Six Flying Dragons: Episode 46

It’s on now! Or to be more precise, it better be on next week, since this week was spent telling us just how on it’s going to be when we eventually get there. Time seems too short for placeholder episodes like this, though we can at least be grateful for the touching character moments interspersed within. The closer everyone gets though, the more foreboding it all starts to feel, effectively pitting our emotions against our better judgment when it comes to falling back in love with characters we may have temporarily dismissed. There’ll undoubtedly be some tough choices ahead—but for now, at least, we wait.

EPISODE 46 RECAP

Remembering Young-kyu’s advice that he should follow whatever decision Bang-won ends up making, Moo-hyul is able control his expression when Bang-won proposes the idea of killing both younger brother Bang-seok and Jung Do-jeon.

All he asks is how Bang-won plans on accomplishing that, when all private soldiers have been banned. With Bang-won under constant surveillance, it’ll be near impossible to gather the forces they’d need in secret, he adds, which is when a tear falls down Bang-won’s cheek.

As much as Young-kyu’s death pains him, his funeral will give them the opportunity they need. All his former comrades in battle and fellow soldiers will gather to see him off, and they’ll use them to create the army they’ll need to do the unthinkable.

Boon-yi ends up finding the not-so-secret weapons cache after following the bloodstains leading to it, and pays a visit to Young-kyu’s funeral (presumably after seeing what was inside).

Moo-hyul sits desolately in front of his friend’s memorial tablet, unable to keep from blaming himself for Young-kyu’s death—if he would’ve just taken the opportunity he had to kill Sa-kwang, none of this would’ve happened. Da-kyung also blames herself, since Young-kyu was acting on her behalf when he was killed.

During his meeting with the military officials who fought with and knew Young-kyu, Bang-won doesn’t stop them from thinking that Jung Do-jeon had a hand in his death, since that kind of thinking can only help his cause.

They’ll use the forty-nine day mourning period to their advantage, by holding secret meetings under the guise of gathering for the usual rituals performed in the interim. But they may not get to be as clandestine as they’re hoping, since Jung Do-jeon stops by the funeral, sees the scores of shoes outside the meeting room, and immediately knows who’s inside.

Seeing Bang-ji at the funeral, Moo-hyul can’t help but wonder if he’ll end up fighting him… and if he does, he’s worried he’ll lose.

No sooner does he mention Sa-kwang’s culpability in Young-kyu’s death to Bang-ji do we cut to her piling stones on top of the child Eun-ho’s grave. Ok Ajusshi, the former King Gongyang’s family member who’d gone into hiding with her, is revealed to have been discovered and killed, and it’s almost too much for her to bear. She considers ending her own life, but stays her hand in the end.

Boon-yi expresses her sincere condolences to Bang-won, but wastes no time in revealing that she’s seen the weapons storage shed in Banchon. Bang-won feels immediate guilt for pulling her into a situation he never wanted her in, remembering when he’d told her that all he wanted was for her to be happy.

Now, because of him, that outcome is looking less and less likely. Even so, he refuses to move the weapons he’s stored there, since he might need them in the future. She can turn him in if she wants, but he knows she won’t. The threat that Banchon wouldn’t be able to escape looking complicit with his crimes is heavily implied.

He even admits that should the day come where he has to use those weapons, it would be difficult for him not to just for her sake. Which basically means that though he cares for her, she’s on her own.

Jung Do-jeon acts sympathetic toward Bang-won in order to try and probe for information concerning the circumstances of his death, only to be interrupted when Yeon-hee arrives with news that the Hongwu Emperor has died. Similarly, Jukryong arrives to deliver the same news to Bang-won.

This happened a lot sooner than both parties were expecting, which means that Jung Do-jeon will have to act fast to get his troops to Liaodong. Bang-won’s counterproposal sends a shockwave through his supporters—he wants to kill Jung Do-jeon, Officer Nam, and Bang-seok’s father-in-law before the Liaodong expedition can even begin.

Ha Ryun brings up the logistical problems with this plan, the least of which being that they don’t have the private army to mount such a campaign. Even with the soldiers they’ve squirreled away, storming the palace just doesn’t seem feasible. Still, Bang-won reminds Ha Ryun of his job, telling him to strategize some way out of their predicament.

Upon hearing news of the Hongwu Emperor’s death, King Taejo calls all his sons to meet with him in the palace. He thanks sons Bang-gan and Bang-gwa for their help on the battlefield in the past, and Bang-won for resolving issues with Ming on their behalf.

Which is why he needs their help again… for the war in Liaodong. His sons aren’t the only ones opposed to the move—Jo Joon is also completely against Jung Do-jeon and the Liaodong Expedition.

Crown Prince Bang-seok congratulates his older brothers on enjoying their fathers’ trust, unaware that all of them are against the move. Bang-won seems most affected by his younger brother’s presence, since he can’t escape looking into the eyes of a boy he’s already decided to kill.

Ha Ryun has found a loophole that will allow Bang-won to bring at least five hundred soldiers into the capital without attracting undue notice, though what remains unknown is whether that date will come before the troops leave for Liaodong. Only if it comes before does Bang-won have a chance of stopping the war.

After picking a date for the conquest, Jung Do-jeon has the huevos rancheros to be offended when his brother suggests using Hidden Root members to drum up support for the war effort.

That’s not what he created a secret society for, Jung argues, practically with his hand over his heart. He created Hidden Root as a checks and balances system on the power of the sadaebu, and also to check the king’s power should he ever forget the tenant of minbon [the people are the root of the nation]. How dare his brother suggest using Hidden Root for anything but the ninety-nine other uses Jung Do-jeon already assigned to it? For shame!

Meanwhile, Boon-yi ends up doing exactly as Bang-won predicted she would, when she cautions Gab-boon against telling Jung Do-jeon about the weapons storage. Not only would it implicate the whole of Banchon, it’d put Grandma, Moo-hyul, and the two of them at risk. She has to do what’s best for her people, which is what Bang-won is counting on.

Against the judgment of his advisors, King Taejo is fully intent on leading the Liaodong expedition with his army, despite his poor health as of late. He knows Jo Joon is against the decision, but doesn’t want him to resign from his post because of it.

Healthy disagreement is good, and besides, he needs to leave someone behind who can take care of Bang-seok. The other princes will be going into battle with him—they just don’t know it yet.

But they all find out in short order when they receive the royal command to do so, along with the warning that they’re not to reveal the departure date to anyone. Right now, the troops are set to assemble in front of Sukjeongmun Gate on August 20th.

Now, all Bang-won can do is hope that Lee Sook-beon and his army can come before the 20th… but Moo-hyul’s arrival quickly puts a damper on that hope. The soonest they can get their army into the capital without arousing suspicion is the 26th.

Which gives them seven days to come up with an alternate plan, even though the risks will be much greater without an army to support them. Bang-won tells his cohorts this, then seeks an answer from Young-kyu, whose funeral rites they’re using as an excuse to meet in secret.

He has his answer when he goes home, telling Da-kyung that he’ll make his move on Jung Do-jeon tonight. They’ll have to get their weapons cache out of Banchon without being caught, and if Jukryong is right, then luck may be on their side.

He says this because King Taejo’s condition (he’s suffering from boils, it seems) has forced Jung Do-jeon to set the departure date back by seven days, which gives Team Bang-won enough time to get his army inside the capital. Should Bang-won fail, Nameless will abandon him and put a stop to the war by burning the army’s food supplies.

Though they only have one day between their army’s arrival and the departure of the national army for Liaodong, Bang-won plans to use it to the fullest. Their plan won’t succeed if they can’t kill Jung Do-jeon, Officer Nam, and Bang-seok’s father-in-law, so that’s their first priority.

But in order to accomplish that, they’ll need Bang-ji out of the way, which is where Moo-hyul comes in. Poor Moo-hyul seems to already know what Bang-won is going to ask of him, and it’s doubtful that anyone there caught the brief tear he shed. Aww.

Everyone is given a job to do before they’re to act on their big plan, and Bang-won gives them the same advice Ha Ryun once gave him about laying low in the meantime. Not like he ever followed that advice anyway.

Fast forward six days to the day before the army’s departure, which is also the day Team Bang-won plans to enact their master scheme. Boon-yi and Gab-boon know that this is the last day Bang-won has to act, so they can only try to be prepared. What will happen to Banchon because of his actions is something they can’t predict.

Sinister Minister Woo Hak-joo stalks the halls of Sungkyunkwan like he’s missed his calling to be in a horror movie, and the fact that we keep getting snippets of his presence should tell us that he’ll be important soon.

Jung Do-jeon receives well wishes for his upcoming crusade from his little nephew, JUNG KI-JOON, which might sound familiar—he’ll grow up to become the main villain (and arguably one of the greatest villains of all time) in Tree With Deep Roots.

Grandma pulls Bang-ji away from the table to give him a charm she bought for both him and Moo-hyul, in order to protect them from harm in the upcoming expedition.

Moo-hyul’s heart breaks a little when he sees how much Grandma cares for Bang-ji, and even knowing what’s to come doesn’t stop him from returning the small smile Bang-ji sends his way.

Of course, Jung Do-jeon picks today of all days to compliment Boon-yi on the way she’s been running Banchon thus far, which I’m sure isn’t helping the guilt she must feel over harboring weapons in secret.

Since they’re being candid, though, she decides to ask if the minbon idea is really true, which means revealing to Jung Do-jeon that she overheard him during his secret Hidden Root meeting.

He doesn’t seem too perturbed that she overheard, and takes to explaining the core belief behind minbon: “In the hearts of the sadaebu who practice politics, I meant that the people must be the sole root of the nation. But the day when the people become the root and core of this world… is likely still far away.”

As for why, he tells her that it’s because common people don’t have the time or freedom to make real contributions or change when they’re too busy being the manufacturing backbone of the country. “They are too busy to be awoken. Some may learn to read. For many others, it would be impossible.” (Hence the creation of Hangul that would come later.)

Moo-hyul and Master Hong work on smuggling the weapons out in straw packs, but apparently no one has learned their lesson from the last time someone chanced upon the weapons cache, since Grandma finds them in the not-so-secret shed.

Grandma is horrified by what she sees, leaving Moo-hyul no choice but to tell her that Bang-won plans to kill Jung Do-jeon tonight. Her first concern is that this means Moo-hyul will have to fight Bang-ji, a claim which he denies, since there’s a separate plan to get Bang-ji out of dodge before they aim for Jung.

In desperation, Grandma takes Moo-hyul by the hand and begs him not to be a part of it. He’s as gentle as possible as he tells her that he can’t quit now, since this is not only his job, but his responsibility. He owes as much to Bang-won, since their family wouldn’t be where they are without his help.

Since she can’t get him to quit now, Grandma begs for him to promise that he’ll quit after this work is done. He promises that he will, no matter what the outcome is with Bang-won’s plan—though he makes her promise, in turn, that she’ll take her grandchildren and run should Bang-won’s plan go awry.

She does, and also volunteers to help smuggle the weapons out in the process. No, Grandma, no! Stop giving the show excuses to kill you too!

Boon-yi seeks to protect her oppa by having him promise to stay the night at her place, though he can only come after the long day’s work is done. Meanwhile, everyone and their mother expresses curiosity at the ox-led cart Grandma and Master Hong are trying to unsuccessfully smuggle out of Banchon.

One of the passersby takes a sickle to the cargo when he suspects it of being more than just rice, which, despite being a thing no one would do, puts Grandma and Master Hong in a tough spot. Luckily, Moo-hyul knocks the man out and drags him off before he can sound the alarm.

Yeon-hee updates Jung Do-jeon and his supporters on the troop movements in Ming, specifically regarding Zhu Di’s arduous path to the capital. She meets Bang-ji outside, and admits that she’s frightened and worried for what’s to come.

But in a move reminiscent of when she happily sewed his festival garb for them when they were children, Yeon-hee gifts him with a suit of armor she’s made for him.

With tears in her eyes, she tells him that after the horrible trauma she endured after the festival, it’s been difficult for her to make clothes without conjuring up those memories. Even so, she got through it all to make this set of armor for him, in the hopes that it would keep him safe in the trying times ahead.

Having not been nearly as thoughtful (boys), Bang-ji gives her the protection necklace Grandma gave him. He argues that she needs the protection more than him, but stresses that she’s just borrowing it—she can return it to him when he comes back.

“When I return, then… will we be able to dream together?” he asks hesitantly. Then, with a tearful look from her, he steps in to wrap his arms around her. The contact shocks her at first, but she soon allows herself to return the embrace.

The curfew bell tolls ominously, which is Bang-won’s cue to get started. Before he goes, Da-kyung tells him that she won’t regret this night no matter what the outcome is. The hug they share is one of mutual support.

Jukryong’s operatives kill any Hwasadan spies lurking about, successfully clearing a path for Bang-won as they go. As his soldiers begin to coalesce, Boon-yi finds Grandma praying and asks about the man Moo-hyul knocked out earlier.

Grandma has to lie that he’s gone away in order to cover up the fact that he’s tied up and gagged nearby, but Boon-yi doesn’t seem to buy it.

Bang-won and his men are joined in the street by more and more soldiers, with each official bringing their own small armies together as one. It’s quite a sight to see the grim resignation on all their faces as they march toward their goal.

As Jung Do-jeon proclaims his daring war strategy to his own supporters, Yeon-hee seems to be walking a path that’ll inevitably coincide with Bang-won and Moo-hyul’s.

Whereas Bang-ji remains blissfully unaware as he admires the armor she gave him, his sister is not, and looks up as though she senses what’s coming.

COMMENTS

Where are you, Next Week? Hurry up and get over here! Then again, I am a little hesitant going forward, if only because of all the extra time the show’s been dedicated to previously sidelined characters. Because we all know by now that the only reason that starts to happen toward the end is to garner empathy toward those characters, which can then inevitably be used against us when/if/when they die.

In a way, having Tree With Deep Roots is like having a comfort blanket of sorts, since we can look to the characters featured in it and know the ones who should have a fighting chance at surviving. It’s a form of cheating that I’m unabashedly okay with using, because without it, I’d be biting my nails worried about every character whose fate wasn’t already guaranteed by history. But even then, I don’t think we can let our guards down so easily—they’ll already be expecting that. (*Dons tinfoil hat*)

As long as we’re being honest though, this week was a bit of a letdown in terms of forward momentum, since it’s not like they needed all this time to set the table for what’s to come. There were nice moments in both episodes, and arguably more in yesterday’s, but for the most part there was this inescapable feeling that we were just waiting. Likely because that’s all everyone on screen was doing, but still.

It was good to see Bang-won back in his element when it comes to strategizing, since he takes to dangerous schemes like a fish to water. The way he used Young-kyu’s death for his own means was eerily reminiscent of how Jung Do-jeon spun Jung Mong-joo’s death in his favor, though his direct reaction to the murder is still puzzling. Is it that he didn’t care to know who actually killed his lifelong companion because he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it? I guess you’d need an entire army ready to do your bidding in order to—… OH WAIT.

But fine, let’s take it on good faith that Bang-won had much bigger fish to fry, and that Bang-ji didn’t know Young-kyu well enough to go hunting the best swordswoman who ever existed down. Moo-hyul’s inaction we can chalk up to guilt, though he’s not as easy to read as he used to be lately. He certainly wasn’t lying when he made his initial promise to Grandma, but I can’t tell who he was lying to when he assured her that he and Bang-ji wouldn’t end up fighting each other. Either he genuinely believes that to be true, or he’s just hoping it will be. And if it’s the latter, no one would blame him.

I've caught the first episode of The Great King Sejong. And though none of the fighting scenes were fantastic as in this drama but it was still cool!

And you're right, Ha Ryun the Prime Minister is cheeky as hell and I'm digging the portrayal.

... Waiting for next week is killing me, so I'm just going to go ahead and enjoy The Great King Sejong first.

p.s. I have the scene with the eunuchs unintentionally hilarious.

I meant to say, I found the scenes with the screaming eunuchs unintentionally hilarious.

I would like to see less fighting scenes. Instead, one of the parties should be disposed off with some clever ambushes; like archers, hidden away, firing a volley of arrows, especially at the main target(s).

All these unnecessary fighting scenes when, especially in some cases, history had already told us of the outcome. Moreover, it is kind of boring to see more of the same when some intelligent stratagem would have been more entertaining.

I've waited for the First Strife of the Princes since E31 ... now I'm still waiting for it until next week. But it doesn't matter. It's so close and I can almost lick the bitter aftertaste of the aftermath.

What I've learnt from the last twenty episodes or so, that if there's a scene that involves SLOW MOTION + EPIC MUSIC = BAD things ALWAYS happen.

Is it not too late to start busting out talisman for everyone involved in next week's episode?

(Scurries to the nearest shaman/witch doctor I can find on such short notice, with tons of cash to spare on fictional characters' lives.)

SFD does the coolest slow motion scene ever! When everyone merge together slowly and march towards their goal, I had goosebumps!

At that point of time, I was chanting in my mind 'YEAH TEAM BANGWON, GO AND KILL THEM ALL'
Man, this show has made me evil.

Loved the closing scenes too, Bang Gan's rearing to use his mace!
Good choice of first pic by HeadsNo2, really sums up Bang Won in this ep, he looked like a caged beast waiting to pounce. Normal service resumed after being so out of character in the previous ep.

Bang Gan, his mace and that fur scarf on his armour actually made him look manlier than the rest of the troop soldiers. Though I chuckled because he's the only one who constantly has that fur armour side-piece.

I liked the fact that nearly all Bang Gan's non-official outfits are sort of animal-related, be it animal-print hanboks or fur coat/scarves on armours. It really highlighted him as the "muscles" kind of brother among the three older Yi boys.

But for some reason I think he gonna die in episode48.. They can't kill Kim Myungmin that early, he's one of the main lead..

They could, though. Because if we were to refer to history, he'll then proceed to kill his father etc. in order to take the throne. So yeah, Sambong might die in the next episode.

Yeah, I agree, I have been reading wikipedia because I just can not wait! Hehehe so history is the only spoiler
I don't think Bang Won killed his father, but then again wikipedia (or I read) wrong.
Anyway, if the drama intends to end with Bang Won taking over the throne, Sambong has to die within the next episode.

I was actually quite upset that it has taken this long for the writer to kill Sambong.

SPOILER
The second strife of princes has to happen as well before Bang Won took over the throne.

It took so long to kill Sambong because it's Kim Myungmin. They can't kill Kim Myungmin so early.

Bangwon didn't kill his father, he just kill his brothers, Sambong and also Lady Min's brothers.

Did he kill his older brothers too? Or just the lil ones?

0

lol one way to look at it. I think it is because they can't kill him easily because he is one of dragons. First dragon to die out of 6. What could be the order of dying- Sambong, Boonyi, Lee Sung-gye, Bang-won, Bang-ji, Mu-Hyul?

0

@crazyahjummafan

He killed both of his younger (half) brothers. He didn't kill Bang-gan after the 2nd strife. He sent him into exile.

0

No Bang-won never plan to kill his father although he should have taken out his anger on him.

Don't believe everything you read on line. You are better off reading Homura's site than wikipedia.

Look for sources with the translation of the Annals.

If you dig a little deeper into the actual history and his accomplishments you'll be amazed. He was the definition of Genius.

I think the writers did their best effort with this Sambong but most viewers did not give him a chance or see things from Sambong's point of view. A little less fangirling will open one's eyes.

SFD's Sam Bong's maybe not good-hearted, brilliant as in other dramas but he is still one of the best characters here, with all the twists and turns in personality and manner. His change after Po Eun's death is so well portrayed and it made the whole show interesting. He's not the same old-fashioned, passive, undetermined scholar who wanted to take it all without give up a little as we see him since his return from exile. If he had remained to be his old self, he wouldn't have stood a chance to be alive till ep. 46. We see the malicious nature of Bang Won slowly affected Sam Bong, from the time when he asked what Bang Won would do to the land papers to the time he trapped Bang Won with the fake Nameless letter. And I like that Sam Bong much more than the all-good ones in other dramas.

Kim Myung Min humanized him. What he said in the preview "I'm tired Bang-won -ah" makes me sad, just like when Poeun died and Choi Young's last scene in jail.

I know it's a drama but history will always come first in my mind.

0

That line makes me feel sad too, although it doesn't describe him as a passionate and loyal scholar to his country as in "I did my best, Po Eun." but it does have its own meaning, shows us the more human side of the well-respected nearly-godlike patriot. Leave alone that "Bang Won-ah", it's heartbreaking!
There's things I found intriguing concerned history. They said history was written by the winner, but Bang Won was the one who won so why was he possibly described as a tyrant and Po Eun - Sam Bong were the ones who received wordship? King Youngjo used to burn all the records about Crown Prince Sado's death, right? I know kings of Joseon couldn't easily change what was recorded in the annals but Lee Bang Won had real power when he became king, he killed a lots of people, so I think some "honest" historians couldn't possibly be a big matter.
At last, I wish ones who know history could relax a little bit to enjoy this near-perfect show. In some cases, we have to admit that history is not always truthful.

0

Oh gosh yes the history was definitely written by the winners. I have been saying that from the very beginning and I somehow appreciate the writers in someway.

They are not sticking with the old history books. They are mixing the Annals and the current historians' recent researches. It's fantastic to see it from both sides.

The annals version of what went down that night Sambong, Banseok, Nam Un, Minister Shin etc were killed is so dang bias. They were called evil etc and I'm thinking, what kind of historiographer would make that kind of bias conclusion? Unless someone is trying justify killing innocent people. The historiographers were forbidden from writing their own opinions as part of the history.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to SFD's own version of the 2 strifes.

0

Jeong Do Jeon "I did my best Poeun" hit me like a ton of bricks. They were a lot tighter in that version although it wasn't quite true that he found him dead on the bridge but you know I cried like a little baby because Jo Jae-hyun is such a fine actor. Then, they showed the charismatic Yoo Dong-geun agonizing over Poeun's death so I completely lost it.

Yea those were some powerful words and each fit their own version of Sambong.

0

Sambong was a great scholar and a genius indeed, but not a good politician. You call LBW Kill-Bangwon, but Sambong persecuted Poeun's followers and killed many who are against him. He and LSG massacred all Wangs(Goryeo's royal name) which is vaguely hinted in SFD. Actually it was LBW who gave Wangs chanced to live in Taejong era. And Dumoondong incident was not actually done by LBW. LBW-Taejong was indeed iron-hearted king, but Koreans don't think he was a tyrant cause he was a good king to common people.
He Killed Sambong, but he spared his son's life. He killed Poeun but Poeun's followers such as kwon-guen, Hwang-Hee etc. became BW's loyal subjects which means Taejong was not just a tyrant.
Both Sambong and LBW were great in their own way. BW said to Sambong. in SFD "I wanted to protect the beautiful you made." and he actually did except that there's no Sambong in that country.

0

I think the writers doesn't do LBW justice, either. But Yoo Ah-in's LBW is SOOOOOO attractive, so that's ok with me. keke.

0

I was talking to Jan about the historical Sambong. I'm not sure if you are talking about the history or the drama or what.

According to the Annals , Sambong had 4 sons. Two were killed trying to save their father and the other committed suicide. I'm not sure which son you are talking about.

Why wasn't he a good politician may I ask?

Yes they did try to get rid of the Wangs and their supporters. Not everyone supported the new country and their chance of rallying behind the Wangs was pretty high.

Yes he wanted to protect the beautiful world Sambong created after killing him.

No one was innocent when it comes to shedding blood. They all did. Lee Seong-gye overthrew Goryeo by shedding blood. Bang-won sat on the throne after shedding blood.

0

The Wangs had their fair share of shedding blood to established Goryeo.

0

LBW spared Jung-Jin's life(Sambong's first son), he killed two other sons because they tried to save their father. He didn't get rid of all the Jung's family just because Jung was his enemy. Nam-Eun's elder brother Nam-Jae was on LBW's side.

When I said Jung was not a good 'politician', it was not about his political ideas.

0

I don't even remember what happen to one of the 4 sons of Sambong so you must be right.

I thought Nam Jae was neutral? He was not in the capital either during the first strife of the princes.

0

Bang-won was not going to kill his father and he never did. His father was ill and still mourning Queen Shindeok's death. The plan was to kill Sambong, Bangseok and his suppoerters.

I actually replayed the scene where Bang Won and Da-kyung hug because theirs is such an interesting and intriguing relationship. I think Heads describes it aptly with "mutual support" and I've come to really like all their scenes together and the respect they have for each other.

I will be watching Tree after all this is over in attempt to alleviate my withdrawal symptoms, which i suspect will be SEVERE. ;_____;

When i first started this show i was all about Bang Ji (and of course Bang Won) but along the way i fell in love with everyone else.

Tree is great I had to re-watch it just so that I could realign the characters in my head. But when you watch Tree you surely will not like LBW as the King at his most murderous and well ,older Bang-Ji is even more bad-ass but nowhere near as good looking as the younger version :-)

Bang Won-Lady Min's skinship display only took like 31 episodes for it to manifest before our very eyes, since their wedding night.

We've waited loong enough.

My ships in this show (Boon Yi + Survival, Moo Hyul + Happiness/Cheok Sa Kwang) have being blown apart even before they had the chance to sail into the sunset (or even leave the port) ... So I might as well root for the couple that I know will SURVIVE this bloody mess ...

I didn't watch Tree with deep roots but I guess both Bang-ji and Moo-hyul will survive (Please tell me they will because tears-sniff-are-sniff-coming) but Yeon-hee will die and then what would Bang-ji do?! UGH, I don't wanna think about it, I'll just wait for next week to find out!

I'm not worried about anything else, Bang-won can kill Jung Do-jeon and kill Bang-seok and kill everyone else but I want my boys to be safe till the end!

Thanks heads for the recap, now let's wait for Monday!

Because Lady Min is a political ally. It's completely consistent for Bang Won to be more reliant on her than on Boon Yi, whose connection to him is more personal than political (and has been for a while).

It's like when a team has a huddle before they start a game, or you high-five your coworker before a presentation. Well, except that in this case failure would result in an incredibly painful death for you and everyone you know. A hug is totally natural.

This show has been simply amazing to watch week to week. I have friends who will begin once it is over, so I have even thought of watching it again as they are watching, but will likely watch TWDR again instead, or first.

One thing I want to say is THANK YOU for the recaps, HeadsNo2, and THANK YOU to everyone who has commented here throughout the time. I know we have a few weeks and I am prematurely sentimental, but I knew so little about Korean history until just a few years ago and it is thanks to pointers and people taking the time with extensive commentaries that I feel so enriched now and excited to know more. I also found another wonderful blog for the history, which made this experience so much more fascinating!

For us, lady min & BW relationship seems so sudden.
But the reason why it didn't happen before, is because lady min feel BW need to earns his worth first. But he already won her trust after that explosive threats he made to her elders clan.
And I think BW already give up on BY the day after the snow scene.
But the writer choose to hide that fact for romantic reason.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually I don't think it's a sudden that they become closer. You must understand that many many years have passed since they got married. Their relationship has always been political ally, he may not love her as much as he used to love Boon Yi (or still is) BUT he always appreciates her presence in his life. As a wife, she has always been supportive of his ideals and ambition and she sticks by him.

And honestly, Bang-won has never been one who gets emotional over love. He is one that definitely won't be able to let go of his dream and ambition just because of Boon Yi.

I don't see a problem of him hugging his wife at this junction of his life. After all, if the plan of killing JDJ doesn't work well, he and his wife (and the whole clan) will die. It's a situation where they either win and get the throne together or die together. It's kind of a special bond.

Boon Yi is Bang Won's first love, not true love. He chose power over her, as she chose her people over him. They're both perfectly aware of their ambitions and responsibility for those who follow them. Boon Yi reminds him of the innocent self that he once was and he treasures that. But that's all. Men have to grow up.
On the other hand, Lady Min deserves Bang Won's consolation as a hug. She's been with him through good and bad. If it hadn't been her, Bang Won wouldn't have had any support from his powerful, prosperous in-law and the weapons and the determination to go forward. I think he should give her a tight hug when she got so worried that she wanted BY to be his mistress to assure BY's support to him. Not every woman/ wife can do that.

0

because Boonyi and Bangwon are a completely fictional couple, Boonyi is fictional. Min is Bangwon's wife, future queen and mother of Sejong the Great, she deserves the screen time

That's why I think the writers didn't develop lady min & Bang Won relationship really well. Because lady min is not one of the dragon.
Come to think about it, if we objectively compare BY & lady min part in changing "history" in SFD world, I think lady min is the most highly candidate as the dragon.
Don't get me wrong, I loveee BY & BW love story. But seeing BY's parts getting shorter, make me question that.
I don't know,,maybe the writer has another agenda for BY in latter episodes.

More of the love triangle (Ban Won-Da Kyung-Boon Yi) would have been entertaining rather than some of the stupid, unnecessary scenes).

I would love to see a sequel with the same principal characters and player by the same actors. The sequel of sorts, like TWDR and Great King Sejong, both earlier productions, while quenching some of the thirst after SFD is hardly enough.

Alas. Korean dramas do not have multiple seasons like in Western TVs and it is about time they change this.

Required fields are marked *

Only...4 more episodes to go? I don't know whether I should be crying or celebrating at this point. Celebrating not because I can't wait to finish this drama. Far from it. Like Heads said, I've found SFD as a comfort food that I can always count on Monday and Tuesday. However, it's my first time ever finishing a 50 episoder!!

Anyway, onto the speculation. So...as far as we can gather from TWDR (spoilers!!!!!!)

Bang Ji will still live, YH will die (I have to say...good riddance. I'm sad for Bang Ji, but can't stand YH). Sambong goes and meets his Creator. Bang Ji and our not so cutie anymore WH will fight. Fighting, begin!

What'll happen to Boon Yi? She'll live, right?

Required fields are marked *

I feel like Boon-yi can't survive the show, she's no where to be seen in Bancheon and I feel like she would have been mentioned somewhere if she'd still be alive in TWDR, but it would make sense she wasn't mentioned if she'd passed as it could just open up old wounds. Grandma might live, since she's elderly it would make sense that even if she survives SFD she might not make it to TWDR because of old age.

Someone will take responsibility for the weapons being found in Banchon. Right now grandma and Bong Yi are both guilty of not reporting it.

The writers didn't have a sequel in mind when they wrote Tree. That's why Bong Yi, Sa Gwang and some of the new characters here were not mentioned in Tree.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think BY and Grandma are both going to die.

It has been mentioned multiple times already in the comments section, people have been speculating that BY will die because she is nowhere to be found in TWDR.
Bodashiri referred to this scene in TWDR where the leader of Banchon mentioned that two slaves had to take the fall in order for Banchon to survive. I have been wondering who the second slave could be if BY is the first slave... but Grandma would make sense if they discover she helped smuggling the weapons. Which may also explain why MH stayed with BW after everything is over instead of honoring his promise with Grandma.

Also a random thought: but I thought that MH had like A LOT of siblings in the early episodes. I have always wondered where they disappeared to in the later episodes.

0

@ Jenny, they suffered from the same problem with Bang Won and Lady Min's kids, Moo Hyul's siblings are no longer vital to the plot. So, we don't see them on screen anymore.

There are two possibilities, either they remained employed by Bang Won's family, taking care of Lee Do and his siblings, etc. Or they simply followed Grandma to work in her tavern.

0

But it won't make any sense at all if boon yi will get a punishment for hiding the weapons since BW will take over the palace. Why does he want to punish BY and gradma for that? I guess BY will die for some unpredictable cause like Young Kyu's. Maybe because she wanted to protect BJ or YH or Sambong?or maybe she just happened to be there..

0

@magnolia

Very good point. I don't know what is going to happen but the rules in Banchon was very strict.
I don't know if Bong Yi can live with that. How can she punish her own people while she breaks the rules herself. I just don't see her as a hypocrite.

Bang-won didn't become king until 2yrs later but he did wield the real power behind Bang-gwa.

0

@Kiara The world is full of hypocrites. One law for us and one for them, regardless of which class of society they are in. Members of the ruling class, especially their families, were often spared while their sidekicks were put to death.

0

The scenes of Bang-ji and Yeon-hee are supposed to redeem Yeon-hee after all the irksome things she has said and done in the past few episodes, but I'd say it's too little too late to finally develop their relationship now. The writers have been too caught up with the rest of the characters and failed to make any progress with Bang-ji and Yeon-hee. I think they have failed a little in this aspect. Such a pity because Yeon-hee's death could have been more impactful in the story.

0

Required fields are marked *

YeonHee's death will still have impact for me because it is obvious that Bangji still loves her. What isn't obvious to me is that Yeonhee loves him back. I think it is telling that JDJ is the one suggesting she marry Bangji instead of her expressing the desire to marry.

Just when I thought I really wanted to see Sam Bong and Yeon Hee die, they gave us these scenes!! Why would you play Junsu's song again after so long, show? WHY?! Byun Yo Han and Jung Yoomi are seriously oozing with chemistry. Made me forget how annoyed I was of Yeon Hee a few episodes ago.

I know that Moohyul will survive this but I can't help but worry for my baby. His promise to grandma was intriguing. Maybe he will really quit after this and live a quiet life away from Bangwon. Then Bangwon will recruit him again to protect his son. Okay, let me write a fanfic.

Thanks for the recaps, Heads!

Why were you rooting for him? He was an ass hole whose failure to do his job led to the death of one of BW's closest sidekicks.

He should have killed Sa-gwang when he had the chance but failed to do so as he had the hots for her. That feeling was not reciprocated; she was King Gongyang's women and will die as his woman.

I hate men like this. They will not accomplish anything great because they have a soft spot for pussies and cannot control their emotions. These women did not even like them but they hang on with the forlorn hope while neglecting their duties.

I wonder why Bang Won didn't ask Moo Hyul further about the culprit who killed Young Gyu and didn't worry about their secret weapon caches had been exposed. I think you're right: everyone who has ever entered that shed is probably going to be killed in nasty ways. Except Moo-hyul--he probably earns his chyron just for not dying to the Curse of the Storage Room of Doom.

That track is called Ddangsae's Avenge and it is on Part 2 of the OST. It is awesome!

Although, rewatching the scene, the full version of that particular vocal section isn't in my version of Ddangsae's Avenge, so maybe they will release a new track? I hope so.

Update- I have checked every OST released so far and haven't found that exact vocal segment yet. But the incredible vocals are by Korean traditional singer. 이 봉 근 (Lee Bong Geun) and you can find videos of his performances on YouTube, and he is also the vocalist on Ddangsae's Avenge.

Is there anyone here watching the Jang Yeong Sil drama by Song Il Guk?

?? I am watching. The show has been boring without much conflict. I even fell asleep watching. The reason I keep watching the boring show is that I always hope the show shows some surprises (which does not happen often - Look at GaekJu, sigh- but still)

I was so out of there after the 3rd episode. It's written by two noobies and that explains why it's so dumb and boring which is pretty sad because the show it's about a genius scientist.

Great King Sejong was better except that chose strange looking actor to play Yeong-sil.

I'm so excited for next week, mainly because this week's episodes have been relatively slower. Finally we're going to get some action, although the outcome of this blood bath also scares me for the characters I care the most, Bang Ji and Moo Hyul. Please don't destroy the bromance!

Anyway I'd like to appreciate Han Ye Ri since it doesn't look like Chuk Sa Kwang would be here much longer. HYR is one of my favourite actresses, if only for her voice. It is so distinct and pleasant to hear, a real actor's voice. I first saw her in the short KBS drama special Yeon Woo's Rain (watch this if you can) and I was so impressed with her quiet but impactful performance there that I was like "Who is this?" and I've been a fan since. When she first appeared in SFD and there's a lot of dismissal on her character for being a useless addition I was still confident that she's going to make an impact. I thought, they won't cast Han Ye Ri for nothing and waste that talent.

I love Han Ye-ri. I thought she was just doing a cameo in the beginning so I didn't pay much attention to her plus that erupt romance was kind of out of nowhere and it didn't feel real until later.

I'm really nervous about her and Moo-hyul. He knows that she killed Young-Gyu but he doesn't know what really happened and that she was protecting a child.

I'm sure the fight sequences will not fail us.

I wonder if this is the first time her lisp was brought up? I didn't notice it in Rooftop Prince but I was surprised to hear it in Maids. It bothered me then. I guess I got used to it after that hehe.

Next week JDJ, crown prince and YH will all die. BY will probably die too. I feel like BJ is meant to be a tragic hero. BJ has never explicitly chosen a side. He never cared for politics and just wanted to go back home. It's kinda sad that he probably could have saved YH and BY if only he made a stance on what he really wanted early on. I feel his hesitation will get him in the end and just leave him alone and angry.

It is possible for Bong Yi to take responsibility for the mess that went down in Banchon. I have a feeling that Banchon will be destroyed or will be moved to the capital.

Isn't it already in the capital? They re-built it when the capital was moved to Hanyang? That's why they could hide the weapons.

I'm sure Sak Gwang is still alive, and finally she will face Moo Hyul or Bangji again. Maybe next week. I love Yoo Ah In's intense look while he is hugging his wife. And I love love the last scene of this episode when "Team Bangwon" were marching together towards their goal in slow motion. while Yeonhee and Bangji smiling. I was shivered. Thank you for the recap, HeadsNo2.

He was part of it. Maybe they'll show him in a full episode next week. He became the 2nd king after Taejo (Lee Seong-gye abdicated the throne after the first strife.

Bang-gan is getting more screen time since he is going to die soon too during the 2nd strife.

...It is my personal theory that if Moo-hyul looks so good, it's because he had personal grooming classes from Judy but decided fur wasn't his style.

I mean, there were srs bsns stuff this episode, but all I could keep asking myself was: 'Is it just me or did Moo-hyul's clothing change from that striking teal to an equally awesome green? Does Moo-hyul have a super-secret wardrobe of clothing or something? Or is it just the lighting?'

I know the politics are supposed to matter, but politics schmolitics! Look at that man's colour palette!

I finally catch up to SFD...
I know historically speaking that JDJ dies during first strife of prince happening next week but..... my heart already so heavy thinking about it~
LBJ will be sad too since I'm sure YH will die...
Next week will require a lot of tissues~
And Moohyul need to get his dragon. I wonder whether clashing with LBJ or CSG will earn him that?

I hope MH won't get the title from killing CSG! I'd rather him have the dragon title after LBW rises to the throne.

Adieu Jung Do-jeon, you'll be missed.

I'm glad SFD will end with Bang-won's coronation as a king, but are 3 episodes enough to cover 2nd Strife of Princes? I hope the writers do not rush it. SFD has been so great so far.

0

Required fields are marked *

They will rush it, like most Korean dramas. There is a two year span between Bang-gwa's and Bang-won's ascensions to the throne.
We still have to deal with Ban-won's killing of half-brothers,Tajeo's abdication, Bang-gwa's ascension, 2nd strife of princes and Ban-won's coronation. Quite a lot to cover in the remaining 4 episodes.

I am glad of JDJ's demise. He was a hypocritical communist and delusional with his grand plans. Conquest of Liaodong was clearly not in Joseon's best interests. A small country with much larger neighbours should be like Switzerland, instead of conquests and trying to lord over others.

If only one of them akwnloadeged Bang-won and guided him instead of tossing aside like a trash after he helped them. One of them would've lived, imo.

I found an another opinion in Homura's note:
"Jung Do-Jeon said he wanted to leave records rather than his name. So was it. His new country, his political system, his law, his writing, all of his great achievements remained as he had designed, but the great revolutionist’s name had been a taboo for over 500 years."

All of their dreams including Sambong was what they were known for in the history books. The writers turned it into their own personal dreams.

Sambong was known as a traitor that's why he was forgotten until now.

JDJ's greed was his failing. He did not want to share power but preferred a puppet king and that was why he did not lobby for BW to become Crown Prince even though he was the most qualified. Reap what you sow and he deserved his ending.
