Im Shi-wan, Sol Kyung-gu pair up for undercover prison movie
by girlfriday
Is it just me, or are there a lot of prison movies in the works right now? This new story in particular sounds so similar to this one starring Kim Rae-won and Han Seok-kyu that I had to look it up to make sure it wasn’t the same film with a new cast. This undercover prison movie will be called Hooligan, and is courting Im Shi-wan (Misaeng) and Sol Kyung-gu (The Long Way Home) to headline. The actors are both considering positively and in final negotiations to star.
The new film from writer-director Byun Sung-hyun of My P.S. Partner is about a detective that goes undercover as an inmate in a prison for revenge, and befriends the second-in-command of a criminal organization. Im Shi-wan has been cast as the detective on a revenge mission, and Sol Kyung-gu will play the mobster he enters prison to get close to.
The story will extend beyond prison as well, with the detective entering the criminal organization through that connection, and the movie will be about the events during his extended undercover operation. It’s too bad that Im Shi-wan won’t be returning to television anytime soon, but it’s just as well, since he’s choosing solid movie projects alongside veterans. Im Shi-wan is currently shooting the crime caper One Line, and Sol Kyung-gu has Lucid Dream with Go Soo and Murderer’s Guide to Memory with Kim Nam-gil on the way.
Hooligan plans to start shooting this year.

You're right the two movies sound too similar :O
Though this one also reminds me of a certain plot point in Paksa's show.

This would be a good choice for Im Shi-wan if he takes it. Sol is another recipient of the Blue Dragon best actor award in the early 2000s. A solid film actor.
Hope he is up for the challenge against a well established actor who is going to be the villain.

I know Im can definitely pull it off but...
AWWWW, can you even imagine that sweet little face as a detective out for revenge???? I always have to remind myself that he is in fact in his late twenties.

P.S. Partner director? I know I'm reaching but it'd be hilarious if this was the screwball version of an undercover prison movie. Think of all the off colour jokes! Judging on the casting, probably not, but still.

That was my first thought too... That it sounds like "The Prison" with Kim Rae-won and Han Seok-kyu. Why are the doing that? No creative imagination to come up with something new??

"Inmate in a prison for revenge". Revenge seems to be all the rage in K-dramas these days. You've got Goodbye Mr Black etc. I'm just wondering how much this premise can truly play out; viewers are not inanimate and receive doses as the writer intends like the syringe theory suggests-we are individuals and say how many times can you have toffee with different wrapping in the same day. Please, (fictional) K-dramas gods allow some original ideas to trickle into K-movi.eland

the story seems quite dark and heavy to have a cute-faced actor like im shi wan. though i never judge a character based on the actor, sometimes their acting skill is just so great that you cant imagine someone else playing character. but i just wonder if they will use his face for the story's benefit because the plot somehow reminds me to a japanese comic where there is a pretty faced teenage boy who despite of his age they put him in adult prison which one of the boss notice that this boy have a profesional level assassin skill and the boy use his fragile looking n pretty face to trick people.
yeah, now i'm curious with the movie.
