Won Bin courted for remake of Still Life
by girlfriday
I feel like the longer Won Bin stays away from the silver screen, he becomes the great white whale of Chungmuro—that actor that nobody can ever catch, who used to star in movies, or so legend says. It’s already been six years since his last project, 2010’s hit thriller Ajusshi (The Man From Nowhere), and he’s been turning down offers ever since. There’s a flurry of excitement right now because he’s even considering a new project—a remake of the British movie Still Life, which his reps say is just one of many possible projects he’s considering. But this is Won Bin, so I think people are just excited that he hasn’t immediately turned it down.
Still Life is a contemplative human drama written and directed by Uberto Pasolini, that premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2013 and won a Best Director award in the Orizzonti category. It’s a quiet story about a man (played by Eddie Marsan) who works a civil service job taking care of the last funeral rites of people who die alone.
He seeks out family members or acquaintances of the deceased, strings together a life story to deliver the best eulogy that he can, and often is the only person attending these funerals. One day he’s told that his government department is about to be shut down, and he becomes obsessed with his final case. In his search to piece together an old man’s life, he meets a woman and begins to finally live his own life.
The original film got a range of mixed reviews from critics, though I can see why Won Bin would be interested in such a quirky, melancholy story. It’s described as hopeful, despite all the death, which I like the sound of. And it’s reportedly a film that really rides on the lead actor’s nuanced performance, so that makes me think there’s a real chance Won Bin would sign on.
For now, we wait and see. Still Life is still in early development, and hasn’t announced a production schedule.

This whole white whale of Won Bin is something i never truly understand tbh. He is not the only actor in Korea who choose to not taking any project in years. If i am not mistaken, Lee Young Ae is also absent from camera for even longer time. These two are arguably few of the biggest figure of Korean cinema, left limelight to create a family while still appear for CF and pictorial. I ask simply out of curiousity, but why only Won Bin who is urged to make comeback? Well, putting aside the fact that Lee Young Ae is now already choosing a project..

Why him? because he is one of few Korean film stars who are known in many other countries outside Korea like Lee Young Ae and who choose not to make new films. Lee Young Ae is very different because she like many other stars left to have kids, normal family life.
You cant tell her to not care about family life and Won Bin got married recently and just semiretired 6 years ago. Thats the weird part for a very acclaimed, famous actor.

They are very popular but they are not the biggest figure of Korean cinema. That's something I'd say about Director Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho.
There are many critically acclaimed actors in Chungmuro like Jeon Do-Yeon, Choi Min Shik, Song Kang Ho etc. who aren't just well known in Korea and Asia but in Hollywood and Cannes.

Yeah Park Chan Work, Bong Joon-Ho, Kim Ki Duk, the directors are most famous internationally in Korea but Won Bin is known along side Choi Min Sik, Song Kang Ho etc (he is biggest of them all because all the famous director films). Of course he hasnt done as many great films as those days but Man from Nowhere was big outside SK too.
There are not many on that list as you mention, i dont care about their Hollywood films. South Korean cinema is huge here even in Sweden art serious cinema.
Those great actors you mention work all the time, their acclaimed and we see them every year so there is no call for their comeback naturally.

Song Kang Ho, Choi Min Shik, Hwang Jung Min, Kim Yoon-Seok, Ha Jung Woo are the power-house actors of Chungmuro. They are well known for their raw talents and not because of who they work with. Won Bin is not at their level yet.

Did i say they are not strong actors who are big in their countries? Song Kang Ho is my fav. Didnt say anything at all about his talent but that he has starred in many of the internationally famous films from Korea in the last 10 years. He is the biggest name of korean actors internationally.
Choi Min Sik is my fav too and of course Won Bin hasnt done as many quality, acclaimed films as these two, he is younger too. Im not a big Won Bin fan i just meant i can see why they want him back.
Ha Jung Woo, Hwang Jung Min has done most their popular films in SK since Won Bins being gone, i dont think they are above his level and on Song Kang Ho, Min Sik level. Doing Berlin File, Man in Love, Veteran doesnt make them talent wise better than Won Bin.

Heh i meant veteran the film with Hwang Jung Min. I agree Won Bin isnt on the same level as Song Kang Ho, Choi Min Shik talent wise so far.
Ha Jung Woo i think are on the same level talent wise even if he has done more films. Hwang Jung Min i havent seen enough films of, meaning his most acclaimed roles.
I agree with you about the first two actor, who are better no matter their age but not the latter two names.

Ha Jung Woo is on his own level of awesomeness! He is the most sought after actor in the film industry for a reason.
It took a while for Hwang Jung Min to get the recognition that he deserved. Love the fact that his films has been very successful in the box-office and he doesn't just limit himself to critical acclaim films.

While I agree that Won Bin isn't on the level of the very best actors in Korea, he gets attention since he is one of the few "matinee idols" who can act (albeit, when he first started off - "Guns & Talks" and "Taeguki", he was so-so and had a tendency to overact at times) and pretty much all of his films have been hits.
That being said, probably also has to do w/ the fact that Won Bin isn't exactly a churning out works.
Has only done 4 films since 2001's G&T and w/ his last drama being in 2002.
Also doesn't appear on variety shows (to my knowledge) - so WB seems to be one of those reclusive celebs which in its own right, garners attention.

Because with Lee Young Ae, it was pretty clear she was leaving the industry to start a family and take care of her kids, and it was actually a surprise that she signed up to do Saimdang because a lot of people thought she retired entirely. With Won Bin, he's constantly on TV with his advertisement deals and there's a stream of he's considering his project! oh nvm it's not happening, what about that project! nope, nvm that too. if he were clear about not coming on screen for awhile people wouldn't look for him, but he's been "considering his next project" for the past five years with none actualized.

This has struck me funny as well. I don't know if acting is his passion or not, or if he burned out of the industry or not, or something else happened...who knows.
I guess he'll be back when and if he wants to. I've only ever seen him in Agusshi on Netflix a few years back. I could have done without some of the gore in that movie, but he did have a kick ass character and did well with it. Honestly, I didn't watch the movie for him. I had watched Queen of the Classroom and wanted to see which had a great cast of young actors including Kim Sae Ron who was fabulous as the little girl in the movie with Won Bin.

I feel like he takes the success of his movies a bit too far, by only appearing in CFs for long periods of time (obviously he should be given credit for his projects, but I feel like he's abusing(??) his popularity)

Weepy fox: I think I understand what you are saying and I also wanted to add in some more thoughts. He takes the success of his movies a bit too far? The man can do whatever he wants to do - he is not beholden to anybody. Who works at one job forever? Some teachers retire or take breaks, doctors do the same, etc etc. And then ride the perks of the reputation they created when they were working (some teachers substitute, some doctors consult, etc). He has the money and the privilege to say "I am going to step away a bit from this particular job and maybe try my hand at other things." If he did not do CFs or any TV work, people would still complain about how selfish he is. He can do no right, really.
I do not follow this actor and actually know very little about his acting work. I do find it interesting though that some people have an expectation of what he should do as an actor or semi-retired actor, when really it is his life, not theirs. And the various reasons used to judge actors like this who take a break - wow. Sometimes we all can do with more personal reflections on our ends before we make these types of judgements about others.

I think you are not being reasonable with your judgment of him. There's nothing wrong with taking a long break from films and doing some CFs over the years. Won Bin is earning an honest living and he doesn't owe anyone for endorsing products. His star power comes from talents, character, and appeal, none of which is lended to him by some pushy fans.
Just because his projects shot him to stardom doesn't mean he had to change the course of his career and let them dictate his priorities in life.

Okay, I'm not gonna judge you for the fact that you're disappointed by Won Bin's choice. To each their own. You respect whoever you want to respect.
But Won Bin painting his own image in a negative light, really? That's ridiculous and immature. He doesn't owe anyone for the CFs he did. He's earned his paycheck like every other working man. He's not leeching off anyone. Just because he's an actor doesn't mean he can't take a long break or take up other activities in the meantime. I respect Won Bin for the exact reason why you lost respect for him: he's picky about projects but he's devoted to his craft. He doesn't do just about every and any film because he actually respects his profession and takes his job seriously while maintaining a lowkey private life.

Just because you say sorry at the beginning and state you're sarcastic doesn't excuse the behavior. Sakura was asking an innocent question and your sarcasm is biting.
No one said anything about being an unemployed bum. One, he isn't unemployed. An actor employs themsrlces. Receiving roles, reading them and rejecting/accepting is working for an actor. Two, Sakura was implying Won Bin, and any other actor, could be doing something else. They were just curious as to what.
A person is defined by their profession. However, their profession is defined by their professional work. We are talking about an actor on a media website. That's the only definition we have for someone we don't know.
I'm a child care provider. If I'm not taking care of children, am I still a care provider?
I'm a poet. If I'm not creating verse, am I still a poet?
I'm a media fanatic. If I don't consume media, am I still a media fan?
One can do other things. But when questioning what they supposedly do the most, you have to focus on the one thing.
I don't know about the previous commenter. But before you all continue accusations, yes I am judging this conversation.

No, a person isn't defined by their profession, at least not everyone is. By your logic, a housewife or a stay-at-home husband would have no presence in life because they don't have an occupation.
Everyone has a different calling in life. Some want to act, some want to defend justice, some want to explore the world, some just want a home. Not everyone has to stay at their job to be a contributing member to the society.
purpleowl
July 5, 2016 at 8:19 AM
I'm sorry. I had a typo. I meant that a person isn't defined by their profession but their profession is defined by their professional work. I corrected it further down. Sorry for the confusion.
I believe that a housewife or househusband/stay at home wife or husband have a meaning to their life outside of being a person. Their person is who they are. Their business or work is what they do. They tend to the house. When they stop doing that, their work presence starts to decrease. Nothing happens to their person.
I also don't believe that all 8 billion people on the planet have to be a contributing member of society. As long as a person isn't subtracting from society, they can do anything they want. No one has to stick to their job. That's why monarchs are depressing. The rulers stop working forever when they give it up or die. People should always be able to take a break.
However, if the break is extended over a lengthy period of time, people wonder if the person just wants a new main profession.
P.S. I hope my comment flows. I've read it over and I see nothing wrong. But I also got only 2 hours of sleep after a suicidial panic attack. So I can only reread so many times.

He is the MOST selfish actor in Korea..
How is it that there hasn't been ONE single good offer that has captured his attention in all these past years? I think he is being arrogant and thinks is separated from the Whole Korean film industry and actors. He has rejected many good offers like "Descendant Of the Sun", "That Winter the Wind Blows" and ... to say that he is the best of the best and so unreachable...
There is a lot of difference between a picky actor and an arrogant and jerk actor. He doesn't deserve all these excitement from fans. Did he even think about his fans in these past 6 years?? Only think about money and CF.. and ABOve all, he thinks he is God and unreachable.
He should reflect on his actions and behavior and become a more humble person in real life. There are many many younger actors who are even MORE talented that him like Ryo Joon Yeol, Park Bo gum, Kim So Hyun, Lee Jung Sook,..

I wouldn't say I know much about him, I only watched one of his movies. But from what little I know, he's a movie actor (and did only that one famous drama at the beginning of his career), so his rejection of the dramas are not a surprise. Those were not creative masterpieces either. Besides its his choice to do dramas/movies/CFs or his own business.
I think demanding that actors work in films to please fans is a bit overboard.. The fans are always free to not like him and stop watching him/waiting for him. On the contrary, I think it could be considered selfish for the fans to want him to do stuff that he doesn't want to do for whatever reason just for their watching pleasure...

I am pretty sure no actor owns his or hers fans anything.
Scripts may be good but if they don't personally appeal to an actor why should they take them on? Perhaps he wanted time off?
Unless you have some insight into his mind - or can read it - your message comes across as somewhat pathetically shite as we would say in the UK.

But you don't know him or his reasons for staying away from the industry, don't you think it's a bit much to argue with such conviction that he sees himself as above his peers? For all we know he might not like being in the limelight too much, who knows. And he doesn't owe anything to anyone, if he has enough money to sustain himself it's not anybody's business what he's doing with his life. And frankly those 2 dramas are far from being good offers, especially Dots.
It's more like his fans have put him on this pedestal and think of him as this God-tier actor and now some of the same people are judging him for not fulfilling this standard they created for him. And it seems you confuse this image his fans have of him with how he is actually like or how he thinks of himself, which none of us really know.

But thanks for the laugh.
Maybe it's because I picked up TWtWB mid season and dropped it after a few episodes. But I just can't process good offers and TWtWB. And its a little ironic that both projects you mentioned star SHK. I'm a fan of DotS though.
I haven't seen him act so my opinion is biased. But why can't the man do what he wants? Act when he wants to act.
Ekkk, if I was an actor you would probably hate me. I'd choose projects very far and in between if I could afford to. I'm not putting my name on anything short of amazing. Which is why I write so rarely so I'm putting it into practice in my non famous, professional life. But hey, you'd probably use an anti username to comment about me so who really is the winner here?
Also as much as I love the boys you mentioned, why the list of 2008+ actors? It gives the new school actors a bad representation.

He just chooses a different course and takes things slow. Won Bin is far from an unemployed bum and it's entirely unfair of people to judge his priority.

A very beautiful film (and one unforgettable performance by this wonderful actor called Eddie Marsan) may lure Won Bin back to the big screen.
And yes, Ajusshi was a huge hit in the local(?) box office but a remake of a film such as Still Life is exactly what I'd expect from the young lead in Mother to do in the future.
Back to basics!

I think Won Bin is a fine actor but he is also considered one of the best looking men in Korea and due to this I think he is able to be very comfortable doing CFs til the end of time if he so wishes.
I have a theory, entirely unproven, that once someone has achieved huge success it can be hard to jump into another project. I am not surprised about him staying away from dramas and the schedule but am surprised about movies...even if he let it be known he wanted a smaller part. I think there can be a fear factor the longer you wait because expectations become entirely unreasonable.
From an interview of his I read, I don't get the impression he expected to wait this long to jump back in to acting; "it just happened that way" as they say in the dramas. :)

I've missed the Italian movie but it sounds like something Won can showcase some acting chops he's depraved us from! Also Okuribito comes to mind at the funeral part, which is great.

This sounds like a perfect role for him to make a comeback with. If there's any actor who can deliver slight nuances in his facial expressions and performance, Won Bin is fantastic at that. Also the story sounds intriguing-sign me up!

I know Won Bin has been absent for so many years but I didn't realize that it's been 6 freaking years. I also didn't realize that despite him being very popular throughout the years, he only has several movies and dramas. Well, that's something. I honestly don't know how k-netz think about him but as far as I know people generally like him since he's 'clean' (from rumors and scandal), and is very good looking.
I reeeeallly hope he'll take any project at this rate because doing CFs is not wrong at all, he can do anything he wants, but I'd love to see him acting again. I think the reason why he takes a rather long hiatus is simply because he's picky with roles AND he has tons of CF deals. I personally think he's a great actor although he doesn't have that many projects, and I'm excited for his return.

I wonder if Won Bin is like Harper Lee... all this hype just makes him more disinclined to do another project for fear of disappointing not just his fans but himself?

I can see this as well but at the same time, I can't see any project of his to fail if only for the fact that the masses will turn in just to glimpse this human Moby Dick.
Won Bin reminds me of my ultimate Japanese oppa, Ando Masanobu, who despite his flower boy look made odd, quirky movies and he basically made one a year at most. He was asked about this and his answer really stuck with me after all these years. He talked about how he can only fully immerse in one role at a time and each role takes a lot out of him so it would take months for him to "recover" from it. Obviously, ultimate Korean oppa, Won Bin, takes this to the extreme though.

I doubt the project would fail. I think @mary was saying he might be staying away because of the hype. Like he is psyching himself out and getting distracted by the pressure.
Lee Min Ho said the same thing in a interview soon after I got into kdramas, so 2013/2014. About how he only does 1 roles a year because he focuses on his character and then has to spend time shaking off that character before starting with a new one. He's not my ultimate or favorite actor. But he does do a good job becoming the character (even if they are usually disliked)
I wonder if Won Bin is doing the same thing.

Oh, Won Bin.
I actually have a theory that (among other things) he seems to be moving away from projects with romance, so I'm thinking he might be rejecting everything with overt romance (which might be everything he's offered). Lol, like I've read that he was offered Descendants and King 2 Hearts and those are both hella romantic. CFs might be a different thing, but I feel like for his films/dramas he probably doesn't want any love lines.
He's always taken a long time to pick a project, but this hiatus has been particularly long. He seems to not be into attention and is very low-key and seems to be focused on picking things that are age appropriate from what reps have been saying but I don't know what the real reason is. He was discovered so I wonder if it's just simply something he realized he just doesn't really have a passion for (even though he is very good) and now feels a bit obligated to do. But anyway, here is to hoping he'll give the acting a go again soon. I'm sure there is a lot of pressure!

The last sentences in your comment is something that has been puzzling me in RL for ages.
What happens to any individual, famous or ordinary, when they find out they possess a huge talent for something they don't really love/want to pursue? Should they go after it anyway? Should they try to make a living from it (provided they can) and nothing more than that? Or should they just give up on their "unnecessary" talent?
It's quite complicated for me (perhaps even for super stars like Won Bin. Who knows?)...

Interesting puzzle! I say each person use their naturally, huge talent to the amount that makes them happy.
Maybe that is the paradox Won Bin has found himself in. Maybe he doesn't want to retire in case he ever wants to act again (he could also un-retire, but how many times? And how stressful/annoying would that get for him?). Maybe he is fine taking a break until he finds a project that uses his excellent, unintended talent while exciting him.
Fascinating food for thought! Probably my favorite among the theories here (even if you didn't mean it as a theory). I'm glad I don't have a struggle with a huge, natural talent given this possibility. Will definitely think upon this later, probably overwhelmed because I'm thinking too much for how tired I am.

Sorry for the late reply; I don't even know if you will see this. Usually, when I think of Won Bin, I think of this. For me, maybe give it a go until I find an aspect of it that I do enjoy or give it up and focus on something that I love but doesn't come quite as naturally. I am in a situation closer to the latter right now. But, I'm sure it's different for everyone. I think it really depends on how much you're willing to grow and how far you see yourself doing the certain thing.
I'm not sure how Won Bin sees his own growth or potential. I suppose that's one of his greatest mysteries!

It's strange how appearing in less projects heightens an actor's value; but does it necessarily heighten their capability as an actor (aka better their acting skills)? Appearing in only CFs and pictorials seems like he doesn't want to be in the limelight for too long.
Not selecting a project in over 6 years? That sounds more like avoiding rather than just being selective over his projects.
But well, still excited for whatever comes out!

Any news about Won Bin is surely brings out the best and worst comments regardless whether it is DB or other kpop-related-blogs I guess... Most will start with the selfish comment and ends with a plead.. lmao~
I've been a fan of him since Autumn so this so called waiting game is nothing new.
This ones seems interesting and the type of movie he will do. Comeback if you wants Won Bin and I as fan for sure will be watching it but its okay if you decline too.

I love your name!!! I fo like Won Bin's nose & lips, and his eyes are attractive. Different taste I guess, or the fact that I haven't seen any of the ones listed act. But this is my Asian actors list
▪ Sunny Wang
▪ John Cho (first noticed him in Big Fat Liar - 2002)
▪ Godfrey Gao (never seen him act)
▪ Philip Lee
▪ Daniel Henney (only seen him act in MLKSS, which ?)
▪ Mike D'angelo (I guess people could see boyishness)
▪ Wu Chun
▪ Michael Zheng
Um, well I just remembered some gorgeous men to watch so... 안녕 ????
