Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 25-31, 2016
by HeadsNo2
It’s interesting to see how Bring It On, Ghost is pulling in the same or higher ratings than Beautiful Mind, which is all the more significant because Ghost is on a cable network. The times, they are a changin’.
The Wednesday-Thursday lineup has been seeing some changes since the advent of W—Two Worlds, which quickly surpassed Uncontrollably Fond’s ratings to reach first place in the time slot. It’ll be interesting to see whether this dynamic changes in the coming weeks, or whether W’s originality will create a ratings hit for the oft-overlooked MBC network.
Over on the weekend, Age of Youth continues to pull in relatively low numbers, while Police Unit 38 and The Good Wife battle it out for the top cable spot. As far as the bonafide weekend circuit, no surprises there—Five Kids continues to dominate, but Flower in Prison seems poised to take the top spot once Five Kids ends.

I'm so glad for w's rise in ratings this week, hope it rises more, it deserves it. From storyline, directing, pace and the actors's visuals who are so good and giving life to their characters.

@hope me too, for the first time I'm happy that a drama I love is doing well! They really do deserve it and I'm totally a fan of writer Sung Jae Jung now. All her previous works (Nine, Queen In-Hyun's Man, and Three Musketeers) have been quite epic so far. W is going into that list too.
PS. You don't happen to be a Lee Seung Gi fan are you? If so...hi there fellow airen! :D ?

I also love Sung Jae Jung's previous dramas and she's my first reason to finally watch W. Her scripts were truly good and sometime so mind blowing, for example Nine Times Travel. Honestl5, I need to read all discussions forums about Ninne after the drama ended to understood the ending since I'm not equally smart like SJJ. LOL
And W -only in 4 eps- alredy blew my mind, I just hope it'll end with like...more understandable twist. LOL

I'm so happy with W's rise. Truly deserving. I honestly did not expect to love it this much
But i read a couple of articles claiming that Han Hyo-Joo's acting is the only negative thing about W ??? Whaaaaat????
I haven't seen any of her other dramas but i thought she was doing really well. Her flailing about i thought was to bring a more lighter touch to the show which might otherwise get too gritty. Plus i loved the emotional jail scene. How is that for good acting?
What's happening?

Me too! I am loving her portrayal as Yeon Joo! So I don't really mind what other people say! plus I am so In love with her chemistry with LJS!
Maybe there are some who really doesn't prefer her kind of acting but others are just straight up hating and being salty AF!
Some give their criticism in a classy way but there are really some who are so mean and rude! Anyways let's not mind them, as long as we are loving HHJ's portrayal their rude comments doesn't matter!

people in Korea may be not used with comical acting style in drama. compare to Japan, most actors are even more comical than HHJ. but.. this kind of acting is required and relevant to the story. if she keeps straight... this drama will be misleading. since there are more people defending with a great explanation rather than how suzy's got defended (which explanations are being repeated as"being improved") , i think she's still fine for most people

I'm glad that not everyone thinks she is acting bad.
Also, i think a lot of her acting is a directional choice. Unless they wanted to go all dark and mysterious, how to make the show comic or happy-ish? Bec i don't think you can flash someone in a gritty setting and behave as if nothing happened :)
The comedy can't come from KC. He is the one getting almost killed every episode plus having his whole turned upside down. So it has to come from her. Hence all the internal monologues and acting clutzy. Sad that she is getting flak for it.

I love HHJ's acting in this drama too. For me, prior to this drama I've only seen HHJ in the movie Always so I don't know much about her, buy I thought her acting is perfect here. Her animated facial expressions were natural if not better than a lot of japanese animated acting. She's not even overacting at all, if anything she pulls it off rather naturally to me. If I were pick an example of over-acting that looks unnatural I'd say Baek In-Ha from Cheese In Trap - now that's overacting! Other examples would be Gu Hye Sun (BOF & Blood).

Han Hyo Joo was always hit or miss for me .. she's a good actress and she always has a great chemistry with her leads .. but it depends on the role ..
I'm not watching W yet, but I've read the articles too .. I think the koreans had very high expectations of her and they were not met .. she was great in BL ( she had some ups and downs though ) and that was a nation's drama back then .. they were too excited to see her back, that now that she's back it felt less exciting .. maybe ?
love her though <3

Me too. I'm totally fine with HHJ's acting. Just imagine yourself in that situation. Wouldn't you be flailing about and bewildered likewise? So, not too sure why all those complaints. And yes, jail scene really hit home with the emotions!! Plus, I loved HHJ in Dong Yi.

Indeed! I do not get the complaints since I imagine that finding yourself in such unbelievable situations, it is just normal to act crazy and desperate...also she is supposed to be a die-hard fan of Kang Chul, so how can she not be out of her mind? I think it is quite in character that she behaves exaggeratedly, and she is good for comedy too. Actually, I like her quite a lot in this. :)

HHJ's acting can be a hit or miss depending on the role. TBH I just watched her in Dong Yi before (and some of her movies). She was good even not flawless, and she must meet a good partner and team too. She alone will not be able to carry the whole show. In Dong Yi, there were many other characters that can balance with her, and they all acted well too.
So far she is doing great in W. I didn't put high expectation on her knowing her limitation , so I'm satisfied so far. I don't know probably some Koreans have a high expectation of her, especially this is her comeback after 6 years.

Wouldn't say that HHJ was good in DY.
She just kept using the same few mannerisms over and over and over again - that it got annoying.
In fact, aside from a few "reliables" and one impressive newbie (Park Ha-sun), there was a lot of bad, over-acting going on and I blame the PD.
Even Kim Yoo-jung got afflicted - her worst performance (thank goodness things went back to way they should be in tMEtS).

@bips99, if HHJ's acting is the worst thing you hear about W, then that means it's doing great. :P I think it's similar to people's reaction about Lee Je-hoon in Signal. They can be a bit more animated than the scene needs, but after a couple of eps they just sink into character and you don't notice it anymore. Because WOW the writing and the music and the visuals and just... everything else!
There are shows where every other scene is frustrating, world-building is inconsistent, all the characters are hateful, acting all over the place, etc. Then there are shows where you have to dig deep to even find something to criticize. For me, Signal and W (so far) are the latter type. So I'll just accept this gift from the Drama Gods. :D

For me HHJ has her moments of overdoing it (e.g. when she goes "what to do!?" or that scene when she woke up in KC's room). Not her acting throughout the show, but some parts. However, she's still okay for me unlike other actors I've seen. I can somehow tolerate her acting such scenes. I hope as the drama progresses, she settles into her character.

mary, perfect comparison!
I was so into the story and everything else in Signal that I didn't even notice LJH's overacting until I read people commenting about it. Same goes to HHJ's performance here although to me it was just her opening scene in the hospital that was a bit meh, otherwise she's doing a perfect portrayal of her character imo.

That’s what I thought too! It was strange at first and then I came to like it after a while.
Out of hundreds of comments on the recaps, there are only a handful who have a problem with HHJ's acting. And I can sort of see what they mean, but at the same time, I don't agree that it's bad acting.
There won’t be one actor/show that everyone will agree on 100%. It’s only natural, even for well-loved shows, to have dissenting opinion. So I just acknowledge their right to constructive criticism and move on.

I hardly think one "article" that merely assembled some random netizens dissing her can be considered anything representative of the general viewership.
Most articles/comments praise her character/her acting and those are the ones that get thousands of upvotes. If it really is the general opinion that a certain actor's acting is bad, then we would have heard it a lot more often, instead of just this one article (that was translated by a couple sites) in which majority of comments actually praised her.

Not only that, some ppl may see AoY is kind of plain show. I think the writer and the PD expected that this drama will only be loved by minority. jTBC is not as strong like TVN in terms of rating, if this drama is being aired at TVN probably can at least get 3%. I love the concept of this drama, it is about friendship between roomates, which is rare in Korean drama.
Don't want to be greedy, so I just pray they manage to pass 1% rating next week. Of course the more the better it is.

Wouldn't say that Han Ye-ri is "green" - she has a pretty extensive filmography (mostly in film), but she only recently has been getting nominated (and winning) awards.
Same goes for Park Eun-bin who has been acting since age 7, but probably still better known for being a child actor.
The other 3 are singers turned actors w/ a mixed bag of acting roles, but at the same time, that's usually the case for most of the cast of the AM/Reply Series.
Didn't realize that Ryu Hwa-young was a member of T-ara (or had been the one that allegedly had been bullied).
While many have commented on the physical similarity btwn RHY and Park Shin-hye, think RHY is a little prettier (more symmetrical features), tho wouldn't say that either is particularly striking.
But for a relative newbie and a singer-turned-actor, RHY has really impressed me w/ her performance in AoY thus far.
Probably will get flack from the PSH fans, but RHY is doing a better acting job than anything I've seen PSH do.

I agree, jTBC flies under the radar but it's the best network right now. While it's sad the ratings are so low, higher ratings would come with a lot of baggage and probably lower quality. Right now jTBC pays writers and directors a lot of money make the shows they want, and while they've definitely got a mixed track record, they're responsible for literally every masterpiece and the majority of good shows to come out of the last 3-5 years. I hope they keep doing what they're doing (and that they can afford to), because without them the future would be very bleak.

Not watching Beautiful Mind, but I can commiserate about the ratings, having been a diehard fan of a low-rated show myself.
I think the thing that really sucks when dramas with an unusual-for-kdramas concept don't do well, is that it puts another nail in the coffin of taking risks.
Though following the tried-and-tested formula (melo, major writer, popular leads) doesn't appear to work so well for KBS either, considering Uncomfortably Fond is also getting its ass kicked.

@pogo,
Uncontrollably Freudian, as in slippage? ;-)
@junny,
I've been preemptively self-medicating for BEAUTIFUL MIND withdrawal this coming week by watching more JH shows. Finished SUCCESSFUL STORY OF A BRIGHT GIRL, and then found MAYBE aka RABBIT AND LIZARD on YouTube, which I really liked. It was mentioned in an interview he did that's at HanCinema (below, first of two parts), mainly about CHUNO... I think that what he says about acting with the eyes in portraying Dae-Gil is also relevant to LYO in BEAUTIFUL MIND...
His first flick, ZZANG (1998) is also on YT, but without subtitles. In case of emergency, break glass and watch raw...
[INTERVIEW] Actor Jang Hyeok - Part 1

Thank you so much for the interview link! It's very interesting and reminds me of why I loved Dae-gil so much when I first watched Chuno. Jang Hyuk was truly mesmerising in that role. And yes, the eye-acting bit is so relevant to Young-oh. I am loving all the subtle body language thingies he's doing with Young-oh. So marvellous to watch.
I went to read part 2 of that interview and was fascinated by his take on martial arts. Being a bit of a wuxia girl myself, I rather liked the fight choreography in Chuno and so was really pleased to learn that he had a hand in doing the actual fights himself. I have mad respect for actors who go the distance and who take an active interest in shaping the characters they portray. Knowing that Jang Hyuk is such an actor really delights me.

@junny, @pogo,
I'm so glad you spotted my post as I was so late to the party. I don't usually read the viewership ratings, but it was totally worth it for pogo's sentient keyboard episode... Vasn't this the keyboard formerly from Transylvania? Might have to propitiate it with a sprinkle of O negative...
Great interview with JH, huh? I don't recall exactly when I first read the whole thing -- it could be well over a year ago or longer, before I'd watched my first wuxia, 2006's Cantonese outing A BATTLE OF WITS with Si-Won, after seeing him in HYANGDAN. Definitely worth a re-read. More on wuxia later...
Yeah, now that I have a bunch more Kdramas under my belt, I appreciate JH's craft even more, particularly in the martial arts area. For that matter, I love the fact that he, Lee Joon-Gi, and Gang Dong-Won all do their own stunts -- and choreography, IIRC. Talk about going whole-hog into their roles...
Re: subtleties of characterization
You might have missed my tardy comment in the BEAUTIFUL MIND ep. 12 recap (post 19.2) regarding Heo Jun Ho's highly nuanced portrayal of Dr. Lee... and LYO's filial mimicry.
Now that I know that wuxia is you cup of tea (and is becoming mine, too, thanks to the 2008 series BICHEONMU), I want to share another article, this one referencing one of the actors in A BATTLE OF WITS. I think you'll find it illuminating.
Obit of late martial artist and actor Yu Chenghui and his classic films
http://www.shaolinchamber36.com/buddhist-blog/kung-fu-legend-yu-cheng-hui-has-passed/
Master Yu Chenghui's recreation of the “Double-Handed Sword” technique really got my attention. One of these days I'll hele on over to NetFlix and catch him in the SHAOLIN TEMPLE movies, and seek out of the others mentioned in his obituary.
Enjoy! ;-)

@PakalanaPikake,
Oh, I saw your comment on Dad "shrugging" his scalp, and I have to agree. I've seen Dad do it any number of times, but had not quite registered Young-oh doing the same. Thanks for pointing that out! It's really fascinating, all these little quirks and gestures. Just amazing how much thought both Heo Jun-ho and Jang Hyuk put into portraying their characters.
As for wuxia, I grew up on the 80s and 90s Hong Kong wuxia dramas and films, there was some great stuff back then. It's unfortunate perhaps, but I've never heard of Yu Chenghui since I don't really gravitate towards mainland dramas/films - more of the Jet Li variety if you're talking about mainland martial artists. He looked vaguely familiar though, maybe I'd seen him somewhere but didn't place him or his name.
I watched Story of Hyangdan, it was a cute little drama. I thought Seo Ji-hye was so neat in there and find it a pity she's never hit it big enough for a lead role.

"I think the thing that really sucks when dramas with an unusual-for-kdramas concept don’t do well, is that it puts another nail in the coffin of taking risks."
This is true. Last week I read articles that put a lot of hope on W to succeed in ratings because that might open doors for more creative risks from the Big 3 public stations. Like if W can get good ratings, maybe they'll accept more.

Sassy Go Go wasn't cut, probably because it was planned for only 12 episodes to begin with. I shudder to think of what might have happened had it needed major special effects or post-production like Moorim School, they barely even had product placement (but did succeed in making me buy at least three packets of gummy bears lol)
I'd have loved a couple more episodes for Ji-soo and Chae Soo-bin in particular, but sometimes short and sweet is best.

Yep, my poor beloved little Sassy was also from KBS, and they dropped it - a high school drama - just before Korean high school exam season.
Thankfully they planned it as a 12-episoder from the start and the show was actually stronger for it - I swear half the dramas we watch don't actually need 20 episodes!

Jang Hyuk is a phenomenal ❤ I think he will still gets recognition even this drama is suffering such a low rating. Kim Hyun Joo of I Have a Lover last year managed to bring home 4 awards from SBS Drama Awards despite her drama had a very low rating.
Although the chances to win is very low, hope Jang Hyuk can even be nominated for Daesang this year.
And I hope Kim Rae Won will watch BM and say to himself " this is kind of role that I should play, not the one I'm playing right now". Sorry for the rant, but still cannot get it over why KRW accepted Doctors from the beginning?

I'm fairly allergic to Kim Rae-won, but I kinda understand why he's taken on the role in Doctors. Sometimes you just want to ease off and not mentally exhaust yourself all the time. He was in Punch and Gangnam Blues prior to Doctors, neither of which was fluffy or a walk in the park, so it may be a bit of a balancing act to now go for a lighter role where he takes a backseat to Park Shin-hye. Or maybe he saw something in the role that he wanted to try, who knows?
As for Jang Hyuk, I hope he gets a shot at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

I don't know but he had done roles like in Doctors in his earlier career, so my opinion after did so great in Punch he should do more challenging roles. I don't mind doing romcom as well, but to take a backseat to PSH is something off. just my opinion, as I was really amazed with him in Punch. I dont mind if he wanted lighter roles or romcom, but i just feel he is just an accessory and has not so much to do in the drama, when in fact he deserves better. Anyway, I have nothing against Doctors and PSH. ??

@prettysup Jang Hyuk had done more variety of roles, and always great. He is kind of actor who is capable enough to carry the whole show on his own. July 31, 2016 at 5:42 PM
@noonecares. I think you have to look at it case-by-case, though, and examine what we want female-centric to mean, before you start calling people hypocrites. Just to take your logic to completely crazy extremes hopefully drama will never test, do you think we should celebrate if say, Ha Jung-woo played sidekick in a Han Ga-in vehicle written by the Hong sisters?
Kim Rae-won has had a patchy career and just recently had the year of his life. It's hardly an affront to feminism that people would rather see him build on that with more challenging roles than play second fiddle in a mediocre romance drama. You'll rarely see people complain about far greater actors taking a supporting role in worthwhile projects--no one had a problem when Kim Myung-min took a backseat to Go Doo-sim, Bae Jong-ok, and Han Go-eun in More Beautiful Than a Flower, for one example, or when Jung Bo-seok took a backseat to Oh Yeon-soo in La Dolce Vita, for another.

Mediocre romance drama...Okay, sure. When's the last time a female centric drama at a Big Three station had the ratings that Doctors is getting...Your two examples are close to a decade old, and La Dolce Vita had abysmal ratings. Doctors sort of 'ruin' KRW for me almost like how Heirs ruined LMH.
To begin with, I was never bowled over by KRW but I liked his role in Punch.
When I compared 3 big age gap pairings of recent dramas like YSY and KSR, JH and PSD and KRW and PSH, I like the Doctors' OTP the least.
In MoW, YSY managed to pull off innocent love despite KSR being a minor in real life. This pairing was the one I didn't expect to like at all. In Beautiful Minds, I initially abhorred the idea of JH and PSD's characters together but now I am singing a totally different tune, they are so cute! I never saw JH this way, not even in Fated To Love You. I totally forget about the age gap whenever I see Wi Fi couple.
I can't pinpoint the problem I have with KRW in Doctors. He is a good actor but I think another actor might have been able to sell the transition from teacher to lover material more convincingly. Where he is supposed to be charming, I found him slimy instead. Given that I read mostly people falling for his charms, I think I am the sole person who feel this way.

There was no reason to cut Come Back Ahjusshi because no way did they want to start another drama to compete with DOTS. It made sense to let CBA finish its run and then start up a new drama to compete with what came after DOTS which I cannot for the life of me remember.
Having said that, KBS shouldn't have done what they did. It was totally disrespectful. Is something going to go and beat out Doctors toward the end of its run. No. It just makes no sense unless people believe the whole Olympic excuse, which I don't.

I enjoyed Healer and I like more Beautiful Mind than Doctors and also I like more Uncontrollably Fond than W. UF is the1-st kdrama that moved me. It seams that I prefer low ratings kdrama. In my opinion both KWB and Suzy are doing a great job actors. I like how Suzy's portraying the girl who has to struggle for every penny and to whom all the others are against her (incl. her BFF and her broother who think they know better than her what is good for her) so she can't trust anyone even if they show her love or friendship. So I'm a little frustrated that UF's ratings decreased. As for BM it reminds me of Dr House. Doctors' great asset is KRW who's personage is so cheerful. In Unit 38 SIG is absolutely gorgeous while Sooyoung is absolutely flat (expressionless). BTW I don't think an actor is good only because he/she knows how to cry but if he is able to make me feel the personage.

If I remember correctly, the last weekend sageuk to surpass 30% was Immortal Lee Soon-shin (KBS) and that was more than 10yrs ago.

Agree. 2%-3% for TVN is not a failure. If goes to big station, the number will be double and likely to be between 6%-7% which is considering pretty decent nowadays.

Soooo happy for W!!! Glad that it's getting the recognition it deserves. Praying for more solid episodes all throughout its run and for higher ratings!!!! This year has been such an amazing one for kdramas and a few have risen to the top of my list- Signal and Six Flying Dragons!! W is well on its way. Ughhh, can't contain my excitement. W-day come fast!
Sad tho for BM! I am truly enjoying this show. Behind on other shows like Doctors, PU38 and Bring it on ghost. W is soo ruining things for me lol!

Kind of off topic but since I've read a lot of times how people (incl.me) are dissatisfied and bored with the hospital politics in BM and Doctors I'm wondering (and looking forward) what the Punch-writer will come up with in his next work which is going to be a medical drama iirc. What happened to that drama anyway...

I know, right? When these long, high-quality family dramas get going like this it can be jarring when they finally end. The first one I ever watched was "What Happens to My Family?" (aka What's With this Family) which got great ratings and even a slight extension. I would say that Five Kids is even better than that one though. (But worth checking out if you need something to fill after!)
I think the best thing that's going to result from Five Kids is that Sung Hoon will almost certainly get to headline a regular drama after this.

Do BM fans know that you can talk about how you're upset a drama is underperforming while not dragging another drama or actor...It seems like they can't...what a mess.
Doctors isn't the sole reason it's underperforming. Let me enlighten you, there's a third drama airing at the EXACT SAME TIME...AND GUESS WHAT....it's getting fairly good ratings in the double digit range.
But, enjoy those last two struggle episodes before the drama fades into oblivion I guess.

There's quite a few comments in this thread alone of people dissing KRW as is their right I suppose. I've been a fan of Beautiful Mind even through the rocky first episodes but it does get a little anti on the Doctors and PSH though it did calm down for a while. I'm watching and enjoying them both for what they are, totally different genres that just happen to be set in a hospital.

Is there a rule in Dramabeans that says shows can't be compared negatively? Should only positive comments be made? What's wrong with preferring one show over another? Everyone's just giving their opinions here.
How can people not compare Doctors and BM? Two medical dramas airing on the same night in the same time slot. It's just calling out to be compared.
I haven't followed Doctors so I don't know if it's good, bad or indifferent. But I'm interested to know how it compares to BM, a show that I've followed avidly.

Comparison and stating your opinion is fine, but name-calling and insulting people isn't. It's not as evident here, but I've seen fans of Beautiful Mind question the fans of Doctors for their preference, saying things like "Koreans are dumb for preferring Doctors over the intelligent masterpiece of Beautiful Mind" or "KRW should regret ever taking the lead role in Doctors because he sucks in this!"
Yes, you can say that it isn't the only drama that's facing hate like that currently *eyes the comments in the latest recap of Uncontrollably Fond* but it's certainly received quite a bit of bashing. I have yet to watch Beautiful Mind, but I'd rather watch a drama without feeling bad for liking it/not watching something else.

HHJ is underperforming, and is definitely the weakest part of the drama. I kind of wished they got a different female lead because not only is her acting the weak link, she has some questionable things going on in her personal life which makes it hard for me, and I'm going to assume some Korean viewers to watch her.
That being said, her performance isn't bad enough to ruin the drama at all, since it's pretty damn near perfect in all other areas. But, I do find it hilarious that ifans are falling over themselves to defend this acting as a....directorial choice...ummm, I don't know about that.
During the scene where KC visits her at the prison, she's supposed to be crying and couldn't even get a tear out until like two minutes after the fact where a single tear fell down. And then there's her sitcom acting, which I won't even get into.
The W fandom, especially on this site, is reaching Healer levels of annoying, so any criticism of her acting will basically be immediately shit down as I've seen in other posts.

I don't know if our levels mean criticism on HHJ will be shut down. I've seen some decent conversations about it.
I can see why her acting is bugging some. Anywhere else it would bug me but I think it's the character and not her acting. In Kang Chul's words "She's the craziest girl in the neighborhood". I think that stands for both in and out of Web to on so she's always a bit much. Because OYJ is too much.

Yeah, a lot of people love her acting in this, which is great. I'm just less than impressed considering this is the first time seeing her in something in awhile.
I agree with you though, people are open to hearing criticism of her on this site and I think that's mainly because she doesn't exactly have the biggest ifandom considering the fact she's mainly focused on films the past few years.
W reminds me of the Healer fandom in that, even though I love the drama and LJS, the ott hysterics, as I saw another user put it, gets old really fast.
Like, I get it. Lee Jong Suk is good looking, but I don't need an essay being written about him every time he winks...or moves a limb...or breathes for that matter.
And I say this as someone who likes him a lot and is glad he is doing so well after being on a hiatus and having to deal with a shit agency for most of his career.

Maybe bcoz I've watched quite a few of her dramas and movies before, Shining Inheritance, Dong Yi, Cold Eyes, Love 911, so I've seen her serious acting before, i do get that the comical acting is intended and was not distracted by it. And it was not overdone to me. HJE is a much better actor than HHJ in every way
like you, i've watched a lot of her dramas and movies. i used to be a huge fan after seeing her on the love letter variety show and DLed all her works. she was so amateur in shining inheritance but that was her 1st drama so i gave it a pass. i tried her movies, she looked so beautiful with her coactors and had wonderful chemistry with them but there was always something missing about her acting. there's no depth, she acts like she's reading off a script. i have never gotten a feel that she's one of those exceptional actresses who becomes the character itself. and dong yi was the clincher for me, she was so bad, i deleted that drama from my extHD, saved myself 50+GB. she acted as though she was a blind person whenever she lowered her head.. can't believe i still remember her sucky acting from few years ago, that's how bad it was that it still sticks to my mind.

Han hyo joo is one fine actress.
Have it ever occurred to you guys that her character was supposed to be like that,as directed.
It's completely funny for me and not over acting or over reacting.
True she was focusing in movies than drama lately. But that's her choice isn't it?
She won awards for her movies meaning her acting is acknowledged.
I was taken into the W world whenever I watch the movie and I keep rewatching the funny scene like few times literally.
It's so natural.
And about her tears in prison, I believe the director asked her to just cry a bit, I mean logically she knew it's only a temporary world.she would be back in reality life where she won't be a prisoner. If I'm at her position, why would I cry, every episode has the " to be continue" where I would dissapear to real world.
So stop the hating and support them instead.!!

This is the first time I am commenting on DB about HHJ. I am not her fan or even a newly minted one :)
Did it occur to you that you might be prejudiced about her whether or not she performs well in W? You wrote "I kind of wished they got a different female lead because not only is her acting the weak link, she has some questionable things going on in her personal life which makes it hard for me"
IMO, this makes your criticism less objective.
If I find Song Hye Kyo's acting in Dots subpar, it's nothing to do with her tax scandal. Neither would I factor or mention it in my evaluation.
I can't remember when I last watched HHJ in anything. Maybe, it was in Masquerade the Korean movie. She did a good job opposite Lee Byung Hun who was excellent in it.
I am not sure if HHJ will be good at emoting in W but I am enjoying her so far.
Do criticisms on DB get shut down just because they aren't with the majority? I don't think so. Just expect to have a lot of debate. Less common on DB are fan wars which are very prevalent elsewhere these days because we have all these popular girls on screen right now - Park Shin Hye, Suzy and Han Hye Joo. A while ago, it was Song Hye Kyo and Moon Chae Won. That's when the catfights and mudslinging contests take place.

I'm completely fine with anyone disagreeing with my opinion. I thought Han Hyo Joo was a fairly weak actress before I started this, but I genuinely love her performance here. I find her character to be hilarious, heartfelt and possessing that "crazy idiotic charm" she's clearly supposed to. I personally think those who don't like her simply don't like the character, which is fine. They took a risk making her character the way she is, but I'm glad they did it.
That said, can't we just voice our different views without singling out fandoms and undermining their opinions? I just don't get it. I probably wouldn't have responded if you had just said your piece on Han's acting, but I just don't understand this concept of finding other people's opinions hilarious because they aren't in tune with yours. Quite a few commenters on the recent W recap shared their concerns about her performance and I didn't see any signs of their conversation being shut down. If by "shut down" you just mean other commenters coming in with different opinions, then again, I don't understand why this isn't okay in a discussion. But, I guess, this is just another point upon which our opinions differ.

I am talking about acting. She has been studying medicine for years and she must have had some contact with sick and injured patient through training.
People who even trained in CPR without extended medical knowledge knows to calm the heck down and keep a severely injured person from going into shock.
Does it make you feel good to throw little insult like that? Just because I'm not a doctor doesn't mean I don't have common sense or have never work inside a hospital with sick and severely injured people in it.

Valentina
August 1, 2016 at 5:16 PM
Her acting aside, and I don't recall throwing any insults, as I am someone who is studying medicine, everyone reacts differently. It's not a matter of calm down or common sense. You have doctors who have worked with injured patients, but don't know how to deal if a patient dies. Its the same has residents who have been exposed to new patients, but they aren't always the one to tend to them. Learning something and physically doing it are two different things. It was clear from her acting (specifically her words) that this was the first time she encountered a case like this.
Using your CPR training as an example, there are people who are confident enough to try out their skill and know that they might not injure the patient, but there are others who fear that doing anything, no matter how good they are, can lead to the patient suffering worse. If you feel I insulted you, I am sorry, but different people react differently. Using that scene to judge her acting for the reasons you stated doesn't really make sense.
The other Kiara

I see your point and I understand where you are coming from and you are right, everyone reacts differently.

W - if we go by the writer's previous work its going to be a solid show. The cinematography is fabulous. I don't normally follw shows but am hooked on this one.
Why is YJ being drawn back into the webtoon?
Nine - the incense sticks were the time travel device
QIHM - talisman and cellphone
W - business card and id tag which he uses to summon her back. She saved him before she knew who he was so to her he is real and life is precious being a doc and all. .

More than Doctors' ratings stagnating, I am curious that W's didn't move at all for ep 4. The jump from ep 2's ratings to 3's was already amazing so I should perhaps not expect too much.
I have not seen such an interesting, well produced drama for a long time. But it's too early to call it the best drama of the year. My hope is that the writer, who has good track record, will continue to surprise and wow us.
I wouldn't expect W to hit the phenomenal ratings of Dots but if Doctors can hit high teens, surely W can exceed 20% if it continues to be good.

I just realised something. Five Kids is on at 19:55 while Flower In Prison is on at 21:45. Therefore I think it's unfair to compare both ratings. (Also BM and Bring It On Ghost are airing at different times too, we shouldn't be comparing both)

Exactly, they each dominate their own time slot with relatively less to no competition.
Flower in Prison airs 1hr and 50mins later after Five Fingers.
Most of the weekend shows are overlapping each other like Five Kids (7:55pm) vs Age of Youth (8:30pm) and The Good Wife (8:30pm).
The weekend rating strategies by the big 3s drives me nuts.

I think that this week W will see about a 4-5% jump in ratings. Things just got so ~interesting~ that I'm sure the buzz is going to make more people tune in and see what's up.
My only concern is that a lot of times the first 4-6 episodes of a drama are a lot more lavish with SFX and fight choreography and action and then the show goes into live shoot mode and it gets much simpler and falls into more melo/romance action. With some shows like Healer it's not too bad, the story remains good you just don't get as much action later on. On the other hand Yong Pal became a completely different show which I never enjoyed half as much as when it started.
But, with W they've done so much background setting it up and creating the manwha and the visual style and all I'm hoping it'll stay edgy and reality-bending all through the show.
