Kim Haneul eyes drama comeback with On the Way to the Airport
by javabeans
Kim Haneul is looking to get back to dramaland, with reports that she’s eyeing her first TV series in four years (since 2012’s rom-com hit Gentleman’s Dignity) and also the first since her marriage last year. The project is KBS’s On the Way to the Airport, which we previously heard was considering Choi Ji-woo and Lee Sang-yoon to star. Choi Ji-woo is no longer in the mix, but Lee Sang-yoon (Twenty Again) still is.
On the Way to the Airport features a married couple at its center, with Kim Haneul playing a flight crew member with 12 years of experience. The character may look elegant and soft, but she’s got a tough strength about her and performs her job capably and competently. She was the breadwinner for her family in her younger days, and is now married (Lee Sang-yoon would play the husband), a pregnancy having prompted them to tie the knot.
The drama is described as telling the story of a second adolescence for people in their late thirties and early forties in a realistic and delicate way, while also incorporating themes of Jeju island living and traditional Korean architecture and the lives of flight crew members. I know, I know, what a scattered description, and not one that particularly sings. But the producers have some solid credentials, such as PD Kim Chul-kyu’s prior dramas Hwang Jin-yi and Daemul; it’ll be a first drama for film screenwriter Lee Sook-yeon (One Fine Spring Day). Plus, I have found that dramas with hazy descriptions can surprise you by turning out unexpectedly well-crafted and thoughtful, in the cases where skilled execution far outstrips the basic one-line plot. So I’m firmly in wait-and-see mode here.
On the Way to the Airport is looking at the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot on KBS to follow Uncontrollably Fond, which puts its premiere in September.

Ditto! to Mikanjjj comment. She does look good. I'm looking forward to the drama. She's one of my favorite actresses.

I have this theory that great dramas have lousy descriptions because they're so layered and complex that the marketing teams don't know how to condense that in mere words.
Or maybe I'm just bullshitting.

Can you show us some example of "Great Dramas"?

I'll volunteer an example : I was a bit confused by the description of "Oh Hae Young Again" with the 2 Hae Youngs and then suddenly have Eric been able to "see" the future and worried that Eric has landed himself in a hot mess of a drama. It still has more than half to go to prove itself as a "great drama" but to be honest I'm really enjoying it, even more than some of the other more hyped dramas we've had.

"Oh Hae Young Again " is absolutely ridiculous. It crossed the line (the line that stops a comedy from becoming annoying) and became painful to watch (and it actually managed to do so from the very first episode).

Dude (not being gender specific here)...really?
I'm a latecomer to OHY but was surprised at how thoughtful it was.
For examples of what I mean, just look through the commentary at the end of recaps and the comment sections. There are so many that each page's comment section is pretty varied.

This sounds pretty harsh but I actually agree. Episode 1 had me scratched my head at the heroine's mom, but gradually the drama managed to cause head-scratching at every single character. I love the actors, but I hate the characters. Well, at least the drama is overrated so in a way, the actors win.
I'm only watching it out of curiosity because right now I don't have shows lined up for Mon-Tue. But I know I've got to really hate the OTP that I'm glad they are momentarily going back to their respective ex. Lol.

If you're criticizing Oh Hae Young Again for having ridiculous characters or a ridiculous premise, you're missing the entire point.

What point?

May 25, 2016 at 2:59 AM
@Sganarel I think the entire point of this comment to start off with was "ridiculous sounding characters or ridiculous premise that don't turn out to be as ridiculous as what the tag line might say". In my opinion I think OHYA is a recent example. To me the story and characters sound ridiculous, but it has somehow been enjoyable. To Me. And certainly to some more of the audience since their viewership has climbed and has just (sadly for the plot) gotten a 2 episode extension.

Lime Chilli, you seem proud of your opinion, very well (you're perfectly entitled to it).
Some objections, though: "ridiculous" is a pejorative term, while "humorous" (and some expect to see humorous elements in a comedy) has a positive connotation. No comedy wants to deliver ridiculous elements (unless, well, it's called "Oh Hae Young Again"). The sense of ridicule should be conveyed in humorous ways.
The problem with "Oh Hae Young Again" is that it conveys the so-called humour in ridiculous ways.

@Sganarel I like that drama, nothing to be or not to be proud of really. I meant the premise of the story sounded ridiculous, as in "not plausible" (hey it's kdrama so probably a given!) not that it is necessarily humourous in a comedic way.

She's one actress I'm very indifferent to. I have watched her in a movie and a drama and haven't been very impressed. I hope I have another opportunity to change my mind about her acting, the way The Girl Who Sees Smells made me appreciate Shin Se Kyung's.

It's true that SSK has changed her stiff acting but it didn't convince me i felt her acting funny and cute is forced, but i still finished the drama because the plot was good and i am a fan of Park Yu Chun, she's still on my try to avoid list actresses, i think watching her stiff acting in 3 dramas has a huge impact

I started warming up to SSK in Girl Who Sees Smells, but it was her performancein Six Flying Dragons that sealed the deal for me. She's a subtle actress, and like most subtle actors, are seen to be underacting when paired with actors who emote more aggressively. It takes the certain type of director or PD to bring out the best in such actors/actresses.

She's so dull. In A Gentleman's Dignity, in that spy movie with Kang Ji Hwan. Quite like Song Hye Kyo. Knows how to act but is still kinda dull. Hmm maybe this drama will change my opinion of her.

I fail to see what Song Hye Kyo has anything to do with this topic. Those people who keep mentioning her as being "dull", "bland" etc. seem, in my opinion, just to have some complex about themselves. Song Hye Kyo is absolutely gorgeous and her acting is excellent (refined and subtle).
As for Kim Haneul, she's quite good except when it comes to comedy.

I've only seen her in A Gentleman's Dignity, which unfortunately did not allow her any. I would like to see her playing something besides a 30-year-old 12-year-old, so I hope this doesn't take the whole idea of a second adolescence too seriously.

I, too, have no problems with Song Hye Kyo's acting or "non-acting". Yes, she's not as effusive and animated but I like her subtle acting.

Plus, I have found that dramas with hazy descriptions can surprise you by turning out unexpectedly well-crafted and thoughtful --> thats Another Oh Hae Young for me.
When I read that Eric can see the future I was like, what the..? Is it a romcom or supernatural drama? What's with drama these days, they're just mix things up to made it interesting.
But now I'm never missed an episode of it. Lol
I think Kim Haneul will look good with Lee Sangyoon(who doesn't?), I think they'll get great chemistry. I hope they both in.
And I like Kim Haneul as flight attendants, she looks beautiful in stewardess uniform in movie with Jung Woosung, Don't Forget Me! And I really love that movie, especially the twist in the end, it catch my breath.

Been waiting for news on her drama comeback, so happy this came!
She has done so many dramas but this should be her first in KBS if I'm not mistaken. Hope this will turn out really well.
Didn't she get married this year though and not last year?

too bad I haven't found her acting impressive or anything despite the number of films I have watched her in. Found her acting bland in My Girlfriend is an Agent, You're my Pet and My Tutor Friend (or maybe the whole movies were bland in general) but I liked her in Blind. I can't say much of her acting in A Gentlemen's Dignity mainly because there wasn't just much to do there lol
