Name That Drama: Cheating husbands and spoiled chaebols

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Movie edition, part one

Hi, about five or six years ago, I was on a family vacation to Seoul. While movie surfing on the plane, curiosity got the better of me and I watched this movie, but forgot the title.

This is what I remember: A girl and a boy grow up together who are not siblings. I didn’t see any parents. When they are in their late teens, the boy discovers that he has a terminal illness. He hides the fact from the girl and still tries to continue taking care of her, like a good oppa. He has to take his medicine secretly in his room or else he’ll collapse from the pain.

Anyway, it seems like he was actually going to confess his feelings to her, until he got the news that his life would end soon due to the cancer. There’s a memorable scene where they both prepare and eat dinner at a small table, but instead of talking to each other, they message each other over the dinner table instead. The whole movie is quite subdued and bathed in dull colors, the girl and the boy are quiet but intense. I think the girl or someone later finds the pills and realizes the truth. Any idea what the ending was? Or for that matter, the title?

  2. Movie edition, part two

Two married couples get caught up in a tangled web when one spouse from each marriage (one husband, one wife) get into a car accident. I think the man in the car died while the woman survived. Anyway, their respective spouses keep visiting the hospital day after day, walking up and down the thousands of stairs in the hospital, which reminded me of the moving staircases in Hogwarts. The wife of the deceased driver visits the husband of the woman involved in the car accident, but they just stare at each other. In one scene, he puts her in the bathroom because he has a visitor—but when he checks on her later, she is still standing in the same spot. There’s not much talking but plenty of worried looks and lots of wandering around the hospital day after day. I think the actor was Bae Yong-joon with glasses on.

  3. You didn’t go up there to fish

Hey guys! There’s a drama I’ve been trying to pick back up, but I don’t remember the title. It was broadcasted a few years ago. I remember that I was shocked (in a good way), because it was the first kdrama I’d seen depicting homosexuality. The story was about a celebrity couple, where the husband was a famous anchor trying to become a politician. The wife was a radio DJ/successful author. They married out of convenience, not love, in order to benefit each other’s careers.

If I remember correctly, the wife discovers that her husband is cheating on her with a male college student who used to tutor their rebellious son. At the same time, she starts to lust after their married neighbor, who is a high ranking soldier. I stopped watching because of a huge drama that came out around the same time. Thank you to anyone who can help me.

  4. Someone gets shot, or not

This is a drama I’d really like to remember. I watched it around 2006-2008, and my sister and I were obsessed with it. There was this girl, who ended up being a bodyguard to a spoiled rich kid. There was another bodyguard who worked with her, and though they would always bicker a lot, they eventually fell in love. The spoiled rich kid also fell in love with her, I think. And I also think someone got shot in the finale? Anyway, I’d really like to know the name of this drama. Thanks!

  5. Concubines and trees: recipe for disaster

I don’t remember much about this drama besides the fact that it was a super pretty historical drama. The main character was a girl who might’ve been a concubine to the king or his third wife—I think it’s the latter because I remember seeing a first and second wife, but I might be confusing it with something else I watched.

I saw this about eight years ago and the one scene I remember is from the last episode (I think), where the girl commits suicide by hanging herself from a tree. There’s a voiceover of her suicide letter to the king as this scene is happening. The screen changes to something really pretty afterward with cherry blossoms or some other flower petals, and there are characters written on the screen. Thanks for the help!

  6. There can be only one chaebol

This may not be a very clear description, but I’m trying to remember the name of a drama where the guy and girl are working together somewhere. Maybe in a restaurant or food court? The guy is from a wealthy family and is used to getting lots of attention because of it, but he doesn’t realize that the girl is also wealthy. She’s unimpressed by his money and he’s drawn to her, maybe because of how unimpressed she is?

  7. Joint custody of my heart

I want to say I saw this drama between 1998 and 2008, which isn’t much help for narrowing it down. But this is what I remember:

A young and single perky mother meets a nice man, but the father of her child (and possibly her ex-husband) comes from a rich family. His family wants him to take the child from her so that they can raise him instead. The father is torn, because I think he still had feelings for her. Or, he just didn’t want to hurt her. Thanks!

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

Hi. Number 6 sounds like "High Society" from earlier this year. http://asianwiki.com/High_Society

I don't think it's High society, the main actor of the primary love story is not a chaebol and in the secondary love story, the girl is not a chaebol.

She is wow for number three for sure. I think the lead female was a top actress, and after a dry spell she was doing different work to raise her profile and I think she was doing radio talk show work for a little bit.
The cast for that show is really solid and it's interesting to see who is playing what. For instance the gay husband's actor is currently playing the flashy lawyer in Remember and the gay lover is currently the second lead in One More Happy Ending. Meanwhile the hunky army guy next door had previously played the head reaper in Arang and the magistrate. He went on to play the secretary in Blade Man. And of course the lead actress went on to be in Legendary Witches.

Number 2 is April Snow--I think. If it's not, then April Snow is very similar to the movie you're looking for. I watched it on DF a while back--not sure it's still there though. I found it a bit slow paced but perhaps that's what it was going for.

No.6. maybe could be ''Shining Inheritance", the main lead wasn't a chaebol or anything, but she used to have money before and then afterwards she was given a lot by the grandmother of the main guy.
They were also both working in a restaurant and I remember that she was very unimpressed with the main lead in general :D

'Shining Inheritance' all the way. That's what I thought as well when I read the description.

It also makes me want to re-watch that drama. Puppy's hair was ridiculous.

I also vote for shining inheritance for #6. The main girl was poor, but the second lead was a rich girl. Every thing else fits.

no 3. She is Wow. it's not exactly about homosexuality eventhough at first few episodes we (viewers) are led to believe / think it is. actually the lead guy doesn't love the other guy as a man. he just feels guilty because he killed his parent in an accident. btw it's a crazy drama. hahaha... the only normal people there is the 'so called' rebellious son, i think.

I think no 5 is the moon that embraces the sun. Its the first wife who committed suicide.

The first wife and the 2nd wife that you saw were the mothers of Jung Il Woo and Kim Soo hyun's characters.
