EPISODE 10: “Memory”
It’s mid-January 1989, and Taek’s dad is back at home now but still on bed rest. Sun-woo’s mom makes sure to bring him his dinner and warns him not to try doing the dishes.
Deok-sun and No-eul are so lost in watching the movie La Boum on TV that Mom says they’ll get sucked into the television. The movie is playing at Jung-hwan’s house too, and suddenly Jung-hwan’s Dad sneaks up behind Mom to put a pair of headphones on her to recreate the romantic scene in the movie. Mom just snaps at him and wonders where her expensive can of American ham went.
Jung-bong, who just returned from ten days on a vegetarian temple diet, is hunched over his desk as usual. Only this time, he’s carefully peeling open a can of SPAM to scoop and eat with a spoon. Gross.
Dong-ryong is cozied up in Jung-hwan’s bed and refuses to go home because no one’s there, but he also refuses to sleep over because tomorrow’s his birthday and Mom promised to cook him a special breakfast. Jung-hwan is amazed that his mother is going to cook, and Dong-ryong confirms that Mom hasn’t cooked in months.
But aw, the next morning Dong-ryong gets up early and shuffles into the kitchen to find a note from Mom, apologizing for having to rush off to work. She left some cash on the table and tells him to buy something to eat with his friends, and he sighs in disappointment.
Deok-sun brings her girlfriends over to her house for the first time, and they flinch when they hear that Bora unni is home. Deok-sun tells them to just bow at the waist if they see her, and has to convince them that Unni won’t bite.
They ask if they can get a peek at Taek, but Deok-sun snaps that Taek is off-limits, and they can see anyone else but him. She calls him their neighborhood treasure who needs to be protected, and he’s not home anyway.
They perk up when Sun-woo comes by, but Deok-sun refuses to invite him over, and when he starts to ask about Bora noona, she shouts that Unni left early in the morning and stomps off.
Her friends gape at her ginormous house, and Deok-sun slowly points down to the basement to say that she lives down there. That’s why she’s never had them over until now, but they’re good friends and reassure her that it’s cool.
They head down the stairs and stop in their tracks when Jung-hwan comes out of her house looking awkward. He stammers that he had something to say to her, and pulls her aside for a chat. On the way up, he kind of gets trapped under the awning and can’t extract himself without looking uncool. It’s so awkward. I love it.
Naturally, Deok-sun’s friends spy on them eagerly. Inside, they flinch again when they have to greet Bora, and Deok-sun does too when Unni warns her not to make a mess on her way out.
Jung-hwan sees that Dad’s birthday is tomorrow, and Mom says she convinced Dad to splurge on a new car. They head out to see what he bought, excited for an upgrade, only to find Dad proudly showing off his new car… that looks an awful lot like the old one, just red. They sigh and trudge back inside without a word.
Deok-sun’s friend is excited to set her up with a boy, and they make plans for the blind date. Her friends ask what Jung-hwan wanted, and she says he asked to go see a movie. She swears that they’re just friends, but this time her friends are positive that he likes her. They tell her to check by telling him about her blind date, and if he shows anything other than indifference, it means he likes her.
Deok-sun asks what happens if he does like her, and they tell her to date him: “Do you like him?” Deok-sun: “I… don’t know.” They suggest dating him to find out, and she worries about how uncomfortable things would become. They urge her to ask sincerely and not joke around, convinced that they’re never wrong about these things… except for that time with Sun-woo. They ask about the girl Sun-woo likes, and Deok-sun snaps that it’s no one they know.
The girl in question has been contemplating her Lee Sun-hee concert tickets all day long, and finally makes up her mind to find Sun-woo at the library. He’s not at his desk, so she leaves her ticket there, and returns about five times to make sure it’s visible and to write a note. She tells him that she can’t go, and that he should go with his friends.
Jung-hwan’s mom is upset about the car, and her mood only gets worse when she finds out that Jung-bong’s latest obsession is video games. (I love how Dad acts out all the games to ask which one.) We see Jung-bong monopolizing the arcade machine, much to the dismay of the grade-schooler boys in the neighborhood.
Deok-sun steels herself to tell Jung-hwan about her blind date, but now she’s the awkward one at his front door, not sure where to look or how to stand. He asks if she has something to say to him, but she chickens out and asks where he’s going, and he says that Sun-woo’s desk at the library is free because Sun-woo’s studying at home before the concert tonight. Oh noes, that means he won’t see Bora’s note!
Sun-woo gets ready for his big date with such excitement, and heads out with his concert ticket in hand and the cutest grin on his face. Meanwhile, Bora studies in the library but can’t seem to concentrate, and at the last minute she runs out.
She goes to Sun-woo’s desk, and is taken aback when she finds Jung-hwan there instead. She sees her ticket and note on the floor and quickly retrieves them, and Jung-hwan says that Sun-woo never came here because of the concert. Jung-hwan: “I thought he was going with you…?” She races out of there before he can finish asking, and grumbles as she gets into her car and peels away. Aw, you totally care!
Sun-woo waits and waits outside the stadium, while Taek’s dad watches Lee Sun-hee on TV. Sun-woo’s mom brings dinner again, and she tells him that Taek’s dinner is on the table too. It’s become routine by now, and he promises not to do the dishes and just leave everything to her.
It’s getting late, and the ushers make the final call to seat people as Sun-woo continues to wait outside in the cold. He suddenly starts smiling though, and we see Bora running as fast as she can until she reaches him. She’s out of breath as she explains that she left her ticket and a note but he didn’t get it, and she only came here to say she that she couldn’t come here. Lol, this is great.
She tells him not to take it the wrong way, and grumps in annoyance that he caused her to worry. He just smiles and says, “You came, that’s all that matters.” He grabs her by the hand and runs inside the stadium. Yay!
When Jung-hwan comes home that night, Deok-sun is standing in the yard waiting for him, and this time she doesn’t chicken out and admits that she has something to ask him. He cuts her off and suggests going to his room because it’s cold, so then she sits awkwardly on his bed waiting to start.
He sits down next to her and prompts her to begin, and she hesitates another beat before finally blurting that she’s going on a blind date this week. Jung-hwan’s expression changes immediately, though he doesn’t say anything as Deok-sun names the guy she’s being set up with.
There’s another long pause, and Deok-sun bravely scootches closer to Jung-hwan on the bed until she’s right in his face: “Should I go on the blind date?” I’d think Jung-hwan were a statue if he didn’t blink.
She leans in even closer and asks again, “Should I go on the blind date?” I get the distinct feeling that Jung-hwan is more focused on her lips than on her words, but we cut away before hearing his answer.
That night, both sisters lie awake with their thoughts, Sun-woo smiles as he falls asleep, Jung-hwan stares at his ceiling, and Taek stays up to play baduk.
Jung-hwan’s family sings happy birthday to Dad in the morning, but he does seem depressed on his birthday, which Mom mentioned the day before. The boys give him a present, and Mom knows right away that they had Deok-sun pick it out because they’d have no clue what to buy.
Dad seems deflated all throughout breakfast, and when Deok-sun comes in with their usual greeting, Dad actually seems unenthused and goes through the motions for Deok-sun’s sake.
As if to answer our question, Dad tells Mom that he doesn’t know why he always gets depressed on his birthday. She asks if he used to get beaten on his birthday, or if he misses his mother, or if he got his heart broken on his birthday, but he chuckles and says his mom’s been gone for ten years and it’s none of those things, and he doesn’t really know why he gets sad.
Deok-sun frowns as Jung-bong scrapes all the frosting off of Dad’s birthday cake and shoves it into his mouth all at once (grooooss), and then challenges him by trying to shove an entire slice into her mouth in one bite. Jung-hwan just watches the two of them shovel cake for a while, and then says he has something to give Deok-sun.
When Deok-sun hears that Jung-bong is trying to get the high score on a video game, she says that she’s the high-scorer in their neighborhood. Jung-hwan says Hyung’s been banned from arcade games in their neighborhood though: “He got into a fistfight with the grade-schoolers.”
Deok-sun’s parents come by to wish Jung-hwan’s dad a happy birthday, but Mom tells him that he gets weirdly depressed on his birthday. While everyone’s milling about, Jung-hwan answers the phone and shouts, “You ran away from home?!”
Suddenly all eyes are on him as he calls Dong-ryong a crazy bastard, and tells him to stay put. Jung-hwan tells the parents that Dong-ryong ran away from home yesterday and ran out of money. He threatened to run again if Jung-hwan told his parents.
They wonder what would make a good kid like Dong-ryong run away from home, and Jung-hwan’s mom sighs that she’d believe it if her sons ran away, but not him. Both boys turn to look at her as if they’re offended, heh.
Deok-sun’s dad tells Jung-hwan to go bring Dong-ryong back, and they’ll all sit tight and pretend not to know anything. Jung-hwan says the kids will go and get him back, and Deok-sun’s mom worries about them going without an adult.
So of course Bora gets roped into driving them, much to her ire and Sun-woo’s glee. She snaps at Taek to lower his head in the backseat, only to have everyone else yell at her not to mess with Taekie. Aw. Bora screams that she’s going to rip Dong-ryong a new one, and Jung-hwan even covers Taek’s ears so he doesn’t have to hear.
They ask where Dong-ryong is, and Jung-hwan says he kept saying incoherent things about being at the beach with Chow Yun-fat. We see Dong-ryong huddled near a Chow Yun-fat poster in the cold, looking not at all happy to have run away from home.
Jung-bong thinks he’s being sneaky as he creeps up behind Mom and reaches for her wallet, and Mom doesn’t even have to turn her head as she suggests he take a bigger bill. He reenacts Chow Yun-fat’s commercial on the TV and gives Mom a kiss on the cheek, and she smacks him for going to play video games again.
Dong-ryong is so hungry that he resorts to stealing a few chocopies and a bottle of soju from a group of guys playing volleyball, and when he gets caught in the act, he begs and pleads as two guys drag him away.
It turns out to be Jung-hwan and Sun-woo though, and they throw Dong-ryong into the car and lock him inside. He screams to be let out, that is until Bora noona tells him to shut up or die, and he quickly calms down.
It’s not until they have Dong-ryong that the boys realize their problem—they have one too many passengers for the return trip home. Bora grouses that it’s their fault for all of them coming along, and says they’ll just have to leave someone behind to take the bus home.
Sun-woo says maybe two is better than one, and Bora points out Taek and Deok-sun giggling over chips like a pair of oblivious fools. Deok-sun offers Taek a chip and sticks her finger in his mouth over and over, and the others wonder how Taek is actually a genius.
Jung-hwan’s mom goes to throw away a box of old junk that Dad insists on keeping, but he catches her in the act and she’s forced to bring it all back inside. She tells the other moms over beers that he hoards everything and refuses to throw anything away. The others ask Sun-woo’s mom about how Taek’s dad is doing, and they nudge her to just marry him. She protests a little too much, which only makes the others tease her more.
Deok-sun and Taek just stare as Bora and the other boys drive off without them, and they don’t even seem the least bit concerned or surprised. Deok-sun just asks Taek for his wallet, inspects the contents, and then offers to buy him meat with his money, heh.
Taek mostly smiles at her while she stuffs her face, and when she comes out of the bathroom, a pair of neighborhood grandpas has already wrangled Taek into a game of baduk. She drags him back to the beach for coffee, and sighs when he can’t even manage to drink that without spilling it on himself. She wonders how he’ll get through life, worried that he’s just asking for others to take advantage of him.
Neither of them wants to head back home right away, and Deok-sun agrees that they can’t waste a trip to the beach. She sheds her socks and shoes despite the frigid winter temperature, and eggs Taek on to do the same, goading him to be a man.
He refuses, whining about it being too cold for that. But when a stray volleyball comes flying in right at Deok-sun, he’s lightning fast about protecting her and throws himself in its path like a swoony human shield. Deok-sun: “Oooh, you’re a man.” Taek: “Of course I’m a man. I’m not a woman.”
She suddenly demands, “Then take it off.” Ha, she means his shoes, and drags him by the feet to the water’s edge, where they tussle for his shoes and play in the water as the sun sets behind them. It’s ridiculously adorable.
Jung-hwan’s dad is still depressed and turns down the offer to go out for dinner, and wonders where Jung-bong is. Jung-bong has spent the day playing his video game and finally wins, and when he goes to start over from the beginning, a scary-looking gangster stops him. Ruh-roh, not a couple of grade-schoolers this time. He goes running as a whole pack of thugs gives chase.
Deok-sun’s friend Mi-ok (the one with the braces) comes out of her giant mansion and goes back to get an umbrella because it looks like rain. She stops at a payphone to call their friend Ja-hyun, who swoons about having just met her fated match. Mi-ok sighs that that kind of stuff doesn’t exist (she’s always the one telling them that romance novels aren’t real).
…Which is of course the perfect timing for her to walk right into the path of oncoming gangsters, who brush past her as they race by. And then someone suddenly appears beside her and puts an arm around her as he pulls the umbrella down over them.
It’s Jung-bong, who slowly lifts the umbrella to reveal a smile, a la Kang Dong-won in Tempation of Wolves. Mi-ok is transfixed, and Jung-bong says she looks familiar. She tells him what school she goes to, and he says he knows a girl named Deok-sun who goes there. Mi-ok: “She’s my best friend!” Jung-bong: “What a coincidence! No… is it fate?” Hahaha. They stand there like that in the rain for a really long time as other people keep passing them by.
Bora and the boys arrive in the neighborhood, and she tells Jung-hwan to make sure Dong-ryong returns to his room before leaving him alone. Sun-woo is the one to finally ask why he ran away from home (you guys seriously didn’t ask him until now?), and they’re surprised when it’s not because of Teacher Dad, but his mother.
Mom is the 7-year consecutive Insurance King at her company, but Dong-ryong complains that Mom only cares about money, and thinks of her clients more than her kids. He says that yesterday was his birthday (the boys wish him a quick happy belated birthday, which he doesn’t seem to mind), and that Mom just left money on the table instead of breakfast.
Dong-ryong says that his parents were always working, so he and his brothers have gotten used to eating out or eating at their friends’ houses, but Mom has one dish that she makes really well—seaweed soup. It’s because she cooks at home for that one special occasion—their birthdays. But ever since she became Insurance King, it’s been years since he’s tasted her seaweed soup.
The guys feel bad for Dong-ryong, but Bora listens to the whole story and then asks what brand his shoes are, and points out all the brand-name clothes he’s wearing from head to toe. Bora says that Deok-sun’s been wearing the same no-name sneakers for three years, as we see Deok-sun run home pouring wet and race to dry her shoes as if they’re precious.
Bora tells Dong-ryong that his parents work hard to earn all that money, and they don’t have time to guess what he’s thinking. She tells him to just get mad instead of running away, because his parents aren’t mind-readers.
Properly chastised, Dong-ryong shuffles to his front door with Jung-hwan behind him. He hesitates and tries to bargain with Jung-hwan to go in with him, but Jung-hwan says he’d just get hit too and makes him go inside.
Dong-ryong heads inside, prepared to be in some major trouble. But agh, what he comes home to is sadder than two angry parents, because Mom didn’t even notice he never came home last night, and Dad yells at him to stop spending the night at his friend’s house all the time. That’s the end, and Dong-ryong hangs his head in defeat. Aw.
Sun-woo walks Bora home in the rain, and just casually shares his plans to go home for dinner and then head out to the library and be back late. She asks what that has to do with her, and he says it’s just for her to know, and he adds that just in case, he’ll wait outside her house for ten minutes.
She calls him crazy, but he says he’s just doing what he wants and she needn’t concern herself with him. She’s about to get mad at him again, but then she notices that his shoulder is dripping wet from the rain because he’s been holding the umbrella over her all this time. Of course he has! He lurves you! He notices her noticing that and tries to hide his smile.
Jung-hwan comes out and invites Sun-woo over for chicken, and says that Deok-sun and Taek got home way before them because Bora drives like a turtle. Dong-ryong is there too, and Deok-sun says he ran away again. Dong-ryong sighs that no one even knew he ran away from home in the first place and doesn’t see the point in it anymore.
Jung-hwan’s mom bought chickens for everyone on the street because of Dad’s birthday, though nothing seems to fix Dad’s mood today. Mom insists on throwing out the box of old junk in the pouring rain with Jung-bong, and then stops to marvel at an old cassette tape in the box.
The other boys gasp to hear that Deok-sun threw Taek in the water, and she insists that it was just his feet. They show the scar on Taek’s forehead and remind her that she put that there too, back when they were nine and she thought it’d be fun to wrestle with Taek on concrete. Dong-ryong: “That’s attempted murder.”
They argue that he’s been weird ever since (lol), and that he could’ve gone pro even younger if it weren’t for her. They tell her to take responsibility for the rest of her life (as in, marry him), so she declares, “Fine, I’ll take responsibility!” Taek looks over at her with a little smile as she says that she lucked out in the deal.
Jung-hwan snarks that Taek did nothing wrong to deserve that, while the others notice Taek smiling and accuse him of liking Deok-sun. He denies it with a laugh, and Dong-ryong tells them to date because Taek ought to learn the bitterness of life at some point.
They all laugh it off, but what they don’t notice is the way Taek keeps smiling and stealing little glances at Deok-sun.
When she gets up to go to the bathroom, Dong-ryong asks what he really thinks of Deok-sun, and Sun-woo encourages the match. Jung-hwan laughs nervously and says Taek would have to be crazy when there are so many girls out there. But Taek shocks them all with a simple and direct answer: “I like her.”
Oh noooooooooo. Jung-hwaaaaaan!
Dong-ryong asks again, and Taek doesn’t beat about the bush: “I like Deok-sun. Not as a friend, but as a woman.” Omo. Omo.
Ack, I can’t take the look in Jung-hwan’s eyes. Taek smiles as he says it out loud, and Dong-ryong and Sun-woo express their utter shock, joking that he may have sustained a head injury at the beach. But Jung-hwan is quiet the whole time, trying not to betray his reaction as his friends prod him to join in the teasing. He gives this little laugh, but it feels like he’s crying on the inside.
Jung-hwan’s mom plays the cassette tape she found in Dad’s box of junk, labeled “Jung-bong age 9, Jung-hwan age 3.” It’s the two boys singing songs and being adorable, and Dad gets increasingly sadder as he listens to it.
Mom wonders if he’s just feeling nostalgic, but Dad says he can hear it in the background—his mother’s voice. It was the year before she passed away, and Grandma and Dad have this cute argument in the recording about who should sing on his birthday, because she’s the one who worked hard to give birth and all.
Tears trickle down Dad’s face at the sound of her voice. He must’ve been missing his mother and didn’t even know it. He heads out in the rain and sings the song he sang to her back then, remembering her and taking the moment to grieve.
Sun-woo’s mom leaves dinner for Taek’s dad like always, but this time he asks her to stay and eat with him. She gives excuses like having to make Sun-woo’s dinner, but he knows that the kids are all eating chicken and tells her to sit down and eat already: “I’m sick of eating alone.” All he says is for her to stay and eat with him, but why does it sound like he’s asking for more?
She hesitates, but he out-stubborns her again and she sits down across the table to eat with him. I hope you guys get married!
Jung-hwan’s dad says he’s finally figured out why he gets sad on his birthday. Mom already guessed that it’s because of his mother, and Dad gets teary-eyed as he says that he didn’t even know that he always remembered his mother on his birthday. He sheds a tear as he says like a little boy, “I wish I could call her. I want to call her and say it’s my birthday, but I have no place to call.” Mom pats him on the shoulder sweetly as he cries.
Deok-sun is in shock when her friend Mi-ok tells her that she met Jung-bong and now believes in fate. Deok-sun is confused and wonders if they’re talking about the same Jung-bong, and Mi-ok changes all of Deok-sun’s descriptions from “fat” to “chubby” and from “round” to “cute.”
Mi-ok asks about Jung-hwan, and Deok-sun gets adorably shy and starts twirling the phone cord at the mention of him. She refuses to tell Mi-ok what he said about the blind date though, and says it’s her secret.
We rewind to FINALLY hear his answer, the night that Deok-sun asked if she should go on her blind date. He stared and stared for the longest time without saying anything, and then: “Don’t go.”
It was Deok-sun’s turn to become a statue, and he repeated, “Don’t go on the blind date.” All they did is sit there staring wide-eyed at each other, but it says something that I’m screaming the whole time, Kiss her! Kiss her, you fool!
Back in the present, Jung-hwan sits at his desk and takes out a pair of Lee Moon-se concert tickets that he bought. Things are way more complicated now though, and he heaves a long sigh.
Sun-woo walks home after studying and smiles when he turns the corner onto his street. There’s Bora, standing outside her house waiting for him like she said she wouldn’t. He asks if she’s waiting for him, and he’s all giddy smiles until the moment she says that there’s something she wants to say.
He’s scared that it’s another rejection and tries to stave it off till tomorrow, but she continues and says that he really has a way of making her concerned and is always around wherever she looks. He braces himself for what’s coming next.
She says that she’s thought about it and it’s probably her fault because she gave him the leeway to do that. And then she really stuns him by smiling and declaring very matter-of-factly, “Okay, let’s date. I like you too.”
He’s so shocked that he can’t form words, while she’s already rattling off all the people he can’t tell (basically anyone they know, lol). He just beams and nods, and then she smiles back at him in the cutest way.
After gathering his wits, the thing Sun-woo finally manages to say is, “Noona, can I kiss you?” Hahaha. Bora snarls no and slams the door shut behind her, and Sun-woo is just over the moon as he yells goodnight at her from the street. He stands out there for a good long while, basking in his happy moment.
COMMENTS
Aw, I’m happy for Sun-woo, and glad that Bora actually came to like him instead of always thinking of him as a little brother who’d never grow up. While that could be said of the others in various ways, Sun-woo really is more mature than the rest of them, as a big brother to Jin-ju, and especially as a thoughtful, caring son to his single mother. And he clearly knows Bora well enough to know how to convey his sincerity in actions, and to hang back without pressuring her. I thought he did a pretty good job of respecting her boundaries while still demanding to be seen as a romantic suitor and not just the kid down the street. Though he kinda killed it when he asked for permission to kiss her, which made him seem twelve and adorable.
I think they’ll be even cuter from this point forward, what with trying to keep their relationship a secret on the street where nobody keeps any secrets. I really enjoy that Bora’s relationship is very true to life, where you either choose to date a guy or not and then just date, because I’m sure we’ll get plenty of drama from Deok-sun’s lovelines, which will be far more angsty. That’s fine with me, since I don’t actually want my dramas to be, yunno, without drama, but it’s a nice reprieve to have one couple get to actually be a couple while the rest of the kids sort out their mess of tangled feelings.
I loved that the whole gang went out to bring Dong-ryong home, even though it was mostly an excuse to go on a day trip for most of them. I don’t mind that we don’t see much of Dong-ryong’s home life on a regular basis since we have so many other parents, but it was nice to see a bit of explanation as to why he’s a latchkey kid who doesn’t like going home. I thought maybe he got ordered around by his brothers or just always got yelled at by Teacher Dad, but it seems that his house is mostly empty, and that’s what he hates more than anything. It was pretty sad that he and Jung-hwan’s dad were both sad on their birthdays for the same reason—missing their moms—but Dong-ryong’s the kind of kid who would just suffer quietly and go unnoticed, even when he friggin’ ran away from home. I expected them not to notice he was ever gone, but I thought it would be played more for comedy; when he realized that his parents never knew that his big act of rebellion had even happened, he looked so deflated, like he’d never be able to tell them how he feels if they wouldn’t first get mad at him for running away. He seems like a well-adjusted kid though, and he has friends who’d come running to get him anywhere, so I’m not too worried about him.
It was a big episode for Taek and Jung-hwan alike, though I was equally excited to see the first signs of Deok-sun’s feelings when her friend asked how things went with Jung-hwan. She’d gone from not knowing how she felt about him to being coy about her feelings, which was the cutest little moment. Granted, she was quick to fall for Sun-woo at her friends’ suggestion and just as quick to fall out, so it’s not exactly a lot to go on at this stage. And I was awed by Taek’s direct admission of feelings, even if it was just to the boys for now, because there was zero hesitation on his part. We’d seen his crazy adoring smiles at Deok-sun for a while now so it’s not a shocker that he feels this way; but knowing and hearing it said in words is a totally different story, and Taek’s advantage is that he feels no embarrassment over letting his feelings be known.
Jung-hwan, on the other hand, oy—I’m just massively relieved he even told Deok-sun not to go on that blind date, because I was sure he’d lose his nerve and play it cool like a cool, stupid moron. I’ll be honest—my stomach dropped when Taek said he liked Deok-sun, because Jung-hwan’s silent freakout was killing me. I’m impressed that he managed to step up and tell Deok-sun not to go on that blind date at all, and I was thoroughly surprised that he didn’t tease her, or say it half-jokingly, or leave himself some other way out. He said the clearest thing possible, at least for the thing she wanted to know, and for a guy like Jung-hwan, I think that’s saying a LOT. It’s funny that Taek declared his feelings but Deok-sun still has no idea how he feels, but Jung-hwan hardly said a thing and yet seems to have conveyed that he likes her. In the most roundabout way, of course. Though all bets are off when Deok-sun finds out that both boys like her, because that look on Taekie’s face and the way he just says things like “I’m a man”—gah, it makes me worried for cautious kitty Jung-hwan and his cautious kitty ways.

I like Taek's character, cute puppy, nice, and sweet! I don't understand why the writers usually pair up the "bad boy" to the female lead. I want the nice boys get the girl! ?

I don't think Jung Hwan qualifies as a bad boy. He's *oof, my cat just jumped on my back* shy and unable to express his emotions very well but not a bad boy I think.

jung hwan isn't a bad boy. He's just rough around the edge, frank-speaking person and sweet in his own way. He cares for deok seon so much despite of his constant nagging. It's just that he cannot be so forward with his feelings like taek.

I feel about Taek and DS about the same way a mom would. I don't really care who he is with, I don't have to approve of the girl, as long as she can make him smile like that, it's fine by me.
Perhaps at this stage in his life, it is DS who cheers him up so; not surprising cos she is the only girl he knows well. As they get closer and older, he (or they) will feel that they are not suited for each other. I mean, just look at Taek playing baduk with the two old men during the short time that it takes DS to go to the bathroom! DS could find him boring real fast. My feeling is that it'll take somebody who also has an interest in baduk to be more than a passing fancy in Taek's life.
They are only 18. If they get to date the girl they've their eyes on, it's may not be end game; if they don't, there are plenty of other fishes in the ocean esp. for JH when he enters univ. Taek however is so introverted that he may have to wait till the only other girl he knows grows up enough to date. Ha ha ha.

I can be happy for them either way:
Taek's father w SW's mom or Taek w Jin Joo a bunch of years from now, when she is old enough to date. I'm happy if they are happy.
It'd be a bonus as it means that SW's mother can enjoy the day when she can "buy 1000 pcs of coal at a time".

My pt is that: Just like Taek's father is too taciturn to have hopes of dating anyone besides somebody he has known from his youth, Taek is too. I don't see Taek being comfortable enough to date sb who is a stranger. And we know it isn't gonna work out w DS.
"Not the Jinju thing again"? I explicitly said "when she grows up enough to date". Taek may have an IQ of 139, but he has the EQ of sb who is 6.
In a dozen years or so, his EQ may rise to a datable level.

Taek is written to be left-handed because PBG has been consistently using his left hand to eat etc so far. The husband, however, is not necessarily left-handed. I am right handed but I think I can comfortably pick up a cup or a glass and drink from it with my left hand. It doesn't mean anything until we actually see the future husband eats with his left hand.

That beach scene just destroyed me. It's sooo beautifully shot and directed, aesthetics and all. Plus PBG and Hyeri have so much natural chemistry together.
I CANNOT believe the writer/PD is trying to out do Chilbong. Like please, spare us. That masochistic feeling of knowing your ship will sink, and still unable to do anything about it. grrrr.
On a rational level I'm completely team Jung Hwan. I know why the writer chose him for end game, and narratively it all makes sense. But *emotionally* I'm stuck with Taek - Deok Sun. *SIGH* I don't even know what happened. Taek wasn't supposed to be appealing; I always fall for the bad boy/rough exterior types, and have never before rooted for a cute puppyish character (lol my heart is made of stone- even Park Soo Ha from IHYV didn't really move me). Jung Hwan is the quintessential 'tsundere' male lead, and we all know it's a proven, winning formula. So WAIII???
The way I see it, Jung Hwan - Deok Sun is backed by the imprimatur of Official OTP. So far, their relationship has hit just about every milestone in a Kdrama coupling. Jung Hwanie has the great fortune of doing all the right things at the right time (dude, even the upcoming noble idiocy next ep is a "right thing at the right time", because this is the point in the story where OTP cannot get together; Yoon Jae ah, do I smell you growing out of Jung Hwan à la Voldemort-Prof. Quirrell?). We know he is appealing because he does what a drama hero *should* do, with the bus scene, getting DS the gloves, and cute quasi-stalking. But for me (personally! I stress, personally!), this all feels very scripted .. like the 'right-ness' of the DS-JH line is derived from the plot rather than something more organic and ineffable. Now, if Taek behaved like a regular second lead, I'd be right there with team Jung Hwan, because then it's just a matter of script vs script. But instead Taek-DS is so deathly precious, fraught with potential problems, and layered, and unconventional that emotionally I'm so much more curious and invested. At 25, I've been through the dating loop enough times to know that OTP is a thing of myth.. what moves me now isn't necessarily 'omg they are meant for each other', but relationships that are allowed to breathe and live and represent the human heart --- even if in the end it wasn't "meant to be".

I totally agree with everything you wrote. PBG and Hyeri are so adorable together. They just have so much chemistry together. Those BTS and Vapp interactions just kill me. I can't help but ship them.
Rationally - JH is the hubby. The way the hubby acts is just like JH. I know people can change over time, but they don't do a total 180 change. I just can't see Taek in the hubby.
My heart is falling hard for Taek. Episode 9 showed me that he's not a frail puppy that needs taking care of. I like how he knows what he wants and goes for it. LOL @ Deok Sun wrestling Taek. The beach scene is my favourite <3 WHY ARE THEY SO CUTE TOGETHER T__T

I totally ship DS/JH, but I can agree when you say it seems a bit more scripted. JH is always there at the right time and place to do the right swoon worthy thing. Taek on the other hand doesn't get those chances, and has a job he has to do, but he still like hers and it's just more... real? Like people have their own lives in reality and aren't going to be prepared to be there semi-stalking their love interest all the time like JH. DS/TK seems more natural in how it happened and how they talk to each other. Their interaction is also so sweet and just a breath of fresh air compared to all the bickering couples we get in kdrama land.
And if they don't work out I can always ship PBG and Hyeri. They are seriously adorable.

Jung Hwan is awesome, and I'm all for swoony kdrama heroes. Hell, let’s be honest—swoony oppas = 95% of why we watch these dramas. No one grabs each episode hoping for some art-house representation of reality. And for the most part kdramas don’t need to be realistic—they are comforting and fun and optimistic, and sometimes viewers need assurance that things will always fall into the right place. An opiate for the soul, if you will.
It’s just that the DS-TK set up is so .. interesting. We find out this episode that she’s literally part of his identity, in the form of a scar (god I hope this isn’t foreshadowing). All these little details are bear-trapping me in lol. He inhabits dual worlds, is socially stunted and babied and yet has already crossed the cusp of adulthood. She becomes strangely capable where he is concerned. And then there’s the adorb factor of Deok Sun drawing him out into the sun and pushing his boundaries. Yet the problems! She doesn’t understand/appreciate baduk. He’s not that emotionally present at all times. Will she feel lonely with him, with all that focus on his career? These complications rub out the ‘kdrama swoon’ factor, but I find it so poignant, especially if you consider the underlying closeness and devotion between them. And then there’s that secret smoking Taek, who’s capable of crossing a sea of reporters with cold determination, and tell off that nosy reporter like the badass champion he is. I find this kind of hidden sex appeal super hot.

I like the swoony for sure! I also appreciate that Taek is his own man in a lot of ways. I do think DS/JH is a lot more your typical kdrama couple that everyone expects, but DS/TK would be something completely different. It's interesting and natural to me.
And that's a great point that he brings out another side in DS that I haven't see JH be able to do (yet anyway).

i love this!!!! and the fact that the writer is trying out something new with taek's character (something we didn't see with chilbong) like the beach scene, in reply1994.. najung & chilbong didn't get the chance to have fun like that at the beach (and I could never imagine her doing it with him since they're not that connected, but i can imagine najung having fun at the beach with trash) we haven't seen how chilbong's colleagues would react with najung around him, but this time we all saw how his baduk pals reacted when they saw deoksun bossing around their master taek.
deoksun and taek are more interesting in a way that they are still acting like kids, when in fact deoksun already knew that taek smokes (he is very manly as a baduk player) and even taek already sees her as a woman. they still keep that playful side of them. i think the writer should surprise us this time, i'm thrilled of what's yet to come.

Well.. *hopefully* there are interesting things to come. I'm scared the writer will microwave and serve leftovers from previous Answer Me plot-lines: JH will back off, DS is revealed to like JH and is disappointed by his backing off, Taek is thrown under the bus as a human shield to block the JH-DS love line (and will be generally miserable because DS doesn't like him "that way").
Even if JH is end game, there's gotta be a better way to write the triangle.
Thank god BR-SW is kind of triangle free, now that Jong Bong has found Maggie Cheung LOL.
seriously though .. I hate love triangles ... can be such a lazy plot device. Usually, as soon as a nasty one appears (double! wrist! grab!), my mind does the bermuda triangle and I stop analyzing the drama.

What I'm hoping for is that Taek pursues DS and because JH is a being a Noble Idiot she genuinely falls for Taek and they get together.
Taek puts his professional baduk career on hold and goes to uni with his friends which opens his world up and after a good few years together Taek and DS fall apart because they are very different people, who need different things from their life partner. It would make a change from the pining second lead the other Reply series have given us at least.
Present time DS does tease her husband about the dreadful girlfriends he's had and I can easily see JH dating a string of weirdos trying to convince the world and himself that he's perfectly fine. Not jealous or regretting stepping aside at all, nope not him.

Disclaimer: No such thing as name-calling or rude words, just a counter to this comment.
The way I see it, Taek-Deok Sun is backed by the imprimatur of Official Second Lead OTP loveline. So far their development has the great fortune of doing all the right second lead things at the right time (dude, even the fact that he'll get heartbroken once he realizes that Deok-sun actually likes Jung-hwan and how he'll take it at the end is the "right thing at the right time" because he would be hurt at first and then he'll be okay eventually cheering for the girl he loved no matter what, and we are all bound to feel sorry for the puppy second lead who never gets the girl, Chilbong-ah, do I smell you transforming into Taekkie a la Prof McGonagall and cat?)
We know he is appealing because he does what a drama second lead *should* do, with the straightfoward admission of feelings, with the fate of having the chance to spend a cute and giddy-inducing date with the female lead, with the mystery flaw that he has that we naturally find attractive, and being adorably cute so that we are drawn to feel sorry for him. But for me (personally! I stress personally!), this all feels very scripted... like the "right-ness" of the Taek-DS line is derived from the plot tropes of what it's like to have a loveline with the second lead. Now if Jung-hwan behaved as adorably and quite uniquely as our adorable little Taekkie, I'd be right there with Team Taek (he's so adorable after all and surprisingly...manly?), because then it will be just a matter of script vs script (in fact another conventional vs conventional). But JH-DS line is so undeniably real, coupled with a mutual growing of feelings, with a girl who is finally seeing her friend in a different light and a guy who sees past the obvious and notices the most subtle of things. It's a development that's TRUE TO LIFE, not scripted. Scripted is when you end up frolicking in the sea instead of going the appropriate process of negotiating should ride the car, and who should be taking the bus.
At 20, I've been through the dating loop and watched dramas and movies enough times to know that the best OTPs and the ones that last is probably not necessarily "omg they are meant for each other," but it's a factor that you can never deny. And those relationships that best represent the human heart are the ones that allows growth, acknowledges that some moments are not the right time, and hopes to correct all those mistakes when the moment comes to make that relationship last.
No, this is not a matter of logically following the loveline or rationally rooting for the proper male lead. The guy is acting on his feelings for the girl that he likes as NATURALLY (this is the right term) as breathing. He might back out because his friend really appropriately called dibs on a girl he claimed he never sees pretty at all (and if Jung-hwan actually chose to face Taek and tell him he likes Deok-sun too then people would...

...be all 'oooh he's so egoistic, he doesn't even regard her feelings!'). But whichever way, Taek is not written any differently in case of the "right" moments just as much as Jung-hwan, because he too, has been doing all the things Second Male Leads Should Do. What's organic here is not the structure of the way their plot lines were written, but about how the viewers are affected by the way each character relates to and acts on their current circumstance, regardless of whether it's Jung-hwan or Taek who did it and relative to whichever we find interesting.

I don't understand why people are being so sarcastically offensive in their responses when you are making the same exact points in the case of Taek that someone up thread made when it comes to Junghwan.
I agree with you, as I agree with them (to an extent). For as much as an argument can and has been made that Junghwan is the scripted Male Lead, Taek is the scripted Second Male Lead. I can copy paste him on to Chilbong and Yoonjae's brother (gifted, is more outwardly nice and sweet in comparison to the male lead, forward with their feelings, lost a parent or is neglected by parents, is a star genius or gifted athlete all of Korea admires but to those closest to them is just them) just as I'm sure people can copy past Junghwan onto YoonJae or Trash. The nice thing about it all is that as much as they are the same in some ways, they are also uniquely their own characters. The actors (along with the writing and whole Rseries team) in each role bring a little something here and a little something there that makes them somehow feel different. They give a nice balance of something old and something new.
Also as much as we like to think the Rseries is different from your typical kdrama (and in many ways it is) it is still very much a kdrama. Kdramaland (really overall media in general) has found and perfected (arguable I know) a storytelling formula that audience respond to. They have no plans to differ from this formula anytime soon (a few have done so with some success and failures, and many are just sticking with what works/what they know/why mess with a good thing that brings the desired results) so once you've seen 3 or 4 dramas from a given genre you can basically see and predict the general gist of what's going to happen (sometimes an exact scene). Does that take from watching this particular series and some other dramas? Nope. As much as I come knowing what to expect, the writers and team manage to still make it very entertaining and even throw me a few curve balls here and there (for example I assumed Sunwoo was going to like and be a contender for Deok Sun and they have yet -I hope it stays that way- to go down the route of having Sunwoo's mom and Taek's dad get married whether for love or connivence and companionship). The scripted argument is kind of a moot point in my humble opinion because that's the case of any drama and having watched dramas, movies, television, or read a certain books of a given genre. You've seen one American teen rom-com movie, you've seen them all. You've read one YA dystopian world novel or series, you've read them all. Seriously The 100, The Hunger Games, and Divergent, are pretty much the same book series. 1989, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and The Handmaid's Tale you read one and you get the gist of all the rest but yet they are considered classics (and justifiably so).
It all comes down to personal preference and characteristics that one finds enduring and likable/shipable or not. I...

I love your reminder to all who read you that what we see on screen is always the decision of the writers: They can choose to drop false hints, withhold critical information, change course, so it doesn't pay to get too attached, too emotional or defensive about what we see.
Discussions that share our reactions like yours enhance the viewing experience. Those that are hostile only leave a bitter taste in the mouth, and reveal one's own level of cerebral activity. Thanks for a great example of fan discussion from two ships.

I so like Taek but i think the trope is the trope.
Taek is going places, he's gonna get famous and all, and no one famous gets the girl in the Reply series. The Brother in 1997 was very famous, then Chillbong, now Taek. Baduk's just another "Baseball"
The reply series seem to like guys who are friends first and foremost, it's not so much about chemistry but friendship that gets you through longterm relationships.

Yoon Jae ah, do I smell you growing out of Jung Hwan à la Voldemort-Prof. Quirrell?
lmao I let out this weird high-pitched noise just now, thanks for scaring my neighbours!
I'm fine with whichever ship (and my money would be on Jung-hwan for the husband, since Kim Joo-hyuk's mannerisms and speech feel a LOT like Ryu Joon-yeol's) , but I do agree that JH's storyline for DS does feel a lot more scripted while Taek's kind of feels more organic, so far? Like I am surprised by all these new things we're learning about Taek, while it essentially feels like we know Jung-hwan already.
The reason I didn't get mad at 1997 for Yoon-jae's decision was because the story had already established just how close Shi-won and Yoon-jae were - they were each other's closest friends, and not just friends as part of a larger group like Deok-sun, JH & Co. In a sense, Jung-hwan's still learning Deok-sun as an individual, where Yoon-jae and Shi-won had a familiarity with each other that eliminated that need and just cut to him being helplessly, painfully in love with her and unable to do anything about it.

Mi-ok and Jung-bong:
I super happy that the richest girl in the whole series falls in love w Jung Bong at 1st sight. He'll be well taken care of the rest of his life. He won't have to endure hard work that stresses his heart nor would his not having a college degree matter in the least. He can just be their family mascot! ?

I have been refreshing dramabeans all night to read this. My mind tells me that DS-JH are endgame. Everything so far has been pointing to JH. BUT the minute Taek came into the picture, I just couldn't stay away from him. He is so adorable. Every time he smiled at Deok Sun, I just melt. What is this show doing to me!!!
One thing I noticed is that Deok Sun tends to like guys who likes her (or thinks in the case of Sun Woo). I wonder what will happen when she finds out Taek likes her too. (I want to be in her shoes.)

The best moment of the episode for me was Jung Bong`s Temptation of Wolves parody. It was pure awesomeness, even if just a tad cheesy. But I love it.
I feel for Jung Hwan. He really loves and adores Taek so there`s going to be so much angst. But we know he`s the end game so with Taek`s confession I actually worry more for Taek. Unlike 1994,I`m not blind this time and know deep down that he`s going to get his heart broken and I have a very soft spot for him. I can`t help melting every time I see him smile. I just pray that he won`t be the second Chil Bong. Let him move on sooner rather than later.

I'm totally falling for both guys. They both feel real and their feelings seem genuine and thought out. My issue is with Deok Sun. She falls in love at a drop of a hat. Like stated she only seemed to fall in love with Sun Woo because of her friends, and now it's happening again with junghwan. Honestly at this point I don't want her dating anyone. She has no idea what real feelings are. Thank god there are still like 10 episodes left because she is in no position to be in a real relationship. No wonder the husband dated other people before her, she will just fall for ay guy who likes her first. I really wanted her to fall for Junghwan on her own without her friends intervention. I don't believe her feelings at all right now.

Not really. DS wasn't ever in love with Sun Woo. She got over it the next day and was pissed he used her to get to Bora. That's her issue with him, not that she liked him. So, I don't think she really falls in love quickly. She's been having "moments" with JH well before her friends found out and has been thinking about it. She's also shown signs of like JH since the very beginning, even before SW in some ways. She seemed to want his approval more so than the other guys. It's really not quicker than the two guys randomly loving her.

she did not get over it the next day haha she freaked out on him every time that he even looked at Bora. You didn't see the tantrum over the secret santa papers? She never once said she was mad that he used her, she was upset because he liked Bora and not her. Which is why she said why Bora? Why did it have to be Bora? She still hasn't forgiven Sun Woo for rejecting her. She has had way more "moments" with Taek then with Junghwan, she hardly even pays attention to Junghwan. The only time she noticed him was after her friends said he likes you. She walks around him in her pjs, thats her comfort level with him, thats how little she sees him as a man. But now that he may like her she is nervous and shy. She is fickle, which is fine she's still young and has never had a boyfriend before. I just want her to fall in love on her OWN without her friends.

I don't think it's about her 'liking' SW at all or even 'rejecting' her (he never knew she liked him). She would've grudgingly excepted that he liked someone else, but it had to be BR, who is her sister and worst enemy.

She was MAD at him and still is, but was her heart broken? Not even slightly. She's not crying over his lost love. Her anger at him and her hurt feelings go back to her sister, not him. Had he liked anyone else she would not have given a crap. He's not that important. Her reactions towards Sun Woo and JH are totally different.
She was quiet and thoughtful when dealing with JH (and still is) and considers what's going on. With Sun Woo she was just barged in being annoying towards him and didn't even notice he wasn't into her.
Her feelings for Junghwan aren't 100% love, but I don't think his for hers are either. They both have crushes on each other that seem to be building into more. I see them both as sincere and she doesn't just like him because her friends. She liked him after the McD's trip imo, which is before her friends said anything to her. She didn't notice him when she plainly asked him why he was acting like he was? That's not noticing? Sure.
She has zero romantic feelings towards Taek as cute as their moments are.

I disagree. DS had her heart broken by SW. If DS didn't have any feelings for SW then why would she dream about SW and even send a postcard to the radio station confessing that she likes him. It was an innocent crush, but it's not like crushes are easy to get over. She probably would've been depressed after SW rejected her no matter what, but the fact that it was Bora made it 1000x worse and led to anger

@poodle
Nah, I don't agree. She had her heart broken by him liking her sister. After that first night she didn't cry over lost love and she's not jealous he likes someone else. It's all back to Bora. She's like Jan Brady and Bora is Marcia.

Yeah, that's what I see as reasoning for liking SW, she was curious but her friends really had nothing to do with her feelings for JH. She was already going down that road before they showed up.
It's reasonable and rational to try to figure out if a person likes you before you say something back to them. She did that with the blind date question (her friends advice), but her feelings were already wavering by then. Only Sun Woo seems brave enough to say he likes someone without at least some hint feelings might be returned. There's a reason JH can't fully say he likes her either yet.
Right no, none of the feelings seem all the totally sincere and real yet (minus oppa-ya and sw's mo) , but I'm sure they'll get their with all the couples.

They're eighteen! I do think it's pretty natural and relatable how the love lines are building up. I think we forget that. Personally, I love how DS has been reacting to everything just because at that age I would probably have reacted the same way and felt the same things. Even JH's potential noble idiocy bit makes sense, given how they treasure Taek above everyone else (which I hope doesn't actually happen, but ah well, gotta brace ourselves for that, yeah?).
I'm gonna try and detract from the shipping. I already have a bias for JH and my heart just goes out to him, but maaaaan, when Taek smiles, everything is brighter! huhuhuhu, this cast is golden.

One thing that keeps striking me is Deok-Sun's refusal to let her friends near Taek. At first, I was thinking she's just being overprotective like the squad normally is concering Task. But over and over again she keeps refusing. Is it me overreacting or is something going on?

Me too. I feel that it's strange that her friends have not met Taek yet and her refusal to let them see him. They've been bugging her since a few episodes back. Her friends have practically seen every one of Deoksun's childhood friends and people around her except for Taek. Dongryong, Sunwoo, Junghwan, Bora, Noeul..heck one of them even knows Jungbong now. But not Taek. I wonder why... Her friends were able to notice Sunwoo(albeit it was a wrong assumption) and Junghwan having feelings for her and openly told her what they thought. Wonder what'll they notice if they were to finally meet Taek.

I honestly think that's more because everyone is inherently protective of Taek in the neighbourhood. He gets enough international attention as it is and we can see how it drains him. With this tiny neighbourhood clique, he gets to feel normal. If his own friends start bringing around strangers that are fans, where's he going to escape too? Who's he going to trust to have his back?

That's what I've been saying all along about Taek: considering he's been traveling and competing and living in the adult work, dealing with that kind of stress makes him more adult then some of the kids back home. People think him as this lost child and a puppy but I've always considered him more mature than most of the boys, sure he's absent-minded and helpless sometimes but mentally, he's strong. And yes, there is an innocence to him, but he's not that innocent. I've said time and time again, how it would be once he aimed that focus and concentration and steely spine of his to courting Deok Sun and we're finally seeing it. He's a baduk player dude, it involves strategy, and patience and resolve, he's sneaky. I like it. When Taek just tells his feelings to the boys, it fits his personality so far.
JungHwan is shy and awkward with his feelings and he's so cute. And I squeed so hard when he told Deok Sun not to go on that blind date.
It hurts to see the look on JungHwan's face when Taek said he liked DeokSun. IT HURTS. I mean it made it even worse for JungHwan because it's Taek and not any other boy because they all have a soft spot for Taek.
Deok Sun would probably have her head explode if Taek confessed her feelings, especially since she's focused on JungHwan right now. But JungHwan would probably pull back now at least for a little while.

So far I have only been reading the recaps, but today I finally got around watching ep9-12... and my conclusion from esp this beach scene is... Taek is the genius who is playing the fool with them?? Maybe its his defense mechanism to be accepted... geniuses ( like Sherlock) find other normal people boring because they cannot match their intellect or line of thinking, but Taek found that by being the baby of the group, his friends does not revere or be awed by him...
Like how he lets Deok sun tease him with the snacks..come on...that is just him playing with her... like he can't tell that she is fake feeding him?
hahahah that will be a HUGE twist, if Taek is this manipulative sort of guy who is usually bursting with smart assed comments won't it? XD
I still LOVE Taek now though...

I like both couples actually, so I want whoever she likes and it's pretty obvious it's Junghwan who she romantically likes.
I feel bad for Junghwan since the Taek thing is so out of nowhere for him. Now I wonder when his friends will figure out that he likes Deok-Sun too. Everyone is going to figure it out he does before Deok-Sun because he's going to start being cold next week.
I know Junghwan will be the noble idiot, but I think she might be as well when she finds out. Taek is someone they both cherish and I can see both of them ignoring their feelings because of that. She thinks he needs more than he probably does, and he won't want to hurt Taek.
The other couples.... Sun Woo and Bora just moved too quickly for me to really be moved by anything. Moving fast is fine, but it's just out of nowhere that she changed her mind and liked him. Though maybe she's going to give him a hard time and he'll have to keep working hard to win her over. I think the family issues will be their main issues though. Not sure his mom will be happy with this.
And I loove that JB hit the jackpot again lol. He's going to have a super rich wife after getting his family rich from the lotto.

Bora's smile is so cute :) It's the first time I've seen her smile like that in the show. You can see why Sunwoo likes her, the way he beams when she bossily tells Dong Ryong to communicate with his parents instead of running away to cause concern.
I love the little moments in this show, from Jung Hwan hitting his head in front of Deok Sun's friends and trying to play it off as no big deal, to Deok Sun's playing with the telephone cord when she talks about Jung Hwan.
Deok Sun's "Should I go?" is like a nod to Yoon Yoon Jae's "Should I go on the date" from 1997, except this time, the girl has a clue.

But obviously it's DS's feelings that we don't know yet. We already saw her in that cycle of crushing on someone. I hope the writers show it properly how it's different from SW.
By the way, the beach scene? So cute! DS can really get (force) Taek to loosen up a bit.. And he listens obediently with a smile!

I love this show so much and I love both Jung-hwan and Taek's crushes so much that I don't want to get into the guessing game. But Taek's confession was such a bittersweet moment, with his huge smile, combined with Jung-hwan's heart dropping to the floor. I really love this ep..especially because there are clear statements and gestures from both Taekie and Jung Hwan. I always team Taekie simply because of his lack of emotions and the absent of a mother (yes, I am shallow hehe). But DokSun is the only girl that has contacts with him therefore I understand why he adores her. I really don't know who will be the husband, either JH or Taekie, but if it's JH then I hope Taekie will be fine since he takes loads of pills and we assume he is sick. I can't afford another deaths..please..if taekie is the husband then before that there's something that makes Taekie change and that see in the future hubby's character. I was so so sad seeing JH's face..I can't imagine the pain. Gosh...
Putting the story aside, Park Bo Geum seems to like to bite his lips while looking at Hyeri, I find it cute..plus I love his chiseled face bone structure, reminds me of those old Hollywood actors.

Then be like awwwwww when Taek let DS fooling around with crackers
Then melted when Taek shouting as DS chased around his shoes (Am I the only one that fangirl over PBG's voice?)
Then OMONA YOU SAID IT!!! when Taek said he likes DS
But then be like oh nooooooooooo when JH heard it.
To KISS HER KISS HER KISS HER at the last scene when he stared at her before answering.

I'll be quite honest, I'll be happy with either Jung Hwan OR Taekie. Both had their pluses and minuses.
Jung Hwan is the dream, swoony, adoring and a little complicated to make it interesting. He's very perceptive in that way girls want, but sadly he's infuriatingly vague when he shouldn't be; and he's cruising for noble idiot which is never sexy. Hell, you WANT all his little gestures to win! He's actually TRYING, which is a lot more than you can say about Taek who is frustratingly slow as molasses. Also, who doesn't want to end up with the guy that is clearly going to dote on your for all eternity? Even if you have to take some smark for the privilege?
Taekie is a different animal entirely. He's not quick of the uptake and even forgets important things that matter to Duk Seon (which is not cool), but he clearly adores her. I mean that smile is EVERYTHING. But the real reason I like DS & Taek is because unlike with JH, Taekie would give Duk Seon "purpose." Thus far, other than as a love interest, Duk Seon is kinda a useless human being. She's not particularly bright, and as the secondary caregiver in her family it was like she was tailor made for the job of looking out for someone like Taek, as clearly proven by last week's episode. However, it's ishy when someone revolves their life around someone else. Isn't this type of thing feminist are trying to tell girls NOT to do? But this takes place in that past, so should we let it slide just this once?
With all these pros and cons it's just easier to just like them both and enjoy the ride. It also stops me from walking away with a broken heart.

you hit it right on. it is true that taek gives DS purpose. her interactions with him makes me understand WHY someone could actually like her cuz although she's never come off as a brat to me, she's just so slow lol. i still really do wonder why JH even started crushin on her. i mean, granted, the crush is SUPER cute but i just don't see what he sees in her, if that makes sense.
on the other hand, taek & DS i can see WHY he likes her. to him, she's kind & caring. you can see that they both genuinely enjoy one another's company. unlike DS & JH who're always bickering and i'm just here like, DOESN'T THAT GET TIRING!? lol.
BUT i don't see DS being happy (romantically) with taek. he just doesn't GET her (or females really, lets be honest lol.) this is shown in how he forgot he was her secret santa, how he fell asleep at the theaters, etc. compared to JH who got DS the gloves (even without her asking), going to give her an umbrella when it was raining, going to mcdonalds when she called.
so, the way things have been played out, i understand why the lovelines are like they are. i can understand why taek likes DS and i can understand why DS now is beginning to like JH. ALTHOUGH, i am still a little bit thrown off as to WHY JH likes DS but eh, i'll let that go and just enjoy the ride :D

Maybe JH likes DS because he sees DS being so caring and sweet with Taek and his Dad.
DS "even gets" his Dad's sense of humor!

Adding to what isnin said, what I like about DS is that she's full of life and a genuinely warm person who smiles easily, wears her heart on her sleeves and doesn't mind being goofy w/o a care in the world of how others see her. Usually teenagers are self conscious, but she's confident and owns herself. She's like the girl next door who's approachable and easy to befriend. Who wouldn't like that?

I have to politely disagree w/ your analysis.
JH is not vague. Except for not explicitly saying he likes her, he's clearly shown signs that he likes her (i.e. protecting her in the bus, buying her pink gloves, showing up at MacDonalds, asking her to the movies). Guys, esp someone like JH, don't do things like that unless they like a girl. DS is jus slow on the uptake.
Noble Idiocy happens when it's forced and there's no reason for it, but it's not the case here. JH is someone who's loyal and loves his family and friends and would put their happiness above his. Otherwise, you'd have situations like Bora, her ex-bf and ex-bff, which is absolutely not sexy.
I see what you're saying, but I don't think taking care of Taek serves as a positive 'purpose' and long term happiness for DS. That's exactly the reason I don't think they make a good OTP. All her life as the middle child, she's the scapegoat and always ignored and forgotten. There's no need for her to continue living that role in her life when she has the choice not to. And she's a typical teenager. Who knows their purpose at the age of 18?
I also don't think she's useless. She's not the smartest person, but compared to everyone else, she adds a spark of energy and happiness to their lives. She's the kind of person you would go to if you if you're feeling sad and you want someone to cheer you up.

DR is an observant/perceptive person in general, but I don't think he'll be the end game. There hasn't been any signs that he likes DS romantically.
Yes, you're right. It IS nice to see someone doing something special for her for once. JH is the only person who puts DS first and takes care of her when no one else does. He's the type of person who does things to show his love (which is what DS needs) whereas Taek will probably verbally express it, but won't be able to follow through in a timely manner (i.e. pink gloves). He's not a genius baduk for nothing. Talented people like him have to put all their focus and energy into their craft in order to achieve that level of greatness. If he were the end game, DS will always come in second.

I don't mind DS/TK, but the whole "she's stupid and useless so she should go be his caretaker" thing is just kind of gross. She's really neither stupid nor useless. Her caring and sacrifices are not appreciated much in her family, but without them they'd really be lost. Same thing with the group of friends, without DS the group would be a lot less fun/bright.

JH's silent freakout killed me too, but I'm not at all surprised that he told DS not to go on the blind date. I think he's always been direct w/ her in his awkward way (i.e. going to the concert just the two of them, meeting her and her friends at McDonalds, buying her pink gloves, asking her to the movies, etc) except for actually saying he likes her.
My love for PBG momentarily blinded me, but it's clear to me that JH is much better for DS. Like SW is to BR, JH has a better understanding of DS and can make her happier in the long run than Taek. For example:
- I like that JH and DS are similar in how they take care of others, quietly w/o making it obvious (i.e. JH for his family, DS for Taek).
- They sacrifice their own happiness for others (i.e. JH for SW and now Taek, DS for her family b/c she's the forgotten middle child and she just has to give in all the time).
- He just notices so many things about DS that other people don't. She doesn't need to say anything..he observes, gets it and responds in the best adorkable way.
- She's the perfect addition to his family. They're all cute and weird.
Basically, I just love JH to bits. When he got trapped by DS and her friends and the awning..I had to watch that scene a couple of times. He's so endearing, I want him to stay that character forever!!

Deok Sun is young and I think she just wants to date and have a boyfriend. That`s why she “fell“ for Sun Woo after being encouraged by her friends. With Jung Hwan though, she might actually develop deeper feelings by the looks of it. On the other hand,I don`t think she has feelings for Taek other than a friend that she cherishes and feels the need to protect, which is killing me T T

Uh, I almost forgot that preview! There's something tells me that DS knows JH's feeling that night when DS asking him about the blind date and somehow they end up laying next to each other. I think it happens before Taek's confession.
Anyway, with mentality like Taek he isn't going to take the blow from DS-JH relationship easily because it seems like he's really treasure DS so much he is willing to step out of his comfort zone. Also seeing that the guys are trying to protect Taek from any harms I am afraid JH will be the one who will get hurt because he will plays the defeated one.
Still I am happy there is no confusion in SW-BR love line, they are so cute together... like fire and ice, and I find it cute since Bora is so hot-tempered toward her family but she is like a tamed lioness toward SW. SW with his smiles really a cure for her..

Whoa! Jung-hwan is so slow. So it's the concert ticket that he intended to give to Deuk-son while she was eating the birthday cake of Jung-hwan's father. He should have given it before Taek confessed to the group that he likes Deuk-son. Maybe it will somehow make difference.
I'm 100% sure that Jung-hwan will back down from pursuing Deuk-son being a marshmallow person inside. But I guess Taek will realize at the end that Jung-hwan likes Deuk-son too and Deuk-son likes him back. So maybe he'll give way and be the one who will make things possible for Jung-hwan and Deukson to get together. As we have seen, he looks weak outside but we know he's strong inside which is the exact opposite of Jung-hwan.

I agree. JH is the better match for DS on paper as a boyfriend and husband. To be perfectly honest,Taek will probably make DS very lonely as he has a laser sharp focus on baduk and put it as his top priority. I`m not saying that he`s not a caring or loving person, because we know he loves his dad dearly. But if DS picked Taek, she needs to be prepared to be always the number two,an after thought, and I don`t think she would be very happy with that.

I think that is the beauty of DS and Taek relationship, with Taek DS is always win, the foods, the bickering and all, but let's see that DS haven't see the "man" side of Taek, I think in some point DS will get in an awe and realize that Taek is not that "weak" and finally see him as a man. DS still treats him as the younger one, but Taeki haven't pull his ace card yet so DS is not "shock"yet toward him.
Right now DS perhaps see JH as a man, but I am really sure that the rule will change once Taek put his effort in the game.
Or perhaps I watch too much "makjjang" drama!

The thing is, she's kinda fine sacrificing constantly. It's not fair that she has to, but you can see in China she never went for the good parts of the food, and didn't whine she didn't get attention. So, being #2 in Taek's life wouldn't be that different than her role now. It's actually a step up in some ways, since she's a forgotten #3 to her parents. That's not hte most romantic thing in the world, but if anyone could deal with Taek's world I think she could.

When it comes to romance, all girl wants to be Number 1 in her BF's life. However when it comes to family, wife sometimes does not come number 1. sometimes his work has to come number 1 priority and when they have their kids, their kids become number 1 priority. I often hear that my GF knows that her husband loves his daughter more than anything else but she does not complain or get jealous it and take it as is because she herself adore her daughter, for instance. One cannot function her family life if she wishes and demands that she is the number one in her husband's life. DS clearly do things for her future husband and put her desire on back burner when it has to so that her husband will have a smooth life. It's not a sacrifice, it is love.

yeah i mean, she WOULD be used to that role but we all know that's not the role she wants. we saw this in (ep. 2?) when she had that melt down in front of her family, about not wanting to share a bday w/bora, about never getting a fried egg. it was a tragic & extremely beautiful and honest scene. it showcased what DS truly felt about her role as the 2nd or 3rd. yes, she's used to it and bless her soul, she has accepted it in some sense but is it fair that she stays 3rd or 2nd place forever? no, i don't think so. & i don't think DS thinks so as well.
this is why, as much as i LOVE taek, he's not the one for her. i'm sure after a lot of angst DS and JH will finally allow themselves to be endgame as well. <3

I agree totally and I don't that sort of life for her either, but it wouldn't be something she couldn't deal with. She could. She doesn't need attention or to be #1 in someone's life. She's gone her whole life without both so I think she'd be able to continue on as usual.
JH would treat her better in the long run. I really think life with TK would be sad and lonely for her.

hey, she did eat well in China - she did go for half that fish, after all. And five bowls of whatever they had for breakfast :).
Taek had me swooning through most of this episode, and if there's one thing episode 9 taught us, it's that we can't take our assumptions for granted. (I thought he was too much of a child to even register Deok-sun that way, then too much of an innocent to even go near worldly vices like cigarettes, and too shy to admit his feelings out loud.....and my assumptions were basically shattered one by one, by the end of ep 10). I don't think we can actually predict how good or bad he'd be in a relationship, but until then, I'll enjoy the ride.

Nice move, Taekie... Nice move. That confession probably his first genius baduk move applied in real life, he uttered it so clearly while looking at Jung Hwan's expression whom too busy to schooled his face so his broken heart not shown there.
I kinda interpreted it in two way, either he thrown down the challenge to Jung Hwan or its his way to force JungHwan to be brave and confessed his feelings. Because the silent type are usually more observant, and being a genius like him in baduk playing nonetheless, its a wonder if he didn't be the one who guess Jung Hwan's feeling before anybody else.
And whats with that preview for episode 11... How come they ended up in bed together? And still wearing the same set of clothes they wearing in that "Don't go to blind date" scene.
And I seriously hoped it was Sun Woo who ended up with BoRa, I'm really curious how the snarky prick girl like BoRa in 20's could turned into a husband meek aegyo filled Bo Ra in her 40's. That telephone conversation in Deok Seon's apartment really make me wonder if BoRa really make a 180 degree behaviour transformation? Because if she really could do that then Kim JooHyuk could be anyone in his 18s and the possibility not limited to JungHwan alone.
One week could not gone faster enough. Thank God I can still reign it with "Oh My Venus" and From Five to Nine"

Bora has always been a person operating at the two extremes though. Her 2015 personality and reaction isn't considered that odd especially if we take into account that she was smoking (when she wasnt supposed to. Probably made a promise or something) when her husband unexpectedly video-called. She probably was thinking "Oh shit! Trouble" and that aegyo/niceness was to cover her guilt (lol, anyone who knows her would know something's up).
I think I get Bora because I'm someone very similar to her, haha. Like, my sister always goes "Can you-" and I always snap "No!" but end up doing it anyways. Because my ego /reasoning cannot stand being taken advantage of or being expected to do stuff that are not my stuff (does that make sense? It just means that I have a super high ego, haha) so I don't want others to think it's okay to make me do stuff but I'm not against doing nice stuff for others out of my own free will. And I'm a really individualistic person like Bora too. If I know you can take the heat, I come first. Tough love and all.
