Cheese in the Trap: Episode 10

So cute today. I mean, this show is always cute (with a side of crazies), but this episode had some really sweet character beats that made me giddy. It also had some triumphant moments for our heroine, who confronts her tormenters in a major way and doesn’t hold back or silently endure like she’s so used to doing. Grab some popcorn, because things are about to get entertainingly ugly.

Note: There’s a good chance that Cheese in the Trap will be pre-empted next week for the New Year holiday (Monday and Tuesday, February 8-9). It hasn’t been confirmed, but there’s talk of tvN possibly airing movies instead, so just a warning to be emotionally prepared for a week with no Cheese! Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out… *whimper*

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Seol keeps her distance from Jung, though she finds herself upset that he’s ignoring her too. But then she finds him waiting in the stairwell with a can of coffee, wanting to talk. When she turns it down, he just wraps his arms around her in a backhug and lingers there for a while, until he quietly slips the coffee in her pocket and walks away.

After class, Seol and Bora are shocked when Eun-taek says no to lunch with them, because they’ve never seen him not hungry. Sure enough, he’s chowing down on a burger without them… because he’s having lunch with Jung instead.

Jung says that once midterms are over, he’ll be at school even less frequently than before, and asks Eun-taek to keep an eye on Seol and let him know if anything happens. He admits that Seol doesn’t share that stuff with him, and he’s worried. I get the sentiment, but I dunno, shouldn’t you ask her?

Eun-taek agrees and says he’d wondered about whether or not to show Jung the video they took of Stalker Boy Young-gon harassing her the other day. Eun-taek shares the video and says that Young-gon was so bad last year that this time Seol wanted to collect evidence to turn over to the police, though he’s skeptical that it’ll do anything.

Jung asks for a copy of that and any future videos they get of Young-gon, saying that he’ll help find a solution. Um. Can we not give Jung fuel to do another scary thing he won’t be able to explain later?

When Jung heads back to campus, he sees Copycat Min-soo walking ahead of him, looking exactly like Seol from behind with her lion charm just openly dangling from her bag. She’s even muttering to herself like a crazy person, that she’s not the one who copied Seol, and that Seol was so mean not to accept her apology.

Jung clearly knows it’s Min-soo but runs up to her and slings an arm around her, feigning surprise when he sees that it’s not Seol. He points out the lion charm and calls it cute, and asks if she and her boyfriend each have one. Ohhh, I see what you’re doing there.

He says that their classmates have mentioned that she has a boyfriend, and she weakly replies that she does. Jung suddenly turns cold and reaches over to caress a lock of her hair as he says, “No matter how much you impersonate and struggle to try, you can’t become the same. Haven’t you already realized it too?” She stammers as she asks what he means, but he just says she’s not so dumb that she doesn’t understand, and walks away. Okay, he’s scary when he does that.

Min-soo is shocked at first and wonders if this is the same Jung sunbae she knows. But then she flashes back to him suggesting that she look at those past presentations for their group project, and wonders now if he set her up on purpose. Oh he definitely did. But then she makes the leap that this is all Seol’s doing, and that she’s even using her boyfriend to stick it to Min-soo. Great. Crazypants is now Angrypants.

At his internship, Jung’s supervisor praises the excellent job he did on the last presentation, and bestows a new project on him like it’s a special honor, when really he’s just foisting his own work onto the intern. Sigh, it’s all too familiar a routine for Jung, and he forces a smile.

Curiously, he gets a text from In-ha declaring that she’s dealing with Stalker Boy per their deal, and that he should anticipate the results. And then Seol’s little brother Joon says he’s visiting campus tomorrow and asks Jung to buy him lunch. That makes Jung think of Joon’s picture saved on Copycat Min-soo’s phone, and the wheels start turning…

The next day on campus, Min-soo stops in her tracks to see Seol sitting next to her dream boyfriend, all touchy and close. Of course, she has no idea that Seol is Joon’s sister, and sees their playful teasing as something else entirely.

Seol isn’t really keen on the idea of going to lunch with Jung, but Joon wants her to come because their friend Ah-young is coming too. Ah-young arrives with breakfast for the three of them, and Min-soo watches jealously as Seol wipes at Joon’s mouth with a napkin.

Min-soo quakes with rage and says aloud, “Hong Seol… everything I want, Hong Seol takes from me. What did I do that was so wrong?” Suddenly she remembers the lion charm and balls up her fist, squeezing it tightly. Uh-oh.

Min-soo purposefully bumps into Seol from behind and drops the lion to the ground, and then she stomps on it repeatedly before dragging it along underfoot. She finally kicks it back to Seol, who’s upset to see her lion so tattered up and abused. Bora gets angry and wants to confront Min-soo now, but Seol says they have a midterm to get through first.

Jung watches all of this quietly in the background, and then heads into class and sits near Min-soo. When the others mention that Min-soo has a boyfriend, Jung asks brightly if he’s good-looking, prompting everyone around them to ask to see a picture. Min-soo tries to brush past it, but Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young grabs her phone and shows them Joon’s picture. Jung pretends not to recognize that it’s Joon.

It puts Min-soo on edge, knowing that Seol is somehow connected to her faux boyfriend, and she ends up not being able to take her exam very well because she’s paranoid about how to keep from being found out. She walks out of class muttering that it’s all Seol’s fault that she failed her test. Of course it is.

Seol confronts Min-soo after class and says it’s one thing to have stolen her lion, but what does she mean to say by stomping on it? Min-soo only gets louder and more defiant, asking what’s so wrong about throwing away what’s hers.

They’ve drawn a crowd by now, and Stalker Boy’s girlfriend Da-young rolls her eyes and asks if they’re still going on about that damn doll. Just then, Joon and Ah-young arrive to have lunch with Jung, and Joon runs over to Seol to say hi. Muahaha. This is going to be good.

Da-young recognizes Joon from his picture and asks if this is Min-soo’s boyfriend, and immediately the thought that comes to Seol’s mind is, “Sunbae called Joon on purpose…?” Jung pretends not to know what everyone’s talking about when they say that Joon is the guy on Min-soo’s phone.

Meanwhile, Ah-young demands a straight answer from Joon about whether he has a girlfriend, clearly jealous. But Joon swears he has no such thing: “Who’s Man-soo?” Pfft, is it mean that I love this moment?

Joon announces in no uncertain terms that Ah-young is the girl he likes, and Da-young asks Min-soo to say something. Min-soo hangs her head and quietly ekes out that Joon just looks like her boyfriend is all, but Seol snatches the phone out of her hand and sees her brother’s face right there as her wallpaper.

Everyone gapes and Bora says her skin is crawling. Seol demands to know what Min-soo is doing with a photo of her brother, and asks how far she’s going to take this. Min-soo snatches her phone back and can feel everyone turning on her, and suddenly lashes out at Seol with an accusation that she knew all this and planned to publicly humiliate her.

Min-soo launches at her violently and grabs her collar, screaming like she’s the victim in all this and Seol is somehow relentlessly tormenting her. That’s enough to make Seol fight back and she pushes Min-soo to the ground, and in no time they’re wrestling each other on the floor. Most people try to stop them, though Stalker Boy is busy taking video of the fight, which Jung quietly steals and erases.

Joon finally manages to pull Seol off, and Min-soo is still playing the victim and acting like Seol won’t leave her alone. Seol screams right back that Min-soo is the one who needs to get away from her, not the other way around. When Seol lays out all the things she’s done, Min-soo finally caves and cries, “Everything I want, you have! Grades, friends, even a boyfriend!”

Seol: “I don’t know why you’re saying that, but grades, friends…” She pauses thinking of Jung but doesn’t mention the boyfriend part aloud, then continues, “There’s not a single thing I earned easily.” She says that Min-soo didn’t used to be like this, and asks why she changed.

Min-soo cries that she was nothing before and she’ll never go back to that. She flashes back to people in their department constantly asking who she is and not remembering her, like she was invisible. Seol asks, “Are you happier now? People will remember you as Liar Sohn Min-soo. Are you happier now?” Min-soo finally breaks down in sobs.

Afterwards, Seol asks Jung point-blank if he called Joon here, and he says he’s been patient and holding back, but he thinks it’s better this way. He knows how much Min-soo has been bothering her, and says that people who play the victim and want what others have will always end up that way—losing what they have in an attempt to gain what isn’t theirs.

Seol sighs and thinks to herself that Jung has been surrounded by people like this his whole life, when just one Min-soo is enough to make her this angry. Jung says he won’t rush her, and that if she can understand him and come a little closer, he can wait.

Seol asks, “So you just stand still and I go closer? Does that fix everything?” He says that he thought they were alike at first, but admits, “Now I know we’re just as different too.” He says he’s trying, to fix why she’s frustrated with him and why she can’t come close. He puts a bag of medicine in her hand for the wound on her face, and plays with her hair gently before pulling back. A tear escapes from Seol, but she doesn’t say a word as he walks away.

In-ho plays “Für Elise” for his teacher, who keeps making him play it over and over. He gets exasperated and asks how else he’s supposed to play it, and Teacher says it has no sincerity. He tells In-ho that his piano-playing used to have a core, and that what’s injured isn’t his hand, but his heart.

Teacher says that that’s what Professor Noh saw in him. In-ho balks at the mention of his former teacher, and gets angry to find out that his teacher told Professor Noh about his return. He grabs this things and storms out in a huff, only to deflate as soon as he gets to the hallway and hears another student playing “Danse Macabre.” It’s clearly what he wants to be playing instead.

In-ho catches up to Seol on her way off campus, and finds it weird that she’s being aloof and hiding her face under a hood. He yanks it back and gets all riled up at the scratch on her face (gah, why is he so cute lately?), and she tries to brush it aside like it’s nothing.

He demands to know who did this, asking if it was Stalker Boy, or In-ha. Lol, why is the list of usual suspects so long in your life? She just shoves the hood back on, and he asks if she plans to go home to her parents looking that way.

In-ho sits her down and buys ointment for her face, and when he sees her struggling to put it on by herself, he steps in and does it for her. He jokes that she’s turned into a fighter and asks, “Did you win?” Ha. He says if you fight you should at least win, and Seol sighs that there was no winning; it’s just complicated.

Seol says she’s been thinking about why Min-soo did all that, and she thinks that it’s a little like her being jealous of the girl who used to follow Jung everywhere—you don’t even really know why you’re envious, but you feel yourself trying to be more like her, and then feeling more desperate and pathetic when you’re not.

She says she’s only ever been angry at Min-soo, but never once tried to understand her, and wonders now if things would’ve gone this far if she had just accepted Min-soo as a friend.

Seol says it’s only after the fight that she can understand Min-soo a little, but Jung told her not to dwell on it. In-ho asks hesitantly if they made up, and Seol says no, but she’s begun to understand Jung a little more too. She realized that she only sees what she wants to see and hears what she wants to hear, and only saw him the way she wanted to.

In-ho stares at her for a long beat, contemplating what she said, and then quickly returns to his jokey self and tells Seol to think up an excuse to tell her parents before they get home.

The next day, Seol narrates that Min-soo never came back to school, and everyone supposed that she took the rest of the semester off. Everyone teases Seol and acts terrified of her, but Seol tells us in voiceover that the gossip died down eventually, and school continued on as normal.

In-ha makes herself some ramyun and pulls out one of In-ho’s piano books to put underneath the pot, and pauses when she sees the name Hong Seol all over the book. It’s one of Seol’s childhood piano books that she gave to In-ho, and In-ha cackles in glee because things just got interesting.

Seol doesn’t know how to answer a text from Jung asking if she’s doing well, and happens by Uncle’s bar as In-ho is playing “Für Elise.” She sneaks in and sits down next to him at the piano, and he blusters that he was just playing it for fun. She urges him to keep playing, marveling at how the same song can suddenly sound so different.

She calls his rendition very sad and full of longing, and guesses that songs take on a totally different feel depending on the player. That seems to spark something in In-ho, and he watches Seol play a few bars while calling out the notes when she struggles. She’s adorably proud, and he praises her with a smile.

He suddenly asks, “Should I go to school?” She says he’s already at school, but he means officially enroll as a student, after taking his high school equivalency exam, like she suggested last time.

Seol lights up and grabs In-ho’s hand in excitement, planning out how they’ll use Joon’s old books and they’ll plan a schedule so that she can help him study. She’s genuinely giddy, though In-ho can only focus on the hand that she’s touching.

He turns comically red-faced, his cheeks like two glowy balls of hormones as bright as a neon sign. His heart races and he just stares at Seol, and then his hand, and then back at her, in a daze.

She finally notices his radioactive cheeks and he tries to brush it aside, but when she reaches out to touch his face curiously, he jumps up. Aaaaaah. This is so cute. Seol is worried that he’s sick or something, and he’s so flummoxed that she basically chases him around the room until he finally comes up with the excuse that he has a cold and runs away. Hee. I have to watch that again.

They walk home and Seol worries about In-ho practicing so late if he’s sick, and asks if he’s taken any medicine. He just puts on a tough act and then wonders why she’s following him instead of going home, and she tells him she’s going to help close down the restaurant because he’ll be useless. They argue back and forth the whole way, each trying to get the other to go home.

In-ho’s eyes widen as soon as they step inside though, because In-ha is there waiting to pounce. She acts all innocent about wanting to see where her brother works, and then Mom happens by, and In-ha learns in one fell swoop that this is Jung’s girlfriend Seol and her parents’ restaurant.

In-ha asks threateningly if she’s really Jung’s girlfriend and not In-ho’s like she’d assumed, and Seol doesn’t back down. She answers, “Yes,” and suddenly In-ha turns sweet and friendly, insisting that their last phone call was a misunderstanding. In-ha says she’s just childhood friends with Jung and nothing more, and acts like she can’t wait to be friends with Seol.

In-ho knows better than to leave In-ha alone with Seol, and drags her away before she does anything else. Seol closes the door after them and takes a breath like a hurricane just passed through.

At home, In-ha confronts In-ho about being so close to Jung’s girlfriend, and asks if he’s doing it to get back at Jung. In-ho runs with that and says that’s what he’s doing, but In-ha can see right through his lies and knows he likes Seol. He insists he doesn’t, but that just convinces her more and she teases him with the piano book.

Seol begins tutoring In-ho at the library the next day, as promised. When she takes out junior-high level books to test him, he gets all huffy about it, though when she sets the clock and tells him to start, he struggles to answer the first question.

In-ho peeks over at her and puts a hand over his heart to see if it jumps again. It’s not racing like it was yesterday, and he decides with relief that it must’ve just been the cold. Hahaha.

Elsewhere in the library, Eun-taek and Bora see Stalker Boy Young-gon about to enter and give Seol the heads up. Seol gets to work shelving books and lets Young-gon come to her, knowing that Bora and Eun-taek are nearby filming the exchange.

Young-gon accuses her of two-timing Jung with In-ho, and somehow spins it around to accuse Seol of using him because he’s innocent and making a fool of him. He has so many screws loose, I don’t even know where to begin.

Seol struggles to stay patient for the sake of gathering evidence, but Young-gon starts throwing a violent tantrum around her, spilling books on the floor and demanding that she stop ignoring him. He makes such a ruckus that In-ho comes over, and of course he flips out and chases Young-gon again.

A chase ensues through the whole library, and Seol barely catches up to them in the lobby and pulls In-ho away before he can hit Young-gon. She points to Eun-taek and Bora who are filming the whole thing, and hits In-ho in exasperation for ruining yet another attempt to catch Stalker Boy in the act. So sweet and well-meaning, but so not helpful, Baek In-ho.

Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young sees the commotion and accuses him of coming to the library all the time to see Seol, but Young-gon swears that Seol is the one harassing him when he just happened to be looking for a book. She buys it, of course, because she already doesn’t like Seol.

Eun-taek sends the latest video to Jung, who looks far more concerned when he gets to the part in the video where In-ho shows up and chases after Stalker Boy. That’s twice now that In-ho has been around and saved the day.

On the subway ride home, In-ho asks what’s so important about getting evidence when the first thing they should do is make sure Young-gon never comes near her again (using his fists). Seol reminds him that Young-gon managed to get him fired last time and he won’t hesitate to press charges, and In-ho smiles to realize that she’s protecting him.

Another passenger squeezes into the empty seat next to In-ho, shoving him so close to Seol that their legs are touching, and suddenly his heart starts to race again. He jumps up in alarm to avoid more skinship.

He peers at Seol’s book about successfully landing a job and asks if she isn’t tired of always working so hard. She points out that he works a part-time job, plays piano, and is studying to get into college, which to her sounds like he’s working harder than she is. In-ho: “I don’t like working hard. I caught this from you!” It’s not a diease!

Seol mock-apologizes and then hands him a box of cold medicine (aww), insisting that this is her way of preventing herself from catching his cold. Yes, very selfish of you. How could he possibly not love you now?

Jung eats dinner with his father, who asks if everything is going well at the office. Dad asks if he’s getting along with his co-workers, and says he agreed to Jung keeping his identity a secret at the office, but wants to make sure that Jung isn’t doing anything that’ll cause issues down the line.

Jung gets really defensive and asks if Dad heard something from someone, and wonders why it always feels like he does everything that his father asks, only to have Dad see him as a problem child. Jung: “Am I that strange in your eyes? Does that make you nervous? Why?” He cuts dinner short and walks out, and glances at Seol’s picture as he drives home.

Someone calls Seol on her parents’ home phone late that night, and she’s alarmed when it’s Young-gon, with the creepy greeting that he always knows where she is and what she’s doing, and he wouldn’t have called home if she’d pick up her cell phone.

Young-gon: “Why do you make me like this? I thought about the library and I’ve decided to forgive you. I know you brought that gangster along just to show me. Is it because of Da-young noona? I told you I’d break up with her.” *skin crawl* Seol hangs up on him, but that just makes Young-gon think harder about how he’s going to cause a rift between Seol and Jung for good.

He decides that proving Jung as a two-timer is the best way, and texts In-ha the next day to ask her for proof that she’s Jung girlfriend. So In-ha sends him a picture of her and Jung sitting close together from a year ago, and then throws in a shot of her cleavage as a bonus, egging him on to send her pictures of him in return. Young-gon laps it up and spends the day just staring at her picture.

Meanwhile, In-ha sees sunbae Sang-chul harassing Nerdy nearby, and she chases him off. Sang-chul is such a mooch that he can’t even find someone to have coffee with at school, and even Young-gon starts to look down on him and think of him as a loser.

Seol gets fired from her library job over the ruckus that Young-gon caused yesterday, in particular because of student complaints about the incident online. The complaint must’ve come from Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young, because she watches Seol get fired with a satisfied smirk on her face.

Seol doesn’t have much of an appetite after that, Eun-taek and Bora try to cheer her up, not that it’s much help. Talk turns to future plans, and Bora says that her father’s going to open a shop for her, and Eun-taek says he’s going to become a model. Bora mocks him, and he challenges them: “How long do you think I’m going to be your underling?” Seol and Bora deadpan in unison: “Forever.” He doesn’t argue, and just puts side dishes on their plates like a dutiful minion.

Seol is dealt yet another blow when Young-gon texts her the picture of In-ha and Jung looking cuddly together. She’s so distracted that she barely registers In-ho arriving for his tutoring session, and he finally caves and tells her to get up so they can go home.

She’s still so in her head about the picture that In-ho has to prevent her from walking into lampposts, and it’s not until she looks up that she realizes that he’s walked her home. He insists that he’s going home, not walking her, but she points out that he lives in the opposite direction.

He just hands her the bag he’s been carrying all day and she opens it up to find a myriad of weapons, from mace, to a taser, to a retractable stick. Ha. They’re for use against Stalker Boy, obviously, and she thanks him.

In-ho asks what’s got her so lost in thought that she couldn’t even focus on studying, and when she says it’s nothing, he sighs that he thought she’d made progress with her brawling ways, but she’s back to holding everything in again. Seol says it’s not something that’ll be solved by talking about it, and heads home with a smile.

He watches her go and calls after her to open her eyes, and demonstrates by opening his eyes as wide as they go. She dutifully does the same, heh. In-ho watches her go and says to himself, “She can’t depend on me…” He decides that he wouldn’t depend on himself either, and lingers a while before turning around to walk home.

COMMENTS

Okay, I’m having to fight pretty hard not to be on In-ho’s ship. I know Seol likes Jung and only sees In-ho as a friend, but aaaaah, he’s being so cute and sweet and thoughtful, and they have such a wonderful easygoing rapport. Seol’s constant tension with Jung is so stressful sometimes that I find myself thinking how easy it would be if she were dating In-ho. That’s not really a reason to date a guy; it’s just hard not to compare them when the second lead is staring you in the face with those rosy cheeks. It was especially difficult not to think those thoughts when In-ho spent the entire episode doing all the right rom-com hero things, and struggling with his newfound feelings on top of it all.

I know that In-ho doesn’t always do things the best way either, but I was touched when he encouraged Seol to fight and be open about what’s bothering her instead of always enduring silently. I prefer his approach—encouraging her, arming her with weapons (lol)—compared to Jung’s method of stealth-fixing things for her, which always ends up backfiring on him when she discovers what he had to do to get there. Not to knock Jung’s approach completely though, considering that it was rather effective in dealing with Copycat Min-soo. She needed a public outing to stop her from being able to lie her way out of everything, and it’s one instance where I thought Jung managed to be helpful and not scary (or did Min-soo just overshadow him by being way creepier?). It doesn’t fix their problems, and maybe even confirms what Seol fears, but today I was so relieved at the outcome that I was grateful for Jung’s intervention. Because Seol should definitely fight her own battles, but when she’s up against crazies, a helping hand doesn’t hurt.

I still really worry that Jung doesn’t understand what’s wrong and will only continue to be this way though—trying to be good for Seol’s sake, but not really changing in the end. Was he showing restraint with Min-soo, or was this no different from him setting anyone else up for their demise? Is his cynicism just the result of a lifetime spent as the guy everyone wants something from, or is Dad’s worry about him something deep-seated and potentially disturbing? We’re beginning to see that this is a pattern with Jung—him trying his best to abide by a loved one’s rules, and hurt that they see him as strange no matter how well he abides. Maybe he can’t trust anyone because no one’s ever given him the benefit of the doubt, but hell, I don’t blame them for not being able to trust him fully, not when every flashback reveals another classmate’s comeuppance at his hand. Part of me thinks that if Seol broke things off cleanly, Jung might grow more and attempt to change before returning to her. Though the other part of me fears what might happen if she broke his heart entirely.

For now I’m content that In-ho did so much growing, thanks to Seol. He’s gone from a jobless, dreamless wanderer to a guy who’s willing to start at the bottom and work his way up for his dream, whether that’s playing elementary-level piano pieces or learning junior-high coursework. It’s an impressive turnaround, considering how prideful he was once, having to ask how a person works hard because he’d never had to work for anything before. I just especially love the way Seol inspires him to see music differently, and how she teaches him very naturally about the mood or feeling of a song changing depending on how it’s played. It seems obvious, but I can see how he might’ve been a prodigy who focused on technique and only ever learned to play a piece perfectly, without consideration for how he could interpret it and play sadly, or longingly. That’s the stuff that really gets me in the heart, though rosy cheeks are an adorable bonus.

Seriously though...this may be the first time ever that I want to jump ship onto the obvious second lead. Baek In Ho is definitely the kind of man I want to be with hahahaha

Now if this drama would end with Sul and Inho together I would be so happy. I could use more surprises because I was totally expecting Junghwan with Dukseon in 88 and that never happened!

I didn't expect to love Cheese In The Trap so much. With my crazy school deadlines I thought I could just coast by this drama by just reading the recaps, but now I'm having withdrawal symptoms every time I finish an episode! It just intrigues you, this drama, and I don't understand why? (Ok I do, and it's how relatable the characters are, not to mention the lovely cinematography)

I won't say much, I'm just commenting because I'm feeling the pain of waiting another two weeks for the next episode.

I love how Seol is positively influencing In-ho to be a better person, which tells me that if Jung allowed himself to be more open minded he will be impacted the same way as well. No matter how much I love Seol's and In-ho's interactions, it makes me wonder if it will serve as a reason for Jung to be even more "closed up" and that it will stand in the way of their reconciliation. We all see it as friendship but in the eyes of a boyfriend it's a whole different matter. I try to walk in Jung's shoes and sometimes I do get why he does things the way he does. It's just his personality and thought process.

One question though, it's quite stupid but I'm curious nonetheless: I saw how Jung fell for Seol (and who won't, she's lovable) but what does Seol like about him? What made her be attracted to him? I never saw it, to be honest, or maybe I skimmed over that particular scene without too much thought... Please help me answer this!!

Thanks for the recaps, it makes waiting a whole lot easier.

And on a superficial note, I get why Min-soo changed her wardrobe. Seol's outfits are amazingly gorgeous and perfect!

Bedroom scene in ep 6 and the conversation that takes place both out loud and silently says why both Jung and Seol like each other. How they connect with and understand one another, and how they are alike and share similarities that some in the audience that I guess just isn't enough.

Also I feel that from their very first meeting there was s kind of curiosity...intrigue...and attraction from both towards both but for both it was a dangerous attraction that both tried to ignore/do away with for varying reasons. Also from the beginning both noticed and were bothered by one another and it wasn't all due to dislike, hats, fear, or distrust. I guess in that vain you could say they were/are Lizzie and Darcy of Pride and Prejudicd from their first meeting, until their coming together.

There was always something there (Seol steals/noticed sunbae just as much as he dies her) Euntaek even comments as much "do you prehaps like Yoo Jung" also Seol's inner thoughts in the bridge meet in ep 1. But if you don't see/get it, then you just don't and that's fine (different strokes for different folks and all). However to answer your question ep 6 all of it but especially the bedroom room scene and flashback and thoughts and conversation had.

I have been pretty wary about the Darcy/Jung comparisons because I'm not wholly sold on the Pride and Prejudice character comparisons. But I think what is similar is this particular quality - Elizabeth sees through Darcy's social snobbery at the dance and lets him know it. Seol sees through Jung's social machinations (letting the drink spill to get rid of someone, rather than have to tell them to go away) and sneers at him.

In a world where everyone has a facade, to an extent, and plays the polite, conventional roles - there's something very intriguing and provocative about a moment of rupture - and seeing someone else recognise it too. With friends and colleagues, I have that sometimes - in a social/work setting and someone is definitely spouting some self-aggrandising bullshit or where you can recognise someone trying to wheedle for something - and your eyes meet in acknowledgement. It's a moment of kindredness. In a sense, Jung and Seol had those moments, and though they were adversarial - they know each other have that capacity to see deeper.

I have to admit, when I started reading the webtoon, I was also one of those who felt a Pride & Prejudice vibe to the story. Where Seol (Elizabeth) and Jung (Darcy) started off having strong negative opinions of each other because of certain circumstances. And then In Ho gets in the picture (Wickham) and starts badmouthing Jung. Seol is quick to believe In Ho's words since she doesn't really have a high opinion of Jung, add to that the other building *evidence* of Jung's deeds (homeless man etc).

I like what you said about Jung and Seol being kindred spirits. There is a much deeper understanding that bonds them.

For me, there's always been something really strange about both of their initial and very strong dislike of each other. We ask why Jung was so terrible (I'm not excusing or defending his actions), but we forget that Seol has made her dislike obvious since she smirked after realizing he purposefully let go of the drink so it would spill on Joo Yeon (which btw, wasn't this horrible action Seol made it out to be, JY wasn't leaving him alone after he'd made it pretty clear he wanted to be).

They've always been overly aware, overly fixated, and overly hateful (that's mostly on Jung) to each other. It's a bit...much. Which is why I always thought there was this underlying attraction and interest there for each other, but I don't think it was conscious to either of them, nor was it something they'd accept if it was a conscious attraction.

They didn't make Seol's growing feelings and attraction as ridiculously obvious as In Ho's were this episode. But it was there in subtle ways imo. How she had to remind herself he was cunning, and not to fall for that smile. Why would you tell yourself not to fall for a guy's smile because he's cunning if you weren't attracted to him? I saw it build from there, and I really got the feeling that like Lin said, episode 6 explained a lot. Seol herself can't really explain her attraction, but it's there. He's there. And she's invested. She's uncomfortable with him buying things or taking her on expensive dates, so it's not his money. She thinks she misunderstood him but she never fully trusts him so she's not blinded to his flaws. It's not that he's the most popular guy on campus, because she doesn't like the attention she gets from her status as his girlfriend. And I don't believe it's just as shallow as him being good-looking.

So Seol does like something about Jung, and it could be that he relates to her on a level she hasn't felt before. Has any others, even Bo Ra, told Seol the very thing she's wanted to hear from her parents? Has Seol opened up to anyone about how insignificant she feels compared to her brother, about the lack of affection even when she works hard and hopes for it, any of that? I found it telling Seol was comfortable enough with him to open up that early on about something I'm unsure whether her best friends are even aware of. There's something there, and I don't think it needs to be articulated right now, because that's how real life is. Sometimes you can't articulate why you're attracted or have a connection with someone, you just...do.

I do agree with you. I think they were attracted to each other, especially when he spilled the drink purposely it was Seol's reaction that he looked at first, or maybe that was just coincidence. I think Seol is also comfortable with him emotionally like that, because as they always reiterated, they are mostly alike. They were both treated as pushovers by people and they were mostly keeping their emotions in. I really love Jung's character especially the Min-soo take down, he did not stop her from the fight, he is not pacifying(? I guess that's the word I should use) he wanted her to fight it out and get it out of her system which is kind of ironic because he never did have that much of an outlet of release from his emotions and with that, I am honestly convinced that both Seol and Jung are best for each other, in that they help each other grow. We can already see that Seol is giving Jung the chance to think things through, and as he said, he is working on it, why Seol is frustrated with him. I am having serious withdrawal symptoms right now. Why no cheese? it's new year! come on!

Hi Sara :) I believe I saw that most pronounced in episode 6 when he tells her that she's doing great and its nice to see how hard she works at life. These are words she has wanted to hear from her parents (or anyone really) forever. Early on in episode 2 when he was cleaning her wound, and showed concern, she says to herself that it was unlike anything she felt before. Besides that you can see how much he adores her from afar and is intrigued by her. She has to make a conscious effort to not fall for his smile. Also, I think there has been an unspoken attraction between them from the beginning. A deep curiosity from both sides. Gah! How I love them.
I also just started watching and am totally addicted. Probably because how raw and relatable it is. Next week needs to come sooner!!

I don't even get why an almost shipper war is a brewing when I feel that the show has been pretty clear on what is about. A girl who has met and wants to be with a boy who is fundamentally very different from her in the way he thinks and interacts with people. The development, growth, changes extra, comes down to this:

Girl wants to be with this boy but will she succeed? Will he? Seol herself said it during her "time out speech" se wants to trust her boyfriend, she wants to understand her boyfriend, she wants to grow closer to him, for him to be honest, for him to listen to her for him to basically show her who he is because as she said "I don't know what to do when these things happen, who are you sunbae?"

Now, the first half we saw despite their differences and issues both from themselves and others they are together and want to be together. The second half shall be can they stay together? Will she be able to achieve all the above that she wants out of the relationship? How much work and effort will both put in. How much will thus relationship help each other grow, develop, change for the better or not?

The drama has been pretty straight forward that it is Jung and Seol's world and we're seeing everyone come in and out of it, and will they and what they have survive it or not.

Inho and Jung are two very different persons/characters with very different purposes and necessity to Seol's life and journey, and this story as a whole. Comparing (and pegging them against one another) the two is like comparing apples to oranges and does a disservice to both their characters and their ultimate purpose within the story imho. Can't we enjoy (or did some not enjoy) both and their function/purpose in the story?

I for one I am hoping the drama gets more into the background/shared history they have and the fall out and how it really happened on both sides. I also hope we get more into Kungs father, their relationship, the one he has with the Baek siblings, and why he took the two in, in the first place. Also how adult decisions affected children and who they are and their relationships today.

Sometimes reading comment made me fume, but most of the time it made me smile. And yours is one of them Lin. I watch and re-watch the episodes, and still love them, and understand it more of the so many flashbacks, and I truly agree that people plays different roles in other people's lives. In this drama it's Seol's and Jung's. Even how terrible and bad it is, it is needed for growth of their character. Like Jung and the Baek siblings, and Seol with the crazies around her. It helped her grow as a person, to stand up for herself more, and voice more of her opinion. It is wonderful to see a character grown. And yes, I also would like to know more about the history of the characters, but I think it will come in the coming episodes. The drama have been doing a great job, I am hoping they will give us most splendid last 6 episodes.

There is no doubt in my mind that Seol romantically only loves Jung. Their romantic moments are beautiful, adorable, complicated, intriguing and a lot of things. But I ship Inho, not InhoxSeol, but Inho as a character. I think he is ending up in my list of favorite characters of all time alongside Healer-ya! and many others. There's something special about him that makes him endearing and more than the cookie cutter second lead that many people are saying he is. It's different somehow and I am not sure how to explain it or even if I know the reason why. Maybe it is his perseverance storyline, I am all about perseverance, that is my life motto. Or his secret kindness that only comes out for the right people, that is so heartwarming.

Personally, I think I act more like Jung or Seol as introverted and not expressive of my feelings. But that is why I would want someone like Inho in my life because I think Inho is a character that inadvertantly helps the people around him be better people. Again, I am not in any shipping side or war here. I don't think there is really any question. But in the realm of CITT characters, this is why I am #teamInho

I never like the name calling, I do not find them cute nor funny. Name calling is for children age 5ish, not for a grown man to a girl. I can forgive him now that their relationship is sibling like, because I do that with my brothers, we mock and joke and name calling for fun. But, not a man calling a woman "insert any name calling you can think of". In Ho lost his charm in any way as a man for me since he called her dog fur. That is condescending!

Glad you're having a great time! I really enjoyed that part in the bar with drunk Seol and how she was so sassy to both boys. Also, because of that scene I started hoping for a reconciliation between Jung and In Ho. The part where Jung carried drunk Seol home and In Ho kept telling him to watch where he put his hands while pointing with an umbrella ("son! son!") ..hee, I found that super cute!! Bring on the bromance!

I really dislike jung's dad. Tsk. I've read the webtoon too. It's so easy to become a parent, but it is extremely difficult to become a good parent. And then because jung is already an adult, people will tell him to move on from how his dad treated him. Grrr just how about no. His dad was told that his son was weird. He heard this from a person who saw one incident and immediately judged the kid as problematic. The dad believed what he heard and started treating his kid like a freak. He didn't really care about shaping him into a better person, it was about saving face and not letting other people know that jung was peculiar. And then he goes and treats other kids better and with affection because they're what he deems as normal.

I finally had a Eureka moment when I realized why this drama was called Cheese In The Trap. Jung is the guy who baits the trap with "Cheese" and more often than not, these deviants fall into his trap and get caught.

Whoa! that's a really scary thought.

I think Seol is the cheese and Jung is the rat (deceitful, loyal only to himself, uncaring...)

Jung-the-rat is already caught in the trap, taking bites of Seol-the-cheese.

As most rats caught in the trap, Jung-the-rat will die.

In a promo for the show, Jung had cheese floating above his head and Seol had cute ears and a tail, so...

Hmm...I think it is just the relationship? I mean a relationship in general was the last thing on Seol's mind (she even says something to that effect when he asks her out), so it could essentially be a trap in that it's brought more stress down on her life (but could be worth it in the end).

IDK I think you could really analyze the crap out of it but it could be simply that she was ~caught in the trap of love~

I'm hoping that no matter who the rat is, no one dies lol.

Park Hae Jin is an actor I truly admire. Did anyone notice the similarities in action but utter difference in mood that happened when Jung held the hair of real Seol and fake Seol?

When he touched fake Seol's hair, you could feel the menace and coldness emanating from him, but a similar action with real Seol conveyed love, caring and longing.

Whew, I always knew he was good, but now I know he's really very good. Not many actors can convey it subtly and still get their point across like he can.

I'm really struggling not to succumb to second-lead syndrome. I've never had much of a problem with it before, but In-ho is a more complicated character then other second leads, and Jung isn't the practically perfect leading man that other dramas have. Don't get me wrong, I really like that. It makes this show SO much more interesting, and very different from other rom-coms. Still, its hard to see In-ho is all his red-cheeked glory and know that he's (probably) not going to get the girl in the end. Great reccap, fantastic show.

The show seems to do that on purpose.
I think a major theme of this story may be to avoid snap judgments and get the whole story.

Based on the comments on ALL the episodes (compared to say just this one), there are an lot of ppl who agree with you. So no, you're not alone. :)

Personally, I started out not wanting to defend Jung at all but there were so many anti comments unilaterally writing him off (not ones like yours and/ or ones which are well reasoned but the "he's a sociopath, all sociopaths wil kill and should die ", that I'm spending far too much time getting everyone to try holding their opinions til we get the whole story (at least get his viewpoint and story...he hasn't even defended himself yet) and see how this plays out.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I'm thinking the theme is how our life experiences shape our perceptions and judgements of those around us.

It's easy to always come to the worst conclusions where Jung's involved not only because of his shadier actions but because we've mainly seen him through Seol's eyes. Which begs the question: how would we view this same drama through Jung's pov? Would we see an irrationally judgmental Seol who blames him for everything (still not defending him, he did some wrong things and is thankfully paying for them, I'm just being objective lol)? Would we see so clearly how people try to take advantage of Jung's actual generosity (Sang Chul from the very beginning) and all the other actions Jung got back at people for that would be pretty enraging (stealing from him like the TA did for example)?

Because neither Seol or Jung or anyone in this drama is a 100% reliable narrator. Just like real life, there are three sides to every story. Let's let the drama hopefully flesh Jung out more! But I hope Seol continues to call him out and force this dude to explain and let out his emotions more.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yup, too many people leaning to extremes either way actually - I find the ones that are super defensive of Jung as bad as the ones that automatically condemn him, because he (as most of the other characters here) is so complex and so able to contain multitudes in himself that he's often doing something both right and wrong at the same time (again, as most other characters here) - sometimes with good intentions (and we often see how THAT plays out in reality) - and I find that it's a simply bit too cheap when we immediately wave off his actions as good OR bad.

Seol doesn't owe Minsoo a friendship just because she admires her just like Jun doesn't owe Minsoo a relationship just because she finds him cute.

Minsoo has self esteem issues and she needs to work on herself without demanding contributions from others. Is Seol a therapist? No. Is Seol her relative? No. Expecting Seol to solve Minsoo's issues is unfair. She owe Minsoo bupkus.

I was so annoyed at In Ho to be honest. How much more can he insert himself in Seol's life? There are elements of Minsoo in him, too, ie. Wanting to have her student life, wanting her family, buddying up with her brother, parents, uncle, getting her to hate Jung, hang around her old house, her academy, annoit himself as her protector, inserting himself in her business, walking her home, taking the same subway etc. I guess it's fine as Seol doesn't mind him but honestly, how is his (sometimes unwanted) constant presence differ from Minsoo's "admiration" for Seol's life? gawd, give me a chance to miss your face!

It's so easy and natural, they support each other, they ease each other's pains. It's beautiful and how I want it to be, but I should start preparing myself for the heartbreak that is ahead. Seol likes Jung and she'll always be drawn to him. That's the impression that she gives me.

Cheese in the trap is a very interesting drama, and I find Jung's character very interesting as a character. I don't fully understand him yet, but I know he's a great guy.

There are still many things that hasn't been solved yet, like why IH still thinks Jung was the one who cause his hand injury? and why Jung's personality can be mysterious and sweet and smart and outgoing at different occasions?

IMO it's expected already that IH is eventually gonna develop feelings for Seol, at it is normal for him to like her because she's been the only person next to him that has been cheering and supporting him to pursue his piano studies. IMO he feels that after such a long time, someone has finally cares about him again, about his dream and passion in life.

Despite IH's feeling development for Seol, I still think it would be great if she stays with Jung. I know how their relationship experience many ups and downs in almost every episode, however I think Seol is the only one who can make Jung open up himself. Seol is the only one who's willing to do that, and probably when she finds out about Jung's relationship with his father, she's the one who's gonna help him out eventually, she's the person who will make sure Jung feels safe. Jung's feelings for Seol is sincere, and so is Seol's towards Jung.

In this drama, I believe the goal of each main characters is to overcome the "problems" with their characters and "problems" in their life.

Like for IH, I believe eventually he will be able to "forgive" Jung about the hand incident. Jung might later reveal the truth about the past and in the end the two guys will resolve their misunderstandings. Also, I guess IH will also achieve his dream of becoming a pianist. Although I love the idea of Jung and Seol staying together, it's really not bad if IH in the end, ends up with Seol. IH is comfortable around her and he feels that freedom when he's with her. With IH, Seol is able to voice our all her feelings and not hide it. It's something admirable if they become a true couple. But, I still think it's best for the two to remain as friends.

As for In Ha, I believe she will, at the end, find someone who can tone down her loud character, she might end up with Jaewoo, or someone else, but I guess she will be able to achieve that at the end of the drama. Although it seems like In Ha kind of has a crush on Jung, I don't think Jung is the kind of person who can lead her and tone down her loud character for the better. In Ha is not someone who can tone down her character by being treated "harshly" or with discipline. Instead, IMO she's the kind who can tone down her character when she's faced with someone who's soft, patient and gentle.

As for Jung, as I explained earlier, he will have happiness in life by being with Seol, by having her as his best companion who understands fully about his problems with people in his circle.

And Seol, for me, is the heroine of this show...

(continue) Seol is the only one in the drama to show full support for IH to pursue his dreams and attend college by being with him and have a duet piano practice sometimes, and even help him with his college entrance exam. Also, i don't know it it was sincere, but the scene at Seol's parents' restaurant hen In Ha found out about her being Jung gf, instead of being crazy over it, she was totally cool, and she even treated her as a fellow friend and wanted to have girl talk with her. Seol is also sincere with her actions with Jung, she wants her relationship to work by being honest if she's mad, if she sad, and if she's confused about Jung. Jung is starting to be open too, and he also tries to reflect on himself for Seol.

I don't mind if either Jung or IH ends up with Seol, because both characters are great for Seol. However, I still think there's a purpose of why Jung is mysterious in this drama, and for that, I think, Seol is gonna be the one who's gonna help us, viewers, understand his character much better.

Actually is that Episode 9 that she said that? During the fight in the falling leaves.

I think Seol means Jung is still all about the machinations instead of letting things (and people) be. He engineered Seol's scholarship with TA Heo, and now, the Seol-Minsoo confrontation by (apparently) making sure Joon was in the right place at the right time. About the Joon situation, I didn't read it that way myself, though. I thought Joon just asked Jung to buy him a meal. I didn't think Jung had initiated contact.

Jung gets so much credit for orchestrating every move all the characters make until I keep expecting to hear "...in the beginning Jung..." In reality these traps are set by the different characters because of their own behaviors. Jung reach into the outcomes have been rather limited. Each outcome has been based on the characters' input; there has been stealing, plagiarizing, sneakiness (taking the picture of Jun without permission), and both physical altercations were the direct result of a physical offense by the perpetrator.
Also, it appears most of the negative comments about Jung is being without any real proof are piggy-backed by other observers.
I understand some are emoting their desire for In-ho to become Seol's boyfriend (personally I think that would be a negative reflection on Seol's character at this point) and I find his recognition of his growing feelings for Seol should cause him to gentlemanly move out of the picture. He does not seem to be good boyfriend material in my opinion, especially for a girl like Seol. He has a lot maturing to do as well as a gift to exercise. However, it is truly up to Seol if she wants to be his babysitter and give up her opportunities in life for which she has not even begun to map. He would definitely be another trap for her to fall prey.

I don't think either guy is the "ideal" boyfriend tbh, but it's clear Seol and Jung are more romantically compatible, plus she is actually attracted to him. Why people are comparing the dynamics of a (complicated) romantic relationship to a friendship baffles me, but I blame the drama for playing up the love triangle.

I agree that a lot of Jung-hate is piggy-backing, and In Ho's flaws are not discussed enough. I think the same thing re: Seol babysitting In Ho if they were in a romantic relationship. He's had growth, but he's too emotional and impulsive and needs guidance. He's not prince charming. I see so many comments about how there's mutual growth and support (duh, they're friends, it should be this way especially after how he mooched off her a good while), and how Jung NEEDS Seol or must be "fixed" by her and I disagree wholeheartedly. Both guys can benefit from her influence in their lives, just like she can from them, but Jung and Seol are self-sufficient individuals who work well alone, can survive, and don't rely on people. They don't need each other, they want each other. Huge difference. Jung needs to change, but his flaws and manipulations get so blown out of proportion that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't at this point compared to the puppy a good portion of the audience has always viewed In Ho as.

In Ho seems like he relied wayyyy too much on his talent (understandable) and praise in his past, so I think he is the one who needs someone to care and be there for him as he tries to go after his dream. There's nothing wrong with that, but this is why I feel his feelings are so misplaced, and they should remain friends.

Jung said it himself, why do people keep asking him to forgive them when he catches them doing something wrong? Then blame him like it's his fault when they get caught in their own mistakes? I always wondered that, right from the very start, and I'm surprised that the people around him find it easier to point fingers, just so they won't take responsibility for their own actions.

Jung isn't without fault. Is he manipulative? Yes. Scary? Yes. Lacks warmth, empathy? Yes. Can be malicious? Yes. But when I look at the things he's supposedly 'done' wrong, I always find myself not being angry at him, rather, agreeing with his choices, albeit not the best choices in the world.

The lead actress in these series does an amazing job, kudos!!! I would also like to commend the lead actor’s dark side as a positive aspect of this drama and sincerely hope they do not change it for the remaining episodew. There are not a lot of movies/ dramas where you can sympathize with a dark male lead and wish that they make it and not get caught. Check out “Match Point” by Woody Allen.

When watching a drama, it's always easy to confuse these 3 things

a) who the lead girl likes for herself
b) who the lead girl should end up in my opinion
c) who I want to date between the two guys

For example, most drama viewers always feel a connection with one of the lead guy characters because they like that character's personality more, so naturally they want that character to get what he wants, which is in most cases, the love of the lead girl. So yeah, In ho is cute and helpful and it would be great if Seol ends up with her but... that's not what the lead girl wants.

Seol has always been interested in Jung even before she liked him. Even when she just met him, she was always watching him, even with her negative opinion of him. And what more, that negative opinion of hers made her keep tabs on him more than usual, more than the normal attention she pays to her other classmates.

So while it's easy to confuse who I want for her, Inho who'd be good to her and everything, I also want her to end up with who she wants for herself, which is either Jung or no one.

Also, I fully sympathize with Jung and it pains me that instead of trying to understand him and reach out to him, the people around him would rather blame him for thinking differently. He has a dark side, manipulative and scary but pushing him to his own corner is only going to make him cause more harm and cause himself harm.

I Remember You drama from last year comes to mind. It's easier to label people monsters when we don't understand them, rather than try to understand them and heal them.

sincerely when I think of it, there are some interesting twists to this drama that makes me think it has one of the most realistic characterization.

its not until you are perfect in every sense that you are allowed to enjoy benefits. Jung woo is a human too and so he comes with his own flaws and shortcomings. fine, he is creepy and scary and all but let's not forget that he also has half of his mind like that of a child. there are three scenes where I have seen him so delighted by the mere sight of insects on flowers and all that. he's just someone in need of corrective companionship and not heavy criticism. seol is not helping matters by hanging around In ho all the time because at the end of the drama, she will render the superb In ho pitiful when she goes back to Jung.

besides, I am afraid I am getting these dream high vibes where the main hero was unclear and she ends up with the weird guy instead of the cool guy. I don't think my poor heart can afford that in this particular drama.

also, I really like Jung woo and I still think there's a little hidden story there, after all, he once got along really well with the baeks. In ho is a cool guy I was just hoping we could for once shoot for him to be really good friends with jung and seol by the end of this drama instead of second lead but its kdrama after all.

I wish they also didn't make seol narrate from the beginning, our opinion of Jung might at least have been less severe. I bet he wouldn't be this creepy but that's what makes it more interesting I guess.

all in all, can't wait for the next episode.

oh my gosh i am already on Baek In Ho Ship... i know maybe will sink anyway,
I misinterpreting Yoo Jung's character in the drama, I thought he was a sociopath (he's like dexter character in a social world ) but apparently not. he was trapped in his childhood soul, where the 'eye for eye' may also be because they he was always lonely, maybe he looks friendly and allow himself to be used. but actually he is building walls and fortress for himself. he hoped to use kindness as weapon to save him from this unfortunate situation. He was minimal consequences as a kid. well as long Hong Seol love Yoo Jung he can go with the girl ... poor Baek In Ho

I've been re watching all the episodes as I was having CIIT withdrawals. Did anyone else notice that Soel, Jung and In Ho, all have worn a 3/4 sleeve stripped (b/w for our 2 leads and gray/w for In Ho) boat neck shirt. Soel wears hers when she is having weird thoughts after falling into Jung 's arms after they take neighbor home. Jung wears his in the flashback scene where Soel takes care of him when he was sick. In Ho wears his on his last day at the English academy.
