath.

In the morning, an increasingly desperate Haru resorts to chants and talismans to try to coerce Jik to like her back. The housekeeper stops her from actually eating the talisman, ha, but Haru just goes back to her chants, and celebrates when she gets a text from Jik.

He asks her to meet, to apologize for ignoring her messages. Haru plays it cool, saying that she had plenty of guys to entertain her, but it backfires on her when Jik takes it as a rejection. She backpedals and says there’s no one else, and she’s single-minded when she likes someone.

She gulps nervously, and Jik backs up, assuming she’s about to plant another kiss on him, hee. She assures him that won’t happen, and he makes her promise there will be no skinship until he graduates high school. Well, maybe hugs on special days. And he wants to meet her parents to get their permission and date for real. Aw, he’s such a little man.

Haru whines that it’s old-fashioned, but Jik is serious, and he wants to do this right until he’s an adult. Haru isn’t happy about the “no kissing” rule, but she agrees when Jik says that holding hands is okay.

He takes her hand to reassure her that it’s no worse than a handshake, but his heart starts to pound. He says that maybe they can’t hold hands either, which just makes Haru stomp and pout even more. So cute, these two.

Joon-young sleeps until early afternoon, and wakes up looking like hell. Doctor Kang calls to tell him that Eul came by his office today, and suddenly Joon-young is wide awake. The doctor says that Eul knows he’s sick, and we see that Eul took the news stoically, only betraying emotion when the doctor confirmed that Joon-young is dying.

Joon-young goes downstairs to find Eul making herself at home, and he reminds her that they’re over. She agrees that they were, but now that she thinks about it, it doesn’t really benefit her to end things now. She asks Joon-young to let her continue working for him on the documentary, and she swears she won’t even care if he dates someone else.

She nearly slips with, “Just let me be near…” but stops and corrects herself. She says that producing his documentary is a huge feather in her professional cap, but she wants to go further, and it’s not worth giving up for a mere ten million won.

But Joon-young denies her request, and tells her not to be so clingy. He gives her one minute to leave, and walks away.

Ji-tae is raked over the coals by one of KJ Group’s bigwigs for having no filial piety and trying to dismiss his own mother. He’s ordered to rescind his request, but he holds strong and refuses.

As he bends to pick his scattered papers off the floor, Jung-eun approaches and tells him to give up. He just removes her shoe from his papers and continues, so she tries to get a rise out of him by saying that she’s falling for Joon-young. She admits that she never thought she could have feelings for anyone else, and that it surprises her too.

She asks Ji-tae to hold onto her and prevent her from going to Joon-young. But Ji-tae says coldly that he already gave her his answer.

Jung-eun visits Ji-tae’s mother next, and attempts to talk about her statement that she’s giving up on Ji-tae. But his mom bulldozes right over her as if she never heard a thing, and gives her an expensive, difficult-to-buy handbag.

She eventually acknowledges what Jung-eun said about Ji-tae, and starts to fawn over her and ask her to forgive Ji-tae. Something about that offends Jung-eun, and she says again that she’s seeing someone else.

Mom sweetly tells her to just break it off, and even offers to do it for her, like she did once before. Wait, has she been chasing off any suitors that weren’t Ji-tae? Seriously, this witch.

Assemblyman Choi is still reeling at the news that Joon-young’s mother was never married as she claimed. Recent information confirms Joon-young’s birthday, and the math adds up.

Choi finds himself in front of Joon-young’s home, and remembers when teenage Joon-young told him that he wanted to be a prosecutor. Joon-young had grown quiet when Assemblyman Choi said that his parents must be proud of him, which now seems to mean more than he realized back then.

Ji-tae pulls up while Choi is still standing there, and he asks his father why he’s here. Assemblyman Choi says that his department is organizing a Hallyu event, so he’s here to ask Joon-young to sing a few songs. Ji-tae thinks it odd that he’s doing this in person, but Choi stammers that he’s just catering to Joon-young’s famous pride.

Not fooled one bit, Ji-tae asks his father if he was crying. Choi lies that he has dry eyes, but Ji-tae just asks how much he knows about his relationship with Joon-young. Choi clings to his lie and says that he doesn’t know what Ji-tae is talking about, and Ji-tae backpedals, saying he was mistaken.

He tells his father to go talk to Joon-young and he’ll come back later, but Choi stops him, and asks Ji-tae how much he knows. Ji-tae simply says that he knows as much as his father knows.

Assemblyman Choi ends up leaving first, though he’s so distracted that he nearly hits a group of pedestrians with his car. Ji-tae stands outside Joon-young’s home, thinking about the moment that he pulled up and saw his father here, wiping tears from his eyes.

Ji-tae finally approaches Joon-young, and the two sit to talk. Ji-tae notes that Joon-young didn’t seem surprised to see him, and asks flat-out when Joon-young will be dying. Wow, really?

Joon-young smirks and asks Ji-tae if he wants him gone, and Ji-tae says that yes, he does. Really?? Joon-young tells him that lifespan depends on the patient’s willpower, and apologizes since he doesn’t plan to die any time soon. He says that there’s still a lot he has to do, and a lot he wants to do, so he’s hanging on to life as best he can.

Ji-tae tells Joon-young to leave the revenge to him—he’ll be the one to carry it out on behalf or Joon-young or Eul. He tells Joon-young to die in peace and stop using Jung-eun to make things messier. Then he can be remembered as the pitiful and beautiful star.

Joon-young almost looks tempted, but his eyes harden and he starts to retort. But Ji-tae interrupts, and says that Joon-young’s father considered Jung-eun his daughter-in-law, so he should stop being a jerk to her and just die quietly. He issues this last warning, and stands to leave.

Joon-young calls after him, his voice rising to a scream, “Why do you keep saying that? I won’t die!!” Provoked now, Joon-young angrily empties his entire medicine cabinet onto the counter. But a call from Man-ok alerting him that Eul is at Mom’s restaurant stops him.

Mom feeds Eul, who eats so hungrily she nearly chokes on the food. Mom asks if Joon-young is that mean to Eul, and Eul doesn’t even bother denying it. Ajusshi notes that Eul is just like Mom — when she’s upset, she stuffs her face, ha.

Eul asks Mom why Joon-young is such a jerk anyway, and goes on and on about how selfish he is, and rude, and how he holds a grudge forever. Mom bristles at Eul badmouthing her son, but Eul is all, That’s right, and I’m just getting started.

Mom says that maybe Eul should just find someone else, but Eul pouts that there’s nobody else. Mom points around the restaurant, and Man-ok claims the other worker so Eul brightly asks Ajusshi if he wants to date her. Ha.

After Eul finishes her meal, she and Mom step outside to speak privately. Mom reminds Eul that she said she was going to break up with Joon-young, and asks why she’s clinging to him instead. Eul doesn’t answer, but instead asks for a hug.

She reaches out and hugs Mom first, ignoring her initial struggle, and asks her to just stay like this for a while. It’s sadly reminiscent of Eul and Joon-young’s hug by the river, only now Eul is the one who needs it. She asks Mom to tell her to stay strong—and no matter what happens, Mom shouldn’t cry too much, either. Okay, but now I’m crying. Mom scoffs and tries to push Eul off again, but Eul just hugs her tighter.

Joon-young pulls up in time to see Eul hugging his mother right there on the street. He freezes, unable to move at the sight.

Jung-eun stands on a rooftop overlooking the city, thinking everything over. She recalls how Joon-young told her to take off her engagement ring before seeing him again, while a billboard plays Joon-young’s concert serenade to Eul, and pronounces his documentary a message of hope for those facing death.

The next time Joon-young sits to record for the documentary, he tells the camera that the first item on his bucket list is to bring the girl he’s dating into the camera shot right now, and be proud. The official story is still that he and actress Kim Yuna are dating, but he says that that’s not who he’s talking about, outing the president for making up the story. Gook-young asks if he means Eul, and Joon-young denies it. Gook-young then snarkily asks if it’s Jung-eun—and Joon-young confirms it, to everyone’s shock.

Just then, Eul’s cheerful voice interrupts: She’s here to help. Joon-young’s eyes flicker just a moment before that cold expression slams down again… and then everything goes blurry.

Joon-young clutches his head in pain for just a moment, struggling to control himself in front of everyone. His face twists in agony as Eul and President Namgoong argue over whether she should be here, and the moment he’s under control he stands and says they’re done for the day.

He tells everyone to leave, and Eul seems to notice that something isn’t right. President Namgoong blames Eul for making Joon-young want to quit filming, but Gook-young kindly asks if Eul is okay. It’s interesting how he’s suddenly her biggest supporter. Gook-young is fed up for real this time, and he tells President Namgoong that he’d rather eat rocks than continue to be Joon-young’s manager.

Joon-young stumbles to his bathroom for his medicine, fighting nausea and dizziness. He gets a pill down, but collapses in the hallway, unconscious.

Eul finds him lying there and sits with him, fighting back her tears. She stays with him, wiping the sweat from his face, until he wakes just enough to roll his eyes up to her.

She tells him that she almost called for an ambulance, but she didn’t want rumors to spread.

Joon-young pushes himself to a sitting position, and he throws Eul’s phone angrily when she starts to call Doctor Kang. He screams at her to leave, but she just calmly urges him to get treatment.

Unable to make Eul leave, Joon-young starts to walk away, but Eul stops him. She asks if he’s refusing treatment because he’s afraid people will find out he’s sick. She says the words out loud: “You’re dying.”

She tells him again to go to the hospital, but he just grabs her hand and pulls her outside. Desperate, she threatens to tell everyone if he keeps refusing treatment, but he pushes her out the gate, tells her to do whatever she wants, and slams the door in her face.

He goes inside and sinks to the floor, choking back tears.

Ji-tae runs into Assemblyman Choi coming home late that night, and sadly asks his father never to leave his mother, no matter what. Choi easily promises, and asks for a promise in return — that Ji-tae will never abandon his mother, no matter what. But Ji-tae can’t make that promise, and says that that’s why he asked for his father’s promise first.

Jung-eun is at the Choi home for dinner, and Haru pulls her aside to talk about boys. She asks if it isn’t normal for a a man to want to kiss and hold hands with the girl he likes, and Jung-eun says that it is. Haru asks about Jung-eun and Ji-tae’s first kiss, but Assemblyman Choi and Ji-tae’s arrival saves Jung-eun from having to answer.

Ji-tae is unhappy to see Jung-eun here, and complains that they should have told him. Jung-eun says that she has something to tell the family, and she pushes off Mom’s hand when she tries to pull her away. Jung-eun goes to Ji-tae and gives him her engagement ring, saying that they should call it quits now.

She turns to Assemblyman Choi and tells him that she’s seeing someone else. She states that her debt to him (for helping her in the hit and run) has been paid back by her father, and tells him not to use that to hold her back.

She tells Ji-tae’s mother that she left behind the fancy handbag she’d given her, adding that she’s perfectly capable of buying herself such luxuries. Assemblyman Choi asks who she’s seeing, but we don’t see her answer him.

Over at Na-ri’s place, Eul is doing her best to hide in a blanket cocoon, and Jik asks Na-ri if he can hold her hand, then grabs her in a hug, then touches her face, checking his heartbeat. He leans over and kisses her cheek, and Na-ri decides he’s gone bonkers.

Jik clinically reports that he doesn’t feel a thing, so he wonders why his heart explodes when he so much as touches Haru. Eul suddenly bolts upright and starts talking about jerks, and HA, both Jik and Na-ri point questioningly to him. Eul dashes out, leaving Na-ri and Jik utterly confused.

Joon-young calls Gook-young when he can’t find Pororo, and Gook-young accuses him of making up an excuse to call him. He reminds Joon-young that he rehomed Pororo a while back, and Joon-young is confused for a minute before he remembers. Okay, that’s worrisome.

Eul shows up and pounds loudly on the gate, demanding to be let in. When he doesn’t respond, she calls loudly that she knows he’s pushing her away, afraid she’ll be hurt when he’s gone. She yells that that won’t help anything, because they were never madly in love, and they never understood each other.

Joon-young’s chin wobbles when Eul cries out that her not wanting to see him romantically was all a lie. She says that she likes him, that she loves him, and she can’t stand one more minute without him. She beats on the door, begging him to let her in.

Her words shake him to the core, and he starts to walk towards the gate. But an alert on his phone just then reminds him that the statute of limitations is up in only thirteen days, then Gook-young calls.

Gook-young has called back to say that even though Joon-young is a big star, he shouldn’t flirt with just anyone and break a poor girl’s heart. He says that if Joon-young does that, he’ll suffer in hell for it.

Confused, Joon-young asks Gook-young what statute of limitations is up in thirteen days. Oh no. He doesn’t remember what the alert means, or having put it on his phone. But Gook-young has no idea what he’s talking about, either.

Eul pounds on the gate until her hand is bruised, but Joon-young doesn’t open up. Jung-eun pulls up and the two women exchange loaded glares, then Jung-eun walks past Eul to ring the doorbell.

Joon-young hears the bell and goes to the door, expecting to see Eul on the other side. Instead it’s Jung-eun, who holds up her hand to show him that she’s no longer wearing her engagement ring. She steps into his arms, and Joon-young looks confused, almost as if he doesn’t know who she is.

Then over her shoulder, Joon-young sees Eul step out from behind the gate.

COMMENTS

That was painful to watch. It’s one thing to see Joon-young in pain, but something else entirely to see him losing large chunks of his memory. He looked so lost and befuddled, but the scariest part is that when he starts losing his memories, he’ll start losing himself in the process. It’s our memories that make us who we are, and without them, Joon-young will slowly fade away.

Just when I thought Ji-tae’s mother couldn’t get any worse, she goes and gets way, way worse. Apparently Jung-eun’s fixation on Ji-tae isn’t all self-propelled — from that little comment of Mom’s (when she offered to get rid of Jung-eun’s new fling, “like before”), it sounded like she’s experienced in chasing away any man who shows interest in Jung-eun. This shows a level of commitment and obsession with the match of Jung-eun and Ji-tae that’s been years in the making, and it’s frankly chilling. Neither of them ever had a shot at finding love for themselves, with Mom making damn sure that they never even had any other options. It’s amazing that Ji-tae was able to hang out with Eul as long as he did, and resisted the brainwashing that Jung-eun’s fell into.

I’m feeling more magnanimous towards Assemblyman Choi these days, though I’ll admit that it’s largely to do with his current lovelorn situation. He seems deeply shaken to know that he may have a son he never knew about, and there’s a large part of me that still wants him to turn out to be a good man. He’s a loving father and husband, but his attitudes towards the poor are problematic at best. I hold out hope that his reconnection with Joon-young’s mother, and his realization that Joon-young is his son, can turn him around on that score.

Ji-tae is really frustrating me lately, because I just wish so badly that he’d chosen a different path. If he had been able to forgive Joon-young for Eul’s loving him, the two men could have worked together to get Eul the revenge she deserves. I watch Ji-tae and Joon-young’s scenes together and it’s like I can see an alternate scene, where the two are at least on the same side, and taking down the Choi family together. But Ji-tae can’t let it go, and his anger and resentment are causing him to push everyone away. I just wish he’d gone in a different direction, and been a help to Joon-young rather than repeatedly telling him to just go die already so Ji-tae can do things his way.

I think that Suzy’s acting has improved measurably during the course of this drama, and for me, she’s gone from tolerable to actually better than decent. I still wouldn’t call her a good actress, but she’s serving the character well and getting better with each episode, it seems. In part I believe that’s because the role of Eul hasn’t been particularly challenging — she’s a rather one-note character to begin with — which makes it easier for an actress of Suzy’s level to maintain throughout the course of a show. But to Suzy’s credit I can absolutely see that Eul has more spark in her eye, more confidence in her voice, and more maturity overall than she did before. I like how she’s turned the tables and decided to stay near Joon-young whether he likes it or not, now that she knows the truth.

On the other hand, Woo-bin has been and continues to absolutely master the role of Joon-young. I may not understand Joon-young, or even like him much, but I can feel every ounce of his sorrow, anger, and grief at facing his own mortality. The man has a will of steel, to be able to listen to Eul crying that she loves him, and not go to her and just love her while he can. Every time he sees her, he looks like he’s just a moment away from breaking down.

At this point I don’t even want or expect Joon-young to find a miracle cure, because his character arc has been entirely focused on the end of his life (and as I mentioned before, I knew someone who lost to this particular cancer, and it is a vicious illness that’s hard to beat even when you do pursue treatment). I do want him to realize that love is more valuable than revenge, so that he can die without regrets and knowing that Eul loves him. But for all of his angst and self-denial to be worth it, he almost has to die, otherwise it will render everything that we will have invested in for ten weeks meaningless. And he was on the right track before he veered off into revenge territory, back when his final wish was to tell Eul how much he loves her. I want him to learn to embrace love again, and leave knowing that he did do something meaningful before he died — he loved well.

I don't think it's amnesia per say; just short term memery loss- which makes since given that he has an inoperable brain tumor that's been growing everyday.

Not to say this story isn't without it's plethora of needless tropes.... I've kind of lost count.

Let's see just for fun:
Terminal illness (specifically brain tumor)
Rough, rich, and arrogant male lead
Poor female lead
Loan sharks
Evil mother interfering in love lines/ paying off female lead
Birth secrets
Truck/car of doom X2
Leads having only one or no parents
Second lead man (sympathic)
Second lead female (pretty and well dressed terrible person) - seriously I'm always in love with second lead female's style
Second leads relentlessly pursue someone that has already turned them down 100 times
Noble idiocy
Terrible communication
Repeat conflicts

Now which ones are we waiting for?

- Subway sandwich date
- Pretty Woman shopping makeover montage
- 1 year time skip while someone studies pointlessly in America

I feel like I must be missing a few... But I'm sure the writers will fit them in the last four episodes, so we are okay.

I can see it now Kazzah,

After months of angst and agony Nul and YG finally decide they want to grab onto the little time they have left together and actually go on a few dates. Then JY says "Please let me die alone. I don't want you to see me like this" She's like "okay fine." They kiss then she leaves. The media reports that he died the next day. Sad. :(

Nul suddenly decides to take up Evil mom's offer to study abroad but for only one year- ish. She decides to go to America, AKA the birthplace of Subway, to closely study the next subject of her new documentary:

The art of the perfect sub: simply sublime

Naturally, it's a big hit and now she doesn't have to ask random people for handouts all the time.

She comes back to Korea to find that JY didn't die and decided to have brain surgery to extend his life by a little over a year just so he could be with Nul longer. She's touched, but now they only have one or two or maybe at the most three months left together... Again.
They kiss, then there is a epilogue of them doing adorable things together (complete with a pretty women shopping spree makeover), and then he dies and we're all really sad this time. The end.

You might have missed a few of the ones that are so common that we have come to accept them as normal Korean behavior, like never finishing a meal in a restaurant, but overall you covered all the important ones. And that is the problem I have with this - not really original - just the same old tropes repackaged with continual angst.

That's a great point! I'm not Korean so it's always in the back of my mind... Is this a Korean thing or only a Dramaworld thing? Like when an adult woman cuts or burns herself cooking and the guy grabs and then scolds her for being clumsy. Or piggyback rides when someone is drunk. Going to the hospital for the tiniest possible injury. Throwing a beverage in someone's face. Sexy 28 year old virgins.

Inquiring minds want to know.

0

Nearly all of that and many others are purely Dramaworld things.

? Thank you for making my day with your comment. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

Imagine how we who actually watched it up to now feel ?

I went through all this time thinking, in all this melo cliche at least there's no amnesia and now what does the drama give us, four episodes before the end? FREAKING AMNESIA.

He isn't suffering from amnesia. Do you guys even watch? He knows Eul, he knows his manager, he knows he had a dog. He forget about sending it to countryside, but after remembers it. He is having trouble with memories, because of growing tumor, but he didn't forget anything. Just some memories becoming blurry and then coming back. Especially if you watched previews (c'mon, they're here after all episodes), it's pretty much clear, that he is not suffering from amnesia.

Thank you.

We all knew it was coming.

For instance Gook Young Hyung was there after being reinstated as manager. He gets angry for something stupid and quits again. The reason isn't important. The important part was the double phone call to Joon Young to insult him, unknowingly harsh via Gook Young, when JY has a major lapse in memory.

He looks defeated when he suddenly has 2 women at his door. Trying to figure what is going on, totally adorable.

He's having memory loss, which we common people with no medical education call amnesia.

And I don't trust the previews anymore.

Also Let us not forget, that the reason for the " so called amnesia" is used for a different purpose than "oh I am not sure of the person I loved" -- BOF wall of fame, lol.

But now Joon Young is almost exonerated of his past as we don't know how much he is aware of and what measures he has put into place for him to carry out justice in Eul's honor when he was informer that this memory loss was a huge possibility.

If he is going to feel bad now it is going to be about how he treated her on school. I mean he tripped her and victimized her by claiming that she was dating him on school while her friend was already suicidal over him.

But we will see this is subjective commenting on a do all and end all, I guess. Hehe.

I get your point. OTOH, I've been waiting for his memory to start going, at least in part, because my dad had brain cancer and it was one of the most distressful parts of it for him in the last three months before the end when his memory started gapping like this.

@ Barbrey
I am sorry for your loss.

Wow that does sound truly real and tough now. Even sadder because this is a real proven symptom in real life.

But to those who can't believe that memory loss / amnesia is being thrown in to the mix too. And are upset that this trope has come into play in this episode, it actually may have started earlier.

After Joon Young beats up Yoon Parks character, Eul comes to test/ thank him at the elevator. He ignores her and she says it proves he cares. He remains silent... Then and comes into his hotel room. He gets up, understandable, she leaves and sulks outside.

Then he calls his mom and asks her to tell him the 3 reasons he ... Wait here I will just quote Lollypip from episode 14:

"Joon-young’s mother’s restaurant is bustling, but she still answers when he calls. He interrupts her greeting and asks for three reason why he can’t date Eul… he knows he gave her a list, but he can’t remember anything. Mom claims to be too busy to talk and hangs up, and Joon-young says to the now-dead connection that he’ll date her then, if Mom can’t remember, either. He’ll just pretend there weren’t any reasons."

Either that is foreshadowing of the grandest kind or that was the beginning stages of the memory loss, that would be considered as retrograde amnesia that is a result of illness.

I'm sorry to hear that...

Yes. LKH didn't pull amnesia card out of nowhere. It's part of the brainstem glioma symptoms. Not to let SJY has it for the sake of avoiding another cliche trope would sacrifice the accuracy.

I'm so annoyed to come here to talk about the show, and then the first comment i get is this, from ppl who don't even watch the show and just follow recaps.

If u had actually watched carefully u would have noticed that it's not amnesia, he's naturally loosing chunks of his memory due to the brain tumor. It's what happens when u have a brain tumor. what else do u expect ? I'm pretty sure if he didn't show these symptoms and then just died, ppl would have came here and mocked the show in an other way, saying he had a brain tumor yet looked quite healthy then just dropped dead etc etc. yeah.

and then W is still being mentioned here,
Just to remind u ppl that W is more of a rom com, and UF is fully melo. what else do u expect? of course the list of problems is long for UF and short and simple for W.

Again thank you.

Everyone knew Joon Young would become symptomatic. This is not Amnesia/ memory lapse/ or mirrored dementia in a younger person is all plot points that came in to play long before we see it.

So why should a lapse in writing logic be used as the tragedy's flaw now. It makes sense actually because the writer has clearly chosen to put JY in that 1% that is uncommon to experience this illness. So he must be in the percentage of people who are in heavy denial, doesn't want to go for treatment and has the severe memory symptoms.

That is how it is, discuss that already or find a new plot hole to bring down. Like the fact that Ji Tae is so jealous of Joon Young he can't even see straight, but it means nothing now because Eul isn't even interested in him even from the beach scene where Eul confesses to Ji Tae she was not being genuine.

Oh and also I don't get why what Joon Young did was so bad in terms of him keeping his illness a secret.

He did not want his mother to cook for him and give him some pity parties out of sympathy over his encroaching end. He wanted her to know what a corrupt junk- trunk CHJ is and hopefully out of her own, but he considered his mothers feelings too much to tell her about her baddie: CHJ.

Similarly with Eul he didn't want her falling for him out of pity so he knew never to tell her. That is why he was so nonchalant about her finding out about his illness through the doctor. He could have sued etc.

It was only until Eul tried to knock CHJ over and Ji Tae told him not to pursue Eul anymore because of who his father is, that he stopped his cutely-defective plan. And later Ji Tae uses the fact that JY is terminal to prevent him from hurting Eul even further but JT forgets easily that he humiliated Eul by rejecting her before at the beach.

Joon Young thus realizes that he must inform his mother of what a loser his father is despite his mothers pedestal-trophy idea of CHJ and his, cough ... High morals and ethics.

So JY offers her to date Eul for real because even if she falls for him, to late at this point because she already has, he has already thought that when he dies or she just finds out that his dying she will really hate him for that and Ji Tae would go for her because a popular Hallyu star was sooooo in love with her before he died.

He was trying to make Eul more stunning than she is by opening her vulnerability and he probably hoped at the time that Ji Tae would come to his senses and go for a great catch like Eul.

And hey if Ji Tae was poor like he said he was it would not matter I am sure she would be getting a 99% share in JYs will and Pororo gets 1%.

So no he is not being a selfish jerk at all and let's leave noble idiocy to the knights of the round table too because clearly pursuing Eul after counting to 10 so that he could have spent the better part of three months at that point with her was clearly not noble idiocy. Thanks just some notes of the abuse that selfish jerk and noble idiocy gets especially in UF, lol!!!

If someone was fooled by a single trailer when right from the very first episodes first scene, it was obviously a doom-gloom drama, then count me in the baffled list.

Then again, maybe the reason u do make revenge plans is because u hav a neurologic problem. ??

I was mad at Ji Tae for telling JY to go die in a hole, and then im happy again coz hes directing his anger properly and now he's telling JY again to go to a corner & just die. ☹️

Totes agree on Suzy's acting here! ?

I gasped when evil mom said "like before"... I didnt think she could surprise me more for her evil-ness. I do feel sorry for JE because of that.

Also, regarding Jik & HaRu yes pls meet the parents! (Cant wait to see evil moms horrified face.... Although I am afraid what she might do to Jik! ? Im counting on you HaRu!)

No way.

She means he can view them as a friendship. Because he needs help.

For her I am pretty sure it was somewhere in school, that she will never get over him.

For him I think he always knew he was in awe of her but suppressed it because of his now meaningless prosecutor dream and how hard he tried not to disappoint his mother. But he only realized it when she showed up so intensely by his house and made the snow man. Remember....

JY loves NE deeply but NE didn't know
NE loves JY as much as he does but JY didn't know

They have so little understanding towards each other's feeling. But of course they do... when they never talked from heart to heart *sigh*

So NE said that SJY's decision to push her away came from that misunderstanding. He failed to understand that what she really wants for her in this tragic situation is to be by his side every seconds because she loves him.

@ rainhana

I think you are actually correct, that is what she said and I think that is actually what really occurred over the last 9 years and 11 months and probably +_ 2 weeks.

See they were in love but never admitted to each other because they didn't have to they knew at the event of her fathers death already.

When she says I don't wanna see you as a love interest, here she may be referencing the present day. This is a lie she tells herself because he is from a different world now and she knows she would get hurt anyway.

But she finishes that off with that was all a lie. First she says she likes him, but then says she loves him.
Thank you Eul that was clear from the flashbacks.

But Joon Young at that point is not pushing her away because of his illness. He is pushing her away because of reason 2: the USB theft that prevented her from attaining justice.

It would be interesting if she does not remember that USB with madam Song on it. Which will make sense because hello she should by now realize that Song looks like Young Ok and that hello ... Choi frequented Song. And that I dunno that perhaps Choi is Joon Young's father, or reason number 1 for pushing her away.

She thinks he is pushing her away because he lied to her about being ill, or kept the truth about it away from her and still pursued her. So just to try and get on the same page with Joon Young she tries to make him feel like he needs to trust a chingu right now, and she is hoping that he can forgive himself only for lying about his health and let her help him.

I want to tell you something! Open the door
You're pushing me away on purpose, right?!
Because you think I'd have a hard time after you are gone?
Did you think you were doing this for my sake?
Don't kid yourself!
When did we ever fall passionately in love with each other?
I can't understand a word you say
and you can't understand me either
Our timing was always off.
That's right I was lying! When I said let's not see each other as a couple,
it was all a big lie!
I like you.
I love you.
That's why every second that I don't see you feels like it's being wasted!
So from now on I won't do anything but be with you!
I am going to be stuck next to you and stare at you until I put a hole on your face!
Joon Young, come see me, please! Open the door!

This is the NE's full monologue. My take on this is that she basically told SJY to not make decision for her when he never fully understood her all this time. Please, open the door and stop pushing her away. He's wrong if he thinks that this is what the best for her. What she really needs is to be with him every seconds before he's gone because she actually still loves him and she'd regret every seconds they waste not seeing each other. All she had said before (in episode 15) to not see each other as a couple was all lie. She lied because she misunderstood him too. She thought he didn't like her anymore.

She said:
When did we ever fall passionately in love with each other?
I can't understand a word you say
and you can't understand me either
Our timing was always off

to point out to SJY that he never understood her, so did she. She referred to the past when she liked him but SJY was dating NR, when SJY was pursuing her but she was pushing him away and pretending that she didn't like him, when NE was pursuing him but SJY was pushing her away because he was sick but NE didn't know he's sick, when NE said let's not see each other as a couple because she thought SJY didn't like her anymore but he actually never stops loving her. They never passionately fell in love with each other. How come the could when they never fully understood each other's feeling. So she explained her actual feeling now that he can understand what she really needs instead of deciding on his own.

Agree with the parts that states she liked JY from back in the day. I think he liked her too but he was too in love with the idea of being loved by his biological father. And had to work hard studying to become a prosecutor to grant his mothers wish. There is a scene where Young Ok refuses to feed him in full school uniform and I think this and his growing dispondence with CHJ was the reason he offers/asks/dares Eul to pursue him on their school days. But she could not because of her suicidal friend and she moving away when her father died.

NR was the girl that was suicidal over him right? I nearly thought that was Nari, hehe.

Any way if it is that girl I guess I don't have to go all the way back to that recap to look up her name, although I can't get enough of Woo Bin in school gear. Lol!!!!

0

*despondence

Where is auto correct when someone genuinely needs him, hah?

Aghhh, I just realized I am gonna miss Woo bin after the statute of limitations run out on Eul's dad's case. Bye school uniforms or should he call it quits at 29 and make a break of girl mobs by enlisting that year?

0

@rooting for this drama Yes... that suicidal girl was actually NR = Na Ri... LOL. So Na Ri that we know right now was SJY's ex.

0

I am baffled by that, she was the friend that would be hurt should Eul have pursued SJY on highschool?

I had no idea they dated as they are positioned so oblivious to each other in the present day in this drama.

I thought SJY just told that idiot boyfriend of Nari that they dated and that Nari is his style and he made a mistake to break up with her in an attempt to coax Nari in to telling him Eul's whereabouts.

But then again I find myself liking this show too much, considering the fact I could not even get to the second episode of 'Nice Guy'.ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ!!!

0

In other sub, she said "we didn't even have earth-shattering love blabla." I think she actually meant that they didn't have a lot of time being together, like other couples had, they didn't even have time to show their love with each other. they were just starting and like a lightning, it ended too soon so they never been able to be "show" their madly in love with each other. As for the line "it was all a lie." It has a continuation, "it was all a lie. I don't want to break up with you" :)

I don't know whether someone has mentioned this before. Here goes, what I think Haru's purpose to the story : to show that she has a warmhearted and doting father and cold mom.

At first, it was just hinted like every time mom come into the kitchen, the conversation turned serious or Haru leaves. Now, that we know Mom is evil, those small things seemed more pronounce.

That, while Assemblyman Choi has made some (grave) mistakes, he's actually still the person Yoon-Joung's Mom talking about.

Joon Young's mom is just like Eul in that way, despite JY being 2nd generation corruption she still finds herself drawn to Mr Imperfect in Character; JY.

It is what it is but the audience knows the several internal battles JY is faced with and nothing toward Choi because of the way he made a name for himself, coerced or not.

Choi may be warm hearted but is a first generation corrupt person.

So, Choi is human after all. He did wrong in covering up JE's crime. That was a corrupt act, using his position then for political mileage. But he's not TOTALLY corrupt. He protested at the admission of a known corrupted politican into their party. Or was it as a candidate for a post? I don't remember the details but he was overridden by JE's dad.

He genuinely cares for his daughter, spending time with her and he treats JT like his own biological son. We've also seen him being considerate of his wife, treating her with kindness. Despite visiting the Madame who's a doppleganger to his ex lover, Choi doesn't cheat on his wife. He is very much a family man to me.

So yeah, by the wrong that he committed he may not be the man that Young Ok thought he was but he's human. Flawed but not hopelessly lost. And i believe, redeemable.

I think it is too late for CHJ because JY was well informed about his illness and thus he was aware of the fact his memory may show signs of permanent or temporary retro-amnesia.

Because let's call a spade a spade. Amnesia, a word synonymous with a plot to a show with either a good or extremely bad plot but is never included in an extremely bad PLO because that sort of stuff only occur in real life.

In it's spectrums you may know things you always knew, even show prowess in a skill that you didn't have before but the most limiting factor is the 'clean slate theory' which is a completely different type of amnesia known as antero which is a cooler theoretical plot perspective because that would mean JY will have to store his memories somewhere or ask someone to at least remind him where his memories are stored like in RAM or in a safe deposit box. New memories don't last as long as they should and the victim is forced to make notes of what they learnt on that day in terms of a plot in a sleuth style drama.

So I am sure the evidence JY had collected on people like CHJ, and JE he had stored it somewhere. So that Ji Tae can't change his mind about eventually maybe in the next decade oust all the baddies.

Remember, for lack of a more suited word, Ji Tae was clearly going to let the statute of limitations expire and have all the baddies get away with 'murder' as it were.

So yes prosecutors, should know these things and CHJ knew, he probably forgot about Eul's situation. But he has no right to claim memory loss like JY, he never even made a stranger than fiction request to the dramas writer.

The memory loss is a great take on complete exoneration though.

This show just pisses me off. It's created the two most hateful and unredeemable female characters ever in Jung-eun and Ji-Tae's mother. With the former she literally killed someone and now goes around randomly assaulting people who she thinks are beneath her. Ji-Tae's mother isn't just conniving and corrupt apparently she also has to be like really bad at running her business.

Joon-young...I don't even know what Joon-young is doing. This show isn't enjoyable for me anymore. I should really switch off because I know the writer is not intent on giving anyone a happy ending but at this point i'm too invested in Joon-young and Eul to leave.

What will JT do with his parents money and status? Become easily corrupted of course. Eul being with him at that point will just make her miserable and hated by Nari and Jik.

Throughout the episodes one of the most heartbreaking aspects has been to see Shin Joon Young facing his illness alone. So many times when he has been overcome with his sunptoms he has been alone. My heart has ached for him because he could reach out to the people who love him, but he chooses to keep them out. I think that he has internalized feelings of worthlessness and abandonment from his childhood. He saw how horribly his mother was treated because she was a single mother and he never knew his father growing up. Then, he made the mistake that harmed No Eul leading to his mother's rejection. Seeing him take accept her harsh words in the early episodes before he opened up to her showed how little he loves himself.

Therefore, the scene where No Eul sat by his side and took care of him after he passed out and then told him that she wanted to be by his side was sooooooo sweet and sad. Although Shin Joon Young literally shut her out of his home, I hope that she barges right back into his life and does not allow him to push her away anymore. She definitely knows what she wants, understands the real Shin Joon Young, and has the inner strength to stand up for what she believes in despite being treated poorly. I want to see Shin Joon Young and No Eul spend time together loving each other before the end (of the show and his life). I am afraid that the writer will spend too much time ripping them apart instead.

I have grown to enjoy how Kim Woo Bin's performance of Shin Joon Young meshes with Suzy's portrayal of No Eul. Both characters are deeply scarred by their pasts and flawed in the present, but the way that the two performances work together capture for me why they could be good for each other. When they are together, they give each other strength and make up for each other's weaknesses. The actors play well off each other. Kim Woo Bin is stellar and Suzy improves in her scenes with him.

I wish they could follow through on his plan to go away together, leave everyone and everything behind, and just enjoy being in love!

You know that comment I made in a very early episode about Kim Woo Bin not bringing his A-game for this drama? Yeah, I take that back.

This drama is all sorts of frustrating (during those moments when I bothered to care. Most times, I just treat this as a night-cap, which means, watch and sleep halfway) but Kim WooBin is really selling the desperation and hopelessness and pain. And the illness.

Like JiTae, I'm just waiting for him to die, but not because I want him gone, but because it's the only logical result. Miracles happen, and I'd love for a miracle to happen here but... that'll just feel like a cop-out.

Suzy was kinda okay-terrible in the early episodes (lol, her whining then...) but she's become better in these episodes. Is this a good sign for her acting progression?

I agree, such a good feeling to be wrong in what I also said earlier that this was not Woobin at his best ☺/he wasn't being great. And even Suzy is ok now, not distractingly bad like at the start of the drama. A bit 'surface' but still, ok. With Woobin I try to not be a delulu fangirl and have a honest view of his acting, so it's really good to see him be so great after starting out not as great as I saw him in the past. ????

I have to admit this much about Lee Kyung Hee, she always writes good roles for her main leads even when the plot goes insane. The romance/chemistry was not insane like previous LKH dramas but their individual roles really show the best of what they can do and in Woobin case that happens to be great.

The one I feel bad for is the actress playing Jung Eun,, her character is just written to be as hateful and insane as possible. I feel like hateful second female leads with no development is a kdrama cliche that really freaking needs to die. I don't even mind a hateful seconde lead if it's like Han Jae Hee in Nice Guy or Baek In Ha from Ch***se in the Tr*p where at least you see into their mind to know what makes them like that. Much better for everyone, from viewer to actress.

Woo Bin's performance rips my heart out.

Suzy's performance works for the character because No Eul keeps her emotions so deeply hidden that I can "buy" that they only ripple to the surface occasionally and even, to a lesser degree, that they are overwhelming when she does let them out (though some of the crying/yelling early in the drama was a bit much). While Suzy is not particularly subtle or nuanced, I thought she hit the right emotion in the scene where she hugged Joon Young's Mom. Combined with the dialogue that they should not cry too much, I really "saw" No Eul's core emotion and strength. At that moment Suzy reached "ripped my heart out and made me cry" status!

4 episodes left and we still can't see where this drama is going!!! It's so frustrating. I've already committedly invested my time, energy & heart since the beginning of the drama & throughout the 16 current episodes. So it'll be all meaningless if I give it up now and miss the ending for having lost hope in the last 4 episodes.

What disappoints me the most is Ji Tae. How could he says those things to Joon Young? What is wrong with him? He is the most hypocritical character ever.

I guess what's going on here is that the writer-Nim is trying to do "something different". You see for the first half of 2016, we've seen a lot of bromance being celebrated in Koreans Dramas. Notable examples we can see are in DOTS and probably in Entertainers too. So maybe (just maybe), the writer-nim is trying to produce a story line without having to make do with the bromance part. (In order to move from "trends" possibly or because this is a melodrama?) ?? But sadly, if it's really the case here, the attempt is totally NOT working!!

It's episode 16 and JiTae's mom continues to surprise me. Oh, I can't wait to see what the writers are planning to make her fall apart.

Joon Young having his memory fade... Oh that hurts a lot to continue watching. Urgh, Kim Woo Bin and Suzy works well together, it's really sad to see the characters they portray contradicts this matter of fact, as Joon Young and Noh Eul probably has the worst communication problem ever and keeps on having repeating conflicts.
One thing for sure, they won't be winning the "Best Couple Award" Hahahah.

Haru & Jik should continue whatever they are doing ❤️❤️ So cute! Since it's the only lively thing in this drama to shift our focus from the dying .

Watching the preview doesn't look all too promising either. Then again, these have been the worst kind of tease to viewers. False hopes & broken dreams seemed endless.

KBS has once disappointmented me with Blade Man's ending making all the good acting (especially Lee Dong Wook's) uncredited for. I just can't be an ease, if Uncontrollably Fond goes down that road.
UF has it all production wise, a GREAT team of actors and actresses, GREAT chemistry between the actors and actresses, GREAT and defined portrayals of the characters by the actors and actresses, GREAT music & definitely GREAT cinematography.
The ONE thing that is vital to the success of any k-dramas is also the ONE major problem to Uncontrollably Fond and that is the playwriting, writers & plot flow.
I understand now why Kim Woo Bin posted a apology message as the initial episodes were aired and something along these lines "I hope when the fans watch the ending they won't be so disappointed"...
Since Uncontrollably Fond is pre produced, that's almost like he knew where it will all lead to in the end.

Deep sigh..., as the high anticipation for a redeemed ending can't seem to fade, I'll brace myself for the episodes to come, no matter how...

Why no one can get KWB's letter right? He didn't apologize for drama, he didn't even address to criticism. Did any of you really, I mean really read letter? He said, that he can't help, but hope, that he didn't disappoint his fans with his acting, that he is sorry for not coming back with bright and funny character, after they waited for so long (and it's only time, when he apologized... expect when he apologized for leaving his letter so late in the night), he also considered time, that he spent filming UF as his most happy memories (as an actor), because he learned so much as about emotions and he hopes, that he will be able to please audience in last episode and make them feel, what he felt and wish, that fans will also watch last episode and support him and drama.
Not even a word about negatively. Not even a word of apologizing for drama. Yet people somehow twisted his words so hard, making all that false headlines and pretty much used it as an excuse to hate him and attack the drama.

The real thing about the illness is the 10 years in terms of the statute of limitations is running out, and he has no immediate clue.

The illness and all the symptoms is not the point. The point is his motivations are being solidified. As he only has 13 days left. Same with the audience we only have 13 days left to watch the best actor in the world suffer for the flak of this drama and as Joon Young.

Who will help him? Has he written things down or made video enteries like in "50 first dates" but in a melo form?

I was confused about this 13 days cuz i thought he had 2 months left not just 13 days. so i did a little digging on the meaning of statue of limitations, and apparently it isn't about the illness, it's a law saying a crime case is closed and no further investigation is allowed after some time, say 5 years even if unresolved. so it might be about the accident case. JY still has almost 2 months.

[warning spoiler from another old show:]

Yeah the same thing in Signal, I didn't watch the whole show but it appeared that the law state 15 years for murder with intent, and 10 years for murder caused by an accident or crime where someone dies as a result of someone's action without the intent to kill of course.

That is how it appears the law works if so lucky JE, but she doesn't know JY got some plans up his sleeves, I hope now that the retroA or anteroA has set in.

What I meant by the 13 days is the turmoil for the ever faithful audience, like will we ever see Pororo again? Will JY listen to Eul and get treatment for his apparent symptoms etc etc.

I think I shouted 'Let her help you!' at least a million times this episode. Now that No Eul knows about his illness, I legit want Joon-young to say eff it and just spend the rest of his days with her.

Ji-tae is really pissing me off with that 'go die' mess. He is turning out to be bitter and cold-hearted. Even if JY dies, I hope he NEVER gets the girl. It's hard to root for him when he is being such a bastard.

Ji-tae's Mom is something else boyyy. I never thought I would feel bad for Jung-eun and I did this episode. Only for like half a second though. She will get no sympathy from me. Honestly with the way Ji-tae has been acting lately they kind of deserve each other.

And Kim Woo Bin!!! He is definitely the reason I keep coming back. He is killing this role and even though his character is frustrating as hell, I am loving his portrayal. Suzy also has been doing a great job. There were a few episodes that were a bit iffy but she has been doing pretty well lately.

Hopefully, this revenge arc ends soon because we only have 4 episodes left and I can't suffer through more of this. Let it die.

well looks like deep inside of me he's already won that top fav spot ? hopefully he gets recognition for this great work despite the low rating.

Finally you get it, LollyPip. Yes for who doesn't get why Joon Young decides this kind of way to pay off his fault, yes, he is a more complex human being in the inside than we know from the outside. For who say he's not being truthful, no, he's in the process for being truthful, he will be, he's trying but in his own way. His way might be not right, not the best way, its pathetic spending limited time you have in pretenses and loneliness but i believe deep in his heart he doesn't want it too but the reality is too cruel for him to die selfishly. The fact that Joon Young himself is still in the middle of accepting or not accepting his fate about dying soon. It's perplexing.

But this complexity make me sympathize a jerky man in korean drama for the first time. I really appreciate his way to do his bucket list only for Eul secretly, again it might be not the right way but its so sincere. The main character portrays love in selfless point in korean drama, its rare for me. And it becomes more interesting when the two main characters, Joon young and Eul, show their love to each other in-i can say-opposite path.

Oh even I'm in the point if Joon Young really dies at the end. It will be a perfect and beautiful ending for this tale.

I know evil mom is evil through and through but Ji Tae is past the point of redemption for me? Why does he keep directing his anger at Joon Young when he isn't even interfering with Eul anymore. Is it his fault that his greedy parents are way too powerful for him to bring down, so when he is unable to do so he goes and tortures Joon Young to get a sort of catharsis, he needs a shrink asap. The crazy in the gene pool of his mother is there partially in his too, so get a therapist dude.
And Brainstem Giloma is a horrible cancer, realistically speaking there's no way for Joon Young to survive this with him refusing treatment for so long, in fact he should be unable to function properly by now in reality. Also, has Joon Young's great oncologist considered the fact that this fella is depressed. Depression is a common phenomenon in terminally ill patients where they give up their wish to live and portray those emotions in a variety of different including refusal of treatment, food or water and what not. Has he given him any psych evaluation because take all the backstory away and Joon Young is one severely depressed cancer patient who needs help.
I hope Eul doesn't end up with anybody. She should just leave both the boys and their baggage behind once it is over and never look back. She should find a stable guy and find some happiness. Both Joon Young and Ji Tae with their emotional baggage are too unstable for her and the power balance in their relation will forever be uneven so she should not end up with anybody in my opinion. In fact, I want Eul to take Jik and run to a kingdom far far away right now at this moment if she can do it.

About Eul ending up with someone. I'm pretty sure that while her heart is with Joon Young, he won't survive this drama. So that only leaves Ji Tae, and I have a feeling that he's so guilt-ridden that he would not be able to accept Eul's love if she were to give it to him. After all, his father covered up the hit and run, his mother did something evil, can't remember, his fiancee killed her father, and his brother caused Eul to get into a car accident herself. So more than likely she'll end up alone, but hopefully there will at least be some closure for herself and Jik.

From the start i always saw it this way, that JY will die but ask JT to take care of her, if she accepts.
but now JT has become so irredeemable that even i who loved him from the start won't accept it. unless he does something really big and important, and kind of apologize for being os jerky towards JY.
He changed way too much. in these past few episodes.
I still have hope for him to redeem himself.

Required fields are marked *

okay ji tae does not need to redeem himself. from his point of view, joon young is just a wrecking ball in eul's life. he left her after getting her into a car accident and then he goes about pursuing her and causing all sorts of havoc in her life. ji tae tried to help her through all this. he didn't go seeking justice then bcs those were his parents and he ofc would betray them just like that. however, now he knows enough is enough and he is trying to take them down. amidst all this, joon young is just causing more heartache for eul and is now making things a whole lot messier by trying to get with jeong eun. (and joon young is a mess. he doesn't care whether ppl get hurt by his actions (even eul right now) and honestly his disease ISN'T an excuse to treat ppl like crap?) so overall ji tae's actions aren't stupid nor are they reckless and idiotic. he's just trying to set things right.

0

@aaaa

I get your point about JT and agree, but not entirely.
as u said that's from JT's pov. the truth is JY rid Eul of himself for all those years. He disappeared out of guilt, he almost got her killed to protect his dad's secret. and now he's trying to make up for that mistake before he takes her back, and before he runs out of time.
JT's acting jealous of JY, he doesn't respect NE for choosing JY. he is practically waiting for him to die so he can get the girl. I can forgive him for these. but not for repeatedly telling JY to go die. This was too cruel for JT's character to say. that's what's most annoying me. and i want him to make up for it.

0

@aaaa

You have a good point on JY.

But let's say for example Ji Tae, out of anger caused by jealously, for once acts out of his normal impeccable character, cough sarcasm, and kicks the hell out of JY when Eul comes crying that Joon Young treated her like crap.

But that is just JYs memory situation and his frustrations that go with that.

And no matter how much his oncologist, I am assuming Dr Kang is, tries to explain to Eul the difference between retro and antero - grade amnesia she doesn't understand the difference or can't recall the difference because she is also suffering with one of the two and she can't figure out which one she has. Lol, I can hardly follow my own train of thought.

Because she never referred to the madam Song USB blackmail device again, oh wait maybe she was threatened right ... And so was JY that is why he had to stay away from her. Probably one of JTs moms henchman that threatened them both not to talk of the blackmail means to end things so horribly for Choi.

0

@rainhana

joon young never bothered about the past when he started pursuing eul. he didn't even think of asking her about her scars from the past. all he wanted was to love her bcs he's dying soon. he bothered her with her job as his documentary pd all in an attempt to make her fall for him. if I was ji tae, I would've just been like "what on earth?" ji tae knows joon young is one of the reasons eul's life is as big of a mess as it is now and to see him literally chase after eul, hurting her over and over again when he decides that he wants to stay away from her (whatever his reasons, this is a move of a jerk), it must've been annoying. to ji tae, joon young has been a huge nuisance. and, as cruel as it may be, he does want him dead. he's causing eul more pain and ji tae loves eul so what do you expect? who would stand for something or someone hurting their loved one?
as for the waiting for joon young's death thing, yes he is waiting for his death. but when you put things into perspective and rid yourself of a bird's-eye-view, you'll see that, despite how awful it sounds, ji tae is in the right in wanting someone with a terminal illness dead.

0

@Rooting for this drama

the problem with joon young's character is that he's absolutely selfish. I find that a huge put off but it seems like I'm the only one that thinks so bcs many don't want to bad mouth a dying guy. his illness isn't an excuse for his attitude towards things and people in his life. take the manager, for example. he just told him to go send jeong eun home while not even giving him a reason. what kind of a jerky move is that? you got yourself into that mess and now someone else has to complete it for you, without even having a reason?
I'm not sure about his memory loss thing. when I saw that he was losing big chunks of his memory, I was just questioning it? but if he is losing his memory, isn't what ji tae said right? joon young is dying and he needs to back up from all this justice-seeking, or else it'll just cause problems for everyone else. he's not capable of remembering important bits, so why is he bothering? he claims it's bcs he loves eul but if he does, he would've given her a reason for their goodbye. I also don't get his rebellion. why doesn't he want to go to the hospital? he has people who care about him, and he doesn't even tell them, that is, again, very selfish of him. he wants to die, fine. but at least tell his mom. she might have treated him awfully for a long time but she does care about joon young.
joon young's character is highly problematic and really a huge mess that I'm forced to go through bcs I'm watching this drama. and considering all the light out on his deteriorating health, if this show doesn't end with him dead, it'll be a waste of time.
as for the usb issue, joon young is in the wrong for it. he also never bothered to bring it up to eul. he never planned on admitting the fact that he did lead her into that crash and that he's dying. if he did, I must've missed the scene but as far as I remember, no he didn't. he never asked eul whether she's over the past and whether she's all okay with it. he just assumed so, and acted so, not even giving eul a say in actions that impact her life greatly.
am I supposed to think of him as pitiful and feel any kind of sadness for him? he had a pitiful past and his disease is sad, too. but his current idiotic actions cover it all up that I'm left with nothing but bitter thoughts of joon young, as a character.

0

@ aaaa

Thanks for your reply.

And the explaination for your point of view for the reasons to your frustrations with Joon Young.

I guess I hold to strongly on the notion that:

It is not the weight of ones actions resulting in guilt that matters,
It is the weight of ones guilty conscience because of what one did. Thus resulting in Joon Young trying to attain justice for Eul.

Yes it took his illness to eventually start paying back for his crimes. But with Ji Tae it looks like if JY never got sick and irrationally pursued Eul, because hey JY is like the star of Korea in the show, that Ji Tae would still be masquerading around as the stalker of the century, not giving a hoot about Eul's true well being considering what he knows his family including, ironically JY, did to her. And yes they are not brothers based on blood but they both grew up idolizing CHJ.

0

Others shouldn't wait for a death news to start treating him right. sounds like for example we expect him to take charge of bringing his mom to senses with telling her about his illness. and since he didn't do it he's selfish? i don't think so.
also
JY never actively came back to Ne's life to make her fall for him again. He was clueless about her whereabouts until she approached him to do the documentary. he accepted to do it to help her, then he just found out that he had less time left. don't underestimate the effect of that on him, in fact it's strange to me to expect a dying person to NOT be selfish in this case. he wants to confess to her an be with her in his last days. and now we know she's also ok with it.

All JY did was to protect his dad, the accident was long in the past and she's clueless about his part in it. JY thought it was only him who knew about the theft. he exchanged his happiness for her life back then and now as he said last episode, he's paying her back with his inevitable death. so i think he's already paying too much for an unintended accident. and we still have 4 episodes left to see how he's gonna reveal the truth about everything. eventho it might cause NE to hate him.

JT's interference just made things more complicated. it was after his words that JY drew back from Eul. and now that he's trying to seek her justice, everyone's mad at him for pushing Eul away. sigh. JT just hung around NE despite knowing his parent's sins all these year and never did anything. quite the same as JY, trying to keep his parent's secret and cover the past. Now that he sees how JY is seeking justice, he wants to take everything in his own hands. while he could've done all that when JY was out out of picture.
plus he can't respect NE's decision to love JY, and he's driving them apart with making JY feel guilty for the past and reminding him that he's dying. the girl's already willing to stay by JY's side til his end. it's their choice. not his.

So no, i don't share your hatred and lack of sympathy towards JY. to me, both JY and JT are equally flawed and as much as their actions drive me mad and i don't agree with them, i can still understand and forgive them for being flawed and i'm just waiting to see how they'll finally make things right.
But yeah, the writing is a mess.

I liked the acting in these two episodes. The story is starting to get a bit muddled though, back and forth between Ji Tae and Jeong Eun -- our love square gets threatened by Mom and also by Joon Young who is attempting to create one super splash before he dies. I don't know if he has enough left to create what he wants though. Some say he has amnesia, but to me it looks more like dementia. I suspect the tumor is impinging on the brain itself and causing him to lose memories.

The acting of Assemblyman Choi, his agonizing still leads me to believe that he's going to sacrifice himself for Ji Tae, that is, his career, etc, and come clean about the cover-up of the car accident that started this rolling tragedy. Actually, maybe his sacrifice will be for Joon Young, not sure, but I feel that he is tired of living with his guilt. I am most confused about Madam Lee, who thinks she can control everyone and everything, and apparently has in the past. It's just a matter of episodes when it all hits the fan and she will be forced out of her job, and probably have to beg for forgiveness to a lot of people.

I suspect that Joon Young's plan will come to fruition, as they are stacking the deck against him. I have no idea how it will happen, but I'm guessing he recorded something somewhere and that will trigger the action leading to Jeong Eun's arrest. Either way, I don't like melodramas, but this show isn't that bad. They only have 4 episodes left now, hopefully they won't drag the plot out too much.

I must be the only one, who thinks, that IJH extremely weak in some moments and brings to charisma into his acting. If I liked his acting before, than in UF he kinda meh. Sometimes, when he screams and tries to look mad/surprised/heartbreak and ect, he is facial expressions to exaggerated and eyes have 0% emotions. You can basically tell he is acting.
Though all 4 has good roles. But no one is ready to analyze YJE more than just labeling her "crazy and b**tch".

0

It's a problem of second female leads, they can be great actresses and still end up with such roles where they're only there to be hated. At least the second male leads are written to be liked by the audience at the start.

I also feel bad for poor Pororo but at least he doesn't get hate.

0

Have you seen the interview for all of the main cast before the premiere? You got to listen to Woo Bin, Suzy, and Ju Hwan's answers, but Ju Eun's were mostly cut from the final product. There was a question that went "Which actor/actress do you think is the most different from their character?" And they all pointed at Ju Eun, but her response to that wasn't broadcast. It sucks even more along with the role she was assigned to...

Also @pigsnout, there's also the universal rule that no dog in a TV show will ever get hate, lol! But you did remind me - we need more Pororo, show!

0

@Anree It was one of their many interviews. Watch others, where she replayed along with others to questions. Their that interview overall was kinda short (also compared to others) and she is also not very talkative, unlike Im Joo Hwan.

Thanks LollyPip for the recap, as always, your thoughts are on point. My fav part in this episode is also the saddest part for me, it is when JY asked GY about what the statute of limitation means. He looked so lost and lonely. I truly believed that when he was zombie walking towards the door, he was reaching for NE. His look of desperation really broke my heart. Kim Woo Bin is killing it in this drama. As for NE, I liked that she's the stubborn kind as that is the only kind that would stand with JY. She continued on smiling although a bun was thrown at her face, hah! All in all, 4 episodes to go and more tissues to be used, the countdown begins again, huwaa...

The way he got angry about his overall situation when Eul wanted to help, now that was stellar. It is like he has moved on from the denial stage. But he is in limbo, no not purgatory, just that state where he wonders if this is the correct sequence things should go in before he dies.

So he goes back to denial and anger, because who made up the stages of grief anyway, did that group or being ever experience terminal illness? Okay maybe they experienced it or something similar it doesn't mean grief had stages set in stone.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross is the one who came up with the stages of grief. Knowing about them is useful when someone is trying to come to terms with loss or the prospect of loss. You may or may not experience any or all of the listed stages--there has been some discrediting of Kubler-Ross's findings but they are useful for trying to describe feelings and reactions.

I don't associate JY as being in denial so much as having to scramble to work through and get a grip on his intense feelings and at the same time repair the relationships that he can in his race against time. In the beginning he was acting out but we were given glimpses of his integrity. At this point this is a guy who isn't going to quibble about getting on his knees to apologize to another actor, pursued his mother until she allowed him back in, and who has said to Eul that she can write the check for everything he has. He may not have a lot of time but he was doing his best to bring a long game approach to making the guilty see and pay. Maybe it's mostly reactive but he keeps heading in the same direction. I especially liked the push back response he made to Ji Tae when Ji Tae essentially tells him to die already. He states that he wants to live and that his doctor said that people who want to live can live longer. Reminded me of the "nobody has an expiration date" ads from the Cancer Centers of America. After Ji Tae's cruel suggestion I cannot see Ji Tae as a redeemable option for Eul.

I see JY's not sharing about his illness to be wise, mostly to his benefit considering the sycophants around him, although it's a very lonely place--especially in the beginning as most of the people in his circle would have made his life more difficult, written him off, tried to use him, and suck up his energy. It's one thing to tell a person that they have a very serious disease with extremely low survival rate and it's another to tell them they are dying. One approach allows for alerting individuals to take care of their business but allows room for a different timetable of progression and even remission. The doctor knows (s)he is not god. It's another thing to tell someone they are dying and they have x number of months. That is their sentence. I believe that this approach is being discouraged as patients have become better able to research their options and realize that they can question doctors. I don't know how Eul got away with talking to JY's doctor but at least she now knows what he is up against. I didn't like that she told JY he was dying but it was meant to jolt and wake him up.

Writer, I suggest JY and Eul escape (he leavesacting) to a place where he isn't known so they can enjoy their time together. Before that, they get Pororo back. And before that they go to Houston (get away from ji Tae and his toxic family) and JY receives miracle experimental treatment which works.

@ Chris thank you for your comment. I really enjoyed reading your well written recap on this situation where JY is forced to push Eul away.

How did Eul get away with the doctor confiding her that is a good question?

0

Exactly, the one thing i noticed this episode was how deeply conflicted JY is.
and it's not just because of his illness, or that accident. It's the person he's become considering everything in his past. it explains his actions fully. If someone feels like they're not worth loving, trying to convince them otherwise is as hard as moving a mountain. I've seen that happen.
Tho we saw him start to walk towards NE before that alarm came up on his phone. He lost track of what he was doing after seeing that. he seemed so scared and clueless. omg. it's hurting so much to see him like this. WB is making me feel everything JY's feeling. I might even feel dead when he d... ?

I have been mislead with every preview. i thought JT was gonna help JY kindly. ugh.
and now with the way CHJ threatens JY in the preview, idk what to think. one minute he's at his door and crying, drowning in thoughts about him. then another minute he's threatening him?? after just finding out he's his only biological son? writer keeps making me hate her characters even more. why??

and i hope we haven't seen the last of Pororo ?

We all know JT is the omnipotent, arrogantly so, stalker of the show yet he does nothing to correct Eul's suffering until the other son nearly gets himself befuddled in the Choi households mess to such a degree that they don't even want him dating the "ruined" yet prized Jeung Eun, cough, cough, cough....

So, I have never read any recaps of any kdramas, I came here for the comment section to get to know people's point of view about this shit show that is going on. I mean, I'm really hating Sin Joon Young right now! I don't understand his game anymore and I can't stand the way he's trying to get Eul's revenge, it's just not right! I feel like both of them are hurting too much for nothing! It would have been perfect if they had just gone to that trip a long time ago but then it wouldn't be a kdrama right? (HAHA) Anyways, they are so pitiful right now. To watch this drama is to have a shot through my heart every goddamn second! It had been a while since I've cried watching kdramas but this one made me tear up a lot during these last episodes! It's really painful to see how things are turning out and what I hate the most (besides Sin Joon Young wrongdoings) is that I can't stop watching it. I want to see the end of it so much because I'm so sick of the way Sin Joon Young is dealing with all of this. When he kissed that bitch I really don't know how I kept my cool. I don't care if he's a complex human being, it's just too much for me! Every time I remember that he might actually die at the end, after all of what they have been through, I feel like dying inside too.

Sorry if I bothered anyone with my opinion, but I really wanted to get this off my chest. Plus, I'm hating Sin Joon Young but I deeply LOVE Kim Woo Bin and his acting and how he's capable of awesomely portray this character so well <3

My problem with this drama is not the acting - in fact it is better than I expected. Perhaps that is the problem - decent acting just makes the writing and the story all that much more frustrating. Everyone is so self-absorbed, greedy, nobly idiotic, and just plain stupid that if there was a goldfish I would root for it to win. There is no happy in this drama.

totally agree with you..the netizens keep blaming the actors though..why they cant just see that it's the poor storyline that contributes to the poor rating????

I just cant wait to see how JE gonna react when she is charged for that hit n run case. N i am still waiting to see JY come clean with NE abt that night when she almost die. Just dont let it happen in the final episode cos there wont be enuff time to absorb all the emotions that will come with it.

Hopefully Jitae wont let me down. Noh Jik n Haru r just too cute. It cant be helped.. Noh Jik need sum1 who can show him how to kid around. Haru needs sum1 to help her mature. I guess NE gonna be scared cos i really think she is afraid of both JT's mom n JE. Both r psychos.

Woo Bin, thank you so much!

Without you in UF and the beautiful way you speak to people is simply magnanimous, because quite frankly......mmmmmm ...,, maybe not. How do you keep your cool and your calmly smiling face as JY when you are being trampled by the weird-wrong doers in this show?

Without you in UF and the beautiful way you speak to people, which is simply magnanimous, more fans probably could not watch the show. Because quite frankly……mmmmmm …,, maybe not. And as Woo-bin? Give him Oscar for this role!!! Nailed it 200%!!!

I dont blame the actors' acting that made ths drama gone terribly down in their viewer rating, I strongly believe it's the storyline.. I mean its 2016 already, everyone's struggling with their life silently, the least we can do to fill the heart with warmth is something that's healing..a good romantic drama would do...the conflict in this drama make it unbearable to watch any longer..sorry. But the storyline reaaly sucks.

UF seems like the palindromic initials of the message that the writer wants to send the viewers - with the latest 2 episodes. What on earth is going on with SJY and the whole plot?
No hate at all to all the actors trying to do their best with what's given to them. Especially the lead actors/ actresses. The ost and KWB/ Suzy are the only reasons to watch.
C'mon show...

I think I like this drama because dyslexia is my biggest problem when it comes to Hangul and Korean. So reading the individual letters can pose a huge problem for me.

Nobody reads letters though, people recognize the words they read like a picture, illustration, photograph, photocopy. Mbaey shmoeow I ma meitkasn.

If you could read that last sentence, good we are on the same page. Maybe somehow I am mistaken, 예, about this drama!!! But I still love it and the whole plot and ensemble cast.

And I am trying my best to follow what's going on!!!

Thanks for the recap.

I think that Suzy’s acting has improved measurably during the course of this drama, and for me, she’s gone from tolerable to actually better than decent. I still wouldn’t call her a good actress, but she’s serving the character well and getting better with each episode, it seems.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. Someone needs to inform Suzy of the fact that screaming your lines during an emotionally charged angst-ridden scene or just because you know how to pout and purr...is not the only way to act or even express the range of emotion required in a 'melodrama.'

Respectfully and sorry, but I have to disagree with you. I'm not a Suzy fan but with recent episodes, she's really "better than decent". Her eyes really brought so much emotions even when she teared silently and the pained-but-trying-to-be-tough expressions (especially when she saw JY in elevator scene in episode 15, her one tear and betrayal shining in her eyes hit home... And this whole episode 16).

She may pouted, screamed and purred(?) in first few episodes but we have to give her credit with her obvious improvement and for being a better actress now.

Actually, I think that aegyo/comic scenes are not her forte because she looks a bit uncomfortable with that..while she really nailed most of serious and emotional scenes.

I'm so sad and frustrated with this drama but I'm so in love with #UncontrollablyFond that even tho every episodes made my heart ached and cried buckets of tears, I can't let it go.

This story doesn't only represent power, money and justice. But I do feel that Eul who people hates because she loves money and accept bribes is much more better person than the likes of Choi's family, Jung Eung and even Joon Young who looked perfect on the outside.

I hate and love JY, dude, come back to your senses, don't waste the last moments of your time for revenge. Eul wanted to move on but you and JT are too guilty to move past.

I'm now certified in love with Eul (plus Suzy's acting is really good with the recent episodes, her eyes express so much emotions)♡ Even tho the guys wanted to be her knight-in-shining armors....she's the strongest among them. Even tho she ended with no prince charming in last episode, I just want writer-nim to give her a happy ending with Nari and Jik. She deserves a peaceful life

I find JiTae's character became so lonely with recent episodes, he's doing all alone and I became sad for him...but at the same time I'm thinking that he's doing it on his own selfish reason. And this dude is one of the reason EulYoung couple's separation who continued to give JY pathetic advices.

JE, as much I hated her character. I can help but feel a "little" sympathy for her. She was clawed by Mrs. Choi for years.

I agree with recap tho. In previous episodes, NE is a character that hid her emotions more than JY, she acted annoyingly to look strong and dull her pain and conscience so the "screaming, pouting, purr" made sense and quite understandable.

But now tha NE's emotion are open, you can see more expressions in her face and you can feel her emotions. Suzy is really good now, I cried and feel her pain in the recent ones. The scene with JY's mom, Suzy nailed it and even ripped my heart. ?

At this point, the Korean Medical Association (or whatever they're actually called) should sue these broadcasting companies for misrepresenting their profession for years on end.
