News bites: December 6, 2015

Lee Yuri

  • An offer is out to Lee Yuri (Superdaddy Yeol, Jang Bori Is Here) to lead KBS’s upcoming daily drama, Rose of Betrayal, which will air in the first half of 2016 and take the place of the currently airing It’ll All Be Alright. [Joy News 24]
  • Count Krystal (She’s So Lovable) among those being wooed by China. She’s been cast in Graduation Season, her first Chinese drama, and she recently attended a press conference for the show in Wenzhou. Krystal also begins filming Chinese-Korean movie Biyeon in China next January with EXO’s Lay (both are managed by SM Entertainment). [TV Report]

  • Krystal, Park So-dam

  • Current It Girl Park So-dam was picked out of 600 auditioners to bring the vampire lead Eli to life in the play Let Me In (or Let the Right One In). Based on the bestselling Swedish novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the story was remade into a Swedish movie in 2008, an American film in 2010, and was first adapted for the stage in 2013. This will be the play’s first appearance in Asia, and Joo Jin-mo (Cheo-yong 2, Mask) has also been cast. Let Me In will run from January 21 to February 28 at CJ Towol Theater. Tickets will be offered for sale beginning January 3, 2016. [Herald]
  • The premiere of MBC’s Flower in Prison may be pushed back a couple of months. A source for the show has cited internal delays as the reason, and indicated that another 20-episode drama may follow My Daughter Geum Sa-wol in March instead. Go Soo and Jin Se-yeon weren’t slated to begin filming until February, so it’s possible that whatever may be causing production to stall will clear up by then. [Joongang]

  • Yoo Da-in, Kwon Yul

  • Call me confused this week: Kwon Yul (Let’s Eat 2) and Yoo Da-in (Plus Nine Boys) are confirmed for Jang Nara and Jung Kyung-ho’s One More Happy Ending. I *think* this means that Oh Chang-seok (Twinkle Twinkle My Heart) turned down the drama, because he was being courted for the same role that Kwon Yul was confirmed for less than an hour later: a doctor and close college buddy of Jung’s. At least there’s one spot of clarity: Yoo Inna has confirmed she’s joining the show. One More Happy Ending follows Sweet Savage Family in January on MBC. [Joongang 1, 2, Osen]

  • Jin Kyung, Choi Moo-sung

  • Hmm, maybe Yoo Oh-sung isn’t playing Kim Woo-bin’s father in Lightly, Ardently, after all. The show has added a trio of supporting cast members and has released updated character information: Jin Kyung (Oh My Venus), Jung Sun-kyung (Pretty Man), and Choi Moo-sung (Answer Me 1988) are all confirmed for KBS’s upcoming show. Yoo’s a hotshot prosecutor who was born the second child in a destitute household. By all appearances, he seems like a righteous man, but he can be swayed to compromise. Jung is his wife, a chaebol heiress. Jin is Kim Woo-bin’s mom, and she owns a neighborhood restaurant. She hoped her son would become a public prosecutor, but when he decided to pursue a career in entertainment, she disowned him. Choi’s a man who’s known Jin since they were little kids growing up in the same neighborhood. They run the restaurant together and he’s like an oppa to her, although he’s secretly harbored a love for her since childhood. The show will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays in 2016. [Sports Chosun]
  • I’m not sure how Kim Min-young (Sunny) has been cast as Kim Woo-bin and Suzy’s good friend of ten years in Lightly, Ardently when the two leads were ripped apart in their youth (wouldn’t the close mutual friend have been able to bring them back together?), but we’ll either get a revised character description or learn more when the show airs. [Busan Today]

At first glance, I thought that Kwon Yul was Yeon Woojin. Got too excited too fast lol.

Let the Right One In is an absolutely fantastic and chilling movie, and I thought the American adaptation was pretty well-done too. Let's hope the stage adaptation lives up to it.

Park So-dam's really on fire these days, I think she's a good pick to bring Eli to life.

Yeah, even if I was satisfied with the original and still think it's much better, the American remake managed to justify its existence and add a unique spin on things that did not suck out its soul...unlike certain other Hollywood projects that seem to think it's cool to reappropriate another nation's multi-generational trauma into a star-studded, cliché-ridden cash cow.

I struggled to locate jin kyung in oh my venus, her character was part of the scene where i fast fwd-ed..

I find it disturbing these korean celebrity get easy way casting in chinese drama/show.. They only need to move their mouth n do expression because their mouth are going to be dubbed anyway..

It can't be helped since all the big idol companies are desperate for Chinese money because the Korean industry is so small. Lots of Hallyu idols are swarming but the way things are going they'll only ever be able to get just a few scraps from the market unless they actually learn the language and commit to the industry. It's gonna be Japan all over again.

oh yeah, and the minute there's any political unrest/potential conflict, the China gravy train will dry up just like Japan did.

I've seen more actors than idols cross over to China though. And even if they learn the language they still would be dubbed (and it'd be waste of time for them because what they want is easy, fast cash), but I guess that would endear them to the public.

The best path to a big pay-off for K-actors is to be in a hit TV show or film whether it be a Korean, Chinese or co-production.

If it's a huge hit in China - doesn't matter if it's a non-Chinese production, as that pretty much ensures lucrative endorsement deals.

False rationale. Just like Hollywood stars don't need to learn foreign language to gain local traction, Hallyu stars are popular elsewhere because they are first and foremost popular in Korea. The only reason they're even there in the first place is because the Chinese are obsessed with Korean entertainment. In fact, Korean entertainment is so big in China, the Chinese government have been putting protectionist policies to limit "foreign" television shows from airing on Chinese broadcast stations.

Japan, ironically, still a bigger market for Hallyu than China. Which should tell you something. I think the less Korea associates with China - politically and economically - the better.

If Park So Dam is the It Girl. I think Choi Woo Shik will be like Chun Woo Hee last year where she won the awards left and right. Last counting, CWS won 4th awards as the best rookie for his movie.

Run, Yoori, swim to China if you must, just don't take up one of KBS's trainwrecks. Moorim School already looks confusingly unappealing.

She's pretty good in comic roles, She Was Pretty was just a dud all around with a crap script. She's not as hopeless as some other idol actors.

oops I meant She's So Lovable, NOT She Was Pretty!

but I guess that proves my point - the drama was so unmemorable that I even managed to forget its name. Krystal can at least get the job done, which is more than I can say for some of her idol contemporaries.

How I wish a talented actress like Lee Yoo Ri will not stuck in daily drama only.

I would love to see Lee Yoo Ri in a more active character role, even given how tiny she is. In her Running Man appearance, she grabbed Yoo In Young by the blouse and literally climbed her frame to get to the top of a platform. A rematch would be in order.

Thinking about it, they could do a rematch just as a CF for that yellow top In Young was wearing. It took a lot of punishment and still looked good on her.

'Let the Right One In' was an intense little film, very moving despite its horror plotline. Should make for an interesting play.

I love Let the Right One In, both the original Swedish movie and the novel.

Spoilers if you haven't read the novel.

Funny thing, despite being played by lovely young women Eli isn't really a girl.

Ok so this a rabbit trail, but I finished watching Scarlet Heart and the actress I'd really like seeing as the female lead in the Korean remake is Kang Sora.

The one objection I could see is that she hasn't done sageuk. But I don't think that's necessarily a problem. The character is a time traveler and would have an understandably difficult time initially adapting to the old dialect. And they could use it for humor during her 'death seeking second sister' days. She'd just need to be able to lose her modern speech pattern as the show progresses.

And the actress being discussed that I definitely wouldn't want to see is Ha Ji Won. Mostly because I'm still really ticked at her for how she disrespected the audience by foot acting her role in 7000 Days after the show started to tank.* And how she left her co lead high and dry, even though he had a horribly written character to deal with on top of everything else. Her preening self-importance is more than I can stomach watching right now.

*(The footwear PPL notwithstanding .)
