News bites: January 23, 2016

Yoon Shi-yoon

  • Hooray! Yoon Shi-yoon (Prime Minister and I) will be released from military service (in the Marine Corps, no less) on January 27. His contract with his current agency, Taxi Entertainment, is expiring and the press is anticipating that he’ll branch off on his own. While I might side-eye others starting up their own agency, I’m sure Yoon will do just fine — now if he’d only hurry and select a new project! [Joongang]
  • I just can’t see these two together right now, but maybe the film will be a pleasant surprise? Gong Hyo-jin (The Producers) has agreed to play the wife of Lee Byung-heon in Single Rider. In the suspense drama, Lee’s a father living alone in Korea to support his family overseas, while Gong’s in Australia to raise and educate their son. When Lee’s on the verge of losing everything, he’ll travel to Oz to meet his family. The movie will be distributed by Warner Brothers. [Osen]

  • Gong Hyo-jin, Lee Byung-heon

  • Con Artists 2 (or Technicians 2) has been greenlit with a 15-billion won budget financed by Alibaba Pictures, and production is currently negotiating with Kim Woo-bin, Go Chang-seok and Lee Hyun-woo to reprise their characters. For the second edition, director Park Hong-soo (Commitment) will take the helm. [MBN]
  • This sounds fun and a little out-of-the-norm for Seo In-gook (I Remember You), but it’s being labeled an in-between project for him before he starts work on Police Unit 38. He and Kim Ji-won (Hidden Identity) are starring in a web drama together called Romance Island, a fantasy romance in the vein of You From Another Star and Secret Garden. It will air on Sohu.com in China. The pair’s upcoming projects share something in common: Police Unit 38 will be entirely pre-produced, while Kim Ji-won’s pre-produced Descended From the Sun airs next month. [Joongang]

  • Seo In-gook, Kim Ji-won

  • You can count CBS’s Criminal Minds among the group of American shows (1, 2) being remade for Korean TV. The rights were snapped up by Taewon Entertainment (Sweet Savage Family, IRIS) and the remake will air late this year on SBS. [DongA]
  • Congrats to the cast and crew of Cheese in the Trap — they’ve earned a trip to Phuket, Thailand as a result of their high ratings. (It’s a popular destination for tvN; some of the Answer Me 1988 cast just returned from their own Phuket vacation, while the rest were kidnapped on the way back.) The show averaged 6.4% viewership ratings this past week, and those involved with the show will head off for their well-earned break in early February (filming could wrap as early as this week). [DongA]

  • Joo Jin-mo, Ahn Jae-hong

  • Joo Jin-mo (Beloved Eun-dong) is positively considering playing a villain in manhwa adaptation King’s Case Files. Lee Seon-kyun’s been attached to play the king for some time, and while we previously heard that Yoo Yeon-seok might play his sidekick, another Answer Me alum might be replacing him. In recent reports, Ahn Jae-hong (Jung-bong Oppa) has been confirmed as Lee’s accomplice. [Star News, News 1]
  • Musudan, the military film starring Lee Jia (Thrice Married Woman), hits theaters February 26. About the 24 hours following an incident in the DMZ, Kim Min-joon (Hidden Identity), Do Ji-han and Park Yoo-hwan round out the cast. [TV Report]

  • Lee Jia, Ryu Soo-young

  • Kang So-ra has confirmed Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho (yay!), and the show has its second leads in Ryu Soo-young (Strange Daughter-in-Law) and Park Sol-mi (Dear You), the latter in her first role since her 2014 wedding. Ryu’s character is a hotshot prosecutor who competes with Jo Deul-ho (Park Shin-yang) on everything from households to women. The webtoon adaptation follows the conclusion of Moorim School in March on KBS. [TV Report]
  • Heirs writer Kim Eun-sook has been tasked with penning the Chinese film remake of the 2013 Korean drama. It’s comical how the Chinese drama Billion Dollar Inheritors (basically, Heirs) was first thought of as an Heirs remake, but due to an uproar from zealous Chinese fans, the show and its star, Choi Siwon, quickly had to clarify that the concept for Chinese Heirs had been in motion before the Korean show, and that the plot was completely different. Billion Dollar Inheritors concluded in 2014, but some members of the press are still confused, writing as if the Chinese drama was part of Heirs’ pan-Asian popularity, which prompted alternative sources to quickly issue statements that Heirs had never before been remade in China and that this film would be the first official remake. [Xports News, TV Report]

It's too bad Yee Yeon-seok won't be playing as Lee Seon-kyun's sidekick. I was looking forward to that. Hope this new kid Anh Jae-hong is good. Never seen him in anything yet; will be marathoning Reply 88 soon. But if Jo Jin-moo does come on board this movie should be awesome.

Ahn Jae-hong's character was probably my favorite part of AM88, kid has daebak comedic timing. I love the idea of him in the eunuch role for King's Case Files and would be thrilled if they cast him instead of a pretty boy actor.

He's good. He got the funniest role in Reply 1988 but I was converted(become a fan) after watching an ad he starred with another cast of Reply 1988. He has perfectly embodied his character in Reply 1988 in this advertisement.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. The way serial killers have been profiled in Korean dramas so far does not take into account the FBI process at all

Seo In Guk and Kim Ji Won? yeees! Kim Ji Won is so amazingly talented and it hurts to see her not land big roles when Jin Se Yeon gets these huge prime-time drama roles easily with less than 1/4 of her talent.
Ji Won is already shining the most in the DOTS teasers

Actually Jin Se Yeon isn't THAT bad, I just finished watching High-end crush and she was actually good there.
Even if you don't agree, why are you bashing her? It isn't like we don't have Suzy or UEE on our screens.
YOU WILL BE SHOCKED but celebrity's popularity isn't based only on there acting skills so no reason to whine or make other person feel bad....

sorry but Uee doesn't deserve to be compared to Jin Se-yeon and Suzy, at least she can act. Usually.

and I really don't understand the mentality that execrable actors should be exempt from criticism of their abilities.

It's a job, they get paid for it, if they can't perform up to scratch they will get bitched out like anyone else, and the nature of their job means it will be done publicly.

Yeah, been waiting for Ji Won to get her big break. Hopefully she manages to land a good leading role this year.

Haha yes I would lump Jin Se Yeon together with Suzy & Uee acting-wise.

Kim Ji Won would be more like Kang Sora & Kim So Eun. The latter two already had lead roles, soon would be Kim Ji Won.

Required fields are marked *

my thoughts exactly. Not sure why Jin Se-yeon lands lead roles anyway, it certainly isn't for talent and it's not like she's well-beloved or popular among Korean viewers for other things like Suzy (who's also really bad, but gets cast in things because of endorsement money - however flawed a funding system that is).

Seo In-gook and Kim Ji-won together is pretty much a dream pairing for me, shame it's only a web drama (give that girl a full-length drama lead role already!)

Yoon Shi-yoon!!!!! I have loved him so much ever since Barefoot Friends and Flower Boy Next Door. He has such a humble and simple personality. Plus he loves books. Who doesn't love a boy who loves books? Plus he earned my undying admiration by quietly joining the marines, even though in Barefoot Friends he showed us how much he was afraid of water before starting the diving episodes. I'll watch anything he comes up with.

Maybe Yoon Shi-yoon comeback project will be God of Noddles? After being Baker King he can be the God of Noodles, right? I don't know the story but I wish actors like him and Park Ki Woong (who will leave the army soon) have the chance to do interesting dramas in 2016.

Lee Byung-hun and Gong Hyo-jin? I could actually really dig this, they're both good actors and I think they'd make an interesting pair onscreen (this doesn't smell like a typical romantic storyline anyway).

And YAY to Seo In-gook and Kim Ji-won, I already call it - they're going to be glorious together. Shame it's only a web drama though, why could this not have been an actual drama? (and someone give that girl a lead role in something good already!)

also, yay for Yoon Shi-yoon coming back. I loved him as panda-ears Enrique in Flower Boy Next Door, it'll be good to see what he does next.

Wait, they learned nothing from the criticism hauled at the heirs writer and now for the movie remake,a chance to right the wrongs,go deeper than TV would allow and just....do something better but they still want said writer to pen the film? Anyway hope she's heard the complains and learned a thing or two but with her you never know. She might probably take deeper/darker as an opportuinity for more forceful wristgrabs and this time, bonafide slamming against the wall.
