Doctors: Episode 13

We’ve got more romance, some doctor-ing, and a couple more laps around the inferiority circle for Seo-woo. Hye-jung and Ji-hong ease into their romance, but it’s no easy task to involve themselves in each other’s lives. There are fine boundaries in the workplace and in their personal lives that they’re learning to navigate. All the while, our doctors take on a new case, reminding us that they’re capable neurosurgeons and multitaskers.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

We get quick glimpses of Hye-jung and Ji-hong in their childhood and fast-forward to where they are now. Hye-jung runs after Ji-hong and wraps her arms around him in a back-hug. She narrates: “Dating is a joint history written by a man and woman. Understanding and accepting each other’s past scars in the present is key to this history.”

In the neurosurgery department, Young-kook and Nurse Su-jin yawn in exhaustion as Hye-jung approaches. She receives a call from Kang-soo in the ER about a patient and orders him to prepare a surgery room. As she waits for the elevator, Hye-jung calls Ji-hong, who’s at home watching a surgery, but she hangs up shortly after since she’s entering the elevator.

Their quick conversation reminds Ji-hong about a recent voicemail that was accidentally recorded and sent from Hye-jung. In the voicemail, she asks why he hasn’t asked her out a second time, as he’d promised, and asserts that yes, she will date him. Ji-hong smiles as he hears her freak out in the voicemail that her message got recorded.

Hye-jung performs surgery while Kyung-joon dozes off next to her. She catches him nodding off and benevolently threatens him with a countdown to leave the surgery, insisting that she’s fine on her own.

In the break room, Joong-dae clears off the table at the arrival of their late night snack and enthusiastically greets the deliveryman (cameo by Namgoong Min). Before he leaves, Deliveryman turns around to ask the doctors about his seven-year-old son’s limp. His local clinic recommended that he take his son to a bigger hospital, and Kang-soo offers to schedule an appointment with Ji-hong.

Speaking of Ji-hong, he enters the hospital and finds Hye-jung after her surgery. Nurse Su-jin admires his commitment to his patients even when he’s not on call, but we’re not under that same oblivion. Ji-hong looks around for spectators before taking Hye-jung’s hand and leading her out. But then, a nurse passes by and Hye-jung shakes him off, acting nonchalant.

They go for a walk outside, and Ji-hong shows off his heart-shaped headphone splitter. He plugs it into his phone and plays no reply’s “Where is Love” as they walk hand in hand. They sit down, and Ji-hong gently strokes her hair. Inevitably, their romantic moment is cut short by a call from Kang-soo about another patient, so they walk back to the hospital together, milking every moment they have.

The next day, Deliveryman watches his two sons giggle and play with each other in the hospital lobby. The nurse calls for the younger son, Dal, and they enter Ji-hong’s office. Ji-hong asks Dal to walk to him and back to his father, and his smile falls after watching Dal drag his feet.

In the directors’ meeting, Myung-hoon compliments Tae-ho for bringing up the neurosurgery department’s profits. It seems that the video of Ji-hong’s DBS surgery on the Olympic archer really marketed their department. Myung-hoon reissues their department credit card and vacation time as a reward, and he announces the continuation of the geriatric center project, much to Tae-ho’s dismay.

Ji-hong tells Dal’s father that he needs an MRI to assess the exact cause of Dal’s walking abnormality, and suddenly older brother Hae frantically says that he has to go to the bathroom. His father tries to calm him down, but it’s an emergency and Hae runs out. Dal’s father asks if the MRI is covered under insurance, and Ji-hong clarifies that the costs will be covered if the disease is identified after the scan.

As Hae runs in the hallway, he bumps into Seo-woo and falls. She helps him up and directs him to the bathroom, and he runs off, dropping his phone behind him. Seo-woo waits for him outside the bathroom and hands giggly Hae his phone. She takes his hand to walk him back, and he continues to giggle as he compliments her: “You’re pretty.” Seo-woo admits that she’s been needing some affirmation recently.

Seo-woo asks Hae if he always laughs and giggles this much, and he says yes but adds that it also makes him feel sad. He explains, “My name is Hae (sun), and my brother’s name is Dal (moon). Dal is sick, but I still laugh. I feel sorry because I laugh even when he’s sick.” Then, he proceeds to laugh more.

His father calls for him, and Hae runs to him as he giggles. Seo-woo looks at the child strangely and beckons Yoon-do towards her. He seems reluctant to approach her, given their rocky relationship, but Seo-woo just shares her suspicions about Hae’s behavior. She approaches Hae’s father and tells him that she suspects Hae’s laughing to be associated with a disease. Yoon-do agrees that it could be a gelastic seizure and recommends that Hae get more tests.

Myung-hoon walks through the hospital preaching to his entourage and stops when he sees their hospital in the news for unfair hiring practices. The hospital seems to be undergoing investigation for nepotism, and Myung-hoon erupts with anger, smashing the phone in his office (Nam Gyu-man style).

Kang-soo receives a call from a producer of a documentary show, looking to interview the inspiration for the main character of his webtoon. She insists that this heroine with a difficult past becoming a successful doctor fits with her show’s concept perfectly. Kang-soo says that this doctor wouldn’t be interested and tells the producer to appreciate the webtoon as it is and leave it at that. Even after shutting the producer down, Kang-soo worries what will happen if Hye-jung discovers the webtoon that’s all about her.

Hye-jung walks down the hall on the other side of Ji-hong and signals him to go eat lunch together, but she’s intercepted by Joong-dae and Kang-soo. They suggest going to the cafeteria together, and Hye-jung scolds them for wasting precious time. That scares them off easily, though Hye-jung looks apologetic. She texts Ji-hong that it’s so difficult to eat together, and he responds with his signature puppy emoticon telling her to cheer up.

She signals him again to meet at the cafeteria, and Ji-hong blows a kiss from the other side. Giddy and embarrassed, Hye-jung starts to run off and Ji-hong mirrors her. She tries to get herself together, but she’s smiling like a fool.

Ji-hong grabs a table at the cafeteria, only to be called over by Pa-ran and In-joo at the next table. He’s clearly disappointed but calls over a reluctant Hye-jung to their table when she arrives. Pa-ran senses that they just interrupted the two from sharing a meal together, and Ji-hong confirms his suspicion. Then, he proceeds to introduce Hye-jung to them as his girlfriend. And Hye-jung reciprocates by introducing herself as Ji-hong’s girlfriend. Omo.

In-joo and Pa-ran tease them, saying that they’re going through their honeymoon phase now and then it’s all downhill from here. But In-joo sincerely congratulates them, especially Ji-hong at his age. They promise to keep their secret, and Pa-ran teases them more by making kissy faces, before they high-five each other for being great friends.

Director Jin bursts into Myung-hoon’s office, angered by the bad press surrounding the hospital. A resentful former employee must have reported this, but Myung-hoon assures his father that the prosecutor on the case is a patient of their hospital, so the damage will be minimal.

The hospital scandal seems to be affecting the doctors too — Kyung-joon keeps getting comments from patients about doctors being hired through nepotism. Nurse Su-jin says that she’s heard those comments directed to her as well. She brings up the possibility of Kang-soo’s webtoon turning into a book, and Young-kook says that they should get on Kang-soo’s good side in case he makes it big. So Kyung-joon makes Joong-dae do all the tedious check-ups. Aww, poor Joong-dae.

Yoon-do spots a malformation in Hae’s brain scans and confirms that he has a gelastic seizure. He compliments Seo-woo for recognizing the symptoms, and she notes that he’s already complimented her twice today. Yoon-do admits that she’s becoming a little pitiful, but Seo-woo knows that pity isn’t love. Yoon-do asks if she still likes him, so she asks if he still likes Hye-jung. He laughs and acknowledges that she knows his weakness.

Seo-woo tells Yoon-do that Hae’s brother is a patient of Ji-hong’s, and he tells her to call him. Seo-woo then looks at him earnestly and confesses that she detests him but likes him a lot. He presumes that she likes him because of his desirable circumstances, but Seo-woo explains that at first, that was the case. It was a change from what she’d experienced with suitors who liked her for her position. Yoon-do advises her to consider whether her feelings for him are love or reassurance.

Seo-woo asks what the difference is, and Yoon-do tells her that having confidence in a person and loving a person are different. Even without confidence, you can make it to the end with love. She finds this too reckless, but Yoon-do says you love because it’s reckless.

As In-joo and Pa-ran advise our lovebirds on their workplace romance, Hye-jung gets a call from Seo-woo about their patient. They’ll need to meet together to discuss the treatment options for the brothers, so Ji-hong and Hye-jung head out. Kang-soo runs towards them and tells Hye-jung that he has something to tell her alone, and Ji-hong teases her that it must be nice, implying that everyone has a crush on her. He leaves with a grin, saying that trust is important.

Kang-soo makes Hye-jung promise not to kill him and then shows her the webtoon. She’s not too fond of how her character looks, but she’s mostly irked by how he used her story without permission. He tries to point out the pros and says that he could make her into a star, but she orders him to keep her identity hidden from these producers.

Hye-jung enters the office, and Ji-hong immediately stands up for her to take a seat. Both Yoon-do and Seo-woo sense something different with these two, but Ji-hong claims that they’re just diagnosing their patient. Ji-hong tells Hye-jung to relay the diagnosis to the father, since she’ll be operating on the patient. She smiles widely as she agrees to do so, and Yoon-do looks at them with sad envy.

Hye-jung tells Dal’s father that they need to remove the tumor in Dal’s brain before it further debilitates his motor functions. Dal’s father understands the urgency of the surgery, but he worries about the cost. He’s a single father, and with both of his sons in need of medical care, it’s likely to be a financial burden. Hye-jung tells him to have both his sons admitted to the hospital and says that she’ll talk to the social work office about the costs. He thanks her and moves on to Yoon-do’s office for his consultation for Hae.

Yoon-do tells the boys’ father that Hae also needs surgery to remove a gelastic tumor that’s affecting his behavior. Dad didn’t realize that Hae’s laughing was an expression of pain, but Seo-woo says that he shouldn’t feel guilty, since a gelastic seizure isn’t easy to recognize. Yoon-do recommends treatment as soon as possible, since this tumor may affect Hae’s development, but Hae’s father knows that it’s not financially feasible. He decides to get Dal’s surgery done first, and then he’ll reconsider Hae’s treatment.

Hae and Dal’s father calls all of his contacts, asking to borrow money for the surgeries because loans alone can’t cover the cost. He tears up as he watches his playful young sons, unaware of the burdens their father carries.

Myung-hoon meets with Tae-ho and demands some plans to repair their hospital’s image. The PR director enters the office and informs Myung-hoon that there’s an offer from a TV show to cast Hye-jung because of her fame from Kang-soo’s webtoon. Myung-hoon likes the idea and orders Tae-ho to persuade her into taking this gig.

Seo-woo and Young-kook take a coffee break on a bench outside, and he shares his suspicions about Ji-hong and Hye-jung dating. Seo-woo doesn’t seem to care and says that she’s not trying to compete with Hye-jung anymore, since she’ll lose anyway. Young-kook says that Hye-jung is likable and adaptable, saying that she had to see Hye-jung at their staff dinner. He takes out his phone to show her a video, and they bump heads as they try to look at the screen. They stare at each other for a moment, and Young-kook’s eyes linger on her as she watches the video. Oooh, this boy’s got a crush.

Seo-woo wonders how Hye-jung became this way, and Young-kook affirms that Seo-woo is prettier. She takes that as a friendly compliment (though it seemed more sincere) and proceeds to answer a call from her father. He tells Seo-woo to bring Hye-jung to meet him, and that seems to deflate Seo-woo’s mood once again.

Hye-jung’s father drops by the hospital to drop off food from his restaurant, and Ji-hong greets him. Ji-hong asks if he remembers him and invites Hye-jung’s father to his office. Hye-jung’s father finally remembers him from Grandma’s house, and Ji-hong also reveals that he was Hye-jung’s homeroom teacher. Ji-hong asks Hye-jung’s father if he called his daughter, but he says that Hye-jung doesn’t like him and would probably avoid him.

Hye-jung receives a call from her father, and as expected, she rejects the call. Then, she receives a call from an unknown number. It’s the secretary summoning her to meet with Myung-hoon.

Hye-jung and Seo-woo meet with Myung-hoon, who says that Seo-woo lacks social adaptability and insists that the two should become friends. They remain silent, but Myung-hoon bulldozes on and suggests that Hye-jung take the offer to appear on TV. She says she already refused the offer, but Myung-hoon demands that she should take it to help the hospital during hard times. He says that he would have Seo-woo do it, but she’s not qualified for the appearance. Ouch.

As they leave the office, Seo-woo tells Hye-jung that this is how she lives. She doesn’t gain everything easily, as Hye-jung had once argued. She walks away, and Hye-jung looks regretful.

Ji-hong waits for Hye-jung in the corridor and suggests that she take him home this time. She likes his suggestion and says that it lifted her spirits instantly to see him. She explains that she just met with Seo-woo and Myung-hoon and says, “A person’s life looks good from afar. Up close, it’s cruel.” He asks if she still wants to enter his life, even with this realization, and she’s determined to do so.

Hye-jung opens the passenger door to her car, and Ji-hong bows in honor of her chivalrous gesture. As they drive home, Ji-hong extends his hand outside the window, and Hye-jung narrates with anticipation: “This adventure into another person’s life has begun.”

Yoon-do pulls up to his apartment complex, and Seo-woo is there waiting for him. She’s crying and admits to Yoon-do that she tries to resist but keeps yearning for him when something difficult happens. She hugs him and asks why they can’t be together — they get along and know each other well, after all. He pulls her away and clarifies that it won’t work for him.

Seo-woo insists that she’s just the right height for him. He laughs as he acknowledges this and tells her to head home, since the neighbors could see them. He continues by explaining that there are two options for people like them: to obey their parents’ wishes or disobey them. Seo-woo can’t disobey her parents, but she also can’t meet their expectations. Yoon-do says that it’s a selfish desire to demand others to meet your expectations, and tells Seo-woo to live outside of her parents’ shadows. He heads inside and leaves her alone to cry.

Joong-dae happily puts together rice balls, but he’s interrupted by Kyung-joon, who scolds him for not taking proper care of a patient. Joong-dae insists that he ordered the necessary CT scans, but Kyung-joon scolds him anyway for his miscommunication. Tired of being the punching bag, Joong-dae grabs a fistful of rice and storms out of the room. Kang-soo says that Kyung-joon was a little harsh, but Kyung-joon says that he’s tough so that they don’t make serious mistakes in the future.

Unhappy Joong-dae enters Soon-hee’s bar and orders drinks alone. He asks a favor from her, that she not let any of his staff know that he’s here. He takes a swig of his beer and cries to himself.

In-joo walks into Yoon-do’s house just as he comes out of the shower and makes herself at home. She says she’s comfortable here and warns Yoon-do not to fall for her, claiming that she has a pretty colorful backstory herself. He calls her “aunt” again and assures her that he won’t. Yoon-do is flabbergasted and even more so when his uncle Pa-ran enters the house. In-joo and Pa-ran enjoy hanging out at Yoon-do’s place since he’s so fun to tease, and they fist-bump in solidarity.

Hye-jung parks her car, and Ji-hong keeps his seatbelt on so that she can unbuckle it for him. She gets close to undo the seatbelt but springs back when she realizes their proximity. He undoes the seatbelt himself and baits Hye-jung with his claw machine. She can’t resist the offer, so she joins him inside.

Hye-jung successfully navigates the claw machine, and Ji-hong explains that he wanted a claw machine to compensate for his unfulfilled childhood. Hye-jung says she probably needs something like this, and Ji-hong admits that he met her father earlier that day. She flatly states that she doesn’t like her father and says that she doesn’t want to make amends. He asks if it’s okay for him to meet her father, and he explains that he misses Grandma’s cooking and wants to go to the restaurant.

Hye-jung admits that she misses Grandma’s cooking as well and confesses that she doesn’t cook because she’s afraid that she might be good at it. That would remind her of Grandma, and thinking about Grandma would make her cry. As she tears up, Ji-hong says that he doesn’t know what to do in this situation, and Hye-jung appreciates his honesty. She says that she’ll teach him and wraps his arms around her. Ji-hong comforts her in a warm embrace.

The next morning, Dal’s father assures the boys that surgery is not scary. Hae laughs, and this time his father looks at him with a better understanding. Ji-hong enters the room and shakes Dal’s hand before they head into surgery.

In the surgery, Ji-hong allows Hye-jung to prepare deeper into the brain before starting the official procedure. As he begins to remove the tumor, Hye-jung warns him about the nearby areas that could result in other behavioral deficits. Suddenly, the BAEP machine shows unstable electrical signals and Ji-hong orders his surgery team to take all hands off. He closes his eyes and waits for a moment before checking the signals again. They’re back to normal, and Ji-hong proceeds with the surgery. He gives Hye-jung a quick wink and asks if he’s good. She responds that he is very much so.

Ji-hong exits the surgery and tells Dal’s father that it went well. Ji-hong looks to Hae, who has fallen asleep while waiting, but continues to laugh in his sleep.

Tae-ho meets with Hye-jung and admits that he’s feeling pressure from the higher-ups to persuade her into participating in the TV show. Since Tae-ho is requesting this, she easily decides to follow his wishes. She claims that she has clear likes and dislikes, even with people, and Tae-ho seems pleasantly surprised at her easy concession.

After her meeting, Hye-jung finds Ji-hong outside and leans on him in exhaustion. He feeds her his coffee and offers to cook whatever she wants for dinner. They go to the grocery store and Hye-jung throws in whatever she wants as Ji-hong puts back some of the food. He pretends to feed her a sample before putting it into his own mouth and flinches a little too much at Hye-jung’s mock-hitting fist.

At home, Ji-hong cooks as Hye-jung watches, enamored. He brings over the soup, and Hye-jung gives it a taste. She recognizes it, takes another spoonful, and asks where Ji-hong bought it — it tastes just like Grandma’s cooking.

He tells her that it’s from Granny’s Restaurant, aka her dad’s restaurant, and Hye-jung puts down her spoon. She looks at Ji-hong and narrates: “Entering the other person’s life is the start of dating. Conversely, it’s also welcoming the other person into your own life. It seems like an amicable welcome will be difficult.”

COMMENTS

This romance has reached a nice balance, which is something I wasn’t expecting, given the inherent power imbalance between these two. While Ji-hong is still clearly the older and wiser doctor, his relationship with Hye-jung doesn’t necessarily reflect that teacher-student dynamic anymore. They’re starting from scratch, and I’m appreciating the honesty in their growth together. I enjoyed the giddiness throughout this episode (as proven through my collection of screencaps), but that much romance means that we have to compensate with some unfavorable realities. Ah yes, the time has come for this relationship to be a little more real. That’s not to say that the romance in this episode wasn’t real. It was real, fun, and very cute.

I only half-joke that Seo-woo is running around the inferiority circle of doom because she does seem to be making some progress in figuring out herself outside of her parents’ expectations, but she quickly reverts back to digging herself deeper into her self-loathing hole at a moment’s notice. Yoon-do really dropped the mic with all the truths he told Seo-woo, but I don’t know how well her sensitive ego can take his bluntness. It’s a frustrating circle of doom because everything Yoon-do says is the simple truth but Seo-woo just doesn’t know how to take it. And I can’t hate Seo-woo entirely because we’ve gotten front-row seats to her ego being smashed by her father. We’ve seen the cruelty that Hye-jung just realized after witnessing Seo-woo’s life up close, and I think I just need to be patient with Seo-woo’s character. I’m constantly ambivalent about her, but I want to like her a little more.

I loved Namgoong Min’s cameo as a single father, and I’m amazed that I believe his acting despite all the memorable characters he’s taken on recently. It helped that his cameo role had a lot of pathos with those adorable sons who had the cutest matching names, who both needed brain surgery. But I’ll have to admit that I couldn’t help but think back to crazy eyes Namgoong Min when Myung-hoon (the actor also worked with Namgoong Min in that show, remember?) broke his phone in his anger fit. I’m hoping that was a tribute to the crazy character and his anger management problems.

The popularity of this show in Korea doesn’t make too much sense to me, but I appreciate it for what it is. Personally, I’m a big fan of the cast and the show’s execution. I love the chemistry of the cast as a whole, even though we only get bits and pieces of our side characters. The writing of the show isn’t incredible, but I do think it challenges some of the norms with drama heroines. Love her or hate her, Park Shin-hye is the real star of the show. She kind of gets treated like Hye-jung in real life — a lot of people love her, those who linger in the past don’t like her, and some hate her because everyone loves her. It’s a whole mixed of bag of reactions that are as different as night and day, sun and moon, Hae and Dal.

I don't know why people are complaining about boring plot etc etc. I wonder if they understand what the drama is about. If I don't like a drama, I will just stop watching and not even bother to read the recap, let alone bother to leave a comment.

I love this drama. It's heartwarming and gives nuggets of life which I can resonate with. I love the entire cast, and of course the great acting and powerful chemistry from KRW and PSH.

The romance may seem ordinary but one can't deny that KRW and PSH make ordinary things seem so much cuter and heart fluttery.

The drama is about Yoo Hye Jung. This is a human growth and emotion drama. I appreciate every episode. If I were to go for plot or thrill, there are other dramas ongoing like W which I enjoy too. Nonetheless, Doctors warm my heart like no other.

No need to take critiques so seriously. You can't expect every comment section to be a lovefest. If you want a preaching to the choir section with nothing but praise.............go to a fan page for the show

What Al said. Just because you like the drama doesn't mean everyone else is going to like it. Liking something is purely subjective and people can have their opinions on whether or not they like it. I honestly think it's great that you enjoy the drama.

I second about the PSH part. She's kinda hit and miss for me too. I don't love her but I also don't hate her.

Oh thank you recapper for finally putting into words what I've been feeling about Seo Woo all this time. I want to like her. I want her to listen to her tiny conscience (there's always that expression on her face when you know a part of her wants to break free of her inferiority complex) and do the right thing. She reminds me of that bad girl character in Sassy Go Go whose resolution in that storyline was perhaps one of the few unsatisfactory things I felt about that series. Seo Woo is finally seeming to come to her senses in 13 (we've had hints but they finally seem to hit home). I really want this to continue. I really want Seo Woo to redeem herself and break free of her awful family's influence.

Personally, I find the credibility of the show to be in question.

Yoo Hye-jung is cute, but there is NO way on Earth - NO WAY - that any man would turn down Seo-Woo for Yoo Hye-jung. If a man did pick Yoo Hye-jung, he would need to have his head examined by a neurologist.

Seo-woo is one of those rare kind of woman is beautiful AND cute AND sexy.

Ummm...I think you're the one that needs to get checked by a neurologist. Lol. It's not always about looks. Sure Seo Woo is extremely gorgeous, but her personality is not the most attractive. Looks are important, but if your personality doesn't match up, it won't work.

And I find it funny that you judge the show's credibility on the simple fact that you feel Seo Woo is way prettier than Hye Jung and that Seo Woo should be on top. Seriously can't wrap my head around that logic.

It was meant in jest, I don't seriously think someone should be examined by a neurologist for preferring Yoo Hye-jung. Its called an exaggeration.

There is something called personality.
Looks are not everything.

And I find both women beautiful in their OWN way.

But in real life PSH is more popular than the woman playing Seo-Woo is too.

Seo-woo comes off as desperate and needy. Domineering men tend to like that, but that's so they can control and manipulate. Hye-jung doesn't seem to need them, so any acceptance of them is because she wants them. That's a challenge. In the immortal words of 2Pac, men usually "don't want it, if it's that easy."

Real life popularity for these actresses is a different matter which I attribute more to marketing than anything else.

Hye-jung's personality seems very cold, almost aloof. Yeah, she doesn't need people, and that is great to be independent and self reliant - but being aloof isn't necessary.

Furthermore, most people (men and women) do need other people - for companionship at least. That isn't a weakness. Granted there are hermits who need no other people, and more power to them.

And as for being "a challenge". That CAN be fun at first, but eventually it gets tiring. In reality, eventually you want to just relax - not get in a rut, but not have a constant challenge - that leads to unhappiness.

See-woo is smart, accomplished - she just wants acceptance. She isn't as confident as Hye-jung, nothing wrong with that.

By your logic, the actress playing Seo-woo should be the lead of the show and more popular that PSH, that's not the case. That it isn't the case in real-life either would seem to make PSH desirability on the show credible.

HJ personality doesn't seem cold or aloof to me.

No person is an island, true; however, people do not "need" other people to validate their worth as a human being.

HJ has accepted JH feelings, so she wasn't a constant challenge. She also told him early on that she was interested. And told YD early on that she wasn't interested in him.

People who need the acceptance, approval, and constant assurance from others to feel good about themselves are burdensome. Burdens are to be avoided.

HJ's character is the "cool girl." The "cool girl" is the hot chick these days. Cool, pretty chick > Emotionally needy, hot chick

0

@Al Hahah I get what you mean.. God, Seo Woo aka Lee Sung Kyung Is frea*kin attractive woman.. way more attractive than PSH. And definitely more talent in acting departement. PSH is just so lifeless in this drama I can't even. Sorry PSH fans

Well, that's your opinion. There must be a reason then why PSH has been in the industry for nearly 15 yrs after the drama stairways to heaven. Sole popularity can't bring audience, you gotta have solid acting too you know, though I do think that PSH (or her agency) should pick better roles and projects for dramas (her in movies and short films are way better then some of her dramas)

Guess what? It's your opinion and the entire Korea and million people out there would disagree.
I remember people said Krystal was talented than PSH during Heirs but soon shut up when she had her own drama, When LSK can lead her own drama successfully like PSH you can claim she is more talented than her
She is lifeless but she is put next to the Alist actress from the older generalization now with this performance
You don't have to appreciate her when her entire country does.

Are you serious? Even girls fall for YHJ?
You might not think she is pretty but personality >>>> outer beauty
SW's known to be pretty and perfect outside but she is far from it
Just like the real PSH, there are so many fallen for her even some don't see her appeal. It's her personality that make her shine

Why the doctors in this drama are always so pretty and fashionable all the time ? especially PSH character. I can't seem to get it! also LSK!

This may sound some minor thing and betty on my side to make it bothers me since the actress is not the one who is responsible about the way she dresses herself (maybe!)

But seriously it takes a lot of the creditability form her character. Doctors are wealthy BUT they also don't have time.

She seems so artificial, I can't believe in a doctor who is always so ready to walk on a red carpet! This is not real. I get that doctors are also people, therefore they may have some who are interested on fashion but surely they don't have the time to be this amazing all the time!
you want to advertise and you can't help it, that's ok! but tone it down alittle bit!
I'm watching now just to see what she wears, which is kinda funny...

You know she is not a resident, right? When my mum finished her residency and became a consultant, her schedule REALLY freed up. Ad her fashion multiplied like a thousand times. It is actually very believable to me, because I remember my mum taking her time every morning to make sure she looked fabulous. The residents see most of the patients. Only the very important or the very serious patients see doctors higher up the rank.

You're making a big and false generalization.

Yes in residency its hard to look nice. But if you think life outside of residency or fellowship is easy, you're delusional.

Maybe your mom practiced in a relaxed specialty - but there are many others like Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, any of the surgical specialties where attendings work just as hard if not more so than in residency.

And NO, "only the very important or the very serious patients see doctors higher up the rank" - that is FALSE. Attendings see ALL the patients - or that is malpractice.

And believe it or not, culture mixes with stuff.

@dontknow and @erinmide go go

I think just like there are all kinds of people, there are all kinds of doctors. Some like to dress up, some don't. It doesn't exactly matter how busy you are, it's a matter of priorities. Some people will sacrifice an extra 30 min of sleep to do their make up. Some people, like me, slap on some in the car on the way to work because no one sees me behind my surgical mask, and I really can't be bothered to even put any on when I'm working at night.

Of course usually not every doctor is gorgeous looking but this show isn't exactly a gritty show about medical realism, it's a feel good show about the relationships and growth between a group of people- who happen to work in a hospital. Lol. So yeah.

But @erinmide go go you are wrong about the seniors only seeing the sickest and the important patients. There is ALWAYS a senior doctor in charge of every patient, and even at night they can be called down if they are needed. If not usually the patients are seen the next day during rounds.

The doctors in doctors don't wear high heels all the time. As far as I remember Hye-jeong wears flat shoes during the operations.

In the hospital where I worked (as a medical assistant, not as a doctor) it depended on the doctor. Some wore flat shoes, some wore shoes with small heels, some with high heels and the attending doctor of the radiology usually wore over 10 cm stiletto heels.

Required fields are marked *

Some do, and some don't. As long as it doesn't interfere with your work, nobody really cares about your footwear. Most don't because heels are generally more uncomfortable than flats, but I have a doctor friend who lives in heels and she finds them more comfy than flats. She runs around fine, so no one cares.

In the operating theatre it's different tho- no heels, most wear rubber boots or clogs or crocs that cover the feet completely- to prevent them from being splashed by blood/body fluids during surgery.

I agree! I can't wrap my head around the fact that they wear stiletto walking around the hospital. Those are so freaking uncomfortable when you are in it for a few hours and we are talking about the women walking for hours on end around the ward checking on patients.

Talking about potential hazardous incidents when they slip and fall or when they need to attend to emergency cases.

Am I the only one who notices the stilettos? It's just a minor detail and annoys me nonetheless.

@dontknow

Really, the clothes looked that extravagant? They were just plain, casual, loose-fitting business clothes. But i get it, her wearing it might have made the clothes worth valuable to the viewers. Funny, for me.. PSH's makeup to costumes were more believable as a doctor. I love it that she always keeps her makeup natural. For me, Its LSK who was not believable as a doctor from day 1. One day when she was wearing micro shots,i even wondered if doctors in their country wear such clothes to their workplace and also considering it is a hospital. Also, her dresses from the start and thick lipstick was so distracting in the first few episodes gave me a hard time to believe that she is playing as a doctor. But i refrained from mentioning it cause most of it, from choosing the dress to makeup are coordi's responsibility.

You do make it sound like as if the actress is wantedly doing it, which is not the case. Also,if the sponsors ask them to wear, they have to. There is no other go as these sponsors are funding the drama. I am sure you know that.

Speaking from experience when I got hospitalized for more than a week then had to come back for consulting/check ups every week to my doctor:

-Consultant doctor - Prof. Dr. always wore formal clothes, with high heels. I guess this is because I saw her mostly during the follow up check ups and even when I was admitted, I was the one going to her office. She doesn't need to walk around so much and even if she does it is only to make a quick round or to see outpatients.

-Attending and on-duty doctors also wore formal clothes but really differ in terms of their shoes according to their personalities. Some wore kitten heels while the others wore flats. Just like some wore make up and others didn't.

-Surgery and emergency always wore runners/rubber shoes, I am assuming this is for obvious convenience, safety and efficiency reasons.

Having said all that, since we are watching a drama - people tend to be prettier than usual. After all, as viewers (especially to have mass appeal), we tend to gravitate towards characters or scenery that are more aesthetically pleasing in a conventional way. In this regard, doctors is not an isolated case, mainstream dramas ALWAYS have beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes. For example:

1. drama candy who is supposed to be the poorest of the poor but never repeats clothes and is still fashionable/trendy with her outfits;

2. the girl sidekick (female lead's bestfriend) having a seemingly uniform hairstyle of pigtails and childish accessories

3. high power executives wearing colourful, textured suits instead of the real-life usually preferred colour of black and other basic colours.

There are exceptions of course, like Misaeng that is more realistic (hits too close to home, personally) or Ma Dong Seok in Squad looking really like your average civil officer.

I honestly don't get bothered by the fashion. I think I even appreciate it that they look so good and yet such geniuses having 100% operation success rate so far. haha But it is personal preference, just as how I appreciate the fashion in The Good Wife.

At the risk of sounding really cheesy, I feel like it is heightened realism and aspirational stories that make TV the magical black box that it is.

I actually saw that drama after Beautiful mind's fans recommending it to me in a translation blog. And after watching it, i felt that, it also has its own flaws from lead character's development and the lack of chemistry between the leads and i personally disliked female lead's acting/character. Near the end, the plot became even too rushed. It took me a while to sympathize with lee young oh character. It was just too overhyped by inetz is what i felt.

Medical dramas are usually character driven. If there's a plot, it is probably some nefarious scheme by the powers that be a.k.a hospital senior management or board and carried out by evil doctors, ha. I think Good Doctor was like that and so was Beautiful Mind.

I don't know about this drama since I have stopped watching it and skimming recaps only. One thing I noticed is that the comments don't discuss in depth the plot(s) or characters(except how hateful Seo Woo is). My impression is that the medical cases aren't that interesting(save for this week's. Yeah for NGM!) nor do they contribute much to the characters' growth.

Good Doctor and Beautiful Mind were not centered on romance between the two leads so that could be the reason why Doctors is different. In the case of Doctors, I guess viewers watch for the romance and chemistry between PSH and KRW. I read mostly negative things about everything else from plot to character growth to unbelievable side characters.

Personally I don't find medical dramas exciting on their own. Some bore me to tears. There must be something special to draw viewers' attention. Good Doctor had Park Si On, BM had Lee Young Oh and Doctors have Hye Jung and Ji Hong. Different strokes for different folks :)

I bet some don't even watch. Just here to complain. Either butthurt over the popularity of the drama(which many are) or their dislike for either one of the leads, basically bitter about their fav not getting this hype or popularity. The second one seems to be the blatant truth in many cases.

Not all the dramas have to be educational, unique with its plot. "Doctors" is a simple humane drama, that's what it has been said from day 1. Not rocket science. They can keep complaining and downgrading it with petty reasons like why the doctors are so fashionable.. duh.. Doctors are humans too. They have a life outside .Sorry for dressing up nicely./s

To read recaps and state my opinion.

And I don't hate nor love this drama and as a human being I can state this.

And as I remember in some other recaps people were commenting on how the people recap aren't really into this drama either.

It's my right to state my opinion especially since I said my reason and I was not trying to be rude.

Not everyone is going to like something or dislike something.

I like going to a movie review and seeing reviews on why they hate a movie or why they like it.

I'm not really looking forward to their plot story anymore, right now I'm watching this drama for the feels, AND my own pleasure to guess the final pairings at the end of this drama.
Up until episode 14, I'm sure the pairings are going to be like this :
Hye Jung - Ji Hong
Yoon Do - In Joo
Seo Woo - Young Gook
Kang Soo - The Nurse
Soon Hee - Joong Dae

Everyone gets their own couple ! Yeay !
Oh, wait.. how about uncle Pa Ran?

Young Gook seems like a nice guy, but he is nerdy looking. If got Seo Woo to be his girlfriend - fiance - wife then WOW he would definitely be reaching out of his league.

My only concern with those mismatch pairings is if she is settling for him and genuinely loves him or not?

Personally, I'd rather be with a woman who was less conventionally hot but genuinely was in love with me/not settling vs the super hot woman who was settling for me.

Seo-Woo for me is a character that has a wonderful actress portraying it with scarce material which is why I find her interesting or else with a bad actress, it would be unbearable. I especially like Lee Sung Kyung's expressions with her eyes. She doesn't say or react much too anything but her eyes speak volume. YD is cutting her off for her own good but that was hard to watch for me. YG can be there for her if she is willing to open her eyes beyond her world which rotates around living up to certain standards and matching them. I hope we can see her embrace herself and not let people belittle her. Her dad was pathetic. He isn't half the doctor SW is.

I agree with the recapper in that I don't quite understand the ratings in Korea re: why this is so successful. But then I didn't understand it for DOTS either. I think it has to do with the power of the stars, the fact that romance dramas are quite popular (along with the revenge dramas...always with the revenge!). In particular, I don't see as many comments on KRW as I saw for SJK in DOTS in the DB's threads, but in Korea, I think KRW is really quite a big star and respected for his acting. I think he is a huge part of the key to the success of this drama, whether people thought the first episodes were a little sketchy or not with the whole teacher/student situation. Yes, I know a lot of people know this here, but there's always the buzz about the flower boys, and sometimes I don't see it for KRW.

I'm having a pretty good time watching the drama, flaws and all. I would imagine most people still watching (I'm through episode 14) are still enjoying it at some level or why bother at this point. It's just a breezy fun drama even with the angsty hospital stories.

KRW may not be a hallyu star unlike SJK, but I think he is a well respected actor. I always read blogs that translate k-netizen's comments. Judging from k-netizen's comments, I can see that korean viewers respect him from his acting. Especially for his well received performance in Punch last year. In fact, korean viewers were dissapointed that KRW didn't receive a proper appreciation and nominated for Daesang award during SBS awards last year.

KRW may not be well known among hallyu fans and he is not a flower boy type unlike other hallyu stars, but he is well known among those who has been watching k-dramas for more than 10 years. Those who are still new to k-dramas especially young viewers may not know him

And its main protagonists' emotional growth (I've got high hopes for Seo Woo!) is 'the plot' basically.
I believe a huge part of this drama's success atleast in South Korea is the chemistry of the cast, just look at the comments in for example Naver (if you know korean or can find translations).

The mod who deleted your comment had reason to - it goes against the commenting policy, and the main thing the mods encourage is for everyone to be civil. That includes not attacking commenters for what they think. Saying that you prefer Seo Woo over Hye Jung is fine - heck, I can sympathize with her a bit - but please understand that other people, including the mods, would prefer to not be attacked for their views or their preference.

When Beautiful GongShim started, I couldn't help but being wary of Anh Dan Tae (the character, not the actor). I kept wondering if he had a villain side to him.

Then, I could only see Anh Dan Tae.

Then, when Namgoong Min showed up in this episode as a delivery man, I could only think of him as Dan Tae.

Then, as the story progressed, I could only see a single father in pain for his sons and financial troubles. I've completely forgotten about Dan Tae.

All this to say how great of an actor, Namgoong Min is...
His cameo made this episode (and the next one) much more interesting.

There's just something about this show that I really enjoy. It's not terribly exciting, like PU 38 or W, but something about it seems to make me want to continue watching.

Like you said, "The popularity of this show in Korea doesn’t make too much sense to me, but I appreciate it for what it is. Personally, I’m a big fan of the cast and the show’s execution."

I agree! I think the cast reels me back in every time I'm feeling a bit bored. KRW is just making me feel the relationship between them (in all honesty, this episode and ep14 made me go #foreveralone when they had their moments). Haha. And I think I enjoy the fact that everyone gets screen time and story build-up! PSH has never been a favorite actress of mine (acting-wise), but she's grown so much in this role that I'm just hoping that her growth continues with every new role she gets!

PU 38, W, Doctors!!

A drama doesn't have to be high-intensity, critically acclaimed, or really well written to be successful.

Obviously, Doctors isn't any of those things. But it hits the buttons that make a lot of people happy - low-stakes drama, a cute romance, a beautiful cast, etc. I don't watch Doctors so that I can provide thorough analysis of the plot and acting ability of the cast. I watch Doctors because the romance makes me smile, the patient scenarios make me cry, and KRW has suddenly turned into boyfriend goals.

Doctors is simple and sweet, and that's all I'm asking of it, so while I understand the criticism, I really don't think it matters to most people.

Episode 13 was a fun episode with swoon-worthy otp moments. Hyejung is the real oppa in the relationship. Haha.. Its like the roles are reversed. Also,I feel like she is more matured than jihong at many instances. Anyways.. Its refreshing to see a genuine, nice male lead and a strong, independent, straight forward female lead for a change from the typical kdrama troope of arrogant jerk male lead and naive,dumb,air-headed female lead. And what's with all the sudden random pairings lol.I want in joo with pa ran,not yoon do. So seo woo might end up with young guk from the looks of it,i originally wanted soon hee with kang soo but guess the writer wants it differently. So soon hee with jeong dae and kang soo with nurse. Lol yoon do,forever solo. Anyways,i want a wedding,i mean jihong and hyejung's wedding at the end of the drama. Please give us writer-nim. I loved the kids who cameo-ed.I wasn't much impressed by nam goong min's performance in the 13th episode but he was better in the 14th episode.

Anyways.. Its always the ppl who want to complain fills up the comment section than the ones who are enjoying. There are actually many people who are enjoying but since the reviews are posted few days after the drama aired, many don't come here to comment. Not all the dramas have to be challenging, educational, unique with its plot. Some times you just need a slice of life drama which is character driven to emotionally connect and enjoy the journey. Besides, none of us are contributing to the success of the drama may it positive or negative. At the end of the day,it doesn't really matter what we think. If one feel its not worth watching, then its better to drop than to look for any opportunity to complain all the time.

Im not liking the chief resident - no matter how you put it, it is still bullying and bordering into physical violence with the younger residents.

I really do not like her family..at all. They were horrible to her as a child and a young woman!! They want to make amends now that she is a doctor?! I say hell no!

Her father dumped her A LONG TIME AGO! I'm no parent in reality, but I really don't care for Hyejung's family; especially her stepmother. So what if the step sister is nice, so what. They spent all those years nurturing the stepsister and dumped Hyejung.

I hope the write doesn't write it in that Ji hong helps Hyejung reconnect with her father. He/they don't deserve her forgiveness.

Anyway, just my angry 2 cents.
