Six Flying Dragons: Episode 49
by HeadsNo2
It’s here! It’s finally here! It happened, and it’s real, and while it may not be everything we dreamed it would be, it’s here! Above all things though, this episode is about choices, specifically the ones Bang-won has to make when it comes to letting go of the people he loves. His worst fears are coming to life right before his eyes as he comes to realize just how alone he’s made himself in the world, and like they love to say in dramas (but haven’t in this one, thankfully), he’s gone too far to come back now.

EPISODE 49 RECAP
After Bang-ji vows to give his mother (and therefore Nameless) proof that Bang-won does not have their best interests in mind, we cut to Bang-won talking about how he doesn’t have their best interests in mind. In fact, he wants Nameless wiped off the map entirely.
Since they can’t root out each individual member, the only way to get rid of Nameless is to smoke out the places they’ve already infiltrated, which means switching out all current court servants, cracking down on Buddhist temples, as well as merchant groups which are known to have ties with them. Only then can they go after the central leaders in the organization.
Meanwhile, Bang-gwa (now KING JEONGJONG), gets flak from elder brother Bang-gan for doing everything according to Bang-won’s wishes, making him wonder who’s really wearing the kingly robes.
Bang-gan gets it in his mind to do something about it, and ends up knocking on Jukryong’s door in the process. He’s looking to get Bang-won out of the picture, but he needs an intelligence network in order to do so—only that network isn’t so intelligent, since they’re unaware that Sa-kwang has found their temple.
Bang-won’s supporters update him on the search for Jung Do-jeon’s brother, and of the interrogation of Banchon residents, since they sent a messenger to warn Jung Do-jeon of their coup. Bang-won takes some time before agreeing to this measure, though he adds almost offhandedly that the leader of Banchon (aka Boon-yi) is not to be touched.
Poor Gab-boon, having been the one to warn Jung Do-jeon herself, is brutally tortured for it. Moo-hyul has to close his eyes to try and shut out the sight of her, though he can’t shut out the sound of her screams. Any negotiating on Boon-yi’s part to save her people falls on deaf ears.
Moo-hyul can’t stop thinking of all the violence as of late, from Gab-boon’s torture to the killing of the crown prince, and reminds himself to just focus on one step at a time. Which is why, when Boon-yi entreats him for help to stop her people from being killed, he simply tells her that he can’t.
He claims that because he understands how politics and power works now, and because Banchon was revamped with Jung Do-jeon’s people, there’s nothing that can be done. “You understand, don’t you?” he asks, a bit helplessly.
“I cannot understand. How could I understand that?” she returns. No matter what, she can’t just stand idly by while her own people die. Moo-hyul tries giving her the advice he’s been giving to himself—take it one step at a time—only for Boon-yi to dismantle that kind of thinking when she asks: “Isn’t this moment that one step ahead?”
Her words, plus seeing the state of Grandma’s tavern after the arrests, finally spur Moo-hyul into action. He haltingly confronts Bang-won about the people from Banchon he’s grown fond of, prompting Bang-won to ask almost mockingly, “Should I also practice politics with affection? Would it become a good nation [that way]?”
But when Moo-hyul says he wants to return to his hometown because he’s having a hard time, Bang-won’s reply is that he’s having a hard time too, so Moo-hyul should stop talking nonsense. Only when he’s outside does Bang-won allow himself to look the least bit vulnerable, since his refusal to let Moo-hyul go stems from his ultimate fear of losing his support.
Knowing that Shin-jeok is a spy, Bang-ji approaches him purposefully when he receives a proposal for the expulsion of Buddhism, penned by Ha Ryun himself. He takes this plan to Nameless, who instantly declare that Bang-won has outlived his usefulness to them. By arranging a banquet, Yeon-hyang vows to put an end to him.
Bang-won ends up witnessing the mourning process for a child killed by torture from the state tribunal, but seems to miss the angry Banchon villagers march into Grandma’s tavern to blame her for it—it was on her property that the weapons were found, and therefore her fault that so many of their people are dying.
Grandma tries protesting her innocence, but it’s no use. The villagers tear her tavern apart and look ready to tear her apart as well, though by the time Moo-hyul arrives, they’re all gone. Only Grandma is left sitting amongst the wreckage, and aside from a few bruises, looks no worse for wear.
Moo-hyul’s first reaction is to take revenge on those who hurt his Grandma, only to be stopped by Grandma herself, since she believes that she deserved it. She tearfully begs her grandson to leave with her now so they can live free, which is exactly the scene that Bang-won comes across.
He pulls Moo-hyul aside to tell him that he’ll find him and his family somewhere else to live, only that’s not enough. Moo-hyul wants to leave his service entirely.
“Do you remember why I followed you, Your Highness? For politics that would make the people smile. But, Your Highness, who… is smiling right now? Have you seen someone smile? Would I find satisfaction by being at your side?” This comes with a flashback of a young Moo-hyul pledging to Bang-won that he’d find satisfaction in serving him as long as he kept his promise to make the people smile.
And Bang-won, in a surprisingly heartfelt moment of selflessness, gives Moo-hyul permission to leave before he changes his mind. He also sends gifts to go with him and Grandma, which is the reason he was in Banchon in the first place. Aww.
Boon-yi catches him on his way out of the village and entreats him to save the people of Banchon, a request which he claims he can’t fulfill. He told her to do her best to survive, so why didn’t she?
To this, Boon-yi says that there was no chance for them as long as they once had ties to Jung Do-jeon. After a brief moment of silence where they both just stare at each other, Bang-won asks, “What… is that look in your eye? ‘Spit out Bang-won, you bug!’ Why not say that?” Has he failed to notice that Boon-yi always has the same look in her eye?
As for why she’s not ordering the bug in his heart to spit him out, Boon-yi only says, “What meaning would a childish joke like that have now?” Bang-won acts like he wasn’t at all counting on her to do anything like that, when in reality, he’s feeling more isolated than ever before.
That fear of being abandoned has always been his greatest fear, and it’s crippling him now to think of all that he’s lost—Young-kyu, Jung Do-jeon, Officer Nam, Yeon-hee, the carefree relationship he had with his brothers and father, Moo-hyul, Bang-ji, and Ji-ran. The list goes on and on, but basically, Bang-won knows he has no one left.
But to really hammer that point home, Boon-yi echoes Moo-hyul’s sentiments word for word when she says: “I will leave.” With all her people, of course—they’d leave and never come back. “No, stay with me,” Bang-won replies. “Marry me.”
Then, seeming to realize how ridiculous that sounds, Bang-won tries backtracking, only to be completely taken aback when Boon-yi replies, “I’ll do it. If you tell me to stay by your side, I will. If you tell me to marry you, I will do so. I will do whatever you say. So please… release the people of Banchon.”
When asked why she would make such a sacrifice for the people of Banchon, Boon-yi answers that on the day Jung Do-jeon died, she met with both him and her brother. She could’ve told them about the weapons cache then, but didn’t because of what she thought would happen to their country and to Bang-won if she did.
“Why did I do that? Was it because I love you to death, and did not care whether my brother lived or died? No. I did it because, if it was discovered that there was an armory in Banchon, its people would suffer. But one way or another, it still ended this way. Ultimately, the people of this generation could do nothing,” she adds solemnly. Which is all the more reason she can’t turn away from her people.
But that’s not good enough for Bang-won, since he remembers her as someone who wouldn’t give even with a sword held to her neck. “You told me that you would not marry me even if you were to die. You were like that. But… without any feelings at all, you would marry me for that measly reason? Why?”
“Because you are a man with power,” she replies, her eyes growing wet with unshed tears. He flashes back to when she’d first told him that, years ago, which is when he’d told her that he wasn’t like that. Now, he is everything she fears, since he has the power to make her and her people disappear without a trace.
This affects Bang-won more than she’ll ever know, since all he can think of is how he lived his life trying so hard not to be that kind of person to her. In that regard, he knows he’s failed, and so he returns to her after taking a long moment to tell her that she’s free to leave with her people. He’ll have them all released.
Afterward, he thinks to himself, “Moo-hyul, Boon-yi… I will get stronger now, won’t I? And… I’ll be lonelier.” Ain’t that the truth.
He seems to take Nameless’ invitation to attend a banquet without suspicion, and since Moo-hyul’s leaving him, Nameless sees this as a perfect opportunity to have Bang-won killed, and to blame it on Bang-ji in the process. Yooksan thinks this is because she somehow doesn’t know Bang-ji is her son, when in reality, she wants to create a way for Bang-ji to get out of the country. Two birds, one unwanted son.
Yeon-hyang tells Bang-ji when and where he can find Bang-won, since he’ll be the one to actually do the killing. She urges him to flee with her to Ming after the deed is done, but he tells her that their connection ends once this is done.
On the night before they’re set to leave, Moo-hyul and Boon-yi come to pay a visit to Bang-won, only to be turned away at the door by Da-kyung. He can’t bring himself to face them.
Boon-yi meets with Sa-kwang, both commiserating over their recent losses. She offers to take Sa-kwang with the rest of the villagers away from Banchon, but the swordswoman says she has something she must do the next day. “Five. I am going to ask five people to take responsibility.” Ruh roh.
Gil Sun-mi and Bang-ji also have a little chat that night, with the former waxing poetic about how there are some people in the world who use, and others who are used. People like them have no choice but to be used, but he has to admire his late (great) brother for rising above that and living for himself.
As to why this matters to their conversation, Gil Sun-mi asks whether the revenge Bang-ji’s planning to take is for his own sake, or someone else’s. Is he using, or being used?
Bang-won keeps his word and has all the Banchon villagers released from prison, and they realize once they get to the port that Boon-yi helped secure their release. Gab-boon is among them, though she had to be wheeled on a cart, her wounds still too fresh.
The banquet table is set for Yeon-hyang’s meeting with Bang-won in a rather remote location, with enough cover to allow Bang-ji to watch from nearby. At the port, Boon-yi wants to wait for Sa-kwang (of course, not knowing she’s the Cheok Sa-kwang), only to grow suspicious when one of the men tells her that she asked a lot of questions about the weapons cache just yesterday…
Moo-hyul, Grandma, and Master Hong all pack up for their trip, while Boon-yi receives a letter from Sa-kwang, bidding her farewell. And also, telling her that she’s from Goksan, which gives Boon-yi confirmation of who she really is. Coupled with the fact that she wanted to know where Bang-won was going to be, Boon-yi leaves her people in the boats and heads off for the banquet location.
Bang-won and Ha Ryun join Yeon-hyang and Yooksan at the banquet table, sending out their guards in the process. While they endure the most awkward few minutes of their life, Moo-hyul tells Grandma that he can’t leave without saying goodbye to Bang-won first. He promises to come right back after doing so.
Boon-yi sees Nameless soldiers near the banquet hill and knows Bang-won is in some serious trouble. But it’s not the soldiers he needs to be afraid of—it’s the colorless, odorless poison Yeon-hyang seeks to poison him with. The Nameless goons only want to remove Bang-won’s guards from the equation.
They have unexpected competition in the form of Sa-kwang though, since she wants a clear path to revenge when it comes to Bang-won. She takes on their whole contingent single-handedly, as we quick cut back to the banquet, where the poisoned drinks are poured…
…But mere moments before Bang-won can take a sip, they’re interrupted by Boon-yi’s arrival. She’s just as surprised to see her mother there as her mother is to see her, which leaves her unsure on how to proceed—she can’t reveal that Sa-kwang is coming if Sa-kwang is with Nameless. But if she just tells Bang-won that he’s in danger, it’ll do no good when he doesn’t have Moo-hyul to protect him.
Speaking of, Moo-hyul comes across the contingent of Nameless soldiers in the forest, all dead with their throats cut in Sa-kwang’s signature style. Now that he knows Bang-won is in danger, he starts running for the hill.
Boon-yi can’t bring herself to say anything too literal, so she chooses instead to say something only Bang-won would understand, in asking the bug that’s swallowed Bang-won to spit him out. It takes him a second, but he understands she means something’s up, and casts a suspicious look down to his cup.
He acts cavalier about it all, though his actions still arouse suspicion from Yeon-hyang and Yooksan. He takes her and Ha Ryun out of the tent for a powwow that’s really just an escape attempt, but the three of them don’t get very far before Nameless’ personal guards are called into action.
Bang-won’s guards are killed by the overwhelming force rather quickly, which is when Bang-ji makes his grand and violent entrance. He stops dead at the sight of Boon-yi, not having expected to see her here, and in the lapse, Sa-kwang attacks.
She spins with her double swords, cutting down the guards like wheat. She sets her eyes on Yeon-hyang and Yooksan, forcing Bang-ji to step in and fight her in order to protect his mother. Bang-won takes the opportunity to grasp Boon-yi’s hand and run.
Though they evade the guards sent after them, they’re unable to escape Gil Sun-mi, who’s fully ready to send them to their graves. Great timing for Moo-hyul, who remembers his last encounter with Gil Sun-mi (and how he was sorely outmatched), and uses the same move Gil used on him to blow him backward with just the sheer force of his strength. He’s learned a lot since then, that’s for sure.
Both Bang-won and Boon-yi are happy to see him, and Moo-hyul is just as happy to be back where he belongs. As to whether he can get them out alive, Moo-hyul strengthens his stance and roars, “WARRIOR MOO-HYUL! I will follow your order without mistake!”
“The Sixth Dragon: Moo-hyul, the greatest swordsman of Joseon. Future protector of the King Sejong the Great, Lee Do.”
COMMENTS
Well it’s about damn time! I guess this was the show’s last chance to introduce Moo-hyul via chyron before the end, because it’d shift the focus some if they were to have saved this for the very last moment. And truthfully, we all know that there were episodes which would’ve better suited this introduction, but it is what it is. At least he got it while returning to serve his original master and friend, even if those loyalties may change down the line.
Bang-won definitely earned more pity points for being rather selfless despite himself, even though he didn’t come to the conclusions he came to this hour instantly. It’s an indicator of his growth as a character that he went from being young and self-assured—yet so desperate to keep people by his side that he’d even gag Boon-yi and make her swear to stay—to being older, wiser, and in some ways, more resigned.
In his younger days, he would’ve done anything to convince Boon-yi and Moo-hyul to stay, since he did do and say a lot of things in order to keep the two of them in his orbit. We know as well as he does that being abandoned and lonely is his greatest fear, yet he held Moo-hyul’s well-being above his own when he let him go. He knew he’d be left with nothing and no one, but he also knew he couldn’t force Moo-hyul to stay.
This point was only driven home when he was faced with the exact same situation with Boon-yi, and after much agonizing, he still came to the same choice. You could see the internal war going on as to whether he could or should keep Boon-yi by his side by literally negotiating her terms of surrender, and for the briefest of moments, I really thought he would try. Not because he’s such a tyrant or because he doesn’t care, but because he does, and wouldn’t know how else to keep her.
So the fact that he let her and her people go speaks volumes to the man he’s become, even if that man is capable of killing his own younger brother in cold blood. What’s most interesting with Bang-won is that his actions would traditionally make him a villain, yet we’re given such introspection into the way his mind works that we can’t, in good conscience, actually vilify someone so pitiful. Maybe he is some sort of psychopath in his own right, but he’ll carry the guilt of what he’s done and who he’s lost with him forever, which is its own kind of personal hell.
Especially for someone who fears nothing more than being alone, which we know he does. Well, I suppose if he really feared abandonment, then he’d make it so that no one would have to abandon him—which kind of makes you wonder, with Moo-hyul calling him out for changing his stance on politics, why Bang-won is still in this to win this. Even if it comes at the expense of losing everything and everyone he’s ever loved, what does he think comes at the end of this road? Does he still think that, once king, he can make the difference he’s always wanted to make? Or is it just an obsession at this point, something he’s given too much up for just to let it go now? Only one episode left to find out.
(And also, I know you guys have been super cool about this thus far, but this is where it really matters: NO SPOILERS PLEASE. I promise I’ll get to the finale as fast as I can, so y’all just hold down the fort in the meantime. Warrior Moo-hyul, out!)

It was painful to watch every single one of Bangwon's people leave him. What hurts more is the fact that they're not leaving because they hate him. Both of them also went to him when they sensed something bad is going to happen to Bangwon.
Ahhh. When Bangwon realized that he became the person he was trying so hard not to turn into... Seriously, that song is on point! It breaks my heart and steps on what remains!
My baby Moohyul, finally! I've complained so many times for him not getting his title but I can't be any more satisfied than this. He said the same line as JJW's Moohyul did back in Tree. That's my favourite line in the whole drama!! Along with Song Joongki's "Don't move an inch!"
One more episode left! I've seen the episode but will patiently wait for the last episode recap. Or at least I'll try. Thank you so much, Heads!

I'm glad Moo-hyul finally got his dragon title but it felt halfass to me. They didn't have to wait this long. WAE? The other 5 didn't have to prove themselves first. (rant off)
I think I've memorized every word from Tree's eps 2. The confrontation between Bang-won and Lee Do. Still my favorite scene of Song Joong Ki in the entire drama.

It's probably because he'll be carried off to Tree with a much bigger role than the rest. I really don't mind it anymore since everything else was done so well.
I'm rewatching Tree AGAIN and it's funny how I find myself reciting their lines with them. I've seen it too much, I memorized their lines. Song Joongki's Lee Do will remain in my heart as his best performance. I've only looked at him as a pretty boy before Tree and that solidified him as an actor in my mind.

I know, just ranting because I still think he deserves even more lol. (Such a greedy fan-girl)
So I read that the writers are going to do another sequel to continue after Tree. The first thing that came to mind is how are they going to do this without Warrior Moo-hyul? Is there ever going to be a character that endearing?

I don't know what to feel about the premise just yet since nothing's been confirmed. Moohyul is such an impactful character that I think it would be hard to replicate the same adorable yet badass character. I'd definitely watch whatever they come up with though. HAHA

SPOILER (TWDR)
I think Moo-hyul's death was so unnecessary. I wonder if they regret killing him off. He could've continued to the next story.
Is there a chance that he survive? We didn't see him die right? He was just severely wounded.
Maybe I need my head examined lol.

As you re-watch tree do you laugh some times as you realise that some of the actors are playing opposite roles to what they were playing in Tree. The guy who plays the monk in SFD was a Milbon in TWD, The guy who plays Gil Sun Mi was a scholar who was firmly in King Sejong's team and The actor who plays Yooksan was Lee Shin Jeok in Tree. As you go through the episodes you realise that most of the actors are playing a polar opposite of their previous role. The producers must have really liked their acting in Tree.

So many Easter eggs! Even Palbong ahjusshi was Dahm's father in tree and Ddolbok's dad was the guy Sambong stole food from in episode 1 of Dragons! I just love it. Plus the names that King Sejong mentioned in Tree (the whole list of people Bangwon killed that he recites) are not just names anymore. We've seen them alive in SFD so it's a more heartbreaking rewatch.

Kind of a messy transition because they didn't think of a sequel back then. I think we are going to be seeing some of the same actors here on their next drama.
I was hoping Han Sang-Jin (Jukryong) would've kept his identity from Tree so he can continue Milbon.
Jeon Kuk-Hwan (Choi Young) was in Tree too. I think he is going to be a regular with these writers too.

I felt quite satisfied by this arrangement though, because his character was the one who showed the most growth. He was no longer the naive young man he once was, and he is no longer someone who blindly cuts down people for fame, or blindly following orders from his master. The rest of the dragons were already jaded by the harshness of reality right from the beginning, and they had their own beliefs about the system which motivated their actions. That's why I felt happy that Moo-hyul got his dragon title at this juncture, when he willingly came back to protect Bang-won after he had decided to leave.

Poor Bangwon! I felt his angst so much and cried for him. Yoo Ah In really did well in portraying the conflicted and controversial BW, that had me sympathising with him!
And Finally! Moo-hyul...given his long-awaited title. He certainly deserves it. I love his conflicts too. The morally upright warrior who hates to shed unnecessary blood. The actor did a good job too.

Finally too! Thought he would only get his dragon credit when Bang Won ascended the throne. Moo Hyul has come a long way going from the bumbling country bumpkin to a loyal warrior with a conscience. Nice job by Yoon Kyun Sang in portraying the character's transformation and inner conflicts.

I cried at the flashback when they showed all the people who have turned against Bang-won (and died) back in the days when they were fighting for the same cause. Looking back, the Goryeo period of SFD was my favourite part of the entire show, because the devotion and comradeship among Team Joseon was so touching.

Yes, CAN'T WAIT FOR FINALE! COME ON, YOU CAN DO THIS RECAP QUICKLY!
It breaks my heart to see the last few episodes of SFG. It's been a great run with the overwhelming and awesome support from its fans, and its sad to see that time has finally run out. All 50 Episodes have been delivered, each with great care and sophistication, and awesomeness. Favorite drama so far, and I bet quite a few people will agree with me.
Can't wait to see the final sword fights, if there are. We loved the cast, we loved the fans, we loved the crew, but most of all, we loved the drama. What a great drama run this has been!

I've been refreshing for this!!! How is it possible, that right before the penultimate episode, of 50 total, this drama still has it? I mean.. I love every second of this episode. I mean it.
He loves Boon Yi, oh how he loves her. The things she'd sacrifice for her people, ugh...just got me right in the guts. She still loves him back, though. She went back, even though she could've walked away from it all.
Moo Hyul just breaks my heart. I'm so glad that he ends up serving Sa Do. This drama gives light to that close relationship the two shows in TWDR. It's like Moo Hyul finally found what he's been looking for in a leader in Bang Won. It just takes one more generation, that's all. I love you for recapping this to the end, Heads. This will go down as my favorite this year, along with Reply 1988 that at the same time shatters my heart with its ending (not because she married the other guy, but because they didn't just live beside each other and forever after be neighbors).

I've nothing much to add, because my sentiments were echoed right there with everybody.
The side characters in this drama ... I never expected to get attached to them, dare I say more than the main characters themselves.
There's Ha Ryun whose presence I enjoyed so much despite earlier on, I found him annoying. Now I loved his crazy greyish eyebrows, his perpetual shocked facial expressions. There's fur-obsessed Bang Gan - the brainless jock - though he maybe bloodthirsty, provided comic-relief. Cheok Sa Kwang, Lady Min and to a certain extent, even Bi Wol, the Hwasadan spy.
I love to throw confetti at the writers because Gab Boon lives. I'll leave at that. When the finale recap rolls out, I'll bust out the big guns (imaginary fireworks and all).

I think we are as surprised as Ye-ri that they kept her in the show for till the end. I thought she was just doing a cameo but I'm glad they kept her. She is one of my favorite female character beside Lady Min.
I was very skeptical with Kong Seung-Yeon playing the future Queen Won-Kyung because Choi Myoung-Gil owned her to a t not once but twice. (First in Tears of the Dragon and again in The Great King Sejong).
Seung Yeon did well even though she didn't get a lot of screentime.
Ha Ryun lol. What can I say - Don't try to be a hero, live a long life like Ha Ryun.

Yes, I thought Han Yeri was a goner after she and Moo Hyul fell off a cliff. Her portrayal of Cheok Sa Kwang is very nuanced, adding more layers. Had it been in the hands of a different actress, we might not get to witness Han Yeri's fireworks inducing chemistry with Yoon Kyun Sang's Moo Hyul.
Lady Min .. Yes, Choi Myoung-Gil really nailed Queen Won-Kyung. I would probably never see Tears of Dragon because I don't have the patience to learn Korean to watch it without subs. But hella, I must have wept at her death scene with King Taejong in The Great King Sejong. To see her and King Taejong was simply riveting.
RE : Kong Seung Yeon, she is a rookie actress. For her first saeguk drama and a very important historical character, she gone beyond my expectation. Though I felt that she did exceptionally well in the final scene with Yoo Ah In. It was more acting she'd done in the total screen time she had.
RE : Ha Ryun ... Couldn't agree more.

Han Ye-ri just grows on you. I find her soo petite and pretty. The most outstanding thing I find about her is her voice. Its really soothing and unusual. When I found out she voiced the cat in Imaginary Cat, I totally can understand why the producers picked her to voice the show after watching her in SFD.
Gong Seung Yeon is a pretty pretty girl, she should do well in the future.
I’m just soo in love with YAI. Went back to marathon Jang Ok Jung Live In Love last year. Read in Allkpop he’s likely enlisting beginning of April. Just will just need to watch Yoo Yeon Seok, Park Bo Gum, Song Joong Ki while waiting for his return. Since Punch in 2011, he’s aways been my favorite actor.

I liked Lady Min's character. So far from the bitches in court in all those sageuks I've seen so far.
I'm pretty new to the YAI train, fell in love with him in Secret Love Affair (unusual since I really don't go for adultery-themed dramas.) This role firmly bought me a lifetime ticket to that train. Lol. Gad, he's leaving a string of broken hearts eagerly waiting for his army stint to end even before it has begun. Haha!

I hate to admit that I watched all 20 episodes of that-fashionably-messy-drama-king for Yoo Ah-in and Lee Je-hoon. It was a lot like watching Lee Jeon-seok in the kitchen-sink- genre-loving Dr. Stranger.
Since then, I've admired both men's acting chops. Although I tend to prefer both men in saeguk roles. The shallow part of me just loved seeing them rocking those saeguk beards.
Anyhow, throws thousand of imaginary flower bouquets at Yoo Ah-in for his portrayal of Yi Bang-won.

Loved the quiet, introspective start to the episode as Bang Won took stock of the fallout. That flashback of the celebratory Joseon team brought back so many great memories. Felt sick emotional watching the before and after comparison, if only they knew what was to come...
Bang Won's two greatest fears were helplessness and loneliness. Ultimately he went for power but that came at the expense of losing the people closest to him. Boon Yi and Moo Hyul distancing themselves cut the deepest. They are his collective conscience and a timely reminder of why he started on the path. For all the political power struggles, the main objective has to be improving the lives of the people.
It's lonely at the top for Bang Won as he goes full cycle back to his isolated Sungkyunkwan days. But at least he now has a direction in life, the all important task of leading the new nation.
The second half picked up pace with the Bang Won-Nameless showdown and a revenge-bound Cheok Sa Kwang added to the mix. While Boon Yi and Moo Hyul can't condone Bang Won's actions, they are still there for him in his hour of need and that is a sign of true love and friendship.

"While Boon Yi and Moo Hyul can’t condone Bang Won’s actions, they are still there for him in his hour of need and that is a sign of true love and friendship."
Yes I agree!
Boon Yi will always be his true love, no matter how many concubines he had later; and since Young Kyu's death, Moo-hul's friendship is even more important and special.
Now that I know what his friendship with Moo-hyul is like, I've come to realise how precious his gift of Moo-hyul to Sejong was. It wasn't just a transfer of bodyguards...it was the sacrificial gift of a loyal and stalwart friend, as it would mean that he now would be totally friendless.

In that era. It's amazes me how powerful BoonYi is. Even though she might not fully realize it but had she want to she can and are able to have as much power as she has simply by association to the ppl she knows even though she is only a commoner.
And yet the only thing she wants to do is to protect her ppl and provide them with means to survive. Why can't Kdrama have more of this type of female character.
Sigh.... This is the last week of SFD.

Tree is quite different in a way. The era presented in SFD is a turbulent one. Kill or be killed. King Sejong's reign in Tree was quite peaceful, well, until the killing starts, of course. It's more of an intellectual than a physical battle. Very enlightening and made me appreciate Hangul so much more. Lots of shocking revelations and awesome twists. You might want to check Heads' recaps of Tree if you're not too sure. I totally recommend it though^^

Tree was also based on a fictional story. King Sejong did create Hangul but that's not how it happened.

The way So Yi and Lee Do interacted in Tree reminds of Bang-won and Bong Yi.
So Yi was a commoner yet she knew how to read and write just like Bong Yi. We could say that grandma Bong Yi taught her.

So-yi could not read or write at the start of the drama. That's why she lied about the contents of the letter, remember? She probably learnt it after she was rescued by the queen? or princess? Sorry, I can't remember exactly whom, but it was a royal.

Soyii was saved by the queen, King Sejongs wife, but the one who taught her to write was Sejong. They have a conversation in Tree: Sejong is asking Muhyul if Muhyul remembers when they taught Soyi to write and Muhyul answers that Soyi didn't want to learn it at first but then became pretty passionate about it.

I liked TWDR, despite it flaws (common with Kdramas). It gave us a story of life after LBW became king, abdicated and his son, Sejong, took over. The Great King Sejong also did this and I liked both equally except for the stupid ending in TWDR, an ending like so many period Kdramas. Why do they have to spoil things at the end?
A good ending in SFD would be Boon-yi becoming LBW's concubine and then a proper sequel, like in Western TVs, where the actors come back and play the same characters. The sequel may have politics, wars and palace intrigues among the bitchy women from the Queen to the court ladies.

I'm also annoyed how much the writers are stanning their own work Tree with Deep Roots in Six Flying Dragons. I know it's the prequel yada yada yada but this drama is supposed to be about Bang Won and Moo Hyul, not Lee Do. Why does Moohyul finally get his dragon intro after 49 damn episodes and it has to be about Lee Do???

Finally, our Moo-hyul got his dragon title and I LOVED how he got it! I really got goosebumps when he roared WARRIOR MOO-HYUL! that was awesome. I was so happy and literally in tears for him.
Bang-won ah! oh dear Bang-won ah! He breaks my heart. We all know that being left alone and abandoned is his biggest fear and yet to let them go like that, his face conflicted and his eyes, YAI gives the best expressions in the best way possible, I just love how he makes us feel for his Bang-won!
I knew both Boon-yi and Moo-hyul would not leave him if they knew he was in danger and so both rushed to protect him, and I loved how Bang-won grabbed Boon-yi's hand before running, I died a little!
I so badly want to watch episode 50 yet I'm so scared, what would I do with my life after SFD? I'll just brace myself and go for it, come what may!

Ah, Bangwon. When he said "Will you have me carry out jeongchi (politics, 政治) based on 'jeong'?".
For Yeongkyu, Boonyi, and Moohyul (and possibly Sagwang and Bangji if they had lived better times) it was 'jeong' that determined their actions.
However, Bangwon, Sambong, Poeun, and Yeonhee, had no qualms about attacking those they felt great jeong for if they felt that that was the right thing to do ideologically. In that sense they are true 'political beings' for the '政' character used in the term 'politics' consists of '正' which means 'right' and '攵' which contains the meaning 'to whip with a stick'.
And all of this connects to the other things that happened in the final episode, of which nothing more will be said since Heads has said so and who am I to go against our dearest beloved recapper who has done us all a great service in providing us with a place to share our thoughts on this truly great sageuk.

The show to me is about metaphors. Though I read many posts that criticized the fictional love story between Bangwon and the fictional Boonyi (many in favor of real life Lady Min)... Boon Yi has always represented the common people. If you read on Taejong’s history profile and on wiki, he was a ruthless ruler who killed many nobles and family to subsist the throne but he was also effective in improving the lives of the common folk. Hence this metaphor was written so well and weaved as a love story instead. Lee Bang Won’s eternal and greatest love is his people.

Yes that's exactly the writers' intentions for Boon Yi to represent the common people! I know this is kind of a spoiler but I can't resist, at the end of episode 50, Boon Yi's chyron was 'commoner/people of Joseon - Boon Yi'. For as long as he worked hard to improve the lives of his people, his love for Boon Yi lives on.

@Fan:
Are you talking about this news entry that has been trending in naver for the entire afternoon of March 23? http://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=109&aid=0003284774
There is also another one that he is glad about the rating of DOTS:
http://news.nate.com/view/20160323n35067?mid=n1008
The context is that days ago he went to AFA hosted in Macau (he garnered another award there) and 8 out of 10 questions were related to DOTS. He said that he's envious, but he is glad for the success of both since one is a good brother and the other one is a good sister.
Interestingly, in Macau, when being asked if he will take a similar role like SJK's in DOTS, he said no since he doesn't have the good looks of SJK.
All Korean fans knew that he is being humble. The highest comment under Nate is 어의가 없네 넌 천만 배우잔아 [+1246,-101] "It's ridiculous--you are the 10-million (box office actor)!" "It's ridiculous" (sorry for my ill translation) is the infamous line YAI has in Veteran, which has gone viral and become the most imitated scene in all Korean variety shows in the second half of 2015. Knetizens are saying that there is nothing he should envy since he had an immense success in box office through Veteran and Sado last year.
All the comments under Naver are also raving about his performance in SFD, his signature self-introspective deep thoughts, and he incredible growth even from his rookie days of Sharp 1. They feel proud of him.

Hmm...Yoo Ah In has kind of "made it" in Chungmuro. though. Winning the best actor award at the Blue Dragon Award last year has set him apart from others his age.
The competition in Korean entertainment industry is fierce. Every few months or weeks, the media will produce the "next big thing." Popularity can fizzle out overnight. I just hope that he can keep doing solid and meaningful projects, like SLA, Veteran, Sado and SFD!
Kiara
March 23, 2016 at 5:24 PM
Forgive me for the poor choice of words. What I meant by made is when they reach the status of Ha Jung Woo, Song Kang Ho, Hwang Jung Min, Choi Min Shik etc. The leading men of Chungmuro.
It took a very long time for those actors to get to where they are at and these two young stars have the potential to make it (as solid leading men with staying power). I'm rooting for them and any young actors who has the potential like Yeo Jin-goo.
Winning awards doesn't guarantee staying power in the film industry. Park Shin-yang, Kim Myung Min, Choi Min Soo etc also won (best actor) Blue Dragon award but their career haven't been as solid in the past few years. I think Kim Myung Min's career is kind of going backward.
Yvette Hsieh
March 23, 2016 at 6:18 PM
I see what you mean here. Actually a big name like Hwang Jung Min is criticized for his choice of projects recently (especially with the controversy derived from the monopoly of "A Violent Prosecutor"), even when he's evidently become a formidable box-office power more than other Chungmuro veterans in the past several years.
At the end of the day, it is the work, not the awards or box office record, not the popularity or star power, that will remain in history. For instance, Ha Jung Woo actually proves himself through the critically acclaimed film "The Chaser" directly by Nan Hong-jin. Nobody will care or remember whether he won the award or not, or remember the box office number. The same goes for Sol Gyung-gu even though he's obviously no longer at the height of his power. Film lovers and cinema studies scholars will always include him for his performance in Oasis and Peppermint Candy directed by Lee Chang Dong.
Kiara
March 23, 2016 at 9:16 PM
I think at some point they know that they've made it and they have nothing else to prove.
I love it that Ha Jung Woo is trying directing/writing. I hope he'll pursue it. He said in an interview that directing was harder than acting. Sounds like a great challenge for him.
(I don't usually search the net for news about my fav actors except for Ha Jung Woo. He is just that special lol).
Oh I didn't know about the “A Violent Prosecutor”controversy. Is it that bad? I love Hwang Jung Min to pieces. I even watched all his summer flicks and I think he is in it for the fun of it. He is way more talented for the kind of roles he has been playing lately so I kind of get the criticisms but it's his career and his choices so I don't know.

March 23, 2016 at 6:44 AM
Yeah I read about it too :D lol he's just joking. (Put the joke aside, and just my opinion, SFD is in another league compare to DOTS. Ratings be damned). Anyway, also in another interview with the writers today, they said through his acting, YAI is the actor who gave them direction on the topics they were troubled about. YAI said: "If there is any hindrance to the direction of the story, don't think about the weight of my parts, just cut them." (source: soompi forums)

I loved how they gave him his title tbh. Yes, there were previous episodes where it would have fit perfectly too, but him thinking back to his previous encounter with GSM & then sending him flying. Heck yes. SLAY!
I've already seen the final ep & this is definitely one of my favourite dramas of all time. Along with Signal which was also recent. The past few months have been absolutely amazing for me as a drama viewer. I thank the staff & production crew for giving us something so memorable and fun!

MOO-HYUL!!! FINALLY!!!!!!
I'm sorry that I actually lost faith that the writer would still give him his sixth dragon title as it feels awkward to force the title onto him now considering how late it is. BUT this writer really doesn't disappoint. I think his title came out at the right time, that is one hell of an ending!
I can't believe how SFD can maintain such good quality for 49 episodes (and all the way to the end).
This has truly been a treat.

I cried when Moo-Hyul and Boon-yi came back for Bang-won. Despite everything that's happened and whatever judgments they make on his character they ran back to him when the knew he was in trouble. It reminded me of earlier episodes when the relationship between these three were far less complicated.
And Boon-yi saying she'd marry Bang-won because he is a man with power is so devastating.

So. Six Flying Dragons ended and there's a huge gaping hole in my heart. I hate it when a drama is so good you feel sad to part with it. Argh.

I'm actually weepy that this drama has ended. What I really loved in this episode was the camera focusing on the poison cup. That light green cup was such a callback to the cup being balanced on Bang Ji's sword when he was trying to learn the Goksan method. And then...bingo..cut to Sa Gwang and Bang Ji outside. Sooooooooooooooooooo good! Writers-nim and Director-nim: PERFECTION! Even Nameless felt acceptable.
Thanks for recapping this drama for us.

Man, this episode has a lot of FEELS! Just a flashback to where they had a dinner party and all smile, it did break my heart. What happened since then? Why did they end up like this now? I thought about this while watching. Kudos to the writers, PD and actors! Especially Yoo Ah In and Yoon Kyun Sang, you both rock!

MOOOOOOOOOOHHHHYYYYUUUUUULLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! My baby! My love!!
Words fail me to express how I feel.
It's about damn time he got his title and I whooped like crazy when I finally saw his chyron, all my neighbors probably thought I was mad!
I have one major complaint:
This drama is too damned short, I want more! More!! More!!! More please. 50 episodes are too short for this amazeballs drama!

This episode is so bittersweet, I can't help but pity Bang won because everyone he loves is leaving him as a result of his own actions. At the same time what did he expect? I am so glad Boon yi didn't die in this episode. I was afraid she was going to get it.
And how glad I am that Bang ji never had the opportunity to fight Bang won. Thank goodness for CSG distracting him. I am also glad that Boon Yi's loyalty remains with Bang won and not her mother. In some ways this episode was sad, painful, bittersweet, exciting and such a relief! Only SFD can do this to me. Ottoke, what will I do now that this drama is ending?

Mannn where do I even begin...this episode really gets you in the feels...I really cant help but sympathize with LBW, yes i know, what did he expect after everything he has done?, but still in the end his prosperity changed joseon for the bettter. Annddd Moo Hyul ahhh the feels when he called his name and received his dragon title, the timing couldn't even be more perfect!! Despite getting his title late, he was always a dragon to me didnt matter...and the conversation between boon yi and bang won was heart breaking, the love they have for each other is sooo real and pure really wished they were together but they loved the people more!!
I cant believe it has already ended...this is probably my favorite sageuk of all time!! It was literally EVERYTHING!! kudos to everyone in this drama from onset to behind the scenes peeps... daebak!!
Cant imagine anyone else playing these great six dragons, they were all superb!! even the supporting cast!! sigh all good things must come to an end :/ thanks SFD!! loved it! :D

From some of the comments it sounded as if TWDR was produced as a 'sequel' to SFD but in fact it was produced well before, in 2011.
Some of the characters were there, played by different actors. My beloved Se-kyung who played So-yi in TWDR was Boon-yi here.
Overall I am very happy with the casting here. The male casts looked manly. I know it is hard to find macho looking Korean men but in some dramas they made them looked so gay, complete with bangs for hairstyles. Worse, some had the lost puppy look, in addition to looking gay (Seo Kang-Joon in "Hwajung: Splendid Politics").
The hair styling dept. definitely needs a radical shakeup!

agree! their hairstyle is cute but not for everyone please! it's too much!
btw, i hate the hair style for Moo hyul too. Not because its bad or else, but come ooooon, a warior need a clear view! non logic hairstyle! he can be killed becouse of his hair covering his eyes!

Moo Hyul got his dragon title finally; it feels like Batsman hits winning six on last ball in game of cricket; or a player Kicks winning goal in last minute in Football... I couldn't hold myself to cheer for Moo Hyul; everything will be forgotten but not Moo Hyul as he kicked winning goal even in last minute.
