Descended From the Sun gets Chinese remake

Wow, that was fast. There’s remake talk already, when the original isn’t even done airing. KBS’s mega-hit drama Descended From the Sun might be nearing the end of its run domestically, but production company NEW is only getting started with international remakes of the property. Plans are already in motion for the Chinese version, and they’re hoping to have it remade in other countries as well.

The KBS series starring Song Hye-gyo and Song Joong-ki is about doctors and soldiers finding love while stationed abroad in a fictional war-torn country, and we have yet to see the ceiling on the show’s massive popularity, both in Korea and internationally. NEW has announced that a Chinese remake of the series is confirmed, and that they’re in search of production companies with which to do the international co-production. No timeline has been given yet, since it’s still in early planning stages.

While I’m not surprised that the production company is out selling their hot potato while it’s still hot — 33.5% hot (those were the ratings for Wednesday’s Episode 13) — I wonder if even diehard fans of the show will feel fatigue from too much Descended. Or is there just no such thing as too much?

I’m even more curious about this remake case when the production model for Descended From the Sun was to pre-produce the drama in its entirety specifically so that it could air in Korea and China simultaneously. Chinese audiences are already seeing the original right away, which makes me wonder if a remake will have less of an appeal. I can see the story being set anywhere (non-fictional war zones, for instance), since romance is really the heart of the show. The real question is, Descended without Song Joong-ki…? Why even bother?

"DOTS without SJK?...Why even bother?" that line says it all.

Weird decision tbh.

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but after watching the reading the recap of first episode, show didn't do anything for me. Is it worth catching up to it at this point or just don't even bother? I haven't been able to find anything to watch after AM1988 and Cheese in the Trap.

Hi Kent,
I was actually hesitant to watch DOTs at first. I saw 10 minutes of the first episode and read the recap. Then I went to watch Come back Alive.

I only decided to give DOTs a try after reading some positive comments here. At that time, DOTs had already aired 8 episodes.

The first episode may seem a bit daunting, but the pace picked up from the second episode. I'm blown away by Joong Ki's acting as well as the chemistry between SJK and SHK.

The story may not be as strong as Come Back Alive, but the pacing is great. There is hardly any dark moments that are too long. I think this drama had a really great balance of light-hearted and heavy moments. Whenever I thought things were getting dark/heavy, they would show funny and cute moments of the characters.

If you are looking for a drama that is easy to watch, why not give it a try?

P.S: I actually forgot about Come Back Alive when I started following DOTs... I watched till the latest episodes and it was only then that I remembered Come Back Alive... lol

(did i just type out 'super cute' and 'fluffy' about a drama based on war zones? thats either some really good writing or dumb luck)

DoTS really feels different than most K-dramas, it's a lot more like an American network TV miniseries or "event" show; it's structured more like a novel for television. There are big dramatic moments each episode frames while moving the story along. The characters don't have huge changes it's more of a story of adults who get put in a tight situation and they start to realize what their life priorities really are. I don't think it's the sort of show that lends itself to massive binging, each pair of episodes is like 1 big episode that I think feels satisfying to watch. The first couple episodes just set up the characters back in Korea, and then in episode 3 everyone meets again in the fictional war-torn country (this is the part filmed mostly in Greece) and they have Stuff and Danger happen each week until their tour of duty is done and they come Home to Deal With The Experience.

A good remake is possible but generally needs some time between the original and the remake.

I think Song Joong Ki is too fresh in everyone's mind and it would be a tough gig to follow for any Chinese actor.

I can see why the production company is looking at making a remake. Koreans have made some remakes of other (foreign) shows. And some of them have been popular, and done well commercially, whether we think the quality was good or not. BOF and Fated To Love You come to my mind, for example.

It is also interesting that the same production company was discouraged to do DotS in the first place, and that SJK was not the first choice. He got the role because other actors rejected it. In the end, all is well that ends well, I guess.

That's what I thought too. Honestly, it may not look like it to fans of the drama, but DotS without SJK can work. As long as they find one of Wallace Chung, Wallace Huo or Hu Ge, they'll get tons of fangirls tuning in already. WC even seems like a better fit than SJK really, since he's, well, more masculine looking.

Wallce chung is more intense than SJK imo, feel like they kinda in the same aura while Wallace Huo and Hu Ge more fitted to the soldier badass look, WH and HG already being flirty in their early drama,

but if one of them do that, I guess the big news is impeccable since they had lots of fan.
I like YSJ character and Song Jong Ki is well fitted, he make his own YSJ, but I think that some other great actor can make the role different

I find this kind of sad as it means there's really nothing to DoTs and not much to Song Joong-ki, given his DotS character and the acting it requires. Which ("the not much") is of course not true, having seen him in Werewolf Boy.

@ alua, Hi!

So I'm trying to understand: so are you saying that there is not much to SJK (in DotS, that is) because portraying his character didn't require much? And his character didn't hold or offer much in this drama? If so yeah, that would be sad.

I just think it's a role that another actor can play. Not every actor, but one with reasonably solid acting skills and good looks & the right physique. I don't think it's an iconic or unique role – there's a lot of 'stock' in this character.

I'm sure this role is winning SJK more fans than any of his other roles, earning him more money & better roles in the future, but acting-wise it’s not the most illuminating performance of his career (not his fault of course: the character isn't written in a way that allows him to show a wide range of skills –  he doesn't even have a 'character arch'). If he's irreplaceable here, it would be mostly for his visual charm... but that I find sad to judge an actor as good as SJK on.

0

Required fields are marked *

@ alua,

Please indulge me, as I again, try to fully understand (and not assume) what you are saying. This might be viewed as thin, however I can see how some might argue (based on some of the comments I have read here and there) that YSJ has had a "character arc."

1-The YSJ of epis. 1 and 2 (and beyond) was not thinking about how the relationship could play out long term, whereas the YSJ post episode 12 has been made aware that thinking (possibly) long term is a good and necessary thing for this relationship (and how to try to make that happen). We even see him in ep.13 use the code phrase KMY gave him (twice).

2-The YSJ of epis. 1 and 2 (and beyond) would not want to bring KMY into his world (and she was not asking for every minute detail of it, just enough so that she could know what she was getting herself into). It is also very possible that he didn't know how, at the time. The YSJ post episode 12 would be open to letting KMY in, in so far as letting her know when he is in pain (so she can comfort him as well), and letting her know when a mission would be dangerous enough for her to worry. He would also not always feel the need to cover things up with jokes and a facade. So in a sense, the YSJ post epis.12 might be more "real" to KMY than the YSJ of ep.1 and 2 (and beyond, I know).

3-The YSJ of ep.1 and 2 (etc...) might have wanted to protect KMY (physically and emotionally), however he might not have thought about how things looked like from KMY's POV. Ther YSJ post ep.12 was made to consider KMY's perspective and feelings, though he could still be protective of her.

These are the first things I could think of, and if I have more time, maybe I could think of more? I don't know. I need to stop here though, so I can attend to other things.
So some might argue (as thin as it might appear), that YSJ has had a "character arc" based on what I tried to present. In your opinion, it is still not a "character arc?" On the other hand, I do see how KMY (as a character) grew more than YSJ, in this drama.

I just thought I would get your perspective, once more.

Oh dear... I don't have time to indulge you unfortunately (I'm three weeks away from a crucial & absolute deadline and should not be here at all :-O). To make it short I find his character and its development pretty thin – JB/GF summed it up (for me) in their podcast: he starts out as an awesome soldierman and continues to be an awesome soldierman as he keeps saving the day. The fact that he gets a girlfriend along the way and opens up to her over time doesn't make enough of character arc (compared to, let's say, Jang Jae-yeol, in IOTL).

Maybe something grand will happen in the Seoul-set part now, but I wouldn't count on it...

KES wrote his part having another actor in mind and that's so obvious. Unlike Secret Garden, she couldn't "camouflage" her first choice this time round.

SJK is doing the best he can with this particular story and all the weird punchlines.

@ gpap,

About this, "KES wrote his part having another actor in mind and that’s so obvious." What in your opinion makes it so obvious? I don't know if it was because of a few comments I had read, however I think that before I watched the drama, I was under the vague impression that the role had gone straight (meaning being offered) to SJK, and so somehow, somewhere I assumed that the role had been written with SJK in mind. I actually just reread a comment written by one of his fans on another site who wrote (quite a few times) that the script had been rewritten to fit SJK. I don't know if that is true or not.

The earlier comment I made (here: 4.1 Ivoire April 7th, 2016 at 5:15 AM) was based on an article that was pointed out to me. Here is the link,

http://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/entertainment/descendants-of-the-sun-producer-on-k-dramas-unlikely-success-song-joong-kis

I find it interesting that you seem to be right on the money, though I wonder what gave it away for you? Also, I did not watch Secret Garden. How did KES "camouflage" her first choice in that drama? (I do know that Hyun Bin was not the first choice, and I later read that KES had to fight for him to be accepted as the lead actor in that drama).

@ alua,

unfortunately, the article does not say who they had in mind, though they certainly make it sound like they must have been bigger stars than SJK (at that time, I am assuming). What I do not understand is why they would reject the drama on the basis that it would be pre-produced and shot overseas. Considering where they went overseas, I would think it would be a reason to want to go (from what I have seen, the places seem gorgeous, especially the beaches, and the water). And with the drama being pre-produced, wouldn't the working conditions be a little better, compared to what they usually are? (another incentive to give this drama a shot?)
Well... SJK grabbed that opportunity, and we can see where it is taking him.

Well, didn't KES once have lunch with Kang Dong Won? That would be a bigger name that would turn down something like this (multiple reasons would come to my mind!).

But then I again, I don't see how (or rather, why) anyone would write a romance role for KDW...

Who knows who it was....

Now I am curious: I haven't yet seen a work with KDW in it. KDW doesn't do romance? (my question is about this, "But then I again, I don’t see how (or rather, why) anyone would write a romance role for KDW…")
All I know about him is that he doesn't want to do Kdramas (and some of the reasons are obvious such as the horrible work conditions, for example), and that he was in a movie with SHK (among many other movies. I don't remember at the moment all the titles of his movies, though I have seen them mentioned on AsianWiki).

0

Apparently he doesn't like doing romances. He doesn't want to do kdramas because of working conditions and because he likes to immerse himself in his roles (you need time for that, slow filming).

He also tends to go for substance – in the stories and characters. Characters you can chew over for days, rather than swoon over.

All the film roles I've seen him in or that I'm aware of (in terms of their description) involve roles that are complex and challenging. This role would be way too fluff/filler for him. His Shi-jin would be one that has suffered from some deep inner trauma that is slowly coming to the surface, not an awesome hero that keeps saving the day...

0

alua,~ WOW, the conversation is on fire!
I've also read about KDW, JJM (as usual) and some other names that sounded less credible.

Without the romance and with the first script in mind -the award-winning one that is- KDW might have come back to dramaland. Not even romance amidst any possible tragedy could convince him though.

0

Hun Bin was definitely the second, if not her third choice. I knew she offered Jang Hyuk the role but he declined; until Fated to Love You, he hadn't acted in any rom/com, ever.

It's my first time seeing SJK struggling with a role, trying to look older and a bit "broken". The original script must be about an older military officer who, I presume, has been through a tough training, has seen lots of ugly things and has already declined promotions -or, was it a doctor?. That sounds much more reasonable to me.

Definitely. I think it's a matter of a different portrayal of a character - Song Joong Ki's Captain Yoo Shi Jin is not that of a hardened, jaded soldier, nor is Jin Goo's either. Perhaps that is because of the tone of the drama, which has more of a humanistic and romantic comedy genre as opposed to that of a true war drama, but both of them are quite positive and idealistic with a strong nationalistic streak, and they are still very motivated and truly believe in serving their country and civilians.

But in all honesty and and as such, we have not witnessed any scene yet in which they are struggling with some of the true devastations of war - such as witnessing underaged children not only being the victims of civil conflict, but also actively being used as soldiers and weapons themselves. There hasn't been a scene where they have questioned their own belief and faith in their country as a soldier, which leads to a limit on the exact depth Joong Ki can really display through Captain Yoo. For it is pivotal that in many of the scenes of DOTS, the "higher ups," i.e. the President, assert the importance of civilians and regular people, while the "followers," such as the ministers, ect. are the ones who may be corrupt and not feel as morally inclined to protect them. There is a very, very easy dichotomy of good versus bad within this drama, and so while problems such as "following orders" are used in order to demonstrate Captain Yoo's struggle, they don't really show the darker side of being a soldier and the psychological, mental, and emotional toll of constantly having your life on the line.

And this is also why I feel that if an actor like KDW was capable of heading the drama, we'd have a drama with a very different feel and tone in itself. We'd have a drama that would portray not only the gray lines but also the various colours of being a soldier, but whether or not that would have the same appeal as DOTS would be taken into consideration.

And also, not to mention my disappointment at the handling of an arc that could have given Joong Ki a deeper reach when it came to acting, such as when former team members or comrades like Argus who began as soldiers fighting for their country turn around and become a patron of crime itself. Although I do feel that Joong Ki did a great job with this role and definitely deserves to be praised for the spark that he really brought to Captain Yoo, it is important to recognize that the tone of the drama doesn't lend itself well to discussions about nationalism and war itself, and will likely be more remembered for its gorgeous cast and amazing chemistry, beautiful cinematography, and fresh, unique concept instead.

0

Oh, nicely written observations.

<And this is also why I feel that if an actor like KDW was capable of heading the drama, we’d have a drama with a very different feel and tone in itself. We’d have a drama that would portray not only the gray lines but also the various colours of being a soldier, but whether or not that would have the same appeal as DOTS would be taken into consideration.

It would have required a different script – because if Kang Gong-won really saw the script of this drama as it's playing out on the screen now, I would think the 'black and white' is precisely why he would have turned it down... He'd want that character the struggles with the true devastations of war, that character that questions its belief and faith in their country, not the easy dichotomy between good and bad that you find here or the forever-the-handsome-hero that is sometimes rebellious to rules (but never truly so that it becomes his inner turmoil, which would be such a rich conflict to explore). That's why Kang Dong-won's character in Kundo was so fascinating. Because he was so absolutely evil and yet at the same time attractive and mesmerising that you'd hope for something human in him. I hated that character and I loved it at the same time – and that's not such an easy feat.

0

*Kang Dong-won.... not Gong.... early morning typo.... X-(

0

@Jamie: Too many wasted chances, I agree... unfortunately, this writer is not known for being "deep".

0

i agree that there isn't much to DOTS. it's very fluffy and bonny, but i wish we had more substance in the story. i still feel like we don't truly KNOW any of the four leads. this writer has a tendency to skip over important character beats with lots of gloss and glib.

all that said, i think song joong-ki is doing really well with the material he's been given. he brings a certain freshness that offsets the cringe factor of some of his lines. overall he's just very easy and natural in his soldier role.

I don't disagree with what you say about SJK in DoTs, but still think others could have done that too (a few Korean actors) or can do it (good Chinese actors that might be cast in the remake).

There's doing well... and there's shining. He shone in Werewolf Boy – not that he's irreplaceable there either (very few roles probably are) but that was a performance that probably only a single handful of actors (from his age-range) could have delivered.

Obviously all just my opinion. :-)

oh no, i agreed with that bit of your comment too—basically, i personally don't find song joong-ki exactly iconic in the role. there's nothing about his performance to criticize, it's very good...

yet i can still envision other actors playing his part. for example, i couldn't picture anyone but lee min-ho playing goo jun-pyo of BOF—i only watched that series once, but lee min-ho left a HUGE impression on me. who else could pull off that hairstyle? and there are a handful of other iconic roles like that in kdramaland, where you simply couldn't imagine any other actor than the original. however, i wouldn't consider song joong-ki's yoo si-jin to be one of them.

you reminded me that i still need to watch werewolf boy properly—i skimmed it but wasn't particularly sucked into it, and have been meaning to give it a second go!

This show has hooked so many people mainly by its super eye candy SJK, so I'm really wondering what would it be to have a Chinese remake on that one.
Plus, I found myself unable to think of one actor who can outshine Jin Gu's sass and SJK'S charisma.... it's a totally biased thinking.
But on the good side, Chinese dramas are mostly 100% pre produced and get broadcast 6 or 7 months after. So if we count largely, it may take one year to fully complete it... perhaps until then we would have forget SJK, perhaps.

Even if it's subbed or dubbed for its broadcast in a country outside Korea, there's probably a significant audience segment that only wants to see a movie with their local talent and in their native language (tricker in China's case since it doesn't have just 1 language). I can just imagine it now: Godfrey Gao plays the shady American arms dealer, Elvis Han plays the sergeant -- there has to be a flower boy with acting chops in China who can try to fill SJK's shoes too!

hmm, well personally i don't see why not. korea remade the original boys over flowers, and overall that went really well. it literally made an overnight star out of previously unknown lee min-ho and boosted the careers of most of its actors. horrible music and questionable story quality, but i remember finding it addictive as hell.

basically, remakes have succeeded before. and with something like DOTS, remakes seem inevitable.

A Chinese remake is for the Chinese audience, obviously. They have their own stars that they really like. To make it without SJK but with sb like Bolen Chan or their flavour of the month is the whole point, no?

Almost every remake of movie or drama is meh! I hope my country will drop this idea coz tbh DOTS w/o SJK is meh!

That's way too political to ever get approved in China.

I am not suprhise that there will be a Chinese remake. Concepts of Love for motherland, Love, Honor, Loyalty are universal concepts.

" I wonder if even diehard fans of the show will feel fatigue from too much Descended "

" Descended without Song Joong-ki…? Why even bother? "

those two lines from GF says it all.. even though I am a diehard fans of DOTS, somehow, I will be sick, to watch the remake. Since we will always compare it to the original version, which is SUPERB,..! so, I'm not really interesting to watch the Remake. i am sure, it will be not as good as the original one.. and the casts, I think will not be as good as SJK & SHK.

I hope the remakes will be better researched and more suspenseful than DOTS... I'm watching it just for a bunch of delightfully funny characters and the protagonist's sense of humour.
