Choi Min-soo offered role of King Sukjong in Jackpot

Yaaaaassss. Choi Min-soo (Pride and Prejudice) would make an awesome King Sukjong, and he’s positively considering the role for SBS’s upcoming “faction” (fact + fiction, which is to say, totally fictionalized history) sageuk drama Jackpot. This makes sense because he starred in writer Kwon Soon-gyu’s 2011’s action sageuk drama Warrior Baek Dong-soo, but also because he’s an awesome actor who would act the hell out of the part.

Set in the later Joseon era, Jackpot centers around a young man (Jang Geun-seok) described as a prince of misfortune; he’s of royal blood but made to live among the lowest class and becomes the best gambler of his time. He goes up against the golden prince Yeongjo, son of Sukjong and born with everything given to him, battling it out over love, fate, and the throne. The offer for Yeongjo is currently out to Yeo Jin-gu (Orange Maramalade).

If the casting stars align on this project, that would make Choi Min-soo the father of Yeo Jin-gu, with Yoon Jin-seo (Girl Who Sees Smells) playing Yeongjo’s mother, royal consort Choi sukbin, in a femme fatale twist on the traditional interpretation of her character. Sukjong’s reign was famously beset with strife over his wives (given that he deposed one queen to make one of his concubines queen, then brought back the first queen and had the usurping queen executed), and in this drama, the character is described as ambitious and cold-hearted.

Jackpot seems to be taking quite a bit of liberty with history, and I almost wish they’d go the Moon Embraces the Sun route in creating a fake king and plopping him down at some vague point in the Joseon era. Although to play devil’s advocate, I admit there’s added excitement when you make Yeo Jin-gu Yeongjo and Choi Min-soo Sukjong, since those are names that carry weight, and sometimes you want to use that to your benefit dramatically.

In any case, we’re promised “fierce charisma” from Choi Min-soo, which is a standard promo article buzzword, except that in Choi Min-soo’s case it’s absolutely what we’d expect. He’s got crazy energy, by which I mean his energy is crazy-good and intense, but also, a little tinged with crazy. In the best of ways, of course.

Jackpot will be the Monday-Tuesday drama to follow Six Flying Dragons, premiering in March.

On the shallow side of things, I bet he'd look really awesome in dragon robes. Way too awesome for Sukjong tbh. Most Joseon kings were not badasses lol.

I was shallow enough to watch him in Warrior Baek but couldn't finish it:(.
I'm waiting for Kim Myung Min's character to die so I can be done with Six Flying Dragons.

In the meantime, Insoo is up to episode 35 (so grateful for viki's subbers). Jeon Hye Bin made the 2nd half exciting so I am going to wait till eps 54 then I'll start from eps 24.

Well, you're way more loyal than I was--I was out of there third week lol. Is it that bad?

The Queen Insoo subbing team are my heroes. They've really sped up lately, too--I check every couple of days and just seeing ten more percent on an episode makes me want to jump up and down lol. I'm waiting until it's complete, and then I am starting with episode 1. I always end up marathoning Jung Ha-yeon's dramas, so it's better that I wait lol. I'm really really excited to see Jeon Hye-bin as Lady Yoon--she was so amazing in The King and I, she's great in sageuk.

Does crowd pleasing ring a bell? It is what we thought it would be. We have weird taste in sageuks anyway. Everyone else is normal haha.

So Queen Seondeok 2.0. I liked Kim Young-hyun when I first started watching sageuk but now I know better. Once you watch your first real sageuk you can't go back lol.

Basically. It's usually by the halfway mark when they know which way the majority of the viewers are leaning towards and then they go that route. You know, like Bidam. Lee Bang-won is the Bidam of SFD.

I thought it might go that way when they cast a pretty boy like Yoo Ah-in to play Lee Bang-won. I'll just keep sitting over here, studying my Korean so that someday I can go watch Yoo Dong-geun do the real thing in Tears of a Dragon.

Yoo Dong-geun is untouchable as Lee Bang-won so it's worth it. I watched it raw and some with subs. I have it all downloaded so I can watch in 5 yrs when my Korean is decent if ever lol. I know we are missing out because no English subs will ever fully convey the full meaning of the original.

I love Kim Young-Chul's Bang-won too but that writer was just focusing on Bang-won the king so I hardly saw the human side of him unlike Jung's Gongmin.

I'm marathoning More Beautiful than a Flower (thanks for recommending it). Kim Myung Min beside being charismatic is pretty hot in it lol. This is going to be a very good weekend.

omg More Beautiful Than a Flower. I'm so glad you like it! It's my favorite Noh Hee-kyung drama (at least of the ones available with English subs). Yeah, it took a while for me to get used to KMM's hair (I'm so used to it being black I guess lol), but when I did I totally fell for him. The character is perfect for him. I shipped him and Mi-soo pretty hard though my favorite pairing was Young-min/Mi-ok.

I actually have an ahjussi crush on Yoo Dong-geun lol. His voice is so awesome. I don't have it downloaded but once my Korean gets good enough (if it ever does), that's number one on my list of untranslated sageuk. (Queen Insoo used to be lol)

Choi Min Soo and Kim Myung Min are my ahjussi crush lol. Choi Min Soo first from Sandglass and Kim Myung Min from Admiral Yi. Not much to do with looks or age, they are just talented and charismatic.

WBDS was all flash and little substance (tho liked CMS in it).

Normally, I'd give something a shot which has CMS and (possibly) Yeo Jin-gu in it, but the writer and the lead have zero appeal for me.

I've been clamouring since Day 1 that they just make this a fictional world ala MoonSun. So much more liberty without getting the historians ruffled. Plus that drama did ridiculously well Ratings wise that they can't even argue audience won't tune in.

But whatever, I'm really starting to get excited for this drama. Other than the writer being as crappy as it ever gets, everyone else can carry their weight and it should be a really well acted one if anything. I'm so in.

Same here. I find her entirely forgettable. She looks like every other actress out there, she's pleasant but her emotional dynamic does not seem that broad. How can someone so dull and inoffensive play the supposed femme fatale at the heart of all the plot movement for this drama? Sorry for all the men in the cast, who seem like they can really bring it. It looks like the writing and the leading lady are going to let them down.

That's the thing that's making me go on-the-fence with this drama.... it's because I loved and still love the story/drama of Dong Yi soooooo much.... but if they are going the "faction" route and make Dong Yi all twisty and evil , then T.T

Also, Han Hyo Joo unni needs to come back to dreamland, like, stat

Different taste people. I actually like the female lead. I wouldn't watch it for many of the current female leads. But for her I would give it a go. Not for the male lead though. Even though he can act.

This ahjusshi back! Pride and Prejudice was a mess, but i stayed for him, even i watched at first for Baek Jin Hee ?

I excited for all casts, but not for the female lead. I have seen her in High Society, but i am in minority who didnt enjoy her in that drama, because it seems like she overdid her character. I also watched her movies but dropped in halfway, not because of her. This girl is OK but not a lead material yet.

Will see if im gonna watch this or not, if it is not a long drama maybe i will watch
