Kang Dong-won offered role in gritty alternate-reality movie

Workaholic movie star Kang Dong-won (Violent Prosecutor) is once again considering a role in dystopian action film Jin-roh: The Wolf Brigade. Recently, he was courted to be a lead character in Song Kang-ho’s upcoming movie Fifth Column, but ended up declining. Currently, he has finished up filming for fantasy mystery film Hidden Time, and from there, he went straight onto the set of Master, opposite Lee Byung-heon and Kim Woo-bin.

It was 2013 when talks about casting Kang Dong-won in Jin-roh: The Wolf Brigade first arose. The project was put on hold due to various other commitments by director Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil; The Good, The Bad, The Weird). Now Kim has restarted his work on what will be a live-action adaptation of the Japanese animation film by the same name. If Kang Dong-won confirms, it’ll be a reunion project for them — they previously worked together on a short action film called Hide and Seek (also known as The X).

Jin-roh: The Wolf Brigade takes place in a 1960s post-war alternate reality, where Japan has just been taken over by Germany. The main character is a young cop on a special anti-terror task force, in this heavily militarized police state. He starts questioning the morality of his actions when he’s confronted with the suicide-bombing of a young girl from the rebel forces. It’ll be interesting to see how Kang Dong-won handles the role. He’s been in films of nearly every genre under the sun, from sageuk fantasy (Jeon Woo-chi) to psychological mystery (M) to feel-good family drama (Dugeun Dugeun My Life). However, Jin-roh, with its nihilistic undertones and post-apocalyptic backdrop, will be a new horizon for him to explore.

No further details have been announced regarding other casting decisions, filming schedule, or possible release dates. Let’s just hope that this time, the project will continue as planned.

Sounds like a project Kim Ji-woon would be highly interested in directing or maybe Bong Joon-ho but he'd probably prefer writing his own films.

I like KDW but for me the big draw for this film is KJW the director, my fav director in the world at the moment, great director that is more hardcore, original voice than the other popular K-directors.

I cant wait to see this film mostly for the bigger name K cinema world name wise in Kim Ji-Won.

I cannot wait to see Kim Jee Woon's take on Jin-roh. He's one of the holy trinity of top Korean directors: Park Chan Wook, Bong Joon Ho.

i have watched the animation and thats one of the best movie. i just wonder why they never make it into live action. so in the end korea doing it. great job.
i hope they will stick to the original story tho it doesnt have a happy end. because in the end the red riding hood is devoured by the wolf.

oh wow! KDW never rests. I think KDW would grab the chance to work with KJW anytime :) with the story to boot, Jin-roh is like a done deal for KDW, if schedule don't get in the way.

Only thing I've seen him in was Woochi which was a fun movie and he did an excellent job in. The story to this movie sounds dark and gritty and based off of his acting in Woochi I'm sure he will do an excellent job.

I really wish I had better access to Korean movies. I really only have what is shown on Netflix or Dramafever. There are some movies I've really wanted to see but don't have access to.

Yes! Hope he takes it. Loved him ever since 1%, but imo he was his best in Kundo. I would love to see him do more sinister roles. A bad KDW is a sight to behold.
