Choi Kang-hee up for tvN mystery romance with Eric
by girlfriday
One potential pairing went out the window for tvN’s new mistaken identity drama Oh Hae-young Again, because Kim Ah-joong (Punch) turned down the offer to star in the series shortly following the news that Eric (Discovery of Romance) was being courted to play the leading man. Now an offer is out to Choi Kang-hee (Dazzling Temptation) to headline the drama, about two women who share a name and want nothing more than to get away from each other.
The new tvN Monday-Tuesday series comes from the PD of Marriage Not Dating and Superdaddy Yeol and the writer of I Live in Cheongdamdong and Old Miss Diaries. It’s about two women named Oh Hae-young, who happen to both work in the catering business. Their lives start to get tangled up because of the name mixup, and there’s a supernatural element in the leading man, who (for some strange reason) has the ability to see into the future.
The drama is a mystery romance about the three of them trying to disentangle their lives from one another. I guess moving out of town is out of the question? I don’t know that an Eric/Choi Kang-hee pairing is at the top of my list, but they are both really quirky people and might have a fun, offbeat chemistry.
I’ve warmed to Choi Kang-hee after Heart to Heart, her tvN drama with Chun Jung-myung, in which she played a wallflower who broke through her shell and overcame the trauma that had turned her into a hermit. She was warm and endearing in that, and played up the character’s eccentric charm in a way that really fit. I’m not watching her current melodrama Dazzling Temptation (because, why) but if she follows it up by romancing Eric, I could get onboard with that.
Oh Hae-young Again follows Pied Piper in May.

Isn't she too old for an Eric? I mean, I know she's solid actress and won so many acting awards. But I want Eric romancing someone a bit younger than him. Why can't even once Eric be paired with a hot lady? Especially this will be in TvN where we already imagine the kissy kissy here and there. From what I saw, he always paired with cute tiny girl lol.

I dont know if it was your intention but the cillent cale off as really sexist. Eric isn't a kid himself (he was born in 79 whereas Choi was born in 77). If we follow your logic actress past 30s shouldn't be casted as leads. I call this bullshit.

Were we watching the same show?
It was painful to watch - squicky with a cringe.
The chemistry was slightly less forced with Chansung.
Eric is someone that oozes chemistry, but casting her with Eric would be a waste of his talent. I will not watch if she's cast for this.

I love Joo Won but I feel that he never really have chemistry with any of her female leads - so I wouldnt call this Choi Kang Hee`s fault - and I am not even a fan of her, I am being objective after watching several of his dramas.
Level 7 Civil Servant was not a good show but I am tired of people bashing on her - it is not her fault the rest of the male leads are too young (and the directing and writing are horrible!)

Joo Won did have good chemistry with Eugene in Baker King despite the age difference, and I enjoyed his chemistry with UEE in Ojakgyo Brothers. No, scratch that. I was practically squealing for them to get together in real life.

Admittedly, Joo Won was a large part of the reason why there was no chemistry. I've seen him in (many) other dramas and he CAN really lose himself in a role, just not a romantic role.
Joo Won has great chemistry with his male counterparts....but I have yet to see any kind of PASSIONATE or romantic chemistry with his female co-stars. So far it's all seemed like noona/donsaeng or chingu.

I'm sorry. Doesn't has any intention to be rude. I like Choi Kang Hee in Glomorious Temptation. I just said I hope someone a bit younger than him to be his partner. And of course I know Eric is an adult. Ahjusshi age. That was just my opinion though. Don't need to be angry.

I have the opposite problem; I love Eric to bits (Ahjussi at 37? Don't worry, you'll change your mind in a few years :-p ), but Choi Kang Hee is the main reason why I am struggling through Dazzling Temptation. Her character is bland, and her voice irritates me. Unless she is playing a villain, or at least someone with a spine, this is going to be quite a dilemma.
Age itself is not an issue for me; I just want to see actors creating believable romance, and that does not depend on the number in their IDs, but their skill and the quality of the writing. I always keep an open mind :)

I like Eric. Very much. I know he's an idol-actor. But I became his fan not because he was my idol. I started to like him after I watched Que Sera Sera and it was after reading recaps from Dramabeans. Since then, without I relaize it, I watched almost all of his dramas except the historical one. I think he has capability to carry the story and interpret his characters very well. And I don't mind about age different in this case. I thought Choi Kang Hee is years apart from him that's why I wrote such previous comments. I quite like her in Dazzling Temptation. But if this drama really needs strong and mature female lead, I think I prefer Kim Hee Sun. She was really good in Angry Mom. But still I prefer Eric with early 30s co-stars.
The synopsis of this drama seems interesting but I hope he can get another drama offered which is more male centric. IMO.

But, you see, if you don't object to the pairing *after* knowing that they are the same age, why would you do it when you thought she was older? Either you see them together, or you don't, regardless of numbers.
If you prefer Kim Hee Sun, that's a different story altogether, although your condition "if the drama really needs it" suggests that you are not particularly keen on mature (let me go sob in a corner :-p) female leads in general.
I think I would be more concerned about a young inexperienced actress having to romance an "ahjussi", because she might have a hard time; when both are experienced actors, they can just be professional about it, and make it believable. On the other hand, between early and mid-to-late thirties, frankly I see very little difference. But all this is probably because you haven't turned the corner yourself; talk to me in ten to fifteen years :-p

I like her. I think this is a pairing that will work. In wonder why Kim Ah-joong dropped out, though. From the wording of this article, it seems that she doesn't want to act with Eruc. Since I didn't watch Discovery of Romance and I could barely tolerate the mess that was Spy Myung wol, I can't say if he is truly a good actor or not.

Wow, how can you conclude that she doesn't want to act with Eric just because she rejected this drama offer? In some news, I read that she has new movie called The King in the very short time. I guess she's preparing for that project.
And Choi Kang Hee also still has Glomorius Temptation for 50 episodes. It will be very tough for her to continue directly for a new drama.

Kim Ah Joong was announced as a cast on The King movie with Jo In Sung and Jung Woo Sung on last January. So, it's not like she rejected the offer because of Eric.
I notice, TvN always makes buzz with their castings news. Even though they knew the actors already rejected the offers. It just strategy for getting people attention to the drama like they did in Cheese In Traps, Reply 1998 and so on. The more controversies, the better.
And I don't think Choi Kang Hee could make it for this series either since she's still working on her drama till end of March while Oh Hye Young supposed to be aired on early May means it will be too tight and tiring for her.
Like I said before I prefer Kim Hee Sun or Kim Sun Ah for this kinda role.

It might be taken that way but in some K-news, it says Kim Ah Joong turned down the role because of schedule clash. From Deandra's comment below, it's because of her new movie which she already confirmed in January even before Eric's casting news come out. It seems tvN likes to play the casting game just like Deandra said :)

CKH is very talented, but, apparently, age IS a problem. Because everyone has a problem w/a woman in her 30's playing a love interest w/a man of her age, 1-2 years older/younger, or 10 yers her junior...
BUT, everyone LOOOOOOOVES IU (22) w/Lee JunKi (33) despite of the 11 years difference!!
Because patriarchy (that some women believe deeeeep in their minds) and that old macho mentality in which a man with a much younger woman is very well seen, but God save us from the opposite!!!

But saying the comment was based on (unexamined) 'deep patriarchy' implies that the person is less inquisitive, thoughtful or self aware than yourself. Maybe it's not deeeeep patriarchy, but simply their well thought-out preferences. And those preferences might actually have a foundation of wisdom.
Witness what happens to women married to younger men, once those women start to go through menopause and begin to show a greater physical age disparity than their male partners. Is it unfortunate? Maybe. Is it reality? Yes. Is avoidable? Both history and biology say no.
That said, would a 2 year age gap be likely to create problems? No.

Well, looking around at my high-school and college friends, rather than the pool of perfect-gene, pampered K-drama males, my general perception is that men age faster than women; women also have the longer life expectancy where I am from. Most younger men would eventually catch up with their partners. It is more to do with fertility than merely appearance, as biology documentaries inform us.
However, biology is not enough to explain it. Human beings are complex, love as we experience it is a cultural construction, and relationships are not only about reproduction (witness gay couples and those who cannot have children for whatever reason). If an age gap can cause a relationship to fail, I think it might have more to do with both members of the couple being at a different stage in their lives, regardless of menopause, balding heads and beer bellies (clubbing vs. quiet movie nights, profesional peaks vs retirement, for example), and that can work both ways.
Anyway, the fact that men go for younger women has a biological explanation; the fact that younger women go for older men does not. The explanation given is usually that it is about security and the potential to provide for offspring, and that is where patriarchy comes in. History proves your point, precisely because historically women have been the caretakers, and men have been the providers. But history evolves.
Gosh, I am sounding like a feminist here :) . I am just uncomfortable with the kind of arguments that validate the idea that women have to be young as well as pretty to deserve love, men not necessarily. We have enough of that coming from K-dramas already (where incidentally, there is never a female lead character older than 39, because 40 would make the universe implode). Let's not say that because it happens, we should deal with it, or that it is a matter of wisdom.

Actually age is NOT a problem, it is when actress looks BEYOND her age or her co-star looks younger.
In Madame Antoine Han Ye Seul is younger than Sung Joon (with 8 year) but no one complains....

Are you throwing shade at other actresses who've had plastic surgery by saying Choi Kang Hee, another actress who's had plastic surgery, has a normal face?
I'd much rather see Lee Bo Young, Kim Sa-rang, Gong Hyo-jin, Kim So-yeon, Kim Hee-sun etc. Heck, I'd even take Park Ha-sun over Choi Kang Hee, and I don't think Park Ha-sun is a good actress.
I just think Choi Kang Hee is worse, and I haven't managed to finish one drama she's been in except Protect The Boss. And that was because I found everything else enjoyable, but not her. She's even the weakest link in her latest drama with bland acting. I want to watch a drama with Eric since I think he's pretty decent, but I don't want to be forced to skip it due to her inclusion.

I also was turned off from Mr. Baek for the same reason. Prime Minister and I was also a tough sell, but I got through that one no problem. There were chemistry issues, though.

I think this pair might be work. She worked with several younger actors like Joo Won and Jae Joong and still have at least better chemistry. And note: both actors are years apart from her. She's a solid actress with several awards under her belts. How can people judge her can't act? sigghhh... You better watch her works before commenting. I know some people in here just prefer for Eric getting 'hot' lady for him, like someone said in previous comments.
I have no doubt Eric will have good chemistry with her. I watched him in some of his works and the guy can have very good chemistry even the script was messy and internal problem of production occured (with Han Ye Seul in Spy Myung Wol). And I enjoyed watching his scenes with Kim Seul Gi who has so many years apart from him. Eric can't act? I even think he's better actor than original actors. Discovery of Romance proved that he can act even without dialoques.
Again, it's the matter of story telling and directing.

You guys are so ridiculous. What's with the debates about age? TvN always careful about the actors that they will cast. They don't cast just because of pretty face or strong fandom. So, if they offer the script to Choi Kang Hee, Eric or whoever she/he is, means they are the perfect choice to play the roles.

For me it wasn't about age, I just don't think they would suit each other to play a romanic pairing. For some reason Choi Kang Hee reminds me of Solbi (in looks and in talent)...whom I also categorize in the "bland" category. IN general CKH is not LEAD actress material.

I dislike Choi Kang Hee so I'll pray she doesn't accept this role. Definitely a downgrade from Kim Ah-joong in my eyes. I hope Lee Bo Young returns to dramaland soon. I wouldn't mind seeing her in this drama.

I don't want them to pair up together. And its not because of age or whatever. I've seen Choi Kang Hee and I've found her awkward.
So as an Eric fan I want him to be paired with someone else.

I hope Choi Kang Hee decline this. I wanna see eric paired with another actress. Choi Kang Hee's acting never can't convince me in romantic comedy. She seems awkward in every romantic scenes while Eric is in the opposite one. Eric seems so comfortable to the skinship related scenes lol. I want him paired with someone who doesn't feel shy to have intimate scenes like Jung Yumi or Yoon Eun hye. I know both actress is impossible, so I hope they can find another actress.

I've seen a few of Choi Kang Hee's recent works and I feel like there is always something missing with her roles. Due to this, I've never been able to fully watch or finish watching any of her dramas. I agree with some other comments saying that she seems 'awkward' onscreen, although it is probably how she acts. I don't think her acting is quirky at all.
I don't think age is the problem, it's the acting that needs to make it believable. As said in another comment, Lee Bo Young in 'I Can Hear Your Voice' did a fantastic job!
