Hwang Jung-eum eyes a return to MBC in Tyrant
by javabeans
This lady never rests, but with all the hits she’s churned out for MBC, they’d hardly want her to. Hwang Jung-eum is becoming one of the broadcaster’s biggest hitmakers, and after kicking off the year with one MBC success (Kill Me, Heal Me) and closing it with another (She Was Pretty), she is now reportedly considering a new drama titled Tyrant, which was announced a couple months ago as the next series from Empress Ki writer Jang Young-chul. (Another show that did quite well for MBC. Execs must be beside themselves hoping for this drama match-up to materialize.)
Tyrant would reunite Hwang and the writer after previously working together on two SBS dramas, 2010’s period series Giant and the 2013 weekend drama Incarnation of Money. This drama spans twenty years, starting in the late 1990s in the post-IMF-crisis era, and is described as “a revenge story of a man sacrificed to the demons of greed.” It also promises to depict the ugly bare faces of the privileged elites who are wrapped in a thick veil of secrecy, as well as a love story that resembles “a flower that blooms even in a mud pit.”
So rich people greedy, bad. Love story good. Got it. Sounds like a dark story with lots of people doing unsavory things, which would return Hwang to more serious fare after a year enjoying the lighter side of romance and comedy.
The character Hwang Jung-eum is considering (her reps were quick to say this is only one of several projects she’s looking at) is of a woman who has to take care of her autistic younger brother following their father’s death, who lives “like a materialistic snob” (the wording suggests she’s forcing herself to appear that way rather than being that way naturally). She teams with the male lead to uncover who’s behind her father’s death, and becomes a driving force in the revenge.
Tyrant is set to follow current Monday-Tuesday drama Dazzling Temptation, premiering in April.

She's a hot commodity for all producers right now ??
Her Endless Love didn't do well, even cut several eps. But this one maybe will be good?
Considering the good track of the writer.
Who's rumoured to be the hero? JJM, no? JJM fans said the writer will make another one after the not so good EK. Or who?

Ugh, one can only hope that the lead is Joo Jin Mo but Lee Seung Ki has been rumored for quite a while... if this ends up being the case, I'm going to be super disappointed because the role should be going to someone with a powerful and mature aura.

I think Joo Jin Moo is too old for this role. The male lead in this drama was born around 1981-1982, the same age with Hyun Bin, Kang Dong Won. Also the story spends mostly during the time the male lead being in his 20s and early 30s so the male lead would be perfect if he's an 8X.

Endless Love was in the SBS weekend drama Time Slot of Ratings Death - I'm not surprised even Hwang Jung-eum couldn't save it. It was a waste of her and Jung Kyung-ho, honestly.
if this is the writer behind Giant, I could SO get behind this. I just hope they find a good leading man.

As much as I like her in Comedy, I totally buy her in Dark/Sad role like Secret, her acting is heartbreaking
This lady really work her youth! that's how she is still relevant, then to think about it she does have lot of show with good rating, High Kick 2, Giant, Can you Hear My heart, Secret, She Was Pretty and memorable role as in KMHM

As one of HJE's fans, I know she'll come back to serious genre-role after 2 consecutive romcoms. While I prefer her to take this rather than Moon Lover (her previous casting rumor), since Tyrant has a much better writer & will be her 3rd collaboration after Giant & IoM, it reminds me too much of Endless Love, a period revenge she did in 2014. Not to mention Tyrant will likely be a long 50 eps drama. I don't want her to take a long drama like that. So I still hope for something else for HJE.

I think you're right about that, the lady is smart in picking her projects (inasmuch as you can't control some factors down the line). I seem to recall that the casting for Kill Me Heal Me went something like:
*weeks of confusion with no one taking the male lead and the possible female lead quitting*
Ji-sung: I need to get out of the house. Send me the script. *reads* This is ridiculously complicated. I'm in.
Producers: We've asked everyone we can think of except Ji-sung's immediately previous costar who surely wouldn't be down for this. What the hell. Hey Jung-eum, Ji-sung is doing our drama and we--
Jung-eum: I'm in. Send me a script.
Producers: so you can decide?
Jung-eum: No you idiots we start filming in 2 weeks I need to invent my character and learn my lines!!

She is one of the Ratings Queen in Korea, her title is "MidBoHwang", means "the trusted actress Hwang". Everything she touches almost always successful. She has unique sense of picking scripts too, How many times already that many ppl doubted her dramas & characters before they aired? But look at the results. Koreans also dub her as "irreplaceable actress", since they think her acting style is so distinct that there are roles that can only be act successfully by her. There is a belief that she can lift anything to be popular, that was why Park Seo Joon immediately agreed to be in SWP after he knew that HJE would be in it.
Also, she has wide range. She can act in period, melo, medical, thriller as well as romcom, sitcom. All that factors makes her always get many script offers.

Forgot one more thing. Her pairings also mostly memorable. Koreans still fondly remember her chemistry with Choi Daniel, Joo Sang Wook, Kim Jae Won, JS, PSJ. After all, who else could reunite with 2 former co-stars in just a span of 6 months and 1 year in Korea.

At least in this case, I think it has more to do with the fact that this team has a relationship with her and a habit of rehiring the same actors. Lee Beom-soo, Park Sang-min, Lee Deok-hwa, and Lee Ki-young are just a few other examples of this.
Outside of this case, I'm as clueless as you are.

I'm honestly getting tired of the same actor/actresses starring in too many dramas back to back.
There are many talented actors and actresses I want to see given lead roles, but over this past year, we've had too many of the same people. Even when it comes to my own favourites like Joo Sang Wook etc. I prefer them taking more of a break. That allows them to better judge a new drama to take, and create more of a different feeling in their acting.
This is like Jang Nara who's also overdone it. Just please take on a different, shorter role, or a movie role or something. Starring in back to back dramas isn't a good thing, because often they're not able to create enough of a difference, and I'd prefer seeing other actors/actresses given a chance.
I get that it's a job, and it's better for them to work, but surely the production companies realise that they don't need to keep casting them back to back in dramas every few months.
With that said, I'm going to hope Hwang Jung-eum doesn't take this drama. I'm tired of seeing her, and will probably actively avoid this drama if she's cast in it. I'd rather not do that since it sounds like it'd be interesting.

MTE. I'm tired of seeing the same actors/actresses over and over again but tbh I think the pool of actors willing to do Kdramas over Kmovies/lucrative Chinese products is dwindling. And the industry has *always* prized so called star power over content so it's going to keep drawing from the same small group of people.

I agree with you. But from the point of view of the actors, they may not be able to reject roles that easily. I think especially in the case of JNR, she's getting older and her roles have never been diverse, she's kind of at the stage of her career where she needs to get every role out there that's available. HJE just hit her big break and she's 30. For male actors it's less of an issue, but there's always a reason why they are taking roles. It may be for financial reasons and whatsoever. Not everyone's like JJH, KSH who can probably reject every role and still have countless script offers coming in. The actors you mentioned all don't have a huge fan base as well. They need to strike the iron while it's hot. We can't fault them for that, but we can always not watch the drama.

There's no denying that her star power is waning (She said so herself in Healing Camp), it's been so since 03 or so, and her dramas haven't been any ratings hit ever since (except for Baby-Faced Beauty).
pogo
December 17, 2015 at 12:23 AM
Really? Because she only did one kdrama (BFB) between 2005 and late 2012.
After that, School 2013 was most definitely a hit even if she wasn't the centre of it. Fated To Love You was also successful, especially coming in the middle of the ratings slump. And Mr Baek premiered to the highest opening ratings of any prime time weekday drama in 2014 - 14 percent.
Of course, it backslid after that, but the fact that the opening ratings were so high suggests that the actors including Jang Nara, did have the star power to pull in viewers, even if it lost them to weak writing.

Things need to be corrected here about @paroles notes for HJE. 1st, she has already been big since few years ago (certainly not "just hit her big break" like you said).
Your comment also somehow suggested that she's just starting to be prolific with short time span between works recently, since you said she just hit big break and is 30, while it has actually been her habit to have a new drama every 4-6 months or so since she was 24-25.

I just think we have very different ideas of what's called "the big break". I think she was popular after High Kick, good in Giant, but really only Secret or SWP should be considered "that" drama for her right? And I was always under the impression that she took one drama per year before this. That translates to approx. 10mths per drama. Unless they were 50 episodes long. I will admit that certain dramas like Full House 2 didn't register when I was typing my comment out. I think it's good that I forget about the bad ones anyway.
Also, I don't see anything rude with my comment. And I'm amazed that just one line can elicit such a long response. Clearly the point I was trying to make is that actors have reasons to be prolific.

Honestly, I find your offensive offensive and I'm not sure why. Ah, perhaps it's the sense of entitlement in the comment. You don't want to see her, you are tired of her, so you want her to not take the job. That's the vibe I'm getting. And that's just...

Expressing a preference does not equal entitlement as no viewer actually has the power to affect casting decisions. Giant is definitely their best work, in a critical sense, no argument, so I would recommend trying it when you're up for it...but I have to say it's also the one I enjoyed the least. Their characters often come off as obnoxious to me, and without humor to take the edge off, they can be intolerable. I hated almost everyone in that drama at some point, except Hwang Jung-eum's character, her oldest brother, and Jo Pil-yeon haha (best bad guy ever!). Plus their scripts often dip into extreme moral relativity if not nihilism, which is hard to take without levity as well.

You can always guarantee there will be some mean hearted comments (not talking about opinions on her acting style) in HJE posts. I guess because you think she's ugly and/or can't act, you get pressed that she's so popular and hot in the industry and don't think she deserves it.
Not like she's come out of nowhere and established herself in ways we only mostly see with Korean male actors these days. Stay predictable!

I love HJE! She was adorable in SWP, and I'm looking forward to her dramas, because anything she touches turns to gold! She has great acting talent and seems really sweet in her interviews.

Had me at Hwang Jung-eum. Hardcore fangirl here. I loved Incarnation of Money, more than that I loved her in Incarnation of Money. Please cast a good actor opposite Unni, I don't want any talentless pretty boys.

Good, I'm glad she's going back to some deeper, melo stuff! It's good to have a chance in genres after a while! Plus, now she can show haters that she isn't just "loud" all the time.

Her romcoms are always too over the top for me because of her overacting, but her melos have been bearable. But, I do agree that girl needs to take a break. Didn't she say she was going to take a 6 month hiatus?

She should freak everyone out by signing up for 18 months of military service. That would make her unique among kdrama actresses.

"It also promises to depict the ugly bare faces of the privileged elites who are wrapped in a thick veil of secrecy"
What thick veil of secrecy? Any given week on Korean television, the ugly faces of the rich are all over the the screens in a half-dozen drama series.
It's hell being rich in Korea.
All the awesome suits and dresses in the world can't alleviate their suffering. Or their frequent homicides.

She's a terrible actress. Period. If I posted this comment earlier, I'd probably be accused of "bashing" or "hating" on her but I ain't changing my opinion. If I had to blame someone for not being able to see Ji Sung's geeeeeenius acting (or so I hear) in KMHM, it's because I wouldn't watch her.
If it really is her, I hope it's not LSG or I'll have to skip his drama. Not that I'd be watching it unless it's great though. 50 episodes is too much for me.

She's very uneven, which is weird because it doesn't seem to be from a lack of work ethic. At her worst she's unwatchable and generally she's way over the top, but the few times she's toned it down, she did fairly well. She did a good job in Giant, and a credible one in Golden Time.

She's OTT on comedy, but in no way a terrible actor - I'd reserve that snub for people like Nam Gyuri, Han Ga-in, Song Seung-heon, Taecyeon and some others.
She overdoes the screaming in Kill Me Heal Me, but an overabundance of expressiveness is far easier to mould into a good performance than the alternative. And it's really down to PDs in the end - her cameo in Potato Star QR2013 was far more toned down but still believably funny, unlike the antics of early KMHM.

That's quite the list lol. At that level, I tend to separate them out into the few bad actors who are genuinely amusing to watch (Song Seung-heon, or Jung Don-hwan) and the multitude that are positively painful (Han Ga-in, Taecyeon, and many other illustrious talents--Go Joo-won, Oh Ji-ho, Gu Hye-sun, Yoon Eun-hye, to name a few).

I think I've caught her in more doing her crappier version of acting than good. But maybe I just find her extremely OTT in everything yet. I haven't seen Golden Time and I thought she was actually decent in Giant (her only tolerable performance IMO). Mostly though, I just skip her dramas because I generally find her terrible.

Yeah, Golden Time was a step down from her performance in Giant, and everything before or since then...well, you've suffered through it so the less said the better lol.
Sometimes if I've seen an actor at their worst, it's hard to even appreciate them at their best, because the associations are too strong. And when you've been burned so many times, you can hardly be expected to rejoice in their casting lol.

Lol, I really agree with your second paragraph. In the end, no matter how hard we try to erase a bad impression, if its one that left the strongest mark, its hard to forget. But I've also seen actors improve immensely and paired up with a winsome character in a good drama, my opinions have changed. I just never found HJW in such a combination yet. Of course, there's a first to everything so this can be it lol

...yet you've wasted the time to tell Mandy that she's a "dumbass liar," based on one comment you didn't like. By your own rationale, you should be above any kind of reaction to your source of irritation.
Hwang Jung-eum is an actress; it is completely appropriate to have an opinion on her acting, positive or otherwise. Mandy's personal thoughts, on the other hand, are not up for your review, and frankly it says more about you than anyone that you're willing to insult her so quickly, particularly over something so petty.

Really? I find her OTT in comedies sometimes but that is largely her doing as told by the PD - she is far from unwatchable, and if I can forgive Park Seo-joon for coming off so unlikable in the early episodes of SWP, I can easily deal with her OTT-ness. She's as good or better than many of the male actors in her generation, acting-wise (Lee Min-ho, Jung Il-woo etc).

Honestly, I think comedy isn't for her. But then its weird because I find melodrama isn't her thing either. She was okay in Secret, but then her tortured expression - which spanned basically the whole drama - wore me thin eventually. She lacks variation imo. I could watch someone like Soo Ae in 10 melodramas in a row and it will still feel like she isn't doing a routine of the same thing over and over again. HJE has like two facial expressions when in tears while 100 while trying to be funny. She doesn't succeed in both, but this is one opinion I understand many would disagree with.
I do completely agree that she is at the same level (at times better and at times worse) than the likes of LMH, JIW et all. I just think that compared to all the actresses who gets equally praised like HJW, Soo Ae, SHK, MCW, she's so far behind.

Oh Mandy, rather than terrible i will say she has the tendency to overacted in rom-com and I dislike her in KMHM and SWP.
But...
She is terribly great in Secret, Giant and Endless Love. Not a huge fan of her, but i do appreciate talent.
since you already decided not to watch this if she accepts, well it is up to you. There are so many of us will watch this, without u it will not affect this drama at all ;)
Ahh yes agree with your prayer that LSG will not accept this. ;)

I love her, but I didn't really like her in She Was Pretty. I thought she rocked the comedy in KMHM and the melo in Secret but SWP was just way too OTT. Maybe comedy isn't her thing.
Was waiting for her to come back with something a bit more serious and here we are. Delighted! Who is her leading man?

Nice, I'm a huge HJE fan, so I'll probably catch this...after the drama ends. Unfortunately I'm too busy to follow a 16-episode drama live, let alone a 50-episode one.
I was thinking, Yoon Si Yoon returns from the Marines next month. He would be a perfect fit to be her male co-star, plus it would be a reunion for them.

Girl needs to rest a little, it's not good for her health, and sometimes over exposure doesn't go well.
Rumors for male lead is Seung Gi, I love him. I don't know if he'll really do this drama -50 ep is too much- but I hope he proves people above wrong iand does a good job if he's casted. He looks too baby-ish and good boy. He'll have to lose his babyfat cheeks and cut his hair first.

I really liked her in Giant, was a big fan of her and Sang Wook's pairing.
Then I watched SWP. She screamed. That was the end of my liking her.
I then started KMHM. She screamed again. She's now on my unwatchable list. She's the first actress I ever put on that list. Le sigh!

I prefer her so much in heavier and meatier role, I disliked her in KMHM and SWP (not that she is bad actress, but she overacted in rom-com) so if she accepted this, I will be in.
But..please no LSG. :( I will prefer older actor! I actually don't mind if Ji Sung and HJE reunite again. err. Ji Sung is so underrated even he was awesome in KMHM and he definitely need a strong project like this.

She is good acting, but I would prefer in this character HaJi Won. I beleive she can pull the character better and if Lee Seung Gi is gonna be the lead, they would be perfect. The King Two Hearts was excellent eventhough is was not that well received (mostly for the North and South issue) but the performances were awesome and the chemistry between them is very important for a drama to success. I don't see Her as a good partner for LSG, I don't know they just don't seem to "fit"together. Eventhough many here said LSG is not good for this character,, I disagree. He is capable of doing it very well. Lets see what happens at the end, time would tell.
