Ha Suk-jin in talks to headline 1% of Anything remake

Ha Suk-jin, as Kang Dong-won? It’s a little odd to think of it, when you consider that both actors are almost the same age (Kang is a year older) and the original drama aired 13 years ago, but you know, why not? I’m all for a remake of the old-school contract-marriage romance 1% of Anything, which launched Kang’s career back in 2003 and was an early entry in the subgenre of contract-relationship dramas whose popularity has yet to abate.
Ha Suk-jin (D-Day) is in talks to play the lead role, a spoiled third-generation chaebol who assumes he’ll be receiving a hefty inheritance from his grandfather, who gets quite the shock when he finds that he may lose it to a complete stranger instead (Kim Jung-hwa in the original). It turns out his grandfather had taken to a kind schoolteacher who’d helped him out without knowing he was a rich man, and left everything to her instead… with the stipulation that the hero could inherit if he accepted Grandpa’s condition to marry that woman. The haughty, hot-tempered hero grudgingly accepts the condition and starts to date the woman, and his initial rudeness gradually softens as they fall in love.
As far as casting goes, I can see Ha Suk-jin suiting the role to a tee, since he often plays cool, brusque, polished characters. I actually prefer him embracing his comic side, but I can’t deny that his image is stronger on the “cold city man” front. I don’t know how he’d fit this in with the other project he’s just taken on, tvN’s variety-reality-drama series After the Show Ends, but maybe he just plans to be very, very busy this year.
The remake was announced a couple months ago, and it marked an unusual choice in dramaland to remake a K-drama into another K-drama. We’ve seen tons of examples of cross-format (or cross-cultural) remakes and adaptations, say film into miniseries, or Chinese drama into K-drama, or webtoon into TV show, but not so much the straight-up remake. But it sounds as though the original, though popular, was flawed with certain frustrating aspects of character and plot, so I’m actually pretty intrigued to see what a newer, hopefully improved version could produce.
1% of Anything aims to begin production within the first half of this year, so super-super soon.

She can play Han Hye Jin's character, the doctor.
On another note, I wouldn't really classify this drama under the contract-marriage category. the lead characters did enter a "contract" dating relationship; but when they got married, they were completely in love.

She is in Master God of Noodles at the moment, I doubt she will take this project if she was offered. Unless if this drama start the filming on July or August onwards.

Ha Suk Jin can play this role in his sleep since he basically always play cold city man character and sometimes chaebol too.
I'd love to see him reunited with Han Ji Hye (Legendary Witch) or Son Ye Jin (Shark). Shark esp just wasted his character :(

but the guy was not cold or cool at all he was burning hot, that was a lot of the plot right there after all, if they change him to the more modern type of jerk ie cold and mean it will not be 1% rather a drama just using it's name...well really that been pretty much the norm for remakes anyway.

For me, this show lives or dies by the female character. I love contract stories, and really, really wanted to like the original 1% of anything, but I could never get past the first episode because the mannerisms of the lead actress (Kim Jung-hwa) drove me nuts.
My guess is, they are going to get some idol to play the lead this time, (someone fresh and perky like Suzy) and it will be another pass from me. It's 6 in the morning right now and the idea of fresh and perky is positively nauseating.

Why not... It had many flaws... This can be a new step.. Where you take some of the frustrating failure and give it a spin and we can replace those horrible memories

Kang Dong-won was playing a lot older than his real age when he did this role (the character is in his 30s), so Ha Suk-jin should be fine.
1% of Anything was enjoyable when I watched it in the mid-2000s, but it did spin its wheels for a while in the middle. I wouldn't mind an updated version in the least.

I totally agree about it dragging a bit in the middle. I wonder if they'll change the story line at all. Hopefully they make the show a bit shorter and don't draw some of the plot points out as long as the original... I also loved the original when I watched it years and years ago but I don't think I'd like it as much if I were watching it for the first time now, so I hope they can make it feel fresh.

As a late arrival to Kdrama land I couldn't watch the original, i really tried but couldn't get past how badly dated it is (I just about was able to overlook the fashion choices for Full House)....contract relationships/marriages are my crack so I'm really excited about this remake.

Now I'm intrigued, Ha Suk-jin doesn't get to play the lead as much as he should.
One of the improvements that could be done in the updated 1% is a cut in episodes, 16 episodes would be just right for that plot.
Also can Han Hye-jin come back but as the lead this time. xD

I want Song Ha Yoon as the co-star. How many episode will be this drama? If it 16 it will be like among few episodes where HSJ used to.

I love Ha Suk Jin more when watching him in Problematic Men ( I really hope someone sub this show ?) so I'm really hope I will love this remake drama.

The variety drama he's gonna be in wants to be 100% preproduced. Hope the schedules for both of these are clear so he doesn't run into the same problems as Park So Dam.

If I remember correctly, 1% of Anything is actually far more enlightened than a lot of recent romantic dramas, with both the chaebol and the middle-class families presented as real people with real jobs and lives and concerns. E.g. the Kang Dong-won character was grouchy but not at all spoilt; he worked hard and didn't expect handouts from his grandfather - though of course he objected to all the money going to a total stranger. Much as I adored Marriage Contract, it's weird that the Lee Seo-jin character could have his credit cards cancelled by his dad in 2016, when the rich young men in 1% of Anything seemed pretty independent in 2003.
It was also nice to have a heroine who had absolutely no desire or need for a dashing rich guy to sweep her off her feet. Actually, the highlight of the show for me was not the romance but the heroine's family, an uncommonly open-hearted lot who thought nothing of picking up waifs and strays from all over the place and giving them a loving home. Anyway, my hopes for this remake aren't high - I just hope it doesn't regress TOO much.

Chairman Han(JH's dad) asked a gov't official(prosecutor?) to cancel the credit cards to avoid JH from being fooled by HS. Dad basically *protected* him from HS which is absolutely absurd.
So the reason was definitely acceptable for me.

I haven't seen the original of this but Shining Inheritance sounds very much like this show. I really liked that show, so I will probably like this show. I've actually not seen Ha Suk-Jin in anything but he certainly is pretty!

Yeay. We get to see more Ha Suk Jin this year! 1% of Anything is a classic for me. Though it has flaws, it's still an enjoyable watch for me couple years back. I'm such a loser for typical dating/marriage contract dramas-as long as they have leads with strong chemistry, good writing and directing

I really liked 1% of Anything, although it did have its flaws. I think if they can get a good writer to freshen up the story and tighten up the episode length, it will be a great drama.

I love 1% of Anything because it introduced me to the beauty of Kang Dong Won, even though all I remember about him in this drama is that he was usually angry and flipping his lid most of the time, ha!
