Teen angst and classical music in Page Turner

I hope this is a new trend, the broadcasters putting out quality drama shorts that get me excited. Because I’m pretty stoked about Page Turner, the team-up between Kim So-hyun (Who Are You—School 2015), Ji-soo (Sassy Go Go), and writer Park Hye-ryun (I Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio), even though it does make me sad that it’s not a longer drama. The short 3-episode series is due out next month on KBS, and though the first teaser seems really dramatic (or is that just the classical music soundtrack?), the cast-writer team is enough to get me to tune in.

The youth drama stars Kim So-hyun as a genius pianist, a naturally gifted student with dreams of becoming a concert pianist someday. She’s under a lot of pressure from a mother who lives vicariously through her accomplishments, but she’s driven and always wins first place. Her biggest rival is played by Shin Jae-ha (he was the boy with glasses on Sassy Go Go’s cheerleading squad and the young Yoon Kyun-sang in Pinocchio), the constant second-place student who works tirelessly but can never beat her.

Someone narrates in the teaser that a page turner can really save a performance… or ruin one if they’re so inclined. Then we see the two rivals volunteer to be each other’s page turners. Well that can’t be good. Ji-soo, on the other hand, is a promising young pole-vaulter with a personality like a bulldozer. He and Kim So-hyun will be involved in a tragic accident which will change both of their lives forever.

It sounds heavy, but I fully expect it to be an acting showcase for Kim So-hyun and Ji-soo, where they can let loose for three hours of raw teen angst. Not to mention that I trust the writer to deliver a strong backbone for the youth music drama (she did, after all, write Dream High). The teaser’s closing copy reads: “The record of youth stops here. The only thing that remains is one last page.”

Shooting has already been completed on Page Turner, and the series will premiere in February on KBS.

Despite being home-schooled. Kim So Hyun sure get to wear school uniform during acting.

It so pity that these talented young actors doing drama special like 2-3 episode length instead of 16 episodes. The next one will be Nam Ji Hyun and Yeon Jun Suk drama.

I got nervous too! I've got a theory on that bridge scene. Because of the supposed accident, she can't play piano anymore, which was he main goal in life. So she becomes depressed and unhappy that she goes to that bridge to kill herself...hoping Ji Soo saves her!!!
(she injured in that scene, so it probably takes after the accident)

Excited for that one too. But I don't know where to watch SBS drama special. For KBS drama they upload it on their Youtube channel KBS WORLD TV usually after two weeks.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! I am so ready for this, it's like the drama gods are really giving us the goods.

(now can y'all please get Ji-soo paired up with Eunji for his next drama, drama gods? And a full-length Yoon Doo-joon/Kim Seul-gi pairing, since the two-episode one turned out so beautifully in Splish Splash Love?)

Also, Shin Jae-ha is pretty promising himself - it took wiki to make me realise that dorky Tae-pyung of Sassy Go Go was the younger version of hyung in Pinocchio! And he also had a cameo in I Remember You....totally different between all three roles.

Better waiting for this to be posted on DB after I saw the teaser the other day!! Soooooooooooo excited!!! I love the cast and I love the writer!!! So, I have high expectations of this. I'm watching all things Jisoo. LOL KSH is awesome as well. And I finally clued in about SJH after checking out the teaser since I saw Pinocchio and Sassy Go Go. XD He really plays different roles. ^^ Counting down to Feb!! I know it's gonna be one of those dramas that I wish that were more than a few mere ep's, like Splish Splash Love. =P

re: SJH, it took me the longest time to realise why the kid looked so familiar - I remembered him as the younger version of hyung from Pinocchio, only there he was mostly crying heart-rendingly. But he is so good even in these small roles.

I hope Park Hae-ryun does a full-length drama with Ji-soo someday soon. It's interesting that she chose to return to the short drama format after three successes in a row with full series, so I hope this is a sign she's gearing up for something.

I actually really liked SJH in Pinocchio, but I didn't look up his name back then. I'm also a fan of young Dalpo (Nam Dareum). But he looked so different in Sassy Go Go that I didn't put two and two together even upon finishing the series. LOL Then, I saw this teaser and looked up the name SJH!! Ohhhhh!! Hahaha!! He's Taepyung!! I'm so happy all three are in this. =)

Yes, I hope so, too! Interestingly, I don't usually follow who writes which drama, but I have watched Dream High, I Hear Your Voice, and Pinocchio. I enjoyed all three, so I'm happy and have high expectations since it's the same writer. Let's hope she and Jisoo had a great working collaboration through this and will pave the way for more teaming up later on. ^^

I had no idea either! He actually looked awfully familiar but I couldn't remember him in Pinocchio at all, but now seeing him like this reminds me of how good he was. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of her dramas too so I have pretty high hopes for this one, hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

Haha! I can't believe I saw the whole Sassy Go Go without recognizing him. He did make an impression in Pinocchio though he didn't have many scenes. Yup! Highly anticipating this as we have a strong trio for the leads and a great writer. ^^

Hm, interesting. What's weird is that people who play classical piano at this level have their music memorized and don't need page turners. I'm sure there must be something in the plot to justify the page-turning, since it's the name of the drama, lol.

Otherwise, looks great! Hope Jisoo gets the girl this time.

I don't think high-level piano players never need page turners, since I've seen a French movie based on the same idea. Though that was much darker than anything KBS would ever put in a 3-hour mini-drama.

Shin Jae-ha looks like a young Kim Kang-woo...nothing like adorkable Tae-pyung from Sassy Go Go! I totally didn't realise he was also in Pinocchio. Now I have to go find him in it...

so true, that drama shorts are getting very interesting, and it seems that many actresses get more diverse and unconventional roles there than in longer dramas, so they can display their abilities satisfyingly. But the shorts rarely get subbed...

To be quite honest, I'm not planning to watch any drama form awhile, since anything seems new. But this one has everything to be fantastic, many interesting elements. Too bad it only has 3 episodes, it would be nice if it was longer, not 16 episodes but 8 episodes like White Christmas.

Also, the bridge scene reminds me of School 2015, a drama that I liked despite its flaws.

I dislike to see Ji Soo crying because he still looks lovely while crying, how is that even possible? He cries acting with his heart, not caring for anything but his performance, yet he still looks good. A cool guy, for sure.

I heard a scream at the end of the preview. I played it back again just to be sure. The music didn't seem to be operatic so it couldn't have been the beginning of a sung note. Weird right?

The teaser was initially shown at the KBS Drama Awards so the 'scream' at the end is actually the audience. They were just clapping and screaming after the teaser was shown. =D

I predict the tragic accident is either, kim sohyun tries to jump and jisoo saves her, barely getting her to live so she teaches him piano, which was always his dream, OR they switch bodies while they both fall when he tries to save her from jumping.
