MBC’s Tyrant gets renamed Monster, still looking for a leading lady

The MBC project formerly known as Tyrant has opted for a name change, and is now going by Monster (it’s the English word transliterated into Korean, not a Korean word meaning monster). I don’t think Monster’s a bad title for a drama, but it does kinda seem to me to be one step down on the interesting scale, doesn’t it?

Hwang Jung-eum (She Was Pretty) is still in contention for the lead, and as of yet she’s the only name being floated as a casting possibility. (She did just announce her plans to marry at the end of next month, which may delay her plans to return to work quite so quickly… but on the other hand, Hwang Jung-eum is an actress who likes to cram her schedule from end to end with drama after drama, so maybe a little thing like a wedding and newlywed life won’t keep her from jumping into another project.)

The drama is described as the story of one man’s revenge against an irrational world, as he sets out to challenge the privilege and authority of society’s top 0.001%, revealing their ugly true faces. He’s a big proponent of the philosophy of noblesse oblige (that those with privilege carry an obligation to treat those less fortunate with generosity), which makes him a populist against the corrupted elite, which is certainly a popular motif in dramaland these days. I’d thought Tyrant was a nicely evocative title that works with that premise, but maybe we’ll see that Monster is a better fit.

The writer is a much bigger draw for me than the director, since Jang Young-chul was the writer of History of the Salaryman, Giant, and Incarnation of Money (which explains the Hwang Jung-eum connection, since she was in the latter two), while PD Joo Sang-woo has worked on a number of weekend dramas, including Legendary Witches and Hundred Year Inheritance.

Monster will follow the 50-episode run of current Monday-Tuesday series Dazzling Temptation with a 50-episode run of its own beginning in April.

50 episodes is a huge canvas to fill. Giant was up to the task. HOTS was good but barely over 20 episodes. IOM was 20+ and was the weaker of the three. Dazzling Temptation isn't really worthy of 50 episodes.

With any luck the writer can pen something comparable to Giant.

Why aren't they disclosing the male leads. Something is fishy. Maybe the male lead is mediocre and they know he won't be able to carry the drama.

Somehow, it seems like the plot will be dragging. And why are they taking such a long time to cast leads? Are they trying to start filming few days before the premiere?

I hope this drama lives up to expectation, the plot -revenge- doesn't interest me. I'll keep an eye on it tho.

Liked tyrant better too. Oddly it gave me Resident Evil vibes more than its intended meaning as a despotic ruler (the tyrant is the megazombie you have to fight at the end of the first couple of games), so maybe Monster will work out? It is a major bummer that Yoo In-sik won't be involved--imo he was the most important ingredient for the success of Giant and History of the Salaryman, and the only truly functioning part of Incarnation of Money.

50 episodes. That means I won't watch it as it's simply too exhausting to watch such long dramas.

I wish Hwang Jung Eum takes this role however for the same reasons. It'll keep her away from other dramas I might watch for at least a year which is a great thing.

It surprised me they didn't announce leading man since it's totally male centric drama just like Goodbye Mr. Black which announce leading lady first.

Whoever getting the role, I hope he's manly and has rough looks not kinda flower boy type and good at melo and action.

I never understood why Hwang Jung Eum got so popular. Her constant over-the-top shouting and exaggerated facial expressions in Kill Me Heal Me wore me out fast. Thank god there's Ji Sung to make me finish watching KMHM. It was a good drama, but I just wish the female lead was someone more likable. (And it was weird to see her calling Park Seo Joon oppa because he looks significantly younger. Nvm.)

She is the most popular actress in 2015 in SK simply because she was the one who gave a true entertainment to the viewers through her dramas and her roles are unforgettable. The OTT acting that many inetizens complain are the the ones the Korean audiences like that's why they chose her as actress of the year.We are just side spectators, and she gave what her audience like, a cake with icing on top.We need not complain.

Kaylie ~

She can be over the top in some roles.

Her roles in Giant and Secret are on the money though.

Yes, she has loud voice sometimes, but she just grows on you.

I first saw her in the drama Can You Hear My Heart and I don't recall her being loud, over the top or larger than life, so to speak. That role didn't call for those particular traits and she went on to deliver a less energetic character. She was quite good actually.

Hwang Jung-eum is a good actress but I think she should take a break in this one. If the male lead is LSG , she should, because they don't "fit"together. She "fits"more with Joo Won. Although I prefer Lee Seung Gi for this drama, I beleive He can do a great job, but not with Hwang Jung-eum as his partner. I believe Ha Ji Won, would be better of a choice here. She is awesome acting in rom com, action, but this one, a more strong character tipe, ahh, She would be awesome( and if Seung Gi is the male lead, they are awesome together). Hope the best for Hwang Jung-eum but still believe She should take a break on this one.

I agree. Talent plus looks (plus manly, for a change). But...are we asking too much after EK's fiasco?

Joo Sang-wook! Joo Sang-wook! Joo Sang-wook! I know it's not likely especially because he's headlining another 50 ep drama lol.

I like a good revenge melo, but fifty eps is a bit much, even for me. I'll have to see who is cast to decide.

Why are weekday dramas becoming longer and longer? Its so off-putting.

Gone are the days I used to have tons of dramas piled up to watch. 3 Mon-Tues dramas, 3 Wed-thurs dramas. Now these long draggy dramas are making their way.

And netizen comments reflect that they find the plot cancerous and draggy. So why are they still doing it?

Thank god CITT exists. Otherwise I wouldn't have anything to watch -_-
