Lee Hyun-woo goes from idol factory to Moorim School
by girlfriday
What the heck, this drama’s premiering in two weeks? My mind is just not aboard the 2016 train. KBS’s youth action romance drama Moorim School is about to open its doors in January — it’s a coming-of-age story about a mysterious martial arts institution where a fallen idol star will start a new life as a… warrior? Wizard? General badass with kung-fu skills? I don’t know, but it’s Lee Hyun-woo, so he can be whatever he wants. The stills and teasers make it look like a light youth drama; maybe it’ll be like Sassy Go Go with sword-fighting instead of cheerleading?
Lee Hyun-woo stars as a top idol singer-songwriter whose hearing becomes damaged, leading to the end of his career. He ends up at a strange school where they teach martial arts and lessons on virtue and honor, and eventually overcomes his selfish, prickly ways. He’ll be roommates with VIXX’s Hongbin (Feel-Good Day), a spoiled rich kid who’s used to getting everything he wants because of his powerful father (cameo by Lee Beom-soo, who starred in the PD’s last drama Prime Minister and I), and gets thrown into Moorim School to straighten out his rebellious streak.
Seo Ye-ji (Last) is the hardworking girl who works a part-time job to support her father, and she says in the teaser that everyone here has come to Moorim School for a good reason, because they have a dream. Jung Yoo-jin (Because It’s the First Time) plays headmaster Shin Hyun-joon’s daughter, the school’s ace student.
The lighter teaser actually makes me feel better about it just being the kind of youth drama we’re used to seeing. I was a little worried that they would go for moody and mysterious and fall flat, but an earnest, upbeat drama about youths finding their way with a little action thrown in? That seems like something I’d watch.
Moorim School follows Oh My Venus on Mondays and Tuesdays, and premieres January 11.

A hard-on-hearing protagonist after a long absence? In my dramaland? I can't say I'm totally on board, but damn if my curiosity isn't piqued.

?????? Are you taking about Lee hyunwoo or Hongbin? Yes, Hong Bin may be a pretty face idol and I've never seen him act so I can't speak for him. But hyunwoo is the main lead.... And he's not an idol (though he has an undeniably pretty face) so don't know what exactly you mean by "forget it".

Lee Hyun-woo may have a pretty face, but he's not considered an idol. He's been acting for several years and he's actually quite good in the few dramas and movies I've seen with him. Don't let those flower boy looks (and he is a cutie) fool you or deter you from watching. I'm not a huge fan of high school dramas (although was VERY pleasantly surprised by Sassy Go Go), but will give it a try just for LHW.

He is a seasoned actor in spite of his young age. The sole reason why I found the korean Hana-kimi-adaptation enjoyable is his acting. I was sufficiently impressed that I have watched whatever he is in ever since.
I AM a fan of highschool dramas, though.

is the hardworking girl who works a part-time job to support her father
oh boy, another one of those.
This could do much worse than be like Sassy Go Go, but at least Lee Hyun-woo is more than capable of headlining a series. And Jung Yoo-jin isn't too shabby either, iirc.

She was good in Last, this show could go either way depending on the overall vibe and script quality. Its 50-50 now.

The actress doesn't bother me, but I'm just a little tired of it being almost compulsory for high school heroines in kdramas to either
a) be very poor and have part-time jobs, or
b) be viciously bullied.
We got a recent exception to that with Sassy Go Go, but it looks like we're back to form in Murim.

You're right about that. Well, this show has it all. An idol, a chaebol, an entitled winner at school and a hardworking poor girl. Same old stuff in new package but It could work if done right.

Eh, I don't know what to think of this drama. When I first saw its title Moorim School, I thought it will have elements that will be somewhat similar to the taiwanese KO One drama series. It would have been more interesting that way.
I guess I'll try 2 episodes first as usual to see if it fits my tastes, having Lee Hyun Woo is a bonus.

Pft. Why does hearing matter? He's got nothing on Sam Dong. :)

For Lee Hyun Woo's sake, I hope this drama does well. He deserves a breakout hit. Hopefully, even with (potentially) low ratings, it will have good word of mouth.

Personally I really hope they do something different with this rather than the typical high school drama, because what interests me is the supernatural element. Don't waste it, drama.
Also, is it too much to hope that we might get two couples as opposed to the usual annoying quadrangle?

Thanks! I posted that comment from mobile but now that I'm on my laptop I saw the link for the post I was referring to. This is the statement I was talking about:
"but the bold claims the broadcaster is putting forth, calling the series “killer content” that’ll usher in “a new Hallyu paradigm” to break the “stagnant drama market” out of its current plateau."
Welp, hope it's good!

those looks cool!
and i only wish, please no romance. please just go for all suspense and friendship. because lately i watch a drama that has sooo many genres including hot teen romance, but the best drama is when bestfriends finding out how friend and family is so much valuable. and thats beautiful.
