Apology or confession in Descended From the Sun’s first teaser

Oh boy. Well, you know you have a Kim Eun-sook drama on your hands when the hero manages to anger you in twenty seconds flat. Sometimes I forget that we’re stepping into her alternaverse where up is down and domineering is supposed to be sexy. Is it too much to hope that the first teaser isn’t an accurate reflection of the drama to come? There’s a first for everything, no?

After months of pre-production and shooting ahead of broadcast in overseas locations, we finally get the first glimpse of Descended From the Sun, the new KBS Wednesday-Thursday melodrama starring Song Hye-gyo (That Winter, The Wind Blows) and Song Joong-ki (Nice Guy) as a doctor and a solider who fall in love in a fictional war-torn country.

The teaser opens on the leads mid-argument, as Song Joong-ki brings up, “When I kissed you that time without permission…” Song Hye-gyo tries to cut him off to stop talking about it, but he steels his gaze and asks, “What should I do, apologize or confess?” Well you could start by sounding apologetic instead of mad, ’cause I’m pretty sure it’s not her fault you’re in this situation. It just plays as tense rather than romantic, but maybe that’s the point.

I do expect them to have chemistry in the drama, and for the tumultuous setting to heighten the melodrama and the romance, so I don’t think the show will be disappointing on that front. This writer (Heirs, Secret Garden) just tends to take actors I like and have them play characters that I don’t like, and it always makes my head spin. C’mon, Song Joong-ki. I’m rooting for you not to be an asshole. You can do it!

Descended From the Sun follows Master of Trade—Inn 2015 in February.

Oh thank god, I'm not the only one.

While watching this kind of shows I'm always thinking "God, I really REALLY like you, [actor's name] but I'm wondering what the hell did you think when you read the script for the first time, 'cause your character it's not an aniti-hero, it's just plain an asshole".

This kind of characters and narrative always make me uncomfortable, not just for the crappy choices of the writer but because it make me wonder if the actors have thought something along the lines of "Oh yeah, what an wonderful character, I definitely want to play them. Oh, look at that, what a sexy scene." and that kind of dirties my opinion of them and it's something I can't help it.

Scandals about lovers, parties, plastic surgeries, whatever...I couldn't care less. Sometimes I think "You should drink less, it's not good for your health" or "You really should care less of what people think about you". You know, thinks along these lines.

What really affects me it's to discover that someone is sexist or chauvinist, racist, abusive...
(i.e. I always thought of Sean Connery as the perfect gentleman, always so polite...So when I discovered his opinions of women and "how to handle them"...well, to me a myth has fallen.)

Am I the only one who feels this way sometimes?

Then what does that made Lee Min Ho who said in interviews that he wanted to be more like Kim Tan? He even let on that his buddy, Kim Bum's romancing style is very much like Kim Tan's. He called it manly.

Judging by the ratings and how popular Lee Min Ho is, the Koreans and fandom aren't bothered by all these issues discussed here. That's why Kim Eun Sook's dramas will continue to do well. Song Joong Ki is the blue eyed boy of KBS, he will probably win huge in 2016 awards.

Not only they are not bothered but they like it a lot. Perhaps some people really like the way those lead role boys treat the girls in those two dramas. ..... I am a boy and I feel that it is ...somehow cheap :) . But ofcourse I am not talking about descendants , I am looking forward to see what kind of drama it is

Actors probably choose her projects because she is very famous. Her dramas have high ratings; so, it will only increase their popularity. And an actor's agency has a say in the projects they choose too. I am thinking a newbie may not have much choice in picking a project.

The leads are never "newbies". People aren't questioning newbies, but wondering how people like Song Joong-ki, Lee Min-ho, Hyun-bin, who do have a choice and considerable fame, are like "Oh, yeah, this guy is a great character to play" when said guy is nothing but a jerk (i.e. not an interesting, complex role – we all know there are 'baddies' that are worth playing).

Like others, I've blacklisted this writer from my drama-watching because her dramas just make me angry in a way that is not worth my time or energy. I can't say (lead) actors who choose her projects earn any brownie points from me – really don't think they are going for an acting challenge, but primarily for ratings & popularity with opting for a KES drama. Which is not to say I wouldn't watch other dramas with those actors, just that there are other actors' projects that I'm probably more interested in.

i was really excited to see song joong ki again but then i was reminded how much i HATED lee min ho's character in Heirs. ugh it's like a reflex reaction to scowl every time i think of kim tan and his weirdly pink lipstick smirk. Hyun Bin's character was at least tempered by being Ha Ji Won's body and all the gender hijinks. but still a jerk.

sigh, i mean i guess SJK's character in Nice Guy wasn't so great to women either... so maybe this drama can be saved too. but so help me gawd Song Hye Gyo, if you play wide eye nube who gets dragged around by her wrist every which direction, I'ma smack the screen. i firmly hope for some feminist talkback. praise it sister!

Kim Eun Sook's male leads get worse with every drama, and unfortunately ratings are giving her the positive reinforcement which means this is only going to continue. It's a shame because she actually used to be a good writer - City Hall is my favourite drama of all time. But it seems like she's gotten drunk off her own success and stopped trying to create organic plot and conflict, and instead using extremes in her characters to create tension.

Here's news for you, KES: making your male lead an asshole/stalker is not a cute way to cause conflict; nor is makeing your heroine a poor doormat an easy way to create sympathy for her. It's just lazy, bad writing.

Required fields are marked *

Can't believe that there are those who lap up that drivel.

Take the worst elements of K-dramas and make them even worse.

Gotta love it when the heroine hates on the stalker/a-hole male lead and then inexplicably suddenly falls head over heals for him.

Just lazy, bad writing all around.

I'm pretty shocked that it was the same writer that wrote City Hall, Secret Garden and The Heirs. I just watched City Hall recently and it was great - a strong, spunky female protagonist, an ambivalent male lead but the entire set up of local politics, questions of loyalty and idealism etc - was so well fleshed out. It was really mature story telling.

I would have never dreamed it was the same writer who gave us Secret Garden and The Heirs. Secret Garden was a strange creature - the fantasy elements were so half-hearted and the rules so undefined, it just felt like a narrative device thrown in because the main storyline was so lame. And yes, I can't abide that the female lead, who starts the series showing us she's totally badass, gets basically overwhelmed and worn down by Hyun Bin.

With the Heirs - I'm a little less irritated by Lee Min Ho (other than his horrendous pronunciation of "anniversary" which still sticks in my mind) as I think he was terribly miscast. He just looked far too mature to play Kim Tan, and so made Kim Tan looked he should have known better than be as wishy washy and yet try to dominate. A younger actor probably could be forgiven for adolescent confusion. But what I really found way over baked was how the writer tried to set up these supposedly dramatic, tri-way scenarios, with lots of staring and camera zooms - like, no, just because you make it stylised, don't make it dramatic.

Still, when does this come on? Think it's winter, no? I guess the cold months of staying in - I'm sure I'll give it a shot, fingers crossed. SJK was good enough in the Deep Rooted Tree and Scholarly Scandals to deserve a watch.

Totally agree about City Hall and how strange it is that she started writing the way she did since Secret Garden.

Not gonna lie though, I'm probably still gonna watch, even if only to be able to hate on the show in an informed way, lol. Because it's probably going to be huge. I only hope it won't dim my serious love for SJK.

I consider myself very biased towards Kim Eun-sook, she's one of my favourite writers. I think the reason why some commenters have a problem with her characters is because they are not the primary audience meant for the stories that she writes. It's an altogether different culture for some people so having to accept the fact that wrist-grabbing or whatever else she writes is perfectly acceptable in other cultures is difficult, if not impossible for them. The Korean audience seem to be perfectly fine with it since her dramas always have such high ratings. I've seen almost all her dramas with the exception of South of the Sun, which I can't seem to find anywhere, and my favourite is Heirs and my least favourite is Lovers. I remember fast forwarding it till the end from episode 10. I also like how I personally, I don't know about anyone else, can find something in the characters that I relate with especially her female leads. (I guess I can't be real-life friends with some of you guys here because I also have the tendency to shriek and overreact like Hwang Jung-eum. Hehe!)
I don't like Song Hye-gyo as an actress since I feel like she falls short of fully embodying the emotion she's supposed to be feeling, I hope to be able to at least appreciate her in this show.

You know, this drama might just manage the impossible task of making me get mad at Song Joong-ki.

Which is astonishing, considering even Nice Guy didn't do that (and in that drama he actively lies to, uses and manipulates the love of his life, and they almost kill each other in a deliberate car crash)

0

I do hope that will not happen because I don't want to get mad or even hate SJK, that's just sad and depressing thought :(

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, but the difference it's the narrative. The narrative it's all, no matter what the character does.

K-dramas and Korean movies are so great to me because they make me feel sympathy towards characters that objectively I shouldn't. And that's because in those stories (usually) nothing it's black or white, but mostly grey.

Take "Nice Guy" for example. At first we see a genuinely good person make bad decisions with the best of intentions. Then we see a lot of awful things happens to him and how every of them darkened more and more his view of the world. We see the development.

But with each step we know that what he's doing IS wrong. The narrative tell us so. The narrative plays with us because it make us think "Oh god, that's horrible, but I probably would do the same if not worse if that happened to me...ohmygod am I a bad person for thinking that?!".

That kind of narrative make us realise that everyone has a dark side or at least the potential of it. And that's why we are capable of empathize with not-so-perfect protagonists or even with antagonists.

So what's the difference between "Nice Guy" (for example) and this preview?
Again, the narrative.
They are showing us a (very) tense scene and playing it as romantic. He did a shitty thing and he's not even sorry for it. He's not apologizing for it. He's annoyed, irritated because she didn't reacted the way he wanted AND she even dared to interrupt him! Such unreasonable woman!

I don't know about you girls, but I would feel very threatened if something like this happened to me, I don't care if the guy has an Adonis face or he's the last man of the world.

So yeah, narrative is important. It's the diference between "Cool motive, still murder" and "Ooooh, so sexy".

Ehh well it's just 20 sec teaser and i can't exactly wrap my head around what's the narrative is about nor the context. I'll judge after actually watch the drama.

I think I will watch this one after it is done airing and without reading the recaps here. I might or might not like this drama as I did not really hate Heirs like people here on Dramabeans (because it introduced me to Kim Woo Bin). Then again, I started my kdrama obsession with Boys Over Flowers and Heirs was only the second drama I watched. And I sure have matured since then.

Still I guess this seems like a drama to be enjoyed/ hated on its own :P

Always girl falls in love with male then get ignored by the male.. ?So secret garden is one of my favorite. Speaking of heirs I agree with u all.. It was such a boring typical chaebol type story.. Waste of time..

Really don't know why SJK continues to choose these depressing melodramatic dramas. Everyone fell in love with him as the foppish Yong ha in Sungkyunkan scandal. He has great comic timing and could easily pull off a rom com role. Somehow I think he keeps accepting these kind of roles because he wants to appear more manly and tough despite his baby face. He should just go with it. He's got a baby face and he's going to be wearing that same face the rest of his life. Always playing a brooding asshole doesn't make him look any older or manlier. It's selling his range of skills short.

I am currently watching Level 7 Civil Servant which seemed to be on everyone`s worst drama list, but even this is still more entertaining - if I shut off my brain like when I watch comedies like Johnny English. But I cannot view Heirs in other light to make it more pleasant to watch. Kim woo bin and kim ji won were the saving grace but the writing was to poor to let their talent (or character) shine.
