Put your hands up for Pied Piper
by javabeans
What I’m getting from these teaser clips of tvN’s police-negotiator drama Pied Piper is mostly that this thriller hinges upon the force and charisma of Shin Ha-kyun, who plays the skilled lead negotiator of the unit that handles volatile, high-risk situations like hostage crises and terrorist threats. Which is fine by me, since you don’t cast Shin Ha-kyun and expect him to play second fiddle; he’s certainly capable of carrying a show all on his own.
Hopefully he’ll be backed up by solid directing and writing as well, though, with the Liar Game team at the helm. The teasers (the first two clips are mostly the same, with one just being the slightly longer version) feel rather calm and even-keel given the high-stakes plot, as the police team engages in a tense stand-off against terrorists armed with bombs. But I suppose the calmness is reflective of Shin Ha-kyun’s role as the cool and in-charge talker who remains in control of even the most dangerous situations.
In the teaser, he narrates, “Anger, crime, hostage situations, robbery, terrorism. There’s no deal I can’t resolve. There, shall we begin our conversation now?” He certainly doesn’t look very worried about being able to take care of the crisis (…although doesn’t his smugness kind of make you want him to fail more? Not just me, is it?). The third video clip is a short interview with Shin about his character, where he laughs that he can’t recall having successfully negotiated a situation in his own life, then talks about the art of negotiation as hinging on listening and communication.
Pied Piper also stars Yoo Joon-sang playing a news anchor and Jo Yoon-hee as a fellow member of the police negotiation squad. The drama is set to premiere on March 7, following current Monday-Tuesday drama Cheese in the Trap.

Shin Ha-kyun is always a joy to watch. I didn't watch Liar Game but Time Between Dog and Wolf was pretty good. I hope this will be as good.

It is a relief to see Shin Ha Kyun back in a serious drama. He is awesome in the right context. In romantic comedies, he comes across as phony and precious (mannered).
I hope that the Liar Game team can reproduce the magic!

I love shin ha kyun in any genre. I was surprised to like him in Rom com cause I wouldn't have peg him for rom com. Back to serious for him and I can totally see him in this role. I will probably wait to see it in a marathon. It looks intense.

Like you said - too smug. Everyone likes confident, wise ass heroes ... but here - way too smug. Makes me want to take him down a peg or two.
Fingers crossed though. Its just a teaser. The real stuff could be much better

Sometimes protagonists like those make for the best dramas - I spent the entire first episode of Punch constantly wanting to, well, punch Kim Rae-won in the face, but it was still one of the great dramas of 2015.
And you're right about the teaser not being the ultimate key to the drama - Cheese in the Trap seriously worried me because its early teasers looked like typical romcom fluff, but every doubt was dispelled once the show actually started.

I'm still stuck on episode 7 of punch. I don't know why. The acting is A+, so is the writing. Is it just bec its too heavy ? Or I just want Jung-Hwan to pick one side and stick to it. Its like in the beginning of episode he is on team A and by the end of the episode he has shifted to Team B. Does it continue like this ? Does he actually do something for the right reasons?

Lmao, that's exactly where I'm stuck in the drama as well. I think it might be too heavy. I tend to have a hard time with shows with lots of politics; wish there was something else to break it up a bit and maybe give me a break. I don't need it to be dummed down but just one thing that wasn't Tension City haha.

Hahaha, I can totally see Shin Ha Kyun as an over-confident type only using his words to sway some criminals. I'm here for this.

I absolutely ADORED Liar Game so I'm here just for the writing team.
I haven't seen any of these actors in anything else but judging by the general reception, I shouldn't worry about that at all. I'll definitely keep my eye out for this (while waiting for Liar Game 2 ><)

My love for Shin Ha Kyun has always been unhealthy. I watched the trailer and almost teared up just seeing his face.
I'm on a drama hiatus.....can I successfully avoid this? :(
