Running Man: Episode 289

Get ready for an adventure of epic proportions. Our cast flies out to Dubai with a couple of friends and will meet all sorts of challenges and create unforgettable memories. What starts off as a relaxing trip will have an edge of competitiveness as they jump from great heights, try the local treats, and eat the golden sand, all to make sure they have a roof over their heads that night. Will they be able to make it through the day or burn under the sun?

EPISODE 289. Broadcast on March 6, 2016.

Our cast gathers at Incheon Airport for what looks like an epic adventure in Dubai. Everyone is (rightfully) suspicious about going abroad on a so-called vaycay this show, but at least they aren’t alone. Aw it’s Jung Il-woo and Lee Da-hae.

Da-hae gets found out right away, and oh man, I can’t wait to see Il-woo fall in the sand. It just so happens that Da-hae and Il-woo go way back—he came by her agency’s building as an aspiring actor, and she treated him to a meal that day thirteen years ago.

On their way to catching their flight, Ji-hyo shares that she read that buying gold is very accessible; one can buy gold on the streets of Dubai. Everyone has their own copy of a travel guide, and both Il-woo and Da-hae have enough variety experience under their belts to question whether they need to memorize the guide or not.

10 hours later, the cast lands in Dubai. Aw, the fans are chanting Asia Prince Kwang-soo’s name. It’s just past six here, and the cast gets excited at seeing the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, firsthand (“Mission Impossible!”).

They get even more excited when they learn that this famous building is their destination. The elevator only has two buttons, and one minute later, they arrive at the observation deck on the 124th floor. The view is simply breathtaking.

The cast is struck with disbelief when they’re told that they have the day off today. The production crew has gone ahead to recommend five activities to do, and the PD stresses that these missions are optional. Flabbergasted, Kwang-soo asks, “Who did you think would go sky diving in this group?”

Again, the PD tells them that they can do whatever they like, but they’ll receive a grasshopper stamp as a reward if they complete a mission. Why a grasshopper, you say? Because the word Dubai means “grasshopper” in Arabic. Aww, it’s like Jae-suk coming home.

Ah, here’s the incentive: getting 10 grasshopper stamps by 3 PM will earn them a luxury resort stay… for five people. The remaining four will pitch a tent in the desert. Let the competitive games begin.

Haha, Kwang-soo, Suk-jin, and Jae-suk all prepare themselves for their inevitable fate tonight. Jae-suk is given a glimpse into each extreme, and all he can see in the desert is sand.

Jong-kook and Il-woo are dead-set on going skydiving, and Jae-suk says they can do that and then disappear for the rest of the episode. The group plans out their individual itineraries over breakfast, where Da-hae asks if more than two people can go skydiving.

Everyone heads out at 8 AM, and Jong-kook shares how he once gave up the chance to go skydiving in his 20s, thinking that he’d have plenty of opportunities later on. Da-hae is already having second thoughts, and gets nervous again when the guys mention that they all have to sign a waiver.

Da-hae says she hasn’t even gone bungee jumping before, and Il-woo wonders if she’ll end up fainting during the experience. Her jaw drops when she’s told that she’ll be dropping out of an airplane, thinking that she’d only be falling from several hundred feet at most.

While we wait on her decision, we catch up with Haha and Kwang-soo. Haha says it’s super cold in the desert at night, and plus—the desert is made for people like Jae-suk and Gary, not them. Lol.

In a different car, Suk-jin asks if Jae-suk knows enough English to get around. Suk-jin goes first and his attempt to say “What time does the shuttle bus to the Dubai Mall depart?” turns into: “Dubai Mall shuttle bus, what time?”

For Suk-jin, it’s all about confidence as he strikes up a conversation with their driver in his broken English. Jae-suk then puts his language skills in perspective, citing how it’s like only using vocabulary to speak to someone.

They arrive at Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a marketplace located in the heart of Dubai. Jae-suk jokingly pulls rank as the celebrity sunbae, though Suk-jin points out that when they were both doing Entertainment Weekly together, it was Jae-suk who got fired first. Laughing, Jae-suk returns, “You were fired three weeks later!”

The mat hyungs marvel at the upscale structure, then double back when they see a vending machine that dispenses gold.

Ji-hyo is fast asleep while Gary talks, but he wakes her up to look at the ocean. Their destination is Jumeirah Beach, and they enjoy themselves taking pictures and looking out at the clear water. “The ocean looks like you!” he exclaims.

Haha and Kwang-soo are at JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence), trying their best not to look like tourists. Hahah, Kwang-soo blushes at the sight of bikini-clad women nearby. Haha meets an avid fan who also knows a bit of Korean, and they’re so excited about everything here that they nearly forget about the available mission.

Embarrassed by the flag nearby, Haha mutters, “Tell them to take those away.” The guys even tells the filming crew to pretend not to acknowledge them lest the locals judge them. But at least the sunny weather makes everyone happy here!

They have a choice between one of two games here, so Haha chooses the easier one. It’ll be a game of charades worth one stamp where they’ll need the help of a foreigner and correctly answer at least seven questions within 90 seconds.

Kwang-soo recruits an Italian man, and he’s stumped by the first question: a sloth. He moves onto the next question, then tries acting out a hamster. “I like ham!” Haha plays interference, and eventually Kwang-soo gets to the word “squid.”

“Kang Gary!” he cries. Wow, he’s so not gonna get that. The man answers, “Kangaroo!” Haha keeps feeding the man answers until he finally shouts in Korean: “Short arm octopus!”

Meanwhile, Jae-suk and Suk-jin get on a boat, and when Suk-jin asks how fast this thing will go, Jae-suk teases him for his lack of overseas MC-ing skills. Jae-suk marvels at a family who all have blond hair, to which Suk-jin retorts that that’s how genetics works.

Suk-jin doesn’t believe that the clear, emerald water is seawater, so Jae-suk tells him to have some and see. They play rock-paper-scissors to see who’ll drink the water, and Suk-jin loses. He has a taste and deduces, “It’s salty!”

As the boat ride progresses, neither of them can figure out what the mission is and now they’ve come full circle. Oh man, were they supposed to be paying attention to something?

HA—they were supposed to count how many bridges they traveled under. Suk-jin takes a shot in the dark and Jae-suk whispers, “How many?” Seven, Jae-suk. Seven.

Back to our skydiving trio, and Da-hae gets sensitive when her weight is accidentally captured onscreen. Oh honey, I was worried that you’d be too light to go skydiving. All of them go through safety training, and the crew tells them that they’re on their own once they head out those doors.

Completing this activity will earn them ten stamps, which means a guaranteed stay at the resort. Oh by the way, they’ll be jumping from 13,000 ft.

The crew gives them a final opportunity to back out… but none of them do. Meanwhile, Gary is busy playing a relay race with two foreigners. He thinks he’s filling sand in a bucket, but unbeknownst to him, hardly any of it ends up in the bucket.

Still, he keeps going and he successfully picks up two stamps. Ji-hyo’s mission is to squeeze water out of a wet towel and completes that for one stamp. Suk-jin is looking to go shopping, so Jae-suk suggests that he can buy something cheap with his 200 UAE dirham: “Gasoline.”

They arrive at the zipline mission, which honestly sounds really fun. They arrive at the roof and gape at the height. But it honestly looks like so much fun!!

The Monday Couple head for the marketplace where they eat ice cream and marvel at the Turkish delights. Ji-hyo snorts when Gary calls her his “girlfriend”, and after he buys some, she decides to take care of their finances.

They observe a vendor creating images in a bottle using sand, and this is where their mission is: put a puzzle together before the seller finishes a product. Gary has trouble with the sliding puzzle, so Ji-hyo strikes up conversation with the seller in order to buy some more time.

Somehow Gary completes it, to his utter surprise. Looking at the desert on the bottle of sand, he remarks that it reminds him of where he’ll be sleeping tonight.

It’s now noon, and Jae-suk and Suk-jin are told that the zipline is a 40-second trip. They decide to sign the waiver, though Jae-suk asks for a different-colored pen than red (which is usually reserved to write the names of the deceased). Already this seems ominous.

Jae-suk is given a GoPro camera to take with him on the ride, and he stows away his glasses. When he’s strapped in, the maknae PD instructs him that he’ll need to memorize three words on his trip down.

Jae-suk is released, and the straps fly up to his face while he zips down. He apologizes for all of his wrongs on his way down, but at least he gets all three words right and picks up three stamps. As for Suk-jin? We’re told that he backs out.

A little later, Kwang-soo gets strapped in and refuses to listen to the words he needs to memorize. The Giraffe goes flying, and I bet one can hear his screams from a mile away. He loses his hat somewhere during the ride, and doesn’t get a single word right.

With thirty minutes left, Ji-hyo and Gary lead with seven stamps each. Time to check back in with our skydiving trio who get on the plane to take them to an altitude of 13,000 ft.

Once they reach their altitude, Jong-kook is up first. The instructor jumps, and we’ve got a flying Tiger in the sky, people! Wow, that aerial view is amazing.

It’s time for Il-woo (and his instructor) to jump, giving us some incredible shots. Last but not least is Da-hae, and the woman who’s never jumped before now spreads her arms to enjoy the ride.

Jong-kook and his instructor make a smooth landing, followed by Il-woo and Da-hae. She’s on cloud nine and exclaims she wants to do it again. Once time is up, it really looks like Haha, Kwang-soo, Suk-jin, and Jae-suk will be sleeping in the desert tonight.

But for now, everyone heads out to the desert where the drivers let out some air from the tires. It’s time to travel through some sand dunes, and when Suk-jin marvels at the antelope, Jong-kook says they’re related to the impala.

Now the real adventure begins as the drivers drive up and down the sand dunes. Jae-suk says he has nothing to hold onto because someone else broke the handle already. They stop in the middle of the desert before the sun sets, and Jae-suk asks if Suk-jin should start pitching his tent since he’s in last place.

They’ll be playing a final game that consists of three rounds. Each round is worth three stamps, so the four who are currently faced to spend the night in the desert still have a shot.

Since they’re battling the setting sun, the PD quickly explains the rules: open up the box and run in those shoes to grab the flag. Everyone runs when the whistle blows, and Gary ends up with slippers whereas Haha gets toe socks.

I suppose that’s better than Jae-suk in heels and Kwang-soo in straw sandals. Or not, because Jae-suk slips right into them and runs to grab the flag. The Easy Brothers are now out of the running to stay in a hotel with their three stamps.

In the second round, Gary ends up with the slippers again, Ji-hyo in the heels, Haha has sandals, and Jae-suk has the toe socks. The Monday Couple runs out first and… Gary grabs the flag. Now that’s betrayal.

Of course he feels bad about it two seconds too late, and Ji-hyo says he kicked up sand in her face. In the picture-in-picture, we learn that Ji-hyo secured the last spot in the hotel (though she said earlier she would’ve been fine with sleeping in the desert).

Looking at the four stuck in the desert, why people might think that they planned this outcome from the start. Suk-jin remembers that the four of them went on the roller coaster in Taiwan together, too.

Everyone feels bad leaving the four behind, and Il-woo gives them a chocolate bar that they immediately fight over. LOL. As the darkness settles in, Jae-suk warns the others not to go too far lest they die.

He’s just trying to be realistic, and when Suk-jin is afraid of meeting a rattlesnake, he tells him that those only live in North America. Ha, he’s like the walking Discovery Channel. He adds that not all of them can survive the night, a comment that totally backfires on him.

The remaining five head back to the hotel where they enjoy a scrumptious-looking buffet. Da-hae remarks how romantic the scenery is, and Il-woo says he feels like the fifth wheel right now. Oh, do you need a date? Don’t mind if I do.

Gary captures a photo with the 360-degree camera, and then we’re given a glimpse into what the night and the next day will bring: a golden grasshopper and a battle against the sands of time.

I was curious and looked it up. It's 1999AED, which is approx $544 USD. Holy mother! I mean, I'm sure RM got it for free or at least some sort of discount for airing them on TV but wow... that's insane!

Wow!! Its really skyhigh price. Maybe the UEA's tourism org sponsored their trip. From the looks of the missions, all of them promoting the places/attractions in UEA.

What a great episode!

Love the antics between Jae Suk and Suk Jin. These two have so much history together.
Major props to the three who went skydiving specially Da Hae. She was so funny talking herself into (or out of) it.
Ji Hyo is such a nice partner for Gary during the minigames specially helping him out to get more time during the puzzle mission. I was hoping she'd do at least 1 extreme mission but I guess not for this race.
Was cracking up when Jae Suk told everyone that there is a possibility that only 3 out of 4 of them will survive after the night in the desert.
The show really presented Dubai so beautifully from start to finish.
Thanks for the recap Gummimochi! Can't wait for the next part.

Comparing to JIW, LDH did better. She dominated the skydiving scenes. I hope JIW will do better in the next episode. I love your smile, but you should talk more!! Maybe in next individual race he will do better.

am i the only one who think that jihyo (and gary) are on the level/kind who will take the risky task with big prize like skydive or at least that flying fox instead of passing sand and complete a puzzle? so she will have more time to nap^^. or because they only have few tickets for those games?

Reviewers glossed over the 'MC is over' line by Suk Jin, just goes to show about MC shippers. This episode was clearly scripted for MC moments. I had no problems for Mc before 2015, however now this MC shit is over scripted and getting awkward and limiting both Jihyo and Gary. They only do the MC role, I was so looking forward to Jihyo ziplining or sky diving, but instead they are doing mindless games which could have been done in Korea. Enough please with the MC, only kids and over delusional fans still believe MC. Jihyo was bored, hence all that sleeping and eating.Damn that outgoing PD, trying to create lovelines all the time, with that nonsense hearts between JK and Dae Hae - never in a million years will anyone believe that there was love between JK and Dae Hae. Please just stick to running not writing WGM. MC is so over, keep at it and see what happens even with international fans. Rant done!

I'm fed up with MC, too. It's weird how Jihyo's WAIL is about to air and Running Man is all about pushing MC together.

Usually she's like that. But maybe because this is Dubai and there're small possibility that they'll have other vacation here on their own. Thats why they choose to do many mission, so that they could enjoy more landmark instead.
I hope the skydiving team didn't really spend the rest of their time in cafe after finished the mission though. When else will they get to enjoy Dubai landmark for free!

@franbergh, gary is afraid of heights. Remember that he was pissed at kwang soo before bcoz he was afraid of the punishment? (eventhough it wasn't kwang soo fault) and btw, this dubai special ep was sponsored by the said government.

So what if Gary is afraid of heights, he gets to 'honeymoon'? Aren't Jae Suk and Kwang Soo and Suk Jin also afraid, yet they tried? Honestly Gary has been coming off being lazy yet gets the most screentime and wins on RM, I bet he's a favourite. The one thing thing that cheeses me off on the latest RM eps is how Jihyo can't be paired or photographed with anyone else but Gary. So Gary is afraid, thus he gets to say cheesy lines that someone his age should be ashamed of saying and Jihyo gets the most boring role. Poor Jihyo has been relegated to playing house on a trip that would have been so exciting. Her role in RM is becoming so forgetBle, that I almost wished that she would just leave. Come WAIL, I hope both RM and Gary and Jihyo stop this WGM shit. this is Running Man, that is why the ratings are so shameful, focus is on spinning money and drama, not running anymore.

I'm not a fan of the Monday Couple, so I just don't watch for their bits, period. The Suk Brothers made this episode for me, what with their banter, and watching Jae-suk finally take the plunge and zipline looked incredibly awesome.

Da-hae's vascillation sort of got on my nerves, but I can appreciate that skydiving from 13,000 ft sounds pretty daunting, especially if you weren't initially prepared for it. It's pretty amazing that all of them made the jump! :D

Got to love Jong-kook's instructor, though. That guy kept poking fun at Jong-kook on camera!

i dont think gary 'really' afraid of height. in early episodes he is pretty normal. remember when he jump-dive from 5m height?
after the MC thing, they make him afraid to jump from the same height when before MC he is totally cool with it. that is too obvious his character's scripted.
if they want to promote, in my opinion suk jin and jae suk could do that fine.

@ItsOver whats with someone on his age suppose not saying? He said cheesy lines, complimented ji hyo, so what? I watched Richard Gere throws some cheesy lines in his movies but no one judge him. Btw, lee kwang soo is my bias-

Pretty boring episode. Why are they running around all over, very little interaction among all the members, and why have the 2 guests, they only appeared at the beginnning and the end. Honestly, RM is becoming a yawn festival these days, what with the over promo of MC playing house (totally useless games, could have given the screentime of MC to Haha who hardly had any) and all those selfies and wefies. Enough with selfies and promoting those phones. This episode seemd like an advertisement for Dubai rather than RM. same old same old, only the setting is more glossy. Nothing new on offer.

This was actually a pretty good episode even though its not an instant classic. I always like international episodes cause we get to see really different places and I am amazed with the sights of Dubai after watching this. Jaesuk and Sukjin's banter was the best. I wished that Sukjin would have tried out that zipline though. I agree that the MC needs to be scrapped. It doesn't do the show much good and its very limiting for Gary and Jihyo. If anything else their parts were just very dull and I would rather have their screen time given to Haha and Kwangsoo who are still keeping the show have some humor.

Jihyo was pretty irritated with Gary in this episode. Gary needs to tone down the boyfriend bit. Its just annoying now, throwing in she's my girlfriend for free ice cream, hey what are you 15? These days I think RM is targetting teenage audiences. Poor Jihyo can only be the Monday girlfriend and then betrayed by Gary and yet still need to spend time with him in the car on the way back - not only scripted but overscripted. MC is overdone, and soon even international fans will get tired of it. Only Gary fans lap it up and keep shouting they are real....6 years is long enough, move on to newer roles please. Give me more Kwang Soo, Hahah and Suk Jin. These 3 are the saving grace of RM now.

I know right, I never had the impression that Jihyo enjoyed the MC concept in the first place. They really just should stop forcing it and the PDs needs to encourage it to stop as well. I mean there's other characters that could put both of them back in the game. I always thought that Gary is actually strong and feel that he can be a rival to Jongkook. Jihyo should go back more to the feisty character she had in the earlier RM. It would be a lot more entertaining than watching them both exchange dull and corny love lines

These days Gary comes off as being lazy and having it easy. Only needs to do read a script of corny lines and he keeps winning. RM comes across as being scripted quite a lot. Characters are not growing, they keep playing same games with characters spewing same lines, especially the MC. It seems like Jihyo is pretty bored with MC these days, who wouldn't be, not being able to push your limits but stuck with a douche bag of a boyfriend who is not even loyal - he betrayed Jihyo in this ep, so what does it say about MC, then they travel back together. Jihyo should have given him a kick in his ****. If they are going to script a loveline at least make it seem like a proper one. Give us the feisty Jihyo back. Gary comes across as being lazy and a douche, not romantic. I honestly don't see what is real about them, that the MC fans keep harping about. Anyways, the next episode better give MC a rest and get with the show. Focus on the other 5 if the MC is redundant.

I'm not mc fan nor ji hyo or gary fan.but when ji hyo all acts lady like or just force herself to laugh as a reaction what to do want of pd? Gary's just doing his role.yeah his words are cheesy and not suitable for his age but pd want him to do so. both of them should make new characters for themselves and contribute more to Rm or leave it.mc is what giving them lots of money while they don't do much specially ji hyo. she should say she's tired of it ,doesn't want it ,can do better without it. if there's criticism about it, it should be for both of them.

@harem what i'm trying to say is "gary's character is change" before and after MC with example 5 m dive not the gary can jump from thousands ft. before MC is made, he can jump 5 m just fine but after MC he act like scaredy cat plus that almost crying expression when he have to jump from the same height. why did he change like that if its not for the script, btw it's not movie which the casts should change their character based on the script. i think their real character is what make them loved until today. but if youre a MC fan, i cant say anything about that.

How is Gary "selfish" when he had sacrificed himself plenty for Ji-hyo (who had no problem taking advantage of it).

Only lately has Gary been willing to go after Ji-hyo's name-tag as a last resort (if that's what's standing btwn him and winning).

Also, in the eps w/ the biggest prizes - Gary has either won them or has come really close (a "lazy" person wouldn't have been able to do that).

Everything you see on TV are all scripted to a certain extend, it is all for the sake of entertainment. I bet the running man cast and the crew already discussed about the missions before filming. Gary and Jihyo always together as Monday couple. Haha, kwangsoo are the jokers in the show. Ji suk Jin and yoo Jae suk have great chemistry because they knew each other for so long. As usual, Spartakook is the toughest and bravest, who choose skydiving with the two guests. No surprise because they are playing their characters. Nowadays, there are many complaints about running man and they are losing their fans. I think it's true that Running Man need to reconstruct their game structures and better editing.

Where are people watching Eng-subbed Running Man? I used to watch it on youtube, but then they started showing only brief clips instead of entire episodes.

Viki is a major pain on my computer. It keeps jamming every other second. Hulu is better, but they only show brief clips, too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

This was an OK ep.

The gang was separated too much for there to be enough fun banter (altho YJS and SJ did their share).

Disappointed in SJ for chickening out - YJS and Kwangsoo (as well as others like Haha) also have issues w/ height, but despite their fears, soldiered on (altho, KS got nothing out of it); being the "Prince of Asia" has really paid dividends for KS.

Didn't like the LDH the time she was on before when she just whined/acted afraid and had Oh Ji-ho do all the heavy/dirty work for her, but have to give her credit for going ahead w/ the skydiving jump (surprised that Ji-hyo didn't go for that).

Figures that the ladies weren't going to get the punishment (regardless of LDH skydiving) of staying in the desert in a tent.

Wow, so much negative comments about MC. Yes it is contrived and I wish they would end it, but it did not seem like they did not pull their weight in the missions. They still got 7 stamps each. I was looking forward to Ji Hyo's being a dare devil again, but it seemed like she was was having fun in a relaxed vacation trying local treats.

What a stunning international episode way better than the Aussie ones. Haha and Kwang-soo banters were the most enjoyable pity they didn't get much screentime compare to the MC. Lee Da-hae and the skydiving team were rock and roll! Hope I can get to experience it for once in my life.
