SBS’s Saimdang, the Herstory to premiere in October
by tineybeanie
Upcoming SBS sageuk drama Saimdang, the Herstory finally has a broadcast date. Well, sort of. Lee Young-ae had us Dae Jang Geum fans excited for the past two years about the possibility of seeing her come back to acting after a thirteen-year hiatus, and will finally be returning this fall: SBS has announced that Saimdang will air on the weekends, with its first episode premiering in October. Caveat: This depends on how drama broadcast schedules are affected by the special coverage of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.
Produced by Group Eight, Saimdang captures the story of a brave woman who became a renowned poet-artist in the Joseon era when females were viewed, at best, as second class citizens, and at worst, little more than property. Lee Young-ae will be playing double roles as the titular Shin Saimdang and a modern-day historian who comes across fascinating new aspects about Saimdang’s unconventional life in her research. This drama looks to explore concurrent timelines, using the present-day story to engage with long ago history, in a similar vein to Dream of 400 Years or the 2002 film Possession.
Saimdang’s fictional love interest, played by Song Seung-heon (When a Man Loves), is a free-spirited Gatsby-esque man who falls hard for the main character when one day she appears before him after hopping across his wall.
This drama will be 100% pre-produced, with a run of 30 episodes. Reports state that filming for this project is almost finished and editing will begin in June.

I was hoping for Ji Jin-hee. Alas, the stars were not aligned for this to happen.

Totally misread that as Jin Ji-hee at first lol. It would have been interesting to see the two of them reunite.

I used to like SSH but aftet the R- rated movie obsessed I don't anymore, I don't understand why he even did that movie, it wasn't that great of a story to begin with like Frozen Flower the sex scenes were on point and i felt it's needed I didn't feel bothered even though there was a lot, but in obsessed it wasn't that nessessary and very disgusting

I completely disagree with you in the appreciation of both the movie Obsession and Song Seung-heon's performance on it.
I'm thankful for the adult thematic of two married people going crazy for each other, breaking social norms, in contrast with dramaland heroines pushing 30 and barely ever kissing they boyfriends. A tad unrealistic.
I understand that the erotic scenes could have had another tone, they were shot clearly as softcore pornography, but an appassionate affaire without passion would have been pointless.
That's why it's rated R, to be able to express that part of the relationship.
And Song Seung-heon was fantastic, barely any dialog, you never doubt that he has lost himself in this relationship.
He loked almost absurdly handsome on that uniform, that's the only problem for me watching the film.

I didn't love either movie but they were both okay. The first few sex scenes in both movies to me were necessary to the story told but there were too many of them later on and, frankly, they were boring. I started skipping them. SSH gives one of his best performances in Obsession though certainly the movie isn't for everyone.

Okay, I'll say it ... be ready for a huge let down ... this kind of build up and expectations can only lead to heartbreak ...

I like the title though. The herstory. A nice touch. But honestly, I'm not looking forward to it. Never a fan of SSH and wasn't too crazy about DJG back then too.

...when one day she appears before him after hopping across his wall. 20 episodes in? Joking aside, SSH is been long enough around to not completely suck. Really looking forward to Lee Young-ae's comeback!! Totally stoked. Now hopefully, next and very soon follows a kickass comeback to Chungmuro. ??

I'm not anticipating this at all (mostly bc the story has hot mess potential) despite being a fan of lee young ae, but I admit I so want to take a peek if only because the teaser looked so visually beautiful. And to see her acting, of course. Hope it's at least a modest success for her sake.

I'm interested in this drama because it convinced Lee Young-ae to make a comeback. She must've seen something in it. Plus, I'm always here for strong female characters, which the lead seems to be.
