Ryu Joon-yeol, Yoo Hae-jin to join Song Kang-ho’s period film Taxi Driver
by girlfriday
I’m so happy that Ryu Joon-yeol (Answer Me 1988) is racking up the movie roles, and this one’s sure to be heartbreaking, not to mention a huge step up career-wise for him, to be acting alongside film veterans Song Kang-ho (Sado) and Yoo Hae-jin (Veteran). Song Kang-ho is the only one confirmed for the project so far, and the others are considering favorably. The new film Taxi Driver takes place in Gwangju in 1980, and though the descriptions don’t say so explicitly, that tells me it’ll be set during the Gwangju Massacre or related events.
The film is the latest project from director Jang Hoon, of The Front Line and Secret Reunion (which also starred Song Kang-ho), and tells the story of a taxi driver who happens by chance to drive into Gwangju one day in 1980. Song Kang-ho will play the taxi driver, Yoo Hae-jin is up for an unspecified role, and Ryu Joon-yeol has been offered the part of a college student.
All we’re told is that the taxi driver and college student will be at at the center of the story. Given the setting and the time period, I’d wager that Ryu Joon-yeol plays a student protester, which puts him in grave danger during a time when student protesters were beaten and killed for opposing a dictatorial government. Of course, it may just be a random story about a taxi driver, but then why would you set it in 1980 Gwangju?
I guess Ryu Joon-yeol is just destined to break my heart over and over. I’m crossing my fingers for everyone in this cast to sign on, because it would be a dream lineup. Taxi Driver plans to film this year and doesn’t have a release date yet.

I will never pass on a movie with Song Kang Ho's name attached to it. Yoo Hae-jin is one of the best supporting actors in Chungmuro.
Happy for Ryu and for any younger actors that have the opportunity to act alongside the best and well established veterans of the film industries.

He's definitely choosing his projects well - starring with Song Kang ho! I'm definitely going to watch as gut wrenching as the movie sounds. So happy for RJY!

So happy for him and such a big chance to play along such amazing veterans,if what they hint is right(and most likely might be)this movie will be indeed powerful...i have this feel that Ryu Joon Yeol will make his name in movieland(that is not that shallow in terms of looks) and stay there something i hope i'm wrong because i really want to see him in another good drama but who knows how many chances will he get(besides maybe tvN again)to pick him up for a lead role knowing how they all about pretty faces

SKH and RJY ?? I really loved Secret Reunion, aside from the fact that KDW was there ? I'm already thinking this will be a sleek movie.

really happy for him. while i'd normally avoid anything that sounds even mildly violent, i'll watch this for him. i've grown to love him even more after watching youths in africa. not only was he so great in reply 1988 (i just rewatched the episode where he struggles to keep a straight face while his dad and deok-sun crack puns over dinner, and totally melted), but he seems like a genuinely decent and hardworking guy. so confident and poised too, and not an ounce of affectation to mar any of it. just very natural.
i just hope he picks up a drama soon! films are all very well but they're harder to keep up with...

Don't you think Ryu Joon-yeol can be father and son or hyung and dongsaeng with Yoo Hae-jin? It took me reading this post to realize that, for a long time I had this thought I think I have seen Joon-yeol somewhere (in K drama lands! Of course)

After years of struggling as an actor, RJY deserves the success that is coming to him (and working w/ 2 great actors).
Interesting to learn to RJY, Go Kyung-pyo, Ahn Jae-hong and Lee Dong-hwi were already good friends when they were cast for AM1988 (too bad that LDH didn't get to go to Africa w/ his buds - would have also brought additional humor).
GKP was also good friends w/ Ryu Hye-young - must have been kinda weird doing kissing scenes w/ a good friend.
