Mrs. Cop 2: Kim Hee-ae out, Kim Sung-ryung in
by girlfriday
Well this is a shake-up. I’m not actually all that surprised that Kim Hee-ae turned down the second season of SBS crime drama Mrs. Cop — she’s an in-demand star and doesn’t have a lot to gain from playing the same character twice (especially when the SBS Drama Awards failed to recognize her performance, which in hindsight seems quite dumb of them). But I AM surprised that they’re going ahead with Season 2 anyway, with a whole new badass ajumma detective to play the titular Mrs. Cop. The story has been changed and Kim Sung-ryung (Queen’s Flower) has been confirmed for what will now be a spinoff series.
It’s too bad that Kim Hee-ae couldn’t reprise her role if they were going forward with the second season anyway, but Kim Sung-ryung totally fits the bill as a hot-blooded, cool-headed ajumma cop. The 1988 Miss Korea has had a long and varied career in dramaland in everything from sageuk to rom-com to thriller to weekend family shows, and can hold her own as a headliner. I especially like her when she’s funny, but she’ll be great at hard-hitting action too.
The spinoff season will actually maintain much of the original cast, but bring in Kim Sung-ryung as their new team leader. She’ll play Go Yoon-jung, a New York ajumma with FBI training. Kim Hee-ae’s character will be on leave for personal reasons (I’m sure they’ll write in something heartwarming about her wanting to be a good mom to her daughter), and Kim Sung-ryung’s character will be brought in to replace her. I wonder where that leaves the loveline with Kim Min-jong, but I guess we’ll find out when they announce who else is staying or going.
The casting change certainly affects everything from story lines to supporting cast, and stops the drama from becoming a true sequel in the way that SBS was originally envisioning. I’m not sure that I want Korean dramas to go that route anyway, since I’m a big fan of the single-season format; if it’s successful, then maybe Mrs. Cop will build a crime procedural franchise that can plug in a different cast year to year. Anything to create more strong leading roles for women in television is a good thing in my book.
Mrs. Cop 2 will follow I Have a Lover on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in March.

I LOVED her in that role. Her relationship with her mute housekeeper was more interesting than anything else going on in that show.

They can ditch the loveline and get Kim Mi-kyung/Hacker ajumma in this. (Sorry, Kim Min-jong!)
I shipped KSR and KMK friendship in Heirs so much. They can be funny even if the situation is serious. :'D

maybe instead of love -line, they could make them in-laws who disagree and argue about everything yet have to be effective at work. just imagine yelling" We will NOT have pink swans! and who the hell told you we´ll be paying for it?" in the middle of an arrest...

yeah, I actually don't mind this - Kim Hee-ae brought home the ratings and held the show together, she doesn't have to prove anything by doing a second season. And Kim Sung-ryung can be really good, so I'm fine with the replacement.

one of the WORST dramas for plot holes and god awful police procedures I've seen and Kdrama is rife with examples. She takes a child to investigate a sighting of a serial killer. The informant is positive and reliable the killer is there. He is and murders the child. In ANY country her ass would be fired and she would be up for charges as an accessory and the parents would be suing her and the department...but nothing...not a word said. She and her partner are chasing said serial killer who has repeatedly evaded capture, violently murdered and maimed several people, her partner calls in that he has found him and is going to apprehend and she does what? Sits on her ass to REST!?? Doesn't even bother to call in back up though dozens of cops are in the area, and guess what happens...don't need to? In the police car, they get a call to go to the scene and the girl in the back seat PULLS HER GUN, POINTS IT TOWARDS THE GUY IN THE FRONT SEAT TO SEE IF IT'S LOADED! OMG! Not even a novice gun handler is that stupid. And it went on and on. Every single episode we were rolling our eyes over yet another idiotic mistake. And yet. I watched the whole darn thing. Because, the performances were actually good! I pray they get a decent writer for this one and plug those darn holes.

That was the point I stopped watching I think... though I did continue reading the recaps, which made me regret nothing.
Find it very odd indeed that out of all dramas they choosing to give a second season to, they've picked this one!

That's when I stopped as well, alua. It made me soooo angry. She basically killed the child with her irresponsibility.
And I wasn't able to even read the recaps.

They need actual police and doctors to review scripts as consultants. I have seen so much terrible gun handling in dramas you wonder if the police are even trained. It is basic police academy training to learn how to control your weapon during an apprehension. Any layperson who has watched a few police series has basic knowledge about how trained cops behave. Yes, it is fiction and we are asked to suspend our disbelief, but it just makes the "professionals" appear incompetent.

The first three episodes of this show were as dumb as anything I've ever seen in a drama (Korean and otherwise). I have no explanation for why I picked it back up after skipping 4-5 episodes. Well, maybe it was the very cute second leads. It was nice to see that girl from Secret get to let loose and have a little fun after all the angst in that show.

I loved her in "The Heirs" because she was just fabulous and rocked hot pink lipstick like it was nobody's business.
Yes, I care about the fashion, the hair and the makeup because I aim to one day be rich and fabulous.
I didn't watch the first one, but she was great in "The Heirs" and I'm sure she'll do a fantastic job.

I didn't recognise her as Kim Tan's mum! She was one of the few good things about that drama.
But I couldn't finish the first Mrs Cop, doubt I can sit through a sequel with the same writer and co.

Aw, I like her. She's been decent-good in everything I've seen her in, especially Age of Warriors and Ja Myung Go, and she was the only remotely watchable person in Heirs. I mean, she's no Kim Hee-ae, but I wish she could have gotten the lead in a better project.

SBS failed to recognize many of the good performances on their drama, not only her. Yeon Jeong-Hun comes to mind.
I too, generally do not like repeats to season 2, and more, and I have not watched season 1 of Mrs. Cop. But I love Kim Sung-ryung, so I will certainly give it a try. Why could they have not just done a new crime series with her, instead of Season 2? I wonder...
Will the writer/PD team stay the same?

oooh i like her, and it'll be a great change to see her tackling something as badassery as an ajumma cop. it's not an image we've seen from her before. i do agree that she can be so funny in comic roles, but i can totally see her doing something like this as well.
that's right, how come kim hee-ae didn't win anything from mrs. cop?! wasn't this the same broadcaster that gave us yong-pal? you mean they awarded yong-pal actors over her?? jesus.

I didnt finished mrs cop, since its story was kinda....
Don't know much about Kim Hee Ae actually, her only work that I watched was Midas. Is she A-lister actress?
But.. I am excited to see Kim Tan's omma again. ;D So i maybe will give this a try, even I will suffer serious withdrawal from I Have A Lover later. :(

ooo okey. did some research on her. Well, she was one of the top star, unfortunately i just knew bout her.
I think she turned down any award. I guess so. Who knows, maybe now she is not at the stage to care so much awards since she got many awards before in her younger days. It might be possible, in my state there was one top singer, who in every award she was in, she will win. After several years, she declined any awards, since she wants to give other singers to shine as well.

SBS really didn't give appreciation for other shows even though it has pretty high ratings. take example Kim Rae Won, Suh Ae, Kim Hee Ae. They all made SBS ratings increasing slow but sure from the beginning of year.
I like this lady. Kim Sung Ryung is very classy and stylist.

Mrs Cop made me go off Kim Hee-ae. That character was written HORRIBLY and imo the best part of the show was Sohn Ho-joon and Lee Da-hee's storyline, which was all that kept the show watchable. I'd cheer a spinoff that gave them the primary roles. I do adore Kim Sung-ryung, but I'm afraid they'll make a dog's dinner of her as they did Kim Hee-ae. There was so much wrong with the 'Mrs Cop' part of Mrs Cop!

I shipped Kim Hee-ae with Kim Min-jong so hard. My heart broke to bits when their loveline didn't push thru. I love Kim Sung-ryung so much. She bedazzles. Soooo gorgeous.
So I won't mind if Kim Sung-ryung pushes the chemistry to the roofs with Kim Min-jong. Maybe they're the "Kim Couple" I've been longing for.
