52nd Baeksang Arts Awards: TV Section

The 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards ceremony was held on June 3, 2016 to award the biggest projects of the past year in film and television. We’re trying something new this year and breaking up the awards post into two sections, because these things just get insanely long, and we don’t want anyone getting scrolling-induced injuries. And because the Baeksangs already split their awards into film and TV, that’s how the two posts are divided. Here’s the other half: 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards: Film Section.

The Baeksangs are among the most prestigious awards in film and television, and one of the rare ceremonies that actually looks at the entire drama landscape (including cable stations) when selecting its winners, which gives the trophies an industry cache that an end-of-year KBS/MBC/SBS award can’t. Whether or not I agree with the winners from year to year, it’s the set of drama awards that actually tries to award the best of the best, and that makes it the highlight of the awards season, even if it is the lone ceremony held in the spring/summer.

This year the Daesang (Grand Prize) went to a project rather than an actor or director — KBS’s mega-hit Descended From the Sun walked away the big winner of the night, with its stars each taking home popularity awards and Global Star awards. I get why Descended was awarded, since that show was such a global phenomenon, though it kind of takes the steam out of tvN’s Signal winning Best Drama… which kind of makes it second-best drama, which is just not true.

But hey, Signal’s writer Kim Eun-hee won for best screenplay, and Kim Hye-soo took home the top actress award for her performance, so it got plenty of recognition. Yoo Ah-in won the top actor award over fellow nominees Jo Jin-woong, Song Joong-ki, Namgoong Min, and Joo-won, which was a bit of a surprise (I actually expected him to win in the film section instead); and Ryu Joon-yeol and Kim Go-eun each took home New Actor awards (yay!). I also clapped to see that King of Masked Singers won as best variety program, because I am inexplicably addicted to that show. Okay, on to the winners and the red carpet!

WINNERS LIST: TV SECTION

Daesang: Descended From the Sun
Best Drama: Signal
Variety Program: King of Masked Singers
Educational Program: Examination
Directing: Shin Won-ho (Answer Me 1988)
Top Excellence, Actor: Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons)
Top Excellence, Actress: Kim Hye-soo (Signal)
New Actor: Ryu Joon-yeol (Answer Me 1988)
New Actress: Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap)
Variety, Male Performer: Kim Gu-ra
Variety, Female Performer: Kim Sook
Scriptwriting: Kim Eun-hee (Signal)
Popularity Award, Actor: Song Joong-ki (Descended From the Sun)
Popularity Award, Actress: Song Hye-gyo (Descended From the Sun)
InStyle Award: Park Bo-gum, Bae Suzy
iQiyi Global Star Award: Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-gyo

The night’s big winners, Descended From the Sun’s Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo, who look about as perfect as can be in all-black and all-white. They look like they’re arriving for their wedding, and the effect is flawless. Like we expected anything less, right?

Yoo Ah-in bested his buddy Song Joong-ki for the Top Excellence award for his performance SBS’s epic sageuk Six Flying Dragons, and looks fantastic. Sometimes I question Yoo Ah-in’s fashion taste, but in a tux on the red carpet, he is always stunning. Between the Baeksangs and the Blue Dragons, Yoo Ah-in basically dominated film and TV this past year. Going off to army with one trophy for The Throne/Sado and another for Six Flying Dragons is pretty much like winning the lotto. Twice.

Six Flying Dragons co-star Byun Yo-han, who still insists on having that hair. I miss his scruffy warrior look, but I love him all the same. He was nominated in the New Actor category, even though he’s not really new.

I’m frankly a little heartbroken that Jo Jin-woong didn’t win Best Actor for Signal, because he was just so good. He was nominated in the film section as well, for his supporting role in Assassination, but didn’t take home any trophies. There’s always next year, and he’ll probably have another fifteen projects to choose from by then.

Kim Hye-soo went with a black mermaid gown and cape-jacket to pick up her Top Excellence award for her performance in Signal. I think I prefer her usual sexy va-va-voom dresses to this look, but I’m just happy she won in the category, because she was aces.

WHYYYYYYY, Kim Go-eun, whyyyyyy. You are so young and beautiful. Why are you wearing this frumpy dress, and with those shoes? It makes me sad because I adore her and I’m so happy for her win, but that dress needs to go.

It’s so cute to see Kim Go-eun’s Cheese in the Trap co-star Lee Sung-kyung cheering for her win, especially when their characters were so antagonistic towards each other in the drama, and Lee Sung-kyung was a fellow nominee in the New Actress category for Queen’s Flower. Lee looks stunning on the red carpet in a sheer white gown (with stars!) and a simple headband. Her makeup is perfect, and the overall effect is somehow sexy and sweet, all at once.

Joo-won was nominated for Yong-pal, and looks poised on the red carpet in a classic tux. Like he always does, every time. I think I prefer his hair coiffed up though, because those are the times I look at his photos and go, “Woooooooooow.”

Hyeri was nominated in the New Actress category for Answer Me 1988, and looks pretty in a sleek ponytail and white gown. I don’t love the dress — it’s nice, and it fits perfectly, but there’s nothing special about it. I want to see her in red, or yellow, or pink, to suit her sunny personality.

Park Bo-gum looks like he’s adopting Lee Jung-jae’s style of fancy red carpet jackets, which is certainly fine by me. He was also nominated in the New Actor category, though his was actually for the movie Chinatown. It just seemed weird not to include his photos with the rest of the Answer Me gang though, since they’re kind of a set.

Ryu Joon-yeol took home the New Actor trophy for Answer Me 1988, and looks adorably awkward in his photos. The moment his name was announced is my favorite shot though, with his co-stars all cheering and hugging around him, and Mom Ra Mi-ran standing by proudly like she’s about to cry. Love.

Go Kyung-pyo, what is that on your head? Did you lose all your hair in a freak accident and paint some on with a spray can just before the ceremony? He was also nominated in the New Actor category for Chinatown alongside Park Bo-gum.

Lee Dong-hwi (nominated for New Actor, Answer Me 1988) is his usual eccentric self. He’s wearing a cummerbund, but the effect is actually like he managed to turn a tux into high-waisted ajumma pants. It seems like the kind of thing he’d do on purpose though.

Aw, Ahn Jae-hong looks so dapper! I love this. He had to wear the frumpiest outfits of all the kids in Answer Me 1988, but he cleans up so nicely. The navy tux is my favorite of the night.

Lee Jong-seok, who’ll be back with fantasy drama W—Two Worlds later this year, came to present an award alongside Chinese actor Wu Xiubo (Finding Mr. Right 2).

Kim Hyun-joo was nominated for Best Actress for her SBS melodrama I Have a Lover. The sleek, sexy black dress is a great look for her; I love the blingy detailing and the cut.

Kim Min-seok (Descended From the Sun) looks like an excited kid at a candy store. It’s probably his first red carpet, and it’s so cute to see him giddy and nervous.

Gong Hyun-joo (Falling for Innocence) looks nice, though underdressed for the event. It seems like an outfit you’d wear to a friend’s wedding in the daytime. She presented an award with Lee Ki-woo (Memory). I just want to comb his hair out of his face.

Comedienne Hong Yoon-hwa looks adorable, though the outfit looks more like it’s for a tween. Cutesy seems to be her concept all the time though.

Fellow gagwoman Jang Do-yeon mugs for the cameras. Repeatedly. Somebody likes attention.

Variety mainstay and nominee for Male Variety Performer Jung Jun-ha, looking awkward on the red carpet:

Kim Sook, who won the Female Variety Performer award, with Male Variety Performer nominee Yoon Jung-soo. Thumbs up for both of their outfits. She looks especially good in the sleek black dress.

Gagman Kim Young-chul, who was also nominated, making that face he always makes:

Another comedienne and nominee, Oh Na-mi, whose dress looks pretty in motion but sags in weird places when standing still.

Fellow variety nominee Park Na-rae opts for a vampy look, which I don’t think works in her favor. It’s all wrong, and I really wish that lipstick color had stayed in the 90s.

Kwak Shi-yang (Mirror of the Witch) looks underdressed, but at least he’s got a winning smile and a great strut.

Park Ha-sun (Temptation) always chooses a similar pastel/white innocent look for the red carpet. So it’s not particularly exciting, but this one happens to look absolutely gorgeous on her.

She presented an award with Yoon Park (Come Back, Ajusshi).

And last but not least, Yook Sung-jae, who was nominated in the New Actor category for Who Are You—School 2015. I’m sad that he keeps turning down dramas. But it must be because he’s searching for the perfect role, right? You can be picky when you’re older! Come back soon, Yook Sung-jae!

It's confusing that they awarded best and daesang to two different drama haha. But i'd like to think that Signal won because it is actually the best drama among all in terms of drama aspects. While dots won daesang as a brand or product, with its crushing ratings and cultural effect within and outside korea.

For best male actor, Yoo Ah In is so deserving altho Jo Jin Woong is super great. His portrayal in Dragon is just so out of this world. 50 eps playing a very complex character in flying colour, he could get all the award out there. Although Jo Jin Woong and #teamSignal already won the daesang of my heart lol

When she sits Kim Go Eun looks okay but overall bleh that dress is hideous. Too bad Byun Yo Han doesn't get anything but he seems too happy watching his bestie won ? and Park Bo Gum is really shining that night, isn't he....

Actually compared to last year, this year's Baeksang made much more sense and I'm happy the best actor/actress wins in every category, I don't think any of the winners (for actor category) less deserving than the other.
I'm happy for Yoo Ah In and Kim Hye Soo as I thought they definitely win the category.
For Best Drama vs Daesang debacle, well, it's always down to popularity and ratings.
Signal maybe the Best Drama of the year in terms of quality, but we can't deny DOTS also has high quality production, gets 30% ratings, gets really popular in Korea and worldwide and much wider recognition than Signal.

Hmm, the good thing is that Signal is also getting popular in China now that a Chinese streaming website has bought the copyright. Its ratings on CNet is the highest any drama has gotten and many people are watching because of the positive word-of-mouth. It may not be as crazily popular as DOTS, and the reaction may be delayed, but it's heartening to know that good quality dramas still get noticed despite the significantly darker and heavier subject matter.

Is it right?? Congrats to Signal!
I'm always happy when shows like Signal or Misaeng that have heavier subject matter become popular. It's good to have variety of dramas! And one thing, quality-wise, Signal is better than other dramas this year.

Actually, Chinese media are starting to question the validity of DOTS winning Daesang. And most k-drama fans that I know in weibo didn't think that DOTS deserve Daesang either.

Any other year I would have very happy with Yoo Ah In winning best actor for Dragons. He was great. But it should have Jo Jin Woong for Signal. That was the best Kdrama performance of all time in the best Kdrama of all time. That said, I am normally very disappointed with Korean drama awards, but at least Signal got some recognition and that makes me happy.

DOTS was great (I personally enjoyed it quite a bit), but Signal was waayyyyyyy better. For a start, the storyline was captivating, every minute was so intense. Needless to say. the performance of the casts was also near flawless.

So flame me for all you want, but Kim Hye Soo totally deserved the award as Best Actress.

It's always great to see everyone. A big "thank you" to Dramabeans for sharing these pictures with us!

A little dissapointed Six Flying Dragons didn't receive a little more love from the Baeksang Awards, but I understand how these things work.

Nevertheless, congratulations to all the winners!

TBH i don't really give a damn about song-song couple. Infact i kinda like.. what the hell.. when i saw SJK and SHK entered the venue together. I think it just a gimmick from the comitte. And look at how they arrange it so that SHK was between YAI and SJK. Man, not sure if I took Baeksang Award seriusly from now on.
What i actually wanna see last night is that everybody got what they deserved. Some did..some didn't.

That "Song-Song Couple" is a publicity stunt. And KBS needed them being seated next to Yoo Ah In to even make the show super popular, because YAI is very very popular right now in Korea. In their press release after the show, KBS announced the ratings was high thanks to these three.

Regarding Sungjae though, many speculate that for some weird reason, it's Cube Entertainment (his agency) that's rejecting all of his acting offers. His previous acting commitments were actually managed properly while doing his idol activities, which make many people think that there is something going on internally. *sigh*

What may be that "something going on internally?" I'm a fan of him and he rejects dramas because of his schedules overseas. They have a Japanese album released and concerts/fanmeets in China and USA. The thing is, his group BTOB wasn't popular much before School 2015. His popularity brought recognition to the group too so they work non-stop. Actually his schedule during the filming of "Achiara's Secret" was a mess. He had to film the drama and attend album promotions at the same time.

I think Signal or SFD should have gotten the Daesang award. There should have been another category for the most popular drama, maybe call it "the hype award" or something. DoTS was promising, for the first few minutes, but it was mostly too vanilla. They're trying to make it some sort of drama with thrillers but they failed. There's no real dangers on the drama, most problems solved within 1-2 episodes, the main couple fell in love within minutes. No real development on either of them. Lbr SJK is the main reason people watched it. (but i also have some friends who doesn't like him much because of Running Man lol)

I'm glad that they only won the Daesang award though. I really love Yoo Ah-in's acting and I think he deserved the award. Also Ryu Joon Yeol!! I'm glad that he's getting famous and showing up with new roles. I love him in his recent drama, "lucky romance".

I'm upset that Signal did not won the Daesang and Lee JaeHan did not clinch any award. :(
But I hope he'll still get some in the other award ceremonies.

Uri Yook SungJae is said to have declined 3 dramas already. Which is a shame since I want to see him in a drama again. But then again, SungJae wants to focus more on BTOB's activities and I love him for that. I think he was traumatized when they won a music program trophy for the first time ever and he wasn't there because he was shooting for The Village. Kekeke.
Anyways, congratulations to all the winners! Yay for JungPal, Kim GoEun!

Thank you for the recap! I agree, splitting the articles into tv section and movie section is much better.
My favorite moment in the award show was when Ryu Junyeol was announced as Best New Actor for TV series. When Donghwi and Yohan immediately went estatic for his win (yet they were also the nominees, hahaha) and Ra Miran looked really happy to the verge of tears, I felt touched. But then RJY sent a message for Choi Sungwon (who played Noeul in Reply 1988) that he hopes CSW will meet a miracle in recovering from his illness (he is fighting leukimia right now) *feeeels*

Lee Sungkyung's dress and make up was the best, hands down. She looked llike an elegant fairy. It's kinda weird to see real life Hong Seol and Baek Inha laughing together tho, hahaha. I wish Song Hyekyo's stylist could do better with SHK's overall apprearance because it's SHK, anything will look good on her and if you give something REALLY good she will shine even more! I mean, her hair? any accessories? The white dress has pattern of the fabric but overall appearance looks plain. Trivia: some Song-song shippers call the DoTS OTP red carpet walk as a wedding entry because of her white long dress. It was a happy day for Song-song shippers indeed :D

If anyone was to win from Signal, it was definitely JJW who should be recognized. He was amazing & made that drama a hit. So sad;-( He was robbed by popularity of YAI, whom has many more yrs to win best actor at a later date. Agree- Signal should have won top honors. DOTS is so overrated, bad casting, acting, screenplay, just plain gimmicky. I cannot finish the drama, it puts me to sleep everytime- boring! Best dress is SLK :-)

Signal deserves to get Daesang. WHY ?

It's because the idea is just "Out of the Box". Nobody can make this story, because it's very complicated.

Well, about DoTS...I think the story is just so-so. Nothing special about it. I even stop watching it until ep 6, because the story line is so boring.

The Baeksang Awards panels should be able to make difference between "Best" Award with "Most Popular" Award. -__-"

PS : By the way, Those 2 dramas are the dramas which were denied by SBS. They must be very regret right now.

If Baeksang wasn't compelled to give Daesang to Dots, the Grand Prize should have gone Jo Jin Woong.

Kim Hye Soo was great in Signal so she deserves the Best Actress award though I wonder if Kim Hyun Joo was just as good, if any better because "I Have A Lover" is the only drama I didn't watch. Not taking anything away from KHS but it is just weird that JJW went away empty-handed.

Signal and Six Flying Dragons were my favorites but I would say SFD writer should have won. I can't even decide which was a better drama.

It may make sense for Baeksang to create a new award to recognize highly rated and wildly popular dramas like Dots. How about naming it "Most Popular Drama" or "National Drama of the Year" The latter was inspired by fans who like to call their bias 'National Actor', 'National Couple' etc which by no means denote the best except for being popular nationwide.

Before I drop further comments, I have to say that IMO there's 2 series that excellent in every aspects a drama should has this year.
They are Six Flying Dragons & Signal.
From the script writing, directing, editing, acting to the OST and instrumental music background, ALL is brilliant.
More plus points to SFD because it also serves beautiful cinematography & visual effects.

I personally prefer Six Flying Dragons over Signal for BEST DRAMA and BEST SCRIPT WRITING category.
SFD was an excellent historical drama that gives you many intelligent views of political and humanity matters. Not to mention its brilliant speeches from various characters, such as: Gil Taemi's and JMJ's speeches before they died.
But, okay.. I understand if the judges chose Signal. That show was captivating and gave me addiction to finish it asap.

As for BEST ACTRESS, couldn't agree more.
Yes! Kim Hyesoo deserves to win that trophy. She showed us her A-class acting in Signal.

BEST ACTOR for Yoo Ahin. Another YESSS!
I would be pretty much surprised if he didn't win it. His Lee Bangwon portrayal in SFD was beyond excellent.
I like Jo Jinwoong a lot in Signal. He was outstanding there. But to say that he was robbed, SERIOUSLY?
If Song Joongki who won and people say that, I can understand. (dont get me wrong, I'm a fan of SJK but he wasn't good enough to win best actor award)
But it's Yoo Ahin! Did you guys even watch THE WHOLE 50 episodes of SFD before saying JJW was robbed?

Last but not least,
I want to comment about THE BIGGEST JOKE in this event.
Descendants of the Sun winning DAESANG?
WHAT?
Did they actually change the highest award criteria?
DAESANG = highest money-and-popularity sucker ???
Smh.

I'm glad that YAI won best actor. His delivery of Lee Bang Won was beyond excellent! And his range, praiseworthy. (I was half afraid he'd lose to SJK, I'm glad that didn't happen here). It's a shame SFD didn't win more awards, though Signal totally deserved its win. Everyone who says JJW was robbed probably didn't watch SFD from start to finish. JJW was excellent in Signal, and to be honest, I fell in love with both dramas, but the complexity of his character was no where near LBW's, not to take anything away from both actors, because they are both great and praiseworthy.

This is shaping up to be tVN's year - so many of its dramas recieved recognition and love - Answer Me 1988, Signal, and Cheese In The Trap through Kim Go Eun's win. It's high time, I say! They definitely deserve all the recognition they are getting now.

I hope for their 10th year anniversary, tVN elects to award past dramas that have done well like Misaeng, the former Answer Me series, Queen In Hyun's Man, to name a few, and not just dramas that were released this past year.

I am not a serious drama watchers. I do not see every drama so I cannot say that I can judge which drama is the best, who is the best actor or actress such a thing. However, I see a war between the fans. Everyone in the drama or the movie will try deliver their best performance, like the actors, the actresses, the directors, the screenwriters. For them, they are a big family that they may see each other in the other projects. There should not be any angry feeling and hatred among them. Why we as the fan create a war? Just any joy the drama they deliver to them. You may like this one or that one. But other people may not like it. If you look at the movies in the Hollywood. I don't know whether you remember Gary Grant. He was one of my favorite actor. He never got a acting Oscar only a honorable Oscar. For me, he is one of the greatest actor. However, because of his movie are more light weight and light heart movie. He never got a acting award. Drama or movie is entertainments. Just enjoy. you can say whatever you want. I enjoy some of the critic but please don't say any hateful things. Because we should respect the actors and actress as a person.

Basically Yoo Ah In is the big winner in Baeksang. Though he didn't win in the movie category, he won Best Actor in TV for SFD, and his 2 movies Veteran & Sado won an award each, even Daesang. So all of his works during 2015 have received recognition including himself.
