Kim Nam-gil courted for new melodrama from director Lee Yoon-ki
by girlfriday
Kim Nam-gil (The Shameless, Shark) sure is lining up the projects lately; it’s hard to keep track of all of his upcoming movies, but it’s nice to know that there’ll always be another one around the bend. He’s currently considering an offer to headline the newest film from director Lee Yoon-ki, of the thoughtful arthouse films My Dear Enemy, Come Rain, Come Shine, and Ad-lib Night, among others. His new project is called My Angel, and tells the story of a man who meets a woman in a vegetative state. How do you have a love story between a man and a woman in a… You know what, I don’t want to ask.
Kim Nam-gil is being courted to play an insurance investigator who witnessed his own wife’s suicide. Gack, that’s horrifying. He then meets a woman in a vegetative state, and the film is about their unconventional love story. It sounds bizarre, but the thing is, Lee Yoon-ki’s films are unconventional anyway, so maybe in practice it’ll make some kind of sense?
The director is known for his contemplative films about men and women’s relationships, often told in condensed time (a few hours, a day). He’s worked with top-notch actors like Ha Jung-woo, Jeon Do-yeon, Hyun Bin, Im Soo-jung, Gong Yoo, and gives them complex and opaque characters thrown into strained situations (things like awkward breakups, or exes demanding loan repayment — it sounds crazy, but Ha Jung-woo and Jeon Do-yeon make it awesome).
Kim Nam-gil is considering for now, and meanwhile he’s in the sageuk Sound of a Flower currently in theaters, and the upcoming disaster film Pandora and the thriller Murderer’s Guide to Memory. Director Lee Yoon-ki’s A Man and a Woman with Gong Yoo and Jeon Do-yeon is due out in theaters soon.

a love story between a man and a woman in a vegetative state? Is this going to be done via some kind of mind/dream linkup, because I can't imagine it working any other way.....
anyway, I hope it turns out interesting. Better than Sound of a Flop anyway (and no, that wasn't a typo, it really was a massive flop).

well, at least Snow White woke up as soon as he kissed her so they got to be awake for the rest of the relationship ;)

LOL! In a few of the older versions of the tale, the Prince declares the maiden to be his wife long before she is awakened from the magic that holds her in a vegetative/sleep state.
Folk-tale precedents aside, I think your suggestion of the dream connection sounds interesting. I still don't know if I'll check this film out when it becomes available.

try the Pirates, it's the closest thing to romcom he's done in years.
He has great chemistry with Sohn Ye-jin and looks exactly like Captain Jack Sparrow in Joseon, so it's worth a shot!

Lee Jin Wook is ok but he would have been my ideal choice opposite Moon Chae Won for Mr. Black.

My ideal for Mr Black would have been a Park Hae-jin/Moon Chae-won pairing, though I didn't even think of it until after jb/gf mentioned them in a podcast.
Kim Nam-gil at this stage is basically the go-to guy for revenge melos but I don't think I can take him dying yet again.
