Oh Snap! Answer us, Ryu Joon-yeol

Newbie actor Ryu Joon-yeol may have left some fans wanting in the wake of Answer Me 1988’s ending, but here’s a teaser from his photo spread in next month’s edition of Marie Claire.

In the interview, the 29-year-old actor said, “In life, which is filled with good, bad, happy, and regretful moments, I want to become an actor that brings comfort to people who watch my work, even if I portray a villain. I hope to show a different side of me in my next project.”

As a bonus, here are a few snaps of him as the new face of Samchunly bicycles.

The v-app indeed make us move on faster. :D And I think Hyeri was number one #teamjunghwan (like most of us). Both cried so hard after know they won't end up together.

"The only thing the scriptwriter cared about at the end was proving all of the spoilers wrong. She ruined the drama because of it." I saw this and I agreed completely. People expected it to be Junghwan so I think the writer just wanted to throw a twist and it ruined the show for me. The husband in 2016 looked and acted just like Junghwan, it made no sense for him to be Taek. Anyway, AM1988 was ruined for me but I look forward to this cutie's next project where hopefully he gets the girl.

I think husband's hair is styled like that to cover Taek's scar in the forehead. I do think that the future husband acts like Taek from the earlier episodes. the bickering dynamic between jh-ds and tk-ds is different, and the future people's bickering is more like tk-ds.

Ryu Jun Yeol is just so hawt <3

0

I know right, it's not like someone's hairtyle will be the same after 27 years.. All of them even change their hairstyle in only 6 years gap (1988-1994)

0

I disagree. While the 2016 husband seemed more like JH (at first), Taek was always a contender and the fact that he was going to be the husband became more evident with every episode.

While Taek was a contender, he was #3 until the end (when Sun-woo clearly showed he had no interest and instead, was interested in Bora and when Jung-hwan repeatedly fumbled the ball and never disclosed his feelings for Deok-sun).

DS had always treated Taek more like a little boy she had to mother (taking care of him when it comes to eating and getting rest).

Also, when the ajummas (including her mother) would joke about DS marrying Taek - it always seemed that it was a "joke" to her as well (something she didn't take seriously).

Only when Taek started to assert himself so that DS would see him as a "man" - did DS change in how she viewed her relationship w/ Taek.

It was hard to gauge who DS really liked better, since it seemed that she liked everyone but Dong-ryong at some point; so if things had been different - if SW had liked her instead of Bora or JH hadn't been so secretive about his feelings (if he had really confessed instead of turning his confession into a joke), either one could have ended up as the hubbie.

One curious point is when DS told Taek the reason why she lied about their 1st kiss was b/c they were friends and she was afraid that things would be awkward.

DS didn't seem to have the same concerns when it came to SW or JH - so, the only way this makes any sense is if she saw her relationship w/ Taek as being different (just like how the rest of the gang all treated Taek differently and protected him), but I don't think it indicated that she saw him in a romantic light more than SW or JH (if anything, less so, which is why she needed to switch her thinking about their relationship).

As for JH, despite his prickly exterior, he continually put the feeling of others ahead of his, even to his own detriment.

While it would have been nice to see a "happy ending" for JH, that would have been too cliche and Hollywood; and sure, he very likely could be happily married, but at the same time, regardless, it's difficult to get over one's 1st love, esp. if that person is one of your best friends growing up.

While it has been stated that JH has surpassed Chilbong in being "Chilbonged" - he was always in a different situation than CB.

CB never had a real chance w/ Na-jung as her eyes/heart was only on Trash; JH, otoh, had a real chance w/ DS and at one point was in the best position and just had to reveal his feelings to DS.

And yes, I do think the writer "trolled" the viewers - but once all the signs hinted towards JH, pretty much set that the writer was going to switch things up.

0

I agree with you monkeyspunk. DS only like Junghwan and Sunwoo because her friends told her that they like her. She like Taek and always take care of Taek whoever her crush is. Anyone who ended up with Taek will have to be motherly considering Taek's personality. There's no real spoiler about who is the husband, all the writer did just proving all the clues were right. Going to this article to see Ryu JunYeol, but I can't help defending the writer when reading the comments

0

I know right! She gave all of us hope that the present husband was Junghwan because his features and even the way he acts shouts "Junghwan." He was even the one talking in the background of the drama.

And even though he couldn't get the girl, can't the writer even tell us how he's doing or where he is now? How could they just cut him off? She could've atleast said that Junghwan is living happily with another girl and is LIVING WELL. Remember, he's a FIGHTER PILOT.

I think most of teamJunghwan angry & upset with scriptwriter more with how she/he 'end' Junghwan in the last 2 episode than angry because Junghwan not the husband. He is the lead among the leads but in the end his existent just like Noeul or Jungbong.

For me at least, in present day tell us who's he end up with. Maybe with girl that confess first to him, sometime man like Junghwan need 'brave' girl.

0

I thought hyeri was crying because of that particular scene? Not because they won't end up together hehehe I'm afraid your statement would create misunderstandings to people
i think everyone no matter what their team is would be crying seeing those confession scene. It was just so bitter, realistic, and beautiful, true to Junghwan's personality. If only he had done it earlier :( that scene just gives me a closure on Junghwan as a character and solidify my love for Ryu Jun Yeol!

If I'm not mistaken, RJY said hyeri cried because it would be the last time for DS character to interact with JH and DS has to let go of JH at that scene, and not only Hyeri cried but also RJY.

To add to my other comment:

I just about cried too! Even the actors knew Deoksun and Junghwan should have been together. If I was there as one of the actors, I would have put up a major protest when finding out Junghwan wasn't the husband. And how about giving Junghwan and the other characters some resolution! I have to let this go. I'm going to scroll up and stare at the pretty some more and hope he is in something again soon.

it's because all junghwan do for deoksun is just too sweet and it slays everyone's heart :''') but from deoksun point of view it makes sense for him to not be the husband, since all the good things he did were not shown to her. I think the actors is neutral though. she cried just because how sad that scene was, not because she want jh to be the husband :(
he may not win deoksun heart but he win all of our hearts :)
I'm team junghwan who is frustrated halfway with his hesitation and have prepared for the upcoming heartbreak since taek was shown as the husband contender, because lots of clues are pointing to him :(( Ignored lots of clues in 1994, and decided to be wiser by looking at them this time and not to cry as much as i did with chilbong hahaha.

but in the end i cry a little bit more :( i can really relate to his personality and love story :((

The translation of his v-app is a mess, so my sister translated it for me. She said:

RJY was crying because he didn't end up being the husband, but he said that he shouldn't be like that, and he had to move on from Jung hwan's heart.

He said hyeri was also crying because of that (since both actors were expecting kiss scene from ep 3), so that her eyes was puffy when the confession scene in ep 18. That scene was the first time they know they won't end up together.

0

If I were Hyeri, I would rooting for JH too :D

Since Jinjoo and No Eul also rooting for JH, and most of us.

I genuinely did not understand what happened there. He was treated as the main character for 18 episodes and then at the end the writers changed their minds? Did the other actor get too famous very fast and had to follow the sponsors wishes or wth...it truly felt like I was watching a different drama. It's like he disappeared into thin air. Made no sense whatsoever.

Pretty sure it was planned--the problem is the execution was all kinds of faily. Ultimately they were more concerned with the narrative conceit of failed first love, whether through self-sabotage (Jung-hwan) or growing out of it (Deok-seon), than with the endgame. Which makes me wonder why they didn't just come out with the husband in the beginning and share the point of the story with us, instead of playing with our expectations and retconning a thematic narrative into this mess at the end. They should have skipped to 1994 faster and spent more time doing post-mortems on both Jung-hwan's and Deok-seon's first loves (and I guess compared them with Taek's coming to fruition?), focused on what tripped Jung-hwan up, and actually allowed us into Deok-seon's head, instead of dithering around with fanservice/dating sim shenanigans and husband game fake outs for ~17 90 minute episodes.

idk, perversely, the one good thing to come out of all this wasted time (about 24 hours worth lol) was that Taek/Deok-seon actually worked--while the drama shoved every other pairing down our throats, it was left on the back burner until well over half way through, allowed to develop organically.

0
10
reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah, I was SO SURE Jung-hwan was the husband, despite being Taekked from what, episode 7?

And yes, Taek/Deok-sun actually worked because they had more than mutual attraction going on, however gradual it was. Like people noted in the recap of the beach episode, he brought out a different side of Deok-sun as a character, which made her more engaging when he was with her. And she in turn got him, without attraction (initially) crossing her wires or putting a constraint on their relationship.

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I had resigned myself to Jung-hwan because he fit the Male Lead box, even if Taek felt like the emotionally honest choice. The team did more wrong than right this time, imo, but at least they came through on the endgame.

I was team Taek from the beginning, because like you said, their relationship seemed the closest and most comfortable, and because Jung-hwan and Deok-seon never got off on the right foot. (and okay, ultimately Taek was just more my type lol). Jung-hwan was fairly compelling by himself, but there just wasn't a relationship there.

1

Yes, my mind was telling me the husband was JH but my heart was rooting for Taek. With each episode, I had more and more hope until I was sure by (ep 17) it was Taekie! Yay!

0

And JH always acted as if liking DS was something to be ashamed of. Taek knew his heart and admitted to the boys his feelings and planned on confessing until he found out that JH liked her too. Taek's sacrifice broke my heart because it was obvious that DS liked him too and he out of all the boys needed her the most. So happy with the way it all turned out.

1

@juniper @monkeyspunk - you know, I rewatched 1997 right before starting 1988 and it was obvious Jung-hwan was written off the Yoon Yoon-jae template (prickly high school boy struggling with his crush on his friend).

But there was one essential difference - YOON-JAE ACTUALLY CONFESSED. Even when Shi-won was dating his brother! And even before that, he'd kissed her.....That kinda makes me a little less inclined to root for Jung-hwan, he just never spoke up/acted to make it clear how he felt.

1

@Pogo. This is why I wish they'd focused more on what tripped Jung-hwan up, rather than wasting half the drama on pseudo-dating shenanigans. We did not need to see them go to McDonald's or all the concerts or ride the bus fifty million times or whatever, and now that the jig is up, I can only look back on that part of the drama as a complete waste of time. I just don't buy it that he hesitated because "bros before hos"--and neither does the drama, based on his monologue about hesitation. But that's the least explicated part of the whole story. Was it a lack of self-confidence? Was he ashamed of his feelings or of Deok-seon? Too immature? Did he think his feelings wouldn't last? Did he get too in his own head? Did he not know what to do once she started giving him positive signals? Did he think Deok-seon would prefer Taek even so?

0

@juniper - I agree, I wish we hadn't spent so much time on Jung-hwan and Deok-sun pseudo-dating/dancing around the point, and instead got a little more of what made everyone tick. Like I find it very believable that Deok-sun grew to see Taek in a new way over the course of the show, but we get so little of them actually in a relationship beyond the bare-bones stuff we got (seriously, even Shi-won and Yoon-jae got more, and their drama had like one-third the time per episode of 1988). This drama would have worked beautifully without the adult versions of our leads, we really didn't have to frame it as that kind of husband-hunting mystery.

But I do count 1988 as a win, largely because of the Ssangmundong community - especially the three ajummas. Forget the husband, those three are now my life goals.

0

As for why Jung-hwan balked at actually letting Deok-sun know he liked her (even before he knew about Sun-woo or Taek), part of it is probably just insecure teenage boyishness, part is probably plain confusion (how to explain this kind of thing to the rest of the gang). I don't think he was ashamed of Deok-sun or of his feelings for her, it just felt like he didn't know what to do with them.

0

yes Taek and Deokson fell for each other naturally, no one had to push Deoson towards Taek for her to develop interest

0

the 90 minute episodes did not revolve around the love line, there were lots of focus on the family and other friends in the neighborhood

I think a lot of the problem with Jung-hwan not being the husband in the end, comes from people expecting the drama to follow typical kdrama formula (prickly boy with a lot of screen time at the start, always gets the girl in the end) rather than looking at what was actually happening in THIS drama (Junghwan never confessing and repeatedly failing to give Deok-sun any clear signals about his feelings even when she liked him back and he could guess at it from her behaviour - not so much as a hug or a kiss there. And then Deok-sun moving on after one too many perceived rejections).

And I also expected the husband to be Jung-hwan, simply based on the fact that Kim Joon-hyuk initially played him with very similar speech and mannerisms to Ryu Joon-yeol's Jung-hwan or Go Kyung-pyo's Sun-woo (and after Sun-woo was out as the husband candidate, everyone guessed it was Jung-hwan). That was a very poorly done bit of directing, and contributed even more to the misunderstanding - viewers can't be blamed for it.

1

Required fields are marked *

Yes to your second paragraph, if we based it on the mannerisms, It couldnt have been Taek, but it was possibly any of the other 3 guys. But, then the husband just kept changing every appearance. I blamed the directing

Required fields are marked *

The problem was that Taek is such a singular personality that he was the only one of the boys who simply didn't fit the way Kim Joo-hyuk was playing him, so once it became clear that Sun-woo wasn't interested in Deok-sun and Dong-ryung had so little screen time, the only plausible fit was Jung-hwan.

But the adult casting in general was faulty - Lee Mi-yeon didn't feel a thing like young Deok-sun at all either.

0

@pogo

The adult scenes irked me because of the casting. Joo Hyuk was fine for me since the reveal didn't happen yet (although I was so sure he was Jung Hwan) but Lee Mi Yeon was IMO a miscast or she waa juat given really bad directions. I know she was there because it's meta.

0

lol, yes, Pogo and fei. Thank you guys for saying it. The adults came off as a bunch of bourgeois douchebags to me lol.

0

@fei - I blame the direction, Kim Joo-hyuk and Lee Mi-yeon were apparently told nothing more than to behave the way they thought an old married couple would, without knowing who he was playing/how that might change their dynamic, or at least knowing to make it a little more ambiguous. That's a fail right there.

0

Yep. Exactly this. People expected it, and it didn't happen so some got pissed off. Future JH to start was DID act like JH, but there are also a dozen things that don't fit him as the drama went on. Hell, not just JH it could have been DR too. They bicker too.

There's a video I saw a couple days ago of the couples from DS pov from episode 9-18 and it makes it obvious it would end with Taek. He was always her #1 priority, even while crushing on JH in face. She'd rather sit with him than go have lunch with Junghwan. Or she'd rather stay at the beach with him than go home with Junghwan after DR ran away. These actions are not those of a girl hopelessly in love with someone.

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

And i agree the adult actors were all kinds of fail. DS never fit either like you said. The future husband in the first couple episodes is who really caused a lot of hurt feelings though in the end.

0

Disagree - DS acted more like a mother-hen to Taek.

When the ajummas (including DS's mother) would joke about DS marrying Taek, she would be in on the joke, not taking it seriously at all.

When Taek started to assert himself (being seen as a "man", instead of a friend) - that's when DS started to change in how she viewed Taek.

Frankly, think DS could have ended up w/ SW (if he had liked her instead of Bora) or JH.

0

@bd5. I don't think you guys disagree? I think she's saying that DS's feelings for Jung-hwan and Seon-woo weren't really love, yet, based on the fact that she always preferred spending time with Taek. She just wanted someone to like her, and I agree, if Seon-woo had liked her back, or Jung-hwan had actually confessed or cleared up some of her misunderstandings, her feelings could have grown while dating them and she could have ended up married to either of them. I do think an insecure girl like her is better off with someone who openly values and needs her, so I think it's for the best that she ended up with Taek.

1

the 2016 scenes were a waste of air time, even though I don't think 2016 husband acted or looked like Junghwan it should have been obvious to the writer that shippers will see what they want.
I also don't think JH was DS's first love at all. By that logic then Sunwoo was her first love cause she liked them both for the same reason, because her friends told her they liked her. DS's first love was Taek, she definitely showed feelings towards him in 1989 even before the kiss, she swooned when he carried her and she didn't have the same reaction when DR carried her.
And yes their were clues pointed towards Taek as early as episode 2 but once fans fell for Junghwan they ignored all other evidence.

0

I did marathon for 3 days. In my opinion, they shouldn't have shown the husband. The beginning and the ending are totally different character. When the husband showed up on ep. 2, he was acted like JH (messy hair, unbottoned cardigan, etc). At the end of episode, he acted like Taek (preppy looking, neat hair, etc).
If they didn't show the husband, we wouldn't be so pissed like this. But anyway.. I am on team Taekki, I thought DS's husband is JH, until I read an article when I was on ep. 17 about kissing scene between PBG and Hyeri.

I will be disappointed if DS ends up with JH. I dont think she has shown that she likes him. I felt like it was her friends who put the ideas on her head, so she ends up looking forward for JH to date her. But it was Taek who makes her realize that her heart flutters ever since he carried her across the soccer field.

Pogo I see a lot of people commenting on Junghwan never acting on his feelings or showing interest but if u think about it, it was his showing interest that sparked a returning interest from Deoksun.. he got her the pink gloves even without being the Secret santa, he ran to meet her friends, he even managed to sneak in a date with Deoksun all alone, with a couple picture to boot! He only started hesitating when he came to know of Taek's feelings, till then he WAS taking (tiny) steps.. his problem was Taek's timing in confession.

And Taek (whom I love btw) had better luck I would say because, his actions seem more open to us (viewers) when he confesses to his friends, when he openly adores Deoksun, or shows his manly side to her, but to Deoksun, from her POV, she didn't really notice any romantic interest, unlike when she noticed Junghwan's.. and Taek also didn't confess once he knew about Junghwan's feelings, yet only Junghwan gets grief about 'not cpnfessing'.. in fact, if you think about it, he got lucky because Deoksun was awake during a kiss that he thought was a dream.. otherwise he also wouldn't have confessed for much longer.. so basically I don't get how people say Taek was proactive and Junghwan was not.. I feel sorrier in Junghwan's case because, due to timing, just when Deoksun started showing interest, he had to get detached and that has a more negative impact than if she had never realised his interest (which was the case with Taek's interest ) to be continued...

...continued
Also, while I do agree that Deoksun+Taek make a super cute, super healthy couple, I didn't read her 'I didn't want it to change our friendship' as evidence of romantic interest.. all the kids treat Taek a bit differently, like he is fragile and to be taken care of.. it felt like Deoksun could consider dating others without thought of ramifications because a: she could see it go long term or b: she thinks they can handle the fallout of a break up as adults.. with Taek she was more careful about hurt feelings.. Also she got angry when SW and JW (apparently) rejected her but with Taek, I dunno, all these kids treat him like some God?, so she might not have pursued due to his career, nature etc, I dunno how to put it, it's like if u truly didn't consider someone romantically it's easier to take the disappointment or even not be disappointed greatly? That's how it felt, like, 'is Taek a romantic candidate, ok I am thinking, ok maybe I am excited, oh wait right this is normal just what I expected my sweet friend Taek' something like this.

So ultimately, the one small problem I have with Taek-Deoksun is the lack of romantic chemistry/tension.. they have great chemistry as friends, buddies, but that spark that u see in a lotta buddies-turned-couples like 9 end 2 outs, or reply 97, that's kinda miss in, even though Taek is individually hot.. (sorry about the long meandering rambling post!)

bluntly put, WE can read Jung-hwan's actions as super obvious evidence of his interest in Deok-sun, but Deok-sun can't read his mind.

The meetup with her friends, the pink gloves, the umbrella, pretty much every single gesture he gave her apart from the veto on her blind date (and even that and the concert date, Deok-sun had to push him hard for), was all stuff he hid under cover of gruffness and tried his hardest not to let on that he actually cared about her that way - in his own words, he wanted HER to think about why he was out with the umbrella, he wasn't going to tell her himself. And when he didn't speak up to clear the pink shirt misunderstanding or even afterwards.... Deok-sun was basically left thinking he didn't care for her in any special way, if he could let his brother have a present she picked out specially for him.

Taek on the other hand, put his confession on hold when he figured out Jung-hwan liked Deok-sun, but unlike Jung-hwan he didn't bother hiding the fact that he adored Deok-sun in general - if you notice, HE is the one who initiates all of their moments, whether it was the initial hug when she entered his room, the suggested movie date (which was an anticlimax because he fell asleep), or just letting her register him as a man, without bothering to hide it behind a fog of denial like Jung-hwan.

Like I said, I'd ordinarily root for Jung-hwan because he's Yoon Yoon-jae redux/mk. 2.0, but Yoon-jae, despite all his prickliness and attempts to cover up his own feelings, did confess them to Shi-won even when she was dating his hyung. After that, I'm a lot less inclined to cut Jung-hwan so much slack for not saying anything even when he knew or could guess that Deok-sun did like him at one point.

1

the difference between Taek and Junghwan is that Taek was openly nice to her, and never hid his feelings, even without confessing he was still nicer to her than Junghwan

Jungwhan was not a main character for 18 episodes, there are plenty of episodes where he was not heavily featured

I believe that you did not watch 1988. JH was the main actor from 1~18 episodes. Please count his scens numbers. Yes the direct apparently wanted to fade him down from ep 13 since his fas and media were too much focusing DS&JH. But his family and JH was in the center of the drama. Who can say that JH is not the main??

If Junghwan was the main character every episode why are his fans complaining that he wasn't featured enough post episode 12?

I'm OK with him not being the husband because I never really got invested with the love triangle but not giving his character some kind of resolution really posed me off. And he wasn't just him, what about Dong Ryong? I thought it was supposed to be about family and the Samggeong 5.

DR opened a restaurant and was doing well, they also said he had a girlfriend in 1994. It is not unreasonable to assume he is still in the restaurant business and married

Doesn't have what one would consider the typical, classic features, but talent can go a long way in making someone attractive (and he has gobs of acting talent).

Gong-yoo is also someone who isn't classically handsome either, but his talent is what makes him a leading man.

He was really my favorite character on Reply.

I already read the recaps but haven't watched the last 2 episodes of R1998, can anyone clarify a few things:

After his 'joke confession', was there ever a follow up where JH and DS talked about it? It seems weird that she just took it at face value and they didn't talk about it further.

So, he started liking DS during the Olympics and not in the alleyway scene?

What was the resolution for his character? Was the wedding his last appearance on the show? (Minus the 88 throwback)

I think she really took it as a joke.. I don't see any follow up on deoksun feelings since the pink shirt incident. her feelings for junghwan has already gone in episode 15, so in order to make things not awkward he makes it as a joke, and she jst accept it.

I thought the look on her face was sad acceptance - she knew the confession was real, but that ship had sailed long ago so she couldn't return his feelings. The best she could do for him was hear him out at last, even if he was going to protect himself by trying to pass it off as a joke.

Totally agree with you pogo. I think he could tell by her actions and reaction to his confession that her heart was with Taek. I think she was relieved when he played it off as a joke.

0

I agree, she gave up on Junghwan and moved on back in 1989

0

She didn't take it seriously. She was already into Taek by that time. I mean seriously, for her this was stuff from years ago. In 1989 she was over him and feeling something for Taek. In 1994, I doubt she gave it a second thought.

I think the resolution of his character was giving up on his first love, coming to terms with that, and giving Taek the go-ahead.
Then of course becoming the loving second daughter of the family. I know people wanted more of him, but I thought he pretty much had a good end/came full circle. I really wouldn't have wanted him to meet some random girl at the end.

I agree, Junghwan had his resolution. He matured as a character, learned not to hesitate and express his feelings in his own way for his family. Not getting a last minute love interest doesn't mean he didn't get story line in episode 19-20.

Hi 61717,

there wasn't a follow up scene with just the two of them and after watching the episodes with subs there really was no need for that. I think he confessed to really end his feelings.

It wasn't really shown when he started to like her but one flashback was right when she had still been training with her picket. So I assume that he already liked her before the Olympics.

Unfortunately his resolution wasn't part of the finale, but I want to believe that he lived happily ever after.

Ahhhh!!! Jung pal ah!!

He was my favorite character on the show (besides the awesome Cheetah, of course) and I'm still sad with how his character was handled after his 'fate and timing' monologue. I was so heartbroken for him when he was driving as fast as he could to get to Deok Sun and was late by just a few seconds.

The monologue made me love his character more because he was aware of his own mistakes and blamed himself for hesitating, he was right that it wasn't because of fate or timing that he got his heart broken. But his confession, a long overdue one, was so perfect that I hated how he took it back as a joke to cover himself.

If it was any other actor who portrayed Kim Jung Hwan, I probably wouldn't have been as heart broken as I am for his character because I really loved Jung Hwan despite how frustrating he was in terms of romance. But RHJ nailed every scene of his as a thoughtful, loyal and lovable friend, brother and son.

You know, I wouldn't have minded whoever the husband was in 1988 because no matter who it was, we got some glorious family moments along the way. And one of my favourite Jung-hwan moments was him awkwardly handing his mother her wedding bouquet in ep 19. It was just adorable, and made me a little weepy.

I was so sure he was the future hubby because he matched with Kim Joo Hyuk so much but on hind sight most of the clues were pointing to Taek. The smoking one was a specially big clue, I really hoped there was a scene where JungHwann was shown smoking his mom's cigs but nada. And, Deoksun choose the pink mittens instead of the pink gloves earlier in the series.

I didn't really plan on watching 88 because I got tired of 94 and the tedious husband trolling but PD 'promised' no more husband hunt on 88 only to take it back. That should've kept me from watching but I still did and got trolled again.

And, since they're planning on making another one, year 78 I think, if there's another husband trolling, I know what to look for. I've read it before here, on recaps, but didn't believe it. A commenter posted about the flashbacks on the end of each of the second episodes and it always points to the husband. Turns out, she/he was right.

Sorry, for my english. Not a native speaker.

I was sick the last week and marathoned this drama.

Have to say that the fact it was Taek at the end was obvious to me given the dialogue of the adults version of the characters. The mystery was not as well kept as it was in Reply/Answer Me 1994. Not that this is any consolation for those on the Jung Pal ship. I would have liked to see some resolution for his character though.

Good to see that he will be branching out to other things and characters now.

It's seriously interesting I've been seeing this a lot. People who marathon it can see a Taek end more clearly. I was totally team JH for awhile, but it was so stagnant, but I recognize the Taek end when DS got over her anger at JH for not wearing the shirt. The kiss of death is indifference, and those were pretty much her feelings towards him during the end of 1989.

the pink shirt misunderstanding and lack of clarification was the end of the Junghwan ship, his fans just couldn't except it

I think it is easier to recognize all the signs pointing towards Taek if you marathon. A lot of us who watched live got distracted by the fandom focus on Junghwan and insistence that he was the husband. Some of the shippers don't even seem to remember all the scenes Taek had with Deokson because they are so focused on Junghwan.
