Rain offered new afterlife drama Goodbye My Beloved

I can’t say I’m all that excited about a Rain drama comeback after his last show (the oh-so-forgettable She’s So Lovable), but at least the drama itself sounds interesting, which means it could potentially wipe the slate and make us actually forget that She’s So Lovable ever happened. The new series is called Goodbye My Beloved, and it’s an adaptation of the Japanese novel Mr. Tsubakiyama’s Seven Days (Tsubakiyama Kacho no Nanokakan), which was also adapted into a movie of the same name in 2006.

The series is currently under consideration over at SBS, and comes from writer Noh Hye-young of the movies 200-Pound Beauty, How to Use a Guy With Secret Tips, and Singles, and PD Shin Yoon-sub of Rooftop Prince and Watch Out for Fools. The original is about a middle-aged department store manager who dies from overwork and stress, who asks the powers that be in the afterlife for a chance to complete some unfinished business. He gets to return to the land of the living for 7 days, during which he inhabits the body of a beautiful 30-year-old woman.

The warm human drama is about family ties, and of course life and death. It sounds pretty much like 49 Days crossed with Who Are You, where one last chance to observe your life from the outside gives you a whole new perspective. In the Korean drama adaptation, the main character will possess the body of another man instead of a woman, which cuts out the potential gender-bendy shenanigans.

Rain has been offered the leading role of the manager who inhabits another man’s body — or I guess technically he’ll play the body that gets possessed, though that’s not specified. It’s basically Oh My Ghostess with boys, isn’t it? The department store manager dies of overwork and comes back in the body of a pretty boy “elite” manager, and as a result his social status, outward appearance, and even personality will change.

In the original source material, there are two other characters that return for their own 7-day trip alongside the manager — a young boy who died in a traffic accident and a middle-aged yakuza boss who was murdered in a case of mistaken identity. The powers that be let them return in different bodies as long as they follow 3 strict rules: They can’t reveal their true identity, get revenge, or stay any longer than 7 days.

It makes me feel better knowing that there are rules in the novel, because I often watch these supernatural dramas feeling like they just make up rules as they go along and change them whenever it suits the next turn in the story. I like the concept a lot, despite the likelihood of tears shed — there’s a lot of heartfelt, laugh-out-loud comedy to be mined in these types of stories too, which I’m sure this PD-writer combo won’t be ignoring.

Goodbye My Beloved is being considered for a 2016 broadcast on SBS.

Same here! I'm not a huge Rain fan (I have a soft spot for him though) but he really looks like a cute teenager in that photo.

The title alone spells tears...so we're supposed to be prepared from the beginning for him to die all over again in the end? *haunted by the ending of 49 Days*

At least he is a good actor, god only knows why anyone would do that stuid idol drama when no one in the cast could act except for Rain and Cha Ye Ryun.

Ninja Assassin's script is so dreadful and the buckets of blood...lol. I think that sometimes Korean stars are so eager to make it in Hollywood that they aren't very discriminating with the scripts they are given.

So all the action will take place during 7 days? 16-20 ep for only 7 days? Boy those are going to be some LOOONG days.

3 Days (Micky Yoochun) was 16 episodes, so 7 days on 16/20 eps hopefully is not as bad.. ^^

You also have the American TV show 24 which was an hour an episode. It can definitely be done and done well. And if this person has 7 days left they will try to do as much as possible in those 7 days.

I am one of thousands who hope that Rain won't make a bad decision again like She's So Lovable. Halfway through that awful mess you could clearly see that he was miserable and not enjoying the experience of working with that horrible script and too-young Krystal. I think he disappeared into China to do some films to put some space between that bad experience and a potentially good comeback like this new drama might be. He is too brilliant an actor (see "A Love to Kill"!!) to waste in a bad role, so I've got my fingers crossed. I really love Rain for all that he is and all that he can be (including finding lasting love with Kim Tae Hee) and I don't want to see him falter again.

I'm sure he accepted that offer because he had scripts only for 3-4 eps... but anyways all actors have their ups and downs. it was his only one failed drama.

I agree, it's not fair to hold the SSL mess against Rain because he was the only person in that cast who could act. Krystal is a very good example of why idols should not be cast in lead roles without at least going through an audition - the girl is decent in smallish comic relief roles like Heirs (her line deliveries were gold), but a melo just makes her come off as insipid and washed-out next to more talented costars.

And from what I've heard, Rain's Chinese drama was a massive success, so at least he has that to bolster him! I hope he makes a better kdrama choice next time.

I wasn't holding the failure of SSL against Rain at all because he was, indeed, the only one in that drama with any true acting ability…but I like what @Pinkpony said about Rain probably only seeing the first 3-4 scripts. The other thing I noticed when watching that drama was how bad and awkward the directing was…unless the director was really struggling with a poor script and idol actors.

There are several idols out there who have proven themselves to be great actors. Choi Siwon is blowing me away in She Was Pretty. D.O.'s roles in It's OK that's Love and I Rememder You are stellar. T.O.P was great in IRIS and in the movie Tazza 2. Park Yuchun is wonderful in all his roles….so is Lee Seung-gi and so was BigBang's Seungri in Angel Eyes. I love seeing idols take on acting because if they can succeed, being actors will carry them farther in life years from now than singing will.

Seungri in Angel Eyes as example... really?

That wasn't a decision he made from what I heard. It was something he "had to do" for his management company or the network, one of those. I'm sure he would never have picked that voluntarily.

I hope he strikes gold this time. He has worked harder than most stars with his very poor background to become a megastar. I sincerely hope he will get a good project soon.

Sounds like Lee Joon/Yoo Haejin's upcoming movie .

Just because SSL was as terrible as the word could ever be defined, it doesn't change the fact that Rain's a really awesome actor. That drama sucks, and Rain doesn't - it's doesn't have to be both and definitely isn't both.

Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of that premise. I dropped 49 Days 5 episodes in and didn't even touch WAY, but I also really want him in a melodrama with a dash of comedy. He's great at both so if he takes this up, I'm hoping they court an actress who's half as talented as him. They don't even need the best ever, just someone who can match him. Unless there is no female lead...

49 Days all over again. Not sure how I feel about this since I kinda hate that drama's ending, but I like Rain as the actor. Might be just me but he was awesome in Shes So Lovable so I want to see him again in small screen.

Can we blame "She's So Loveable" on Rain? In many ways, he was just a victim of a terrible production. Maybe it was poor judgement to choose the project in the first place but it may have looked better when it was pitched to him.

Of course this happens after he met his beloved lovely but boring girl.. hahaha
I watched that drama only for Rain though.. still weeping for his wasted talent.

Anyway the story seems promising. I love 49 Days and Oh My Ghost so this would be good for me.. *pray*

You know before Oh My Ghostess aired I thought it would be funnier if the lusty female ghost was possessing chef instead, even though I did love it I still think I was right. Here I just wish they would stick to the source material and make him come back as female.

Right? It would be more interesting if he possessed a female. I guess they're aiming for warm rather than funny though gender-bender =/ funny. Sigh. Another missed opportunity. Instead it'll be an 'elite'. The two other characters sound interesting though.

That's actually how I found out about him! I'd watched Full House, but was unimpressed with it for some reason. (sorry Full House fans) So after Colbert had him on I looked him up and discovered his music (La La Song is my fav right now) and watched some his other stuff. I liked him in everything else but couldn't finish Loveable, so I hope this works out for him.

Please be good, drama. Please be good! I love Rain, not only because he is a damned good actor, but because...well, JUST LOOK AT HIM! (Yes, I'm that shallow girl in the corner.)

As for She's So Lovable, where to even start? Oh yeah, how about the script sucked, reeked---induced coma!? The characters were all as dull as dish water, especially that of the so-called "lovable girl". To be fair to poor Krystal Jung, how would it have even been possible to breathe life into such a poorly written character? It's hard enough to hone one's craft as a rookie actor, let alone to do so with such thin source material. I'm still willing to cut Krystal a bit more slack, and see what she can do with a better role. Rain's character sucked in the extreme also, which is why he was unable to display even a modicum of his awesome talent.

I read it somewhere that Kang Sora is the one that got possessed. The store manager is played by Kim Sooro and he is possessing Kang Sora body.
Rain is still going to have a loveline with Kang Sora, but I guess they going to take the story out of the novel literally.
