Moony eyes on the set of Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
by girlfriday
Aw, cute. Here’s our first official peek at KBS’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday series Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, starring Park Bo-gum (Answer Me 1988) and Kim Yoo-jung (Angry Mom) in a youth romance set in Joseon. They look awfully adorable smiling and making moony eyes at each other, and Kim Yoo-jung looks so small that I wonder if the other eunuchs will mistake her for a little boy.
The web novel adaptation is a reimagining of Crown Prince Hyomyeong (played by Park Bo-gum) as your average drama hero—that is, a prickly geeeenius—and the untold story of his youth. Kim Yoo-jung plays a girl who makes a living crossdressing as a man in order to give out love advice. She first meets the prince out in town thinking that he’s just a very pretty scholar, and they don’t get off to a good start. But then she’ll enter the palace as a eunuch, and they’ll reunite and become friends, and eventually fall in love.
Chae Soo-bin (Sassy Go Go) co-stars as the prince’s wife, and B1A4’s Jinyoung (Warm and Cozy) rounds out the love square as the prince’s friend and rival for the heroine’s affections.
The setup and the main characters are pretty standard for a fusion sageuk romance, so it’ll really be up to the writing and directing (by the team behind Who Are You—School 2015) and the actors’ rapport to set it apart. I’m hopeful, partly because of the cast, and partly because I just want it to be good. Very scientific, I know.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds follows Beautiful Mind on August 15.

Well it depends on the approach they are taking, because in Moon embracing the sun the prince was supposed to get married to Yeon woo but then she was kind of killed and all that. And even though he got married, he never had anything to do with his wife, he always had Yeon Woo on his heart and when she came back at the end they got married. So she was never his concubine, she became the legitimate queen.

Moon Sun was based on the popular novel so they kind of get away with the king not sleeping with his wife because his long lost princess was still alive.
In reality, he would've consummated his marriage whether he wants to or not.

Yeah, the eunuchs choose whom he's going to sleep with on which night, right?
I always lol'd at the king in METS--he never seemed to do any work, never cared about producing an heir to stabilize his reign, what with his healthy older brother being a coup magnet, and just moped around about his adolescent crush for ten years.

Political marriage is not always loveless. Sometimes the couple it works out where they learn to love and respect each other after being married for a while. (eg King Gongmin and Queen Noguk).
Every noble lady who marries the king, prince or a noble man knows that their husband is expected to have concubines. No one goes into a marriage blindly.

Really just makes you realize what an amazing man Gongmin was for his time. Marries his wife for political reasons, then falls in love with her, and then never looks at another woman for as long as she lives, even though they had difficulty producing an heir. All this in a time when no one would have batted an eye if he'd had twenty concubines. And then in Shin Don he refuses to touch her for years when he finds out she could die giving birth. Gongmin <3333
But Shin Don acknowledged that his lack of an heir was crippling his reign. METS never got that far lol.

I'm not saying that all political marriages are loveless. I'm saying that this particular marriage is most likely going to be a loveless one for political reasons. According to the relationship flowchart, neither the Crowned Prince nor his wife has feelings for each other. That doesn't necessarily mean they do not have respect for one another: they just don't have romantic affections for their spouse.

I know what you meant. Political marriage was the norm back then and most did not get to experience romantic love between a husband and wife.
It hard to when they have to share their husband with other women.

That premise is what completely destroyed my love for Scarlet Heart once they tried to focus on the "love" between the main actors who already had wives that loved them. I wonder how they will handle it in this one since hard to find adultery romantic in any way.

I read somewhere else that Jo Ha Yeon is the one who offered Prince Lee Yeong a political marriage with her. I think she doesn't have any romantic feelings for him until she finds the truth that Prince Lee Yeong is attracted to Hong Ra On(and it hurts her pride, I think, because JHY only knows Ra On as a eunuch. And "he" is pretty too hee).
I found JHY is very interesting character. I hope she wouldn't be a typical jerk princess who will do anything to get rid of anyone who gets in her way.

I love Kim Yoo Jung. I was rooting for her to play Hae Soo in Scarlet Heart which eventually went to IU. I think she's a better actress but too young to romance my smexy Lee Jun Ki, perhaps illegal even.
As much as I adore KYJ, I love Lee Jun Ki a lot more and therefore will root for Scarlet Heart. Plus it's a big budget production and the trailer was mind-blowing and seems very promising.
Moonlight may have the upperhand since it starts a week earlier than Scarlet but Scarlet's predecessor, Doctors is leading with the ratings so that may help to give Scarlet an extra edge.
Now a lot pay more attention on Scarlet since the released of the trailer and I hope the drama will be very good.

Ya. I agree that she's a better choice than IU except that she's too young.
But I thought Moon Geun Young was much younger than Park Shin Yang when they paired up in Painter of The Wind.so may be, KYJ and LJK may not br that bad as a pair.
But from the trailer, IU seems to be doing fine even in emotional scenes. Fingers crossed that Scarlet will turn out well.

Yes Kim Yoo-jung is still too young. Moon was 21 at the time so it wasn't a big deal. She was an adult and boy did she rock her role and walked away with the Daesang award for that year.
Kim Yoo-jung is turning 17 right when Moonlight airs. (5 more years maybe?).

IU has always been a good actress, she really came into her own the minute drama writers gave her more room to play.
Which is why the vitriol when she was cast puzzled me so, considering she'd just had a very well-received (plenty of praise AND the ratings peaks for the second half of the drama all happened during her scenes) turn on Producers. She was the best thing about that drama, hands down.

June 29, 2016 at 1:08 PM
She looks great in the trailer and she is going to be fine. It's not a traditional sageuk and she can be a bit awkward in the beginning because she is a modern girl.
The transition from modern Korea to Goryeo will be my fav part because once she gets settled, it might get all heavy and serious from there.

It's been a while where I've gone into a drama already loving both of the leads, so I'm relieved that they match, not only in chemistry but visually as well.
But what I'm really curious about is that apparently PBG's Prince Hyomyeong died young? All promos have indicated this is lighthearted youth sageuk fare, but a conventional happy ending wouldn't exactly work when one half of the couple is, well, dead.

I think huge age gap between the leads has been around for a while, most notably was Yoona and Lee Bumsoo during Prime Minister and I. even that got a lot of buzz back then.
It's just becomes hot topic now because the lead females are still underage.
As for my own opinion, I'm fine with the age gap (PBG and KYJ's age gap isn't that big, honestly) as long as they don't force underage to get chummy with the male lead.

yeah, this is really a 'lesser of the evils' situation - and while we all knew the Kims were going to come for those lead roles the minute they reached full height, the age-inappropriate pairings are a side effect we didn't reckon with, and I hope they cease.
This particular one is actually the least objectionable so far when it's come to casting underage actresses with older actors - but it's still not cool.
I'm ok with age gaps up to 6 years because that's the upper and lower limit of adolescence/teen years, but beyond that.... NOPE.

A six-year gap betveen actors if the younger one is in her late teens, is a LOT less squicky than the 10-15 year gaps of certain other recent dramas.

it's worth pointing out that the age gap between Kim Yoo-jung and Park Bo-gum is the exact same as between her and Lee Min-ho '93 - and people have been shipping her with the latter guy for years since Moon/Sun (never got the appeal, myself).
Not to mention, she was paired with Baro in Angry Mom, who's a full 8 years older than her and looked every day of it, and no one really blinked at that since things remained chaste.
But there's still a vast difference in the level of inappropriateness when it comes to pairing up a 16 year old with a 22 year old, vs a barely 15 year old with a 30 year old.

Actually she is playing 17 year old character, while Bo Gum aged down to play 19 year old. I have no idea if it was still considered as underage at that time but it's coming of age genre so it doesn't feel out of place to me. Still I do understand your concern.

Some of the fans want them to be paired up anyway and some were also bummed that Yoojung turned down the leading role in Sassy Go, Go. I wouldn't worry about the casting for Bride of the Water God. There's a lot of skinship in the manhwa, and I think people would throw a fit if the actress and actor weren't appropriate ages. The story definitely isn't suitable for young actresses whereas the dramas the three Kims are in don't seem to be big on the romance (not so sure of Moonlight, but PBG and KYJ are closer in age).

the Moonlight manhwa apparently had a lot of skinship too (couple taking baths together and such) and yet they cast Kim Yoo-jung.
Bride of the Water God had some major skinship but it was quite spread out iirc. And it most definitely is a romance manhwa, though who knows how it'll look after the setting change. The main reason I was looking forward to it was the costumes and potential chemistry, but I just hope they cast right and that tvN does not see this as a window of opportunity to shove some talentless idol in the lead (after what they did with Bring It On Ghost and the Cheese mess, I really don't trust them)

i read some info about the prince and he's died at young age but he's great at musical instruments & Arts. PBG also learned idk what's call lol but it's same thing KSH played in Moon Embrace the Sun.
A part of me want the plot will be tragic even tho it was promoted as romance drama lol maybe because i know bogum's good at crying scene HAHA. baby i wanna see you cry in some ways XD i dont mind the age gap coz actually they all look young and it's KBS so the most intimating scene will be just like Dream High's.

Gayageum :). I won't be surprise if he turns out to be a hopeless romantic in the drama.
He was in his 20s when he died. There's plenty to work with during his early years. He was also ruling the country as a regent.
Kim's character is supposed to be 17 or 18 so there is plenty of story to tell.

TBH I'm not a fan of teen actress. I am OK if they are just playing the young version. But nvm, these two look adorable. I remember this girl as young Dong Yi. Will Dee the trailer first before decode to commit with the drama ?

Why do the men always look 10000x hotter when they're in hanboks (especially royal robes)?? *fans self*
I swear I never actually crazily head over heels over Park Bo Gum, but this drama may change my mind.. Gonna watch it and Scarlet Heart for sure.
I love being tortured by so many sageuks available this year!

Honestly? There's no way you can pass Kim Yoo Jung off as a boy. Her face is too feminine.

When was the last time ANY sageuk cross-dresser actually looked like a boy, though?
The funny thing is that Kim Yoo-jung has an oppa who looks like the spitting image of her but with short hair. It's actually like looking at a boy version of her!

Sorry, If I'm not mistaken, in the novel Hong Ra On is supposed to have that 'peerless beauty', isn't she? I heard that's why Korean fans didn't like it when KGE reportedly considering the role, because she might be looked manly instead of pretty.

Kim Yoo Jung is so beautiful ?
Another drama I'm looking forward to! I want August to come faster. But not too fast as it would mean I have to start my university again lol.
P.S. Just heard Seo In Guk is up for the male lead in Shopping King Louie. Yay! Kind of funny the role was first offered to Btob Sungjae who is considered his look alike ?

Finally, two of my favorites! I love their smiles, so adorable and undeniable and full of cuteness. I see KYJ's smile is very similar with Ra On in one of the novel illustration. And also their height differences! I can already see sparks fly between them. I guess they will tone down the romance part a bit since KYJ is still underage. But, is it too much if I wish that Lee Yeong will be as romantic as teenage Lee Hwon? It doesn't matter for me if they will only show us innocent and cute romance like teenage part of TMTETS.
I think the casts of Moonlight are good and I'm not too worry about the ratings. Hopefully the storyline will be good. I can't fully erase the vampire scholar disaster from my mind.

Not to burst anyone's bubble here but I'm just surprised at how no one in the comments is commenting on the age difference. When DB posted about Bring it On Ghost, Mirror of the Witch, Beautiful Mind, etc. Everyone was so perplexed by the actors and actresses age difference. But, on this post no one bats an eye..

it's probably because a 6 year age difference isn't that much compared to those other dramas you mentioned.
sure she's 16 and still a minor. but so was suzy when she was in dream high. and she kissed both soohyun and taecyeon who were 6 years older than her. but no one has a problem with that.

Ugh. Just because no one seemed to have a problem with soohyun/taecyeon kissing/playing love interests with suzy doesn't mean it wasn't wrong. What kind of logic is that?

You are reading this the wrong way, dear. Im not saying that its either wrong or right. Im just pointing out the hypocrisy of some people of being okay with certain things then suddenly not okay with something similar.
I think it all has something to do with image and perception. Kim Yoojung has a strong childhood actress image. So people find it hard to look past that. While people are more forgiving of Suzy's situation as she was a new face.
Pretty much the same with Park Bogum whom people find to have an adult and mature image due to his prev roles when he is actually quite young in real life. Its like comparing Jisoo and Bogum. They are the same age. But Jisoo has a strong image of being a high school student in his dramas so people are more relaxed when it comes to him and Kim Sohyun. So yes, it is all hypocrisy.

honestly, i think it is only the international fans/viewers who are making a fuss about age differences and such. while korean fans are honestly really thrilled about the casting. so i don't know why some are being over-the-top about it. it's a youth romance. note the term: youth. so i assume that the romance is gonna be really sweet and innocent and appropriate for the actors as well as for their characters, seeing as their character ages are young as well (17 & 20). you can't expect a 17 year old to have a hardcore passionate romance, do you?

This may be idealistic of me, but I'd like to see one sageuk where the wives have a friendship going on rather than a rivalry. I'm actually hoping that might happen here, but *shrug* It can and does happen in real life. I've heard of some co-wives, even historically, who found their relationship meant more to them than even their husband. That could be fun to see, too.
