Casting complete for cheery weekend romance Beast’s Beauty

Ohn Joo-wan, Seo Hyo-rim

Some early names ended up bowing out, but the casting is now set for SBS’s lighthearted weekend romantic comedy Beast’s Beauty, which earlier cast Namgoong Min (Remember—Son’s War) to headline, marking a departure from his recent scene-stealing turns as villainous second leads.

Baek Jin-hee had been considering the lead role of the plucky heroine, but she bowed out and idol singer Minah of Girl’s Day (Sweet Savage Family) was courted to take the part; Minah has since confirmed. (I don’t get it. This casting confuses me.)

Joining them now are two additions: Ohn Joo-wan (Village: Secret of Achiara) will be playing the role previously considered by Ha Suk-jin of the hero’s chaebol half-brother, while Seo Hyo-rim (Endless Love) will play Minah’s older sister. The drama is described as a cheerful rom-com centering around four leads experiencing the ups and downs of youth and getting entangled together in romance. Lemme guess: a set of siblings falls in love with another set of siblings? In the most dramatically complicated way possible?

I’m encouraged by the fact that the show is being described as upbeat and light, which takes the edge off the serious-sounding premise: A wrongfully accused, tough-fighting hero goes to prison, seeks revenge, and becomes a human rights lawyer and chaebol heir. With so many revenges in dramaland right now, I don’t mind one of them taking a lighter approach and giving us a broader tonal range.

Ohn Joo-wan is a casting I can get behind, since I do really like Ohn’s ability to be stern and intense one moment, and smiley and boyish the next; his character is called both “the most perfect man in the world” and “a tragic prince,” although I expect it to be more like tragic-lite. Seo Hyo-rim is also described as perfect, being blessed with good looks and smarts as the competent unni, while Minah is the the younger sister has a good heart and… let’s just say she has a good heart, ’cause it sounds like that’s really the one thing she’s got. (I’m still confused as to how you cast a drama where Minah beats out Baek Jin-hee or Seo Hyo-rim as the lead, but like I said, I don’t get it.)

Beast’s Beauty will follow Mrs. Cop 2 and premieres on May 14.

It's so obvious that her agency used strong arm tactics to get her the female lead role. She's certainly not good enough to headline a drama. Disappointing ..... Looks like I've got to pass.

lol Girl's Day's agency has no power like that, they are not SM or FNC.

And we beckon in the age of Older Men- Younger Women dramas.

maybe they'll have great chemistry and we'll all be shocked. UEE and LSJ did that this year and I think their age gap is similar to these two.

Gonna watch this for Namgoong Min only.

It's called a modicum of acting ability. Chemistry or not I would like the main leads be able to emote!! I am so cross now. Like all the other actors cast here.

Ohhhh I thought Minah gonna be his sister because Korean netizens kinda make it sound like that... So she's really gonna be the lead actress?

I really like Seo Hyo Rim so I dont understand why she is never casted as a lead. It must have something to do with popularity what with casting idol stars all the time (sometimes) as leads..hmm..

Seo Hyorim does get typecasted as either a bratty materialistic social climber or a bratty spoiled rich girl. I wish I could see her in a ditzy, bright, and smart role. She seems like she would do well as a romcom lead.

Maybe Minah is another Hyeri? I'm not the biggest fan of turning idols into actor/actresses but if they're good then why not? Fingers crossed Minah pulls out some real acting guns like how Hyeri did in Reply 1988.

She's ok I think.

Her acting is at least better than what Hyeri used to do before Reply, I think if Minah had played Deok Sun she would have maybe been better.

Hyeri is still bad, she only plays herself in Reply

...she only plays herself in Reply

Lol, that was my thought the whole time through many others have praised her and said that she's come through. We'll see in her next drama.

Thank you @Yep and @Peeps for saying exactly what I was thinking!! Hyeri is not exactly what I would call a 'good example' in terms of acting.
I liked Reply 1988 but I didn't understand why Hyeri was praised for her acting! As the same time, I have to say that her casting in Reply 1988 seemed to be a good move though, as her personality was close to her character's personality. Even some senior actors are known to only play characters that are close to their personality (I don't know about Korean actors but in France. it's the case)...

everyone does well in a reply drama regardless of how well they do in other dramas it's why the actors always end up in crappy projects after reply

This is a world that casts people like Suzy and that Orange Marmalade girl in lead roles beating out so many more talented actresses.... why are we even surprised.

At least her acting is better than Hyeri's but this is SBS weekend drama, it's sure to flop.

it'd be so great to see seo hyorim work her oddball charming alien who isn't really interested in hiding the fact that she's an alien schtick as a female lead, but i don't think she's actually talented enough to back that up. ah well, comedy's right up her alley and she should make a cute pair with ohn joo wan.

Good job for BJH to bow out from this drama..

I don't know about Minah's acting, but have a skeptical towards idol turn actor. If she can be better than Seolhyun or Jin Se Yeon, so probably she she is not really bad.

Regarding the casting news, in the interest of staying positive, I'm going to believe that maybe, just maybe, we'll be surprised.

But who knows.

My problem with this is I can't picture her as a love interest.

Like, an age gap? All right, I'm not judgmental and I've watched and enjoyed a few of these. I was all for Baek Jin Hee. A small, smiley girl? Yes, good. I like it.

But, I just can't see it. And I don't think it's because I've never seen Minah act before. I also worry the idol image will make her seem more like a kid sister. Even Hyeri has a bubbly kid sister vibe. And while it may work with those closer in age to her, the older the co-star gets the harder the romantic chemistry is to picture. Where as Baek Jin Hee or Park Bo Young to name another young actress seem like "old souls" so that picture comes easier. Does anyone else ever feel like that?

Of course, I am hoping to be taken by surprise. I'd like some revenge lite in my life.

I understand that people are rooting for BJH. However, she has nothing to gain from playing a kind-hearted character in the crappiest SBS timeslot right after her universally panned role in MDGSW. The girl has every reason to reject the role.

That was painful to watch. I kept going hoping it will changed. I cannot believe I even watched the last episode. That's perseverance for me. Just for her.

Sad about the lead heroine news...don't get me wrong,i have nothing against Minah but i don't think she is suited for this drama and wilth Nam Goongmin as lead....why can't they just cast Seo Hyo-rim as the lead...Loosing faith in the drama already and i wanted so badly for his first big lead role to be a success

I hope they have chemistry!

For some arcane reason, this casting is making me think of Modern Farmer - it's like a gender-flipped version of the idea behind the dynamic that brought us Honey Lee and Lee Hong-ki, only more so. ;-)

And while I thought both HL and LHK did a great job and were absolutely adorable in Modern Farmer - they had zero romantic chemistry. Right until the end they felt like bickering siblings to me.

So now I'm worried about chemistry...

Perhaps not the worry you'd expect to be first on anyone's mind, but there it is. :-)

How about a Really Old Guy-Young Girl romance instead?

He bends down to kiss her as she sleeps. He straightens up but C-R-A-C-K! something snaps in his back. She wakes with a scream because he's still there, bent over her, eight hours later.

He kisses her so passionately his dentures fall out.

She hugs him from behind, murmuring, "Just a moment...let's stay like this for a moment." The next day, he develops a really bad rash on his back.

He piggybacks her after she passes out from five glasses of soju. She comes to and finds out they haven't moved an inch. From beneath, he gasps, "Finally...you are awake...call 911...my back....can't straighten...."

Hahahaha

I would actually watch that as long as it's not too angsty. A romcom about an unfortunate oppa who suffers from excessive premature aging? Sign me up!

It's this drama which was first presented as an idol drama, right? Because I still can't get why chaebols suddenly popped up from the plot.

Happy to see Song Hyo Rim in this. I haven't seen her in a drama in ages. Loved the days she used to host Music Bank with Song Joong Ki and watching both wind up in 'Sungkyunkwan Scandal'. With Lee Chung Ah in two dramas this year, two of my favs are finally out of the dungeon.

Am I the only one who still gets Seo Hyo-Rim mixed up with Park Soo-Jin?

I've only seen them in kdramas. SHR in Endless Love, Master's Sun, That Winter, The Wind Blows, Me Too, Flower! and Scent of a Woman and PSJ in Flower Boy Next Door, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, The Great Queen Seondeok and Boys Over Flowers.

May watch for Namgoong Min and Ohn Joo Wan. I love Minah as a singer, but I don't know how she is at acting.

Story sounds boring though :(

Come on... I like Minah, but COME ON. I'm so sick of idols in dramas! It's fun for completely fluffy projects, but they're pushing out legit actors in the meatier dramas. It has gone waaaaay too far.

I'm sick of the ageist casting too. An age gap story? Fine. But more often than not, these idol girls are playing much older characters. There are PLENTY of age appropriate actresses, Korea, get your shit together. I already have Hollywood pulling this crap.

However, I might be watching for Namgoong Min and Seo Hyorim. It's timely that she got casted since I'm finally watching SKK Scandal now, and I actually found her endearing. Maybe they meant for the romantic rival to be annoying, but I felt more for her (and Chosun) more than the main girl. I hope Seo Hyorim gets to play a similarly cute and flawed but endearing character here.

Yes. I don't get it either, how Min-Ah ended up as a lead; and Seo Hyo-rim as the 2d lead. Just does not make sense. I wonder what will be the role of Oh Hyun Kyung in this drama....

I am happy I saw the drama before reading the comments or I could have been biased against it and Minah as the female lead. Thankfully, the drama turned out delightful! I cannot imagine anyone else portraying the beautiful, friendly and fighting spirit of that girl besides Minah! The netizens have to sit back apologetically because the show is hilariously wonderful. Its' my favorite weekend comedy thanks to the off the charts chemistry between the leads and the playful and protective character portrayal by Nam Goong Min! He is the breakout surprise to this comedy which makes you forget the killer characters he played in previous dramas. A good storyline adds to the joy. There are no fully evil characters. The romantic build up between the leads with the age gap is believable. Goong Min's character, Ahn Dan Tae, looks like the perfect partner for Gong Shim. I forgot from episode 1 there is a large age gap between the actors. I wash shipping them hard by the end of episode 2. Kudos to the writer. The lesson learned from this is to avoid extreme opinions about a cast and storyline before the show airs. So glad I did!
