The two most devilishly genius minds in the nation are now at war, and what a terrible one it promises to be. Great for us viewers as far as entertainment value goes, but terrible for anyone caught in its path, since neither Bang-won or Jung Do-jeon have much consideration for the little man. There are machinations aplenty as the two men take the chance to be decent to each other and squish it under the toppling weight of their respective egos, which I suppose shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point, but still.
Team Bang-won all the way though.

EPISODE 40 RECAP
Jung Do-jeon and Yooksan sit down to a tense meeting, with neither of them saying what they’re really thinking—namely, with Yooksan wondering whether Jung knew that Nameless would show up, and Jung wondering whether he’s walked into a Nameless trap.
A bit belatedly, Bang-ji notices that all the men (with the exception of Seon-dol, Boon-yi’s young spy) inside the Mansang Merchants building are mercenaries, and realizes he has to get Jung Do-jeon to safety as of yesterday.
Back inside, Yooksan begins to put the pieces together after his spy tells him of Jung Do-jeon’s meeting with Mohenpa, the Jurchen chief. He knows that whatever transpired will be in that red envelope Jung carried out, so he orders one of his men to obtain it without engaging the unmatched Bang-ji in a fight.
Once Jung Do-jeon finds out that Cho-young was seen lurking around Mansang Merchants, he has all the confirmation he needs that the group is controlled by Nameless. He immediately heads to the government office in nearby Kanggye to order the arrest of all Mansang Merchants, and sends the red envelope to Yeon-hee in the capital.
Bang-won is not happy that Da-kyung had Boon-yi send spies to follow Jung Do-jeon without notifying him first, since there shouldn’t be anything happening in the household that he’s not apprised of.
Ha Ryun picks a bad time to come upon the squabbling couple, but advises the two that unification, not division, is the only way they’ll be able to withstand the coming storm. But a more welcome visit comes in the form of older brother Bang-gan, who’s entreated their father to have an audience with Bang-won after so much silence between them.
Their ensuing meeting is not a warm one, with King Taejo asking his son directly whether he’s involved with Nameless. After a moment, Bang-won says that he most definitely is not in league with such rebellious people. Why, the mere thought of it is enough to make him sick!
Since Bang-won and Jukryong are buddies now, he tells his monkish friend about his conversation with his father, and how he vowed to take any punishment meted out should it be found that he is in league with Nameless. Which is ironic, cause, y’know.
It’s then that Jukryong tells him that Jung Do-jeon met with Jurchen chief Mohenpa, which isn’t in and of itself surprising. What is though, is that Jung went disguises as a merchant.
Even Bang-ji seems uneasy about whatever Jung Do-jeon is planning when it comes to the Jurchen chiefs, especially with Liaodong (the failed Liaodong Expedition being the reason why King Taejo turned the army around) being involved. Jung Do-jeon is noncommittal and purposefully vague about the whole matter, so for now, we wait.
While wondering about Jung Do-jeon’s plan themselves, Cho-young acts on a hunch and uses charcoal on the stack of parchment to discover the Red Seal impression left behind from Jung Do-jeon’s experiment. Since this means he knows they’re Nameless, Cho-young urges Yooksan to leave before he can be caught.
The Hwasadan Amazonian carrying the red envelope back to Yeon-hee has it filched from her by a common thief, which is when all hell breaks loose. The Nameless warrior sent to retrieve the envelope jumps into the fray, but before he can grab it, little Seon-dol snatches it and runs.
The warrior has no idea Seon-dol has handed the envelope off to his hyung when he finds the boy in the street, and it’s only when he mercilessly cuts him down that he discovers he doesn’t have it. Now Nameless has no idea who does, so they send Cho-young off, only for her to be trailed by one of her own spies now turned against her.
Jung Do-jeon gets two bits of crushing news in short order: first, that everyone cleared from Mansang Merchants before they could be arrested, and that the red envelope was stolen. If it were to get into the wrong hands, especially in the hands of the Ming Empire, Jung knows he’d be toast.
Young-kyu reports that Shin-jeok is mad as hell about Jung Do-jeon going through Hwasadan rather than the official state-sanctioned bureau to Bang-won, who’s becoming more and more curious about whatever Jung is planning. It must be serious if he’s going through such secret channels and causing unrest within his own people, but what could it be?
Now everyone’s on the hunt for the mysterious red envelope, with both Nameless and Jung Do-jeon on high alert. He references Myojakdan again (he mentioned it last episode), in regards to whatever-it-is being ready, while Nameless starts thinking about contacting Ming over Jung Do-jeon’s meeting with the Jurchen chief. Even though they, like us, don’t fully understand what’s happening yet.
Seon-dol’s body is brought back to Boon-yi and her people, who all lament the loss of their youngest member. Boon-yi sinks to her knees in tears, but only allows herself to shed a few before her expression goes still.
She’s given the red envelope the poor boy died protecting, feeling immense guilt because he went that extra mile just to earn her praise. She finds herself back at Seon-dol’s corpse, and with tears running down her cheeks, she wraps his one shoeless foot with linen as a sock and uses her own shoe as a replacement. Aw.
After all her tears are gone, Boon-yi talks to her old neighborhood ajusshi without really talking to him, her mind somewhere else. She mentions how it was her idea to cultivate the wasteland, and that little girl died when they got caught. And now, with Seon-dol dead…
Ajusshi asks if she’s really blaming herself for these deaths, but Boon-yi doesn’t seem to listen. “Back then, I was thinking that if I received my [portion of the] land, I could back there by myself. I must have lost my mind. So I told Seon-dol to just go. If it were like other times, I wouldn’t have sent that child.”
Then she looks pleadingly up at him as she asks, “Should we all just give up?” But then she corrects herself, sounding more like Old Boon-yi: “Still, I should try something, whatever it is. Before someone else dies.”
Da-kyung informs her husband that Boon-yi wants to meet him in the New Joseon Cave, which means she’s made a decision. Though, according to Da-kyung, her decision doesn’t matter: “You must keep her by your side at all costs.” She starts going into why, but Bang-won shuts her down by saying he’ll take care of it.
But when he arrives at the cave, he finds none other than Jung Do-jeon, Bang-ji, and Boon-yi there. She apologizes for putting them in this position and asks their forgiveness, but she simply must say her piece.
First she addresses Bang-won, and how he asked her to make a choice. Bang-won responds by all but growling at her to be quiet, before she addresses Jung Do-jeon telling her he had no choice but to take all authority away from the princes in order to create a peaceful nation. Jung Do-jeon also jumps down her throat for speaking out of turn.
Still, she persists. She knows about what happened in this cave from Yeon-hee, and feels nothing but sympathy for what Jung Do-jeon went through with the loss of all those children. “There was a child names Seon-dol. Yes, there was. That child, too, more than anyone, desperately wished for a new nation to be ushered in.”
Even though that nation was ushered in, the poor boy still died a horrible death while shadowing Jung Do-jeon. And one of Yeon-hee’s spies was murdered while shadowing Bang-won. She just can’t understand why these sorts of things are happening.
“I shall sincerely ask for your favor,” she concludes. “For Moo-hyul, my orabeoni, myself, and the countless anonymous people who fought with their lives for you… if you fight, do not stomp on those people. And please, save us.”
Jung Do-jeon may as well have patted her on the head for trying, but there’s just no dice: “I shall do what I need to do, and His Highness [Bang-won] shall do what he needs to do. We shall have no choice but to continue forth acting according to our beliefs.”
Bang-won is of a similar mindset, thinking it foolish that Boon-yi called them both out here to reconcile. In that case, Boon-yi says she’ll withdraw all her people, and asks Jung Do-jeon to make good on his promise to give her land so that they can make a living.
Before Jung Do-jeon can say no, Bang-won does. His expression is cold as he levels her with a stare and responds, “I told you… that if you leave of your own volition, I would not stop you and respect your decision. But that was it. Nothing more than that.”
Similarly, Jung says he won’t give her the land she and her people so clearly deserve. Because they’re both being complete dicks right now.
Prepared for this eventuality, Boon-yi says she’ll stop pleading, and start deal-making. In her hand are two envelopes—one white, one red (the red envelope)—both containing vital and dangerous information on Jung Do-jeon and Bang-won, respectively. She’ll sell the information to the highest bidder if that’s what she must do for her people to survive.
Jung Do-jeon asks to be alone with Bang-won to talk about their options, and tells the prince that while he can’t give Boon-yi land, he’ll think of another way for her and her people to live. Bang-won wonders what’s in that red envelope for it to be so important to him, only for Jung to fire back, “You’ll come to know that in time.”
Bang-won tries to be civil about the deal, but his emotions get the best of him when he blurts, “Do you not think I’ll be able to do a good job if I am in charge?! Do you hate this nation, or the idea of an exceptional king?” To that, Jung Do-jeon responds that the whole point of his new nation is so that an “exceptional king” won’t be able to control everything.
“So you are trying to monopolize your power in finances, full authority, and military power?” Bang-won fires back. That’s just temporary, Jung Do-jeon retorts, which seems like the excuse all despots use.
But it’s when Bang-won says he’s heard the ohchik, and the rules about princes within, that Jung Do-jeon realizes that must’ve been when Bang-won turned his back on him. Bang-won confirms his suspicion while defending his decision, since what else was he supposed to do when there was no place for him from the beginning?
Since neither of them are planning on giving in, they’re at an impasse. Jung Do-jeon vows to find a way to end things so that Bang-won can cast aside his greed, while Bang-won says he’s relieved that Jung isn’t going to try and “persuade” him the way he failed to do with Jung Mong-joo.
They find Boon-yi waiting outside the cave, and she’s filled with thanks when Jung Do-jeon tells her that he’ll install her people in Banchon, the village for servants of Sungkyunkwan. There, her people will be gainfully employed while doing good for the nation, which is about as good a deal as she could’ve hoped to get.
She thanks him by giving him the red envelope, but when she turns to give the white one to Bang-won, he coldly pushes past her without taking it. She follows him to try to give him the letter, which he tells her to throw out: “Don’t toy with me over something fake again. That was too close.”
Ah, so he knew she was bluffing with the white envelope, since the page inside is empty. She asks why he didn’t call her out if he knew it was fake, to which he replies, “Hard to say. Though I’m living with a beast’s heart, I probably… remembered what it was like to live as a human. I wanted to act like a human, if only for a moment.” As for how he knew, he simply says that she can’t fool him, just like he can’t fool her.
It’s then that she asks about the bug in his heart, and whether it’s swallowed him. Bang-won says it doesn’t matter whether he swallowed it or it swallowed him, if it’s a means to survive, it’s what he has to do. Surviving is what’s most important, he tells her, as is anything she needs to do in order to accomplish that.
Later that night, Bang-won comes to a decision about Jung Do-jeon while watching Boon-yi attend Seon-dol’s funeral. Shin-jeok stops him before he can leave, asking for a private audience.
Jung Do-jeon has also got his nemesis on the mind, and again asks Yeon-hee whether Myojakdan is ready. She hesitates, but says it will be today.
Shin-jeok wants to switch over to Bang-won’s side and serve him, and even though Bang-won knows he’s been waffling for a while, he still wonders whether Shin-jeok is acting on Jung Do-jeon’s orders. How else to explain his willingness to turn away from the man he’s served his entire life?
“How am I going to believe that?” Bang-won asks with mock incredulity. “Whichever it is, try to persuade me better.” So Shin-jeok tells him that it’s mainly because Jung Do-jeon made a secret agreement with the Jurchen chief Mohenpa, though he has no idea what it contained.
The reason he has no idea is because Jung Do-jeon does all his conspiratorial work with Yeon-hee, leaving the court out of it. Jung’s power is out of control, Shin-jeok adds, and the checks and balances system he came up with has been set aside and forgotten.
“The country I wanted to make was not this kind of country,” he concludes. Furthermore, he’s being wasted under Jung Do-jeon, and wants to be put to use by Bang-won.
Cho-young unexpectedly arrives then, having received an anonymous letter to head to his house immediately. Bang-won doesn’t know how to react when he didn’t send her the letter, which has clearly been forged. Oh no, it’s a trap!
It’s an accurate forgery though, which reminds Bang-won of how Ha Ryun had described the daunting amount of time and patience—years, at least—to be able to forge handwriting like this. Back then, he knew it had to be Hwasadan who trained the con artists, and Cho-young’s eyes widen as she murmurs, “Myojakdan.”
Finally, we know what Jung Do-jeon has been talking about. Cho-young is incensed that Yeon-hee would use the people she trained against her, but the realization comes too late. Jung Do-jeon, Officer Nam, Yeon-hee, and an army are coming for them.
In order to accomplish this great feat of forgery, Yeon-hee collected samples of Bang-won’s handwriting back from his Sungkyunkwan days and beyond. Bang-won tries to usher Cho-young out before they can be caught, but it’s no use—Jung Do-jeon is already at his front door.
Jung Do-jeon all but tsks at both Bang-won and Shin-jeok, the former for allying with Nameless, and the latter for trying to switch sides. “Did you create this scheme in order to stop me?” Bang-won asks. Jung Do-jeon says the forgery doesn’t matter, when Cho-young came flying in the middle of the night after receiving a letter from him when she’s Nameless.
When asked if he really thinks he can take him down with just a letter, Jung Do-jeon says no. Which is why he brought along some security… in the form of King Taejo. Yiiiikes.
“Arrest him this instant!” King Taejo orders, eyes locked on his son. But Bang-won stares only at Jung Do-jeon, who stares right back.
COMMENTS
Yesssss. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun to watch Jung Do-jeon and Bang-won go at each other from behind each other’s backs, but nothing can be as gratifying as seeing them come out in the open with metaphorical swords drawn. And in this case, the pen really was mightier than the sword.
Even though Bang-won has done plenty of wrong and may very well deserve what is being dished out, it’s impossible not to sympathize with him when all he wanted was a strong authority figure to follow. He had dreams and wanted them realized, but when his father failed him and even the man he wanted to be his father failed him, the only authority figure righteous enough for him to follow became, well, him.
It’s too late now to wonder whether things might’ve been different had Jung Do-jeon showed him some compassion, or even a hint of gratitude, since snubbing his accomplishments was sort of the last straw. That’s been a running theme with Jung Do-jeon lately though—he uses people and then he throws them away. What happened to the compassionate leader who gathered a band of ideological misfits under his wing? How can he be so cold to the girl he practically helped raise under his ideals?
Needless to say, I was shocked that both Bang-won and Jung Do-jeon were so hostile to Boon-yi, even though Bang-won was actually sorta-kinda protecting her by doing so. Jung Do-jeon had no excuse, and only employed her people in order to get his precious red envelope. I wonder if it’s just that he thinks he’s untouchable now, and doesn’t need the people who helped him get to the position he’s in. I also wonder if he realizes what a hypocrite he is, since it makes no sense to take away absolute power from the monarchy only to give that same absolute power to one other guy.
You’re still dealing with the same problem in the lack of checks and balances, which is/was supposed to be the whole point. If Jung Do-jeon’s plan was to make the king a flower, then all he’s done is switch the hands that hold the power, when true change would’ve come from spreading that power out so it wouldn’t just lie in one pair of hands. But I guess if that man is you, and you’re Jung Do-jeon, why would you ever choose to give all that power away without a fight?

thats a new low for jung do jeong how can ruin whats little left from bang won and his father relationship. Lee seong gye is so dumb , how can he order to arrest bang won , the guy saved your life gave you the crown. First you deny all of his accomplishment , you name your favor son crown prince and now you order his arrest. sambong started playing dirty first can't wait for bang won fightback. Sambong has all the power in his hand but thats not enough and now he is going after bang won first, well he is the one who started the attack bang won now will not hold back.

Sambong has completely forgotten that without Bangwon's interference in killing Poeun, he would be DEAD!!! There would be no new king and NO JOSEON! Talk about ungrateful!

Funny how the tables have turned. I actually feel sorry for Cho Young, when you think about it, was a pretty decent boss to Yeon hee. And I am seriously disliking Yeon hee, right now. Sam Bong is a close second.
And Sam Bong, he changed after Po Eun's death (which he could have prevented by not being an ostrich ) and has become a power hungry despot.
He has able, capable young men with sharp, keep minds at his disposal. Why not utilize them and share power? Instead he sidelines them, giving them empty titles with little tasks and no authority. And is brewing resentments with this attitude. Shame.

Yes! Cho Young was a pretty decent boss to Yeon-hee. She genuinely cared for Yeon-hee's safety when Bang-Ji pretended to have caught Yeon-hee as a spy at Hwasadan.
How Yeon-hee managed to become the Daebang is questionable because it was obvious the girls spared her life only under the order of the Lead Spy (the one who followed JDJ to meet the Jurchen chief).

Yeon-hee was the second in command during Cho-yong times. I guess when it was revealed that Cho-yong was working for Hwasadan, the Lead Spy decided they would follow Yeon-hee's order instead.

I think the writers are trying to make a connection between her character here to the flashback in Tree.
She was taken by Bang-won's men in order to lure Bangi Ji away from Sambong so Bang-won can kill him. She realized that it was a trap so she killed herself in order for Bang Ji to go back to Sambong because he was trying to save her.
It's clear that she chose Sambong and she is doing whatever she can to help him. I don't see anything wrong with her choice. It's dog eat dog time. Bang-won's followers are doing whatever they can to help him too.

I think the angst is mainly stemming from her manipulation of Bang-ji for her/JDJ's cause, and her dogmatic views on how Boon-yi should leave Bang-won and go back to her village. Boon-yi is a strong, intelligent and independent woman who can make her own choices, Yeon-hee has no business telling Boon-yi who's side she should be standing on.

I agree. I'm not angry at Yeonhee for choosing JDJ. I'm angry at her trying to separate the siblings, send Boonyi away yet keep Bangji around to guard JDJ. Also she has to know Bangji is only in this fight for his sister and Yeonhee. Why not invite Boonyi to work for JDJ instead of just getting rid of her and her network.

I'm pretty sure that Bang Ji and Bong Yi are capable of making choices for themselves no matter what.
There are 10 more episodes and the writers are not going to reveal the end yet on who ends up with who because it keeps the viewers guessing.
My guess is that both Bong Yi and Bang Ji will be on Sambong's camp in the end. They followed him from the very beginning and will be in the end. I think Bong Yi will choose her people over love. She will do what is good for her people. That was her mission from the very beginning.
(I could be wrong here but that's just the way I see it).
Moo-hyul has always been loyal to Bang-won from the very beginning and will stick with him till the end. He may hesitate to kill on the spot but he will learn to obey commands from Bang-won no matter what. Kind of like what he did with king Sejong in eps 2 of Tree.

I'm going to give him credit as an adult and a swordsman of Joseon that he remained loyal to Sambong by choice as his protector and not because he was manipulated by Yeon Hee.
It's also safe to say that he stayed because he loves Yeon Hee and wanted to protect her whether she felt the same way or not.
Yeon Hee made her choice already. Bong Yi hasn't. What's wrong with her trying to help her own side by telling Bong Yi to return to her village? Bang-won didn't hesitate to tell Bong Yi where she stands if she chose Sambong.
Frankly, I'm not on any side. I'm looking at both side's point of view.

I laugh my ass off every time I see someone say that YeonHee manipulated BangJi into staying. What. The. Heck. NO. Not at all. YeonHee never asked him to choose her and she never gave him a speck of hope. If BangJi stayed that was his own choice. Yes, maybe he chose to stay for YeonHee but heck, that was his own doing and none of YeonHee's control whatsoever. She didn't ask him to leave but she didn't ask/plead him to stay either.
And also more importantly, he's staying for now because he doesn't know what to do and he has no where else to go. That land reform thing? Yeah, Jung DoJeon is apparently so over his head he can't give any out even when the surveying and calculations are done, so no farmland for DdangSae to go back and live with his sister.

The land thing really pisses me off. JDJ held out hope to the laymen that they will be rewarded with farmland if they served his cause. They help him out and serve him faithfully, and now that he finally has his goal accomplished, he says they can't have land after all. "It belongs to Joseon (Duh, the people are Joseon!). Why not live in Banchon and try not to be servants but use your skills to survive?".
I understand it was the best deal Boon Yi and her people could hope for under the circumstances, but it still sounds mighty underhanded to me.

it would have been easy to make that change if it happen in our time without the complicated class system. I was hoping they'd at least qualify as merit subjects but they are commoners, the lowest in rank so the other higher class nobles and scholars would get their share first and Banchon was the only other option.
In some ways I'm glad they weren't part of the land distribution because the merit subjects that received land from Lee Seong-gye weren't paying taxes on it. When Bang-won became king he discovered their hidden land and made them pay.
If this Banchon is anything like the one in Tree than they would be protected and well fed. That's a lot better than their previous life. I'd take the deal if I were Bong Yi.

If they were given land I don't think they would have been able to keep it for their children and their children's children etc. The cycle of abused and powerful nobles would've taken their land again.

One thing, moohyul in sfd is around the age of boonyi and bangwon, moohyul in tree is around the age of sejong, if not, not more than a decade older… meanwhile, bangwon is a grandpa in tree... so…… did moohyul stopped aging since late 30s or 40s… or did he had a son and named him moohyul too???? … alot of illogical things started ever since the writers tried too hard to connect sfd to queen seondeok, and now, they are trying to add connection to tree by making boonyi be the leader in banchon (atleast from what it seems).. these are on the level of starwars ep 3 trying too hard to connect to new hope(why did obiwan not know leia, and more more.)

Bong Yi and her people are commoners even if they were living at Banchon Village. Moo-hyul at the time was promoted as the official bodyguard for King Sejong. He would be talking down to anyone in that village while in the king's errant imo.
It makes very little sense in some ways but it doesn't in more ways especially when you think about their current relationship. There has been inconsistencies between the characters in Tree and SFD already so maybe there is an explanation later?

Its still possible for boonyi to the banchon leader considering all the other inconsistencies of the connections between the drama, also they werent thinking of a prequel during the making of tree.. and if boonyi isnt the exact leader in the time of twdr, her organisation could still be the same as the one in tree, and she just gavd the leadership to another girl or something before dying(alot of people says she might die and theres a lot of possibilities it would happen).

your argument that the writers are illogical in regards to Moohyul are a reach because I don't believe that his age was ever out-rightly stated in the drama. Yes he's the same age as Bangwon etc. but you're essentially saying that Jo Jinwoong looked "too young" for the role is a pretty superficial and a non issue imo. The actor brought the character to life in Tree, and Yoon Kyunsang is doing a marvelous job emulating the expressions here in SFD.
It may bother you that Jo Jinwoong didn't "look" his age, but as his age was never actually stated, it's a waste of time to even care about a detail such as the casting that happened way back in 2011 for the role.

The moohyul part was a joke/sarcasm actually.... i dont really take the connection between the dramas too seriously.. sfd was never in mind when making twdr.. and its loosely based on it.. but these days it feels like theyre trying too hard to connect the series together, rhe moomyung foundation and purpose is bullshit.. and though logically, boonyi cant be banchon lady, it seems theyre trying too hard to make her banchon lady even giving it a problem or story, (the deal part in the cave). Theyre also trying too hard to give relevance and connection to the fictional characters, especially boony(people would definitely kill me with this statement).at this point, her really isnt much use to her aside from bamgwon to use against jdj(her organisation is basically another information gathering "agency" like hwasadan and the monk ones)... anyways, there is so much potential on the jdj vs lbw arc, but its quite a mess right now.. but they can still easily revive back.. thats why im curious to see whats going to happen

I think the whole Boonyi becoming Dodamdaek is a total red herring though? It remains to be seen, I do think that the writers are trying to throw viewers off at this point, I doubt that they would actually go there with Boonyi's character.

Theres a larger chance that its a redherring than the writers trying too hard to connect dramas without the consideration of logic(moohyul was talking down to the banchon leader in twdr, so it doesnt make sense. But moohyul in here generally talk to everyone respectfully, i dont think he has ever talked down to anyone hes talked to. And in twdr idont think hes like that to everyone he meets). But there is tons of inconsistencies in the connection between the dramas.. but theres alot of possibilities the organisation is the same as the one in tree.. she could have had just given the leadership to another person.. probably before dying alot of people are saying she might die, or probably when she decided to become bangwon's concubine, or she decided her organisation shouldnt mess with the problem now so she sent them to banchon to live normally but when she died they decided to form the organisation again..

I think it depends on which side you are looking at it. She might have been concern for Bong Yi and her people and thought they would be safer away from this internal war.
It is also possible that she wanted her out of the way so she won't end up joining Bang-won's side. That would be a big disadvantage for Sambong.
Bong Yi will make a decision for the benefit of her people and that is consistent with her character.

@thelady I agree. Bang-ji started out as a really cool and promising character, top swordsmen and all. But sadly as the plot progressed his character took a back seat. Most of his scenes involve him staring into space looking pained, standing behind someone with no dialogue. A little sad that Byun Yo-han is kind of wasted by the scriptwriter like that.

But Yeon Hee knows that Boon Yi'a dream was to return back to their hometown. Yeon Hee believes that Boon Yi and her people have accomplished pretty much what they wanted to do so they should return to their homes and be safe. It's also clear that Yeon Hee still cares about Bang Ji, but she isn't the girl she used to be just like he isn't the boy he used to be. JDJ gave Yeon Hee a reason to live and hope when she didn't have that, so of course she will continue to follow him.

Current JDJ remind me a little of Baek-an (Bayan) of Empress Ki. Before he got rid of the corrupted Yeon-chul, he was all rightous and sad to see his hero (Yeon-chul) dropped to such low. But after he became the prime minister, he started to abuse his power to shape the country based on his judgement. He genuinely believe it was for the good of his country though. JDJ is the same. Force his own ideal onto others and fail to see contradictions in himself.

I don't either Nathan and that's part of the reason why I couldn't watch anymore. This is not the Sambong from history. I could tell from eps eps 30s that they are totally going to twist the hell out of the history and make a villain out of him.
(I didn't expect them to follow Tears of the Dragon or Jeong Do Jeon but the change is huge and that's why I said that his character together with Poeun and Lee Seong-gye have gone totally bipolar). Oh well, that's fusion for you.

I never realized how important was a living Jeong Mung Joo to Jeong Do Jeon, until this episode. All while Poeun was alive and acting like a morality chain, Sambong doesn't cross the moral line, opting for a civil approach. Soon as he's dead, there's no one to ground Sambong. Brilliant show, brilliant. Despite the plot hole with Moo Hyul's wonky age.
That empty letter Boon Yi trick pulled on Bang-Won reminded me of Lady Min pulling a similar stunt earlier on during their marriage. I like to think that Boon Yi is finally benefiting from the books Lady Min loaned her when they first moved out from Yi Seong Gye's home.
Side note, I found Ha Ryun (Future PM) attempting to keep peace between Bang-Won and Lady (Future King & Queen) is amusing though. Bet that won't be his last encounter of such kind.

Boon-yi was awesome in this episode! I was hoping that she´ll step out of the fight, though giving up all the hard work and begin a new life as a farmer certainly had a sting to it. Still, I trusted her to be smart enough to turn away from BW, love be damned, and I was so, so relieved that Bang-won let her go.
And the blackmailing was so clever! Deserves you right, Sambong! Though, honestly, was it really that hard to think of Banchon before she started waving the letter under your nose?

Awesome episode as always. I'm startled at all of the hate going around in the comment section in recent times, but whatever, this always happens to all dramas at some point. Can't please everyone I guess.
So glad that Boonyi finally took initiative and did something instead of wallowing around in her indecision. Jung Dojeon's way of talking to her smells of a growing superiority complex, which is just ridiculous and makes me want to root for Bangwon more.
I actually feel kind of bad for Lee Shinjeok? The man he has served for years doesn't really care about him or even bother to use him in meaningful ways. No wonder he shifted sides, can't really blame him. Although I'm starting to see how his personality is shaping and becoming like what we have seen in TWDR. (lack of solid loyalty, lots of waning back and forth) I thought he was quite weak willed when I was watching Tree, but now I see him like this, and yeah, I understand him a bit better now even though I personally don't like him all that much.
I'm sure that there are many people who will disagree with me, but so far the writers have stayed at least 80% consistent in linking this world to their other dramas. (I'm especially talking about TWDR, because I haven't seen QSD)
I honestly DO NOT understand why I have kept seeing people commenting that Moohyul said that HE DIDN'T KNOW Bangji in TWDR? I assure you, I have recently rewatched the whole drama and there was no line like that coming out of his mouth. The things that DID happen:
1. He fought Bangji, he lost.
2. He didn't see Bangji for many years after that significant fight.
If anything, the encounter that eventually happens towards the latter half of TWDR, suggests that Moohyul and Bangji did know each other. Heck the bromance was lost but it wasn't like it was complete strangers, which is what some people have been harping on about & unjustly calling out the writers for being inconsistent in the portrayal of this particular relationship.
I'm starting to think that some people are just confused with Moohyul & Jo Malsaeng tbh. Jo Malsaeng was initially denying a lot of things tbh.
He never said "I don't know him". If I'm wrong about this, then by all means, find that episode and time stamp the moment he states that. ><

I don't remember what Moo Hyul said about Bang Ji in Trees but here Bang ji looks just a few years older than Moo Hyul, whereas in Trees, Lee Bang Ji is reallly old grandpa and Moo Hyul still look like he's in he's 30-40s. But you know when they made Trees, they weren't exactly planning a prequel. And I think they cast the perfect actors in both drama. Let's just disregard the age issues.

You are mistaken. People who watched Tree were saying that Moo-hyul didn't know Bang Ji this well in TWDR. "I don't know him" is you misunderstanding their comments.
I'm pretty sure Moo-hyul said he was a kid back then in Tree. He is not a kid here and Bang Ji was probably 20yrs old when they met. Moo-hyul's age is not mentioned but they can't be more than 5yrs in age difference here.

Nope, some people were making it out to be a statement that he had actually said in Tree, and that's where they were getting their inferences from. This won't apply to everyone and yes there would be people like you that would have proposed the same meaning, as you have just stated, but I was just pointing out that some people were saying that "I don't know him" was an actual statement made in TWDR, when in fact there was no statement like that made. One of the main reasons why I rewatched the drama was to clarify whether that statement was ever said.

I've only seen maybe 1 or 2 comments about Moo-hyul not knowing Bang Ji in TWDR.
The fact remains that Moo-hyul didn't seems to know Bang Ji as well as he does here. They've worked together to build a new nation since the early 1380s when they met Sambong. It has been around 10 yrs or so and more by the end of this drama. That is inconsistent when compared to their characters in Tree.

Nameless has been pointless for at least 10 episodes now, I wish they didn't have so much screen time. I would rather that time be given to Lady Min who is a much more interesting and historical character that should have been a dragon.

yeah! the preview blew my mind a bit especially at the part where Nameless' hideout was discovered but Yeon-Hyang stayed to face Bang-Ji and asked him to kill her like wow that will be so heartbreaking to watch but I can't wait haha

yeeess.....team Bang Won all the way. History put aside, the real JDJ put aside and now i am blaming JDJ and LSG for turning Bang Won into what he is right now and in the future.
I like it that BW still has a soft spot in his heart for BY but he needs to prepare of whatever thing and scheme JDJ aiming at him. Now BW if BY doesnt want to side you, leave her. you still have Lady Min. Be cunning my dragon..do whatever it is necessary to be on top of the world. And wipe that smile from Yeon Hee’s face.

I believe BW would have turned dark eventually given his ideological disconnect with JDJ. He would not have accepted being a toothless Crown Prince... JSG's and JDJ's actions just hastened the process and the writers are making it less of a moral dilemma for us to side with BW.
Looking at BY and MH's reactions at the end of the episode, I think they will throw their support behind BW. BY's villagers may be heading to Banchon but she will be staying back. Believe BW's transition to the dark side will be complete when BY dies...

I know he really does need his brain back.LSG is being all kinds of a monster to BW at this point. He never even thanked his son for carting his injured self through the woods thus enabling him to become king. Even if he doesn't want BW to succeed him he should be acting as more of a father to his son right now. Sambong, I do not blame for he has a near fanaticism for his beliefs this means he will throw anyone away who threatens those ideals,he never hid that from the very start only making an exception with JMJ and that did not end well. Therefore this ruthless behaviour towards Boon Yi and Bang Won is understandable. As for Yeon Hee, all I can wish for her is a huge mob to come after her with pitch forks and torches.

Yes, this! LSG has never even acknowledged the role that Bang Won played in saving him from assassination and putting him on the throne! Instead, the minute he woke up from his stupor, he demanded that Bang Won kill himself. Selective anemsia? Lol! I hope we see some badass Bang Won next week.

Yessss Team Bang-won all the way! At the end of this episode I was all but screaming DIE JUNG DO-JEON DIE. That was such a low blow I can't believe he'd actually resort to that. I'm feeling the same hurt and disbelief I experienced when Jung Mong-Joo impeached JDJ for his lineage problem.
I can't help but to be sympathetic to Bang-won for his vulnerability and isolation. As if being stripped of power isn't enough, now he's stripped of his love from his father too. How cruel of you, JDJ.
I've always loved the Lee family for their deep love for each other, but I've lost all respect for Lee Seong-gye now. How dare you (and JDJ) used your own sons and toss them aside like this?
I wasn't sure of Boon-yi's allegiance initially, but I'm quite sure she's going to stick with Bang-won to the end now.
I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but that emotionally charged moment when Bang-won told Boon-yi not to lie to him anymore because she just can't lie to him just like he isn't able to lie to her, I couldn't help but to tear. I'm shipping them right to the very end. (':

So far, in all his schemes, JDJ has never stooped so low as to frame someone. He has blind-sided him and used trickery but never anything like this. Seems like his power is making him into a Joseon Lee In Geom, who tried to use the same technique to frame LSG and BW earlier. i dislike him even more.

When Boon Yi said, "Okay, pleading done, time for negotiation," I was crowing with delight. Way to go, kickass Boon Yi! Bang Ji has done nothing these past few episodes but to mope and look vaguely constipated, which was annoying, since I was really impressed with him picking up the Goksan method just like that. Also, someone's comment about Jung Do Jeon being like Bayan from Empress Ki was spot on. Another Empress Ki similarity I observed: I saw a comment a few episodes back saying that Bang Won's affection for Boon Yi is all but gone. Eh. The first thing that the chick saw upon hatching. T_T

I just don't like Lady Min interfering in Bang won's and Boon Yi's relationship, since Bang won and Boon Yi have an understanding that surpasses mere love between a man and a woman, and a history between them. I know Lady Min is his wife, and she's Boon Yi's boss, but she's gotten more dictatorial of late.... and Bang won doesn't need Lady Min's advice on how to treat Boon yi. I fear LM is using this as an excuse to stay relevant, even going behind Bang won's back to issue instructions to BY. smh.

Someone commented about how JDJ's nature changed and became less caring towards Boon-yi. To be honest, I never saw JDJ as caring. Even when he helped BY out by asking her to cultivate the wasteland, it was done quite enigmatically, as if he wanted to show how clever he was. he didn't strike me as being particularly caring about the general public either...remember the first episode, where he did not hesitate to steal the rice ball from the poor farmer? He knows that the people were starving, yet he did not mind stealing from them.

I think JDJ is very analytical, this is all just a big puzzle for him to solve and implement his grand vision, he doesn't seem to be as concerned with the life of commoners. He wanted to avoid blood shed but that was also about public opinion.

I only know that I kind of giggled when BangGan barged into the room in his fur coat and I think there was a whole rabbit splayed out on the bottom right of his coat. And then we suddenly cut to him in red official robes. Hurr...
I also thought it was uncharacteristically stupid that BangWon knew he was being set up but still didn't burn the darn letter when there were 8432056 candles surrounding him. That's the second time in his life he's been set up with a fake letter! And then he follows Lee SinJeok and ChoYong towards the front door. Obviously it makes sense that the police would have to catch him in the act for the set up to work so they'd be coming soon. Why'd it not cross his mind to have the two climb the back wall while the sits there pretending to read and be caught surprised when they came? BangWon is not one to avoid responsibilities and faults but he's not one above sneaking around to save his hide or serve his purposes. That was so un-BangWon-like.

Which is, I think, the only thing he can do. Everything is so unstable at the moment. The first half of this episode was slow tho. And I know even without Boon Yi's pledge, Sambong & Yeon Hee had decided to move BY and her people to Bonchon. So, in the end Yeon Hee successfully removed BY from Lee Bang Won's side. Cunning.
My heart breaks watching Bang Won & Boon Yi's convo. It feels like it was their last convo. Aaaaghhh.. Yoo Ah In why so good?

i'm 99.9% certain that boonyi is going to die before the show is over. her death would serve as the thing that finally pushes bangwon over the edge to being virtually completely callous and ruthless, and she wasn't a character in "tree with deep roots" (she was not female leader of Banchon since that woman talked with northern accent and moohyul talked down to her and she talked respecfully to him, while in sfd moohyul always talks to boonyi respectfully)

Ach, this episode! I am Team Bangwon too! Most especially after this episode. JDJ and YH truly crossed the line with this one. Wow at JDJ slowly becoming like all those people that they've put away for being too engrossed with their power and abusing them for their benefit. Sam Bong is just being a hypocrite now. Checks and balance? Keeps all the power to himself. A new country for the people? Stomps all over commoners. "Nothing I could do for your people." Boon Yi threatens him and he gives them Banchon. Buddhism needs to be fixed because people just pray to him instead of doing something? He sits down waiting for "heaven's will". Ugh this is so frustrating. Someone needs to die in the next episode or two.
Boon Yi and her members will be the bustling Banchon we saw in Tree! \o/ That kind of explains why [SPOILER] Banchon is affiliated with Milbon. I love how things are starting to connect to each other as we cross the transition from Dragons to Tree. Lee Shin Jeok is also going over to the dark side.

I very much doubt he is Moomyung, there have been no indications of him being sneaky thus far. (his long absences were justified as him going away to do work for Sambong, and also the actor was in a wheelchair for a bit so that's self explanatory why he has had less scenes until now) In TWDR he is in Milbon, which has fairly different ideals to what Moomyung is on about. (Milbon is essentially an representation of Sambong's original ideals, and then some)

The women in this show are awesome, no matter which camp/sides they are. There's no passive women crying, being damsel in distress.
Da-Kyung - she totally impressed me when she told Bang Won that if having 100 concubines will help him, then so be it. It might seem a bit cold but I think she realized that she made a choice to married Bang Won and stayed with him. If he loose, then she and her family will die as well. So rather than sit around, she is actively helping him to secure power. I don't necessarily agree with her high-handed way of asking Boon Yi to do things without informing Bang Won first. But I do admire her persistence and her cojones in doing what needs to be done. They say behind a great man, there's a great woman. Maybe Bang Won is ruthless but with a ruthless Queen as well, that's a damn ruthless combo.
Yeon-hee: I hate her for saying all those things to Boon Yi about just being a subject but I'm impressed how she took over Hwasadan. And here's another lady that's all about the cause. She didn't seem to even consider what it means for Bang Ji to stay by Jung Do Jeon's side. I do think she cares for him but I think she cares more about the cause. Why is she so loyal to Jung Do Jeon's cause?
Boon-Yi: this episode made me clapped for her. Now this is what a leader does! she thinks about the wellbeing of her people and try her best to give them the best options. She could have just taken the land Jung Do Jeon offered and forget about everyone else. She didn't. Well done girl, well done! And she doesn't let her personal feelings toward Bang Won prevent her for doing what's best for her people. Now is this what I call a heroine!

I totally agree with this. The women in this drama are absolutely amazing, even if they do come across as ruthless and garner a bit of hate because of it.
I really want to know more about Yeonhee tbh? HOW did she end up at Hwasadan in the first place? It seemed that Choyoung trusted/liked her enough to make her 2nd in command before Choyoung was ousted as a Moomyung member. I really want to know how that relationship dynamic came about tbh.
According to TWDR, Yeonhee was JDJ's "woman", so many viewers have assumed that they get married later, and Yeonhee's dedication to the cause is based on:
1. her ideal world, where she is not a weak person that gets trampled on.
2. potential romantic attachment to JDJ, so naturally she will be an advocate for his cause.
But yeah, you're right in that Yeonhee's motivations aren't as clear cut as they could be at the moment. I really hope that the writers flesh her out a bit more.

This is purely my opinion but YeonHee seems completely straightforward to me. She was raped, got lost and scared and found her own power and purpose through Jung DoJeon('s cause). In Hwasadan, she was no more than a powerless (skillful but ultimately powerless) pawn. When she became empowered and furthermore overcame her rapist, she decided she didn't want to be even a bit powerless/spineless/vulnerable anymore. However, she isn't one to have huge great ideals and doesn't really think much about the world and I feel like she's one of those people who are baby ducks who follow whatever they first follow to the end. All she knows and follows is therefore the person who saved her (from her misery, herself) and she's decided that's her lifelong purpose. So now she has both purpose and self-esteem (through self-empowerment) and she's decided that's her road, whatever Jung DoJeon may be. She's the no-strong-background version of BangWon - fiercely loyal to her (and Jung DoJeon's) cause and ruthless if need be (but she's always tempered by Jung DoJeon that's why that harsh side never gets seen by others).

I know that the writers team for this is also the same one who wrote Trees With Deep Roots. Some ppl commented about Queen SeonDeok as well?
I have to say that they've really improved their writing. I love Quuen Seon Deok (I love Uhm Force and MilShil hahaha) but in the middle it lost my interest.
We are now episode 40 (omg!) and this show still have that awesome tension.
Please please keep it up and deliver on an awesome ending, writers-nim!

Wow, there's so much hate on JDJ as the SFD character here.
Here is some part of what Homura wrote about the real JDJ in korean history:
"During his 7 years as a prime minister (1392~1398), Jung Do-Jeon achieved so many things in all areas : Managing the state affairs, making Constitutional laws, writing history books, designing and building the new palace in Hanyang (Seoul), composing formal court music, stabilizing the national defense, creating various battle formations for military training, diplomacy, etc.
The genius had lived a fierce life after Joseon was founded. I can’t believe how he did all those things for such a short period of time. Maybe, in the history of Korea, no one can equal him except for King Sejong the Great, the son of Yi Bang-Won and Lady Min"
I'm team Bang-won all the way, but after reading the background history of SFD episode 39-40 (written by Homura), I kinda wish to see different depiction of JDJ by SFD team. I mean, I didn't want to hate him as character because this show gives me wrong impression of the real JDJ.
Anyway, I have been trying to comprehend the reasons (if my guess is right) of why Bang-ji chose to side with JDJ without going through an internal conflict like anyone else. Even MH has his own moment too (although it wasn't really shown well). Does he really believe by protecting JDJ he can protect others' dreams like he said in previous episodes? Does a sword-man/bodyguard just blindly follow the order from his master like Young-gyu tells MH? If so, I'm disappointed. but, next week he'll meet his mom. I wonder if that event will change him. I'd like to see him teams up with BY and BW.

I think he stayed with Jung Do Jeon because of Yeon hee. You're right it's a bit strange that he didn't seem to be more conflicted. But I guess from his point of view, he goes where his friends/family goes (Yeon Hee and Boon Yi). I do wonder if he has to make a choice between Yeon Hee and Boon Yi, which one would he choose?

Lol, he was never for the cause in the first place. He thinks it's all for shits and that the real power lies in raw military/physical strength. He only followed his two ladies to Jung DoJeon because they decided that they wanted to follow him. His loyalty is not to Jeong DoJeon or BangWon or even to Lee SeongGye but solely to his two ladies (and mom?).
I predict he'll get lost (as in both emotionally and physically) when both ladies clearly split up and choose either side after waffling for a period of time because that's really his specially apart from swordsmanship. BangJi thinks a lot and gets scared a lot and doesn't really decide or do much independently.

(Also to add, he was jaded regarding Jung DoJeon's cause since the early episodes although he did go off to kill someone because of Jung DoJeon even though Jung DoJeon didn't know him back then. But even after he killed, nothing changed and that's why he's so jaded. I don't think he cares for the cause. He just wants to live in peace with his love and his sister and mom, why is that so hard?!)

Bang Ji would choose Boon Yi but under the circumstance that Boon Yi dies (and she will), Bang Ji would choose Yeon Hee, because she is the only one left he cares about.
About Boon Yi's death, which everyone has been dreading. I feel like her death would lead to:
1. Bang Won losing his shit (we all know how much of an influence she is to him and losing her would mean losing the best person on his team).
2. the people gaining their land. For all her hard work and the sacrifice she made, this was her reward. I think it's befitting, don't you think?

I think we all need to REALLY not hate JDJ as a historical character. We just need to understand that who we are watching here, in SFD, is a fictional JDJ. As far as SFD is concern, JDJ is worth hating indeed.

Being a genius who accomplishes great things doesn't mean you are morally perfect or can't make bad decisions. I think JDJ's great fault is taking complete control of everything for himself and supporting the younger son by the 2nd wife as crown prince.

And who the heck is morally perfect here? Everyone has faults. You see what you want to see. There is nothing wrong with Sambong supporting his friend with his choice. It's easy to blame him and not Lee Seong-gye who made the choice to crown his youngest son out of love and devotion for his 2nd wife.

Yeon Hee: Am disliking her. When she told Boon Yi, "we have to be loyal to the king and behave as subjects to the king," I thought, "So will you, Yeon-hee-ssi, become loyal to Bang Won if he suddenly becomes king?" She likes her power but her faithfulness is to one person: JDJ...so she will toss aside all her old friends for that one person.
Boon Yi: I so wish she had looked at that letter or given it to Bang Won. Her naivete shows she is completely out of her league. Hopefully she will fully side with Bang Won now that she sees how the other side works, that JDJ cannot be trusted. At the very least, she will now understand how deceitful all power (in anyone's hands) can be. Hopefully she and her brother will not be separated. Maybe she will talk some sense into him.
JDJ: Seriously? We're seeing how arrogant, self-deceived, and self-righteous revolutionists can be! His expedience is so passionless unlike Bang Won who at least cries at the thought of murdering his enemy Po Eun.
Moo Hyul: You sweetie! This is how the world works. Alas.

What Boon-yi did was a stab it the heart. That is why you cannot give your heart 100% to a woman. You must hold back so that you can discard them like used tools that have outlived their uses. She was that naive to do that to Ban-won and JDJ. Luckily for her, those two were not me, as I would have disposed of her for betrayal.
Communist JDJ was a hypocrite; he just wanted a puppet king with himself as the dictator and he was willing to back an undeserving crown prince in exchanged for military power, although borrowed. As history will show people like him with borrowed powers would not last long.
As Mao Tse-tung said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" and only Bon-won has this so silly JDJ is on borrowed time too.

i dont really care about history in this drama.....if the writer are faithful (with the history)SFD would be more like JDJ. I can see that the writers are giving viewers another point of view of the notorious Lee Bang Won. To make Bang Won become a hero in this drama then there should be villain (s)..first it was LIG then HIB..and now JDJ. It will be difficult to accept that JDJ,lately, is portrayed as ungrateful,power hungry human being.But, as a song says, that’s the way its gotta be.... and i like it! the tension,the emotion that we experience...like whoaa....
plus, i found it soooo..hard not to side with Bang Won when Yoo Ah In is him

I am always on team BW all the way... I dont like the fact that JDJ had all the power and show to people how rightful a person he was.. He could be if he was a lil bit more compassionate to his followers... JDJ and BW's ideology are different and somehow i understand why in the end the one who got the better ends was BW... I had once discussed with a friend, she didnt watch the drama but we shared the same belief that Gwanghae in Hwajung was a good king, though his ways are the unpopular ones... When i told her that BW was a tyrant, she just told me one thing, BW must have done that because he knew that was the right thing to do and in the end, he paved the way well for Sejong... Just like Injo, even when he was not a good king, when he realised that, at least he knew could pave a way for Hyojong to rule well... And it's clear now, that BW was very clear and knew what he wanted to get and do... So i have no doubt until the end BW will do what he thinks is right to do... JDJ on the other hand, keep making me question him as PM... When he's the leader of the organisation, he wasnt being that obvious being power-maniac, but now since poeun was gone, no one to keep him in check, guess he just let loose his inner self... And i am sad to say, what happened in SFD, i can see it now by myself where i am now... Huhu

it's funny... I watch the episode, read the recaps/comments and I'm still far from sympathizing with bang-won. I really appreciate yoo ah in's acting because there are moments when he almost get me, but then BW says something and I'm just naaah.... I know the times were different, but I feel like JDJ's reasons to act in some ways make more sense to me than BW's? I don't know... maybe it's just my love for kim myung min.
at this point, I only really care about boon yi, bang ji and moon hyul. I love when they're together and talking about the power war going on, extremely confused about everything, but trying to survive. they're consistent with their goals, beliefs since day 1. maybe "bless the ignorance"?!
